The Horse Report

Take a journey to the high country The Australian Outback Spectacular has built a reputation for delivering great shows about Aussie equestrian legends and that continues with its latest production, High Country Legends. This time the show takes the audience on a captivating journey to the snow peaked mountains of Australia’s high country where legendary yarns come alive with inspiring stories of Australian characters. At the Australian Outback Spectacular, the animals are as much the stars of the show as their human counterparts and High Country Legends will bring together stunts, special effects, music humour and action together in the air conditioned venue on the Gold Coast. Among the tales brought to life will be the story of the Aussie girl, May Wirth, sold to the circus at the tender age of 7, who became one of the world’s greatest bareback riders, the mystery on the Road to Omeo with Australia’s yesteryear ghosts riding an eerie stagecoach for eternity, the gritty determination of outback mailman Tom Kruse and the art of trapeze, introduced to Australia in the early 1850s by Frenchman Jules Leotard. And to lighten the mood, there’s a special section devoted to man’s best friend - in this case the Border Collie. This wonderful breed is an intelligent and athletic dog developed primarily for herding livestock. The camp cook, ‘Bluey’ finds he is no match for his dog Boof who manages to outwit,

outplay and outmanoeuvre his master at every turn in a comical display. The production is accompanied by a stirring musical score composed especially for the show, as well as popular country music composed and written by country music legend Lee Kernaghan. And it’s not just about the show at the Outback Spectacular with the audience invited to take an active role as well. Upon arrival, the audience is divided into supporters of rival stations, Warrego Station or Bogong High Plains, and then it’s up the crowd to cheer on their stockmen and women during the course of the evening as

While the action is going on, enjoy the majesty of an arena transformed into the snowy peaks of the high country as 40 stockmen and women serve up a gourmet Aussie feast with beer, wine or soft drink to every member of the audience – all in record time. The beauty of the Australian Outback Spectacular is that even if you have been before, the latest production High Country Legends will serve up something different. Remember – racehorses are racehorses By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic

tees that the combination will be successful but careful thought, logic, commonsense, and expert advice will go a long way towards achieving a happy outcome. There is not a horse on this planet that was born purely to be the “pleasure” provider for a human. Horses are all individual animals that are wild, nomadic, self reliant and endowed with a very fierce instinct for self preservation. Not one of them ever came with the single minded purpose of being a riding or performance horse. They all have to be broken in, educated, trained and evolved towards owning the attributes and skills necessary to be a riding horse. Fight or flight are the primary natural elements for self preservation. Fortunately horses do not fight, but they rely on flight to escape danger. This means that they have to be reactive, and potentially ready to suddenly explode and get away. Generations of careful selection and breeding have developed breeds of horses that are more likely to be submissive and align with the wishes of their human masters, but the thoroughbred, the most common breed, is not one of these. Thoroughbreds are bred to race, and in most cases, this means having the potential to be very explosive and get from one point to another in the shortest possi-

I have been very lucky to have been able to enjoy a career working with many wonderful people, and necessarily, many wonderful horses, and I am thoroughly convinced that one of the very “real” pleasures a person can experience in life is too have been lucky enough to have enjoyed a successful relationship with a riding or performance horse. The bonding is intense and emotive, the experience exhilarating and exciting, and the memories remain with that person for life. A very common scenario is a parent who was fortunate enough to have enjoyed this situation, who now has a child and wishes that person to be able to indulge the same experience. Alternatively, a child whose parents are not “horsey”, or an older individual suddenly decides they would like to become involved with a horse. These people are about to embark on what hopefully will be the beginning of a lifetime

