Queensland racing gains $6m funding boost The Queensland Budget will fund a $6 million Country and Regional Capital Works Program with spending across all three racing codes from all regions across the State. Racing Minister Grace Grace said the package included $4.4 million allocated to address infrastructure needs raised through a submission process which invited race clubs to bid for funds. Ms Grace said Racing Queensland (RQ) also identified a further $1.6 million of projects through an extensive review process, with a total of 113 clubs benefiting. “I am pleased to be able to approve this funding program which will begin to address infrastructure requirements immediately with phase one to be completed within 18 months,” Ms Grace said. “Our clubs in country and regional areas are a key part of their local economies while also providing a strong social connection. They need to be supported and I know these projects will make a difference.” Ms Grace said each submission was assessed for its ability to improve racing operations, enhance industry returns and deliver better workplace health and safety and animal welfare outcomes. Each racing region will benefit from this new funding, with projects including: Recycled and water harvesting projects in Mackay and Rockhampton; Transportable Starting Barriers to be shared between a number of thoroughbred clubs in the Central West and Downs country regions; Upgrades and replacement of racing infrastructure including stewards' towers, run-

ning rails, barrier stalls and starting boxes at code tracks located across the regions; Animal welfare equipment and amenities upgrades across the codes and regions; and Track surface upgrades across the codes and the regions. Racing Queensland CEO Dr Eliot Forbes said the Country and Regional Capital Works Program was for projects under $1 million with a separate process for those over that amount. "The process was detailed and collaborative to ensure fairness and a level playing field for all involved,” Dr Forbes said “Racing facilities were visited across the state with interviews conducted and venue assessment reports produced. “We also consulted with industry stakeholders regarding club and industry infrastructure requirements as well as conducting analysis of previous club infrastructure investment to identify trends.” RQ received 159 project requests of less than $1 million. Of those, 90 have been provisionally approved as priority projects. In addition, RQ determined another 40 projects have merit however they did not meet the animal welfare or workplace safety requirement or require further work before being assessed. Following Ministerial approval of the package, RQ will undertake due diligence before proceeding with project implementation. RQ will project manage the infrastructure upgrades to ensure efficiencies of cost and scale while also maintaining regular reporting of project stages. The fund includes a contingency amount of $500,000.

Betting on the beach The Mackay Airport Beach Horse Races, Australia's most unique Horse Racing Event has been acquired by Purple Betty Productions and will be Under New Management from 2017. This means big changes for the event and the way the races are structured. The most important change will be Racing Queensland's presence on the day to review the track and the program that now incorporates Ex-thoroughbred race horses. The amount of Races has decreased slightly from previous years so the horses can be paraded and form can be established. There will be Clydesdales Red Coats and there will also be Pony Rides for the littlies. "We will aim to add more races back in from 2018, however for our first year we wanted to ensure that all the changes would run efficiently" Event Manager Sarah Annett said "We are very excited to show the horse community how committed we are to improving the Event and looking after them on the day". The August 19 race day will include; Quarter Horse, ExThoroughbred, All Breeds, Youth Only (12-17) and Mixed Breed. Race nominations are only $100 with prize money totalling over $9,000. Managing Metabolic Syndrome, Cushing’s & Laminitis By CATHERINE MCDOWELL Equine Cushing's disease ( also known as Pars Pituitary Intermedia Dysfunction or PPID) is caused by a tumour in the pituitary gland, which is responsible for the production and regulation of hormones. While the tumour itself is benign, the cells within the tumour produce excess hormones, creating an imbalance in the horse's endocrine system. Dysfunction of the pars media results in the increased levels of several hormones including the ACTH (adrenocorticotropin) which is the stimulator for the adrenal hormone cortisol. Cushing's disease is most common in horses over 20, although it has been known to occur in horses as young as seven-years-old. It is equally prevalent in both genders and is found more often in Morgans than in any other breed. Ponies may also have a slightly higher predisposition. The most notable symptom of Cushing's disease is the growth of a long, shaggy, coat of hair. This irregularly long and sometimes coarse wavy hair often persists throughout summer months and is a critical signal that a horse may have Cushing's disease. This may be accompanied by sweating and flaking of skin. Other symptoms are caused by the hormonal imbalance in the adrenal gland. These symptoms include excessive drinking, an affected horse may drink as much as 80 litres of water a day (as opposed to an average 20 - 30 litres), and urination, laminitis, a tendency for recurring infections in the hoof . There may be a development of a swayback stance and a pot belly along with increased appetite usually with no accompanying weight gain. A filling above the eyes caused by the deposition of fat, normally, you can see a depression above the horse's eye. The immune system becomes compromised which gives rise to a host of conditions/diseases which are often passed off as old age. These include respiratory disease, skin infections, abscesses of the foot, mouth ulcers, and periodontal disease. Overall there is a depressed, sick-looking appearance with dull eyes and drab coat. The link between Cushing’s Disease and laminitis is not fully understood, however, it is considered that the high levels of circulation cortisol and cortisol like hormones play a major role in the development of Laminitis, as it may with the metabolic syndrome known as insulin resistance. Equine Metabolic Syndrome Insulin resistance is the reduction in the horse’s ability to respond appropriately to the hormone

Excessively long hair coat in old horse with Cushing’s Syndrome

Laminitis is a crippling condition which can be fatal in severe cases.

