Is muddy ground in high traffic livestock areas a problem? We all know how muddy, boggy it can get after good rain and where ever you have areas where livestock congregate, you will have soil pasture erosion and mud and lots of it. It's always the same - you have to repair and stabilise the ground and likely have to spend a fortune. Geohex is the product to solve your muddy horse areas and it is better for your horse. Geohex permeable paving system is the ideal solution for stables and arenas where drainage often becomes a problem. A self-draining paving system that reduces your ongoing bedding costs, Geohex is ideal for a wide range of equestrian applications and facilities. Geohex is non-reactive to solvents, oils or chemicals and non-toxic to humans, animals or plants. Geohex now being installed and trialled at Redland Vet Hospital to provide a solid stable all-weather surface in their outdoor holding yards, a new working horse arena in Lancefield, Victoria and at the new equestrian centre in Sydney. It is being installed in many horse stables, thoroughfares, paddocks, gateways and yards as a permanent solution around the country. Geohex is ideal as a horse stable flooring solution, providing a stable base for the footing from sinking into the soil below, while in no way hindering drainage. The result is a permanent stable base for the footing that also drains well and reduces soil compaction, therefore reducing maintenance time. The product demonstration at the Mullumbimby Agri Show in November was a big success and put to the test with rain on the Saturday showing the product’s practical purpose. Horse owners' responses to the Geohex product has been 100% positive. For further information contact Martyn on 0409 151 345 or email mh.agency@hotmail.com

Five tips to creating calm in the silly season By JANE FAULKNER Director, Equine Assisted Therapy Australia Christmas is just a few weeks away and everything is ramping up, the weather, the crowds, and stress levels. So here are five ways to help you navigate this time calmly and joyfully:

1.Take time out for yourself regularly- grab a cup of tea or cool smoothie outside and allow yourself 10 minutes to sit and enjoy your drink. Believe it or not 5-10 minutes to take stock and relax actually makes you more productive. It gives you time to slow down, organise your thoughts and focus on what needs to be done.

2.Prioritise- At the beginning of your day prioritise your essentials, this helps you to feel productive when you achieve them and also reduces your stress levels as you are in control of getting things done.

3.Delegate- we are not super human, create a list of what needs to be done and start to delegate. Not only does this take the pressure off you, it also empowers someone else to help out and contribute to your family. It's easy to feel guilty about asking for help, however this is what being part of a community is about. Caring for and helping one another.

stress levels at bay- exercise helps to release the feel good hormones and reduces the hormones that contribute to stress. If you can, exercise with a friend and enjoy yourself, time spent socializing is so beneficial to our mental health.

5.Get enough rest- Sleep is so important, so as much as possible get your eight hours per night. Sleep helps our body to repair and restore and prepares us to face whatever the day brings. Remember what this time of year is about- it's about each other, supporting each other and caring for one another. It's not about things, things don't nourish us- they can make us feel happy, but, only temporarily. Also remember that everyone is trying to do their best- take a step back and remember that no-one is perfect, we all struggle at times and we are all doing our best with what we've got! It's relationships, helping others and feeling part of something bigger than ourselves that fulfils us.

4.Exercise- this is really vital to keeping your

Territory life agrees with singing cowboy By BOB ANTHONY TERRITORY life must agree with horse trainer/country music artist Tom Curtain - so much so that he has put a lot of what he loves about the Top End on an album of the same name. It's been about 10 years since The real life singing cowboy moved to the Territory from Kingaroy to pursue one his passions, breaking in and training horse on the large cattle stations. However when the live export cattle trade ban came into being on 2011, his livelihood came to a halt and while his music kept the bills paid, it was a burning desire to do something more substantial and as they say “ one door shuts another opens” and following that philosophy, he established the Katherine Outback Experience in 2013. The Experience allows Tom to combine his passion for training animals and singing with his extensive knowledge and experience of station life to showcase the quintessence of life in the Australian outback.

Tom Curtain and Brad Kammann and the animal cast of the Katherine Outback Experience.

Now together with fiancée Annabel McLarty, this unique tourist attraction in the iconic Northern Territory town runs from April to the end of October and can run anywhere from 6 to 10 shows a week. Not content to sit back and rest on his laurels, Tom and Annabel have taken the show on the road during the wet season around WA and this summer, the team will again head west but this time will tour through regional

Western Australia to celebrate the release of Tom's third album Territory Time, his first in 10 years. And while he likes to take some credit to the album, Annabel had a fair bit to do with it, keeping at him about his music and providing some of the inspiration for the album. "I was always singing a few songs in the shows at our place but I was lucky enough to catch up with fellow Aussie country

singer/songwriter Luke O'Shea when he passed through this way and we got together and talked about music and what inspired us," he said. "He asked me 'what are you doing musically' and gave me a gentle push and together we wrote Never Never Land, which is the first single off the album and the title track, Territory Time which came from Annabel's observations of how the Territory had its own pace. Now Territory Time features in Tom's travelling show which involved him showing his ability to break in horses, his skill with his own trained horses and dogs and of course his music. Having toured down Western Australia, Tom will be popping over to Tamworth in January for the festival before continuing his show tour back west. He is even planning a tour down the east coast with the Katherine Experience sometime next year. To find out more about Tom Curtain, visit www.katherineoutbackexperience.com.au

