The stage production of War Horse continues to impress and amaze Sydney audiences and will be heading to Brisbane in July.
War Horse blows audiences away with innovation THE award - winning stage production, War Horse, is on the move and will be heading to Brisbane when its Sydney season wraps up on June 30. Having already `blown away’ audiences in Melbourne, the production has drawn more acclaim in Sydney and soon it will be Brisbane ‘s turn to marvel at the unique stage show. Since its world premiere in London in 2007, War Horse has won numerous prestigious awards including two Laurence Olivier Awards, five Tony Awards and four Outer Critics' Circle Awards amongst a host of others. Nick Stafford's stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book, War Horse is a magnificent drama which tells the heart-wrenching story of Joey, the beloved horse of a boy called Albert, who is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of World War I and shipped to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. At the show’s heart are astonishing puppets strong enough for men to ride, created by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on the stage. Life size horses traverse the stage, their flanks, hides and sinews built of steel, leather and aircraft cables. Actors, working with these dynamic puppets, lead Australian audiences on an emotionally-charged journey through history. Steven Spielberg's movie adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel, released by DreamWorks Studios in late 2011, was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. Renowned trainer shares her skills Sylvia Zerbini is coming to Australia in June. Be there to watch and learn as Sylvia Zerbini trains eight horses and their handlers at each clinic over a two day period. EQUITANA Sydney takes up the Snowy festival challenge Australian Horsemanship at its best will be on show this year at EQUITANA Sydney. Following in the spirit of the The Man from Snowy River Festival, which was established in 1995 to celebrate the centenary year of AB `Banjo’ Paterson's book of poems, The Man from Snowy River, Australia’s biggest horse spectacular will feature something special this year. The festival, which is also a celebration of Australian bush folklore, highlights the amazing skills and traditions of the nation’s hardy horsemen. EQUITANA Australia has now become a partner to this unique event to present a `country meets city’ version of the challenge at its Sydney event in November, where winners and placegetters from previous events ride off to see who is the best horseman or
horsewoman in the country! The challenge will take place over two days with contestants undergoing a test of skills required by the stockmen of yesteryear. The clock will be ticking while contenders pack and saddle a horse with all the gear required for an outback trek, show the skilful use of a stockwhip hitting targets as the horse and rider gallop over obstacles and show their cattle handling skills in the team penning component which requires the riders to separate three cows from a mob of 30 and then put them into a pen at the other end of the arena in only six minutes. Tips for inhibiting mould and mildew Mould and mildew are one of the most frustrating problems in leather care. Generically, mould and mildew are fungi, relatives of the mushrooms you slice up. As the tiny `fruiting bodies’ at their tips mature, they bloom and burst to spew billions of microscopic spores into the air. Rub a patch of mould or mildew and you send those spores forth to multiply throughout everything in your tack room. Once mould and mildew spores get into leather fibres, it is almost impossible to completely destroy them without destroying the leather, too. Inhibiting their growth takes diligent care with the right products. If mould and mildew invade your tack room, take these steps to limit its damage: Take mouldy leather out of the tack room and clean it outdoors. That way, you’ll avoid filling the air in the tack room with mould spores that will simply infect other items in the confined space. Have a supply of old rags that you’re willing to throw out. Start wiping away any surface mould with a wet rag. Wipe and capture as much of the mould as you can then throw the rag away. Don’t rinse and reuse your rags. That only spreads the mould spores. Use an old toothbrush to clean stitching lines and crevices. You can find old cavalry manuals and books of Victorian household hints that recommend using vinegar, household bleach or alcohol to remove mould and mildew from leather. While these may have fungicidal properties, they can all damage the leather’s fibre matrix. Wiping with dilute solutions is a superficial effort no more effective than the plain water you've already used. Finish cleaning the leather using a water-based, pH neutral product to float away any remaining organic surface dirt that could support mould and mildew growth. Dry the tack in the sun to allow the water to evaporate and to take advantage of the disinfectant properties of the sun’s ultraviolet light. Some traditional leather cleaners, notably those translucent bars of saddle soap that smell so good, are not good choices for mouldy leather. For starters, they contain glyc-