Insulin. Insulin is a hormone which plays a key role in the regulation of blood glucose levels. In addition to its role in controlling blood sugar levels, insulin is also involved in the storage of fat. Ponies or horses that are “good doers” are examples of this, carrying heavy thick crests and fatty deposits over the body. High levels of adipose tissue cause systemic inflammatory process which create neuro-endocrine feedback loops that perpetuate the metabolic imbalance. Processed feeds and unnatural living conditions are the reason behind the increase in this syndrome.

Burdock, Red Clover, Garlic, and Fenugreek are what I commonly use •Neuro-endocrine support - Combinations of herbs that support the Hypothalamus , Thyroid and Adrenal axis are used to ensure balance. Even though the pituitary is the problem in Cushing’s, supporting the master gland is essential when balancing the endocrine system, in particular the hypothalumus. Nourishing the nerve plexus associated with the endocrine system is also advised. Nervous system herbs include: Withania, Borage, Blue Flag, Phytolacca, Chamomile, Chaste Tree and Mugwort •Supporting the Metabolic Partners – making sure that the liver and kidneys are functioning well is simply common sense. Herbs that can be fed regularly: Dandelion, St Marys Thistle, Buchu and Rosehips

Herbs to restore metabolic harmony and balance the endocrine system. When reading conventional literature on Cushing’s and Metabolic syndrome, one is led to believe that there is very little one can do. At best you are treating the symptoms, and at worst you are adding to underlying causal factors. From a herbalist’s perspective, I see these conditions as being not only easily managed, but also successfully corrected. I have had so much personal success with these conditions now that I am surprised by those who are so pessimistic by the diagnosis. Balancing the Hypothalamus, Thyroid and Adrenal axis. A key factor in treating these syndromes is to understand the neruoendocrione system and the role that it plays in homeostasis. Once you understand this, it’s simply a matter of using herbs specific to these systems, and feed a whole food natural diet that is anti inflammatory at its core. Typically a 12 week herbal program would look like this: •Blood detoxifying herbs - to clean adipose tissue and the blood stream from excess hormones and inflammation. If you have been following my articles you will find reference to blood detoxifiers in Baroque Horse International magazine issue 22

Circadian Rhythms An interesting factor of these syndromes is the impact of negative stress and daylight hours. It’s important to understand that horses most susceptible to these conditions can have the following profile: Stabled under lights. This treatment of our horses is very disturbing to their hormones and as part of management and restoration of the metabolism and the Hypothalemic-Immune SystemNeuroEndocrine Axis is to ensure that your horse is not stabled or kept under lights. In order for the Hypothalemic-Immune SystemNeuroEndocrine Axis to entrain (that is, start to work as it should in balance) the natural circadian rhythms of your horse must be respected. Keep him with other horses, running around naturally. Of course, managing chronic cases of laminitis and the syndromes requires very specific and individualised day to day management. Discussing your case with me personally is advised. For further information email info@mcdowellsherbal.com

The Horse Report No matter what level of competition, herbs can be used as a supplement to assist with developing athletic fitness. For example, with a horse recovering from a ligament or tendon injury: By supporting the liver this will then help the body strengthen tendons and ligaments. It will also assist if the horse is nervous. The type of nervousness will determine if you use dandelion root, turmeric, St Marys thistle or rosehips, individually or in conjunction, and these herbs can settle aggressive behaviour while improving the elasticity of the affected connective tissue, which could originally be reflective of the need for flexibility in the horse’s nature. Nutritional support can be provided to the nervous horse that has itchy skin or arthritis with nettles, combined with burdock as the supporting liver herb. While slippery elm will soothe the gut and in turn will ease the irritation to the skin so that the horse can relax and better uptake nutrition that may have not been able to feed the skin before. Soothing the horse’s bladder with cornsilk or settling his kidneys with parsley leaf may help to balance an unsettled nature, especially when a horse’s urine increases when stressed or when a mare is in season. These herbs can ‘wash away’ the perception that triggers the horse that shies or jumps at shadows.

Slippery Elm For horses, slippery elm bark powder is most commonly used internally, to treat conditions such as scouring (diarrhoea) and gastric ulceration and as aftercare in some types of colic cases. It soothes and coats injured and inflamed tissues, helping them to heal and reducing the likelihood of scarring, as well as drawing out toxins and irritants. It can be added to a moist chaff/grain feed or combined with plain yoghurt (with live cultures) and/or honey, mashed banana or mashed pumpkin, and added to feed or syringed into the mouth.

