Ben Hudson claimed the 2016 Australian Endurance Champion by the narrowist of margins on Cap Braveheart. Sarah Sullivan Photography

Hudson defends endurance title It was very close but Ben Hudson successfully defended his national title after completing the 160km ride in very wet conditions at the 2016 National Endurance Championships held at Sterling Crossing Endurance at Imbil on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Despite heavy rain and tough conditions Hudson, riding Cap Braveheart from Oso Arabians at Table Top in NSW, achieved the impressive time of 10 hours 15 minutes and 30 seconds, averaging a speed of about 15km per hour, while runner-up and local Kaylea Maher galloped in only three seconds behind. Matthew Sample, owner of Sterling Endurance Arabians and founder of the club, said he was delighted with the outcome of the inaugural endurance event to be hosted at Australia's first purpose-built endurance venue and congratulated Mr Hudson on the outstanding result. "Ben had an excellent ride, especially considering riders rode in rain for most of the time which adds significantly to the effort needed to complete the course," Mr Sample said. "As this is the first time we have hosted an event, we are fortu-

nate that many of these tracks have had very little exposure to riders which made things a little easier on those competing." "Ben is a true star of the sport. He has only been competing in endurance for one and a half years, working as an electrician prior to his first foray into the sport, and has already taken out two Australian titles and last year's Tom Quilty Cup, which is largely regarded as the most prestigious award in endurance." Second place went to local girl Kaylea Maher on A'Landell Ali from Rushoz Endurance in Imbil and third went to Naomi O'Shaughnessy from Victoria on Castlebar Party Girl. This win looks certain to secure Hudson's place in the Australian team travelling to the World Endurance Championships in Slovakia in September this year. Several of the prospective team members competed at the event which was their last opportunity to impress the selectors who will make their decision over the next few weeks. Natural therapies help achieve balance Natural Medicine – LES REES Equine Naturopath The individuality of horses is no different from that of humans. Each of us has a unique set of requirements to maintain our health depending on factors ranging from genetic predisposition to acquired physical and psychological symptoms that influence the development of characteristics, behaviour, conformation and general demeanour. These are important factors when formulating treatments. Natural therapies work exceedingly well when all these aspects are taken into consideration and can bring about some astounding results in restoring balance in all aspects of physical and mental health. Being herbivores, horses are well suited to herbal medicine. In the wild they’re able to self-medicate but this isn’t an option for domesticated horses due to lack of available biodiversity. Herbal medicines work better when used in combination;

using them singly can limit the treatment as each herb has its own set of individual actions according to its phytochemical and phytonutrient components. For example, devil’s claw has anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions and can be extremely useful for a number of conditions when inflammation and pain are present, but it’s important to remember that inflammation is an outcome not the cause of disease and as a result, devil’s claw should be included as only one part of a formulation. Used as preventative medicines, herbs can protect against symptoms associated with seasonal change, possible impact of viruses, joint health and a number of physiological and psychological problems such as digestive upset, respiratory health, hormonal imbalance, anxiety and stress. Occasionally, we hear rumors about the efficacy of using herbal medicines, but scientific research on the vast array of herbs available throughout the world is only in its infancy when

compared to conventional medicine. However, many conventional medicines actually originate from derivatives of medicinal plants. Moreover, it would be extremely difficult to test the healing capacity of herbal medicine by assessing single herbs for analysis because they’re generally used in combinations, which is why they are so effective. In fact, the inherent balancing effect from the different constituents in herbal medicines is the reason that they don't have