Speed can play key role in joint issues By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

up the limb from the force and weight of the horse are enormous. Particularly in the front leg, where the leg is extended well forward of the horse at impact, there is a tendency for the limb to attempt to bend backwards. Anatomically this cannot occur but the leading edges of the joint are compressed and often damaged. This is particularly the case in the knee and fetlock. The faster the horse is going, the greater the force at impact and

so almost all the lameness issues in high motion horses are problems in racehorses because of the speed. At anything less than maximum gallop, the tendency for the bone column to bend backwards does not happen and so called "chips" are very rare. (Please note that chips are almost never a sudden fracture of a small piece of bone off the parent, they are the result of repetitive cumulative trauma and gradual damage to the joint surface). The coffin joint is rarely affected by this form of load as the distance from impact to the extended joint surface is short and so leverage is minimal. The stifle also is very rarely affected as its anatomy does not form a straight line and so there is some cushioning of the impact and so problems are rare. So, knees and fetlocks are the joints most commonly affected but their incidence is almost exclusively in race horses. The majority of "chips" seen in lower speed pleasure/performance type horses are either there because the horse was formerly a galloper, or more commonly a result of Osteochondrosis Dissecans, or OCD, which is a developmental disease and has been present since birth. More often than not, these types of fragments take a very long time before they result in arthritis and in these cases, the damage is done because of long term instability and subtle movement of the fragment, resulting in irritation and damage to the joint. The low motion joints are the pastern joints and the distal two joints of the hock and unfortunately for pleasure/performance horses, these are very common

Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse

Degenerative Joint Disease, or arthritis as it is usually called, is common and devastating in the horse when it occurs and can be one of the most frustrating issues to try and deal with. In the horse, there are two basic types of joints, high motion joints such as knees, fetlocks, coffin and stifle, and low motion joints such as pastern and hocks. The distinction is due to the range of motion that the joint is capable of going through. The above listed high motion joints can all go through a movement of almost 180 degrees, but interestingly, they are only capable of flexion or bending backwards from the straight line when fully extended and load bearing. When the horse is in motion, these joints are flexed by their various muscles, (propelling the horse forward in the process), pulled out of the way and then extended back to straight out in front towards the end of the stride and impact. Impact is the point at which most damage to the joints occur as the concussive forces directed

causes of lameness. These joints almost don't bend at all, however they do have a small range of motion but more in a side to side or "circular" fashion and they are their function is to provide a degree of flexibility and gymnastic type movement for the limb. Characteristically they are surrounded by a very thick and heavy joint capsule which aims to stabilise the joint. The horse is obviously a very heavy animal, most often with a rider on top, and so there is an enormous amount of momentum generated well above the supporting legs during stance. These forces generated up high translate to a lot of potential instability in the relatively small support structure and tears and sprains of the soft tissue joint capsule are common. This then results in instability across the joint surface and damage to the cartilage leading to arthritis. So, every one with a lame horse wants it fixed. The critical element owners have to understand is that the horse has become lame because of the wear and tear of everyday use. The damage to the joints is cumulative and occurs over what is usually quite a long time. Surely it is obvious that if the causative factors are going to remain, a proper "cure" is extremely unlikely. The best we can hope for is that nature's natural powers of healing will be able to repair the damage that has been done. For this to happen, the most important factor has to be to remove the cause, i.e. stop working the horse, and allow healing to hopefully occur. continued page 13

The Horse Report

The Horse Report Understanding the cause of lameness is critical to treatment  from page 12 A change in the nature of the work is the very most useful thing that can happen. Racehorses that are retired and become pleasure/performance horses will in the great majority of cases, be perfectly functional. If the horse is already a performance horse, then a reduction in level and intensity of work can very often do the trick. Many higher level performers can be transferred to a more junior rider and become excellent schoolmasters. If the animal with a genuine joint problem returns to the same circumstances and use as before, it is fanciful to think that the condition will not recur. There are an enormous range of medications designed to be placed directly into the joint designed to promote the miracle cure. Most are quite expensive and if the joint has genuine problems, they need to be very carefully used, in conjunction with a proper management program to be of any real use. (Many times a lot of joints are medicated with some of these various products un-necessarily as the reality was there really was not a genuine problem. Of course these instances are going to be judged successful!). Most of them are masking agents and serve to moderate the inflammatory response that is going on in the joint and so allow healing to progress. IRAP is a potent masking agent and probably does not really reduce the inflammatory response. Its use is in the situation where the horse has some serious competition and

Understanding the reason for lameness will help in healing and rehabilitation.

wishes to continue work to that goal. Obviously masking the damage and progressing on is not really likely to produce a long term cure. Platelet Rich Plasma potentially has some moderating effects on inflammation and prospectively may directly enhance healing but again, management of the horse is critical and it is very expensive. I am not sure that the use of stem cells has conclusively produced the magnificent results some claim. Again, the source of the stem cells may include some hence unknown other "healing" factors. It is still a little fanciful to think that injection

of fresh stem cells into a joint is going to result in those cells "growing" into the damaged areas and replacing the raw cartilage. Probably they all have some effect, but if the cause is still present, little is going to change. Cortisone has been by far the most useful product over a very long period of time. Certainly it is a very powerful "masking" agent in that it suppresses the inflammatory response, and without doubt is the most successful product. It is very quick acting, powerful, and relatively cheap. Almost immediately, the "fire" in the joint has been put out and if the horse is correctly rested in conjunction, allows the bodies healing response to commence. Use of the product in the face of a lame horse without significant changes to the horse management is a sure way to propagate disaster, but if cortisone is correctly used, it is easily the best way to go As always, understanding the reasons for the horse to be lame is the critical element. Then we need to make adjustments and modifications to the way the horse is used. If there is evidence of chips, fragments, or reactive joint surfaces, surgery is essential to "clean" the joint up. This then creates a much more favourable healing environment and allows repair to commence. If the correct adjustments to training are made, and a logical strategic medication program introduced, many horses can return and have a very useful ongoing career.