erin. Glycerin acts as a `humectant’ which means it tends to attract and hold atmospheric moisture. While that property may help the leather fibres remain flexible, it also sets your tack up for future mould and mildew growth. Second, because soap is alkaline, overuse can begin to reverse the tanning process (vegetabletanned leathers have an acidic pH) and ultimately can weaken the leather. Instead of using saddle soap, condition your leather with a penetrating, pH-neutral product that will lubricate the leather without introducing moisture and which will inhibit mould and mildew growth. Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner is the only product currently in the equine market whose claim to inhibit mould and mildew has been tested and accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA declares Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner a “stand alone product”, meaning that there is no other product in its category. Products which contain a little vinegar or another surface wiping additive in order to support a claim of mould and mildew resistance are not much more useful than wiping with plain water. If mould and mildew have invaded saddle pads, blankets or other washables, thoroughly clean these items in hot, soapy water. Add household bleach to the wash water if the items are colourfast. Adding two ounces of Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner to Leather Laundry Solution in the wash water will remove mouldy odours and inhibit future mould growth. Dry everything thoroughly before returning the items to storage.
Non-washable fabrics may need to be dry cleaned, sponged with a disinfectant solution. Discard them if they are mildewed. Wipe down the insides of storage trunks or closets with a solution of water, detergent and 10 percent household bleach to disinfect them and allow them to dry completely before filling them back up again. A light bulb left on in a closet may provide just the right amount of drying heat. Place bags of desiccant materials inside large trunks and renew them periodically according to the manufacturer’s directions.
Mould and mildew typically thrive where it is dark, warm and damp (they flourish when the humidity ranges from 65 to 85 percent), if your tack room is like that, consider installing a window to provide sunlight and ventilation. Install a dehumidifier, leave a light bulb or two burning. Hang large bags of desiccant and renew them periodically. Be proactive to keep mould and mildew at bay. After each use, clean dirt and sweat off tack and allow the undersides of saddles and headstalls to dry thoroughly before putting them back into the tack room. Joint injuries in young horses in particular have a real impact, not just on the horse, but also the owner. Such injuries can lead to diseases which can result in acute to a more chronic condition such as osteoarthritis. Joint injuries are the most common lameness within performance horses and horses in general and very often means the horse’s career will come to an end. Cartilage that normally covers the ends of adjoining bones may be damaged and therefore joint movement is reduced and becomes quite sore. Articular cartilage is of great importance for the joints to function normally and remain pain-free, however this tissue has a limited ability to repair, and very often joint disease will progress as the years go by. There is no doubt that the younger the horse, the more chance there is of healing successfully. There have been quite a lot of studies focusing on synovial joint fluid and how the joints heal to find new ways of managing this type of damage. Studies involving other animal species may help to learn more about how to repair cartilage cells in horses, the Mexican salamander has the ability to regenerate and repair damaged cartilage and this was shown through recent studies. These studies are quite exciting for the future of equine joint health. How will you deal with pain? How often do we consider the possibility that our horses may be in pain? If we consider our own life it is highly unusual for any of us to go through a week, a month, a year without pain. Pain is very common in horses, possibly more common than you actually think. There are many aspects of body language or behaviour that will indicate pain in horses, one of the most common symptoms can be tenseness or nervousness and a reluctance to work happily. A large percentage of horses that appear to be nervous are actually in pain. To determine if your horse is in pain, there are many ways to approach this. One would be to contact a body therapist such as massage, acupuncture, a veterinarian or chiropractor. The best approach is to eliminate the cause of the pain once you have done this you can then decide which is the best way with professional advice to treat the problem. Try to relate yourself to your horse you may Page 12
then become more aware. Knowing full well that pain can interfere with our work and our day-to-day lives, we would probably organise pain relief in the form of drugs or natural therapy remedies and certainly it is likely we would go and have a massage to alleviate the discomfort. We are also aware that when we are riding if we are in pain, it is difficult to concentrate but also to ride correctly. If we think more about how we approach managing pain and look at it the same way as managing pain in our horses, it is likely will come up with a solution that can help. If we consider the horse’s anatomy, they have a very rigid spine and the only movable parts attached to that spine are the neck, head and tail. The legs propel the horse along the ground. The horse is not like a dog or cat, it cannot curl up in a ball - it does not have the same flexibility. Once we add a rider, saddle, bridle and then ask the horse to perform, this begins to add enormous stress to the body. Bad temperament which is just behavioural is not very common in horses. I always believe there is a reason for a horse to behave badly. Horses show discomfort in many ways, some handle pain very efficiently while others don’t handle it at all. Some horses react to pain in a strong violent fashion, some just deal with it, but the performance level either way is going to drop considerably. As a rider, if you are not aware of this pain then it is likely you will continue riding your
horse in the same way as you have done previously. This can create further problems with your horse. Once a horse is suffering pain of any description he will tend to expect discomfort, after all horses are creatures of habit. We must always remind ourselves that most horses have huge hearts and will continue to work regardless of any discomfort he or she may be feeling. Preventing pain I believe it is very important to put preventative measures into place where pain is concerned. I think we should all consider that almost every day, almost every week, almost every month, your horse will suffer some form of discomfort, so preventative measures will help to reduce the risk of increased pain. There are a number of complementary therapies that horse owners can use which are safe and highly effective. If you check with the manufacturer you will also be comforted knowing that these products will not return a positive swab if tested, but please always ask the manufacturer for this information. If your horse is pain-free we are he will be much happier. I highly recommend having horses massaged, an acupuncture session, chiropractic session or equine tension release session at least once a month. Also providing daily support for joints and muscles will allow your horse to recover more efficiently and reduce the risk of discomfort through his workload. Continued page 13