Equine fungal skin conditions - Ringworm Ringworm is a fungal skin condition that commonly affects many species, including horses. The fungus is generally either Trichophyton mentagrophytes or Microsporum species. Unfortunately, this fungus and its spores are very hardy and can survive for weeks outside of a host, acting as a ready source of infection for any horse that comes into contact with them. Because of its infectious nature, it is important to recognize signs that your horse may have ringworm. This will allow you to begin treating the condition quickly and to take appropriate action to decrease the risk of spreading the infection further A horse may be infected for up to three weeks before signs develop and therefore look entirely normal. Typically, the first hint of infection is patches or tufts of hair that don't lie flat and stand a little proud of the coat. This is because the ringworm fungus invades the hair shaft and weakens the hairs which makes them stand at angles. These hairs are easy to pluck out because of the damage to the hair shaft. Areas where the skin is rubbed regularly, such as on the neck along the line of the reins, or behind the thighs where the rug string rubs, are more vulnerable to infection. The skin in these areas is slightly worn away and weakened by the friction. Areas such as the nose and muzzle are at increased risk, as the horse explores water and feed bowls used by other (possibly infected) horses.

The ringworm fungus invades the hair shaft and weakens the hairs which makes them stand at a strange angle, damaged hairs are shed, leaving bald patches.

Ringworm lives off superficial, dead skin cells and hair, so lesions appear on the skin's surface. As the infection progresses the damaged hairs are shed, leading to small bald patches. Often there are multiple patches that have the appearance of round, bald, scaly areas. These are often grouped together on the neck, withers, or behind the thighs, although any area can be affected. As the infection becomes mature, the bald areas may coalesce together to form larger bald areas. These patches are often scaly and may have a grey, 'cigarette ash" tinge to them. Crusts may form over the bald area, but these are not a sign of healing, indeed the crusts can protect the fungi and make it more difficult to treat.

Unfortunately, a common way to catch ringworm is from other infected horses. This can happen simply by rubbing against a fence or stable touched by another infected horse. Get the ringworm diagnosed by a veterinarian. Your vet will diagnose ringworm either by examining samples of plucked hairs under the microscope to look for the fungus or fungal spores. The first line of treatment is to use a topical treatment that is wiped over the affected areas to damage and kill the fungus. As ringworm is very contagious take care to wear gloves so that your skin doesn't become affected, and Clean all equipment and areas that the infected horse has been in contact with.

`Fat pony founder’ - understanding laminitis number of cases we see today are very different both in their cause, and presentations.

By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic

In essence, there are primarily four major causes of laminitis: * Acute feed disorders * Blood poisoning or septicaemia * Supporting limb laminitis * Endocrinopathies

Laminitis, or “Founder” as it is referred to, has been a devastating disease for as long as the horse has been domesticated.

years could well have resulted in putting the horse to sleep. Laminitis remains the enigma. Yes, we now know so much more about the disease, and certainly have vastly improved techniques for dealing with cases but the goal posts have changed dramatically, so much so, that in the past decade, a

Laminitis, or “Founder” as it is referred to, has been a devastating disease for as long as the horse has been domesticated. Traditionally, founder refers to sinking and it is derived from the relationship to boats sinking, or “foundering”. Strictly speaking, founder in horses means that the pedal bone sinks through the bottom of the foot, obviously with devastating consequences in the horse. Nowadays, veterinarians refer to these horses as `sinkers’. Fortunately these are not so common but they certainly still occur and are the most hyperacute and catastrophic of the “old school” typical cases of laminitis. Next in line are the “rotated” pedal bone cases, and again, these also certainly still occur. Both these syndromes are the result of what we have all traditionally referred to as founder, however, by far the greatest

The acute feed disorders were what we traditionally referred to as laminitis and the usual scenario was some accidental sudden access to the grain or the feed shed. Fortunately management and the prevalence nowadays of pelleted feed has reduced the incidence of this. Endotoxic causes from severe illness such as colitis, pleurisy, travel sickness, retained foetal membranes, and so on, are still very common and the resulting laminitis is usually devastating and can be fatal. These cases are a real emergency and prompt intensive intervention is necessary to minimise the effects. This form of laminitis is the most common cause of the traditional basement membrane disease that we have now learned so much about. Supporting limb laminitis occurs when the horse has some severe injury in one leg and bears most of the body weight on the other limb. Unfortunately, the resulting disease is often far worse than the initial problem. We now manage such cases with supporting shoes on the “good” leg to help reduce this risk. Endocrinopathies are now the major cause of laminitis. We have always known the “fat” ponies founder but it is only the last decade or so that we have learned the real underlying causes. This disease is caused by aberrations in carbohydrate metabolism by the body. There are two major pathways. “Cushings” syndrome is very common and is the result of a “growth” in the pituitary gland in the brain of the horse. It is quite common, presents a range of symptoms, the most serious of which is laminitis and fortunately can now be very accurately diagnosed and treated with medication. The other pathway is known as equine metabolic syndrome, (EMS). This is very complex, still not properly understood, and can be very difficult to control or manage. Continued page 11

whole new equine disease has evolved. “Equine Metabolic Syndrome” is easily now the most common cause of laminitis. This syndrome is now the focus of research in institutions around the world as we struggle to come to grips with the causes, and importantly, how to manage and control the problem. EMS will be a focus of a separate future article as it is very complex, but for this month, I would like to focus on laminitis as a whole, and discuss the complete picture, particularly in relation to the focus on feeding in this edition.

Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse

The “Big Three” emergency equine diseases that veterinarians have to deal with are colic, cuts and injuries and laminitis. Little has changed in the importance and severity of these conditions over the 45 years that I have been an equine veterinarian. Each and every case is still extremely serious and potentially life or career threatening in it’s impact on the horse and owner, but the advances in knowledge about the pathophysiology, causes and management of these conditions have been monumental. Advances in worm control and feeding management have progressed to the point that well managed stables will have a very low incidence of colic, and even in the worst scenarios, surgical techniques now offer a very excellent chance of a successful outcome. Injuries to horses still happen, but in today’s practice, we can expect to be able to deal with very, very nasty wounds and anticipate a speedy, cosmetically appealing and successful outcome for cases that in earlier

Laminitis once diagnosed can be managed  From page 10 Basically it is due to an increase in the circulating insulin in the blood. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas in response to demands for, and increases in, circulating blood glucose. Blood insulin levels can rise to very high levels and it is now known that this excess insulin circulating through the laminae in the feet, directly causes laminitis. High insulin is the direct opposite of true diabetes where the problem is a failure of insulin production. In so called “Type 2â€? diabetes, or insulin resistance, the insulin is high but the cells are unable to respond to it. Insulin resistance in particular in the horse is very poorly understood but it is common and can be devastating. Simplistically, controlling carbohydrate intake in the diet, should remove the stimulus for insulin secretion and this forms the basis for the thrust of attempting to manage susceptible horses via the diet but it is nowhere as easy as that. Very definitely, exposure of sus-

ceptible horses to fresh green new grass growth such as occurs after spring rains, almost guarantees an “outbreak due to the high sugar levels in the grass. Diets that conform to the so called “Low Glycaemic Index formula are now readily available and are a major advance in helping to control the disease, but I am not convinced that they are the answer. Critically, the onset of laminitis is related to a surge in blood insulin and diet is very important in helping this, but unfortunately there seem to other factors that we are not properly aware of that also contribute. Many of the laminitis cases in this category are not as devastating and potentially life threatening as the “basement membrane form. They seem to come and go a little, undoubtedly due to insulin surges, and often the radiographic changes in their feet are much more subtle. Sufficient to say that any horse that has a sudden onset of generalised lameness should have immediate veterinary attention, and fortunately, once diagnosed Lateral radiograph of the distal limb of a horse with laminitis Note correctly, most can be managed. rotation of pedal bone away from hoof wall towards sole.

This can lead to skin irritations and loss of coat. * What are the ingredients in Calafea HORSE? Calafea HORSE Itch Fixing Oil combines high quality cold-pressed Coconut Oil, Black Cumin Oil, Neem Oil and Lemon Myrtle Leaf Oil * How do I store Calafea HORSE? You can easily store Calafea in the locker or in your care box. Store Calafea out of the sun and shake bottle well before use. Calafea can be used over three years once opened but its effectiveness may eventually diminish. * How long does Calafea HORSE keep?

Everything for maintaining your Tack in top condition

In principle, Calafea HORSE can be kept for several years, whether opened or unopened, but its effectiveness may eventually diminish. * Where can I buy Calafea? You can buy it in our online shop. And we are working hard to get Calafea on the shelf at local horse equipment stores. Wholesale enquiries are welcome. * What can I do if my horse licks the treated skin areas? No worries! Licking of Calafea is completely harmless to your horse all ingredients are food grade and 100% natural. * My horse’s skin in the treatment area is hot what is going on? This is the Calafea Effect. The unique blend of pure and essential oils turbocharge the skin & coat healing process. The healing area will be warmer than non affected areas of your horse’s skin due to all the activity within the skin and increased blood flow. Typically the regeneration occurs within one to two weeks For further information Ph 0 2 4577 2510 or E-Mail: australia@calafea.com Page 12

Is diet affecting your horse’s behaviour? By JENNY PATERSON B.Sc www.calmhealthyhorses.com Has your horse had a mysterious change in personality? Is he doing things he doesn't normally do? Do these issues come and go, get worse in Spring and Autumn? Do you feel frustrated that you are not making progress in training or lessons? Here are just some of the problems you may be experiencing: In the paddock - fence walking, aggressive with other horses or towards you, agitated when grooming/ tacking up/ floating, abnormally 'twitchy', doesn't want to be brushed, cranky, girthy, fidgety when saddled, ear-shy, difficult to halter or bridle, pulls back, uncooperative with legs, rushes through gateways, anxious, overly claustrophobic when floating, rushes off, panics at feel of back bar With groundwork or lunging Argy-bargy, seems belligerent, objects to basic ground-work leaps, plunges, rears, kicks out, hollows out, leans in, goes too fast, short-stepping, tight behind, disunites When riding - No attention

span, separation anxiety, limited progress with schooling, nose rubbing, head-flicking/shaking, spooks even at familiar things, over-reactive, hyper-sensitive, resents the leg, nappy/no go, no fun to ride. With movement - Moves 'stiffly', seems to need joint supplements, muscle sore, tight hamstrings, short-stepping, choppy, hard to sit, tends to hollow out, trouble with canter leads, 'sacro-iliac' problems, 'bunny-hopping', disuniting, bouts of 'staggers', seems to need lots of 'treatments'. Plus other health issues: digestive, mud-fever, skin, hoof, hormonal, allergies, respiratory, sore feet and laminitis.

