State of Origin rivalry saddles up The rivalry between NSW and Queensland is set to take to a new stage in the form of the inaugural State Or Origin eventing competition at Morgan Park, Warwick in March. The state against State challenge will be part of the Davcar Horse Floats 2013 Queensland International three-day event from March 21-24. Event President Dr Cameron Osborne ( a Queenslander) said he was confident of a Queensland triumph due to the fact that a significant number of eventers come of the Sunshine State. The format will be similar to the Olympics with a team of seven comprising five competitors and two reserves with the team submitting their three lowest scores - the team which has the lowest aggregate score will win the trophy sponsored by Over The Top Trophy. “We believe Australia’s best eventers hail from Queensland and we’d like to prove it by offering riders from over the border a chance to show what they’re made of,” Cameron said. To sweeten the deal, the committee is offering a winner takes all purse. “We’ve got five-thousand dollars for the winning team and riders representing their State will have their stabling and entry fee costs waved. There’s also $1,000 prize money for the

best individually placed rider,” he said. “I think it will be a case of pride on the line and we hope this will increase interest in eventing and raise the sport’s profile.” Now in its fourth year, the Davcar Horse Floats 2013 Queensland International three day event has been growing steadily in popularity and extensive work has been done to improve the course. “We have new jumps and improved surfaces and every year we’ve been putting money back into the course,” Cameron said. “And in 2014 we’ll reinvest again to create even better facilities and offer even more prize money. “We have a dedicated committee and passionate supporters who want to see this event grow. There’s no reason why the Davcar Horse Floats Queensland International three-day event can’t be as important as Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne in a few years.” The 2013 event will also feature trade displays, carriage driving demonstrations, an exhibition by the Morgan Horse Society and a special elimination jumping competition. The magic of Cavalia to debut in Brisbane Australian equestrian lovers are in for a treat this year when the internationally acclaimed theatrical production, Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, comes Downunder for the first time. Enjoyed by more than 3.5 million people across North American and Europe, Cavalia is a lavish production involving 50 magnificent horses and featuring 42 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from all over the world. Created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia celebrates the relationship between humans and horses, virtually reinventing the equestrian arts. It has often been labelled `an equestrian ballet’ and is a spectacular and moving tribute to the relationship between men and horses throughout history, a dream of freedom, cooperation and harmony. In a fairy tale setting filled with poetry and emotion, the show innovatively integrates acrobatics, dance, aerial stunts, live music and equestrian arts. Under the White Big Top, a 50-metre stage permits the horses to express themselves in all their splendour, nobility and strength, often completely free. And even though Cavalia will be on its inaugural tour of Australia, the production has already generated huge interest - so much so that the producers of the equestrian extravaganza have announced an additional week

There’s action aplenty under the White Big Top to keep audiences enthralled in Cavalia.

Carriage driving heads to Tamworth By BOB ANTHONY THE days of a carriage and coaches may have long past but the interest in carriage driving in Australia is under going a slow but steady revival. The Horse Driving Trails Club, which covers north NSW from Tamworth north to Ballina, has been slowly building its membership as more people discover what club spokesperson Patsy Wicks describes as “ the equestrian world’s best kept secret”. As part of raising the sport’s profile, NSW Carriage Driving will hold a two day event at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth on February 16 and 17. The event will include dressage, a marathon obstacle course that will see competitors travel between 18km and 21km on tracks throughout the centre and another event which will involve participants driving in and out of a series of more than 20 cones. In October Tamworth will be the venue for the NSW Championships and in the same month, Queensland will also hold its state championships at Warwick. The February event will be a `trial run’ for the AELEC which will host a full competition event in November. Ms Wick said it was surprising just how many people who have seen carriage driving remark on “how they would love to try it”

The sport of carriage driving is coming to Tamworth’s AELEC for a two day trial event this month.