ble time. Nowhere does this trait become accentuated more than during the time any such horse spends at the racetrack. Racehorses have only one purpose in life and they are trained get out and go. They are ridden by very experienced riders and kept under very strictly controlled management conditions. They are given a very basic breaking in education and the riders do not have to get the horse to do anything other than jump out of the barrier, follow a precisely delineated course and be able to be restrained and accelerated as required. Unfortunately, a large majority of these horses are not able to race fast enough and so they are retired and “re-homed” in many cases. A very large number of these filter down into the pleasure or performance area and become available for potential new owners. There is quite a large industry that has evolved where equestrian trainers acquire horses off the track, put them through some basic re-education, and then offer them for sale. Never has the old saying held more meaning - (Potential) buyer beware. These horses are NOT suitable for junior, inexperienced, or riders that may lack a little self confidence or bravado when it comes to actually hopping on this horse and riding. Take absolutely no notice of what your perception has been when you inspected and trialled the horse at the vendor’s place. These trainers are all very experienced, competent, and genuinely well meaning people but they are able to make the horse submit and behave simply because of their ability to dominate the animal and take control. Remember, in most cases these horses have been with the trainer for less that three months, often much less and this is absolutely no time at all for the horse to have become indoctrinated and “re-personalised” into a settled, mature, and relaxed individual. They are still very young, certainly usually less than six years old, (still a teenager in human terms).

The Horse Report

Research is crucial prior to purchase From page 10. Their predominant life experience has been several years at the race track. Many of these horses go out into the performance world under these circumstances, the ‘contract” with the new owner has been unsuccessful and the horse often progresses through a period of several years of languishing in a paddock, or having very little done with it. The value of the horse decreases, and then some new potential owner sees what they perceive to be a bargain, and the cycle repeats itself. Nowhere has there been any significant passage of time in the past where the horse has been subjected to the “proper” training, discipline, and competition that is required for that horse to become a schoolmaster, or one capable of allowing the new inexperienced rider the latitude of being able to get on and coax the horse to perform the movements they require. Picture the scenario: The ex racehorse that we have

been describing above, that has absolutely no idea of what he is supposed to do when a rider tugs on the reins of kicks them in the belly. The new inexperienced rider has no idea whatsoever of how to apply the subtle aids and demands, and to be able to dominate the horse and get it to submit. Invariably the rider has some self doubt and lack of confidence. It is a recipe for disaster. The poor horse senses danger, reacts, and sometimes explodes, further accelerating the “fear” in the rider and the experience deteriorates into something extremely unpleasant and the rider loses interest. What a dreadful shame, as this poor individual is now almost certainly destined to miss out on what we have described above as one of life’s great experiences. Selection and acquisition of the horse is the single most important element in the career of any budding equestrian Probably the single most important confidence builder when trying to buy a horse is the

recent work and performance history of the animal. If there is documentary evidence that the horse has been competing and performing in a similar role to what you are intending, then there has to be every chance that the animal is "sound" for what you want. The problem is that many horses for sale have not been worked for some time. There is always a reason, and it is critical that the purchaser goes to whatever lengths to establish what the real

reasons are. Often, it is genuine that the vendor simply cannot, or does not, have the time. or interest, to work the horse, but probably more often, there is some real reason for this lack of work. There can be a lameness or medical problem with the horse or very commonly, the behaviour of the animal makes such activity unpleasant. In so many cases, the horse has not been worked, the stated reason being that the rider lost interest. The temperament displayed at assessment can suggest that the horse should be reasonably cooperative and unreactive and so potentially he should be a good ride. The other aspect is level of training and if the horse has not had a lot of education, then riding can be difficult for an inexperienced rider, particularly if wanting to do competitive work. The purchaser has to carefully evaluate these factors, and above all, seek proper and professional advice before committing.

The Horse Report

When is the right time to raise the bar ? By TANJA KRAUS When is the right time to raise the bar? The short and very simple answer to this is - when he is ready. But I will offer you a little bit more information than that, so let’s begin. Once we have decided on a foundation program for our horses, we start looking to the future. Some of us rush right in and keep on increasing demands on our young horses, before they are ready, thus 'frying their brain'. Some of us stay at foundation level for years, not really knowing how, or when we can start raising the bar on our horses, and there is someone at every step in between the two extremes. So, we want to raise the bar on our horses - perhaps begin training in a specific discipline, or simply advance in our training at home, but how do we know when our horses are ready for a little bit more expectation. There is not one specific answer, we need to consider a multitude of things when considering raising the bar on our horses. Firstly, time. Now is the time to look at when our horses were started under saddle (or began training at their current level), and consider their level of experience, or better still repetition. I use the word repetition because you might tell me that your horse was started under saddle six months ago, but if he has not been ridden since then, then he is not six months under saddle at all - he is one month under saddle, which happened six months ago. continued page 22