the harsh side-effects as some conventional drugs. Herbs are gentle and pose little risk associated with their use providing they are mixed with reference to their individual contraindications and dosage. If there is any doubt in your mind, go to a professional for a consultation or buy a pre-mixed formula for specific common ailments. Using herbs can help soothe the nerves By ELYANE BRIGHTLIGHT Courtesy of www.countrypark.com.au One thing that really annoys me is a herb or a nutrient going fad. People take them willy nilly for the wrong reason and the good reasons for which a certain herb has been used for centuries is forgotten. Take the infamous St John’s Wort (Hypericum) for instance, people are taking it for stress or depression and its use as an antiseptic and immune booster has completely been forgotten. On the other hand, everyone is starting to panic because St John’s Wort is also known to antagonise certain medications. If you are interested in treating a nervy horse however St John’s Wort is totally inappropriate as it causes photosensitivity in cattle and horses. So what to do to calm both horse and rider in a safe way? …do I have the herb for you! Lime Flowers, also known as Linden Flowers, botanical name Tilia, is the best, gentlest, safest and most effective lullaby tea. Two tablespoons in a cup (200mls) of hot water, brew for at least 10 minutes, add a teaspoon of honey and pop that in the horse’s feed and presto you soon will have a really cool horse. For the rider, two teaspoons per 200 mls

Calming teas can be extremely beneficial in soothing both horse and rider’s nerves.

water, made as a simple tea add sugar or honey. But wait there’s more! Tilia also contains what is known as mucilage and as such it has a soothing effect on the gut, so if you have a nervy horse with sensitive gut, never be without Tilia. For colic brew, a couple of handfuls of Tilia in a litre of water for 20mins, strain out the herb and keep offering it to the horse. For a fever, Tilia is also the best remedy to

safely bring down the temperature in beast, human and babies. Another beneficial herb is Lemon verbena, also a very safe and extremely delicious herb to soothe the nerves, it smells so good you’ll want to wear it. Keep Linden flowers and Lemon verbena in your herbal first aid and you will never look back. For more information on herbs and their uses visit www.countrypark.com.au

I believe that if the needs of the horse as a whole are met, you will achieve maximum benefit from your training, allowing the horse and rider to accomplish their goals and strengthen their bond, he said. The Gary Wells Practitioner Group are specialist practitioners in EMMETT4Horses, a gentle, non-invasive, light touch therapy technique, developed

for animals and humans by North Queenslander Ross Emmett and now practiced in 26 countries around the world. Benefits of the technique include improved balance, flexibility and muscle elasticity, reduced inflammation, relief from pain and discomfort, accelerated healing and achievement of consistent performance. Practitioners and owners alike find that horses are generally extremely receptive to the

EMMETT technique which provides a gentle, relaxing and calming effect, whilst relieving muscular issues most often with noticeable and immediate results not only in the horse’s posture and gait but often times in their attitude and demeanour also. GWPG is represented across Australia and has recently extended its reach to the United States to promote and provide EMMETT therapy and deliver training in the technique.

The EMMETT4Horses Practitioner course has no prerequisites to attend and is highly recommended for all horse owners wanting to better care for their animals as well as qualified complimentary therapists, veterinary and chiropractic professionals interested in extending their skills. “I believe every person who owns a horse‌ every kid at a pony club, every stablehand, every professional trainer, clinician or competitor should know this basic therapy technique. It will improve the care, wellbeing and performance of every horse and rider,â€? Gary said. Interested in finding out more about EMMETT4Horses? Light mask helps stimulate hormones The Equilume Light Mask is a fully mobile and automated device which allows the horse to live both out and indoors, including travelling, without any disruption. The Equilume™ Light Mask provides low level blue light to a single eye, on an automatic timer. This mobile, precision blue light, helps simplify your quest for success in coat condition for the show and competition horse, getting mare to cycle early and prompting mares to foal on time with optimum birth weights when lighting and stabling is not available. The mask contains a light sensor such that the blue light will only stay on for 30 seconds once activated until environmental light levels drop at dusk. When low light is detected the blue light will come on for the remainder of the seven hour active period. If initially activated at 4pm on the first day of light therapy, the light mask will automatically switch off at 11pm every night. Will acupuncture work for my animals? TAMARA SHEAD Equine Acupuncture Therapist. Acupuncture is a modality that has been tried and tested for hundreds of years. Animal acupuncture has recently grown in popularity and many pet owners are seeing amazing transformations in their pets conditions with this form of treatment. Ridestrong Therapy works closely with animal trainers, leading Australian veterinarians, chiropractors, EMMETT therapists and naturopaths. Working with other professionals ensures that you and your pet receive the best advice available and broadens our view of the animal and its environment as a whole. Acupuncture therapy is related to releasing areas of tension, pain and allowing the body to rebalance its energy and clear blockages which cause disease in the body. Through my own case studies, client appraisals and research I have found that acupuncture alone is particularly effective in dealing with muscular injury, atrophy and chronic pain etc. It may help manage and improve the outcome of conditions associated with paralysis, itch, laminitis, behaviour, arthritis and fertility among others, and the results are only amplified when combining modalities in an integrative approach. At the very heart of acupuncture therapy is the desire of the therapist to genuinely heal

