Horses and horse Riding can be unpredictable and often dangerous it pays to be insured. Now you have a new option

New Equestrian Sports Insurance The possibility of an accident is something most of us do not like to think about. Recreational and sports horse riding enthusiasts are no different in this regard. In a bold new initiative a personal accident insurance policy has been introduced that is affordable, has substantial levels of cover and offers unprecedented levels of support for Australian equestrian clubs and associations. National Commercial Insurance Solutions (NCIS) Pty Ltd offers Equestrian Sports Insurance (ESI) Pty Ltd in conjunction with one of Lloyd’s of London’s largest underwriting agencies located within Australia. This joint venture product offering tailored coverage to the equestrian industry nationwide, has been developed with the support of the Australian Horse Industry Council. President of the AHIC Joy Poole OAM stated “The AHIC is very pleased by this offering. It provides levels of cover not seen before within Australia as well as giving monetary support to the Australian Equine Industry. The AHIC Board of Directors recommends that horse enthusiasts, regardless of their chosen discipline, have a look at this insurance”. The ESI policy offers 24/7 coverage for all non income earning equestrian activities, including riding, showing, handling and daily maintenance of your horse or pony. It is cost effective and provides cover for horse enthusiasts aged from 3 to 80 years of age.

AHIC Membership including the ESI policy can be purchased for $169.50 through the ESI website. Upon purchase of the ESI product, the joining individual will automatically become an AHIC social member and receive all current benefits including newsletter and updates on the Australian horse industry plus discount offers. Some of the ESI policy benefits include: •24/7 cover whilst undertaking non-income earning equestrian activities; •Policy is available to all members of the general public (no prior equestrian membership is required); •$125,000 lump sum benefit available at all insured age levels; •Cover for funeral expenses; •Australia wide coverage; •Cover available for those aged between 3 and 80 years of age; •Same day policy acceptance; •Rebate of $10 back to the purchasers club or association if the club or association is an affiliate member of the AHIC. Joining is easy with a simple 5 minute questionnaire to complete, after which you will automatically receive your AHIC social membership number and insurance policy documentation. The AHIC recommends that anyone who chooses to be around horses should familiarise themselves with the HorseSafe code of Practice, which is available on the AHIC website. Mary Valley hosts endurance championships Imbil, in Queensland’s Mary Valley, will play host to the 2016 Equestrian Australia Endurance Championships when Australia's first purpose-built endurance complex opens its paddocks to riders from across the country from July 14 -17. The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) event has been awarded to the newly founded Imbil-based Sterling Crossing Endurance Association which is preparing to welcome over 50 competitors and their support teams to the region. Matt Sample, owner of Sterling Endurance Arabians and founder of the club, said he was delighted to host the internationally accredited event which would see the best in the sport battle it out for the national title over distances of 82, 120 and 160 kilometres. "Hosting the Australian Championships at our new facility is certainly a wonderful way to launch the ride base which we have been working on perfecting since April 2015," Mr Sample said. "This event requires rider to qualify and given the entry requirements are quite stringent,

Page 4

Matthew Sample, winner of the highly acclaimed Tom Quilty Cup in 2009 with his horses (Tarrangower Crescendo on the left and Brookleigh Ricardo on the right) and dog Eddie. we expect the country's top endurance riders to converge on Imbil for the four-day event." While endurance may not be one of the most well-known FEI events, the equestrian sport has a long history having started in the early 1900s as a military test for cavalry mounts. Today the controlled long-dis-

tance rides see competitors cover large distances across diverse terrain with the winning rider and horse being the ones to cross the finish line first, having passed a number of veterinary checks along the way to ensure the horse is fit and in a good condition. "Endurance is quite unique in

that it results in a very strong bond between horse and rider due to the high level of trust and the longevity of the horse in the sport," Mr Sample said. "While many equestrian events only see horses compete for a few years, endurance horses come into their own at around eight years of age and can then compete comfortably until 15 years of age or more. "When you're starting a ride at 3am in the morning and riding for over nine hours in a 160km event, it's like sharing an adventure with your best friend - it's a very special experience. “Endurance riders have the utmost respect and admiration for their horses as the sport requires the horse to have exceptional athleticism, intuition, intelligence and a very competitive nature. "To this end Arabians are the most suited breed for endurance - they love it, it's in their blood and the thrill of starting a ride is palpable for both the rider and the horse." Mr Sample's family has been involved with the sport for over 40 years. Continued page 17

