EA releases new helmet approved standards update The helmet approved standards list has been updated in the Equestrian Australia (EA) General Regulations as from October 19 this year. Current American standard SNELL E2001 and British standard PAS 015 have been added to the list of approved safety standards to offer a wider range of choice for members. The new Australian ARB HS 2012 standard has been added to the ongoing and current AS/NZS 3838 Australian standard. This standard has been published by Racing Australia in 2012. EA’s responsibilities include maximising safety in equestrian sport. That is why from now on, except where sport rules allow otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time, even recreationally. This will be part of the EA General Regulations, Article 122.2: Dress and Salute. Chair of EA, Judy Fasher, said Equestrian Australia was pleased to have aligned its rules with international standards for riding helmets. “The new rules offer variety, combined with the most advanced technology available in the production and design of riding helmets,” she said. Following the withdrawal of the safety standard EN1384 in Europe during 2014-2015, EA had followed the movement in February 2016 by informing members that the EN1384 standard would not be permitted as of January 1, 2017 and that in addition, the new VG1 was a new approved standard on the list. The year notice gave riders time to purchase new helmets if necessary. Protective headgear must con-

New Australian standard ARB HS 2012 provided they are SAI Global marked. Current American standards ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) provided they are SEI marked, or SNELL E2001. Current British standard PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) provided they are BSI Kitemarked. Interim European Standard VG1 (01.040: 2014-12) with or without BSI Kitemark. BSI Kitemarked: SAI Global marked: SEI marked: Outgoing European Standard EN/1384 during 2016 only – not permitted from 2017. The accepted safety standards can be found at all times on the EA website and in the General Regulations. Helmet Manufacturers generally recommend replacing helmet every five years or so. If you have a hard-blow impact accident while wearing your helmet, immediately replace it for a new model. There may be damage to the helmet that is not visible to the naked eye.

Nettle

is perhaps best known as a highly nutritious feed herb/fodder for animals, and has been used through the ages for this purpose, occasionally even cultivated en masse and mown to provide ‘hay’ for milk cows. It is considered a spring tonic and detoxifier for human and animal alike. It is rich in chlorophyll, and is an excellent source of calcium, chromium, magnesium, zinc, cobalt, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, protein, riboflavin, selenium, silicon, thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. No wonder then that nettle is such an appetiser, and conditioning restorative tonic for horses. It is reputed to enhance coat shine and dappling.

Clivers

has antiseptic qualities and is a general detoxifier. High in Silica, it assists in the management and treatment of skin disorders. It is a herb used for treating the urinary system, but as many herbs can be used to treat urinary tract infections, professional herbal advice is recommended to get the most appropriate herb for the specific problem area. Also used to ease swollen legs and joints, support the lymphatic and endocrine systems and encourage the elimination of toxins, Clivers is also helpful if your horse experiences muscle tightening during or after exercise.

www.hiform.com.au

The question 'what is the right amount of hay for my horse and how should I feed it?' is often asked. Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse's digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. We suggest feeding a feed that is not wet or soaked because this does not encourage the normal process at the point of the mouth and the mouth is the first contact your horse makes with his feed. If you are using supplements you will be required to dampen the feed, but this means damp bordering on dry, not wet or soaked. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. I always say that whoever created the horse's digestive system must have been on drugs. But seriously take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a Safeway or Coles shopping bag, not very big. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45 L.

The Horse Report

Hay plays a key role in diet From page 8

Many parts of Australia have experienced very low rainfall, and subsequently, very poor pasture growth. As the weather gets cooler, we are getting a lot of questions from horse owners with little or no pasture, on how best to replace the grass component of their horse’s diet. The choice of possible hay types, given the current season, may be more down to availability than any other factors, but where available, good quality pasture/meadow/grass hay is normally a good starting point. No matter what sort of hay you can get (and provided your horse or pony doesn't have any additional issues affecting hay type/consumption), the guidelines around amounts generally follow the same rules. How much hay to a bale? Small square bales: Small squares are very popular as they are easy to handle and store and don't have much wastage, and are very easy to control and monitor how much your horse is eating. There is quite a large range in weights to small squares, most commonly between 17-26kg. The bales are divided into biscuits/slabs/flakes which vary per bale, normally between 10-14 dependant on size and density. The biscuit/slab/flake weights can also vary from around 0.9kg to 3.2kg. Round bales/Large square bales: These can be more economical but can be harder to handle and move around, and can require more specialised equipment. If supplying as free access/ad lib, there can be more wastage (hay also seems to make a lovely bed or toilet for some horses). Quick conversions: 4 foot round bales are normally the equivalent of 10-12 small squares 5 foot round bales are normally the equivalent of 15-18 small squares 8x4x3 foot large square bales are normally the equivalent of 20-24 small squares What is the easiest way to weigh my hay? There are a couple of simple ways to make sure you know how much you are feeding. 1. Weigh bale, divide by biscuit/slab/flake number