and help the patient without any nasty side effects. So the question remains, is acupuncture therapy right for your pet? My answer to this is yes! Acupuncture is not only for sick animals, it is a safe form of natural medicine with endless benefits. From skin irritations to pain relief and as a preventative and immune boosting therapy, In saying this, an acupuncture therapist is in no way a replacement veterinarian and cannot diagnose conditions. We certainly will work alongside your vet with their diagnosis to achieve optimal results for your animal’s specific condition.

PERFECT FOR WINTER

Many of my clients ensure that their performance horse receives monthly treatments to ensure that their animal is pain free, balanced and reducing their risk of illness and injury. Ridestrong Therapy offers pre and post show treatments and can work with your training schedule. What happens in a treatment session? Our pets, like us, are all individuals and they may respond to a simple treatment or they may require a combination of treatment modalities to bring about healing either way the costs are the same. Ridestrong offers a range of holistic treatments. In a single treatment your animal can receive the benefits of Gua Sha (Chinese Scraping), acupressure massage, electro stimulation, Reiki, Moxabustion and cupping. A combination of therapy in one session certainly increases the healing effect for your pet and doesn’t interfere with drug therapy. Acupuncture is different to drug therapy - it certainly does not have the side effects drugs have. However, it can take a few treatments to see results as we are dealing with the cause rather than masking symptoms. Speak with your therapist about results, ask questions and stay open-minded. If it means changing up the treatment plan or collaborating with your vet this can always be done. For further information contact Tam@ridestrong.com.au or Ph 0434 814 076

Kidney and urinary tract disease By DAVID LOVELL BVSC Nothing fascinates horse owners more than the “colour” of their horse’s “wee” and yes, the colour, quantity, and character of the urine is very important. Understanding what you are seeing however, is not quite so simple. The true facts of the matter are that primary kidney and urinary tract disease in the horse fortunately is very rare. What we are seeing is almost always indicative of the function and normality of other body systems and an understanding of this is important to all horse owners. The kidney is an extremely important organ in all animals because it serves a critical function in the excretion of waste products from the body. If these toxic materials are not eliminated from the body, they build up and “poison” the system. Normal functioning kidneys are very important in the control and balance of the body electrolyte levels and nature has devised very intricate and com-

levels. Horses primarily are grass, forage, and grain eaters as opposed to other animals that have much higher protein diets and this is the reason that true kidney disease is relatively rare in the horse as it is protein breakdown chemicals that truly damage the kidneys. The horse’s diet, however, has very high quantities of minerals, salts, and ash materials and excess quantities of these agents are primarily excreted via the kidneys. For excretion to occur, the different chemicals have to be dissolved in solution for them to fil-

