EA Base Register your horse online now available free of charge for IQ competitors

2016 & 2017 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championship hosts announced Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce that Equestrian New South Wales has been appointed to host the 2016 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships for a consecutive year at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The 2015 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships, hosted by Equestrian NSW, is a finalist in the 2015 NSW Sport Awards, along with Equestrian NSW as a state sporting organisation. Equestrian Queensland (EQ) has also been appointed to host the 2017 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships. Dates for both Interschool events are to be confirmed at a later date, along with a venue confirmation for the 2017 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships.

Changes to IQ horse registration process There will be a change in the method used to register horses for interschool competitors commencing in 2016. You will no longer need to send in an IQ Horse Registration form each year. Instead, you will need to EA Base Register your horse online once only which is now available free of charge for IQ competitors. Please note: If your horse is already EA registered, you do not need to re-register your horse. If you are unsure, contact the EQ office on 3891 6611 or interschool@equestrianqld.com.au At the start of each year when you renew your membership you will need to tick the box that requests an interschool card for the relevant horses. You will still be allocated an IQ number for the horse & rider combination, so if there is more than one rider competing a horse please contact Christine on 3891 6611 or interschool@equestrianqld.com.au and an IQ number will be allocated for each new combination.

The Horse Report Zone 9 claims honours from page 4 The Champion Zone was awarded to Zone 9 with riders Tahnee Sullivan, Dani Altham, Mackenzie Peterkin and Cara Shirley gaining the most points for their Zone. The quality of riders was outstanding, making it a very difficult task for the judges who did an outstanding job in the very warm conditions over the weekend. For 13 & under 15 years Reserve Champion rider Teleah Lindsay, the long drive to Parkes was worth the wait. “It took about five hours to get to Parkes and it was extremely hot, but the highlight of the event for me was just having fun and making sure everyone else did too,”she said. Teleah achieved great results riding Bells Mountain Phoenix and representing Zone 22 at the State Championship. “We all just wanted to have fun in the ring and at the end of the day I received the overall Reserve Champion for my age group,” she said. The Pony Club Association of NSW would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the State Showriding Championships, also to the parents, friends and families who showed support over the weekend. The next event will be the NSW State Camp taking place from January 3rd-8 at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The Pony Club NSW State Showriding Championships are supported by major sponsor Mitavite – the official feed partner, NSW Sport and Recreation and local sponsors. Shane Rose has his sights on Rio Olympics The dream of representing Australia at the Rio Olympic Games is becoming a reality for Olympic silver medallist Shane Rose after topping the leaderboard in first and second position at the Adelaide CCI4* at the Australian International Three Day event. Leading into the event’s Showjumping decider, Rose was already ranked first and second after dominant performances in the dressage and cross country phases. He also had a five penalty lead over New Zealand rider Clarke Johnstone but with Rio on the horizon, it was important that he also produce clear rounds in the showjumping. Riding Virgil his round in the showjumping went according to plan and the pair finished on their dressage score of 50.80. Last into the arena was Rose’s horse, CP Qualified, and the pair knocked one fence which added four penalties to their score but it didn’t affect their lead and the pair rode to victory with a score of 49.30.

“I knew Clarke would be really hard to beat and we have about six Aussie guys that are here that I knew would be up there, Rose said. “I think both horses have performed very well and it would have been great to jump clear on Qualified but to run first and second in this field is what I was hoping I could do. “Before the event I said I would

be pretty disappointed if I didn’t finish in the top four. I have very competitive horses and I felt if I did a good job that we’d be close. “Coming down here I openly said here that this is where I wanted to qualify and get selected for Rio. The Adelaide CCI4* was an important event for Australian Eventing Riders and none more

so than Rose who is seeking redemption for the disappointment of the London Games where he was forced to withdraw from the Aussie team after his horse went lame. “I don’t think (the road is) any easier after this weekend, it’s just clearer and this is certainly the way I wanted to try and get there, he said. “All those tentative plans I put in place on where I’m going to go and how I’m going to try and get to Rio, hopefully now I can act on them and get there with everything firing and put ourselves in a position when we can win. “I know I’m competitive against anyone in the world on those two horses but I have to make sure on dressage day that I do a better job. Johnstone's clear Showjumping round helped him to solidify third position with a score of 54.10 while Olympian Sonja Johnson (Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison) finished fourth after a clear jumping round and finished with 59.40 penalties.