Horses will normally consume about 0.5kg of hay per hour and on average spend about 17 hours per day eating.

ie - bale weight = 22kg, and there are 11 biscuits/bale - 22/11 = 2kg per biscuit 2. Weigh haynet/bag - according to eBay, there are cheap sets of hanging scales (around $3 delivered) How and when should I feed the hay? Horses are designed to constantly eat (most spend 17 hours per day eating), so having hay available all the time is the best option to mimic this if your horse has no pasture. Horses’ stomachs are continuously secreting stomach acid, and excess acid can accumulate if the horse has an empty stomach for more than about three hours. This accumulation of stomach acid can result in various issues such as ulcers, diarrhoea, behavioural problems or even colic. To help alleviate these issues, or just to increase their fibre content, horses will often continue chewing to produce saliva (on fences, trees and in some cases their own manure), which acts as a natural antacid. In an ad lib scenario, horses normally consume around 0.5kg hay per hour, and will usually spend a larger proportion of their daylight hours eating than at night. Most horses are able to self- regulate their intake, but you may find if the horse is not used to the ad lib access, they may eat very quickly in the beginning.

Normally they will calm and eat only what they need to maintain a healthy weight. The best way to 'feed out' ad lib is to monitor your horse's consumption, so they just have a small amount of hay left over when you go to top up. Hay can be fed on the ground, in feeders, or in nets/bags/pillows/hay savers etc. Providing a mat for your hay to be fed on is a good idea if you live in a sandy area, or there is not much ground cover and your horse is at risk of picking up sand/dirt etc if fed directly off the ground. The increase in use of 'slow feeder' nets and bags over the last few years has been enormous. The small to medium hole nets (1 to 1.75 inch openings) have been shown to reduce consumption time by 33% compared to hay fed in large hole (6 inch openings) or off the ground, and can stop hay from falling out and blowing away. These have been very valuable tools for horses whose weight needs to be monitored closely, or horses that have a tendency to get too heavy. Please ensure if you are using a slow feeder your horse is still consuming an adequate amount of hay per day (even if it is taking them a long time to eat it). Please contact Hi Form on (03) 9775 6422 if you have any questions regarding your horse's diet.

Hendra Virus rapid detection testing research needs help Hendra virus is a serious and potentially fatal virus that infects horses and can be transmitted to humans. The virus is harboured by flying foxes (fruit bats) and there have been multiple outbreaks of the disease every year since 2006. First discovered in 1994 at a racing stable in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra, it has caused the death of more than 70 horses across Queensland and New South Wales. It also claimed the lives of four out of the seven humans infected between 1994 and 2014. Dr Joanne Macdonald and her research team at the University of the Sunshine Coast, including Joanna Kristoffersen, have theoretically developed a rapid assay that can detect Hendra-infected horse samples that is fast, sensitive, and is amendable to field adaptation.

Page 10

This rapid detection technology is as sensitive as the current test, but operates in less than 10 minutes. It could be used to replace the existing lab assay to speed up the centralised testing. Importantly, the USC test would not place any additional burden or risk on the veterinarian beyond those already required to be taken in collecting samples to send to a central laboratory. Horse owners can actively support this historical innovation in disease research. There are several steps required before this research can be readily available to veterinarians to use in the field. This is where Dr Macdonald’s research team needs horse owners’ help. “We would like to see this rapid assay in field trials next year and widely distributed throughout Australia by 2020,” she said.