Dealing with bleeding from the nose By DAVID LOVELL BVSC All are aware that any form of spontaneous bleeding is of concern and usually is suggestive of some potentially serious underlying condition. In the horse, one of the more common situations we see is blood trickling from the nose, often for no obvious apparent reason. Yes, it is of concern and each case warrants investigation. It is a relatively common condition in racehorses and usually means either a prolonged spell, or even a permanent bar from racing. The more sedate pleasure horse usually does not suffer the same problems as racehorses but they also can have very serious underlying conditions. If, and when ever, your horse is unfortunate enough to exhibit blood from the nostrils, you should immediately seek proper advice. Epistaxis, or “Blood from the Nostrils”, is a relatively common occurrence in the pleasure horse. Fortunately many of these cases are benign and minor, but there

Each case of a horse bleeding form the nose warrants investigation even though the occurance is relatively common.

bleeders are quite common and are a major issue for the horse. This syndrome is referred to as “EIPH”, (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage). The condition is somewhat unique to racehorses and is quite rare in other species that run and compete at high speed, (humans, greyhounds, big cats, etc). No one is really sure exactly why this condition occurs in horses but they do have some unique physiological features that are not in other animals. First and foremost, the horse has a very precise synchronisation of respiration and stride, particu-

are some very serious disease conditions that can occur and as always, early diagnosis and intervention can offer opportunity for successful treatment. As mentioned earlier, racetrack

larly at the gallop. Simplistically this means is that the horse completes one full breath cycle for each and every stride. The horse breathes in as the horse lifts off and accelerates from the front lead leg and breathes out during deceleration of the limbs and landing. This is all very closely timed and synchronised to allow maximum inspiration and intake of air and similarly maximum expiration and removal of “processed” air. Secondly, the horse is designed for “flight” as a means of defence and the heart rate has an enormous range from 40 at rest to well over 200 at maximal exercise. This allows an enormous increase in cardiac output or blood flow to enhance the animal’s ability to run. This also means an enormous increase in blood pressure, particularly in the lungs, and also, a natural form of “blood doping” where very large volumes of blood stored in the spleen are injected into the system to increase the oxygen carrying capacity. Some combination of all these factors, combined with some possible acquired problems such as over training stress or inflammatory respiratory diseases can result in massive capillary breakdown, usually in the upper lung lobes, and haemorrhage. Most often this as seen as spontaneous blood coming from the nostrils as the horse warms down after exercise. continued page 11

The Horse Report

Seek early intervention for nose bleeds  from page 10 Obviously this is a very serious situation for the horse and racetrack stewards immediately bar the horse from future racing. This is usually for six months mandatory and most horses recover and race successfully again. If the horse bleeds a second time, the animal is barred from racing for life. Almost always, the problem is associated with maximal exercise and these horses are perfectly suitable and useful for slower paced pursuits. Certainly we can see EIPH events associated with slower speeds but these are rare and again usually settle with some rest. EIPH is common and we can usually presumptively diagnose this with the association with exercise. Spontaneous nose bled in sedentary horses is a different matter and certainly warrants proper investigation. Fortunately, the majority of these cases are innocuous and can be of little consequence. They can occur after the horse has sustained some form of head trauma, often unknown to the owner. There has been some bruising and damage in the nose or sinus and this can suddenly bleed. These usually clear up and settle quickly. Also, nosebleeds are commonly associated with upper respiratory virus infections, and horses, similarly to humans, can have some

minor bleeding just because the mucosal linings of the tract are inflamed and fragile. There are a number of much more serious conditions. Ethmoid Haematomas are not uncommon. These are a progressive benign “growth in the ethmoid labyrinth in the upper nostrils. These are very serious and need early diagnosis and intervention.