NEW - Anti- Itching, Anti- Inflammatory Insect Repellent Red Healer is an Australian Company that specialises in the research and development of natural Canine and Equine skin products. Their innovative and highly researched product range of natural topical creams and sprays are scientifically designed to support healthy skin and coats in Canines and Equines. Red Healer is organizing a scientific trial to be conducted by the University of Queensland Gatton (Equine Specialist Hospital) on a new 'Qld Itch' natural spray, to support their application for registration with the APVMA. Qld Itch is a common genetic seasonal hypersensitive skin disorder that occurs as a result of a reaction to insects such as midges. Red Healer's Equine Spray is an Australian first, in that it uniquely combines insect repellence with anti-itching (anti-pruritic) and anti-inflammatory constituents. In addition to this exciting new product for horses , Red Healer are sponsoring a trial of a new natural spray to treat a severe form of Sarcoptes Scabiei Mange which is now threatening the majority of wombats in Australia. Sarcoptic Scabiei causes a range of skin problems in the wombat (and Canines) which develop into a life threatening systemic disorder. Preliminary trials have been very promising and the Tasmanian AEC, DPIWE and the APVMA have all approved a scientific trial to begin. The Horse Report

Determining how much hay to feed By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Dip. Nut. Š 2017

Page 14

Horses need to eat a minimum of 1-1.5% (on a dry matter basis) of their body weight in roughage per day just to keep their gut happy and healthy.

equine diet and horses really should consume approximately 1.5 to 3% of their body weight on a daily basis, it is recommended that at least half of horse's diet should be roughage in the form of hay or pasture. The equine gastrointestinal system is easily upset and if sudden changes are made in the diet it can definitely increase the risk of colic and other digestive issues. Many parts of Australia experience low rainfall, and subsequently, very poor pasture growth. When the weather gets cooler, we are getting a lot of questions from horse owners with little or no pasture, on how best to replace the grass component of

their horse’s diet. The choice of possible hay types, given the current season, may be more down to availability than any other factors, but where available, good quality pasture/meadow/grass hay is normally a good starting point. No matter what sort of hay you can get (and provided your horse or pony doesn't have any additional issues affecting hay type/consumption), the guidelines around amounts generally follow the same rules. Here is a quick guide to the main questions. How much hay should I feed? Horses need to eat a minimum of 1-1.5% (on a Dry Matter basis) of their body weight in

roughage per day just to keep their gut happy and healthy. Majority of hays contain around 85-90% dry matter. Horses will typically consume between 2-2.5% of their body weight overall each day as a combination of pasture, hay and hard feed (though we have all come across some notable ponies who are out to set the record for more). Ideally, most horses and ponies should receive 70% roughage (or more) as part of their daily diet. To obtain individualised diet advice for your horse, please feel free to contact us via email on science@hiform.com.au or phone our office on 1300HIFORM

www.hiform.com.au

The question 'what is the right amount of hay for my horse and how should I feed it?' is often asked. Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage, within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse's digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. We suggest feeding a feed that is not wet or soaked because this does not encourage the normal process at the point of the mouth and the mouth is the first contact your horse makes with his feed. If you are using supplements you will be required to dampen the feed but this means damp bordering on dry, not wet or soaked. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. Take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a Safeway or Coles shopping bag, not very big. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45 L. We know quite a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract and it does seem a little bit out of whack. But in the wild as nature had intended, the horse will survive extremely well because he or she is not expected to ingest large amounts of feed at one time but rather is out grazing continually moving around stopping to rest when required, to drink and sleep. Roughage is undoubtedly the most important basis of the

Wolf teeth and what to do with them By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Wolf teeth, are often a question of concern in owners of young horses. The general consensus is that your young horse should have them removed before breaking. However, I will outline exactly why this thought process exists and why it isn’t always the best course of action. Firstly, what are wolf teeth and why do they exist in our horses? Wolf teeth are the remains of the ancient horse’s first premolar. Ancient fossils tell us that horses used to have seven molars with which to grind. This is attributed to the fact that the horse used to survive primarily in forest landscapes and eat bush-like food, much more like goats and sheep. When they migrated onto the plains and started consuming rougher grasses, their molars compensated by becoming bigger and flatter- making it easier to grind the rough grasses of their new landscape. Their first premolar became somewhat obsolete and today’s tiny wolf tooth is the result of this evolvement. Nowadays the wolf tooth pokes through just in front of the horse’s first premolar by the age of one and they are completely useless to the horse’s masticatory needs. About 70% of horses will get wolf teeth, sometimes two (bilateral), sometimes only one (unilateral). They can be found most often in the upper jaw, but the occasional horse will also develop them in their lower jaw, however, this is much more rare. Blind wolf teeth refer to wolf teeth that develop under the gum and never erupt.

