The Queensland Government has launched an inquiry into possible side effects of Hendra vaccination and the consequence of vets not treating unvaccinated horses.
Hendra vaccination inquiry launched The Queensland Government has responded to concerns by some horse owners as to possible side effects of the Hendra vaccine by launching an inquiry into its use. The inquiry will also examine the consequence of vets not treating unvaccinated horses. The Hendra vaccine was codeveloped by US drug manufacturer Zoetis, also known as Pfizer, and the CSIRO after more than a decade of research. It has been on the market since 2012 but was only formally registered by the federal regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), in August this year. A Queensland parliamentary committee would look at the incidence and impact of adverse reactions by horses following vaccination and the impacts on the industry and economy from vets applying a policy not to treat unvaccinated horses. The Agriculture and Environment Committee will take public submissions and report back by August 22. However veterinarian Dr Richard L'Estrange, from animal health company Zoetis, defended the vaccine and said the science behind it was solid. "I have personally examined every adverse event report received by Zoetis," he said. At the time of registration the APVMA published the adverse reaction reporting figures which showed a minute rate of adverse side effects of just 0.001 percent. Dr L'Estrange said it was the
most scrutinised equine vaccine in Australian history. Since 1994 the Hendra virus has caused the death of more than 70 horses across Queensland and NSW. In the Hunter Valley, vets are reporting a drop off in the number of people getting their horses vaccinated for Hendra virus. Maitland vet Ian Gollan said that many people are being put off by social media posts claiming the vaccine hurts horses. "There has been a discernible decrease in the number of people who are electing to vaccinate their horses," he said. "Some of them, quite frankly, have mentioned the publicity of the vaccine, suggesting at best the vaccine doesn't work and at worst damages their horses. "We have no evidence of that, and I have not personally seen any horse that has suffered badly from being vaccinated for Hendra Virus." Equestrian Australia has a bylaw outlining the Hendra vaccination requirements for horses which attend EA and FEI sanctioned events in Australia. The by-law makes it a requirement for organising committees of EA and FEI events to complete a questionnaire during initial planning stages to determine if their event requires classification as a Hendra Vaccinated Event (HVE). Events graded as a HVE within NSW and Queensland, which the by-law defines as the endemic region, will require all attending horses to be Hendra Vaccinated.

Kilkivan offers new Ride activities The new management team of the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Association is reinvigorating the Queensland town's iconic equine event as both a participant and spectator event. The team is hoping for a large turnout of both visitors and locals on the first Saturday in April to witness a truly unique event. Secretary Rosie Fitzgerald said the diverse program of activities in the main street this year from 11am on Saturday, April 2 will keep non-riders fully engaged. "We kick it off with a Black Powder shooting demo at the Kilkivan Rifle Range, which is at the end of the main street,” she said. “We also have a petting zoo, line dancing social, pony rides, live music, dog retrieving demonstrations, whip cracking, stalls, a photographic and rustic sculpture competition, a display of vintage Land Rovers and much more. “I'm sure everyone can really enjoy the day as they await the Grand Parade of horses, riders and carriages along main street." Participants in the famous ride have an exciting option this year

