Celebrating the Spirit of the Horse The Australia Outback Spectacular on Queensland’s Gold Coast is about to launch a new show which celebrates the significant contribution which horses have made to the develop of Australia and it character. Titled, ‘The Spirit Of the Horse’, the show will also include a special tribute to one of Australia’s best loved horse, the mighty Phar Lap and how this champion moved a nation. With such a famous horse, finding one which would be able to fill those big ‘equine shoes’ was easy for the people at the Australian Outback Spectacular. They originally purchased seven horses and finally came down to three which weer suitable, both in size and colour.

The new Australia Outback Spectacular show will be called, The Spirit Of The Horse and will include a segment on Phar Lap

The main star of the new show is no stranger to celebrity. The horse who will play the ‘coveted role of Phar Lap is a Victorian named Spike who appeared in the recently released movie called The Cup. Incidently, the new AOS show, Spirit Of The Horse is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Simon Wincer who also directed that movie so he knows what he was looking for for the Outback Spectacular show. Aside from the Phar Lap segment, the new production will feature the horses impact in Australia, from their arrival, the early settlement, the bushranger days and the development of the Australia Stock Horse. The show includes cattle , sheep, trick riding, a few laughs and music by Lee Kernaghan. There will still be the competitive elements with the audience taking sides as two rival cattle station go head to head in various competitions, including Shetland ponies races for the kids. Admission includes a three course meal, drinks during the show and a chance to inspect the impressive facilities with its shops stocked with RM Williams gear and a chance to get up close and personal with some of the equine stars. The Australia Outback Spectacular makes a connection with all Australians, regardless of where they live and for horse lovers, owners

and equestrian supporters of all ages, the latest show, Spirit Of The Horse promises to continue an outstanding standard of entertainment. The new show commences on December 7 and for more information and ticketing details visit www.outbackspectacular.myfun.com.au

Queensland acts on Hendra Virus Report The Queensland Government has adopted a pro-action response to a detailed report by the Queensland Ombudsman into the handling on Hendra virus incidents in the state from 2006 to 2009. The ombudsman, Phil Clarke,(pictured) made 74 recommendations in the wake of his investigations if which nearly half have already been implemented by the government. Mr Clarke’s Hendra Virus Report was submitted to the government late last month and details systemic failures across several government agencies. However he did identify that state government agencies have important roles in responding to Hendra virus incidents, including: Managing biosecurity risks  Controlling diseases in stock, including horses  Regulating the safe disposal

Ombudsman finds faults in agencies Government agency failings included:  outdated and inconsistent policies and procedures  dated and overlapping legislation addressing similar issues which lead to inconsistent quarantine practices  inadequate communication with vets and horse owners of potentially harmful material m managing workplace health and safety issues  Regulating public health concerns  Communicating with vets, horse owners and members of the public. The investigation primarily focused on the administrative actions of Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries, and to a lesser extent, Queensland Health and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

 inadequate frameworks for ex gratia payments and compensation  failure to implement recommendations contained in previous internal and external reviews  inadequate training and  resources for agency staff, contractors and property owners  inadequate records of decisions. The report details a two-year investigation into the handling of six Hendra virus incidents between 2006 and 2009. In 2010-2011, a further 11 Hendra virus incidents were detected in Queensland. This report does not consider the later incidents in any detail as the Ombudsman’s investigation had already provided sufficient evidence for this report. The Ombudsman’s investigation involved more than 50 interviews with senior government

officers, private veterinarians and people affected by Hendra virus incidents. The investigation also examined thousands of pages of internal government documents and emails and consulted scientific experts. “I found evidence that systemic failures hampered the way government agencies responded to Hendra virus incidents,”Mr Clarke said. “The lessons from this investigation will help government agencies respond more effectively in future. “My recommendations are designed to improve the way the public sector manages Hendra incidents and other significant biosecurity threats.” By the end of 2011, more than 70 percent will have been completed by the Queensland government with the remaining recommendations to be completed by mid-2012 under the oversight of a steering committee. Race horse ownership gets a woman’s touch The Magic Millions will launch the world's first women's only incentive thoroughbred race Magic Millions Racing Women (MMRW) 2YO Classic at the 2013 carnival. The race has been introduced by Magic Millions owners Katie Page-Harvey and Gerry Harvey to incentivise women to own horses within the thoroughbred industry and drive interest from women about the broader scope of employment opportunities that the racing industry offers. The Magic Millions Racing Women (MMRW) 2YO Classic running in 2013 will have a Magic Millions Racing Women's Bonus incentive of $500,000, which will be distributed between the top four all female owned or leased horses in finishing order of the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The aim is to create a women's only race for horses owned by women. Magic Millions owner Katie Page-Harvey believes that