So, why are these little teeth a problem and what will your dentist do about them? The consensus up until now has been to remove all wolf teeth in bitted horses. Wolf teeth are sensitive teeth, sitting in innervated gum and often with very little root holding them in place. In fact, if wolf teeth are not extracted, a lot of wolf teeth will eventually fall out around the age of 10, give or take. The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit. When a bit is in the horse’s mouth, it shouldn’t touch the premolars unless pulled dramatically back in the mouth. Racing and polo stables tend to routinely remove all wolf teeth before breaking due to the nature of the sport- involving quite hard hand-to-mouth contact which can pull the bit back so as to contact the teeth. In pleasure and other sport horses, however, a new approach is slowly being adopted. When any tooth erupts in the horse’s mouth, the longer it has to erupt, the easier and kinder it is to extract. For example, pulling a molar out of a five-year-old will be a much bigger and intrusive job than pulling it out of a 25-year- old. The same principle exists for wolf teeth and it is this concept that is making some qualified dentists rethink the previous ‘extract-every-wolf-tooth’ practise.

The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit, hence why they are requested to be removed.

Every horse is different and every wolf tooth is different. In today’s equine dentistry world, the phrase ‘less-is-more’ is being practised increasingly often. As with the grinding of the sharp points, the less your dentist can intrude with the horse’s natural grinding surface, the better. Remembering that this industry is relatively young, new information and concepts are being discussed and researched all the time. Therefore, what was once the assumed practice of pulling wolf teeth out of every horse is now being replaced by a case-by-case analysis. If a young horse is going to be broken and the impact of their wolf teeth is negligible in regards to the contact this horse will have with the bit, then leaving the wolf teeth a little longer will only make the entire process less invasive for the horse. Especially if the horse is likely to be broken, then left for a while, less is definitely more when it

comes to extracting teeth from a young horse’s mouth. While it is a known consequence that wolf teeth can affect the ridden horse, more often then not their removal can be left until a slightly older age, by which time the teeth will be fully erupted and relatively easy to remove. This is something I discuss with each individual owner, explaining the pros and cons of both courses of action and in most cases owners are happy to leave the tooth to mature a bit more. A young horse should be seen by a qualified dentist every six months, at which point the state of the wolf teeth in question, the amount of work the horse is doing, and the behaviours of the horse under saddle are all reevaluated. Dentistry is now more than ever an industry of horsemen and women evaluating the best course of action for your individual horse. There is no hard and fast answer when it comes to wolf teeth, just many individual cases that need to be considered as such.

Why we should look after our horse’s liver By ANGELA DAVISON - The Horse Herbalist The liver dominates the abdominal cavity but is it life giving and essential? With over 500 functions already identified the answer is a resounding yes. It's the body's chemical factory. It deals with functions concerned with the processes of digestion, sugar metabolism - therefore a factor in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. We're talking bloodstream purification, the biotransformation of many nasties, it neutralises poisons, it's the chief supplier and balancer of glucose - the basic fuel of the body. Whilst the liver is an amazing regenerative organ which works tirelessly, modern living practices affect us all, including our horses and can take its toll. Liver insufficiency frequently underpins signs or symptoms of disease or discomfort therefore it's important to help the liver to function at its best. To do this it is suggested that a herbal liver tonic is used to tone before detoxing as detoxing can be an uncomfortable process. In most cases, once the liver is toned it's own innate detoxification function does the rest. A toned liver, if it needs more help in the detoxification process will cope much better and the individual can remain in work without feeling ill or uncomfortable. So what sorts of things may impact the liver? Things such as stress, environmental pollution, bacteria and virus, unclean water, drugs, insecticides - including border or quarantine sprays, polluted grasses, some weeds, some herbs, any trauma, lack of exercise or over-exertion, any illness, accident or injury, inappropriate feed, allergies/sensitivities and poison. Even though the horse may not appear to show any problems directly after any of the above indicators, there's every probability that it will exhibit any of the symptoms below in the following months. Symptoms include dull in the coat, temperament changes, lack-lustre performance, depressed, itchy, below par or not quite him/herself. Clearly these symptoms can indicate all manner of disease and if the horse is sick then seek the services of a horse veterinarian and a qualified horse herbalist. However, giving a three week course of liver-toning herbs will never hurt and could be considered as good preventative medicine. Generally it's good practice to give the horse a liver tonic at the turn of the seasons or a three week course before coming back into work. St.Mary's Thistle (Milk Thistle) - Silybum marianum - is one of my most frequently used herbal extracts in 30 years of practice. This herbs usage as a medicine was written about over 2400 years ago, and science today continues to prove silybum marianum's ability to protect and tone many organs, primarily the liver. The dried herb can be purchased from a health food store or a reputable horse herb supplier. Make the dry herb into a tea. This allows all the water-soluble constituents in the herb to be dissolved into the tea, therefore your horse's body can utilize it immediately, rather than having to go through the gut for absorption. Please do not purchase any human detoxifying products to give to your horse! NB: The above information is not to take the place of veterinarian's or qualified Horse Herbalist's advice. Queensland Eventing Season finishes Eventing Queensland concluded the 2017 eventing season, partnering with the Tamborine Equestrian Group to run the 2017 Southern Steel Group International 3 Day Event and Eventing Queensland State Championships. Over 250 horse and rider combinations travelled from as far North as Rockhampton and as far South as Mossvale in NSW, to be part of the first three star - three day event to be held in Queensland since 2014. After days of solid rain in the weeks leading up to the event, the first day of competition started on Friday with all CCI1 & CCN 105 entries being accepted at their first Horse Inspection. The Dressage phase followed with some riders in the EvA95, EvA80 and EvQ60 taking advantage of the long format and also completing their dressage test on Friday. Friday afternoon was the first opportunity the riders had to view the reinvigorated Cross country course designed by Ewan Kellett. Among the jumps sparking the most interest was a tree trunk the riders christened ‘the stick’, while photos barely do it justice, it was roughly the same height as the average competitor’s shoulder. The CIC3* riders were required to clear ‘the stick’ on the downhill run to the first water complex.