The highlight of the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride is the Grand Parade along the main street
- a two-day trail from Manumbar Showgrounds along the Bicentennial National Trail to Kilkivan. Starting on April 1, this Manumbar Gold Run Trail will cover 60 impressive kilometres of the BNT and participants and their mounts will camp the night in the hills high above Kilkivan. On the second day they will ride past the restored Mt Clara copper smelting chimney and the site of the first Kilkivan township, established when gold fever was raging through the expanding population in the 19th century. Numbers on this trail are capped, due to the logistical challenges presented by the trail. The other two one-day trails are
shorter but also offer variations on previous years' trails. The Woolooga - Homer's Gate Trail is suitable for both horsedrawn carriages and horses and riders, while the Kilkivan Mactaggart Trail is suitable for those wanting both the convenience of starting and finishing in Kilkivan and a shorter option. President of Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Association Dave Golding and Trail Coordinator Vern Berry have designed interesting trails which will take participants off-road as much as possible to give them a unique experience of the beautiful Kilkivan area. However, they are keen to impress on participants the need to select a trail appropriate to
the experience and fitness of both the horse and rider. "Some young kids are participating for the first time and are not ready for a full day in the saddle; and some horses can't manage a 30 kilometre ride either!" Mr Golding said. The highlight will be the Grand Parade at 4pm on Saturday afternoon when riders from all three trails converge on the town’s main street. Saturday evening will see all the action return to the Kilkivan Showgrounds with the free Tom Grady Campfire Concert featuring Muddy Flats kicking off at 6.30pm and there'll be an interval from 7.30pm for the First Annual Billy Boiling Competition. Sunday morning will get cracking with a Bush Poet's Breakfast at the Showgrounds, featuring at least five bush poets. A hotly-contested team penning competition then gets under way, as well as Kilkivan Pony Club-hosted horse novelties, and fun foot novelties! Growth rings can serve as indicators of health Lots of people like to keep a diary, a record of events that happen or they encounter. In earlier times, this was a meticulous endeavour whereby conscientious people diligently recorded things in a hand written tome. Well, surprise surprise, the horse has been automatically keeping a very accurate diary of life events for hundreds of years, and what’s more, has been putting it on public display so that all can see what has been happening. Growth rings, (Fever rings or Founder rings), on the horse’s hoof capsule, are feared by many owners and many a horse has been discredited or downgraded because of the presence of visible rings on the hoof capsule. Yes, they can be indicators of a potentially serious underlying problem, however, in well over 90% of the time, they are merely harmless indicators of some event in the horse’s history. The hoof capsule is a very real, living tissue. Every minute of every day, new hoof wall, or horn, is being produced. The new tissue pushes the previous growth down the wall towards the ground surface. Although the hoof capsule is rela-

Once the wall reaches the ground surface, under natural conditions the old wall is worn off as the horse traversed the countryside in daily search of food and water. Domestication has circumvented this natural exercise cycle, interrupted the normal wear, and led to a plethora of abnormal disease conditions of the hoof, but that is another story. Changes in weather, changes in management such as new owners, moving from one property to another, changes in diet or work pattern, all are capable of inducing changes in the blood supply to the horse’s foot. Very many people notice rings on the horse’s feet and immediately say that the horse is foundered. Yes, laminitis will cause growth rings, just the same as any other condition that causes inflammation. Laminitis is inflammation in the feet, but any other disease or body condition can also cause increased circulation. A bout of colic, digestive disturbance, respiratory virus, and the list is endless, are all just as likely to induce growth rings in the feet. These “one off” circumstances usually result in a single, very prominent ring in otherwise normal feet, usually occurring on all four feet at the same time. They certainly point to a reasonably dramatic change to the horse, as compared to the multiple rings seen on the “poorer” quality hooves. What is probably more important than the presence of rings, is the nature and character of the rings, In particular there evenness. Horses with chronic laminitis, and many horses with club feet, show diverging rings. Here the distance between the rings at the toe and the heels are very different. The rings are very close together at the toe, and much wider apart at the heel. This indicates serious mechanical pressure from the “rotated” extensor process of the pedal bone pushing on the back of the coronet and restricting the blood supply. Growth at the heels is normal and unimpeded, so much so that the heels can sometimes grow so quickly that the horse ends up with the so called “Persian slipper” foot of chronic laminitis. Diverging growth rings are a very serious sign and indicate something wrong with the horse. Every bit as serious is the reverse situation where the horse has a negative palmer angle of the pedal bone. In this case, the heels are bearing extra weight, are being crushed, and have reduced blood supply. In this circumstance, the toe wall grows normally and the heel wall is stunted. So in summary, by far the majority of so called “fever” rings on the horses’ hoof are relatively innocuous and simply reflect some circumstance, singular stress, or change in the normal pattern of the horse. Some growth rings are in fact very serious but these can usually be detected by a lack of uniformity or some unusual characteristics.