K9 Coat & Eyes Show Body & Condition

We have had great success with major surgical removal but the earlier this is done, the better. Commonly, these are injected with formalin with an aim to "slow them down. This does occur, but they commonly regrow and get bigger. We favour early surgery and then follow up injections to control any small re-growths. These haematomas are diagnosed by “scoping the horse, although a full series of xrays is also recommended as some are not easily seen on endoscopy. Cysts in the sinus and throat can also bleed and diagnosis can be a challenge but usually endoscopy and radiology will detect them. We often see small growths and tumours in the nostrils and pharynx that are very serious and can be difficult to deal with. Guttural Pouch Mycosis is fortunately very rare but is a very serious disease as this involves the carotid artery as it passes through the pouch. Advanced endoscopy is required for diagnosis. This condition is very rare in Australia, but certainly happens and requires immediate major surgery to correct It is impossible to cover all the possible conditions. I have tried to name most of the syndromes. Hopefully this helps explain what is happening and convinces some owners to seek early intervention if they are unlucky enough to see blood coming from their horse’s nose.

Understanding and treating stringhalt Written by Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ANTOINETTE FOSTER and SUZE GAZIA, Equine Nutritionist

Some horses have such severe stringhalt they actually kick themselves when they walk.

Clinical signs, such as pastern extension when the hock is flexed, can vary from one horse to another. Although stringhalt might look like strictly a muscular problem, neurologic issues are at the root of it. Nerve damage probably causes abnormal activity of certain sensory receptors called spindles. Located in the body of the muscles, spindles are responsible for detecting changes in muscle length. This faulty wiring of the spindles causes certain muscles to contract either too early or too late, or too much or too little, during certain phases of the gait. Thus, intermittent abduction (movement of the limb away from the body) and caudal (toward the tail) jerking in the hind limb may result from spasticity of the biceps femoris muscle (located along the back of the hindquarter) during the swing phase of

the stride. Stringhalt is divided into two major categories. "Australian" stringhalt usually is a temporary disease resulting from toxicity, whereas "classic" (or atypical, depending on the geographic region) stringhalt has no known cause and usually does not resolve on its own. Recorded results of Stringhalt Treatment Nutrition is the key to unlocking your horse’s genetic potential and has a very strong influence on all aspects of health and well-being. By feeding a simple balanced diet and supplementing with the recommended formulas it is unlikely the stringhalt will return once the horse has recovered, however it is essential to maintain the daily supplement Oxydane for the life of the horse. Over 25 years we have been treating Stringhalt very successfully.  continued page 15

www.hiform.com.au

Stringhalt is a condition which is very poorly understood - it is a condition in which the horse hyper flexes one or both hocks. The onset of stringhalt is generally very rapid. The condition occurs in adult horses and most horses recover completely but some horses progressively become worse. Australian stringhalt is different to the stringhalt found in the USA. In Australia, it is a jerk, a jump or a hop with the hind legs tucked up high, similar to the function of strings on a marionette. Stringhalt seems to make horses yank their legs up and halt them there momentarily before taking their next step. This uncontrollable exaggerated movement of the digital extensor muscles is the outward sign of neurologic disease, sometimes caused by toxicity, sometimes of unknown origin. If time doesn't cure it, the prognosis is poor. Today researchers are hard at work looking into ways to make horses with this condition safe, happy, and free of clinical signs. Stringhalt appears to be an age-old disease in horses. Descriptions of the disease date back to the Renaissance. William Shakespeare has even been credited for the name of the disease (as a variation of the term "springhalt," from Henry VIII). The clinical signs are usually more extreme when the horse is turning or backing up. Some horses have such severe stringhalt they actually kick themselves in the abdomen when trying to walk. Both hind legs might be equally affected and one might show more obvious signs than the other. In some cases stringhalt might be apparent in the forelegs.

