Polo in the Park returns to Adelaide’s Victoria Park Racetrack as part of the 2015 Australian International Three Day Event. Photo:australian3de.com.au

Polo in the Park offers a new look to Game of Kings The popular twilight Polo in the Park, part of the 2015 Australian International Three Day Event (Aus3de), will return to Adelaide's Victoria Park Racecourse on Friday, November 20, in a display of power, beauty and equestrian athleticism. Open to the public for free, as well as VIP packages, the Aus3de Polo in the Park event is polo for the people, attracting crowds to the beautiful parklands to watch the Game of Kings. South Australian celebrities, including fashion icon Liza Emanuele and Antimo Iannella, will judge the Fashions in the Field competition in the VIP Chairman's Lounge. Aus3DE Event Director, Gillian Rolton said the Polo in the Park was originally created as a mini event for the spectators of the Australian International Three Day Event. "This is the third year we have featured the Polo in the Park as part of the Australian International Three Day Event," she said. "It is a popular event, and attracts equestrian enthusiasts, corporates, general public and tourists alike." “The event will see some of the best players from across

Australia battle it out in an A Grade polo match." Mirroring the effect Twenty20 has had on cricket, the 'Polo in the Park' will feature music, live commentary during the match, and player interviews during the half-time break. Bars with direct views of the polo field will be open to the public, along with fresh food outlets and music, creating a lively twilight setting to unwind after work. There's also the option of enjoying the spectacle from the exclusive VIP marquee, which includes luxury lounges, arenaside tables, food and drinks and the opportunity to meet with Australia's elite polo players. General admission is free. Gates open at 6pm and the event concludes at 10pm. For more information, visit www.australian3de.com.au

The Power of Pink dressage and showjumping Tweed Valley Equestrian Group (TVEG) held their annual breast cancer fundraiser event ,The Power of Pink Dressage & Showjumping day on October 10th & 11th at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. The event now in its seventh year was awarded Community Event of the Year by Tweed Shire Council in 2011, twice a finalist in Equestrian Queensland's Event of the Year and a finalist in The Wonders of Women awards. So far the club has raised just over $38,000 for Breast Cancer Research. All funds raised are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "Last year we raised a staggering $11,300. This year it looks like we will be very close to hitting $15,000,” TVEG committee member Keighley Leeson said. “ We had 159 dressage entries and 70 rounds of show jumping over the two days. Our monster online auction raised just over $6000. The introduction of official dressage attracted large numbers with entries right up to Intermediate 1." The event attracted riders from Port Macquarie to Brisbane and the Tweed Valley Equestrian Group awarded prizes to the winners in all divisions as well as fun prizes for the Pinkest Horse, Pinkest Rider and "Pretty in Pink" best dressed horse and rider in pink. This annual event has become very popular with the local equestrian enthusiasts. This year the event attracted a large number of junior riders (all girls) which was great to see as it promoted breast cancer awareness and the need for continued reasearch into the disease. Dressage is often a very serious sport, so to see every rider with a splash of pink somewhere was fantastic. "Dressage is mainly dominated by women; thus the event is a perfect partner to raise awareness and a fun way to raise money for such a worthy cause,” Ms Leeson said.

Team does NSW Proud at Nationals The NSW State Pony Club team have returned home from competing in South Australia at the National Pony Club Championships, bringing exceptional results with them. Forty riders representing NSW travelled to compete in the Pony Club Australia National Championships held in Murray Bridge, South Australia from the 29th September to the 4th October 2015. For many competitors and their families the Pony Club Nationals is a once in a lifetime opportunity, held every two years in a different Australian state. Shock Wave Therapy an option By DAVID LOVELL BVSC Don't worry; I am not going to talk about the shock therapy graphically depicted in films such as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", or “Clockwork Orange”. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) isn't a cure for your horse's emotional or mental problems, but it might be a treatment option for a number of your equine athlete's orthopaedic and soft tissue ailments. ESWT has been around since the 1970s. In humans with bladder stones, doctors began to use ESW lithotripsy to fracture stones within the bladder so they can pass without surgery. Inadvertently, it was noticed that patients subjected to repeat courses of ESWT developed increased bone density in the surrounding tissues. Since then, ESWT's use as a therapeutic tool in human and veterinary medicine has flourished. Clinicians in Europe and the USA began using the modality in horses in the late 1990’s and the horse stabling area at the 2000 Sydney Olympics resounded to the loud clicking of competitive horses