becoming a thoroughbred owner can introduce women to a new world of opportunities. She has historically been a strong advocate for women, particularly in the sports in which she is heavily involved in. Now Page-Harvey is aiming to encourage and incentivise women to get involved in thoroughbred racing by holding an information session at Magic Millions next year to help guide

tive announced by Magic Millions. “The team from Magic Millions has always been a leader in innovation with its wonderful carnival and this new incentive is terrific, she said. Women who are interested in the initiative can receive more detail by attending the Magic Millions Racing Women Area at the New Owners Information Day on January 8 to learn more about how they can become owners or pursue other aspects of employment in the industry, from strapping to fashion. The event will be an opportunity for women to hear from racing experts including Gai Waterhouse and Katie PageHarvey about their personal experiences in the racing industry. and better support them in the industry. The purpose is to demystify this very lucrative industry for women, providing an entry point through education and a substantial financial incentive. Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey said that becoming a thoroughbred owner can introduce women to a new world of opportunities. “Racehorse ownership over the years has been dominated by men – but we know the sport is loved by women and this $500,000 bonus is a great incentive, he said. Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said the organisation wanted more women to experience the thrill of owning a racehorse and with the new $500,000 bonus for the 2013 BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic that thrill could be so much bigger and better. THE PERFECTION How would you describe it? When we asked many of the world’s top riders what they felt when they sat in our newest dressage saddle, they exclaimed it’s “Perfect”. So we named it “Perfection”. When our customers asked us to explain the difference between the “Perfection” and other saddles, we realized that the feelings are indescribable. You have to experience it. “Perfection” is a feeling you don’t want to miss.

SOLAR POWERED SNAKE REPELLER Wanting to protect your family and pets from dangerous snakes this summer? The Solar Powered Snake Repeller may be just what you have been looking for. This innovative new range of solar powered snake repellers employ vibration technology to scare away those dangerous reptiles. This unique repeller is effective on all kinds of snakes - it emits a pulsing vibration which the snake picks up through sensors throughout its body. The snake perceives a danger zone causing them to evacuate the area. Most snakes will retreat immediately. The Solar Power Snake Repeller is suitable for the garden, stables, yard, orchard, farm or anywhere you want to be protected from snakes. The protection range for these units is 15m radius or 30m diameter. Features • Emits sonic and vibration which irritates the snake, driving them away • Power is supplied by a solar cell, a rechargeable accumulator collecting power for operation at night as well. • When the accumulator is fully charged it has enough power to operate through the night thus ensuring round the clock operation. • Each unit covers a radius of 15m (30m diameter) • Useful to keep rodents away (currently being trialled on cane toads) • Does not interfere with electrical appliances or fences How many to use? For a normal-sized house block we recommend two units, one in the front one in the back, for higher risk areas four units. For a larger garden four to six units will give good results. For larger areas we recommend spacing repellers at 30 metre intervals around your boundary. As a general rule eight units should give excellent coverage on an acre section. • Used successfully in Australia for over five years • 100% safe and non-toxic to children, pets and other wildlife Available from Saddleworld Ipswich Ph 07 3282 8244 or email: sales@saddleworldipswich.com.au

The Winning Tongue Plate Bit is designed to make life more comfortable and relaxed for the horse while reducing the risk and injury. Already proving to be a big winner and endorsed by leading trainers competitors and vets, the WTP bit stops the bit pinching the tongue and therefore stops pulling. Its design means the plate sits on top of the tongue, eliminating the need for tongue ties and greatly reducing the risk of soft palate damage. Since the tongue can not get over the top of the bit, the tongue does not hang out of the mouth and with the horse more comfortable, there less resistance on their part meaning less pulling, head shaking or even rearing. While reducing the risk of injury, the WTP bit at the same time improves oxygen supply for the horse which in turns improves performance. Leading trainers such as David Hayes has seen the benefits first hand of the new bit and has soundly endorsed it. The bit also reduces the incidence of bleeding after exercise and a drop in soft palate damage has seen it also given the tick of approval from vets. Designed in Australia and recognised at international design awards, the WTP bit is easy to fit and also easy to clean. It is advised that owners allow a few days for their horse to become use to the WTP bit but once the horse has, the results should provide a more relaxed and far more comfortable horse which is more receptive to to the rider and capable of improved performance, regardless of the discipline. If you are concerned about the well-being of your horse and want to see it reach its potential, the WTP bit may just be the answer you have been looking for. Puffs/anhydrosis and dealing with the heat By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic As it has been so hot recently, and we are approaching the Christmas and New Year period, I thought it might be time to discuss anhydrosis, the technical term for the inability of a horse to sweat. Also called ` Puffs Disease’ because of the puffing seen in horses trying to cool themselves. Firstly it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of heat regulation in horses. When the horse commences to exercise and muscle contracts, energy must be utilised to power the muscle contractions. Biochemical pathways in the muscle fibres process energy stored in the tissues. This energy is obtained from feed in the digestive system and stored as fat and starch. The process of converting stored energy into mechanical energy for muscle contraction is very inefficient and at least 60% is wasted and lost as heat energy. This has the effect of raising the