relates to the growth and production of the hoof wall at the coronet, and this in turn is directly related to the coronary blood supply. Changes or alterations in the quality and volume of blood circulating through the coronary tissue, has a marked effect on the quality and appearance of the hoof wall. The foot of the horse is in reality quite small, particularly when related to the enormous body weight of the horse that the tiny foot has to support. There is a normal cycle of compression and expansion as the horse moves, relative to the load on the foot during stance. The outer hoof wall is relatively hard and strong and allows little expansion to allow blood to flow. Any imbalances or unevenness in the distribution of the load applied to the foot is going to have a marked effect on the quality of the flow. Any reduction in the volume or quality of the blood supply is going to have a very deleterious effect horny hoof wall produced. Most horses with dry shelly feet, cracks, thin soles, and poor feet in general, can relate directly to the quality of the blood supply. Most owners rush immediately to dietary supplements because they believe the horse is “lacking” something. Yes, they are correct, but what they are lacking is circulation, not some vitamin or supplement. Domestication of the horse in many circumstances, means horses are restricted to relatively small yards, paddocks, or stalls, and they spend a lot of time standing around, moving little. All the time they are not moving, the weight is on the hoof and circulation is impaired. Exercise can be the best supplement to help the horse’s feet, particularly if combined with proper examination, radiographs, and shoeing. Such horses are going to have irregular and varying intermittent periods of exercise, and consequently circulation, and these horses are all going to have different qualities of new hoof wall production. This shows up on the outside of the hoof as a variation in the pattern of growth and is seen as rings on the hoof reflecting different stages in the production cycle of the horn. These irregular patterns of blood supply, and hence growth, are very common. Any single factor that causes some alteration in the horses’ life pattern, can induce these growth rings, and so in by far the majority of circumstances, all that they mean is that there has been some alteration in the horse’s circulation.

When changing your horse’s diet, it is best done over a extended period of time.
very basic natural diet and all you are doing is increasing the same feed then the number of days taken to do so will not be very long. However if you are changing your horse from a diet that is complex to one that is quite simple then this change will require a lengthy time. Making changes slowly will ensure that your horse will not experience digestive upsets. The horse’s digestive system requires a certain amount of time to adjust to diet changes. Researchers discovered that by adding fat rapidly to a horse’s diet can affect the faeces of the horse by making it slimy. However when the fat was added slowly this problem was reduced. The following recommendations will help you to determine how will you will lower or increase your feed. It has been suggested that when you are increasing the grain in a horse’s diet this should be done in small increment amounts of approximately 230 g per day.
It is also important to be aware that feeding a high starch diet will also have an effect on how you will make these changes. This is a broad view as this amount of grain will depend entirely on what you are currently feeding your horse. It is also dependent on what you are trying to achieve, are you try to increase energy because your horse’s workload has increased or are you simply trying to increase energy because your horse is lazy? Either way part of this process is a little bit experimental. But the most important thing to remember is time; take time to make any change in your feed regime. If you are changing from one particular type of grain to another, say from oats to steamed and rolled barley this should also be done slowly, generally if you replace approximately 25% of the current horses diet with your horses new diet every second or third day this would be an ideal change over.

If it is necessary to alter your horse’s diet at any time, this should not be done suddenly. By making changes slowly will reduce the risk of digestive upsets such as diarrhoea or more serious conditions such as colic. There may be a change in weather conditions and this can include moving into the colder months which is what we are experiencing right now. Temperatures in Victoria, which is where we live, have dropped to less than 9° overnight, we have seen a change in our horses’ coats and there is now a need to consider increasing the warmth during the night. There can often be a direct link to dietary changes and health conditions; this can include laminitis and possibly colic so making changes to your feed regime must be done over a period of time to ensure that there is no negative effect. Recommendations for feed nutritional requirements for horses have often been supplied by the National Research Council’s nutrient requirements for horse’s publication. However these recommendations generally do not take into consideration each horses biochemical uniqueness. It is my preference to use recommended optimal allowances for horses this gives us the opportunity to make changes according to each horse’s individual requirements. Making changes to feed include alterations to grain, hay, pasture and vitamin and mineral intake. The horse has a very unique digestive system - it is a very complicated system and extremely sensitive in particular to changes in diet. It is therefore necessary to make feed changes over at least four to seven days. Making these changes over a number of days will also depend on the type of feed that is currently being fed and how drastic the change is. For example if your horse is currently on a

If you are reducing your grain, it is a similar process only the other way round, reducing the amount of grain by approximately 230 g per day. With hays, once again it is really important to make your changes slowly. If you are changing from one type of hay to another, then I recommend that you replace approximately 20 to 25% with the new hay every two to three days. This will ensure the transition is done slowly and will reduce the risk of digestive upsets. There are many different types of hays they can be fed to horses this can include alfalfa, cereal hays, rye hays, clover hays, native pasture hays, barley straw etc. The quality of hay is also variable, so choosing hays is very important because the nutritional content will alter quite dramatically. By simply smelling the hay is an ideal way, if it smells sweet and fresh then chances are it will be good quality. Hays such as alfalfa and oaten will be of a higher nutritional value, some horses simply do not require hays of this quality in particular those who are
prone to laminitis. However, horses are perpetual grazers and they require a high percentage of roughage in their diet for their digestive system to function normally. I cannot stress this enough. I have noticed around the world that in many cases horses are not being fed sufficient roughage. Horses that are boxed will suffer if we do not provide them with sufficient hays during the day and night. In Australia we are quite fortunate in that our horses can live a normal lifestyle and this includes grazing. But we have suffered quite severe droughts for a number of years, in many parts of Australia it is far more severe than others so we must find ways to compensate and good quality hays can be an excellent replacement. For horses that are being stabled and then turned out during the day, it is highly recommended if the pasture is quite lush that horses be turned out on a full stomach, this can reduce the horse’s grass intake and possibly assist with potential digestive issues. f your horse is being moved to a new property and the pasture is