The Horse Report

Diet is essential in treating stringhalt From page 14 Whilst the cause of this condition is apparently unknown there has been a common denominator with all stringhalt cases we have treated. Every stringhalt case has not been supplemented with a daily natural therapy formula and in many cases not fed a balanced feed ration. Some horses have been supplemented with the incorrect additives - many vets have a stock standard recommendation of magnesium. However it is vital to use the correct formula and for the prevention of stringhalt we recommend the use of the Oxydane on a daily basis at a 20 gram dose mixed into a slightly damp feed. It appears that this condition can definitely be prevented. At Hiform we believe that stringhalt may be a nutritionally based condition in which case the correct daily nutritional intake becomes absolutely paramount. RECOMMENDED TREATMENT 2 large rounded scoops of Oxydane (25 grams) daily. 2 Large level scoops of ProflamAid Plus (50 grams) administered into the morning and night feeds. We also would recommend a course of the BioEquus to assist with digestion. 2 spoons scoop daily 16g Daily recommended feed: we recommend the JT Johnson Natural Formula Feed either the EveryHorse or Elite formula, if the horse is a good doer then we would suggest the EveryHorse, you only require a small amount per feed and not other types of feed or additives are required apart from what we have recommended - 300-500g should be sufficient for overweight horses. If your horse is underweight, we recommend the EveryHorse WeighGain formula and you may need to feed 2.5kg per day. Always provide plenty of hay and make sure you hard feed is not wet, just damp bordering on dry. Continue treatment for 14-28 days and then contact our office to provide us with a progress report. If the case is severe, treatment will take quite some time, even up to three months, however 90% of all cases treated recover. Please ensure that once your horse has recovered that the Oxydane remains a permanent fixture this is your insurance against a recurrence of stringhalt. For further information please contact Hiform on Ph 03 9775 6422 or email science@hiform.com.au Please note the above advice has not been provided to replace veterinary advice, please contact your vet if the horse’s condition appears to be worsening.

Balanced daily diet can be an effective way of treating stringhalt.

Imbil endurance complex set to shine From page 4

Matt, his brother Brook and father Bob have shared more than 20 Tom Quilty Cup titles the sport's most prestigious annual gold cup event which was pioneered by R.M. Williams and his friend Tom Quilty in 1966. The family, who also breed and train Arabians, have long had the dream to create a purposebuilt endurance facility and this year that dream will become a reality. "There is no facility in Australia that is custom built for endurance purposes with many events being run out of showgrounds which are less than ideal venues," Mr Sample said. “The Sterling Crossing Endurance complex will have a 60m x 40m fully lit, undercover vetting area and a second turfed area of the same size alongside. “This will provide optimal conditions for vets to check the horses depending on daylight and weather conditions. “The facility will also offer designated camping areas for participants, the horses and support

crews, officials and volunteers. “We expect there will be at least 500 additional people in the area for the championship with many coming up to five days prior to the event to give their horses the opportunity to recover from their travels. “The economic impact of having that number of people here for up to a week will be significant and we hope to bring several events to the venue every year.

