The action will be fast and furious when some of Australia’s best cowboys and cowgirls take to the arena at this year’s Warwick Rodeo. Photos: Kenyon Sports Photos.

Rodeo’s best saddle up for Warwick Australia’s most famous rodeo, the Warwick Rodeo will be celebrating its 86th year and reflecting back on the very first event held in 1906 at Queens Park in the centre of town. It quickly grew in popularity and in 1929, incorporated Australia’s own unique sport of campdraft competition. As the years rolled by, these two events combined to become Australia’s most prestigious campdraft with a Gold Cup first prize (valued at $5,000) plus prize money totalling $173,000 and rodeo, which has the slogan `Australia’s most famous’ offering total prize money of $93,000. Both events are held in high regard by both participants and spectators alike and competitors are considered elite athletes. From October 21 to 27, organisers are expecting 750 campdraft competitors and 560 rodeo competitors coming from as far a field as the Northern Territory, West Australia, Victoria, NSW and South Australia as well as from all over Queensland. Up to 25,000 spectators are expected and this year they will be treated to the best bucking stock in Australia and the best professional rodeo athletes on Friday night. There will be big screen live action and then live entertainment provided by Cathy Drummond on Friday evening and then on Saturday evening

country favourite, Mick Lindsay. This all happens after qualifying rounds of campdrafting throughout the week, with the start of rodeo events on Friday evening that run through until the Sunday afternoon finals, interspersed with final rounds of the five campdraft competitions. By the Sunday finals, a huge crowd is expected, filling every vantage point to see the thrills and spills from the bull and bronc riding action in the ring. The last 25 qualifiers for the Warwick Gold Cup are presented to the crowd with a lap of honour prior to the final. Each stockman selects a beast from a yard of 10 and works the horse a little in the yard, to show the judge their style then it’s a burst out into the arena and skilfully head that one beast around a figure eight course and into a gate all within 12 minutes. Bungendore wins at NSW Mounted Games Thirty three teams comprising 165 competitors from across NSW contested the annual Pony Club NSW State Mounted Games Championships at Holbrook last month. The competition, held over the weekend of September 14-15, was staged at the Holbrook Equestrian Centre. Teams of four riders plus a reserve battled it out in two age divisions, the under 17s and the under 25's. In the under 17s, Zone 16 team, Bungendore Radio Active, took at first place with 77 points. Zone 22 Team 1 came in second place with 76 points, while Zone 23 Forest Hillbillies placed third with 63 points. Along with Madeline Skopek from Dural and Annabelle Ledger from Yass, the riders left on the Monday after the state competition to travel with their horses and families to Western Australia for the event which was held at the end of last month. The riders aimed to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity driving across the Nullarbor, taking time to see some of the country and hopefully have some campfires and cook dampers along the way.

The next state event is the Pony Club NSW State ODE Championship at Harden from October 12-13. The Pony Club NSW State Mounted Games Championships were supported by Sport and Recreation - Communities NSW, Mitavite official feed partner, Global Entries Online major sponsor, as well as other local sponsors. EQUITANA to close with family day of fun EQUITANA Sydney is planning to go out in style with a fantastic day of equine entertainment and competition that the whole family can enjoy. Sunday, November 10 kicks off with The Man From Snowy River Legend's Challenge, where winners and placegetters from previous Corryong festivals, line up to find out who is the `best of the best’ in traditional Australian horsemanship. The city meets bush challenge provides a contest of skills that would have been required for survival by the Stockmen of yesteryear including: A daunting cross country course Cattle handling skills in the team penning component Showing the skilful use of a stockwhip; hitting targets as they gallop over obstacles Completing the Bareback Obstacle Course Sticking it out through the buckjump, where riders attempt to retain their seat on a bucking horse for eight seconds, while cracking their whips at least once. Another key attraction on Sunday will be the amazing EQUITANA Mitavite Waler Showcase. The Waler project, designed to bring the plight of the wild Waler horse to the attention of the public, has housed six wild Walers, captured in Central