ter out of the body and it is this requirement for solubility that is responsible for the vast majority of so called “kidney” disease we see in the horse. Two key factors are necessary for solution. One is sufficient volume of fluid and the other is the pH or acidity of the urine. Obviously if the horse is dehydrated or down in total body water, the quantity of fluid to dissolve the salts is deficient and they can accumulate in the kidney tubules and bladder. Also, the normal horses urine is quite alkaline, (a function of the natural forage diet), and some of the salts require a more acid environment for solubility. Once again, excess mineral materials can build up in the kidneys and “clog” the tubules. This situation occurs very commonly in horses, particularly those on high grain or pellet diets, and the outcome of this is what we see as perceived kidney disease. Such horses are seen to stretch out, strain, and pass small quantities of urine, often being very thickened and displaying varying discolorations. Horses exhibiting such symptoms should have their diet and work programs evaluated. They are usually on higher concentrate feed, or have had a change of feed, or are in relatively hard work and possibly not drinking enough. Management attention to relative factors is important as well as providing proprietary kidney function mixtures and ensuring the horse is drinking. The problem is usually easily resolved. continued page 15

Tying -up and other urinary problems ‰ from page 14 Myoglobinuria is also a not uncommon condition of the urinary tract. True myoglobinuria results from a horse “Tying-Up which is a severe muscle disease from exertion where there is a lot of muscle damage and breakdown releasing myoglobin which is a muscle protein. This substance is excreted via the kidneys and causes a red or “port wine discolouration. Horses that have severe muscle exertion, but not necessarily Tying-Up can also have considerable muscle damage and these waste products can cause extra load on the kidneys. In these cases, urinary alkalising agents such as products containing sodium acid citrate are commonly given There are some serious primary diseases. One the more common would be calculi or “stones’. These vary from very big single stones down to many smaller ones. Bigger ones are more common in females and the smaller ones seem more common in males. Signs again include straining, small amounts often, blood, incontinence and staining the legs. Proper veterinary examination is required. Cystitis, or bladder inflammation occurs. This is rarely a primary bacterial problem, more often simply irritation of the bladder wall from high contents on insoluble crystals and mineral matter. Tumours are very rare. Actual kidney dis-

ease itself is quite rare, Most commonly occurs as a complication of severe endo-toxaemia and dehydration. A number of chemicals and plant poisonings can severely affect the kidney but these are not common.

There are some bacteria that can cause primary kidney disease, more often in younger animals and foals. Ruptured bladder in foals is relatively common due to trauma during the birthing process. “Urine Pooling in mares is relatively common and can be a cause of infertility. It occurs, often after several foals or when the mare gets older and the floor of the vagina sinks due to stretching. Some of the urine when voiding actually runs forward and pools on the floor of the anterior vagina. This results in inflammation and irritation and urine spills out as the horse moves staining the rear legs and tail. “Stall Wetters, or more correctly polyuria/polydyspia, can be very frustrating and difficult to treat. Once again, this is rarely a medical condition although there are a couple of diseases such as diabetes and Cushings disease that have to be considered. More often than not this is a behavioural problem and usually results from some form of stress to the horse. The horse begins to drink insatiably and over-hydrates. Obviously if they are drinking a lot, they will pass a lot of urine and the problem can keep cascading. It is a relatively common cause of poor performance in race horses. Each case has to be carefully evaluated and assessed. The horse is checked for possible disease and the management evaluated to see what can be changed.

Lucerne and feeding your horses Written by Equine ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist and SUZE GAZIA Equine Nutritionist Š2016