“Construction onsite has already injected over $2.5 million into the local economy as we have between three and 10n sub-contractors onsite on any given day and we've been committed to using locals. “We are delighted to have secured a national event in the Mary Valley and we have no doubt that this inaugural event at the Stirling Crossing Endurance complex will put the

region firmly on the map as the premier destination for endurance events.” The July event will also include a 160km Australian Endurance Riders Association (AERA) ride which assists riders to prepare and qualify for the 2016 Tom Quilty Cup event. The event is open to the public and to find out more please visit www.sterlingcrossingendurance.asn.au

Riders take part in the NSW Combined Championships Pony Club riders from all over NSW and some parts of Queensland and Victoria have been busy competiting in the NSW State Combined Championships held in Camden at the beginning of this month. The event marks the biggest multi-discipline Pony Club Championship in NSW since 2009, with more than 780 entries across six equestrian disciplines. Being held at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park in Camden, the event showcases two Olympic equestrian disciplines of Dressage and Showjumping, as well as the very popular Showriding and Jumping Equitation events. For the first time, Combined Training has also been included in the State Championship program, where riders participated in both Dressage and Showjumping phases for a combined total score. Due to recent wet weather, the State One Day Event Championships were forced to be cancelled as destructive flood waters caused damage to the cross country course at the venue. Many Eventing riders will now compete in an Advanced Combined Training Championship to be held on the 9th & 10th July. Major Sponsors Horseland and Mitavite have provided excellent prizes and awards for successful competitors, as well as dona-

The Bicentennial Equestrian Park in Camden will be home to 452 horses, 436 riders and their supportive families throughout the competition. Spectators to the free event can also inspect equestrian trade stands. The Showjumping was the first discipline to open the championships followed by the

Showriding, Jumping Equitation, Dressage and Combined Training Championships to conclude. The 2016 Pony Club NSW Combined State Championships are supported by Horseland, Mitavite - Official Feed Partner, HorseWyse Magazine Australia, Macarthur Stockfeeds, Equissentials, Jojubi Saddlery, Starlight Browbands and Equitana Melbourne. The Horse Report

Utilizing the backup as a training move By TANJA KRAUS The backup is, for a lot of us, one of the most underutilized maneuvers that we can train. Let’s have a look at the backup as a maneuver to train in its own right and the benefits we gain from it. The backup can be used as both a strengthening and a suppling maneuver. When done properly, the backup causes the horse to load and use its hindquarter, stretch along the back and through to the poll, and, as we advance our backup, to supple laterally through the body. I train the backup in stages, with each stage building on the last. Stage 1 - The Cue I like to teach the horse to backup off a body cue, not my reins. This way I can use my reins for shape and direction during the backup later on in their training. I should be able to ask my horse to backup using no hands. The cue that I use for my horses to backup is I rock back with my hips and open my toes to cue the horse to go back. Stage 2 - Shape / Vertical Flexion

Backing up with no hands following my body, not my reins

Once my horse is understanding my backup cue, I can then start to ask for shape during the backup to strengthen and stretch the back and promote self carriage. I want to be able to adjust the horse’s shape in the backup between long and low and collection, and everything in between. I should be able to put the horse in any shape I want to. Here you can see me asking Xena to back in 3 different shapes, and you can see that my hand position changes so she understands which shape I am look-

Canter out of backup helps the horse load his hindquarters

ing for. Stage 3 - Direction / Lateral Flexion Now I have my horse backing off my body, and in the a shape that I can adjust, I can start to use the backup for lateral suppling and I do this by changing the path of the backup. I like to back arcs, circles and figure 8s with my horses. Backing in a curve really helps the horse to use the inside hind leg and keep the front light and supple. Bending laterally will also help your horse maintain his vertical flexion, and remain supple and

elastic during backup. Stage 4 - Forward. Finally I use my backup as a 'load up' into a forward - for example backup into canter. This really helps the horse to use his hindquarters and find a purpose for doing so. This exercise is like loading a spring or a sling shot - the backup is the load, then the canter out of it is the spring. This exercise helps the horses stay light in the front, and use that power they can feel in the hindquarter. Photos by Lu Townsend Horse 'Berrendell Shez Divine'