There will also be physical changes with young horses as they develop further. Treating pain Finding a way to manage any of the symptoms associated with pain or to treat the complaint is achievable with the use of many complimentary medicines and treatments but may also include conventional medicine. The prevalence of pain is so common, but in most cases can be managed. Conditions such as arthritis, ring bone, side bone and the like can in many cases be managed by complimentary medicines longterm. In fact did you know that arthritic patients are far more likely to remain healthy if the activity level is maintained? This is far healthier for your horse and generally there are very few, if any side-effects compared to drugs. There are many conditions and ailments that can be treated very successfully with complimentary therapy. I believe that we must use all the tools available to manage these conditions in horses. Always make sure that you seek professional advice when thinking about using any herbs or other natural remedies as part of your treatment. Remember just because it is a herb does not mean it is safe to use. Many herbs have quite significant sideeffects and contra indications and this is the reason why they should not be used without supervision. The occurrence of pain takes place as a result of the activation of at least two major neurological networks in the mind/body. Pain is an extremely complex experience given the complex association within and
between these neurological networks and between the pain sensing systems and other psycho-neuro endocrine networks. A number of botanical medicines have proven effective for relieving different forms of pain observed in clinical trials. The methods of action of many analgesic herbs are not always understood, though some have been well defined. Basic neurobiology of pain The two pay networks are known as slow and fast systems. Fast pain means that the reaction is quick, 100 micro seconds and the pain is sharp, electric and acute. Slow pain is more burning, throbbing, aching, chronic. The peripheral nerve fibres of fast pain are the A-delta low threshold; the peripheral nerve fibres of slow pain others C-fibres. The more ancient slow pain system begins with un-myelinited type C fibres in the skin or other tissues. C fibres are found in the peripheral nerves of the somatic sensory system. The C fibres synapse in the spinal cord, often first with small into neurons then with second order neurons that carry the incoming pain signal to various brainstem nuclei. The signal is then relayed, usually by multiple short neurons, to the thalamus and only indirectly to the cerebral cortex. The recently evolved fast pain system begins with thinly myelinated A â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Delta fibres. These synapse in the spinal cord and the second order neurons ascend through the spinal cord to the thalamus. Third order neurons transfer the information to the cerebral cortex. Visceral pain (i.e. pain from any of the large interior organs) is sensed only by the slow type pain system, pain from the skin can be sent by fast and slow type pain systems. Both slow and fast pain can be sensed without the cerebral cortex, though the cortex clearly plays a role in integrating and modulating various pain signals. Pain is often referred from one area of the body to another. This is due to spinal neurons receiving input
from the viscera and deep musculoskeletal structures and also receiving input from the skin. In addition, tissues with the same embryological origin may input signals to the same places in the spinal cord and inputs from one region often synapse at multiple levels in the spinal cord. Rodeo action hits the Gold Coast Rodeo action is about to return to the Gold Coast in the form of the 2013 Jeep National Finals Rodeo. The prestigious event will again be held inside the Gold Coast Entertainment and Convention Centre at Broadbeach from June 13 to 16. The Jeep National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is the peak event in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) circuit and this year is shaping up to be bigger and better than before. The city will be celebrating for four days as thousands of rodeo fans descend on the Gold Coast for the NFR which is set to showcase all the flair of a mini-Las Vegas event. Australian Professional Rodeo Association president Steve Hilton said there was simply not better location than the Gold Coast to host the NFR. “The city is an attraction of it’s own. While everyone may not be into rodeo everyone is certainly into the Gold Coast,” Steve said. “If you’re going to go and watch any rodeo in the country you would not see a better rodeo. “We have the very best stock in the country and this is certainly the best location as far as facilities go.” There is also a serious competitive side to the rodeo which champion saddle bronc and bull rider Brad Pierce knows only too well. The cowboy from Tooma, NSW has enjoyed a long history with the sport following in the footstep of his father and grandfather. “There will always be people looking at you because your family has done well in the past or you have done well before,” he said. “But at the end of the day this is what I do for a job so if you do it properly and your job right you get the rewards at the end.” Fellow competitor Lachlan O’Neill of Caloundra said there was simply not better place to host the event. “There’s no place like this in the country that you could run a final with the venue and facilities this city has,” Lachlan said. The Jeep Gold Coast National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is the largest indoor rodeo event in Australia and it is the official grand final for the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA).

Each year thousands of hopefuls compete in the 100-plus accredited rodeos that are held across Australia to qualify for the finals. The top 15 cowboys and cowgirls in six events: Bull Riding Saddle Bronc Bareback Bronc Riding Team Roping Steer Wrestling and Ladies Barrel Racing are invited to compete at the NFR. This is not your typical outback rodeo. It has all the flair and extravaganza of the professional rodeos held in Las Vegas and provides city dwellers with a taste of life in the outback but in the comfort and convenience of a modern entertainment centre. In the lead-up to the event the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre is transformed into Australia’s largest indoor rodeo arena, requiring the use of 900 tonnes of dirt and requiring a team of 40 people working 400 man hours to set up the event. During the rodeo, the Convention Centre will house 85 bucking horses, 40 bucking bulls, 80 cattle used for timed events, 80 competition horses, 10 rodeo livestock producers, 50 staff who care for the animals and 15 officials who work within the arena during the rodeo.

Peter was recently observing at a horse school and noticed that as hard as those horses were trying to get it right, there wasn’t one horse expressing more than 15% of their physical potential. Now assessing their physical potential is a fairly nebulous measure but it does give a clue of their ability to perform and also a measure of the owner’s ability to influence the situation. Some of these horses were expressing less than 1% of their physical potential and that was expressed externally by their failure to relax onto the bit, by their high head posture, their head shaking, their inability to collect, their wringing tail under pressure and many more expres-
sions of extreme discomfort. He believes owners owe it to their horses to learn to be more observant and in tune with them. If a horse is not performing the way owners would like or expect, it is generally not because they are rebellious (although this does happen), they either don’t understand the question or it’s causing them considerable discomfort. Acupuncture: An amazing journey By RICHELLE WORMELL The Horse Healer I thought I would write an article about abscesses and the effects acupuncture has on these. But I got to thinking and decided that although many of you are familiar with acupuncture, you might like an answer to the most common question I encounter in my work and how one person came to the conclusion that this would be an effective tool in treating many problems in horses and other animals. Firstly, I’d like to point out horses are great to treat, they respond well, and most of them (unlike many of us) have no preconceived terror when it comes to needles. Secondly, unlike some humans, horses don’t imagine they are feeling better (or worse) from a treatment, their progress is obvious - there is no placebo effect for a horse. I’m going to share with you, my journey that lead me to this point and then answer the most common question I am asked: `How does acupuncture work?’ Why do I believe in acupuncture? I’ll be honest with you, I have been plagued with illness all my life. From six-months-old it started with terrible eczema, with severity few doctors have ever seen. Viral Meningitis at three-yearsold put me in hospital, then an accident at eight left me barely able to walk until my 30s and there were many other problems in between. My parents tried everything, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, musculoskeletal specialists and that was just for my back problems, the list goes on. When I was about 15, eczema moved up on to my face, I didn’t want to leave the house at all and felt even less like a normal 15-year-old than I already did. I tried all the ointments medics would give me. One doctor even suggested iodine, I can’t begin to tell you how much that hurts! As a last resort my mother took me to an acupuncturist at Mt Gravatt. Unfortunately, due to my history as a pin cushion for blood tests and attempted treatments, I was utterly terrified of needles, my