but weren’t sure on where to go to learn. “We encourage every one, whether you have a horse or not, to come along to our come and try days held monthly throughout northern NSW,” she said. “It’s a great family sport where everyone can get involved.” She said the sport was affiliated with EA and had a huge following overseas. In fact, one of the champion carriage drivers in the world is Australian Boyd Exell who is leading the international series which heads into the final round in Bordeaux, France this

month. For the Tamworth event, Armidale’s Jessica Meredith, who now lives and trains in England with Exell, has been advising organisers on how to create an appropriate racing eventing track at the AELEC. The Horse Driving Trials Club will hold a drive at Gunnedah on March 2 and 3. Evolving effective worm control strategies Supplied by Dr ANNE BEASLEY It’s time to scrap the old routine of worming our horses at fixed intervals around the calendar, and adopt a more tailored and strategic approach to managing horse worms based on real evidence. For most of us as creatures of convenience with hectic lives and schedules, this is hard to hear. But around the world, more and more reports of drug resistant worms are accumulating – and although the situation in Australia is largely unmonitored, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s here too. There are three classes of broadspectrum drugs available for use in horses: - the macrocyclic lactones or `MLs’ (including Ivermectin, Abamectin and Moxidectin), - the Benzimidazoles or `BZs’ (including Oxibendazole, Oxfendazole and Fenbendazole), and - the tetrahydropyrimidines or `THPs’ (including Pyrantel and Morantel). Most properties already have small strongyles that are resistant to BZs, and there are now reports beginning to emerge of ML- and THP-resistant strains. In addition, the large roundworm of foals (Parascaris equorum) and possibly also the pinworm (Oxyuris equi) are also becoming resistant to MLs. With no new drugs currently in development, it’s more important than ever that we prolong the life of our effective anthelmintics by reducing the selection pressure we place on these worm populations. First and foremost, find out which drugs are effective on your property so you are not wasting time and money treating horses with ineffective products. To do this you can run a faecal egg

Not a pleasant sight - Parascaris in intestine. count reduction test (FECRT) which assesses the effectiveness of a particular wormer by measuring egg count before, and 10-14 days after treatment. Reductions of less than 95% might indicate a problem with resistance. Secondly, worm less frequently! The goal of eradicating worms or completely preventing any infection is neither achievable nor sensible. Many properties still follow a six to eight weekly schedule of deworming which is far too frequent for mature healthy horses. Some horses are naturally more resistant to infection than others and require far fewer treatments per year – monitoring egg counts can give you an idea of which horses are naturally “low-shedders”. Use good pasture hygiene where it is appropriate as a non-chemical approach to worm control. For example, removal of manure on a weekly basis, harrowing or spreading manure during hot dry periods, or rotating pastures with ruminant species will all help to reduce the reliance on chemical worming treatments. Get involved in research! We are conducting some long overdue research at the University of Queensland (Gatton campus)

currently, and over the coming year, to investigate the presence of ivermectin resistance in both small strongyles and Parascaris equorum populations and also to look at the prevalence of various worm species present on Australian horse farms. There are a few ways that horse owners can become involved in the research. We are looking for people who are interested in running a FECRT on a group of 10 or more horses (or foals) on their property. If you fit this description, get in

touch with the principal investigator, Dr Anne Beasley, on a.beasley@uq.edu.au for a sampling kit to be posted to you. If you only have a small number of horses, you can get involved by sending in manure samples to monitor egg counts, either just once, or over the seasons to help tailor your own individual worming plan. The service will be free of charge while the study is running, so horse owners would be mad not to take advantage of this offer. For each horse, simply collect two to three balls of fresh manure, place it in a zip lock bag, then combine all bags into a second bag/container (Australia Post prefers double containment). Include some information, like age, sex and breed of horse, date of last worming and product used, and n email address/phone number for the results. Post in an express post satchel to: Anne Beasley, School of Veterinary Science, University of QLD, Gatton, QLD, 4343. A report will be returned as soon as the samples are processed.