www.hiform.com.au

Much like the old story of Lucifer (archangel turned devil), lucerne as a feed for horses is either heralded as a hero of all feeds or an absolute villain. Yet again, the scare campaign about feeding lucerne seems to be rearing its head. Recently, we've been hearing that lucerne is providing an overload of potassium (coupled with low sodium), it can 'send their horses nuts' and contributes to laminitis, head-shaking, musculoskeletal problems and reproductive and growth problems. Conversely, there is plenty of information available about lucerne being a great supply of energy, high quality protein, high fibre, low starch and sugar, essential amino acids, macro minerals and some vitamins and trace minerals. So which is true? Lucerne can be a really great (and very safe) part of the diet for horses but like most ingredients, it is best used in moderation, matched to the horse's activity and in combination with other pastures, hays, hard feeds and/or supplements to help form a balanced diet. Most of the ailments listed above can all be attributed to feeding an unbalanced diet, and in particular over feeding energy or protein (important to note this is not just from lucerne, but from any source). You should look at including lucerne if your horse or pony needs some extra energy or protein, as it has higher levels than regular grass or cereal hays and chaffs. It also provides great, naturally high levels of calcium and magnesium, which is perfect if your horses are grazing on oxalate pastures, or being fed supplementary grain in their diets (which is naturally high in phosphorus).

Page 16

Lucerne can be a valuable addition to your horse’s diet when give in moderation. You may find, if your horse's energy and protein levels are already being met, or if you feed too much compared to the activity they are doing (working, breeding, growing etc), it can result in excess energy and protein, which can then lead to some of the issues noted earlier. Like most forages in Australia, additional mineral, trace mineral and vitamin supplementation will be required, due to the low concentrations normally contained. Additional salt, if not contained in your hard feed or supplement, added to the feed, or supplied as a salt lick, is an easy way to bring up the sodium (and chloride) levels if they are low in the diet. For horses that are susceptible, or have suffered from laminitis there is a very common misconception that lucerne is unsuitable. The risk of laminitis increases if horses/ponies are overweight, and excess energy and protein in the diet can contribute to weight gain so constantly monitoring the total energy and protein levels (and body condition) is important.

Provided this is kept in check, lucerne can be a valuable addition to these diets. It is often thought that lucerne contributes high levels of starch and sugar to the diet, where the opposite it generally true, with comparatively lower levels of both starch and sugars than other grass or cereal hays. Most forages (pasture, hay etc) will contain more potassium than the horse requires (with the exception of cereal hays), but luckily this is of very little concern, with the exception of horses HYPP (hyperkalemic periodic paralysis). The horse's kidneys are extremely efficient at removing the excess potassium and excreting it in urine and faeces. Provided horses have adequate water available, there should be no issues with excess potassium building up in the body. Studies have shown that horses given a diet with excess potassium and not enough water will refuse to eat, another safeguard to ensure potassium toxicity is avoided. We have been talking about the benefits of minerals and vitamins naturally found in lucerne, so let's look a little more deeply into the benefits of using the right minerals for your horse. The Importance of using the right Minerals Most horse owners, when they think of mineral salt supplements for horses, naturally enough, they think in terms mainly of electrolytes, of calcium, and of iron. But let's look at mineral and trace element use and needs both from the point of view of unrecognised therapeutic action, and from the importance of effective absorption and utilization. Some salts have a much wider action and use in the human and animal body than is generally recognized by most veterinary and medical authorities. Â Continued page 17