Australia, with trainers of very different disciplines for the last 12 months. The showcase will tell the story of these iconic Australian horses through history, in a live and audio visual presentation that provides demonstrations of skill at arms by the Light Horse Brigade, enactment of the poem, Remember the Horses and live presentation of a song especially written for the program. The trainers will also demonstrate just how far they have come with their plucky and adaptable Walers in just one year. In addition to these two wonderful events, EQUITANA Sydney will also present Australian favourites, the Double Dans, fresh from their win at the US Road to the Horse competition, who will astound the crowds with their equine entertainment training skills. The Australian Quarter Horse Association will display of some of the most beautiful Quarter Horses the country has to offer during their lead classes and, you definitely don't want to miss the high speed action and rocking music of the The Man from Snowy River Challenge at EQUITANA Australian Open Barrel Racing Photo: Wild Fillies will test horse and rider alike. Championship, which combines pretty cowgirls with incredibly skilled horses racing against the clock! Tickets are on sale now, so visit the EQUITANA website www.equitana.com.au for a full program and ticket information.

The Horse Report

Being present during foaling can save lives By GEORGIA KIRBY “We lost our foal last night.” “If we had been there we could have saved it.” These are the words I get greeted with from devastated horse breeders, time and time again over the breeding season. All the planning, nearly a year of waiting and the financial and emotional investment, destroyed within minutes and in many cases it's preventable - just for the sake of being there when your mare foals. I hear many people say, “horses have been foaling by themselves for thousands of years, you should leave them alone to foal”. This is a very naive way of thinking. Yes, wild horses foal alone, very successfully and natural selection culls out those that don't. Once the horse was domesticated, we took that natural selection from them, we placed them in artificial surroundings, we feed artificial feeds, we then cross breed them. All of this leads to increased risk of foaling complications and it is now our responsibility, to monitor and ensure the well being of our mares and foals. Being a responsible horse breeder means you need to be present when your mare foals, so you are able to get or give assistance when things go wrong.

Situations like, the sack did not break and the foal suffocated or the foal’s shoulders were stuck and the foal was lost and nearly lost the mare as well or the foal was mal presented and both the mare and foal were lost. These are just a few of the complications that occur and in many cases the losses can be prevented. There are products on the market such as foaling alarms and foaling predictor kits,

which can help alert you to when your mare will foal. Don't leave it to fate, protect your mare and foal, when they need you most. If no complications arise you get to enjoy your foal’s start in life, which to any horse breeder is a very special and exciting event. For more information on foaling products that can help you, please contact Foalguard, www.foalguard.com or phone 03-5342-2206.

Time to retire and take time out to travel My husband Russell and I have had a turbulent year after receiving very bad news regarding Russell's health during the first week of February. As many of you know, I have attended several shows during the year, obviously without him accompanying me, and we have still been able to keep the business functioning as normal as possible, with the added burden of many visits to the doctors and hospital receiving treatment. Three years ago we made a promise to our family that we would take a trip with them in 2013 to enjoy a White Christmas in Canada with our son in law's family, and since our devastating news this year, have extended the trip to several other countries where we have always wanted to travel. We will be away all of December until late January and during that time, our website

will close permanently. Orders received during the time leading up to the closure of the website, will be processed as normal when we return home to Australia. Our plans for the future are to travel with our van and see all of those places that we had talked about visiting when we retired and enjoying our time together. We will no longer be attending any events but I will be still offering the Ad Design Service as this can be done anywhere that we might be and when back home in Cleveland. Russell will have his custom framing work to keep him busy. Thank you to everyone again for your wonderful support during the past 12 years and hope that you continue to enjoy your beautiful horses for many years to come. How to teach your horse to tie up and not pull back By MIRANDA BEASLEY Global Equine Marketing