mother literally had to drag me through that door! I met this lovely Chinese fellow in a white doctor’s coat, who seemed to know what he was doing. I took a deep breath and crossed my fingers and toes that I wouldn’t encounter an 18 gauge needle anywhere in the room. I was surprised however, as treatment began, that the needles didn’t hurt, there were far less needles involved than I had thought and certainly nothing that resembled an 18 gauge. Nothing noticeable happened in the weeks to follow and I pretty much forgot about having had any treatment but much to my horror, my mother dragged me through that door for another treatment two weeks later. Only a few days after that second treatment, my face started clearing up. Another week went by and the eczema was gone completely. Two treatments and I never had to go for another treatment for my face again. I thought `could it help rehabilitate the damage I had sustained to my back when I was eight?’ It was worth a shot! This is where things went wrong, at first. We had moved house and I was taken to see another acupuncturist, not the gentleman I had seen for my face but a funny little Chinese woman in the underneath of her home. This was a very different experience. After loading me up with a bag of dried ants and some empty capsules, (I’ll never forget their little legs sticking out between the two parts of the
capsules and me attempting to swallow them) we started an acupuncture treatment. The needles went into my back and my muscles contracted hard. The needles felt as though they were being sucked into my body. I panicked and tried to explain it but she wouldn’t take them out and I couldn’t reach them myself - this put me off acupuncture for a very long time. I went through life on copious amounts of pain killers and antiinflammatories (like many horses do), until I fell pregnant at 30. I was not going to take all these pain killers whilst I was pregnant. I decided to try my luck with another acupuncturist. I opened the Yellow Pages, closed my eyes and just stuck my finger somewhere on the page, rang the number and this is where my love of acupuncture blossomed, this acupuncturist was amazing. We started with the big stuff, and then every little ailment I came up with, he had a treatment for or at least advice how
to manage it long term and over the months to follow, I became a very different person. He undid much of the 30 years of damage that no specialist I had encountered had been able to treat. I can walk properly, my skin has never gone back to the eczema it had, my body for the first time, finally became balanced. So, what has this got to do with horses? My friends and I were always dealing with some ailment or another as one does with high numbers of livestock. Always working toward creating strong immune systems and addressing problems as soon as they arose, I began to wonder if acupuncture worked for me, what could it do for animals very specifically horses. They often have sore backs or manage to turn up lame. I have found acupuncture on horses to be much more effective than I could of imagined… That leads to the question - `how does acupuncture work?’ I am only addressing what happens during needling. There are other aspects to acupuncture, but one thing at a time. I have devised my own explanation - a way that makes it easy for my clients to visualise what happens during and after the treatment. You’ve probably heard this first part before so I’m only going to touch on it lightly because its principle is imperative for understanding the process. Good health is based on balance, the body has to be balanced to be healthy and avoid illness. In Chinese medicine, the entire body is linked by channels we call meridians. These are like pathways running through our bodies connecting organs, muscle and tissue.

The energy in these channels needs to flow properly to keep the body in balance. Think of electricity flowing through a circuit, the circuit needs to be free of interference to allow the current through. If there is a break or damage to the circuit, the circuit simply won’t work, it’s a similar principle in our bodies. When a channel in our body is blocked, this results in pain or illness. So how does needling remove this blockage? When we insert a needle at a particular point, usually multiple needles and points in a treatment, the body subconsciously will focus its attention on that area. If you look at it from another perspective, if we were to have a skin wound, the body focuses its energy and sends its resources to begin healing the wound at its
location. The body does this via the connecting channels we spoke about. So, in acupuncture, the needle creates awareness in the body, the body reacts by stimulating the entire channel that the particular point is on, in turn increasing the flow of energy to not only that location but right throughout the channel. When the energy in the body is flowing properly, it attempts to move any blockage which then disperses and the result is the body heals itself! Acupuncture is based on this belief: create balance and the body heals itself. Effective acupuncture treatment isn’t limited to localised injuries. We can apply the same principle to emotional distress, organ function and down to odd little things like splints. The applications of acupuncture are virtually endless! Whether it be a chronic condi-

Unlocking the stifle By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Lame in the shoulder, sore in the back and lame in the stifle would easily be the most common suggestions made by owners when reporting that their horses are lame. In most case, none of the above are correct. Stifles, although rare, can very definitely, be a source of lameness. Owner's love to blame these areas because they are relatively complicated structures that even if they are the source of pain, rarely, if ever, display any visible or obvious clinical signs. The foot and pastern, would easily account over 90% of the lameness that horses sustain. The foot also, rarely if ever displays obvious signs but for some inexplicable reason, owners love to blame the shoulder, back or stifle. This is why proper clinical examination of a lame horse is essential to properly diagnose the cause of lameness and in most cases, positive confirmation of the source of lameness localising
nerve blocks is essential. The stifle in the horse is the equivalent of the human knee. The joint in the horse is anatomically and structurally very similar to the human joint but functionally is very different. The human knee is a major direct weight bearing structure but the angulation of the joint in the horse serves to remove a lot of the direct load on the joint in that species. Horses have exactly the same structures such as the menisci or cartilages that are such a bane to footballers and other athletes and ligaments such as cruciates but problems in these structures are rare. By far the most common cause of problem in the horse is related to a function of the stifle in that animal that does not occur in other species. The horse has the ability to `lock’ the stifle in position by hooking one of the patella ligaments over a prominently projecting ridge of bone on the bottom of the femur. This is part of the `stay’ apparatus of the horse which allows the horse to sleep while still standing up.