EQUITANA Australia joins the fight to save Walers EQUITANA Australia is very proud to announce that it is partnering with the Waler Horse Society of Australia, to raise awareness of the plight of the Walers in Central Australia. The Waler horse has a prestigious history and stories of their bravery and the numerous times these amazing equines saved their rider’s lives have been documented in many publications; however, now they need our help. Today Waler horses run free in Central Australia. They are rounded up on a regular basis and sent for processing as pet food. When their plight was brought to the attention of EQUITANA Australia, the team decided to act and contacted the Waler Horse Society of Australia with an idea on how EQUITANA could help. Elizabeth Jennings from the Society identified how working with EQUITANA Australia could create a lot of awareness and encourage people to look at the Waler as a potential riding partner. The EQUITANA team then contacted Mitavite for assistance with the project and they came on board as a major sponsor, ensuring the Walers received nutritional care. EQUITANA Australia has called this project The Mitavite Waler Legacy - Australia’s History…their Future. The project sees six wild Walers housed with trainers of very different disciplines for 12 months. These trainers and their Walers will then come

to EQUITANA Sydney on in November from 710 and showcase just how far they have come in one year. Finding the horses and getting them out of their wild habitat was not an easy task. EQUITANA sent Sandi Simons, Elizabeth Jennings from the Waler Horse Society and a film crew to meet Don Childs, the man responsible for capturing and bringing these wild Walers out from the remote cattle stations on which they live. After choosing the best six types for the project, the next problem was how to get them to the trainers in one piece. Thanks to Prestige Transport, the Walers were all delivered safely to their assigned trainers. The trainers, who were chosen because of their high level of skill in starting young and unhandled horses, are: CHRISTY CONNOR from CC’s Equine Training in Taralga, NSW – is going to train Bill in trick riding. DAVID SIMONS from David Simons Training in Drysdale, Victoria – will train Gunner as a reining horse. ANNIE KESTERTON from Jindivick, Victoria – will educate Coronation to be a dressage horse. DAMIAN JUDD from Moore Creek, NSW has Rupert to train up as a show horse. MICHELLE O’NEILL from Cherry Tree Equine in Cooma, NSW - will train Digger as a barrel racing horse. WAYNE ARMSTRONG from Team of Four in Bambra, Victoria - will present Trooper as a

EQUITANA Australia is inviting the public to follow the horses’ journeys by ‘liking’ them on Facebook, signing up for the newsletter or just visiting the website to check the regular photos and video reports from the trainers. People will be able to learn more about the Waler horse and be enthralled at the transformation of the six wild Walers into remarkable and valued working horses. EQUITANA Australia believes the Waler Horse Legacy to be one of the most significant programs it has brought to visitors to date. Things to consider when buying a horse By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Here are some basic rules to follow when it comes to buying a horse. Never buy a horse that is lame The `golden’ rule, never, never, buy a horse that is lame. By lame, I mean clinically lame where it is obvious to anyone that the horse has a lameness problem. There is a difference - many horses have some problems but are not clinically lame, and in many situations, can be managed. You need expert advice as to whether these problems are acceptable and manageable and there are uses and places for most horses. Each different condition is situational and you need advice for these sorts of problems. There are only three future possibilities for a lame horse - it will stay the same, get better, or become worse. No one can know for sure. A horse that is obviously lame is useless. If the horse is lame, and you still insist on pursuing acquisition, you must obtain a precise diagnosis and have it fully evaluated, and then, do not acquire the horse until the problem has been fully solved and the horse is not lame. horse and why would you buy a problem? Ninety fiver percent of horses with the itch have an allergy of some sort and while ever the source of the allergy is present, the skin condition will persist. Itchy horses are a never ending source of frustration and you will spend an enormous amount of time, effort, and money in trying to deal with it. Yes, most conditions can be managed, but is it worth it? Itchy horses continually rub and damage themselves, detracting from their attractive appearance and they cost you a fortune in damaged rugs and equipment. Be very wary if buying the horse in winter as this is the time of the year that insects are less common and many horses will improve in coat condition. Never buy a horse that has bad feet Everyone has heard the adage, `No foot, no horse’. This formula has become a truism for very good reason. Paying strict attention to the size, shape, and quality of a horse’s feet is one of the `big three’ important aspects for potential new horse owners to consider. Yes, nearly every foot problem can be managed, but why buy a problem? How do you tell if the horse has bad feet? There is never an answer, and as always, professional and expert advice is essential. Sufficient to say that if you have any questions or doubts about the quality and condition of the horse’s feet, be very wary of pursuing the horse. Make sure the horse and rider `match’ By far, the most common mistake people make is to mismatch the horse and rider.