The Horse Report

Logical horse nutrition made easy Supplied by EQUINE VIT & MIN Feeding horses well is not rocket science, but the results (in horse performance and appearance) can blow you out of this world! A horse fed all the roughage, energy and protein s/he needs to grow, work, play, repair and maintain his/her body can still lack vitamins and minerals. Vitamin shortages are most common when hay or grains form a large part of the diet because they are most abundant in fresh plants. By the time hay has been stored 12 months, it will have lost virtually all of its vitamins. Mineral shortages will depend on the plants eaten and the nutrient status of the soil. Zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and vitamins B and E are almost often deficient in an unfortified diet. The principles of equine nutrition are very simple: 1. First, give the horse enough roughage (grass, hay and chaff) – at least 1% of the horse’s bodyweight in dry matter per day provided the total dry matter daily intake is between 1.5 and

Page 16

2.5 % of bodyweight. 2. Provide additional energy (grains or oils) to suit the work level or breeding status if the horse’s energy requirements are greater than the energy content of the roughage. 3. Then, meet protein requirements (checking protein quality and lysine content). A protein supplement is usually only required by growing and breeding horses when good quality roughage is provided. 4. Finally make sure the diet provides sufficient vitamins and minerals in correct ratios. Start with a healthy basic diet Even the best supplements and additives can’t overcome the limitations of a poor base diet for a horse. Quality supplements and vitamin and mineral balancers can bring the glow of inner health to a horse, but only if it is fed all the roughage (grass, hay and chaff), energy (from roughage and grains/oils if necessary) and protein it needs. Therefore make sure the basics of the diet are right first. The first thing you need to know to choose the best diet for your horse is what is missing from

the current diet. An equine nutritionist or specialist software (search horse ration design or calculator online) can help you estimate your horse’s current intake and requirements. Once you know what is missing, choose the most appropriate base diet for your horse and add supplements to fill the gaps in the diet (looking for the most cost effective options). How should I choose a vitamin and mineral supplement? Most supplements contain a blend of macrominerals (those which the horse requires in relatively large amounts) and microminerals (those needed in tiny proportions, but which are essential to good health). The macrominerals are calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, chloride, sodium and sulfur. The microminerals (sometimes called trace minerals) are cobalt, chromium, copper, flouride, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, silicon and zinc. Define what you need in a supplement as different supplements can contain very different quantities of these minerals and

it can be confusing to choose between them. Just because a product lists all the minerals you’re looking for doesn’t mean they will be included at a high enough level to meet your horse’s needs. To make the best choice you will need to refer to your diet analysis (from your nutritionist or software) to find out not only which vitamins and minerals are lacking in the diet, but how much extra your horse needs each day. The friendliest vitamin and mineral supplements on the market will list their ingredients “per dose” rather than “per kilogram” to make your calculations easier. Sometimes even the best supplement might be a little bit short on one of the minerals your horse requires. It might be more cost effective to add a single mineral separately than to increase the dosage of a quality supplement. For example, limestone is a cheap, well-utilised source of calcium and magnesium oxide is a good option where more magnesium is needed.

The Horse Report

Providing your horse with a balanced diet From page 16.

Balance mineral ratios Once you’ve found a supplement to fill in all the vitamin and mineral gaps in your horse’s diet, you need to check that the mineral ratios are balanced. Even when a diet provides enough of every mineral, if the ratios between them are incorrect, your horse's body won't be able to get enough to satisfy it's mineral requirements. Australian horse owners are well aware of the importance of balancing calcium to phosphorous and calcium to oxalate ratios. (Although oxalates are not minerals, this ratio has an important impact on calcium availability). Having these ratios correct is necessary to prevent the risks of “Big Head” to horses grazing high oxalate subtropical coastal pastures or those on very high bran/millrun/cereal diets. Guidelines to aim for include: The calcium to oxalate ratio must be greater than 0.5-1 to 1 especially for growing horses or those kept for long periods on these pastures. The calcium to phosphorous ratio needs to be between 1-3 to 1 for growing horses and between 1-6 to 1 for a mature horse, leaning towards the high end for a horse grazing moderate/high oxalate pastures. (Hint: feeding additional limestone can be a cheap solution to boost the calcium content of a diet). Keep the total calcium intake below 5 times dietary requirement. Other mineral ratios of importance include:

Calcium to magnesium should lie in the range of 1-2 parts of calcium for every part of magnesium (Hint: Magnesium oxide is an affordable and effective ingredient to boost magnesium levels in the diet). Zinc to copper should be between 2-3 parts zinc for every part copper. Iron to copper should be between 5-7 parts iron for every part zinc. Avoid Toxicity The final step is to check that you are not feeding too high a level of any nutrients.

Most vitamins and minerals have a very high safety margin but two to be aware of are selenium and iodine. Keep iodine levels below 5 mg/kg of dry matter fed Keep selenium levels below 0.5 mg/kg of dry matter fed. Many Australian soils are selenium deficient, so this mineral is often added to horse feeds. Be careful not to double dose on selenium through different feed sources as this is one mineral where toxicity levels are relatively low. What if I change my horse’s diet? If you change your horse’s feeds you will need to review the vitamin and mineral balance. Be aware that the dietary gaps can vary significantly if you normally feed high levels of a fortified grain blend or pellet and then cut that feed back if your horse is injured, goes on spell or needs less energy due to a seasonal improvement in pasture growth. A diet that was well balanced on 4 kg of pellets per day, can be very deficient when cut back to 0.5 kg of pellets per day. The process of choosing a good base diet to meet your horse’s needs for roughage, protein and energy, then supplementing with vitamins and minerals is well worth the effort. Your time and energy will be rewarded with the knowledge that the diet you feed is giving your horses everything required to look and feel their very best! The Horse Report

The Unique Horseman Challenge By Kim McTaggart The Unique Horseman was held in Dalby on the 7th 8th & 9th Nov and was a very exciting and educational event, bringing horseman and horsewoman to the public to show their skills and techniques of starting an unbroken 2year old horse. Whilst this event is open to anyone with in the age groups, of which there are two, YOUNG GUNS are under 40 and LEGENDS is for 40 and over, the horseman must meet a standard of skills and knowledge set by a panel of well-respected horseman before being excepted to compete. This year was no exception, with 3 outstanding horseman in each section the competition was extremely tough, with only one female contestant, Esther Cruckshank in the Young Guns section and she certainty gave the boys and run for their money! Brendon Clark made the long haul from the USA where he is now living, to do a super job with a slightly difficult horse, giving him a win in the 3rd round and bringing him to an incredibly close 2nd to Brett Welsh. Brett had to work hard for this win and did so by winning the 1st and 2nd round and keeping up enough points in round 3 to give him the Title of “ THE UNIQUE HORSEMAN YOUNG GUN 2014” Ron Wall, Mick Aspinall and Brett Peel battled it out for the Title of the “LEGEND” and again no one was disappointed with the level of experience shown by these 3 Horseman. Mick and Ron got some trust quick from their little horses allowing them to get saddled up first, Brett had to spend a bit more

time on the ground with his to gain his trust which showed great horsemanship in being able to read what the horse needed and not rushing him. Once Brett had the trust of his horse he quickly caught up to Ron and Mick making round 3 very interesting. Eventually after winning all 3 go rounds Ron Wall was named “THE UNIQUE HORSEMAN LEGENDS 2014” Ron also won the Peoples Choice award and was the overall winner. Flying M Promotions would like to take the opportunity to thank the our Sponsors, without you this event would not be possible, Terry and Christine Hall of Halls Stockhorse for suppling the horses many thanks, our Judges for and outstanding effort and our

competitors for the incredible display of horsemanship. Stay tuned for next years dates, it will be an event not to be missed!!!!!