“It takes funding from all sources – especially from philanthropic individuals who recognise the value of this innovation. “With this in mind, a special fund has been established for those who would like to contribute towards the lifechanging research. “By making a donation to support rapid diagnostic technology you will assist in how Hendra Virus is detected and thus will contribute to the next step in eradication of this deadly disease.” Donate now: Make a donation via USC's secure online payment gateway. 100% of your donation will go towards Rapid Diagnostic Technology research, and any donations over $2 are tax deductible. For more information on donating to this project contact Kate Evans, Senior Development Manager, USC Development Office. Email: kevans@usc.edu.au

Dental gags allow for safe and proper examination By SAMANTHA GUNTER This is an opinion piece based on my own education and experience and that of my educator’s. Obviously many people hold their own beliefs regarding this issue and to which they are more than welcome. This is purely my own opinion and what I believe is the best for horse wellbeing. The equipment that is used during a dental examination can make a very large difference to the wellbeing of your horse and the quality of treatment your dentist can provide. To begin, however, I would like to highlight exactly how far back your horse’s molars are in their mouth. The last of the check teeth (referred to as the 11’s in the Triadan system of notation) sit almost in line with the horse’s eye socket. They are seated so far back in the mouth that often it is quite difficult for a dentist to properly examine these teeth even with a full gag and knowledgeable feel. This is why proper equipment is essential if your dentist is going to do a comprehensive job. So what are the benefits and disadvantages of the different dental techniques? 1. THE NO GAG APPROACH. Unqualified and uneducated dentists and owners often tout using no gag as ‘the more natural, kinder dental examination technique.’ This is the equivalent of your farrier using a damp cloth to trim your horse’s hooves. It may be less intrusive, but to that extent, is completely useless. Without using a gag, a dentist must do one of two things to examine the mouth: either pull the tongue to the side of the mouth, which stops the horse closing its mouth; or place their own hand in the mouth. By pulling the tongue to the side, irreparable damage can be done to the Hyoid Apparatus. The Hyoid Apparatus is a complex cluster of small, very fragile bones that hold the tongue in the head. Once damaged, a horse’s tongue will hang loosely outside of the mouth. Never pull a horse’s tongue further than his lips to avoid damaging this apparatus. As previously mentioned, the horse’s most recessed cheekteeth are the 11’s. Not only are they a long way back, but they are also in the tightest part of the horse’s mouth. The oral arcade naturally narrows as it reaches the throat. The 11’s can grow long and sharp and therefore must be able to be examined and treated properly. Having no gag greatly inhibits the examination and treatment of these rear cheekteeth. The small amount of examination permitted without using a gag also makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to determine to what degree malocclusions exist in the mouth. Malocclusions such as wavemouths, step mouths, ramps and hooks (or extensions) etc. are abnormalities of the mouth that cause irregular wear on the horse’s teeth. These conditions are common and easily maintained by a competent dentist, but if they are ignored or missed they can result in a number of problems including periodontal disease, feed packing, pain, and tooth loss. Without a proper examination of all aspects of

Page 12

A full gag will allow for a safe examination of teeth for both the horse and equine dentist. the horse’s oral arcade (teeth, gums, tongue, palate, lips and salivary ducts), getting the dentist out once a year would be just as useful as trimming your horses feet with a damp cloth. 2. THE SIDE GAG. The side gag is a contraption that slides inside the horse’s cheek and places a spring or wedge between the teeth to stop the horse from closing their mouth properly. Amongst other things, this gag has been known to cause sagittal fractures of the horse’s cheek teeth as they bite down on the spring. Once again this device does not allow for a proper examination as the dentist has very little room to feel and examine. Being able to dictate how wide the horse opens their mouth is essential to being able to properly examine and then properly treat a horse’s teeth, whereas this technique only allows a very small opening and very little control over the examination.

horse during their examination and will close the gag whenever possible to give your horse a moment to chew, swallow, and reset. Wearing a gag will not be your horse’s favourite activity. But like all uncomfortable necessities, such as worming, injections, the girth and the bit, it is something with which your horse will easily cope. A good, qualified dentist will be efficient. They will take their time adjusting the gag and allowing the horse to become accustomed to it whilst also expertly diagnosing your horse’s mouth and deciding on treatment. A usual dental gag will have up to five width settings. A good dentist will rarely go past the third setting, staying well within your horse’s comfort zone. This is the only technique by which you can be sure your dentist has effectively examined and treated your horse. It may look medieval, but it allows your dentist to inspect the entire oral cavity. If you’re curious, I always suggest you ask to have a before and after feel of your horse’s mouth and ask for explanations. Your dentist should be more than happy to point out the particular sharpness or abnormality they will treat. I love when clients take an interest in what I do for their horse, as it fascinates me and I love to talk about it. It also ensures that owners are engaged with their horse’s oral health, which benefits all parties.