It happens all the time and invariably ends in disaster. The most common scenario is to pair an inexperienced rider, (usually a younger child), with an inexperienced or untrained horse. There is no hope for success. Horses love to be ridden and trained. They are, however, herd animals and must respond to a leader. In nature, it is the leader of the mob, in ridden situations, it is the rider. If the rider is confident and competent, and knows exactly what is required, then the horse responds magnificently and harmony prevails. However, if the rider is inexperienced, lacks confidence, and in particular, the ability to mentally dominate the horse, chaos is inevitable. A true `schoolmaster’ is one of the most valuable horses around and well worth a premium. Discussion of matching the horse and rider can go on forever and it is impossible to cover every possibility, suffice to say that it is by far the most important element in selection of a horse to purchase, and, as always, expert advice must be sought. Don’t buy a horse when you can’t afford it How much a horse is worth, is the subject of another section however, one thing is for certain sure, the `cheapest’ thing about any horse is what you pay for it. Horses are extremely expensive to keep and maintain and many people do not realise what the on costs of owning a horse are. Do not buy a horse and think it is an investment. The reality is, that you should only pay as much for a horse as you can realistically afford to lose. If your situation is such that you have a very strict budget before acquiring a horse, then you probably should not pursue the dream. This maybe a little harsh, but if you cannot afford to pay for expert advice at the time you are looking to buy, then in most probability, you won’t be able to properly care for the horse once you own it and any value that was in the horse when you bought it, will quickly be lost. Again, many situations are manageable but be sure you talk to an experienced advisor before buying the horse. Continued page 15

The Horse Report

Working to a check list avoids disappointment Always verify the horse’s performance record This is easily one of the simplest and most objective checks or pre purchase assessments that can be made, but so often people take on trust what they are told. It was once said to me, “Don’t believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see”and this is very good advice. Take the opportunity to confirm and verify the horse’s performance record. Do not take it as given what you may be told. How many times do I hear the statement, “The horse is training at medium level, but actually still competes at novice”. This is delusional and certainly does not add any value to the horse. Of even more critical importance, is to verify what the horse has actually been doing in the three to six months prior to being offered for sale. The best endorsement or warranty that is available for a potential purchaser is to be able to confirm that the horse has actually been in full training and competition in the period immediately prior to purchase. Be particularly wary of the horse that has been spelling, or even worse, turned out in a paddock for an extended period. Almost always this is indicative of some problem, very often tractability or lameness. Be very cautious. Never buy an overpriced horse What is a horse worth? The reality is that any particular horse is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. Unfortunately, the only objective valuation is what the animal is worth at the meatworks. Different people perceive value in many ways, but the cold hard facts are that there are only three, often very subjective, components to a horse’s value: `Soundness’, `Suitability’, and `Training’. Many horses are valued according to their performance record, and or, potential. Obviously the performance record is objective, certainly can be verified and clearly demonstrates that the horse has been capable of achieving certain results, thereby adding some

Matching a horse to the rider and having realistic expectations of what you hope to achieve with the horse will go a long way to avoiding disappointment with your purchase.

value, but nothing is ever that simple. (See section on Buying a Champion). Potential is valueless and do not be fooled into thinking anything else. What is potential and who decides what it is worth? By far the majority of horses are sold on the basis of potential and they are grossly overpriced. Be particularly wary of horses from professional trainers or dealers. This is not meant to be disparaging to such people, many of them have been, and still are, long time personal friends of mine. Buyers must be very aware that often this is one of their main forms of income. Many of these people acquire horses from various sources, give them some basic training, education, and preparation, and offer them for sale. These horses are being sold on `potential’. Therefore, this immediately becomes an oxymoron. Buyers should be very aware that professional trainers only achieve success by competing with superior horses. Rest assured that if the trainer really thought the horse had real potential, then the horse would not be offered for sale. Placing a `real’ value on soundness, suitability, and training is each a full subject on its own and full of an infinite number of variables.