Dont Rush it

‰ from page 15 Consider how much repetition your horse has been doing in his foundation work. Secondly, knowledge. How much does he actually know ? Each time you run through your foundation work does he perform each task with confidence, with willingness and a good attitude ? Or are you still having to increase your ask, or wait a time before he gets to it ? If he is still having trouble figuring out what you are asking - then you need to get him solid in his foundation. Third - Lightness. How soft can you ask for the tasks to be performed ? If you are still having to wait, or get busy to get him to perform his tasks, then you need to fix it now before moving on to the next level - if he cannot perform his foundation work from a soft ask - what makes you think he will be any better at an advanced manoeuvre ? If you have these three ducks in a row, it is time to 'test' your foundation in higher pressure situations. There is no need to take your horse to the most stressful environment you can find to test him - simply take him out of his comfort zone - this may be to a new location, away from his paddock mates or to a competition, then you can run through your foundation work and measure his willingness under distraction. Once you have done this multiple times and you are happy with the outcome, then you can begin to raise the bar in his training levels. This initially will be simply asking him to perform the foundation work to a higher level of accuracy or a faster speed, or combining foundation tasks. You will always practice the foundation work - for as long as you ride him, as fantastic foundations are the base for advanced manoeuvres. Fantastic foundations will be your ' go to' if your horse is nervous or worried, or getting stressed learning something new - your foundations give him confidence in himself, as he knows them and feels comfortable when performing them.

Rider Profile of the month Elloise Devlin by Indiana Turner - Flash It Photography First Riding Experience

My very first encounter with sitting in the saddle started with mum putting me on her Warmbloods when I was about 6 months old. But my first real experience would be when I got my first pony Lucy, a grey Australian pony, when I was 5 Instructor –

Jenny Gherke is my amazing coach! She is a fantastic coach to many young riders, and is also very involved in Australian Young Riders, having created a facebook page named ‘Australian Young Dressage Rider Page’ (give it a Like). Jenny has helped Sam and I over the past few years so much, and I am so grateful to her!

Every Rider Looks Up to Someone, Even The Athlete - Who Is Your Inspiration?

At equitana 2013, I watched the Masterclass with Carl Hester, which was so informative and correct! It was so great to hear Carl’s techniques to training a horses from preliminary to Grand Prix. I took pages worth of notes, which I continue to refer to though my own training regularly. What Do You Look For In A Horse

I look for active hind legs in all 3 paces, and also good overtrack in the walk and jump in the canter. I have always been told that the trot can be improved, and I know first hand that that statement is 100% true. I also love a horse with a friendly personality and willingness to learn.

How Many Horses Are You Competing and Training

I am currently only competing Sam. Going into year 11, one horse will most likely be as much as I can successfully handle. I cant wait to push our training to the next level over the Christmas holidays, and try some new tricks! Hobbies Or Things You Like To Do If You Ever Get Spare Time

Hmm, spare time? What is that again? I love to go to the movies with my dad or my friends to see the latest action/sci-fi movies. I love reading, mainly sci-fi/fantasy novels. I’m currently in year 10, so assignments and study tend to fill in my spare gaps unfortunately. Is There Someone That Has Supported You With Your Venture In the Equine World

My Mum has been my life long coach and biggest supporter to me! Mum has taken me to competitions all over Queensland and Sydney for so many years! Mum and I spend pretty much every weekend together competing at competitions, or at clinics. I’m so grateful to have a mum that is so passionate about our sport and horses, and encourages me to always do my best! Oh, and my dad and two brothers are also extremely supportive and proud of my achievements! I have an amazing support group behind me! Best Moments In Your Riding Career

2014 has been my best year in open and young rider competitions! My best experience would have to be at the Australian National Championships at SIEC this year! I won the FEI Young Rider (16-21) team test and individual tests, and came second in the freestyle! I have started to train Grand Prix movements on my Prix St George/Inter 1 horse Brimstone Anakiwa (aka Sam), which is the most amazing experience!! Do You Have Any Horses That You Believe Are Coming Through The Ranks And Will Potentially Be A Future Superstar

I have a 2 year old Quondo Quondo colt that I believe could be a future dressage success. I can’t wait to break Quinn in, which I will be starting during my gap year (good timing!) My mum has a beautiful 4 year old gelding by Furst Tyme, that has really lovely paces and willingness to learn! He has the most playful and gentle nature, which makes him even more lovable. I think that my beautiful boy Sam also has the potential to be great Grand Prix horse in the future! He is picking up the movements quickly, with eagerness to please, which is one of his best qualities. Page 26