pic 1). This one is off a Stock Saddle but Western Cinches are great also

In this article, I would like to share some tips for a safe and secure way to teach your horse or pony to tie up calmly and never pull back and break leads or halters. Please understand this is not choking a horse, it does not tighten or constrict around the horse’s neck - it is purely a system to teach them to release to pressure over the poll/neck and learn patience. Our weanlings are tied this way within the first weeks of their weaning and will spend a couple of hours every afternoon like this while we are working, doing stables and feeding. This is also how they learn to stand while we bag them (through a towel around their legs etc), clip them for the first time and trim their feet. Again, I reiterate that Pic 1 they will have a little fight, they will get cranky but they are only fighting themselves and soon learn to think it through and be patient. We have been tying up horses like this for years. First, you will need a Soft String Girth (see

After tying the lead to a secure solid fence post, feed the lead through the halter under the chin - do Pic 2 not attach to the halter. This step is purely to hold the lead up away from the horse’s legs if they do thrash around. Please try and use a very strong clip on the lead (pic 2) - no cheap fine clip, something quite solid and strong. For a young horse who is being tied for the first few times, I would have the lead shorter then in this photo (pic 3). You do not want the horse Pic 3 to have the length on the lead to be able to get right back on its haunches.

This photo (pic 4) shows the horse lifting his head away from the post but pressure remaining on the neck strap not the halter. The halter is purely to stop the lead and neck strap sliding down the neck.

Pic 4

In pic 5, the photo again shows horse taking up the pressure on the neck. Finally - walk away. Head off and do your normal chores, or grab a chair, find some shade some distance away but where you can see the Pic 5 horse and leave them be. Yes, they will pull back and probably have a little fight and yes they will get frustrated and annoyed. Do not go near them, leave them be to their own devices. They must learn to think through the process, learn to release to the pressure and stop fighting. Time and Patience is the only way this will happen. Sometimes this may take a few hours, leave them. Do not feel that they have learnt this after 15 minutes.

The Horse Report

Helping horses cope with Queensland Itch By GREG & KATHY LYONS Wilga Park Morgans Since the floods in 2010-2011, things have not been the same on the Great Dividing Range in Queensland. Queensland Itch was always something that belonged `down the range’ and we could be quite comfortable in the thought that our horses would not suffer from this debilitating disease. We were also quite comfortable in the thought that if we purchased a Morgan horse with the `dreaded Itch’, within a couple of months there would be no sign of it - one wash was all that we ever needed. For the last two years we have had a couple of our Morgan horses suffering from the Itch with no relief during winter. It was so bad that it was impossible to float them, as they just

had to scratch on anything they touched. A float ride was very dangerous, as the horse would almost turn itself inside out trying to scratch its body against the back and sides of the float. We rugged from nose to tail, we bathed, we put many different oils and potions on our horses who suffered with the Itch and all would have an effect for a short time but as soon as the regime was interrupted, the horses would be tormented with the urge to rub themselves until their skin was raw and bleeding. Then we discovered Stem Equine. Robin Stanfield mentioned the product to Greg and, as we were at our wits end with trying to help our horses, so we decided to give it a go. The results have been beyond description. Our horses, within a month, have grown hair where

there was nothing but rough, rubbed skin. We have had wet weather and hot weather (two things that always made the condition flare up at its worst) and still the horses have improved. Even with a hic-cup in delivery

of the product (not through any fault of Stemtech) and the horses being without the product for more than two weeks, they have continued to grow hair and, though they have rubbed a little, they have not rubbed out any hair.

StemEquine the all-natural Adult Stem Cell enhancer for all horses 100% Natural Proprietary Concentrate Aphanizomenon Flos-aquae (AFA) assists in naturally releasing more Adult Stem Cells into circulation. AFA has been safely consumed for over 3 decades. No sugar, artificial colours, artificial flavours, dairy, yeast or preservatives.