Questioning the use of the word “sound” By DAVID LOVELL BSVSC Determining whether a horse is sound should also raise the the question of if being sound for what.

many horses are branded as lame when they really aren’t, but that is another story. For a horse to be lame, there has to be pain, and that is manifest as a limp as the horse is moving.

been a very useful animal. By the very nature of the litigious society that we live in, the veterinary pre purchase examination has to be very thorough and complete. There are very few animals on this planet that do not have some issue or the other, which are detected by a competent veterinarian. They have usually been present for a very long time, and in very many instances, are not having any active effect on the horse. So many of these horses are rejected at purchase. Probably the most common issue I am referring to are “silent” lesions or changes detected on survey x-rays, but there are very many other conditions as well. The interpretation of these findings is the critical element, and this is where a very experienced person is invaluable when purchasing a horse. The most demanding discipline that horses are used for is racing, and this is where a very large number of “break-down” lesions develop. Racing, particularly thoroughbred, is extreme, supra-maximal exercise. The horses are travelling at maximum speed, in a compact group of other galloping horses, negotiating turns, a vigorously active jockey on their back

Short stepping, (whatever that means), irregular in the canter, throwing the head, etc, etc, do not class the horse as lame. For a horse to be lame there must be a discernible limp as the horse walks or trots. Grade 2/5 lameness means that the limp can be observed constantly and this horse, in my view, is lame and unsound. Some horses with Grade 1/5 lameness, (very subtle or only detectable under certain relatively extreme circumstances), can often be suitable for performance, as long as the cause is properly defined and understood and is being properly managed. So the question returns to “sound for what?” This is for the intended purpose for the horse. The most common place where the issue arises is obviously in the pre purchase examination prior to the final decision to actually buy the horse. Unfortunately far too many horses are deemed to have “failed” the examination at pre purchase, and the transaction is cancelled. This is very often unfortunate as many, many, very functional and suitable horses are relegated to the scrap heap. In many of these cases, the biggest loser is the prospective purchaser as they have possibly missed out on what would have

Probably the most incorrectly used and abused word in the equine industry is “sound”. All the knowledgeable, (possibly not so knowledgeable) people in the equine community are usually more than ready to express an opinion as to whether or not an individual horse is sound or not. Simply stated, this is a fairly ridiculous statement. The question has to be, “sound for what?” I have a very firm conviction that, (excluding some medical and functional issues such as eyesight), the only condition that automatically classifies a horse as “unsound”, is lameness. Bear in mind that we are usually talking about performance, and no one can argue that if a horse is clinically lame, the animal must be in some pain, and it is not in the animal’s best welfare interests to ask him to go out and work for human satisfaction and pleasure. There can be some argument as to what actually is “lame”, and

Very few horses are totally “unsound” From page 14

These horses often race on a surface that is not perfectly smooth. The situation is primed for injuries to occur. Fortunately catastrophic problems are rare, most of the problems that racehorses develop are “wear and tear” issues that develop over time and are the result of subtle mechanical failures that develop from the sustained pressure and micro trauma that is happening. More than 90% of these occur in either the tendon/suspensory apparatus, or what are called the “high motion” joints, (the knee and fetlock). They are almost always the result of high speed. Knee and fetlock chips, bowed tendons, and suspensory ligament injuries are common. Once they occur, in very many cases they will always re-occur if the horse is continued on in high speed performance. The horse is “unsound for racing”. Conversely, most lameness in performance horses occurs in the so called “low motion” joints such as pastern, foot, and hock. These injuries are the result of on-going stress and strain over a long period of time resulting in degeneration and damage. The “unsound” racehorse fortunately can most often change disciplines and have a very long and rewarding career as a performance horse.

Most issues concerning the “sound” nature of a horse can be managed.

Unfortunately far too many ex racehorses are rejected at examination because of some pre existing racetrack injury that almost certainly will not bother the horse in performance A similar discussion can apply to OCD, (Osteochondrosis Dissecans), lesions that are found during routine survey radiographs at pre purchase. There are many forms, but most commonly we see small smooth bone fragments in joints. The reality is that by far the greatest number of these “chips” will never bother the horse. The issue really depends on the realistic anticipated goals of the purchaser. Yes, everyone dreams that they will make