Sponsors

I’m very privileged to have such great sponsors, who support me in my achievements and dedication. Giddy Up Girl Australia is an amazing equestrian clothing brand, owned by Tammy James. I love the clothes that the Giddy Up range have, and I always receive complements about their competition shirts, jodhpurs and Jackets! Pryde’s Easifeed keeps our performance horses in top condition all year round. Over the last few years, we have found it very hard to keep Sam’s condition. He lost weight while traveling and when in stables, which made competition session quite difficult. I travelled to SIEC in October to participate in the National Squad clinic and the National championships, and was away from home for 2 weeks. Mum and I were quite nervous about how Sam’s weight would be. I can honestly say that he put on weight,. I RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE!

Changing your feed regime should be introduced over 4-5 days By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist If it is necessary to alter your horse’s diet at any time this should not be done suddenly. By making changes slowly will reduce the risk of digestive upsets such as diarrhoea or more serious conditions such as colic. There may be a change in weather conditions and this can include moving into the colder months which is what we are experiencing right now. Temperatures in Victoria which

is where we live have dropped to less than 9° overnight, we have seen a change in our horses coat’s and there is now a need to consider increasing the warmth during the night. There can often be a direct link to dietary changes and health conditions; this can include laminitis and possibly colic so making changes to your feed regime must be done over a period of time to ensure that there is no negative effect. Recommendations for feed nutritional requirements for horses have often been supplied by the National Research Council’s nutrient requirements for horse’s publication, however these recommendations generally do not take into consideration each horses biochemical uniqueness. It is my preference to use recommended optimal allowances for horses this gives us the opportunity to make changes according to each horse’s individual requirements. Making changes to feed include alterations to grain, hay, pasture and vitamin and mineral intake. The horse has a very unique digestive system; I often say that whoever designed the horse’s digestive system must have been on drugs!

enq@hiform.com.au 1300 44 3676

www.hiform.com.au Page 28

I say this simply because it is a very complicated system and extremely sensitive in particular to changes in diet. It is therefore necessary to make feed changes over at least 4 to 7 days. Making these changes over a number of days will also depend on the type of feed that is currently being fed and how drastic the change is. For example if your horse is currently on a very basic natural diet and all you are doing is increasing the same feed then the number of days taken to do so will not be very long. However if you are changing your horse from a diet that is complex to one that is quite simple then this change will require a lengthy time. Making changes slowly will ensure that your horse will not experience digestive upsets. The horse’s digestive system requires a certain amount of time to adjust to diet changes. Researchers discovered that by adding fat rapidly to a horses diet can affect the faeces of the horse by making it slimy, however when the fat was added slowly this problem was reduced. The following recommendations will help you to determine how will you will lower or increase your feed. It has been suggested that when

you are increasing the grain in a horse’s diet this should be done in small increment amounts of approximately 230 g per day. It is also important to be aware that feeding a high starch diet will also have an effect on how you will make these changes. This is a broad view as this amount of grain will depend entirely on what you are currently feeding your horse. It is also dependent on what you are trying to achieve, are you try to increase energy because your horse’s workload has increased or are you simply trying to increase energy because your horse is lazy? Either way part of this process is a little bit experimental. But the most important thing to remember is time; take time to make any change in your feed regime. If you are changing from one particular type of grain to another, say from oats to steamed and rolled barley this should also be done slowly, generally if you replace approximately 25% of the current horses diet with your horses new diet every second or third day this would be an ideal change over. If you are reducing your grain, it is a similar process only the other way round, reducing the amount of grain by approximately 230 g per day. continued page 29