Brett Cantle riding Premonition to Victory in the Southern Steel Group CIC3* Class Photo Credit: Blue Ribbon Photography Cross Country Day on Saturday came with great anticipation, riders of all levels were excited to ride the course which included new jumps and sections of new course for every level right down to the EvQ60. The ‘10 minute box’ gave horses and humans alike the opportunity to cool down after completing the course in a day with a temperature of over 30 degrees. While several people required a change to dry clothing there were many friendships made and strengthened by the willingness of everyone to lend a hand. The adrenaline continued filled the atmosphere on Saturday evening

with a 130cm showjumping speed class. It was down to the line, but in the end it was speed class veteran combination Elizabeth Ballard and Bramley Star who took the top of the podium. The celebration of the days triumphs continued into the evening as riders and spectators gathered to watch live steaming of the Australian Riders in PAU, France. At last, the final day of competition arrived. All horses passed the final horse inspection and showjumping began with the star classes entering the ring in reverse order of places. The CCI1* class was won by Madison Simpson on Fairbanks

Casino who finished just over a rail ahead of Athens Olympian Rebel Morrow on Peter Fitzgerald’s QEB Supernova. The CIC2* class was close heading into the final phase with just over a rail splitting the first four combinations. The pressure was on for class leader Matt Gaske with only 3 horses before him jumping clear. Matt piloted Thymes Too skilfully around the course and despite one unlucky rail, emerged as the victor on a commendable score of 45.90 penalites. This left the CIC3* class with local favourite Brett Cantle in the lead on the stylish Premonition. Despite being the quickest on the course he entered the arena with less than 5 penalties in hand. With the whole crowd riding with him, Brett rode the mighty chestnut stallion to victory adding just 3 time penalties to his score. As the riders prepared for the champagne podium there was much reflecting on the weekend. It was great to hear about all the fun everyone had and the excitement with which the New South Wales riders were already planning their return to Queensland in 2018. Equestrian Queensland would like to congratulate the huge team involved, from organisers and officials to volunteers and sponsors, in bringing the event to life.

The Horse Report

It's the little things that matter the most By TANJA KRAUS When it comes to horses, its the little things that make the biggest difference in their training program. Sometimes it is easy to overlook that the times we spend with our horses doing the 'day to day' care is often the time we are adding to, or undoing their training. There is a physical part of the training process of course - the horse must mentally understand an exercise, he must be physically able to perform the exercise, he must be fit enough to perform the exercise, and he must understand the cue to perform the exercise. So how does something simple, like leading a horse from A to B, make a difference to his maneuvers in the arena ? How our horse sees us, relates to us and respects (or disrespects) us, has a direct correlation to his performance under saddle. If our horses don't respect us enough to lead well, or stand still while being brushed, or mounted, then how can they respect us enough to do an exercise on cue? How much effort are they really going to be putting into a maneuver if they don't see us in a respectful way? As an example; your boss at work may ask you to do something and it is your job to perform the required task but if you don't

respect your boss, it is unlikely that you are going to 'go the extra mile' or 'add polish' to the task. If you have realized the benefit to you of performing each task at work well, despite your level of respect for the boss, then this doesn't apply to you but a lot of people don't make that connection and our horses certainly don't. We also fall into the trap of not investing in teaching our horses how we expect them to behave while we are doing these day to day tasks.

JOANIE NOT JUST A PONY! The perfect book for horse mad kids Joanie, Not Just a Pony is a children's book with a special message. The book has been written by Tanja Kraus and beautifully illustrated by Deborah Hatley, and follows the story of Joanie, a pony who compares herself and her abilities to George the Horse. Joanie doesn't think she has any special gifts until she meets TJ, a very curious dog, who points out that she has special abilities and gifts that George doesn't. The book sends a message to kids to find their own unique abilities, instead of comparing themselves to others. “Deb and I are passionate about the message this book sends to kids,” Tanja said. “With unlimited ways our children can 'compare' themselves via social media, magazines and advertising, putting photos up to gain 'likes', it is easy for a child to feel as though they are not as 'good enough'. This book helps children understand to look for their own uniqueness and celebrate it. “Your support of this book means that Deb and I can continue on with the next books in the series, all of which will contain a special message for kids, helping them navigate the issues they face today. “Any age child is going to love this book, with its rhyming script and bright and colourful illustrations. It's also perfect for those 'horse mad' kids, as it is one of the few horse-themed books of its kind.” A GO Fund me platform has been opened to fund the publication of the book, via pre-purchasing. All books sold will be shipped directly to the purchasers upon our receipt of the book. Book should be due for shipping now, in time for Christmas. Instead of investing in teaching our horses to lead, we would rather spend time teaching them the tasks in the arena, instead of teaching them to stand still, we would rather hurry up and go on a trail ride. Next time you are doing the 'day to day' with your horse, have a look at how he is conducting himself within basic tasks, and ask - is this as good as I would like it? Here is a video link (less than 2 minutes) that explains how I like my partnership horses to conduct themselves while I'm leading them. https://youtu.be/QXOJAZlC4kI