All of these respond extremely well to appropriate diet changes. Most of you will have already been through the gamut of other possible causes! You will have already asked yourself: What if it is lack of 'training'? Many owners initially blame themselves but bio-chemistry problems cannot be fixed by training. Indeed 'training' horses who are feeling unwell and not in a learning frame of mind can be very unpleasant for them. Is it lack of work? Neither can these imbalances be 'fixed' by more exercise (wet saddle blankets)! Very competent riders have repeatedly tried and failed. There is a big differ-

ence between exuberance and a horse who is not metabolically normal. Is it 'temperament'? It is very easy to misjudge 'temperament'. Best to eliminate cringe-worthy descriptions mongrel, bitch, difficult, has attitude, is stupid, is quirky, silly, needs experienced rider, 'project horse'- from you dictionary. All of these are descriptions of horses who need a diet makeover! Is it just 'bad' behaviour? Sure there are horses who have learned undesirable habits with previous owners but you will find they can very quickly learn new ones when they are functioning normally. When you understand how mineral imbalances affect brain, nerve and muscle function it is easy to see how grass can adversely affect horses. Time and time again we have succeeded with the most 'badly behaved', most difficult horses without 'working through issues', completely restoring them to health with diet and where appropriate in conjunction with Emmett Therapy. Equine Dentistry with or without sedation By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP As a qualified equine dentist who does not sedate horses, I am often asked how a horse puts up with dental work without it. Equine dentists are not legally allowed to sedate horses and so legally I can’t, as well as personally I don’t want or need to. The vast majority of horses can easily manage a dental visit with very little stress and I find sedation is rarely needed except for in special cases, which will be discussed further on. So, how do I and other qualified equine dentists convince your horse to let me file their teeth while they’re wide awake? As with most practices in the horse world, dentists don’t just make horses stand still. A 400kg horse will not allow little 70kg me to physically restrain it and file his or her teeth. It takes patience, horsemanship, and a good foundation of trust between horse and owner. When I start my dental examine, be it touching their nose, placing the gag on or manually palpating the mouth to diagnose problems, I never just ‘push through’ if the horse is demonstrating stress or unease. If a dentist ignores the horse’s warning signs early on, there is no way the horse will be able to maintain calm while I finish the job. So I take a step back and make sure the horse can be comfortable with each little stage. By doing this, I can explain to the horse what I want. I want him or her to stand still and put up with me. The more still and calm they are, the faster I go, the more breaks they get and overall the

entire experience is lovely and pleasant and the horse walks away with a lovely set of smooth teeth! Whether the horse listens to this technique can often come down to its history with the owner and groundwork experience. Horses can be taught to think through situations and not panic at the first sign of discomfit. Having a visit from the dentist isn’t painful but it isn’t exactly pleasant for the horse. But neither is having the girth done up, wearing a bit, having injections and having shoes nailed on. Ultimately, it is for the horse’s own good and can be a short, pain-free experience for all involved. Of course, horses are all different- different maturity levels, different tempers and different reactions to everything. So occasionally I have to pull the pin and recommend the horse be done under sedation to save everyone time and excess stress. So why do some horses need sedation and when is it recommended? Sedation definitely has its place with some horses. Pain responses from horses with overdue mouths (meaning sharps points have severely lacerated the horses inside cheeks so any movement inside the

Samantha Gunter Equine Dentistr y Caring, Reliable, and Comprehensive Treatment

mouth is very painful), fractured molars and bad molar malocclusions may need sedation with analgesia (pain relief) for the safety of all involved and to avoid the stress it would cause the horse. Extractions of molars and incisors almost always need sedation with pain relief unless they are extremely loose. And even excluding pain-related reasons, some horses just can’t deal with pressure. Due to their mentality, they cannot handle the dentist without sedation. These are the most unfortunate patients as they often could be completed simply and cheaply by manual tools and with patience and caring, but instead they will need to be sedated by a vet every time their teeth need

doing- requiring more recovery time, more time in general for the overall procedure, usually a powertool, and more expense for the owner. Being a dentist isn’t just about understanding anatomy, nutrition, and how to diagnose and treat problems in your horse’s mouth: equal to, if not more important, is the ability to read a horse and work it through the procedure as stress-free as possible. Overtime, if you maintain your horse’s teeth so they don’t get to the painful, overdue stage, and you work on your horse’s response to pressure, the dental visit will be a quick, half-hour blip in your day and then you and your horse can get on with your lives.