Organiser cancels 2016 Summer Horse Show The 2016 Summer Horse Show, (scheduled to be held at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre from January 22-26 will not be going ahead. Equine Productions (EP) which had invested heavily in the initial stages of the event, made the announcement due to insufficient support which made it impossible for the event to continue. EP have a 25-year history of commitment and experience in the equine industry and has been willing to invest in the Summer Horse Show on the premise that the industry would support the development and expansion of the event. There have been numerous factors that have unfortunately conspired against EP as a commercial organiser since taking the event over. The removal of the Grand National qualification for Saddle Horses and increased event conduct expenses are amongst some of the issues that have affected the viability of the Summer Horse Show. EP had committed to the objective of reinvigorating the Summer Horse Show into a wonderful platform for breeders and youngstock. These changes included: •Rewarding saddle horse competitors with high calibre international judges •Taking on feedback from previous years, EP reduced entry fees by 25 per cent and introduced an unlimited entry package •Reduced venue facility fees to a

flat per event charge •Created a stabling model that was more accessible EP also added in close to 400 classes to ensure that competitors had a value-for-money event with many classes to participate in for young and old and amateur to elite. Managing Director of EP Rod Lockwood is disappointed to be making the announcement. “We invested a great deal of energy and enthusiasm into this event, taking on as much feedback as possible, implementing changes the industry requested, and negotiating with stakeholders to our utmost capacity to be able to deliver what we thought competitors wanted,” he said. EP thanked those who embraced the event, from exhibitors, competitors that entered, the breed societies, sponsors and the media for their support.EP will continue to work with and support the committee behind the National Clydesdale and Heavy Horse Festival which will run 23-25 January 23-25 as planned and are excited that for the first time an international judge, this year Ronald Brewster from Scotland will preside over the judging. All Summer Horse Show competitors will have all financial contributions reimbursed as quickly as possible. EP invites constructive feedback and suggestions for how this event can move forward in the future. An online Feedback form is available on www.summerhorseshow.com.au.

Ubank wins IRT Jumping Grand Final Queensland rider, Merrick Ubank riding Alantinus won the IRT Jumping Grand Final in Adelaide, putting on a spectacular show at the Australian International Three Event which hosted the Equestrian Grand Final for the first time. The IRT Jumping Grand Final was also a round of the Australian League of the FEI World Cup and the prospect of valuable series points and prizemoney attracted the leading riders of the League to Adelaide. Ubank and his horse were the stars of the Final, producing the only double clear round of the class and their victory was the first World Cup win for this pair. In winning the IRT Jumping Grand Final Ubank also celebrates the third World Cup win of his career. First to go in the opening round, Ubank and Alantinus set the pace early when they produced a clear round that no other combination among the 18 strong field could replicate. Ten combinations returned for the second round and Ubank secured victory when he produced his second clear round of the day. “I had a good day,” said Ubank. “The horse jumped well and felt pretty confident. “I’ve been training well, a lot of people have been helping me and it’s all starting to come together. “It was a great atmosphere out there and I think that lifts the horses. “They come alive a little bit out there. We should try and have more shows like this.”

Chris Chugg battled himself for the minor placings finishing second and third with his two entries after picking up four faults in the first round with both Cera Cassiago and Cristalline. Both horses jumped clear in the second round but it was Cassiago who was the faster of the two which secured him second and Cristalline third. A further two combinations finished on a total of four faults - Brook Dobbin & Silvo and Kristy Bruhn and Jack and they finished

fourth and fifth respectively. The IRT Jumping Final brought the Equestrian Grand Final for 2015 to a close. Spectators appreciating the addition of World Cup showjumping and dressage to the schedule for the first time. It was an exciting afternoon at the Australian International Three Day Event and the IRT Jumping Final was the ideal prelude to the CCI4* Showjumping decider which was won by Olympian Shane Rose who also finished in second position.