The Horse Report

A Legacy of Legends comes to Australia A Legacy of Legends is a continuation of what Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance taught and understood about horses. While Ray is widely considered the greatest and most influential horseman of all time, he was always quick to give the credit to Tom. “Tom told the horse’s side of the story,” Ray said in an interview not long after Tom’s passing. “He knew what the horse was going to do before the horse knew it. I’d never seen anything like it and I’ve never met anyone since who understands the horse the way Tom did. He had something truly special.” Together Tom and Ray changed the horse world but with the loss of Ray in 2009 there were concerns about how to preserve their legacy and assure that the extraordinary gift they had was passed on. The Legacy of Legends bi-annual Australian gathering brings together some of today’s best examples of what Tom and Ray started, and through the scholarship program, the learning will continue and the lessons these two legends taught will never be forgotten. Like Tom and Ray, who were always thinking about how they might make it easier or better for the horse, A Legacy of Legends offers others the encouragement and understanding to keep searching too. With an action packed program led by Master Horseman Buck Brannaman which includes colt starting, horsemanship, ranch roping and dressage. Traders will be available for a spot of post Christmas shopping as well as demonstrations by Australian and visiting horsemen including Ray’s own grandson Jaton Lord. This will be held in Tamworth. For tickets, go to www.entertainmentvenues.com.au/events/5 08/A_LEGACY_OF_LEGENDS/ Tom Dorrance Although he is the man most credited with bringing kindness and understanding to the horse world, Tom Dorrance never sought fame or fortune. Born in 1910 and raised on his family's Crow Creek ranch outside of Enterprise, Oregon, he grew up in a time and place where horses were a necessity. “Ever since I could remember I tried to get along with horses,” said Tom who stood 5'6" and never weighed more than 150 pounds. “I wasn't big enough to manhandle them.” So he learned to approach the horse as an equal and to look at things from the horse's point of view. To do that he said, “You have to/get yourself right inside the horse and feel exactly what is going within that animal.” It was a radical notion, this touchy-feely stuff, and there were plenty of sceptics at first. But it worked so well for Tom that word began to spread. At first it was just

friends and neighbours who sought his advice. He had a local radio show and was a 4-H leader, as well as president of the Wallowa County Stock growers in the mid1950s. By the time he sold the ranch in 1960 and started out in a travel trailer to see the country, he was already being referred to as the “horse's lawyer.” Tom continued using his techniques, advocating for the horse on ranches throughout Oregon, Nevada and California. “I helped horses with their people problems,” he said. One such horse was Hondo and his problem was a cowboy named Ray Hunt. Throughout his life Tom shared his understanding of horses with many others who sought his wisdom. He charged little or nothing, believing he gained as much from each experience as those who came seeking his help. He had an exceptional memory and though he may have preferred the company of horses to people, he never forgot a person’s name. No matter how brief or how mundane the circumstances might have been, Tom could cross paths with a person 40 years after first meeting them and still recall their name and every detail of the initial encounter. He was fond of riddles and strings tricks. Children and dogs gravitated to him. Tom married wife Margaret in 1966. They lived simply and frugally, never capitalizing on the “natural horsemanship” movement. Others may have made money at it, but to Tom the time spent with horses was reward enough. Still, his contribution did not go unnoticed. His book, True Unity: Willing Communication Between Horse and Rider, edited by Milly Hunt Porter, has been in continuous print for nearly 30 years. Recently a new book was published as well; Tom Dorrance, More Than A Horseman, by Margaret Dorrance and John Saint Ryan. In 1994, the National Reined Cow Horse Association honoured Tom with “The Vaquero Award.” The following year, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, with its Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award, recognized Tom as a person whose lifestyle exemplified the ideals of the American West. In 1999, Tom received the Lavin Cup from the American Association of Equine ractitioners for his extraordinary compassion for horses and his dedication to their welfare. Tom spent the last years of his life with Margaret on his brother Bill's ranch near Salinas California. B ill himself was a noted horseman, whose expertise with a rawhide reata is legendary. Bill Dorrance's knowledge of horses, cattle, ranch roping and rawhide braiding is put forth in the book True Horsemanship Through Feel, co-authored with Leslie Desmond, and in the video Four Strands of Rawhide: The Making of a Reata, with Randy Rieman. If praised for his abilities with horse or rope, Bill would shrug it off and say his younger brother Tom was better. But Tom was just as quick to say the same about Bill. Both men lived into their 90s and remained actively involved in ranching and horses. Through their patience, keen observations and quiet

humility, these two Wallowa County brothers helped redefine how we relate to horses. And as anyone who had the privilege to ride with either man will tell you; their lessons were not simply about horses, but about life itself. Ray Hunt. Born in 1929 and raised on a farm in Mountain Home, Idaho, Ray hunt grew up with hard work and horses. “We put crops in the ground with horses, and we took them out with horses,” he said. “We worked until the ground froze. When the ground thawed we ploughed again.” Stuck behind a plough, Ray longed to be a cowboy. Finally, at the age of 20 he left the family farm to fulfil his lifetime ambition. After more than a decade buckarooing in Oregon and Nevada, Ray sought Tom Dorrance’s help with a troubled horse named Hondo. “I was a wreck going somewhere to happen, like a Charlie Russell painting. Then I met Tom and he saved my life,” he said. Armed with Tom’s principals and a determination to make “breaking” horses a thing of the past, Ray hit the road. He staked his life and his livelihood on the notion that horse training didn’t have to be a battle for dominance. Years before anyone called it “natural horsemanship.” Long before “horse whispering” became big business, Ray Hunt was out there in an old pickup with a two-horse trailer, hoping to make enough gas money to get him to the next fairgrounds. “I didn’t see any commercial value it. If I had, I probably wouldn’t have done it,” he said. The horse world didn’t exactly welcome him with open arms. “I was working with the mind and a lot of people didn’t want to believe the horse had a mind. Get a bigger bit. Get a bigger stick. That was their approach,” Ray said. At Ray’s clinics, spectators watched as untouched colts were saddled and ridden for the first time with hardly a buck. In a matter of days, the young horses were ready to go to on the “payroll,” meaning they had enough faith in their riders and had learned enough of the rudiments to be a useful mount. In this atmosphere of trust and understanding, with no hobbles or snubbing posts, no external devices, except for the now widely imitated orange flag; it was hard to see what Ray was doing to get such extraordinary results. Accused of using ringers, drugging horses, even hypnotizing them, Ray laughed it off and kept going. From the beginning he was direct, intimidating and unapologetic about it. But horses everywhere are better off for the approach Ray Hunt popularized and the clinic industry he spawned. For more, visit www.rayhunt.com