the highest level in competition and be at the next Olympics, but reality check, only a very small number of people are going to progress to higher levels. Most of the rest of us ride for enjoyment and do not really place a lot of pressure on the horse. OCD in most of these “lesser” competitive individuals, will never be a problem This is why it is very important to receive experienced informed advice when looking at a horse. Many very useful horses are left behind because of over cautious assessments. The key is that the purchaser knows the issues before purchase. It is then a balance between the perceived attributes of the horse that first attracted the buyer, and the weighting of the degree of possible risk associated with progressing. I have a motto that “There is a place for every horse”. Very few horses are totally “unsound”. It all depends on the use that is required for the horse. Also, most problems can be managed to a considerable degree. Please be sure that when receiving pre purchase advice, that you receive several opinions, and do not simply reject the horse. There are very, very, few unsound horses. Many horses are sound for particular usage, in spite of detected “problems” found at pre purchase.

Offers over $750,000 will be considered.

The Horse Report

Defining what is a performance horse ? By TANJA KRAUS When we think of a 'performance horse', it usually brings to mind images of the high level horses in competition - cutting horses, reining, dressage and the like. When I think of a performance horse, I think of my partnership horse. Cooper is my performance horse and sure, he can perform a number of advancing manoeuvres, but that isn't why I call him my performance horse. He is my performance horse because he is my 'go to' - he is Mr Reliable. Now most of you who have met Cooper know that he is 'quiet', but he wasn't always that way, in fact, its only been in the last couple of years that I could really rely on Cooper and 'know' that I could manage him in any situation. He can actually be a very 'up' horse and when that 650 kilos is excited, worried, nervous - or a combination of all three, it can be quite scary. How did he become Mr Reliable? Miles, time, effort, consistency, experiences, time, trust, consistency, time, miles, time - I’m sure you get the drift. Building a performance horse is not going to happen with him sitting in the paddock or you sitting on the couch. It happens spending time together. Cooper and I have done thousands of kilometres (both in the saddle and in the trailer) and he has been everywhere - shows, clinics, beach, trails, arenas, indoors, outdoors, pad-

Creating a performance horse requires time together as a team.

docks, cattle, working equitation, dressage, western, cowboy dressage, team penning you name it and we have probably tried it. Our 'secret' has been just spending quality time together - when I didn't have time to ride I went and did liberty or ground skills in the paddock, when I was working from home I let him in the back yard to eat grass around me and we did clinics and outings all the time. I love clinics as an outing because you have; 1. Someone telling you what to do - so the horse is being 'used', he learns to 'do stuff'. And you get the bonus of learning too! 2. At a clinic it is typically a low energy and a good energy environment. I have lots of people take their young horses to shows to 'get out and about' - why ? Shows are probably the most high energy, stressful places

you can take your horse - and you want him to learn that this is what being 'out' means 'get stressed'? I took Cooper to so many clinics before I took him to a show - so when we finally got to the high stress environment he went 'what’s wrong with those horses?' not 'oh that’s how we behave when we are out'. 3. Clinics are generally a weekend or longer event - your horse learns to appreciate his rest times. 4. Group clinics are good exposure for your horse to be with a group of horses and not get worried. At a dressage or something like that, you may only stand around with three or four horses - at a clinic he gets to stand around and be around 10 or so horses, all 'doing stuff'. Cooper and I have done miles together in the saddle - both alone and with others. I know a lot of people don't like riding alone and I’m certainly not telling you to go and do it but when you are with your horse alone, he has only you to look to. Perhaps leading him out could be an option. So I haven't even started talking about building strength, fitness, knowledge or skill yet and yet this is an article about ‘The Performance Horse’. Step one is mutual trust. Mutual trust builds through each one being able to rely on the other. You need to know how he is going to react in a situation, and he needs to know how you are going to react in a situation.

“As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The Horse Report

Spend time to build a partnership  From page 25

The only way to know - is to go! Spending time with your horse gives you insight into how he reacts to things. I have had people at clinics ride in a group of 17 people with several horses cantering and say 'wow I didn't think he would be ok with that'. Now we set the exposure up safely so both the horse and rider could stay as safe as possible - but now she knows that he's ok with that much activity - is it set in stone ? No. But it’s a start. So she can go home and put that ride in the 'bank'. What about the horse ? He needs to know how you are going to react in situations. We always think of our own fears of 'what’s he going to do' but what about the horse? What about his fear "does she know what to do here?" "Can I trust him ?" The only way for our horse to learn if they can trust us is - time together. Consistency in our actions and time together are the two things that develops our horses trust in us. The consistency can come from the training of the manoeuvres - this is where the 'stuff' comes in. The 'stuff' that we learn at clinics an from coaches, if done consistently and in a consistent way - this is the dialogue that develops our horse into our partnership horse. The advanced manoeuvres come after this.