The Horse Report

Keep a balance of minerals in daily diet From page 16 Knowledge of these wider uses means that these minerals can be used more selectively in the case of a particular need or particular symptoms. Much of the known yet overlooked therapeutic information regarding common natural mineral salts... such as silica, calcium fluoride, calcium sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, iron phosphate, calcium phosphate, potassium phosphate, potassium chloride, magnesium phosphate, and zinc sulphate, comes from discoveries made in the 1800s by German doctors, particularly by Dr. W. H.Schuessler in 1873. He obtained his data from homoeopathic clinical trials or 'provings' involving thousands of human volunteers, mostly university students, who imbibed both large and small doses of a variety of triturated (finely ground) mineral salts to establish optimal therapeutic effect. It was found that the above minerals in small doses, often in combination with others, have repeatable therapeutic effects beyond the standard, widely known uses of these simple mineral salts. These were found to be particularly helpful in individuals with suboptimal nutrition, meaning individuals who were not getting enough minerals from their diet and this is becoming an increasing issue with horses in particular due to severe climate changes including drought. These minerals represent the core of the socalled '12 Tissue Salts', originally described and utilized by Dr. Schuessler. Secondly, of utmost importance is the form of the salt in which the mineral is delivered to the animal. Not all calcium's are the same, not all irons are the same, etc. We already know that there are many different salts of one particular mineral and that it can have significantly different effects both in terms of absorption/ utilization of the actual mineral, and also in terms of a specific therapeutic action. Calcium as an example, which is needed in the highest levels in horses, does not occur naturally as the metal calcium, but occurs in nature as various salts. The main natural-occurring calcium salts are calcium carbonate, the most common form, (chalk, limestone, marble, and dolomite); calcium sulphate (gypsum); calcium fluoride (fluorspar); and calcium phosphate (complexed as apatite and organic bonemeal). Calcium carbonate is the cheapest but is poorly absorbed in most cases, compared to calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite complex), which is well absorbed and utilized, perhaps because its animal source gives it the inherent balance most suited to animal absorption. Calcium fluoride, on the other hand is toxic in large quantities and therefore is not suitable as a source of calcium. However, it has important therapeutic value when used as a trace element. This natural form of fluoride not only is use-

A balanced daily diet is the best way to keep your horse healthy. ful in arthritis and 'splints', helping break up exostoses and indurated glands, but also strengthens prolapsed muscle and veins, helping to re-establish elasticity. Calcium sulphate, also is not well tolerated or absorbed as a bulk source of calcium. But it also has therapeutic value in small-dispersed doses, particularly helpful in suppuratives conditions such as chronic thick, yellow and lumpy mucus discharges, recurrent abscesses and poor healing after injury. Several laboratory prepared salts of calcium are also in wide use and some of these also show good absorption compared to calcium carbonate. Most useful of these are the chelated calcium's, combined to amino acids and other organic nutrients such as calcium orotate and calcium gluconate. However, these do not provide the inherent needed phosphate balance found in the organic calcium phosphate complex. Another interesting example is Sodium and three of its salts. Generally there are no problems with the absorption of any sodium salts. All sodium salts are involved in fluid balance. Sodium chloride, common salt, is essential to maintain normal osmotic fluid pressure both within and outside of cells, as well as facilitating normal nerve conduction. Sodium sulphate (Glauber's salts) when given in small doses of the order of 5-10 gram per day for horses has a diuretic action, shifting excess fluid from the tissues and bloodstream, stimulating both kidney action and bile production. Excessive doses however, only act as a bowel purgative, as do excessive doses of Epsoms salts. Sodium phosphate has different properties again. It is useful also in similar small doses, but more than other sodium salts, aids the breakdown of excess tissue lactic acid and promotes water absorption. Also it is effec-