Do not try to buy a `champion’ I have been very lucky and extremely fortunate to have spent a lifetime working with horses, and, during that time, have been blessed with having been able to have worked with some of the most successful trainers, riders, and horses in the industry, across most of the disciplines, including the racing and performance horse sectors. One cannot help but question, what it is that makes one particular individual more successful than another? I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that at least 70 – 80% of the success of a particular horse/trainer combination comes from the superior horsemanship skills, competitive ability, and intuitive instincts of the trainer or rider. Yes, there are superior horses and champions, but a lot of ordinary and lesser horses can be made to look very good, and compete very successfully, by a professional horseman. Without a shadow of a doubt, the one skill that separates the better trainers from the next, is the ability to turn horses over. Arrival at the elite level in any discipline as a horse/rider combination, almost always comes from having been able to constantly try out large numbers of individuals. This means that they must be able to move horses on. One of the special requirements to be able to turn horses over, is the

ability to be able to sell horses that, in the opinion of the trainer, have reached their potential. . This horse, that is competing successfully, will obviously be expected to achieve a premium price. Aspiring purchasers of horses, should well realise that they could well be lucky to even replicate a portion of the performance ability that the professional trainer has been able to coax from the horse. It is a rare situation that the new owner can reach the same level of performance, and even more unlikely that they will improve the horse. That is not to say that individuals should not carry on and purchase a horse if all their analysis and assessments indicate that the particular horse exactly suits their requirements. I am simply saying that a large number of the so called `lemons’ that people buy are horses in this category. The mere fact that a particular horse has won a ribbon or event under one management system, does in any way guarantee that that particular outcome will easily be replicated. Do not buy a skinny or poorly presented horse Purchase of a horse is a major responsibility and an enormous ongoing expense. Always ensure that the horse you are buying has some value. If the vendor does not think enough of the horse to have it presented in prime condition, what are you really buying? They will always give you a variety of reasons as to why the horse is like it is. Do not take the chance. Once you take possession of the horse, you are stuck with it. Poorly presented horses nearly always mean that the horse has some problem. This may be medical, or temperament, or managerial, or performance ability. Leave it and find another. Check all the basics Always thoroughly review the basics. Be certain the horse is the correct height if you are going to show in measured classes. Check to see that the horse will load easily and travel comfortably and avoid `scramblers’.

WHAT'S NEW REVOLUTIONARY BIT BREAKTHROUGH Intelligent Inventions have a proven record for developing new and unique products and have won nine prestigious international awards as a result. Their latest development, the WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) is the only horse bit in the world to win the prestigious Australian International Design Award. More impressive however is that riders and trainers alike say the WTP is a breakthrough and ideal for breaking in young horses. The jointed snaffle is the most commonly used bit today, however because it depresses onto the tongue, the point often is driven into the horse’s tongue and can result in pinching to a point of cutting the skin. It has been well-documented the nutcracker action of a jointed snaffle bit will constantly pinch the tongue and cause pain and discomfort, often encouraging the horse to try and move their tongue so it is either over the it or out to one side of their mouth which can cause extreme problems including breathing difficulties. If a substantial amount of pain is inflicted on and around the horse’s mouth, the horse can become agitated and fearful and also as a result may be more disobedient and difficult to control. The pain caused to a yearling’s or racehorse’s tongue by a linked exposed joint can also affect other facial nerves throughout the head. The WTP design prevents this from happening and also helps to stop head tossing, pulling, bolting, mouth opening, rearing and bucking and also prevents the horse from moving their tongue over the top of the bit or hanging it out the side of the mouth. The WTP bit is the only bit in the world proven to stop displacement of the soft palate which is another major breakthrough. Colt breakers and Olympic riders Blair Richardson and Peter McMahon and top show jumping rider Jenelle Waters are also big fans of the Winning Tongue Plate bits and are amazed at the difference they have made to their horses. CERTIFICATE III IN HORSE The Australian Equine Institute (AEI) and its Certificate III in Horse (Riding Handling and Behaviour) came about after a long search to find a course that recreational riders could attend that would not only give them the knowledge on how to start out in the equine industry but also to enhance the knowledge and skills of current riders and obtain a national qualification. Other industries have nationally accredited training for newcomers in their industries so the AEI spoke to experts from every horse discipline and horse riding clubs and asked them what they want in a course. Four years later the AEI now has the best and most up to date information and training to gain knowledge on how to ride, what to feed and how to look after horses. Intercept Group and the AEI have come together with accredited horse trainers and assessors from all over Australia to bring the best quality education and training available in the country approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority. Not only was this course designed for riders in mind but a big part of it was designed for non-riders, mums and dads, who have the tasks of buying a pony and have no idea how to feed it, bridle or saddle it let alone make it safe for their children. With all this in mind there is now a course for all horse enthusiasts from the beginner through to intermediate level and the non-riders. Over the next few years the AEI intends to also deliver many clinics for first aid for horses, how to load on floats, feeding, and extend on the Certificate III courses to the higher end Certificate IV Horse Management. For more information or see what’s on offer, call 1300 EQUINE or log onto www.horsecourse.com.au