The Horse Report

Getting feeding right with out stress ‰ from page 28 With hays once again it is really important to make your changes slowly, if you are changing from one type of hay to another then I recommend that you replace approximately 20 to 25% with the new hay every 2 to 3 days this will ensure the transition is done slowly and will reduce the risk of digestive upsets. There are many different types of hays they can be fed to horses this can include alfalfa, cereal hays, rye hays, Clover hays, native pasture hays, barley straw etc. The quality of hay is also variable, so choosing hays is very important because the nutritional content will alter quite dramatically. By simply smelling the hay is an ideal way, if it smells sweet and fresh then chances are it will be good quality. Hays such as alfalfa and oaten will be of a higher nutritional value, some horses simply do not require hays of this quality in particular those who are prone to laminitis. However, horses are perpetual grazers and they require a high percentage of roughage in their diet for their digestive system to function normally. I cannot stress this enough, I have noticed around the world that in many cases horses are not being fed sufficient roughage, horses that are boxed will suffer if we do not provide them with sufficient hays during the day and night. In Australia we are quite fortunate in that our horses can live a normal lifestyle and this includes grazing. But we have suffered quite severe droughts for a number of

K9 Gastro-Intestinal Gastro Intestinal Naturally Healthy GI & Skin

Design by The Stable - www.the establemagazine.com

K9 Joint Support, Collagen + Ligaments, Muscles, Tendons

years, in many parts of Australia it is far more severe than others so we must find ways to compensate and good quality hays can be an excellent replacement. For horses that are being stabled and then turned out during the day it is highly recommended if the pasture is quite lush that horses be turned out on a full stomach, this can reduce the horses grass intake and possibly assist with potential digestive issues. If your horse is being moved to a new property and the pasture is quite different from the previous property then it is recommended to limit the horses time grazing for a number of days to ensure that the horse can become accustomed to the new pasture. There are other issues relating to poor pasture in drought areas, horses on poor pasture run the risk of ingesting bacteria, dirt and other foreign bodies this can cause stress to the digestive

K9 Coat & Eyes Show Body & Condition

system. I always recommend for these situations to use a good pro and prebiotic such as Bioequus this will reduce the risk of diarrhoea, ulcers and possibly even colic. There is no guarantee but it will certainly help the situation. If you own a young growing horse naturally the horse’s dietary needs will change progressively so it is important to contact an expert who can provide the correct advice. Young growing horses require a different approach in many ways to feeding. It is important to get this right because if the horse is not provided the correct nutrient intake as a youngster he will not develop normally. So just to recap, please make sure you make your feed changes over a period of time somewhere between 2 to 7 days and even longer if necessary if the feed changes are quite dramatic. You can contact me for further advice on (03) 9775 6422 or email me enq@hiform.com.au or simply jump on our website and download our free advice form at www.hiform.com.au Making feed changes is something that all of us experience throughout our life as horse owners, but most importantly ensure that your horse is being fed a natural diet that is suited to the species.

Rims can an do crack so check them regular Loosen the wheel nuts one by one and re-tension them when checking things before, or alternately check therm with a torque wrench that is adjusted to the correct setting Wheel Bearingd need to be adjusted and greased regularly When disconnecting the float, its worth spraying some lanotec or wiping a light oil on all the surfaces that rub together , old chain shackles cover with lanotec to make them last and not cease Plus spray around wiring etc, check level of fluid in battery and check if battery is charged as they need to be if u have a float greater than 2000kg Spray also all jockey wheel fittings , bearings should be greased every 6 months, brakes checked after new every 6 months , Handy to write a list out - "WHAT TO DO LIST" FOR HORSEFLOAT, as problems can be fixed before they become bigger

Inside float - point to make- don't use excessive water on floor as it can loosen seal around holding flow down, a simple broom , or sweep up is better, wash down once a month Cleaning of float- makes float last

longer, keeps u happy as well as the horse, spray all moving parts inside with lanotec including springs If your float has spring suspension, check bushes and pins after 12 months as excessive use can cause where, if need to be greased , grease them regularly as this will increase the life of bushes and pins Rubber suspension, check to see if any cracks are occurring or rubber coming out, which is highly unlikely in first three years , our warranty on floats is 5 years, they usually last upto ten years, when they need repairing usually 1 week to two week delay when repairing Lights also need to be checked before every drive, all braking systems need to be checked on every journey for safety, coupling is securely fitted to ball, check your towball regularly Spray coupling also , as it moves all the time, for a better ride and towing , it is a good idea to get suspension upgraded- ie air bags etc call cvss suspension specialists they come to u to advise