Recent studies have revealed ESWT's ability to decrease inflammation and hasten healing

ment, as clinicians tried to recoup some of their considerable investment. This is a shame as the modality can be very beneficial. As with everything in medicine and healing, it is essential that the mechanisms of action be thoroughly understood and the conditions selected for treatment should be such that a direct response would be anticipated. Early on, there was a belief that the treatment “deadened” pain and many competitive horses had their so called “sore backs” bombarded with shock waves immediately before competition. The process has now been banned by the Jockey club for the week before a horse races. With the increasing popularity of ESWT, scientists have evaluated mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy and safety for use on equine bone and soft tissue. Recent studies have revealed ESWT's ability to decrease inflammation; hasten healing time; enhance neo-vascularisation (blood vessel formation) and cellular proliferation; improve fibre alignment in tendon repair; increase cellular bone protein production, leading to faster bone healing; and recruit stem cells to injured tissues. Scientists also showed it can help alleviate pain from some degenerative diseases. Shock waves are tiny impulses of high energy waves emitted from a generator that are able to pass through tissues stimulating certain cells as they go. There are various ESWT generators for

being subjected to therapy. As with many “new” innovations, the initial boom has waned, in part because the therapy is quite expensive, results take some time to become apparent, and there was a degree of overuse of the equip-

veterinary use, and the majority of clinical trials and research studies use focused units. Focused units deliver a specific amount of energy to a measurable "focused" tissue depth/area, so that the veterinarian can treat a specific area more precisely. Each unit has a variation in its waveform and a different effect on tissue. Unfocused units (radial pressure wave therapy, or RPWT) vary greatly in waveform and energy distributed to tissues compared to the focused units. It's important to understand how each unit acts on tissue so the horse benefits properly. Treatment protocols vary, and veterinarians use different probes depending on the depth of the injury. In general, a single ESWT treatment consists of 5002,000 pulses or "shocks" to the area every seven to twenty one days for an average of three total treatments (or as needed based on clinical signs/improvement). In our hands, shock wave therapy can be very useful in certain situations. Our belief is that nature’s inflammatory mechanism, which is responsible for all healing, is a wonderful process and in by far the majority of situations, is more than adequate and return to function occurs. The initial phases of an any injury have more than enough stimulators for healing and natures process to occur but in many situations in the horse, the damage is severe and healing begins to slow and stagnate before complete return to normal has occurred. This is where we use shock waves. We attempt to focus on areas of stalled healing and bombard the area with shock waves. This now re-stimulates the natural healing response and encourages further healing and resolution and removal of damage tissue. We have had some spectacular results in conditions such as bowed tendons, suspensory ligaments, splints, and reduction of scar tissue masses We believe that the future of the use of ESWT in the horse holds great promise. The key is to be understand the therapy and be selective in cases that are subjected to treatment Next issue I plan to discuss High Suspensory Disease, a relatively common, but extremely difficult problem to deal with. I believe shock therapy can be very useful for this condition as part of the process.

The Horse Report

Is your Horse Fit or just plain Fat By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist

Why horse owners over feed Horse owners should leave their subjective notions about appropriate equine body conditions at the stable door. Some horse owners seem to think that all quarter horses should be heavy and well covered and others feel that Thoroughbreds should be leaner in body condition, however body condition is dependent on genetic predisposition, breed of horse, workload, type of feed and many, many more factors. Horses accumulate fat at varying rates in different locations of the body. Therefore a solid Quarter Horse may seem to have good body weight, but could be carrying excess fat at the ribs, neck, or tail head. There is definitely a perception that horses should actually be plump, however this is extremely unhealthy, just as it is for humans and can lead to many serious health issues. Fat located at the neck tends to be very hard, forming the term cresty neck. Fat at the withers will also feel hard. However fat at the shoulders and the tail head will usually be malleable, and fat at the ribs will be soft, the size of the horse's stomach is usually not relevant as a horse in a malnutrition state can have a big stomach. Feeding a balanced ration to suit the individual is essential, horses do not need to be fat, I like a horse to be well covered, but so you can still feel the last three ribs easily. Good muscle tone is essential over the hindquarters. The horse should not have any pockets of fat, anywhere on the body. Page 16

Katja Weimann event rider Overweight horses can not perform efficiently and also become fatigued more quickly. Overweight horses may also have hormone related problems which can contribute to temperament changes and lethargy. Having young horse's too heavy places too much strain on growing joints and can lead to joint conditions including Arthritis. Some may think that the horse above is a healthy weight, what do you think? The answer is no this horse is not a healthy weight, this horse is overweight, and there are clear pockets of fat in the neck area, rump and flanks. Feeding the High Performance Horse In this months article I have included recommendations for feeding the high performance horse, so you can obtain an idea on how to feed a horse at this level. Horses working hard, between 5-6 sessions per week of solid training require the nutrients to sustain the workload. Eventers, for example, require an excellent energy intake on a

daily basis. Training horses at this level requires great knowledge and understanding of the horse's anatomy and limitations. I like to use a combination of the Johnsons Natural Formula feed Velocity 2 and either AlfalfaPlus or EveryHorse with most high performance horses, it is a nice combination and these feeds are a great design because you can mix and match them to suit, a good daily formula, electrolytes added and naturally a good level of hay and you will be in business. This is an easy beautifully balanced way to feed your horse. For high performance horses that tend to be a little nervous, oils are another option to provide energy without heating the horse too much. I love cold pressed oil, preferably organic, far better from a health stand point and cold press oils don't reach high temperatures when being extracted like the standard refined oils, so there is no risk of carcinogens with cold pressed oils. ‰ Continued page 17