Time is the key to developing a performance horse.

You can't build a quality advanced manoeuvre if the horse doesn't trust you. You may be able to build the manoeuvre, but if the horse doesn't trust, he will be braced and the brace will show in the move - it will be choppy, stiff and lack fluidity and grace. My performance horse must be my partnership horse first and foremost - the advanced moves are a result of our training, but my partnership horse is who keeps us safe. This brings me to an experience I had recently. I hadn't ridden Cooper for about 10 days. He is still on full feed, so I expected him to be a bit fresh. I decided to take him towards the local trail that we use - if he was calm and quiet we would turn around and come home at the turn off - about a four km round trip, if he was full of himself, we would do the trail about 10 kms. So I saddled him up and jumped straight on - I didn't have space to do ground work, but this was a calculated decision - I consider ground exercises a vital part of any horses training - from beginner to advanced, so the goal isn't to get to the point where I don't do

ground work anymore. But the goal is to get to the point where I don't 'need' it (on my performance horse) to get him ready to ride. So I don't do any ground exercises, and I get on and head down the road. I’m doing all my foundation skills at the walk. I change from being on a soft feel rein, to a freestyle rein often. I cross the road and the railway line, and I'm cruizing along on a freestyle rein and I hear this sound. I look up and there is a swarm of bees surrounding us! I immediately ask Cooper to canter off, and as we are cantering along the bees are surrounding us. I’m just hoping that neither of us get bitten! Now in the surprise of being asked to lope off, combined with him not being ridden for 10 days, Cooper did drop his head down, but nothing further from that. This is why I consider him to be my performance horse - he handled the situation, and I could trust that he would listen to me in the stress of it all. He had the noise, the bees hitting him, and then me telling him to go, go, go! He didn't ask questions - he just went went went! This situation only ended up this good because he trusts me, and I trust him. We've experienced a lot together. So step one of building your performance horse ? Spending time together. Happy trails.

Dalby prepares for annual Stock Horse sale Preparations are under way for the 2016 Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale, held every year on the first weekend in December. The sale has now grown to become the premier Australian Stock Horse sale in the country. Back in 2009 the sale was about to fold so the local committee of Darling Downs branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society, who were the owners of the sale, approached GDL to take over the sale management and marketing. The first GDL sale, in 2010 sold 98 out of 120 Stock Horses to average $8,000 and gross $790,250. Last year GDL sold 196 out of 231 entries to gross $1.7 million. An incentive competition was formed for past sale horses so as each year has progressed more and more Dalby graduates have become eligible to compete. These incentive campdrafts ran along side the traditional Open Campdraft competition. This year the competitions are only available to past sale horses and, for the first time, the horses catalogued this year are eligible, although in a restricted manner. There will be no "outside" horses on the showground, only those

past and present Dalby sale horses. A new Stockman Challenge competition has been included for younger horses, four years and under. Considering the drought conditions in Queensland for the last three to four years, the sale agents GDL have done extremely well to be able to double the sale volume in dollars and entries.

GDL are expecting that the improved rural economy due to the recent rains will lead to great demand from the station buyers. Last year mares increased their average from $8,000 to $10,000 11 mares sold for $20,000 or more to a top of $43,000. The geldings have increased in value from $5,600 in 2013 to $6,000 in 2014 and $6,600 last year. In the previous year 13 geldings sold for $10,000 or over

to a top of $15,000. Stallions have always been in small supply with offerings over the last six years from one to eighteen. Last year five stallions sold to a top of $20,000 to average $14,000. Younger horses sell well at Dalby and last year 48 geldings from two to four years sold from $2,500 to $12,000 to average $5,844. The Twilight Sale, on Saturday night last year, was a new and successful venture, so this will be taking place again this year, with approximately 50 high quality entries. GDL Stud Manager Harvey Weyman - Jones said there would be a few less entries this year, but quality would be up. “We are pleased that the local committee have approved most of our recommendations this year, after first proposing them three years ago,” he said. “We are totally focussed on improving the sale and to exclude 'outside' horses from the weekend, will be a great benefit to all sellers and buyers." The Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale is one from December 2-4 at the Dalby Showgrounds.