Rodeo action comes to the coast Rodeo action returns to the Tweed Coast this month with the annual Cabarita Bull & Bronc Spectacular on January 8. The high action event, part of the National Rodeo Association circuit, is making it's welcome return to it’s initial home, the Cabarita Beach Pony Club Grounds and this year will be held on a Friday night. With all the excitement for the return of this event after a seven year gap, the word is quickly reaching far and wide. It is expected that there will be a great turn out of locals along with holiday makers, and supporters of the Cabarita Bull and Bronc Spectacular travelling to the grounds to soak up the atmosphere of the country coming to the coast. What was called “the biggest little rodeo on the coast”, this won't disappoint with three hours of non stop action with bucking bulls and broncs, barrel racing, comedy clown, Ian Bostock and friends, and not forgetting the important bull fight-

Diagnosing High Suspensory Disease By DAVID LOVELL BVSC This follows on from the Diagnosis and Treatment article in last month’s issue. High Suspensory Disease is one of the more common problems that we see in performance horses. More significantly, it is regarded as one of the most difficult problems to treat and manage, and very often, signals the end of the career for the horse, certainly at the higher end of performance. The reason it is so difficult to manage, is that the problem is caused by the biomechanics of the movement, or more simply, the way the horse uses its legs. This movement is inherent in the horse and will always be a factor while ever the horse is being trained and ridden. Therefore, it stands to reason that even if the original “tear” is one hundred percent healed, the same casual factors will again be applied and re-occurrence is very likely to occur. Therein lies the solution. As Albert Einstein reportedly said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different outcome!” No where on earth is this adage more applicable and relevant than in the management of lameness in the

Horse displaying symptoms of suspensory ligament problem horse. Nature’s powers of healing damaged tissue are amazing and it can reasonably be said that almost every injury or tear, will eventually heal. Our job as clinicians and managers is to understand the way damaged tissue heals, and then to apply treatment modalities that are designed to enhance and aid nature’s natural mechanisms. The reality is that there are no drugs that actually heal damaged tissue. Everyone is always looking for the magical miracle cure and quick fix, but there is no such thing. There are many different drugs

Nerve blocks in themselves can be misleading and experience is necessary in their interpretation. The greatest majority of all lameness will have originated somewhere in the foot, and so the lower leg has to be ruled out in the first instance. We would normally perform a low block in the pastern, and then another at the level of the fetlock. If the horse is still lame, then we need to perform what is called a “Low Four Point” block in the lower cannon. This rules out the fetlock area. Horse still lame - then we now perform a “High Four Point” block. If this block is positive, then we can safely say that the lameness must be coming from somewhere in the area between the fetlock and the knee. This would normally suggest that we either have a splint bone or a suspensory issue as these are the two most common injuries. Clinical judgement and experience must then be applied to separate the two, but is usually not that difficult to differentiate. We obviously radiograph and scan each case, but personally I will not accept a diagnosis of high suspensory without precise localising nerve blocks. Once diagnosis is confirmed, we can now commence treatment. I would expect the program to take about three months. Firstly, the horse is confined to a stall. As said earlier, it is the movement and action of the horse that causes the disease, so locking him up, immediately reduces the movement. We then apply what is called a “Patten” which is a very high heeled shoe that projects out the back of the foot approximately 50 – 60cm. This shoe supports the heel and fetlock and is high enough to take the load off the suspensory. There is rarely any real significant inflammation or swelling in the damaged area and anti-inflammatory drugs usually have very little effect. Localised injections of plasma into the area can be useful and may do that on two occasions. Once that has settled down, we will usually utilise a course of 3 – 4 treatments with shock wave therapy which are designed to stimulate a healing response in the focal area of injury. We feel that we have good results in settling down the lameness. The trick then is to return the horse to work applying a corrective shoe to support and stabilise the foot is the key. Each horse is different and shoeing must be tailored to the situation, but as a general rule, a wide rim egg bar shoe will achieve most of the aims.

available, and many of them have very specific uses but they must be used correctly and more importantly, in the context of being aimed at complementing the natural healing mechanisms that are already in place. Hopefully we can all now appreciate that there are two elements to dealing with High Suspensory Disease in the horse, (the same applies to pretty well every injury). These are healing the damaged tissue and then taking steps to change the way the horse uses his leg so that the same casual factors are not going to occur. That being said and realising that this disease is regarded as being one of the more difficult to manage, it seems fundamental that the most important element is in achieving a precise and exact diagnosis and High Suspensory Disease is very difficult to precisely diagnose. This is primarily because that in the majority of cases, there are no 433 Boundary Rd THORNLANDS definitive clinical signs. Electrolytes and the summer months By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist Š 2014