Why would your horse need StemEquine? For a number of reasons such as heavy exercise and growing older, your horse’s tissues and organs require ongoing natural renewal. By supporting the natural release of Adult Stem Cells from the bone marrow, StemEquine helps provide the raw materials necessary for this renewal to take place.

The result: a uniquely effective health and performance strategy for your horses. Horses have rubbed the skin bare coping with Queensland Itch.

Stem Equine has allowed the restoration of hair and reduced Itch.

Using StemEquine can assist healing By LEANNE MCCLYMONT Bathurst, NSW (Testimonial on the healing of her horse Jackson) On the 11th of May this year, I returned home to find my Thoroughbred gelding had a large and gaping wound on his left side, a result of him having collided with a fence post. Naturally the vet was called and the Jackson, a 14-year-old Thoroughbred. appropriate suturing and antibiotics attended to. The wound measured approx 30cm long, 4.5 cm wide and 3cm deep. With antibiotics and analgesia on board, he felt well enough to roll but in doing so ruptured the majority of his sutures. This time there was not enough tissue left to resuture, however a soft drain was inserted to assist with the considerable build up of exudate. Treatment basically involved keeping the wound as clean and well protected as possible. In spite of my best efforts the wound, by day five, had become a river of pus. I discussed the situation with Rob Henigan at my feed supply store and he had suggested the use of StemEquine, a product he had mentioned previously when my pony mare foundered. At this point I was ready to try anything. I commenced with the recommended dose of one scoop/day on day eight post injury. By day 11, I could see a significant difference in the wound. There was much less exudate and there was clear regranulation of healthy tissue around the margin of the wound. I continued to keep the wound as clean as possible and debride the necrosed tissue. Having never had a horse with such an ugly injury I expected the injury to take months to heal. I have been amazed at how rapidly the wound has healed, with no evidence of scaring and full coat regrowth. Rob offered to keep a pictorial record of just how well things were progressing so you can see how rapidly healing progressed. Today, there is a tiny remnant of scab and a small amount of residual swelling. Jackson is back to full steam ahead with a beautiful coat and energy to burn. I also tried StemEquine with my pony mare when she showed signs of foundering again. The first bout lasted for weeks and she was in dreadful pain. This time with the help of StemEquine and cutting out the greens, she was walking without distress within three ) days.) I would most certainly recommend StemEquine to horse owners who have had similar illness or injury with their horses, and would use it as frontline treatment in the event of any future episodes.

21.5.13 – 8 days after injury

23.5.13 – 2 days after StemEquine treatment commenced

25.5.13 – 4 days into treatment – wound starting to become smaller and the soft tissue is forming.

6.6.13 – 17 days into treatment

23.6.13 – 34 days into treatment

30.6.13 – day 41 after treatment commenced

By MERYN COOPER Zebramez Media I’m not sure what it is, but every time the Fig Tree Pocket committee schedule an ODE, it rains. The club’s survived muddy paddocks, torrential rain, even floods, whatever it is Fig Tree Pocket ODE sure knows how to attract the rain. It’s been dry for weeks, my plants were wilting, the dog bowl kept evaporating and the lawn was brown. Yet sure as clockwork in the early hours before the September ODE, the sky opened up and down came the rain. Only this time it was welcome, the thunderstorm helping to settle the dust on the arena and soften the ground for the cross country. More than 140 competitors enjoyed the changes made to the Fig Tree Pocket ODE grounds at the ODE this weekend. The Fig Tree Pocket committee and members have been working hard behind the scenes to improve the course for dressage, showjumping and cross country. After teething problems with the arena it has been completely re-worked and rode well. The club was determined to have a riderpleasing sand arena and organised to have the whole space regraded after feedback

Fig Tree Pocket in Brisbane will host another cross country event later this month on October 26 and 27.