The Horse Report

Want to join a pony club? Pony Club NSW is a not-for-profit organization invested into the development of horse riding in NSW through targeting grassroots, and elite development programs, competitions and education programs. It exists to encourage horsemanship amongst its members, to provide appropriate coaching and competition, and to raise awareness of sportsmanship and citizenship of its members. The main objectives are: * encourage young people to ride and learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding * provide instruction on riding and horsemanship and to instill in members proper animal care * promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self discipline So if you are looking at joining pony club in 2018 there are many pony clubs throughout NSW (and around the country) where you can find out more.

One is the Murwillumbah Pony Club based at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. It has great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors, and friendly helpful members. Rally days, clinics or gymkhanas are held most Sundays along with social functions, fundraising events and an end of year trophy presentation. The Murwillumbah Pony Club holds an annual three day camp in January. The kids get to meet new friends from throughout the Northern Rivers, learn valuable skills in all disciplines from instructors, play games not only on horseback but also on foot with their new friends. All meals are catered for and there are stables to keep your horse safe. Bookings and payments are required prior to the event. For further information contact President Glenda Bowkett 0412 491 839 or senior instructor Paula Anthony 0413 733 294

CABARITA BULL & BRONC SPECTACULAR Don't miss the action at the next Cabarita Pony Club Bull & Bronc Spectacular! Thrills and spills, Bucking Bulls & Broncs, Poddy Calf Rides and Barrel Racing will be on the action packed program in the centre arena on Friday 5th January. Plenty of seating will be available around the arena or take a blanket and be even closer to view the three hour program. Gates open at the Cabarita Beach Pony Club Grounds at 5:30 NSW time for a 6:30 start. Plenty of Cowboys will be showing off their riding skills on the Bulls and Broncs, trying to make the eight seconds time, just to get a score. Some of the best bucking stock will be there on the night challenging each rider with twists and turns to unceremoniously dump them in the dirt. Even the young Cowboys will have their moment in the spotlight trying to stay on board the Poddy Calves. Yep they all have to start somewhere. Not forgetting the Cowboys protectors, the brave Bullfighting Clowns, using their speed and precision distracting the bull. They certainly earn their keep. The Cowgirls and their barrel racing horses will be showing off their racing skills, aiming for the fastest times negotiating the three barrel course. Come and cheer them on, the louder the cheers the faster they go. Ian Bostock, the comedy clown, well what can we say about him ..... fun and laughter ..... he is sure to have you laughing at all his corny jokes and antics with his ever faithful sidekicks. His good old mate "Harry" has survived a round or two up against some of the meanest bulls, but he never complains. Live band performing on stage will entertain with great music to finish the night. Food and Booth facilities are available throughout the night. (No alcohol to be conveyed onto the grounds) Police and security will be in attendance. Adults $20, Children & Aged pensioners $10 (under 15yrs), Family $50 (2 Adults & 2 Children under 15yrs) All enquiries Chubby Everingham 0408 113 174

The Horse Report

Good health in your horse’s golden years By CATHERINE MCDOWELL As a keen and long experienced horse owner I am often surprised by the new generation's lack of understanding that an animal like a horse is an investment for life, as is our dog, child or dare I say it, a relationship with a significant other. How healthy we are in relationship to our world is very much reflected in the attention we give our horses and environment. A lack of "right relationship" results in countless horses (earthly resources) used up from competition or racing and then discarded to the “Dark Side” of the horse industrythe sale yards and a destination unknown. It is a sad fact of life that horses, being such a large animal require a huge investment of time and knowledgeable care, not to mention the cost of land nowadays. Horses are often seen in the most atrociously neglectful circumstances simply because hard times have meant no easy solution for their owners, abandonment seemingly the easy option. If we are in the privileged position of owning a horse, one of the best investments we can make is to ensure that they are healthy and trained well so that should you ever have to make the difficult decision to sell or re-home them, your horse is more likely to be guaranteed a good home. The land that you keep your horse on is critical to understand when thinking about prevention of disease. Soil type, the diversity of plants and chemical history is something that I feel is not well considered when looking at agistment centres or areas of land to buy when looking for accommodation for your new horse. If you can get this right you will be 99% on the way to preventing disease caused by toxins, poor fencing and inappropriate pasture. Horses are best kept on poorer pasture, with little superphosphate history. Dangerous weeds should be mowed, pulled or competed out with low GI grasses like phalaris and other native grass varieties best for the region. Testing pasture for deficiency or excess vitamins and minerals is a good idea. However, don't be tempted to "balance" the pasture with synthetic vitamins and minerals too quickly. The only pasture that requires this kind of balancing act is a high oxalate one, where providing calcium and magnesium rich feed is essential. Otherwise treating the soil first with soil conditioners is your first job! Feed supplementation should be done on an individualised basis using herbs and whole feeds. Mineral supplements can be useful. Vitamin supplements (Vit A, B, C, D and K) are generally not needed especially if they are synthetically derived. If you get a basic herb combination correct you can support the gut health and the microbiota which will supply a lot of the essential trace elements, vitamins and peak nutrition required for optimum health. Know your horse's body score and learn to read a healthy strong body type from a pudgy toxic insulin resistant prone horse. Gut health - The Microbiome