Sweating allows your horse to regulate his body temperature and sweat losses in horses can exceed rates of 12 litres per hour thesise vitamin C they do not synthesise enough and therefore when undergoing enormous stress require high levels. (speeds wound healing, gives tensile strength to connective tissue, helps activate many enzymes, speeds formation of new proteins, detoxifies substances from destroyed cells, helps prevent haemorrhage, increases urine production, a lack of vitamin C can lead to damage to muscle, capillaries, leucocytes, capillaries, erythrocytes, platelets, calcium content in the blood, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenals, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract and endocrine system). An analysis of the inorganic mineral ash that remains after the human or animal body is burnt by a Dr. Schussler revealed that it is primarily made up of 12 mineral salts: and that therefore these minerals must play a vital role in both the physical integrity and

proper functioning of the organism as a whole. Further investigation predictably revealed that the different organs and parts of the body were made up of different minerals, and/or different apportionments of those minerals. He therefore concluded that those different minerals an/or different apportionments were vital for both the integrity and functioning of those individual organs and parts. In 1938, Dr. Maurice Blackmore (1906-1978), an Australian Naturopathic Physician, devised a method that retained the symptomatology of Schussler, but employed small pharmacological doses of mineral substance (ranging from 4mg in the case of calcium fluoride, to 260mg in the case of sodium phosphate). ‰ Continued page 23

www.hiform.com.au

The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphorus. Minor electrolytes are iron, copper, zinc, cobalt, selenium, sulphur and iodine which are required in trace amounts. One litre of sweat contains approximately 10 gm of salt (8 gms of sodium Chloride and 2 grams of potassium chloride). ElectroPlus acts as a preventative from electrolyte imbalances because it is a buffered acid/alkaline neutraliser, electrolyte and mild diuretic formula. ElectroPlus contains 10 tissue salts they are listed below: each tissue salt has a key role to play, some of these are indicated: calcium phosphate ( cell builder), calcium sulphate (suppuration remover), calcium fluoride (tissue strengthener), potassium phosphate (nerve power activator), potassium sulphate (cell oxygenator), potassium chloride (congestion remover), sodium sulphate (problem fluid remover), iron phosphate (inflammation remover), magnesium phosphate (neuromuscular coordinator) , sodium phosphate (metabolic acid remover) with the inclusion of zinc sulphate (insulin utilisation, sexual maturation, sperm function, RNA production, retina function, white blood cell function, alkaline phosphatase utilisation and liver function). Hi-Form E also contains sodium chloride (a major component of the cations of the extra cellular fluid and will regulate the acid-base equilibrium. About 95% of the sodium which leaves the body is excreted in the urine) . ElectroPlus also contains the herb Uva Ursi which is used because of its urinary antiseptic action, diuretic action and astringent. Because the leaves are the only part of the plant used this herb can cause discolouration of the urine. Vitamin C is also used in the ElectroPlus for its enormous benefits. Although horses syn-

Sweating and the performance horse from page 22 In 1988 Hi-Form Equine began developing formulas for use in equines using these tissue salts as part of their formulation. Each tissue salt used in Hi-Form’s formulations are used for a specific purpose. Most commercial electrolyte formulas contain industrial or technical grade minerals/ salts which are very poorly absorbed by the equine. These formulas supply very high levels of these various salts at the expense of the animal. An outline of the possibilities that can arise as a result of prescribing minerals in large therapeutic doses, or in the wrong form is as follows; • A deficiency may be temporarily corrected or balanced but not maintained in the longer term. • A mineral deficiency may be corrected at the expense of a new mineral deficiency. IN PERFORMANCE HORSES • Cause of fatigue is a reduction in energy stores of glucose which forces the horse to slow down and use free fatty acids. • Body strengthening is a vital part of the training program, but the basic problem with body strengthening is the recovery time necessary to achieve biological response and improvement. • Short training periods with a gradual increase in workload is an excellent guideline. • Bone responses are increased by training stress such as remodelling and thickening and increased strength. ‘a chain is only as good as its weakest link’ • There are many factors that effect training: external, such as high winds, lightening,

It is important to manage the stress levels of horses that tend to sweat profusely.