core muscle and body temperature. Nature dictates that for survival, the body temperature has to be maintained at very close to 38 degrees and so it is very important for the body to be able to get rid of this wasted heat energy when exercising. In the horse, most heat dissipation is via the evaporation of sweat and radiation from the skin into the atmosphere. When the environmental temperature is in the mid 20s and humidity is low, this process is quite efficient. When the temperatures are in the low 30s and humidity is high, heat loss is very inefficient and the horse overheats. Nerve centres in the brain respond to this and the horse starts to pant and breathe rapidly as another attempt at heat loss by exchange of heat with the environmental via air breathed into the lungs. Anhydrosis or `Puffs’ is a condition in horses where basically the sweat glands lose the ability to function. This is thought to be the result of

an extended period of over stimulation of the glands to the point where they lose the ability to respond to adrenalin and simply wear out. The horse stops, or displays a reduced ability to sweat, and heat stress develops. CLINICAL SIGNS: o Absence of sweat - partial or complete o Panting respiratory rate even at rest, but particularly after exercise o Hair loss, particularly around the face and neck o Exercise intolerance o General depression & ill thrift DIAGNOSIS: o Clinical signs and physical examination o Adrenaline tests - different concentrations of adrenaline are injected under the skin and the local sweating response is assessed. However, many horses that have temporary sweating problems will respond normally to these tests giving many false negatives. TREATMENT: o There is no medical cure o Hose for a long period to cool (30 - 40 minutes). When hosing is finished, scrape the horse off and towel dry to damp to assist evaporation. o Provide a fan if possible to increase evaporation. o Concentrate on hosing over large blood vessels as well as entire body eg. Jugular veins and leg veins (inside front legs and hind legs), head and neck o No treatments/medications appear to be effective. o May supplement with salt and light salt (3:1 - 120g Lite salt may be advantageous per day). o Various supplements containing amino acids and mineral elements have been advocated but none have been shown to have definitive benefits o Always ensure your horse has access to plenty of water MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION: This is primarily an environmental condition and the underlying problem is that the horse is poorly adapted to living in the

tropics. The heat affects nearly all horses adversely and most are uncomfortable during the hot time of the year. The horse is not suited to enforced physical exercise during such conditions. Fortunately very few of these horses in this area progress to true clinical anhydrosis. Places like Townsville and Cairns and in particular, Singapore, have many clinical horses. In our climate, most horses can be perfectly functional during the rest of the year when conditions are more equitable. If your horse is seriously affected, the simplest thing is simply to spell the horse over the really bad months and plan your training and competition for the rest of the year. Fortunately most of the competitive year in most sports complies with this approach. If you have to train your horse during the bad months, most people tend to get up and work the horse early in the morning. I firmly believe this to be an incorrect approach and very often the early mornings are extremely hot and humid, the horse heats up and then the day simply becomes more and more oppressive. It is usually much more satisfactory to work the horse in the early evening when at least the worst heat of the day has passed and in most cases, there is at least a strong breeze to help dissipate the heat and evaporation from sweat. If you feel your horse is having some problems, you should consult with your veterinarian. The horse should be examined to ensure there is no underlying respiratory system problem, and then a plan developed to allow the best management of the horse. Nearly all horses with heat intolerance can be managed to allow them to perform satisfactorily for the rest of the year. The majority of horses will commence sweating again later in the cooler months.

Long and low - the gymnastic preparation By JOHN DOWNES

again get him on the bit with his hind legs well engaged, with a soft contact, a steady rhythm and have another go. All horses will need rebalancing. The degree and regularity will depend upon his education and gymnastic ability. My goal is that he will execute this exercise without going on the forehand but of course this will take a while.