The Horse Report

Expect more, wait longer, enjoy success By TANJA KRAUS I have a couple of horses in for starting at the moment. One is a gelding that I started about six months ago, he went home to grow up a bit, and he is back to get some further basic education before his ridden career starts. The other is a three-year-old filly here to start her ridden career as a pleasure (pleasure as in for fun, not western pleasure) horse. We had ‘first times’ with both of these horses. The gelding went out on his first bush ride, and being the first ride I have to be pretty forgiving in a lot of respects – I have to remember that he has never seen any of the stuff that I took him to today, with a person on his back. We struggled for a bit at a water crossing – the first time we went over it I led him across – it has a bit of a ‘dicky’ entry, so I was happy to do so, on the way home however he stopped metres back from even the water and made the decision to not go further. Now I took this as a premature decision on his part – we were well back from the waters edge, and he simply decided no – so we discussed it. I have had horses at that crossing genuinely scared and wor-

ried about it – and I'm happy to get off and lead them through – but he did not seem worried by it at all, it was just an argument that he felt like having for whatever reason, so I waited.

I asked him to try – that's all. I wasn’t necessarily going for a crossing, but he had to try – as in look, go forward, something to indicate he was going to give it a go. And with much backwards, sideways, I don't want to etc. He tried. And I stopped asking and let him rest. And repeat. After a little while we were in the water drinking, and then we were through – awesome. The little filly I have been on four times, all in the roundyard. I started with some ground skills and then mounted in my arena. We happily walked around and trotted in the arena, and I could see that

she was a bit confused about going around and around in the arena with no real direction (which most of the horses do, thus the reason that I like to get them out on trails as soon as possible). We headed out into the ‘big paddock’ (about an acre) to walk around, and she was so happy with that that we headed into the next ‘big paddock’ which includes hills and a dam. She was so happy to have somewhere to go. I think it is important to empathise with the horse – understand where he is at and where he has been, what he knows and what he doesn’t know. If you set the bar a little bit higher, but wait a little bit longer for him to achieve – you will both have a successful day.

AUSTRALIAN HORSE ACADEMY This `Cow Horse Clinic’ is the life time experience collected by Michael Sekulich over last 40 years, starting in Europe in his early childhood up to his mid teens and then here in Australia, from the Snowy Mountains to the open plains of north-west outback Queensland. “I have worked with and observed men from the Snowy Mountains and their way of horsemanship,” Michael said. “I can tell you, if you are fortune it to spend even one year with them, mustering the high plains of Mount Kosciuszko and running the brumbys and you did nothing else again, I dare say you would know more about horsemanship than your average rider. “There is many good horse riders in Australia, some of them are best in the world, but so few horsemen/women.” The Cow Horse Clinic on March 2 and 3 at Dalby: Day one - Participants will be shown how to set your horse for cow work, cutting, campdrafting, team panning etc using an electronic cow. Day two - will be live cattle training. We will teach your horse to soften and bend. Rodeo arena is under flood lights, some stables are available (extra per night), camping also available. Free BBQ and drinks on Saturday night. Booking are essential, by phoning 0401 566 318 or email info@australianhorseacademy.com.au In 2000, Michael established the Australian Horse Academy and were affiliated with Sunshine Coast TAFE providing nationally accredited Horse Management courses, written by him. Also about the same time, he developed a horse show spectacular, `The Rings of Fire’ where Michael jumped a horse through six to eight rings of fire, with and without bridle and with the horse blind folded. The show also included trick riding (by the best in Australia), flag drills by an all-girl team, sole performances of two stallions to a songs, whip cracking, Aboriginal dancers and much more. CARLOS TABERNABERRI CLINIC: Well-known trainer, Carlos Tabernaberri is passionate at developing a horse through a good foundation and not through the force of a bit to make him look the part. He believes there are no problems in either the horse or rider, just a lack of communication, understanding and trust. That's why he uses this gentling method, whether introducing a horse to the saddle for the first time or correcting an existing behavioural problem. It ensures improved performance and versatility, regardless of your preferred discipline. Carlos will be covering a broad range of areas, both on the ground and under saddle in his upcoming Moggill clinics in April. Riders and horses of all ages, disciplines and levels are welcome. Very limited spaces with horses available and fencesitters are also welcome. For more information or to book a space please contact Nicole on 0414 320 974 or email firefly2376@yahoo.com.au