heat and internal, such as injury/infection, the horse’s reaction to fight or to flee. • Extreme stress can cause a series of uncontrolled reactions such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, sweating and perspiration, smooth muscle contracting of the digestive system and increased hormone levels. • The immune system can be affected by a short period of intense exercise. • It is important to control the stress levels placed on the horse. • Physical exercise is external stress and it is essential to increase stress in small amounts so the horse can cope and adjust. • There is a Catch 22 scenario though and that is your horse’s body must undergo stress to develop and increase his/her ability to perform. As your horse becomes fitter the

range in which you can work safely becomes smaller, this means enough stress to get a training effect and too much which will damage the horse. As a horse reaches maximum fitness levels it becomes extremely difficult to further improve the horse without damaging him/her. Progressive heart rate testing is a safe reliable method of measuring fitness. A well balanced diet, a good daily supplement and an electrolyte such as ElectroPlus is an excellent way to manage high performance horses or horses that sweat profusely. The ElectroPlus is also now available in vetpacks. For free advice on balancing your feed ration and preparing for the summer months, contact Antoinette on enq@hiform.com.au or phone 03 9775 6422.

The Horse Report

Aussies compete in Cowboy Dressage finals Australians Tanja Kraus & Phil Monaghan recently;y competed in the Cowboy Dressage World Finals held at Rancho Murieta in California. The pair rode borrowed horses to compete in the two competitions, held over four days. Tanja and Phil have been promoting Cowboy Dressage via clinics and competitions (called gatherings) for the past couple of years and thought heading over to watch the world finals would be an amazing experience. Then they decided that riding would be an even better one. Finding horses proved to be a challenging task and even once horses were found, their plan fell through, so at the time of boarding their plane to head to the USA, Tanja and Phil were 'horseless'. After Eitan Beth - Halachmy shared a photo of Tanja's on Facebook, it was seen by Kerrin Hoban - one of the owners of City Limits Ranch in Watsonville, California. It is a ranch that teaches kids and adults horsemanship and rescues horses. Kerrin invited Tanja and Phil to have a tour and this led to dinner where Tanja and Phil mentioned that they didn't have

Tanja Kraus riding Triscuit

horses. Kerrin piped up “we'll get you horses”. Over the next couple of days the City Limits Ranch family pulled together to organise horses for Tanja and Phil to ride in the competition - Phil riding Smoky a rescued retired roping horse, now used to teach kids and visitors horsemanship and Tanja riding Triscuit - a quarter horse mare bred at the ranch, currently spelling, having placed in a working cow horse competition two months prior. Both horses are owned by Dink Evans - the other half of City Limits Ranch - and had never

seen a dressage arena. With less than seven days to the competition, Tanja and Phil began the task of introducing themselves to their new mounts, and developing a communication that was going to work in competition. Soon enough it was the day before the gathering and the horses were loaded for the 160 mile journey to Rancho Murieta.Competition day arrived and their first competition was the Top Hand Competition - an elite competition for Cowboy Dressage top competitors. The pair were rid-

ing alongside 30 fellow trainers, horsemanship practitioners and their horses. Phil and Tanja were both proud of their horses’ performances on the night and the scores revealing they were within 10 % of the winning ride. The next three days were the Cowboy Dressage World Finals competition, which saw both Aussies place in multiple events on their 'stolen horses'. Tanja and Phil are planning on returning to the 2016 Gathering and competing again but until then they will be running Cowboy Dressage clinics and events around Australia.

Riders selected for Pony Club NSW 2016 state camp The annual Pony Club NSW state camp has been staged at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre with a group of lucky riders selected from across the state attending. The NSW Pony Club Executive Committee selected a great range of high performing pony club riders to attend the 2016 Pony Club State Camp. A full list of selected riders can be found on the Pony Club NSW website. These chosen young riders aged 13-24 and their horses will have use of the facilities of the Sydney International Equestrian Centre to learn and improve their skills in Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Mounted Games and Advanced Horsemanship. The State Camp provides professional training and education for the young pony club members, with some of the country’s highest qualified equestrian instructors coaching in their chosen discipline. This year the State Camp included Peter Shaw as the Dressage coach, Jamie Coman as the Show Jumping coach, Sam Lyle as the Eventing coach, Jane Frankum and Sarah Venamore as the Advanced Horsemanship