This ensures a horse is always ready to flee from danger as a primary form of defence. In some horses, there is a relative lack of angulation in the stifle, and structurally the medial trochlear ridge of the femur, (the prominent ridge of bone), is larger than normal and it is possible for the patella ligament to become actually locked, the horse is unable to free the ligament, and consequently, the horse cannot bend the limb. The stifle really does become locked. I have actually seen some horses that have been locked for several days in both legs and are unable to move. Fortunately this degree of affliction is rare. The correct name for this condition is `upward fixation of the patella’. In most cases, the locked patella can be relatively easily freed by manipulation but if the condition occurs in a particular horse, then because it is a conformational predisposition, owners can be reasonably concerned as that horse will be prone to reoccurrence. What occurs much more frequently however is a `catching’ patella or partial upward fixation. In these cases, the ligament temporarily becomes caught and then frees itself. This results in a `hitching’ of the leg or more commonly, the horse stumbles on that particular leg. This is a quite common presentation in horses. It is probably more a functional abnormality rather than a truly painful lameness. It can, however, be quite disruptive and deleterious to performance. Specific treatment is difficult. Fortunately the condition can be intermittent and sporadic `self cure’ usually occurs. The onset of partial intermittent fixation is usually related to some form of stress. Loss of weight, over-training and some other primary lameness can often trigger catching of the stifle. The condition is directly related to the muscle tone of the quadriceps muscles which control the
function of the patella. Any factor that causes these muscles to lose their conditioning can result in dysfunction. It is very common for horses to develop locking stifles in the winter when the climate is cold. Particularly, it will show first thing in the morning when the horse first comes out of the stall. The horse very commonly warms up and the lameness disappears. There-in lays the primary key to treatment. Proper conditioning and exercise will almost always result in correction of the problem. There is no proper prescription for exercise. Sufficient to say that trainers should analyse what the horse has been recently doing and make some adjustment. Very often this is over-training and a period of reduction in effort, particularly where stress is placed on the hind legs, is all that is necessary. The correct training term is LSD - long slow distance - and trail riding and such is usually best. The definitive treatment is surgically transecting the medial patella ligament. This is a relatively common procedure but owners of performance horses should obtain very detailed and specific advice before agreeing to cut the patella ligaments of their horse. I personally have performed the operation many hundreds of times and do not believe I have had any permanent problems, but the procedure is very prone to complications and post operative management is critical. There are no effective drug treatments. Some drugs are often attributed success, but remember, I have said many horses self cure and there are many false reports of cures by many modalities but most are simply the condition self correcting. The stifle joint in the horse is also very prone to OCD. This is a developmental disease correctly known as osteochondrosis dissecans where fragments of cartilage may become loose in the joint, or even more seriously in the horse, cysts may develop. These conditions are easily diagnosed by x-ray.

Greasy Heel is a common problem affecting horses By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Greasy Heel would have to be of the most common problems that affect horses. We seem to see it more often during the autumn/winter months, which strongly supports the theory that environmental conditions play a major role in the development of the condition in horses. Skin diseases are very common and a large number of horses are affected. The big three problems, Rain Scald, Greasy Heel, and Mud Fever, are in fact, different presentations of the same disease. All are directly related to persistent wet conditions and can be difficult to prevent. As always, an understanding of how they occur is fundamental in being able to introduce management practices to protect your horse. Obviously the simplest practice is to keep your horse dry. There is nothing wrong with washing your horse, as long as he is able to dry off quickly and the skin returns to normal. The problems occur when the skin remains wet for prolonged periods. The organism that causes the initial development of the above three conditions is known as Dermatophilus. This is a type of bacteria that requires a particular environment to grow and survive. Primarily the requirement is protection from the oxygen and light in the environment. The bug needs to be able to hide somewhere and if the conditions are right, the germ establishes itself, forms colonies, and invades local tissues, in this case, the skin, and causes disease. Rain Scald typically occurs along the back and top-line. Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern and Mud Fever the front of the cannon bones. The different areas have some slightly different characteristics that predispose them to infections. The top-line usually is not a problem in well-conditioned healthy horses. These have nice oily skin and a
very rounded elastic skin contour that water easily runs off. Horses that are debilitated have drier skin and little pockets that can hold moisture and not dry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer. The pasterns, in particular the heels, often have longer hair and a number of grooves and contours that hold water. The front of the cannons obviously shed water easily but the skin is relatively thin and taut in this area. The major culprit that then contributes to development of disease is mud. Obviously the heels are usually covered, and often submerged, in mud. The cannon almost always have mud spattered all over them and the top-line can have mud under different conditions. The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a five star environment for the Dermatophilus organism to invade. The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is a normal environmental organism that lives everywhere. It is not contagious as such, it simply is everywhere. The bacteria invade the moist irritated skin and provoke an even greater inflammatory reaction this causes serum to exude and enables the formation of a scab which now replaces the mud as a cover for the organism. The skin infection can spread very quickly and the typical presentations occur. Rain scald and mud fever typically occur most frequently in the wet summer during periods of prolonged rainfall and hot, humid and muddy conditions. We certainly see Greasy Heel then as well, but there is a much higher incidence, frustratingly in the `betterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; managed horses in stables, at the end of summer as the temperatures fall. This phenomenon has two principal effects. Natural rainfall usually stops, but as the temperatures fall with the air still moist from summer rains, the moisture precipitates as dew and so the grass and environment is in fact quite wet, and because of the reducing temperatures, remains wet for quite long periods.