What benefits do you gain from supplements? By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist, Nutritional Therapist Genetics Š 2017

www.hiform.com.au

What supplements do you have in your feed room right now? Are there containers of various herbal concoctions, vitamin and mineral supplements? Supplements have become much more a part of general health care these days, this is very different to many years ago when horses were just fed oats and hay. It is well worth considering; does your horse really need a supplement and if he or she does then is it the right one? Very often horse owners use supplements because perhaps their friend down the road may have mentioned that they were using a product with impressive results. I t is extremely important to understand how to read your label effectively, this means for example if you have a product where it states it contains 2.6 g of vitamin B1, per kilo and the dose rate is 25 g per day for 500 kg horse. It may sound like 2.6 g is quite a reasonable dose of this vitamin, however when you convert the 2.6 g to the dose rate being given, it only equates to 0.065 g per 25 g dose which in fact is hardly of any benefit whatsoever and your horse may already be receiving this level just through his regular daily feed. So, reading a label is important. Next time you are visiting a feed store or a saddlery store take your calculator in with you. You will be quite surprised to find that many supplements contain very little actives per kilo, they also contain a poorer form of ingredient, this means a simple poorly absorbed mineral, feed grade vitamins and in many cases a great deal of filler. In my opinion if you are paying a decent price for a supplement you expect it to be of excellent quality, you should expect it to be produced in a HCCAP and GMP approved facility, this is the ideal. You also should expect that the manufacturer of the supplement can provide you with detailed information at any time on any product that they are producing. You have every right to ask for this information to ensure that you will be confident in using the product for the purpose it has been designed. The most endearing feature of supplements is the flexibility of being used in many ways. Supplements can be beneficial with horses that suffer from joint issues, pain and muscle soreness, nervous horses to assist with tenseness, they can be used to assist with weight or help

Page 16

with a hormonal imbalance in one of the most common issues of digestive health. Certainly, they do have their uses and in my profession as an Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist results can be very exciting, but my concern as always is the health of the horse. As horse owners, many of us take supplements every day, like the general population, but in many cases, do not know why we are taking them? There is no doubt that from a scientific point of view certain types of supplements can be enormously beneficial and there is a wealth of supporting clinical data and published trials to support the use of supplements. In my human health practice, I conduct genetic testing in the form of Nutrigenomics, whilst we don't have this testing available for horses at this stage, my experience with Nutrigenomics testing has provided me with a slightly different approach to the equine side of my business. We know only too well that certain nutrients can switch gene expression on and off, with humans and animals. So, using certain nutrients in a balanced form will definitely be of enormous benefit to your horse and in particular your horse's performance and health. If a horse is fed a well-balanced diet, does the horse require a daily supplement? The answer is probably yes, simply because a regular diet will not provide most horses with sufficient nutrients on its own. Over recent years, research in Australia and overseas has provided more accurate guidelines on the nutritional requirements of horses and how they alter in relation to growth, exercise or reproductive requirement. Analysis of feeds gathered from different localities and climates, has proven that there are low or inadequate levels of certain nutrients, which can affect the health and performance of a horse. In some cases, individual nutrients provided in feeds are imbalanced or more than the horse needs, if not corrected, can be detrimental to a horse's wellbeing. Older horses not working with access to excellent quality pasture may obtain an adequate intake of major nutrients, minerals and vitamins to meet their needs, but often they may

still require some form of supplementation. Research has proven that soils in Australia that have been constantly producing feed, whether it be hays or grain have depleted nutrient levels in the soil, leaving produce grown in these areas sadly deficient in many important vitamins and minerals. The salinity level has also risen, and the overuse of pesticides has also contributed to nutrient deficient soils. Is there a risk of over-supplementing? There are many nutritional supplements on the market for horses; almost all contain simple minerals, which are poorly absorbed and utilised by the horse and then are required at elevated levels to provide some support. Many supplements also contain vitamins, which are feed grade (not fit for human consumption). Many other ingredients used in these supplements are industrial and technical grade. There are also many by-products used in the horse feed and supplement industry, put simply these are waste products and not suitable to feed to any horse at any time. So my advice is always check the quality of ingredients and choose only oral grade, after all don't our horses deserve the best? There is no excuse for thinking that it's okay to give an animal a poorly absorbed or poor grade ingredients when we would never consider it. Like any other substance your horse ingests, supplements should be treated with respect, so it is important to be aware that they have the potential to do harm, as well as good. Using herbs to support the horse's system can be of benefit but herbs tend to have a limited effect used on their own, in many cases a specific group of herbs chosen for their ability to work together-Synergistically will be more effective. Using herbs simply because you have read something on the internet where they may be of benefit can often lead to trouble. Many herbs have side effects and contraindications check with your practitioner first. Finally, generally speaking no one knows your horse better than you do so always be observant and take note of any changes in your horse's temperament, coat condition and performance level. Always seek professional advice on any nutritional decisions. For further professional advice and free nutritional profiling please contact (03) 9775 6422 or enq@hiform.com.au