quite different from the previous property then it is recommended to limit the horses time grazing for a number of days to ensure that the horse can become accustomed to the new pasture. There are other issues relating to poor pasture in drought areas, horses on poor pasture run the risk of ingesting bacteria, dirt and other foreign bodies this can cause stress to the digestive system. I always recommend for these situations to use a good pro and prebiotic such as Bioequus this will reduce the risk of diarrhoea, ulcers and possibly even colic. There is no guarantee but it will certainly help. If you own a young growing horse naturally the horse’s dietary needs will change progressively so it is important to
contact an expert who can provide the correct advice. Young growing horses require a different approach in many ways to feeding. It is important to get this right because if the horse is not provided the correct nutrient intake as a youngster he will not develop normally. So just to recap, please make sure you make your feed changes over a period of time somewhere between two to seven days and even longer if necessary if the feed changes are quite dramatic. Are you Helping or Hindering your Riding Skills ? By Tanja Kraus We all do 'ground work' when it comes to our horses - some of us more than others. Even if we don't do 'ground work', we are doing 'ground work' each and every time we interact with our horse. As soon as you put a halter on your horse - you are either adding benefit to your ridden training, or you are taking away from it. Those that have done clinics with me will remember me calling the lead rope 'the rein'. Thats because each time we put some kind of feel in the lead rope - we are teaching our horse to respond to our hand, or our rein when we are riding. Some may argue that 'its different' because it is a lead rope vs the rein, but I can tell you - your horse doesn't know the difference. As far as he is concerned, he feels some kind of cue on his face, and he responds to it either way. Of course as we head into advancing horsemanship territory we can refine these cues to compliment our training. Back to the article. When I am holding my horse to get his feet done, if I allow him to lay into my hand, or pull into the rein to sniff the farrier, or look around, Im teaching him that he can lay into my hand then when he does it under saddle, I wonder why. Lets take it to the next level - when I am actually doing ground work. Lets say I have a set of skills that I take my horse though - are they relevant to riding ? When I lay my hand on my horse to ask for a hindquarter yield am I replicating where my leg would be to ask, and what it would feel like ? Or am I pushing on the hip ? Do I tickle my horse to move (my leg won't be tickling). We can refine our ground skills or in hand work to such an extend that our horse is quite clear on the leg aids - before I even get in the saddle. Add to your training - don't take from it.

What’s Happening TAROOM FAST HORSES The Taroom Fast Horses Barrel race and sprint races will be held over the weekend of March 12 and 13 to coincide with Queensland Womens Week and organisers are hoping to gather people from rural & remote areas to enjoy a weekend of fun horse sports. The major events include a 4D barrel race, pole bending and 200m individual sprint with lots of prizes to offer including the beautiful Hawkesbury River saddle for the sprint. Trophy rugs, trophy buckles and jewellery prizes will be presented for best presented lady and junior girl. Service fees to stallions, saddle bags, handcrafted boots and other horse equipment will also be up for grabs. On Friday night there is a free sausage sizzle and jumping castle for the kids. Saturday afternoon will be full of entertainment with the 200m sprint and sponsors cup final. The top 10 fastest horses from the heats will have a chance to race again competing for the saddle. The fastest horse of the final will also become the winner for the sponsors cup and the lucky sponsor will get to take home the 2016 Taroom Fast Horses Sponsors Cup Trophy a beautiful award valued over $100. The barrel race is run in conjunction with the Queensland Barrel Racing Association and prizes on offer include a beautiful trophy saddle a $1650 service fee to an imported barrel racing champion, Seductive Fame with prizemoney and lots of other prizes. Magali’s lessons in riding are about bringing out the best in rider and horse and are suitable for all riding disciplines. There will be two people in each riding lesson and they will run for one hour. This is important to Magali as it allows you breathing space to try what she is asking you to do before she works with you again. Spectators will be free to move from one end of the arena to the other to take in what is being explained and demonstrated. Limited places are available for those wishing to have Riding in Harmony lessons (but be quick). On the second day, horses will have alternate lessons and spectators will be able to witness the progress first hand. The same format - Friday evening with the duo followed by a two day weekend clinic will be held in Sydney on April 8 - 10 at a venue to be confirmed. The Brisbane clinic on April 7 will be only a one day event at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture from 9am to 5pm. Frédéric will take participants on a journey in understanding how owners need to think to create a happy, trusting and inspired horse for liberty work. There are only six lessons available with Frédéric. Each lesson will be directed by what Frédéric uncovers with the horse. It’s important in these lessons to let go of expectation, to open your mind and absorb what Frédéric will share with you about