Fit or just plain Fat? - assessing equine body condition Since its development, veterinarians, nutritionists, and horse owners have used Henneke's system to regulate feed intake and exercise to address equine obesity, a condition that puts horses at risk for myriad physical ailments ranging from laminitis and founder to metabolic conditions including diabetes. The scale also has become indispensable to animal welfare authorities, because it provides an objective way to identify malnourished horses. Nine numeric scores correlate to the fat amounts detected in those locations. Score values range from 1 (poor or emaciated) to 9 (extremely fat). Detailed condition descriptions correspond to each score value. Using the Scale A horse may score a 5 at the ribs, but higher on other check points such as the neck and tail head. Then take the average. If a horse scores 5.38, score at half-point increments." Horses that score at a 5 (moderate) or 6 (moderate to fleshy) on the scale are considered in good body condition. There is no advantage to have a horse at a 7 (fleshy) or 8 (fat) or 9 body condition. Those that score 9 on the scale generally suffer from some type of metabolic disorder.

The Horse Report

Diet recommendations for performance horses Most diets I have prepared for eventers over the years have been Thoroughbreds, and my experience with these horses is that they can be a little tricky due to the stress involved and their fitness campaign, also many have raced previously. Very often there can be a reasonable amount of travel involved when competing at 1, 2 or 3 day events as most courses are located in country areas. Horses travelling can become stressed so precautions must be taken to ensure the level of stress is reduced. Using calming herbs or complimentary prescription formulas prior to travel may assist and may also be of benefit during the competition itself. Also make sure you are keeping high level performances horses hydrated, so a good electrolyte is very important especially in warmer climates and during the summer months. The other consideration is preventative measures for muscle or joint pain, horses trained to an elite level will experience pain most of the time and this must be managed effectively and safely and can be done by using certain natural pain relieving and healing nutrients. Surprisingly you do not require high levels of these nutrients to manage your horse's muscles and joints. Any elite horse or human athlete will experience levels of pain and inflammation, either through training or competition. Performance levels will plummet if preventative measures are not put in place. The diet I have recommended will suit most eventers and high level performance horses who do not suffer from nervousness. For horses that have a tendency to be nervous, reduce the grain content and add oil plus a natural calmative. If there is a problem with increasing weight then you may need to add

RECOMMENDED DIET - MORNING

Johnsons Natural Formula Velocity 2

1 dipper (1.2kgs approx)

Johnsons Natural Formula EveryHorse

1 & ½ dippers

Hay good quality grass/meadow/lucerne

2 biscuits

EquiSoy

½-1 cup if weight increase is required

ADDED DAILY FORMULA

Oydane Hi Performance formula

Added electrolytes such as ElectroPlus

RECOMMENDED DIET - NIGHT

Johnsons Natural Formula Velocity 2

1 dipper

Johnsons Natural Formula EveryHorse

1 & ½ dippers

Hay/ this can be Lucerne hay which is 2 biscuits excellent something like EquiSoy but you will only require about ½ to 1 cup per day/ For nervous horses add ½ cup of oil morning and night and reduce the Velocity 2 by 1/3 - ½. The Johnsons Natural Formula feeds are long stem fibre, grade 1 export quality and no added nasties; this feed encourages the normal digestive processes of the horse whilst providing a well balanced diet high in roughage. To obtain weight, TheHorse.com has a tool you can use to calculate your horse's weight automatically using those measurements. Or you can manually make the calculation by multiplying

the girth measurement by itself, then by the horse's length. Take-Home Message Always seek advice from a trained practitioner if you are not sure how to achieve the correct weight that is healthy for your horse. Remember horses only have small stomachs and do not require large amounts of feed. Feeding a simple well balanced diet consisting of some grain, perhaps some chaff and hays, plus a good natural supplement is really all that is required. If there are other problems then these need to be addressed on an individual basis. For more advice phone 1300HIFORM or email enq@hiform.com.au