from riders. This time the comments were positive. A new jump was added to the cross-country warm up area which will be added to the course for the next event. And there were two new brush jumps and a fantastic new large log fence. The other significant change was the finish flags were moved so those completing the course were no longer flying into the warm up and start box area. In the FEI Classes, Indira Werny on

The enthusiastic committee have less than a month till they do it all again. The cross country course is now closed prior to the next event on October 26 and 27. Entries open on Nominate at 8pm tonight. The members and committee of Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club would like to thank Horseland Jindalee for their continued support; BDO Brisbane for their continued support with printing; technical delegate Des Hughes; course designer David Duffy; scorers Miriam Newitt and Kevin Foster; show jump course builders Graeme Watts & Ruth Jeffery and dressage judges Irene Bakels-Noreen; Carole Tozer; Trish Braithwaite; Tania Macdonald; Madeline van Hattem; Lyn McGann; Clare Matthews and Jan Dahl, plus sector controllers Paula Barlow; Steve Wolstenholme and Jeff Palmer.

The Horse Report

Feeding tips to remember in Spring By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist The days are becoming longer and temperatures are beginning to increase as the Spring weather arrives, the pasture will begin to grow, horses tend to shed their coat and time is generally spent more in the saddle than in the winter months. It is important to monitor the condition of your horse at all times not just in Spring, many horses may have lost some weight over the Winter months some individuals actually increase weight over Winter and perhaps maybe a little too fat. It is very important to look at the horse’s diet according to his genetic predisposition. This will include the breed of the horse, the weight of the horse, height, location, work load, type of pasture and a number of other factors that will affect the horse’s diet. It is also important to remember that during the Spring months pasture tends to be very nutritious so horses that do gain weight quickly will need to be monitored more closely. Roughage Roughage is the most important part of your horse’s feed regime, it is very common during the winter months to feed extra roughage in the form of hays to maintain body condition. However, when pastures improve in the Spring, it may be necessary to adjust the amount of roughage being fed. Horses lose their coat going into Spring this happens due to the longer days and warmer weather, it is important to ensure that you groom your horses to remove the shedding coat this can also increase the process. Horses feel uncomfortable during this time and assisting in removing the coat is of great advantage to their health and to ensure a healthy coat coming through. Nutrition, as usual plays a huge role in

Page 24

assisting this shedding process, if there is a short supply of specific nutrients such as protein and amino acids this deficiency will have an effect on slowing the shedding of your horse’s coat. It is well known and documented that oils such as omega three and omega six fatty acids can help improve our horse’s coat. My preference is always soy oil as it is very high in these essential fatty acids. A good supplement that provides your horse with sufficient amino acids, some essential fatty acids and vitamins will be of enormous benefit. There is no doubt that like human hair, a horse’s coat is affected by nutrition. I think it is very important to keep a watchful eye on the horse’s body condition to make sure that he is not consuming too much green grass. Early Spring grass contains a higher level of sugars, starch and calories; this is the reason why sometimes your horse may appear to be feeling very well. Other problems that can occur with Spring grass can be diarrhoea and other digestive upsets. Many horses will benefit from a proand pre-biotic. Older horses and horses prone to laminitis could be affected by these high levels of sugars and starch. Hard feed It will be necessary to adjust the amount of feed you are providing your horse at this time of the year, this is certainly not the case for all horses but most horses will always do far better on spring pasture than a Winter pasture. Make sure you adjust the amount according to the horse’s work level. As the pasture improves it may be necessary to decrease the amount of hard feed being provided but it is necessary to ensure that the horse is receiving a sufficient amounts of carbohydrates in