tive in reducing gastric acidity. The next example, iron, presents a common absorption problem for many horses. A wide variety of laboratory-prepared iron salts are on the market, and these have varying success with individual animals. It is usually the cases that the horses which are in the greatest need of iron supplementation are those which absorb it poorly and are often intolerant of iron supplements. Consequently, the cheapest, Ferrous sulphate, is not recommended, it being quite toxic to the liver when absorbed. It also inhibits protein digestion, is mostly unabsorbed, and irritates the gastrointestinal mucosa even in small doses. Other commonly used salts are ferrous gluconate, ferric citrate, ferrous fumarate and other iron amino acid chelates. The amino acid chelate forms appear to be the least toxic and are fairly well absorbed. However the form of iron chosen by Hi Form is iron phosphate which is a complex and consists of a complexed mixture of mainly ferrous phosphate, with ferric phosphate and ferrous oxide. Iron Phosphate also only contains a small percentage of iron and is well absorbed and tolerated. It is not only useful in iron-deficiency anaemia, but also has a clear anti-inflammatory action, reduces fever and local hyperaemia when given in small, frequently repeated doses. When the nutritional intake is balanced on a daily basis your horse’s health improves dramatically! Hi Form Australia produces unique, highly effective and safe formulas for horses and continually looks at improving our formulas based on solid scientific evidence. Taking the reins with colt starting clinic By ANTHONY DESREAUX Having just returned from participating in an invitational colt start at Buck Brannaman’s personal home the Houlihan ranch at Sheridan in the US state of Wyoming, I was ready to start my own colt start clinic. Monday, June 20 wasn’t a great start to the eight day colt start at the Attunga Rodeo grounds just outside Tamworth. It was pouring rain and freezing cold, so day one was postponed until the next day. Tuesday, the colt start began by instructing 12 students in the art of colt starting. Colt starting is the starting of young horses under saddle (known also as breaking a horse in). These students hailed from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. They all work in various fields such as accountancy, carpentry, cutting industry, singer, self employed and even one was from the armed forces. I had each student start by catching their chosen horse and having them working off a rope halter and a 12ft lead rope or a 45ft lariat. I want the young horses to learn about feel and how to come off pressure. I do this by asking and releasing, to follow a feel and reward the slightest try. This is where I show students how to get in time with the horse’s feet, so that they would ask at the right time and giving the horse the better deal - mak-

ing the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult. Having ridden in colt starting clinics under the tuition of master horsemen and mentors Ray Hunt and Buck Brannaman, I have now been teaching horsemanship and colt starting for a few years but this is my first colt start clinic that has been opened up to the public riders to participate in. Normally I would do them with staff when formerly managing a large cattle station in far South West Queensland. The students varied in abilities from very experienced riders to some who had as little as nine months riding under their belt. They all were shown what to do and then they would work on the exercises that were given getting these young horses accepting of them the humans, the saddles, bridles and the grand finally of having a rider mount and move them about. Some were on their colts on day one and the rest by day two. They followed instructions of how to get a soft feel when riding and having the horse listen to the life in the rider’s body and down to the horses feet. It’s all about controlling the feet. During the clinic they endured cold weather, rain, mud but all seemed to enjoy every bit of it. The horses come along very well and where being ridden out around the Attunga rodeo grounds and exposed to vehicles, open space, buildings and being in a herd and being separated from the herd, they were introduced to a small herd of steers and some we exposed to having a lariat swung off them. Those who chose to introduce a lariat were swinging loops off them, towing witches hats

around with others following the dragging hat. On the last two days, the horses were trailered out to my personal property where they were ridden out in paddocks and along the creek bed and dam side. Each horse presenting with problems that I was able to instruct the rider on how they could fix the situation to help the horses. As a group, on the last day seeing them ride out along the roadside and up to the top of a small mountain on neighbouring

acreage was very pleasing. One participant who has investments in cutting horses had never ridden outside an arena. The young horses all had a terrific start and the participants walked away with a whole lot more knowledge. They all were giving positive feedback and were happy being provided with great teachings, hot meals at night and a whole lot more knowledge and tools in their tool bags to work with future horses. This will become an annual event for my business, Reata Ranch Horsemanship. I travel all over Australia teaching four day horsemanship clinics as well as several 10 day cow working clinics. I will do a colt start clinic in Tasmania in December at the Stonehenge Horse Riding facility and accommodation in Oatlands Tasmania. For more information on where upcoming clinics will be, check out the website www.reataranch10.com or call 0407731187