Say no to Negative Nancy and Downer Dave By TANJA KRAUS

Can you hear them ? Sure you can - you know, when you are working with your horse , that little voice in your head that says things like; I’m not good at this. I give up This is too hard I can't make this any better He’s not getting it I keep making mistakes I just don't get it I can’t, I’m just confusing him I’ll never be able to do this. You know who I'm talking about now right ? Let me tell you a little secret about that voice. We all hear it. Its a pretty common 'human condition'. Let me tell you something else about that voice - the more you listen, the more it talks! And the more it talks the more those words become a reality! Those words can get so real, and so true that they can change you. I feel like writing each of these sentences on a

new line because they are so important. Your words can change you. Negative Nancy and Downer Dave can take over your life. Guess what happens when you add a horse into the mix ? You have something to blame! He scares me. He hurt me. He ignores me. He is stupid. He is doing it to annoy me. Soon enough you have become a heat seeking missile for - the crap! All you notice is the 'bad' stuff - so what do you see? All the 'bad' stuff! You may spend an hour with your horse, and during that time he was his normal self - but for five minutes he was distracted and scatty. So what do you do? You go home and say to your partner "that horse was an idiot today". And that’s where it sits in your mind/ You've forgotten about the 55 minutes of good that happened - your focus is on the five minutes of undesirable behaviour.

Light Horse memorial unveiled The Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Stuart Robert, has unveiled a memorial to the Australian Light Horse at Woombye, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Conceived by the Buderim Men's Shed, following consultation with their resident artist Jeff Franklin, it was agreed the memorial would take the form of a 'Waler' horse, a figure synonymous with the mounted regiments of the First World War. The 'Waler', looking tired and weary from battle, symbolises both the Light Horsemen and their horses who never made it home. Speaking at the dedication service, Mr Robert highlighted the important role community projects play in sharing the stories of Australia at war. "A key aim of the Anzac Centenary national program is to improve understanding and awareness of Australia's war time history,” he said. “The Buderim Men's Shed Light Horse Memorial project is a wonderful example of a community leading this education process for future generations. "The Australian Government has been able to help communities across Australia pay tribute to our First World War servicemen and women with more than 1,651 grants across 150 federal electorates awarded

The contribution made to the Australian Light Horse by the famed ‘Whaler’ horse will be honoured in a new memorial unveiled on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

funding to the value of $16.8 million. "The Buderim Men's Shed received $53,413 in funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to design, build and install this beautiful Light Horse Memorial. A lasting tribute to the men of the Australian Light Horse regiments." The Anzac Centenary 2014 to 2018 is the most significant period of commemoration

in Australia’s history. During this time Australians will not only remember the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front and in the Middle East during World War 1, but the nation commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women across all conflicts across the generations.

THE HORSE

THAT TALKS Did you know that horses talk? You only need to listen to the signs they show you to understand what they’re saying. They could talk to you by hanging the tongue out, getting the tongue over the bit or rolling the tongue back. These are all signs of bit pain and are their way of telling you. Those aren’t the only signs: many may chew, grind, grab or chomp on the bit because they are trying to hold the bit pressure off their tongue. Some will lean on the rein, hang on one rein bad, pull the reins through your hands, head toss, run through the bit, or bolt, while others will rear and buck to get rid of the pain or the rider at the end of the reins. Horses will open their mouth to give them more room, enabling them to roll their tongue back or hang it out to escape the bit pain. Others will rub their face on their leg or the rider at the end of the ride - this is them saying “Please get the bit out of my mouth! It has hurt me!” There is extensive research behind the Winning Tongue Plate Bit, and combined with input from leading trainers and riders the design of the bits has helped to overcome these problems. These riders have stated it’s like having power steering and the difference the WTP bit makes is comparable to wearing comfortable slippers all day instead of high heels.

FIG TREE POCKET ARENA GETS OLYMPIC SIZED TICK OF APPROVAL Athens Olympic Eventer, Rebel Morrow, has been the first rider to test out the newly surfaced sand arena at Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club. Morrow joined with Brisbane City Councillor and member for Walter Taylor Ward Julian Simmonds to officially open the arena on Saturday September 5. The 120m by 80m arena was resurfaced thanks to a $100,000 Brisbane City Council Community Sports Club Grant. A double-layered base was laid, before the arena was laser-levelled, and a top layer of river sand was applied, offering an international quality surface for a range of equestrian disciplines. www.bit.ly/myhorse_hr h Cr Simmonds said the work is one of a number of Community Sports Grants being offered by council. "The Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Club is a wonderful local asset and Council is delighted to provide support for a club that is keeping hundreds of local residents active and healthy," Cr Simmonds said. "It is such a unique venue, with the cross country course set along the Email: customerservice@myhorsesuppliesdirect.com.au picturesque Brisbane River, and is approximately 12km from the City Centre, which is fantastic for competitors and spectators alike.