The Horse Report Horse racing myths by animal rights activists busted A horse vet and PhD student has told delegates at an Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) conference in Melbourne that much of the information animal rights activists use in campaigns opposing horse racing is misleading or wrong. In her address, Horse Racing Myths: What role does research play?, Meredith Flash presented findings from her 2005 Victorian thoroughbred foal crop epidemiology study, which disprove myths spread by animal rights groups about two-year-old racing and horse welfare, un-raced and retired racehorses being sent to slaughter, and low racing participation rates among thoroughbred foal crops. Dr Flash, who also owns a small equine vet practice, is examining the career profiles of Victorian-born thoroughbred foals, and investigating the risk factors for horses from 2006-16 that had a race day health event, for her University of Melbourne PhD. Her presentation to the AVA conference discussed how misquoting of a 1995 paper by veterinarian John Bourke led to widespread and erroneous claims that only a small proportion of thoroughbred foal crops race. Dr Flash’s foal crop study showed most horses trained (74%) and raced (65%), contradicting claims by animal activists that the racing industry is responsible for so-called ‘wastage’ due to over breeding. Dr Flash also examined how the absence of research on horses retiring from racing has led to false claims from animal rights organisations that most horses retiring from racing were sent to slaughter. Her study found that horses that raced were re-homed (50%), became Australian Stud Book bloodstock (25%), deceased (14%), other pursuits (9%), or were still racing at the start of their 10-year-old racing season (2%). Most rehomed horses went on to pursuits like eventing, pony club, or pleasure riding. Dr Flash’s presentation also discussed how ignoring over two decades of research has fed the myth that two-year-old racing is widespread and detrimental to horses. To demonstrate this, she reviewed how previous research supported findings from her study that horses that start racing at two years of age had longer careers, on average, then horses that started racing at an older age.

Page 22

A study by horse vet and PhD student Dr Meredith Flash has addressed many misleading claims by animal activitists about horse welfare, particularly regarding two-year-olds in the horse racing industry.

Dr Flash’s finding that horses that started racing at three years or older were six times more likely to only race for one season, supports previous research that the risk of retirement deceases with a younger age of first start. Her research also found that while one-third of the foal crop entered training as two-yearolds, only 13% raced, contradicting RSPCA claims that ‘a large proportion of thoroughbreds start their racing careers as two year olds’ (RSCPA www.kb.rspca.org.au). “For the horse racing industry to retain its social license, researchers and regulators need to engage with the community by providing clear, unambiguous and accurate information, and correct the wrong and misleading information some groups use in their campaigns,” Dr Flash said.

The research proceedings presented to the conference are available on request from Dr Flash. Dr Flash’s 2005 Thoroughbred Foal Crop Study won the 2015 Norm Larkin Prize, and an Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientist Prize for Best Clinical Paper Racing Victoria funded the 2005 Thoroughbred Foal Crop Study and has contributed funding to the University of Melbourne for Dr Flash’s PhD. Equine Assisted Therapy designed for children By JANE FAULKNER Director, Equine Assisted Therapy Australia

Equine Therapy is a great form of therapy for kids. It provides many benefits including kids generally love to be outside, they get to talk to a therapist about their problems and take part in exercises and play games to find solutions, they learn to look after and care for someone other than themselves, they learn how to form relationships and maintain relationships, they learn how to focus and set boundaries and the horses provide a non-judgemental friend to talk to. The horses also teach kids valuable life skills like; Being present - noticing how you feel about something and trusting that feeling; Being honest - horses are very honest and will give immediate feedback about whether they are comfortable or not; Being congruent- saying what you feel and not pretending you are ok if you are not; Awareness - being curious about everything around you, using all of your senses; Empathy- building a relationship with a horse requires empathy, it's important to be curious about the horse and who he is and how different things feel otherwise it won't trust you; Clear communication skills - horses read our body language and respond to it, kids learn how to work with their own body language and how to read the horses body language in order to remain safe and build a relationship with the horse.

Relationships with horses can reveal a lot about what may be troubling the individual.

Horses also help kids to build confidence and self esteem- it takes a lot of courage and skill to build a relationship with a horse and to have the horse respect your wishes. In our equine therapy sessions, the kids often arrive with no horse experience. Some kids are terrified and some are so excited that we have to use delay tactics at the gate! We start our sessions doing activities with each other about

respectful touch and safety around horses. I want anyone who works alongside the horses to treat them with respect and kindness and so we talk about how to do that before we even enter the arena. These activities help the kids to become more aware of how their actions might impact others, it makes them slow down and think and explore different possibilities about behaviour. In the sessions with the horses, the kids explore different ways of relating to the horses; what do I need to do to get the horse to want to be with me? What do I need to do to help the horse to calm down? The horses provide instant feedback so kids get to see straight away how they are influencing the horse and then they have an opportunity to try another way. For example; Simon is a 13-year-old boy with Aspergers, he finds it very difficult to focus and to notice body language and non-verbal cues in others. Simon was doing an exercise with Phoenix and then he started to loose focus, Phoenix started to walk around in circles and stopped listening to Simon. Phoenix knew that Simon was no longer present and aware so Phoenix took the lead. Noticing Phoenix take over, Simon took some deep breaths and become present to himself, he started to connect with Phoenix again by talking to him and breathing deep. Phoenix stopped and came into Simon to rest beside him. The horses provide really clear feedback to kids and an opportunity to build a friendship based on trust and connection. www.equineassistedtherapyaustralia.com.au

Don’t allow external factors influence our training By TANJA KRAUS I am inspired to write this article after riding Boogie. I have been participating in the #tkh100 challenge (see the coloured panel for details) and doing it with four horses. I was riding Boogie in the arena, and ran her through one of the Cowboy Dressage tests. I had decided to do a Walk Jog test as she had been resting for a couple of weeks prior to starting the challenge, and I am trying to ease her back into work. We completed the test, I worked on improving a couple of things she found challenging, then I ran through our basic lateral movements. I had been resting during the workout, and was in a rest phase. I thought to myself "I'm pretty happy with what we have achieved today" - she had shown some improvement across all areas of the training. Then I looked at the time - 20 minutes. It had only been 20 minutes! My first thought was 'What else can I do' ? My second thought was 'why do I need to do anything else?'. I ended up dismounting and just sitting with her for a while, before heading back up to