Often the horses have longer hair as the coat grows in response to the shortening days and so the scene is set for another ideal environment for the organism to thrive. The mornings, in particular, are a lot cooler, the skin becomes a little more brittle and sensitive, small cuts and abrasions occur more easily, and the grass is wet from dew. As always, understanding the causes of any problem offer many managerial decision making processes to help reduce the risk to the horse, and also help a lot in treating the condition. Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibiotic or antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed. It is not resistant to drugs. The difficulty is getting the drugs to contact the organism. Obviously if the bug is hiding under the cover of mud or scab, and the drugs are applied to the surface, they do not come in contact. Similarly injectable or systemic drugs are carried in the blood but if there is no blood supply to the nooks and crannies where the germ is hiding, they are protected from the drugs. The key to treatment is to get rid of the cover. All mud should be washed off the horses legs and body at least twice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Any longer hair should be clipped or removed. Scabs are a lot more difficult. They often are quite painful and there obviously already is infection present, and so the horse resents attempts to remove the scab. This is critical however and measures must be taken to remove the scab. This may require sedation. Bandaging the area with a surgical soap or oil, or lanolin based ointment to soften the scab to aid removal can be very helpful. Once the scab is removed, the organism can be easily killed.
Sometimes there is acute inflammation and irritation to the skin and a topical corticosteroid ointment can help. Greasy Heel often poses a particular extra problem which can make it one of the most difficult diseases of all to treat. The Dermatophilus organism can cause an allergic type reaction in some horses. The correct term is an immune mediated disease. In this situation the body mounts an antibody reaction to the presence of the germ which causes a vasculitis. This means inflammation of the capillaries and blood vessels. The vessels break down and serum leaks into the tissues and the lower legs swell. In particular, the reaction makes the skin extra sensitive to ultra violet light. The condition is far more common and much worse in chestnut and light coloured horses and breeds that have a finer or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up, it will persist even after the organism has long been killed because of the continual reaction to light and the vasculitis in the blood vessels. These horses often require a course of systemic cortisone to control the intense inflammatory reaction occurring in the tissues. Prevention is obviously the best way to control rain related diseases. Our approach at Redlands is to control the inflammation, remove hair, scab, and mud and apply medications. We use a surgical type shampoo that is either iodine or chlorhexidine based to thoroughly clean the area and remove debris, and apply topical medications according to the presentation.

Building horse and rider confidence By LESLEY STEVENSON Confidence is crucial to both horse and rider in the sport of Eventing. If you or your horse don't believe that you can so something, you most likely won't be able to do it, even if you actually are capable. A solid foundation with good basics will go a long way to building confidence levels. Many times horses or riders lack confidence because of a weak link in their basics. It is so very important to find a good instructor who can identify what that weak link is, so that it can be improved. Many riders are pleasantly surprised to find out that they can do something that they didn't think they were capable of, once a good instructor has fixed an underlying problem. For example, I regularly see riders who think that they are just inherently not talented at jumping. They may have been attempting to improve for years, and don't feel that they are getting anywhere. But when I show them how to find their balance independently of the horse in the two point, and they master that skill, they are suddenly much more secure and confident over jumps. Why didn't they already know how to find that balance? Because many instructors teach a particular `position’ instead of balance. In other words, they say things like “shoulders back”, “heels down” and “legs tight”. But without true balance those position corrections will be hard to maintain. Once there is a solid foundation for horse and rider, the way to further build confidence is to put good, positive experiences on top of good, positive experiences. I like to compare experiences to money in the bank. Every great jump or successful shoulder in is like putting a deposit into your account of confidence. Every awkward jump or failed attempt at an exercise is like making a withdrawal. The key to improving your odds is to be organized and methodical in your training, so that you are always setting yourself up for success. Try to recognize when you don't have a great canter, and circle to improve it, rather than going down to that jump anyways. If your horse is a little resistant through the

corner, change your mind and don't attempt a trot lengthening across the diagonal, where he would probably become more resistant. Instead, do a 10 meter circle or two to improve the connection and then attempt a lengthening. If your horse stiffens at the beginning of a downward transition, or hollows at the beginning of an upward transition, don't complete it. Abort - fix the problem, and try again. With diligence, you will be then able to make a good transition, which you can reward, putting money in the bank. A good trainer will know what you are capable of, and may sometimes push you out of your comfort zone, asking you to do something that you would probably not attempt on your own. If you know you have a good trainer, and they know you well, and they tell you that you and your horse are ready to go down and jump that training level ditch and wall and you're shaking in your boots - let go of your apprehension, trust your trainer. When you sail over that jump you will feel like you can take on the world! Many times on cross country, a rider will have a refusal that kind of perplexes them. It may be an easy jump, or one that they have jumped already. And they wonder why their horse stopped at it. Often it's because the jumps preceding that one on the course were not smooth, making withdrawal after withdrawal on the horse's confidence. And when he arrived at the jump that he finally refused at, he was just feeling rather empty on confidence. So to prevent that from happening again, the rider needs to make a mental note on course after a few awkward jumps to ride much more positively forward until there are a few smooth efforts to replace the recent withdrawals. Confidence is the key to success in just about
anything in life and the good news is that confidence levels can be changed. As long as skills are built progressively on a solid foundation for both horse and rider, you will be amazed at what you and your horse can achieve. The Australian Outback Spectacular celebrates 2000 shows The unique Queensland dinner show Australian Outback Spectacular (AOS) has celebrating its 2000th show on the Gold Coast having entertained more than one million people since opening in 2006. Australian Outback Spectacular is a one-ofa-kind $23 million extravaganza which has been wowing audiences by capturing the grandeur of the Australian Outback while highlighting uniquely iconic Australian bush characters. Employing more than 150 people including 25 talented actors, trick riders, stockwomen and men the show celebrates the Spirit Of The Horse with a tribute to Phar Lap. There are 48 horses in the show each night with stage coaches and wagons along with Longhorn Steers, Santa Gertrudis cattle, ponies and working dogs. Adding another layer of show entertainment are the dare-devil riders on quad bikes, the mustering helicopter, the stockmen’s challenge, audience participation and an amazing three course meal – delivered in a stunning visual display of service excellence. AOS General Manager Shane Phillips said he is proud to lead a talented team of local performers undertaking such a spectacular role. “We have our own permanent venue here that resembles the traditional outback shearing shed,” he said. “It perfectly captures the theme of the Australian landscape with its corrugated roof and galvanised railings. It’s a total experience and we have found that younger visitors are loving it just as much as mums and
dads as well as grandparents.” Australian Outback Spectacular features impressive stunt riding with trickriders undertaking daring manoeuvres while roman riders also feature in the show. The legendary story of Phar Lap is also told bringing to life the courageous story of the Australian horse in a highly colourful and memorable display. “The 2000th show was a real milestone for everyone involved and I am proud that many of the stars who performed with us on the opening night are still with us more than seven years later,” he said. The show includes an audio-visual spectacle with real wow factor accompanied by stunning orchestral pieces composed exclusively for the show, as well as music composed and written by country music star Lee Kernaghan and songs performed by the talented cast members. A highlight of the show is built around the competitive spirit of Australians. The audience is split into two groups after receiving free stockmen’s hats stylized from an R.M. Williams hat, whose head-bands depict their respective station. Audience teams barrack and cheer for their stockmen and women to bring home the ultimate prize of top station.