Doomben racecourse hosts Triequithon The Doomben Racecourse will be the home to a unique eventing event when it hosts the The Magic Millions Triequithon on April 2. Queensland’s leading eventing riders battle it out for a prize pool of $10,000 in a competition which aims to show the versatility of thoroughbreds. Managing Director of Magic Millions Vin Cox said thoroughbreds are such a versatile horse and the Triequithon was a great chance to showcase how well they can perform in sports after racing. “As eventing consists of the three disciplines of dressage, show jumping and cross country, it is the ideal way to demonstrate just how trainable and athletic the thoroughbred is,” he said. “When Zara Philips was here during the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales, we were delighted to see the interest she showed in the Australian

We are very excited to be supporting another equestrian event in Queensland.” Equestrian Queensland is also excited to have the Triequithon, a shortened format of the Olympic sport of Eventing, come to Doomben. Equestrian Queensland Chair David Finch said this new competition would also highlight the discipline and local riders as well. “Australia has won more Gold medals than any other country since we entered the Olympic sport of Eventing,” David said. “It is one of those equestrian sports where you can get to the top with a horse off the track and a lot of hard work and will power.”
With 12 of Queensland’s top eventers competing, a full day of racing and the inaugural Superhero Saturday Raceday supported by the Starlight Children’s Foundation happening on April 2 , it is bound to be a highlight for families, equestrians and the racing audience. General Manager Brisbane Racing Katie Churchill believes the event will make a big day even bigger. “The ability to add the dimension of thoroughbreds looking so magnificent in the equestrian arena, along with the family entertainment and racing will make Superhero Saturday Raceday even better,” she said. “When you think about it, the equestrians who are striving to represent Australia in this Olympic sport are superheroes in their own right.”
The Triequithon will be held on the St Ledger Lawn to the right of the grandstands which will give great access to the public. The dressage phase will commence immediately following Race 1, with the thrilling cross country phase starting straight after Race 3 and the all-important show jumping will begin after Race 6. “Having watched the Triequithon in Melbourne in August, we just knew we needed to bring it up to Doomben.” said the wife of Queensland’s leading metropolitan trainer, Jane Gollan. “It was so magnificent watching my favourite horses compete and perform in my favourite sports of racing and eventing. “I was determined to have the racing community realise how wonderful the equestrian sports are and equally determined to have the equestrian community enjoy a great day at the races.” For more information about tickets go to www.brc.com.au/brc/racedayhospitality-packages/

Horses react to angry faces What horse owners have known for years, that horses were able to distinguish between angry and happy human facial expressions, has been confirmed by a UK university study. Psychologists at the University of Sussex, studied how 28 horses reacted to seeing photographs of positive versus negative human facial expressions. When viewing angry faces, horses looked more with their left eye, a behaviour associated with perceiving negative stimuli. Their heart rate also increased more quickly and they showed more stress-related behaviours. The study concluded that this response indicates that the horses had a functionally relevant understanding of the angry faces they were seeing. A tendency for viewing negative human facial expressions with the left eye specifically has also
been documented in dogs. Professor Karen McComb, a colead author of the research, said there were several possible explanations for the findings. “Horses may have adapted an ancestral ability for reading emotional cues in other horses to respond appropriately to human facial expressions during their co-evolution,” he said. Alternatively, individual horses may have learned to interpret human expressions during their own lifetime.” The horses were recruited from five riding or livery stables in Sussex and Surrey, UK, between April 2014 and February 2015. They were shown happy and angry photographs of two unfamiliar male faces. The experimental tests examined the horses’ spontaneous reactions to the photos. Source: University of Sussex