the diet to support the work required. Water It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is your horse always requires fresh water, as the temperature increases and horses are working more frequently a horse will tend to sweat more in the warmer months. So it is very important to ensure that the horse remains hydrated at all times. During the warmer months horses also tend to lose electrolytes which include potassium, sodium and chloride it may be necessary to supplement with a good natural electrolyte product. Make sure that your horse does not have too much grass suddenly, due to the richness of the grass and the high nutritional level. It is recommended to graze horses prone to laminitis for short periods of time. Some tips to maintain healthy pasture include avoiding allowing your horses out on pasture that has been quite wet until it dries out sufficiently. Drainage is of enormous benefit to managing properties, it makes a huge difference to be able to take the water away from your paddocks with good quality drainage. Make sure you rotate your paddocks, move your horses around as often as you can this will ensure healthy paddocks on a long-term basis. Keeping paddocks harrowed, or picking up manure on a regular basis will also help. Spreading some grass seed, particularly native grass seed which is hardier will also ensure a good level of pasture growth when needed the most. If you have small acreage there is no reason why you cannot provide enough paddocks to ensure rotation, your horses will graze more evenly throughout these paddocks. Even a small acreage such as two to five acres is quite sustainable in this manner. continued page 25

Diets for individual requirements From page 24

General tips to remember Always remember with performance horses that they do require a good balanced diet to ensure health and well-being on a long-term basis. This diet should always include a high level of roughage in the form of hays and or grazing, remember spring grass can create some problems with horses due to the high nutritional level. A feed ration containing some grains such as barley or oats or using a compressed pellet that incorporates alfalfa, cereal hay and other types of hays. Compressed pellets are also highly nutritious, healthy and dust free. Remember to supply sufficient fresh water and a good natural daily formula plus electrolytes if needed. Dietary advice Specific diet plans can be provided by contacting Antionette on (03) 9775 6422 or email antoinette@hiform.com.au This may include management of laminitis, digestive upsets and designing a diet that is specific to your horses needs. The service she offers is a free service and is more than happy to assist you with your horse’s health and well-being. You will receive a detailed assessment of your horse by a qualified equine nutritionist. Advice on horse nutrition in general, herbs in horses, managing nervous horses, increasing weight gain in horses. Advice and management of arthritis in horses, the correct use of vitamin and mineral formulas and general advice on what type of horse feed will suit your horse. Horses are individuals just like us, their DNA is unique to each animal, therefore it is only logical to presume that each horse requires an individual approach to ensure correct nutrition. Hi Form does not use software programs but designs diets for each individual requires. • Taking into consideration the biochemical uniqueness of your horse. • Providing a total nutritional support system for your horse. • A trouble-free and economical feeding regime. • Using treatments recommended and approved by vets, naturopaths and nutritionists. • FREE ongoing support for the life of your horse.

Mates get behind Australian fundraiser Two Brisbane-based small business owners, Des Warnock and Garry Fraser are a couple of mates who created a very successful business from their small warehouse in Geebung. They created and distributed Tuffy’s Tubs, an Aussie made, Aussie owned product that has stood the test of time. And now they want to share their success with those in need through a project named “Australia’s Biggest Fundraiser”. Having secured a very large market in Australia, the boys decided to give something back and to help those who need it most, and Australia’s Biggest Fundraiser was born. With different sizes and vibrant colours, Tuffy’s Tubs is promising to donate $1 from every tub sold to reach their target of $1,000,000 donated to fundraisers within one year. A website was created www.buyfundraisingtub.com.au and all tubs were simplistically reduced to $10, offering a saving of up to $20 per item. And to sweeten the deal, Garry and Des decided to support fundraising organisations even further by subsidizing the delivery fees across Australia. And to ensure equitable fundraising dollars were distributed, they decided to let the customer choose their favorite, legitimate group to support by allowing them to choose the recipient of their $1 donation. They also wanted this campaign to be fully open and accountable by displaying all recipient groups and current dollars donated in totals on the website in the form of a leader board. The boys believe there will be the equivalent of 13 full time jobs created for the duration of the campaign. The “Australia’s Biggest Fundraiser” campaign has just been launched right across Australia and you can get involved. What’s it all about?