Award recognise equestrian achievements Equestrian Australia has announced the 2012 Sport Achievement Award winners. The highlight of the evening was the Hall of Fame presentation which inducted the 1976 Eventing Team, Olympic gold medal winning horse, Sunburst, show horse champion Vicky Lawrie and Albert ‘Bert’ Jacobs Australia’s first Olympic representative in show jumping. A full list of this year’s inductees is available on Equestrian Australia’s website Hall of Fame page at www.equestrian.org.au The recipients of the 2012 Sport Achievement Awards were: Australian Sports Commission Event of the Year Melbourne International Three Day Event The 2012 Melbourne International Three Day Event was the last chance for domestic eventing athletes to impress national selectors prior to the selection of the London Olympic team. Last year also marked the 55th anniversary of the event which included classes from 1 star to 3 star and a CDI-W dressage class. Gow Gates Official of the Year Gillian Rolton In 2012 Gillian was selected as one of three ground jury judges for the three day event competition at the London Olympic Games and also served as the Chair of the Ground Jury at the World Cup final in Malmo, Sweden. In 2012 Gillian was also appointed to the FEI Eventing committee for the forthcoming four year period. Her role on this committee will include assisting the FEI on the revision of the eventing rules. Gillian also acts as a mentor for technical delegates and course designers to assist them in gaining their qualifications within the EA officiating pathway. Gow Gates Club of the Year Caramut Riding Club In 2012 the Caramut Riding Club ran three major show jumping competitions. The club holds monthly training days for members from May to September. The club conducted the inaugural Hexham Equestrian Centre show jumping competition which is a fundraiser to develop the centre as a premier facility within Western Victoria. Owner of the Year Cheryl O’Brien Cheryl is well-known throughout the Australian Dressage community as the successful operator of Remi Stud which breeds Hanoverian performance horses in Australia. Cheryl’s quiet determination to upgrade the standard of performance horse breeding in Australia to incorporate the high German standards sets her apart. Administrator of the Year Isabel Casey Isabel’s history and involvement in equestri-

an activities spans 25 years, she is currently the State secretary for Show Jumping Tasmania. In the late 1990s, Isabel single handily developed a State Jumping Squad in Tasmania as part of the National High Performance program. Gow Gates Coach of the Year Alison Rowland Alison teaches all levels of riders and adapts her coaching to suit each individual student and horse. An EA Level 1 Coach, Alison aspires to see her students perform their personal best. In what was only their second World Cup class, pupil Sarah Isbister and Little Britton placed fifth in the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand Final. Gow Gates Volunteer of the Year Marj England Marj has been volunteering at equestrian events since 1986 including the Melbourne International Three Day Event, Dressage and Jumping with the Stars and the state dressage championships. Marj has pencilled, assisted judges, gear checked and acted as a steward at countless events. Young Athlete of the Year Tom McDermott This is the third consecutive year Tom McDermott has been named the Equestrian Australia Young Athlete of the year. Tom was awarded the FEI’s Rising Star of 2012, an accolade which is awarded to a young rider between the age of 14-21. The gifted young athlete received the award ahead of other top young riders from around the world. As well as being crowned the 2012 Australian Senior Show Jumping Champion, the teenager from the NSW also won the Young Rider's title. Horsezone Domestic Horse of the Year Bickley Brook Bella Bickley Brook Bella is a 10-year-old mare owned by Nicol Taylor, Peter Cooke and
Alison Rowland. In just her first season competing at World Cup level, Bickley Brook Bella won four World Cup qualifiers including Sydney, Adelaide, Sale and the ‘Be the Influence’ Equestrian Grand Final. After an impressive season Bickley Brook Bella took out the Golden Grand award for the leading horse in the 2012 World Cup Jumping series. IRT International Horse of the Year Boyd Exell’s four in hand team (Carrington Park, Ajax, Lucky, Banjo, Bill and Spitfire) Boyd’s indoor four in hand team continue to excel at the highest level in Carriage driving and in 2012 Boyd and his team entered the history books by winning the FEI World Cup Driving Final for the fourth consecutive time. The team also won at Stuttgart, Geneva, London Olympia and Mechelen. Domestic Athlete of the Year Maree Tomkinson Maree started 2012 with a win at Dressage with the Stars; this was her 11-year-old mare Diamantina’s first Grand Prix Freestyle competition. Maree and Diamantina continued their success by winning the Sydney CDI and in October the duo were crowned the 2012 Australian Dressage Champions. To round off the year Maree gained second place at the Pacific League World Cup Dressage Final. International Athlete of the Year Joann Formosa With her gold medal win at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in the Grade 1b individual test, Joann (pictured) is only the second Australian to win a Paralympic gold medal in Equestrian. On her way to victory, Joann and her mount, 17-year-old stallion Worldwide PB also dethroned the world’s most successful Para-Equestrian rider to-date, Lee Pearson of Great Britain.