Riders from a range of disciplines at last year’s NSW Pony Club State Camp at Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Photo: PCANSW coaches and Anthony Newman and Phil Logue as the Mounted Games coaches. Not only has the camp been about sporting

disciplines but riders have also had to demonstrate excellent care for their horse each day. That involved being responsible for cleaning out their stable, preparing feed, maintaining clean gear and presenting themselves well for coaching sessions. It hasn’t all been about horses either with the riders getting to know each other by taking part in the annual State Camp Volleyball Tournament and other fun social activities. This is a of professional instruction and a chance to socialise with pony club members from around NSW. The Pony Club NSW State Camp is supported by Mitavite official feed partner, Club Colours Direct and International Animal Health. For more information on joining a NSW pony club or to find a pony cub near you visit the state website on www.pcansw.org.au or contact: Leanna Haines by email: marketing@pcansw.org.au

How lateral movements help in any discipline By TANJA KRAUS At every clinic that I teach, we spend time going over our foundation skills. Depending on the focus of the clinic, we may take an in depth look at the foundation of our horse for two days. If we are working on 'Balance and Transitions' for example, we may go over our foundations, then look at the foundations with a focus on building balance and transitions, and then move on to core skills and advancing skills. Within the foundations, we include some of our basic lateral movements - shoulder in, quarters in and leg yield / half pass, turn on the forehand, turn on the quarters. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, how these lateral movements have helped all levels of horse and rider - no matter what their discipline. For the nervous rider - laterals provide a focus. For the nervous horse - laterals provide a job to keep the mind busy. For the reiners, we took our laterals and improved spins, lead departures and flying changes. For the dressage riders, we

improved balance, collection and engagement. For our cow event horses we used our laterals to shape the horse in preparation on the cow. Our trail riding horses now get to improve their suppleness and strength out on the trail. Our Western horses improved their gaits. For our riders, our laterals promote an independent seat, balance and isolating our body parts. By now I have had riders and horses from nearly every discipline at my clinics - and the lateral work helped improve the rider and horse for the next trip to the show ring, or out on the trail, yet we seem to either forget about laterals, or we put it in the 'dressage' basket, or we think our horse is not ready for them yet - start using your laterals as part of your regular training program - and watch the magic happen! TKH has available dates for clinics in 2016. Clinics cover all aspects of horsemanship - ground skills from basic to advancing, liberty, ridden skills from foundation to performance. If you would like to have a TKH clinic in your area, contact us via return email, phone 0412 592 033.

Lateral movements will help all levels of horse and rider no matter what their discipline.

Sunshine Coast RDA looking to hire out new facility The Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Inc, located at 2 Monak Rd, North Arm, mid way between Yandina and Eumundi in Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation providing equine-based therapeutic and recreational riding and driving programs for all members of the disability community. They have a dedicated team of volunteers who assist with these programs to allow the participants to enjoy their activities in a safe and controlled manner. Along with the volunteers, they also have a team of hard-working horses who are specially selected and trained to allow the participants to enjoy and develop their skills in a safe environment. They are an independent RDA centre, affiliated with HETI (Horses in Education and Therapy International), previously known as FRDI, Equestrian Australia (EA) and Equestrian Queensland (EQ), But are not affiliated with RDAQ or RDAA. In February 2012, they pur-

chased 24 acres at North Arm. The land was vacant and has given them a blank canvas to design and develop a Centre of Excellence for riders with a disability and for the Sunshine Coast community. In late 2013, thanks to support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Queensland Government (GCCBF), they were able to commence the earthworks shaping and drainage as well as the base for the arenas which was completed in February 2014 in readiness for the next phase of the overall plan. Later in 2014, work on the new outdoor arena commenced. The Diamond Grid base has been laid and the small gravel in-fill had been spread, which will

allow for exceptional drainage. The sand was next to go on and treated logs were put in place to contain the sand. A huge thank you must go to the Buderim Foundation Inc. who has awarded a grant for the purchase of permanent arena fencing around the outdoor arena In November 2014, a cheque for $100,000 was received from Steve Dickson, MP, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing as part of a successful "Get in the Game Get Playing" grant application.

This was the last of the funding needed for the commencement of the covered roof over the future indoor arena. In February 2015, the fencing was completed around the outdoor arena thanks to a very dedicated and hard working team of volunteers and in March the construction of the covered roof over the indoor arena had begun. The completion of the new Shade Roof Structure was celebrated in May during National Volunteers Week 2015, with a "roof wetting" Ceremony. So with all of these wonderful facilities available and a mortgage to pay off, the centre is offering their facilities out for hire. For hiring details, contact Matty on 07 5472 7280 or email admin@sunshinecoastrda.com