“As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The Horse Report

Problems when float loading your horse Are Float Loading Problems Really about Float Loading? Float loading is one of the most common issues I see people have with their horses. It never ceases to amaze me how differently everyone perceives a horse's behaviour. A behaviour that a horse owner has been happily rewarding the horse for all along can turn into a violent opposition when the circumstances are right. And by right I mean when someone is trying load their horse on a float and they don't have much time. Often times a horse will be resisting going on the float and evading by running over the top of the owner or trying to flee the scene and pulling the owner off their feet. Or pulling the ever classic standing there and planting their feet move. The horse will then be labeled as a "bad horse, disrespectful" and "naughty." But is that really true? Is the horse to blame here or does the responsibility lie with the owner to educate themselves and their horse properly? I believe the responsibility lies with us as horse owners to empower ourselves with the knowledge and skills necessary to help the horse. Most habits that horses have around people are for the most part created through their interaction with them. It really comes down to all the simple little things that most people ignore and don't take seriously enough. Things like leading, rugging, feeding, grooming and general handling on the ground have a massive effect on the horse’s overall attitude and behaviour. This is essentially where lots of problems are created, usually unconsciously.

Developing good ground skills with your horse will ensure you are better equiped to deal with problems

The owner may not even perceive what the horse is doing as a problem until they try to ask the horse to go on the float. Then lo and behold the horse now does everything the owner has taught the horse to do. The horse thinks: "Leaning on the pressure of the halter is ok so I'll do that first." "Well that’s not working so let’s try running over my owner as they always let me run over them anyway, so I'm sure they won't mind" "What?? I'm not allowed to run over the top of you when I'm feeling nervous! You can't change the rules now...I guess I'll have to run back to my paddock buddies at least they don't change the rules!" This may sound silly but it’s not

far off the truth. For many horses the behaviours are already thoroughly in place before people even get the floating part. So in reality the float doesn't create the bad behaviour

it reveals it! Just remember next time your leading, feeding, rugging, grooming your horse are you seeing what’s really going on between you and your horse?

What’s Happening OXENFORD GALA HACK DAY The Oxenford Pony Club will host a Gala Hack day on August 28 and the program has Gold Coast equine enthusiasts excited. "Many pony hack and galloway riders will be keen to compete for a win in an open at our event because if they are successful this will add to the number of open wins they need to compete at any Royal Show. "I know that riders work very hard throughout the year to prepare their horses and ponies for hack shows and I can guarantee that this event won't disappoint. "I am very proud that we have been able to attract well respected and qualified judges. In doing so we have lifted the level of this event to a day that will make competitors and their supporters proud. "However the program offers a class for almost everyone - from the dedicated Hack rider to the beginner child rider, and if you love to see beautifully turned out horses and ponies spectators are most welcome." There will be prize money to third place, trophies and pizemoney for Supreme and a memorial trophy for the Best Presented The Gala Hack Day is on August 28 at the Oxenford Pony Club. CANUNGRA SHOW The 2016 Canungra Show will be better than ever for equestrian competitors with an expanded horse program and the relocation of sideshow alley to a different area of the showground. Canungra AH&I Society Equestrian Chief Steward, Chris Ward, said the Society is very excited about the plans for the show this year. “It will be a better show for our horse competitors with more classes, particularly for the paint and coloured horses, and we will have PHPA 'Hi Point' Pinto classes for the first time,” Chris said. The show has been regarded as a ‘hot show’ because of the location of Sideshow Alley for many years, but this has been relocated to the other side of the showground to increase the safety of riders and horses. “"It is a big year for us and we are also expanding the show to the sports ground next door so we have room for more attractions and more classes,” he said. “The relocation of Sideshow Alley is something we have been working towards for several years but this year, thanks to a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, we have been able to do it. “We are looking forward to seeing lots of new faces at the show this year.” The program also caters for children new to showing with a 'Topsy Ring' for beginners in the rodeo arena. For enquiries about the program, please call Chief Steward, Chris Ward on 0413 724 638 or visit canungrashowsociety.org.