Saddle Up... Total Equine Qld Horse Expo is on Again!!!! The Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo is a highlight not to be missed at Toowoomba Showgrounds on Saturday and Sunday. September 23 and 24. The event attracts horse enthusiasts from the Darling Downs, wider Queensland and across Australia to inspect new products and services, gain information on horse health and education, benefit from the many equine disciplines on show and pick up a few bargains in the trade stalls. From Dressage to Western, Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo celebrates a wide variety of equestrian pursuits in a unique two-day event that aligns education and entertainment. Over the weekend, enjoy the very best of our Australian equine lifestyle with health and horsemanship presentations, breed displays and discipline demonstrations, the Trainer's Challenge, be entertained in the fantastic night show and browse through more than 100 different equine retailers. In 2016 the TEQ Trainer's Challenge was introduced which combines three trainers, three judges and one round yard in a challenge which puts three talented horse trainers against each other demonstrating their skills with young horses. The Trainers for the 2017 Trainer's Challenge are: FRED WATKINS Fred Watkins owns and runs Watkins Horse Handlers with his wife Rachel and has recently moved from Western Australia back to his home state of Queensland. Fred was born in Springsure, Queensland and grew up on a large cattle property. School holidays were spent mustering which involved working up young horses for the mustering team. Fred loved helping his father with this work and developed an interest for starting and educating young horses at a very early age. In 1999, Fred moved to Western Australia to work with his uncle, Bruce Watkins, a champion rodeo rider, well regarded breaker and race horse trainer. This gave Fred an opportunity to expand his skills and learn about working in other horse industries. While working for Bruce, Fred met his wife Rachel. Fred and Rachel moved to the beautiful Margaret River region in 2000 and started their business, Watkins Horse Handlers. The business was an immediate success and quickly built up a large and loyal clientele. While in Margaret River Fred became involved with the charity, The Outback Heritage Horse Association of WA (since closed) and began working with rescued wild horses. Fred's admiration for Australia's brumbies began here and he credits much of his horsemanship skills to the many wild horses he has since helped rescue, rehabilitate and train. In 2007, Fred and Rachel moved to Perth. Fred very quickly established himself as WA's most in demand horse trainer and also developed a reputation for being able to rehabilitate horses labelled as difficult or dangerous. In 2016, Fred and Rachel moved back to Qld and have now settled in Boonah in the South East. Having left behind over 5000 clients, Fred Page 30

Action, entertainment, education and fun will combine for the Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo in Toowoomba in September. regularly travels back to Western Australia and other parts of Australia for his clinics, and starts and trains horses at home in between his busy clinic schedule. Fred's job satisfaction comes from helping people achieve their goals with their horses. He loves being able to help and support every sort of horse owner and rider, irrespective of the discipline, and has earned a reputation as a kind and down to earth trainer, teacher and clinician. For more information visit www.watkinshorsehandlers.com.au DONAL HANCOCK Donal grew up on a 30,000 acre cattle station near a town called Injune in Queensland. Horses were an essential way to gather cattle and that's where Donal's interest in horses began. Much later he found himself riding bulls on the coastline of Qld which then led to a job in the Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast. Shortly after spending some time performing in this show Donal was taken on by "Double Dan Horsemanship" where he has been training and travelling throughout the USA and Canada furthering his horse skills. Just recently, Donal has established "Hancock Horsemanship" where he provides training and lessons for horses and people. Donal is excited to be participating in the TEQ Trainer's Challenge and is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with everyone at the expo. DANIEL ROBINSON Daniel Robinson heads a breaking in business in Sydney's west known as DPR Breaking with his fiancĂŠe Alexandra and

their small team. Daniel was born in Sha Tin, Hong Kong during his father's winning streak as champion jockey there but grew up in the famous racing town of Newmarket, England. From a very early age Daniel's life was submerged in horses and the racing industry. When old enough, Daniel also pursued a career as a jockey but it quickly became too difficult to meet the weight requirements, unfortunately he did not have his father's build. And so he continued to work with horses and soon became interested in educating the young ones and developing his skills as a horseman. He travelled around parts of Europe before heading to Australia to observe and partake in the different methods used for training horses here. Finding it very different to some of the more traditional English methods, Daniel was keen to learn to more and travelled to Murgon, Qld to learn from one of Australia's finest horsemen, Ian Francis. With the help of a great mentor and his naturally calm approach, Daniel continued to refine and shape his method for starting horses, and soon began training horses in Sydney. Now, Daniel breaks in for all disciplines, particularly racing and is known for his ability to turn even the most difficult horses into willing, relaxed partners. When Daniel isn't educating horses for Clients, he spends time training his stock horses Otis and Hazel (The way of the horse winner Roseridge Monroe) and hopes to free up some time to take them out to compete in the future. Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo is the ultimate weekend for every horse lover - fantastic presenters, horse breeds, education, shopping galore, trainer's challenge and a big night show.