You may have read my articles on the microbiome and the inroads being made in understanding human and horse microbial populations and the impact that healthy microbiomes have on the wholistic health picture hence why we start with the soil! Gut health can be seriously improved with some lovely herbs and natural minerally rich clays. I have been field testing a new combination which we are calling Equigesta-pre, which contains Brewer's yeast (as a source of selenium and pre-biotic), Fennel powder (traditionally used as pancreatic support and digestive improver), Liquorice powder (tones the gut wall as well as adrenal support), Chamomile as a parasympathetic support as well as Slippery Elm and Aloe Vera powder to support and nourish Mucin production in the whole of the GIT. The results we are seeing from a very small amount of this 100% natural powder, given daily in the horse feed, is demonstrating yet again that appropriate amounts of the correct herbs will offer amazing health benefits such as obviously reducing systemic inflammatory responses from metabolic toxins to easing pain from an inflamed gut. Agelessness is all about the anti-oxidants and oils. Joints, ligaments, bones, tendons and connective fascia all need to be free from "sticky" inflammation and be well lubricated so connecting surfaces glide over each other easily. When looking at cells and what they require for nourishment it is understandable that if you or your horse is dehydrated as well as have inflammatory responses occurring because of a sluggish elimination system or a highly processed diet, you and your horse will age very quickly and look stiff and sore, deteriorating slowly. The best nourishment comes in the form of seed oils; providing essential fatty acids to keep everything well plumped up. Herbs high in silica aid tissue repair and using herbs high in Allantoin (a cell proliferant) is useful. When thinking about what may age us or our horse, often it is assumed that once you reach a certain age you just start deteriorating - you know how it is - we reach for the reading glasses after age 50 - and we just

assume that this is the way of it. This is not true if you can keep the somatic system as clean and as well-nourished as possible with a clean environment and clean feed. Adding whole herbs and seeds like ground Linseed and ground Rosehips is extremely beneficial. The lignin provides nourishing natural lubrication. Hormones responsible for suppleness and cellular repair are also being stimulated by the essential fatty acids ensuring that the DNA sequencing is correct. Inflammation, toxins and insufficient nourishment are all responsible for aging and mutate the DNA that creates rouge cells (like cancer) or slow repair. Super anti-oxidants (bioflavonoid compounds found in many foods) are well known to help protect the cells from oxidation and breakdown, another important point when discussing anti-aging in both people and animals. Interestingly oxygen is our friend in so many ways but is the enemy to cells with no antioxidant protection (like a cancer cell) which is why increasing oxygen in your blood is a good thing to do to prevent cancer. However, this will also age your cells if you don't have the anti-oxidants working to protect your healthy cells. One of the highest quality super anti-oxidants well researched is Maritime Pine Bark extract. I wild craft this herb and manufacture this extract to be included in many of our human prescription products such as face creams and in our super immune booster and vitality formulas. I also use this herb as part of our cancer support programs in the cases of Melanoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

He is qualified to compete in the 2018 Grand Nationals in the Open Childs Pony 12.2 “14hh. With limited opportunity, due to my daughters changing interests, he is gathering wins to qualify towards the 2018 Royals. In his time with us we have also competed Benny in interschool dressage (Novice level) with championship wins. Benny is a low maintenance pony, great skin, easy keeper and a good eater, he has excellent feet and legs. Pretty much completely handled by my 11yo daughter and exclusively ridden by her. He has natural carriage and very comfortable, expressive paces. We rarely lunge him, just on occasion for exercise purposes. He also enjoys jumping. Realistically priced as this is a genuine sale as my daughter wishes to focus on her new dressage mount and further reduce her involvement in showing. Contact: Sandra Rowley Mob: 0428 719 172

Summer time in Australia brings increases in temperature that add stresses from the environment for our horses. We can build up each horse’s defence mechanisms from within using herbs that help most horses cope with the Summer heat. Photosensitisation and sunburn, insect bites, itch, cracked hooves are just some of the issues your horse may be affected by as a result of too much sun and heat.

Dandelion Leaf $21 per kg

Rosehip Granules 1kg $19. 5kg [$18 per kg] $90.

When the ‘heat within’ is not balanced your horses will seek out cool areas and may be thirsty, aggressive, restless and intolerant to work. Introducing cooling herbs and considering the energetic aspect of these herbs will help bring coolness to the body, and in doing so, assist each horse in being more comfortable throughout the hotter months. Blending herbs for Summer which contains the cooling herbs: Calendula, Clivers, Rosehips, Marshmallow root, and Dandelion leaf can be a way to cover off on most Summer discomforts. These herbs come together nutritionally to support the whole body and this will reflect in the body with a shinier coat, healthier skin and stronger hooves. Adding a scoop of these blended herbs for the hot months will assist most horses in coping through Summer, strengthening each horse from within, by cleaning the skin so that it can ‘breathe’ and making the immune system stronger. A herbal approach will help to buffer your horse from the onslaught of the coming hot weather.