I was going over a recent article the other day and realised I had failed to mention the value of Long and Low in the gymnastic preparation of your horse. Most of you will be familiar with the exercise but for people who are not here is a brief precis of what it entails. The horse normally, in trot on a 20 meter circle, will carry himself in a stretched frame with his head close to the ground, maintaining himself on the bit, his back will be raised and swinging and he will hold a steady rhythm and a soft contact with the rider's hands. Benefits to the horse include:  Relaxation not only physically but mentally  Increased suppleness and a swinging back  Increased longitudinal submission and thus acceptance of the bridle  The lifting of his back allows him to step further under his body with his hind legs thus improving engagement and balance  A requirement of most of the Equestrian Australia Preliminary

Figure 1

John Downes introduces Jethro to Long and Low exercises

and Novice tests A word of warning though. This exercise when done poorly or excessively particularly in draw reins or double bridle can lead to the now discredited Rollkur. They are very different exercises. Be clear in your mind what you are trying to do. Remember Long and Low is not Rollkur, low deep and round or hyperflexion. As shown above in figure 1, I

introduce this exercise to the horse very early on the training. As soon as I feel the horse can carry himself on the bit with a soft contact on a 20 meter circle, I move on to the introduction of the Long and Low or showing him the way towards the ground. This has a clear benefit to the horse as the muscles that may have been working with tension and have become contracted are now allowed to stretch and relax. Like any other movement, the developing of the exercise will often take months. Some horses are naturally more balanced whilst others will struggle. This can be due to poor conformation as well as a lack of correct muscular development. So let's get back to how we introduce the exercise. I will have the horse on a 20 meter circle in trot on his best rein. When he is on the bit and maintaining a soft contact with my hands, I will soften my hands and surrender the reins a little. He should follow the bit forward and down and lengthen his frame a little. If he fails to do so, I rebalance him by bringing the inside hind leg under (half halts) and then repeat the softening of the reins. You will initially have to repeat this aid numerous times on the circle until he gets the idea. As I have mentioned previously some horses are quicker with the concept than others. Now once he starts to stretch one of two things will occur. He will either accelerate or pull. This is him shifting his weight from the hind quarter onto the forehand and he will require rebalancing. So shorten your reins a little and

Points to consider or be aware of:  Sponging or fiddling with the reins may get him to drop his head but he will not lift his back so the gymnastic benefit of the exercise will not be achieved  Using draw reins or other gadgets will often get his head down and his neck low but you may well not achieve a swinging back as his hind legs may be trailing  If your horse pulls or accelerates he will need rebalancing as he has gone on the forehand  The rider decides what frame he works in, he should not take the reins from you  You can use Long and Low in some lateral exercises to help develop a swinging back and suspension  The regular changing between collection and extension, a shorter frame and Long and Low is a great way of increasing the gymnastic ability of your horse  Keeping the horse in Long and Low is a way of enforcing relaxation and preventing shying Ideally I start my and finish my training sessions with this exercise and when used wisely Long and Low will give massive benefit to your horse and is a most important step in the pathway to the higher level tests.

Hawkesbury Dressage Club - celebrating 21 years Hawkesbury Dressage Club is turning 21 in 2012 and we want you and your horse to help us celebrate! The opportunity to ride your horse at the incredible Sydney International Equestrian Centre is just one reason to be a part of Hawkesbury Dressage Club. The venue was not only the host of the 2000 Olympic Equestrian events, but also plays host to the Sydney CDI , and the Australian Dressage Championships. Now you too can also experience the magic of competing at this fantastic venue which has superb arena surfaces and a great atmosphere. With the enviable home ground of the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, the Hawkesbury Dressage Club is run by a small but very dedicated committee. Four competitions will be held in 2012 with a member's only day at the end of the year. The club also runs protocol and training clinics which are very popular with members. Successful national riders such as Judy Dierks, Anne Slatford and Peter Shaw are just some of the instructors members have had the opportunity to train with. The 2011 championships was the club's biggest to date with 370 entries and $6000 worth of prizes kindly donated by the sponsors. In our 21st year, the 2012 championships will be even bigger and run over two days. The club is expecting record entries and prize sponsors will have the opportunity to promote their products at the venue. New members are welcome to join, membership is affordable and includes reduced entry fees to all HDC competitions and exclusivity to our protocol/training days. Membership applications are available through Global Entries Online www.globalentriesonline.com.au Also, as part of our membership, members have the opportunity to nominate themselves and their horse for the club's Horse of the Year award.