Des Warnock and Garry Fraser are a couple of mates who created a very successful business from their small warehouse in Geebung. It’s about giving away $1 million in one year to any school, sporting club, child care centre, hospital foundation, surf lifesaving club, SES, RFS, Rotary, Apex, Lions, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Cancer Council, Leukemia Foundation or community group across Australia. Use the tubs for your group or sell the tubs to your community at a profit and watch the dollars add up. With a five year guarantee, these tubs are built to last and made in Queensland. What do you have to do? It’s simple. Buy one Tuffy’s Tub for $10 (saving of up to $20 per item) and $1 will be donated to your community. Sell that Tuffy’s Tub to your community for a profit of $5. Then multiply that by a few hundred Tuffy’s Tubs and watch the fundraising dollars add up. And one of the

best bits is that you could buy hundreds of Tuffy’s Tubs and Tuffy’s will subsidize your delivery fee to anywhere in Australia from as little as $10 Brisbane to Sydney. It’s like the chocolate drive only more colourful and way more useful! What’s the catch? Nothing. With the weight of the discounted cost being carried by Tuffy’s Tubs plus the $1 donation on top of that outlay, only the fundraisers will benefit. No hidden agendas, no get rich quick schemes, just the willingness to give something back. If you would like to join the Australia’s Biggest Fundraiser campaign, raise money for your community and grab a bargain while you’re at it! Go to www.buyfundraisingtubs.com.au and get on board today.

Plenty to consider when stitching a wound By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic To stitch of not to stitch - the answer to that question is so easy, yes, all wounds will do better and heal much more quickly if they are sutured. The reality is often different as there can be many reasons why a decision is made not to stitch a wound. By far the overwhelmingly majority of reasons for electing not to properly attend to a wound are cost. Be particularly aware that it is not the cost of the actual stitch up that is prohibitive but the after care is where the real expense occurs. There is absolutely no point at all in going to the trouble of suturing a wound if the management is not prepared to do whatever is necessary to maximally enhance the healing capabilities of the wound. There are very few wounds that will not require strict stall confinement for usually three to six weeks before there is sufficient healing to allow any relaxation. Very few owners are prepared to do this, and yet, it is easily the most critical factor in a rapid resolution. There are many reasons, often not having a stall available being one, but more often it is a combination of not being prepared to put in the extra work in maintaining a horse in a stall 24 hours a day, and a perception that it is cruel to the horse to be locked up. This is certainly not true; however, many horses appear to be very upset when sud-

Page 28

denly confined in their own environment, particularly if other horses are being let out. In many circumstances, the sensible and most cost effective decision is to consider agisting the horse during the healing process. The horse is always more relaxed and settles quickly into a routine at a new environment. Even more cost effective is to consider hospitalising the horse at a veterinary clinic. Now, professional supervision by people experienced with assessing progress and dealing with wounds is available and the end result is more likely to be advantageous. Whatever the owner decides, it is always going to be expensive. People rarely realise the ongoing costs of nursing a laceration and every bandage change and medication gradually accumulates into a sizeable figure. It makes sense to elect to obtain the best possible treatment and in the end, get the best value for money spent. At Redlands, we believe it is in everyone’s best interest to hospitalise the horse and so we offer very reasonable inclusive packages for horses to agist in such circumstances.

The reality is that once the wound is properly sutured and bandaged, there is usually not a lot that needs to be done each day other than maintaining strict confinement and monitoring the horse. Healing time is much quicker, and the end result better. The biggest expense of a horse sustaining an injury such as this is the down time waiting for healing during which the horse cannot be ridden or used. Most significant wounds will take six to 12 weeks to heal if properly sutured and managed. Those that are left to heal as open wounds, or sutured and not properly maintained, can be expected to keep the horse out of action for six to 12 months so the primary benefit of quick and proper attention is a more rapid return to work Almost all wounds can be stitched, irrespective of how bad they may look. Some that are severely traumatised or with a lot of skin missing, may be difficult. Those on the front of joints where there is a lot of movements can be challenging but each must be assessed and decisions made. Certainly injuries that involve tendons or ligaments, where bone is exposed, or around the coronet or joints must be attended to if satisfactory outcomes are to be anticipated. The so called ‘Golden Period’ for suturing wounds is within the first six to 12 hours after occurrence. The tissues are fresh and contamination is usually at a minimum giving a much better chance of success. Continued page 19