EKKA ISSUES HENDRA ADVISORY The RNA is adopting Australian best-practice in the fight against Hendra virus, with all horses attending or competing at 2013 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) requiring mandatory Hendra virus vaccination. The new Hendra virus vaccine safeguards the health and wellbeing of horses and their owners/handlers by breaking the cycle of transmission from flying foxes to horses and also from horses to humans. The RNA's primary consideration is the health and safety of all people and animals at the event. While the risk of contracting Hendra virus is extremely low, RNA officials have made the decision to introduce mandatory Hendra virus vaccinations as it is the best available preventative measure to mitigate the potential risks of this deadly virus. They have worked closely with Biosecurity Queensland and experienced biosecurity veterinarians to review and update the RNA's Biosecurity Plan. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) supports the RNA's decision to make vaccinations mandatory with the aim of protecting horses and humans. The AVA's President Ben Gardiner said the research has demonstrated the vaccine is highly effective in preventing disease in horses and stopping the transmission of the Hendra virus. “The vaccine is the most effective tool available in the fight against Hendra virus and the AVA strongly recommends that all horses in Australia are vaccinated to protect them and to protect humans from this potentially fatal virus," he said. The vaccine is administered by accredited veterinarians in an initial course of two injections. The RNA's additional biosecurity measures to mitigate risks of Hendra virus include: comprehensive stable cleaning and disinfecting measures plywood and plastic barriers between stables restricting public access to horses ensuring the areas under fig trees are thoroughly cleaned early each morning limiting the feeding and watering of horses to their stables. Exhibitors interested in entering the 2013 Royal Queensland Show's Horse Competition are encouraged to talk with their veterinarian about the vaccination process to ensure that they are fully informed. RNA officials believe mandatory vaccinations for Hendra virus and the additional biosecurity measures outlined above will ensure the highest standard of protection for the show's horse competitors and exhibitors. The forst sale will be held on 13th July 2013 The auction will consist of new and second hand horse-related gear including saddles, non-ridden and ridden horses. There will be a web site and Facebook page where all the horses and gear will be available for perusal, as well as a catalog lift out in The Horse Report with photos and info about the each horse that is offered for sale. The vendor will have choice to work a horse with a cow in the selling ring, or if the horse offered for sale is show-jumper, they would be give an opportunity to use jumps to show off horse’s jumping ability or barrels, pole bending for a sporting horse etc. A horse re-educating and educating service is also available to vendors so that the horses are well-educated and well-presented to attract best possible price on the day. The Pam Bell Challenge is always popular and the hacks and ponies are always well represented in Boonah. An excellent jumping program is a highlight of the day and we must not forget that Boonah is the home of the Clydesdale horse and the decendants of some of these original breeders can still be seen at Boonah showing these beautiful animals. MALENY SHOW The Maleny Agricultural Show will be held on May 31 and June 1. This will be the 76th show and, as usual, will be bigger, brighter and better than last year. The program will include Breed Classes and local events on Friday. Saturdays program will include Show Hunters commencing at 8am, hacks, galloways and pony hacks, miniatures and harness as well as a full jumping program for both junior and senior. Some of the major awards on offer are the Supreme champion all breeds of show, Supreme champion local horse under saddle, Supreme champion horse under saddle, Supreme Show Hunter and much much more. The Horse Report Jondaryan Woolshed salutes Australian country heritage The Australian Heritage Festival will be held at Jondaryan over the weekend of May 5-6. Everything from working farm machinery to sheep shearing, stalls, miniature trains, grand parade, great food, night time activities, to a fully licensed bar with a traditional flavour of the bush. The Australian Heritage Festival is a celebration and demonstration of the pioneering and agricultural history from the 1890s. This is a heritage weekend, reenacting daily events from a bygone era and provides a fascinating insight for young and old and is the perfect family day out or weekend away. It combines fun with education (though don’t tell the kids!) The Australian Heritage Festival has been a major annual event at The Woolshed at Jondaryan for over 30 years. A new component and display for 2013 will be the celebration of different transport methods through the eras – from people and animal power through to
steam, bicycle’s and motor cars. And don’t forget the daily grand parade. Demonstrations of long forgotten skills such as leather work, blacksmithing, wool crafts, wood carving and turning, draught horse handling, milking and butter churning, whip making and cracking, school’s in and much more! Kids’ old time activities like Sack races, apple bobbing, gumboot throwing, billy carts, and billy boiling are just a few of the fun activities available over the weekend. Accommodation, camping and catering available onsite. But even if you can’t make it out to the Jondaryan Woolshed this weekend, the facility provides a look back in time all year round with activities and events. bit for Careflight The 2013 Careflight charity Heavy Horse Demonstration is on again! On Sunday, May 5 come and see fantastic working and static displays of horse drawn equipment and heritage working displays of a local blacksmith, wheelwrighting, haymaking, chaffmaking and corn shelling, just to name a few. Sample traditional stew along with damper and tea. Local arts and crafts stalls and
food stalls will also be running throughout the day. Part of the proceeds from the day go to CareFlight. The Heavy Horse Day will be held at Mick Bradford’s property at 122 Swanfels Road, Yangan, just 15 minutes from Warwick. The annual event starts at 9am.