The Horse Report Hair testing can reveal performance issues The Horse Herbalist’s founder, Angela Davison, pioneered a unique hair testing service in 1992. This is a non-chemical method of `discovery’ which aims to uncover the core issues in the individual horse’s performance problems/ illness/discomfort/imbalance. Once those core issues have been revealed and understood, a treatment plan is proposed with a tailor made Medical Herbal and Flower Remedy Mixture which will facilitate a positive and permanent healing change within the body. As cases are individual, please allow a minimum of two weeks. Once the hair test is completed, she will contact you to give you a verbal report discussing the results and proposed treatment plan. This will be a 15-30 minute consultation and a written Nutritional Rating Guide specifically for the individual horse being tested. Generally a combination of Herbal Extracts and Flower Remedies are given over a six week period. Positive changes are expected to be seen from the mid to latter end of initial treatment. Re-assessment with another hair sample at the end of Week Five of treatment is strongly recommended. Should the individual need further treatment, this re-assessment is absolutely essential as many changes will have taken place in the body and a different formula will result. Rarely does Angela find the need to treat in this manner for longer than 12 weeks, though nutritional changes may have been advised and other therapies suggested in conjunction with this therapy i.e. veterinary, acupuncture, Bowen, chiropractor, dentist, farrier, etc. What to send •Switch of hair (ideally from the mane) either pulled or cut close to the skin, dropped into an envelope, labelled with the horse’s name. •Horse’s stable name, sex, age, breed, discipline •Horse’s perceived problem, veterinary diagnosis and treatment if any. Any of your own thoughts, observations and horse history, if known. •Everything the horse is eating, including all additives. Mail to: The Horse Herbalist, PO Box 161, Ballina, NSW 2478.

See you there!

BONE POWER

Calcium Complex for maximum bioavailablility

Targeting healthy bone development and remodelling for horses grazing high oxalate pastures. Oxalates are found naturally in some tropical grasses and phytates are found in some grains. The oxalates and phytates bind to the calcium, making it unavailable to the horse, dramatically decreasing the calcium available. If deficiencies continue, the horse will take the calcium needed for heart and muscle from the bones, leading to de-mineralisation. This can cause swelling of the facial bones, lameness, weight loss and dental problems. When grazing tropical grasses such as kikuyu, buffel, pangola, setaria, stargrass and panics it is recommended that horses receive daily calcium supplementation. Vitamite Bone Power™ is a palatable, high-dose Calcium Supplement, prepared using advanced complexing technology to optimize calcium bioavailability. This protects the calcium during the digestion process and enhances its absorption across the intestinal wall, improving its bioavailability.

Trace Minerals 1% Magnesium 3% Fat 5% Phosphorus 18% Calcium 22%

BONE COMPOSITION

Protein 26%

Water 25%

Bone Power™ contains a significantly large dose of vitamin D to enhance Calcium uptake and high doses of B vitamins, trace minerals essential for bone health and is formulated to restore the Calcium-Phosphorus balance in horses on high grain or high phytate diets. Vitamite Bone Power™ is available in 5kg & 20kg pails

Targeted Nutritional Support promoting health and wellbeing For further information about Bone Power and other Vitamite supplements, visit our informative website Mitavite.com.au or freecall MITAVITE® 1800 025 487