Management of wounds is crucial for better recovery From page 18

Some wounds may even do better if left for a few days to allow the body to clean up some of the damaged tissue and to create healthier tissues for healing. The most critical factor in success at suturing is the technique and how the wound is stitched. In lacerations and wounds the principles of `Preserving adequate blood supply’, `Eliminating Dead Space’, and `Minimising Tension’, are most important. Experience is obviously a major benefit in getting the best result, however, once the wound is sutured, after care is almost always the most important factor in obtaining satisfactory healing. Here, the most essential element for success is eliminating movement of the sutured area. This is the major reason for stall confinement, but many wounds require bandaging, splints, and casts. Everyone always wants to blame infection for wounds breaking down. This is rarely the case.

Proper debridement and flushing of the wound gets rid of the bacteria and dead tissue and if the wound is properly dealt with, movement is almost always the prime culprit causing failure. This is where most attention in aftercare should be directed. Be well assured that no amount of penicillin, which everyone seems to demand, will compensate for any degree of movement of the sutured area. Almost always, the most serious wounds are those on the lower limbs. There is very little muscle and support tissue here, and consequently usually a poorer blood supply, and this is the area where most movement is going to occur. These wounds very often involve critical musculoskeletal structures and damage can be devastating to the career of the horse. I believe proper attention to almost all of these structures can be successfully dealt with, but proper professional attention is essential.

British supplement helps Kiwis at Burghley ew Zealand riders swept the board at the Land Rover Burghley International Horse Trials in the UK scooping, not only the coveted Burghley title, but also a remarkable six out of the top eight placings. Lying behind one of the key factors credited for giving the Kiwis their winning edge is British science and innovation incorporated into STORM® a revolutionary feed supplement that the New Zealand riders choose to feed their horses. STORM, from Racing Blue, is a scientifically proven feed supplement that enhances the ability of muscle to fight fatigue by increasing its capacity to buffer the lactic acid that builds up during strenuous exercise, thus giving the horse more sustained power and endurance. It provides the nutritional building blocks to help horses delay muscle fatigue which will slow horses down, or can increase the chance of critical mistakes during competition. High Performance Coach for Equestrian Sport NZ, Erik Duvander, was thrilled with the

performances of all the Kiwi horse and rider combinations. “We are always looking for an edge and try to better anything the other nations' teams are doing,” he said. While he believes that Thoroughbred horse power and rider bravery are predominant factors, he acknowledged that feeding STORM contributed to

the NZ combinations recording six of the fastest eight times in the cross country phase at Burghley. “Our horses were going faster than the others and they all recovered well for the final day,” he said. Six of the top eight places at Burghley went to New Zealand combinations including the win-

ner Jonathan Paget, who secured his second four-star win of the season riding the New Zealand Thoroughbred, Clifton Promise on which he also won Badminton Horse Trials in May. This made him the sixth New Zealander to win Burghley but only the second horse and rider combination ever to win Badminton and Burghley in the same season. Fellow Kiwi Andrew Nicholson took second and third prizes with Avebury and Nereo which assured him of scooping the $150,000 prize pot for the HSBC FEI Classics and extended his lead in the HSBC Rankings while Paget, who also won this year's British Eventing Open Championship title at Gatcombe, lies third in the FEI Classics' final leader board. Paget and Nicholson, along with the rest of the New Zealand team feed STORM and their impressive run of success is testament to the benefits it offered. Major breakthrough. I recommend it.