The Horse Report

Are you a pro-active or re-active rider By TANJA KRAUS This is an interesting topic, because most of us probably don't think too much about it. The fact is its really important, and if you do spend the time to think about it, and you decide that you are currently re-active and you take the steps to change your habits and become pro - active and it will probably change your riding forever. Let me try to explain. When I'm riding particularly if I'm out on the trail, but when I'm in the arena too, I'm always looking to anticipate two or three steps ahead. I’m still very present with the horse, but I am looking out for things that may arise, and that I may have to act upon. For example, in the arena it may be as simple as an upcoming corner that I have to balance the horse and prepare for. Out on the trail it may be picking the right path for my horse - my trails have lots of rocks, crevices, creek crossings, tree branches - so If I'm cantering along I need to prepare to put my horse in the right place to keep him, and me, safe. To take it a step further - what about the unexpected? What about surprises that can come up that are not in our control? Well, I do my best to prepare and be ready for them - this isn't the same as riding along being nervous that my horse may do something. Take a race car driver (or even us driving to the shops) - we are (or should be) driving

defensively. This isn't to say we are looking for crashes - but it is to say we understand we aren't in control of the drivers around us, and we need to be prepared to take evasive action. So how do I prepare for surprises when it comes to being out on the trail or in the arena ? 1. Be Present. Don't be riding along talking to friends, or in a daydream - pay attention to where you are going, where you are putting your horses feet. I’m not saying don't enjoy the ride, but I am saying, its not the rollercoaster at seaward - you can't just sit there and know what bends and turns are going to happen. 2. Assess potential problems and take Pro Action. For example - on our trail there is a

bridge. Nine times out of 10 ducks fly out from under the bridge just as I approach. I make sure that I am in a good seat, feet in stirrups, paying attention and on a soft feel rein - this way, if my horse does react, I am ready to take action. The actions aren't the same as - gather up my reins, tense up, slow my horse down and start looking for ducks this will get your horse tense and looking for boogie men! 3. Practice my one rein stop (or my evasive action) when I don't need it - so when I do need it - I know what to do, and the horse knows what to do. You should be able to do a one rein stop at the walk, trot and canter. 4. Use my senses! When I'm out on the trail, I can hear a motor bike from a mile away - and if I need to I can get off. If I see a flock of birds take off nearby, I think to myself - something scared them - maybe it will scare my horse too. Be mindful of your surroundings. 5. Read my horse. If his head goes up, ears prick, he stops, he turns, he tenses, he starts breathing heavy - all of these are indicators that something is upsetting him - so if he does one or a combination of a few, I know I need to start helping him, its going to get messy. 6. Keep busy. Don't disconnect from your horse by ignoring him for long stretches at a time - touch base with him and keep communication lines open - practice laterals, verticals and core skills. A pro-active rider has a much better chance of keeping themselves and their horse safe.

Pony Club NSW hosts Combined State Championships The Pony Club NSW 2016 Combined State Championships were held at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park in Camden from July 2-10. For the first time, six championships were held at the one venue across nine days, with Showjumping, Showriding, Jumping Equitation, Dressage, and Combined Training disciplines. The event attracted more than 400 riders and their families from all over NSW and some parts of Queensland and Victoria. All six championships determined the highest point scoring riders in each age group with winners presented with a sash, trophy, Mitavite Feed Prize and Kersey Wool Rug thanks to Horseland. With the Cross Country course at Bicentennial Equestrian Park out of action, the annual One Day Event Championship was re-adjusted as the Advanced Combined Training Championship, with riders competing in Dressage and Showjumping phases slightly more difficult than the straight Combined Training Championships. With just three Age Groups, Anna Roper from Mangrove Mountain was awarded the 13 & Under 15 Years Age Champion, Macy Reen claimed the 15 & Under 17 Years age group, and Eleanor Miller from Canberra Riding Club was announced as the Associate

Australia aims to continue Games success Equestrian sports date back more than 2000 years but their introduction into the modern Olympics was in Paris in 1900. The Olympic Equestrian Centre for the 2016 Games at Deodoro south of Rio’s city centre was built for the 2007 Pan American Games and modernised and expanded. The onemillion-square-metre facility hosts the jumping and dressage arena, cross-country course and horse and trainer accommodation. A fixture of every Summer Olympics since 1912, equestrian is one of just three Olympic sports where men and women compete against one another (the others being sailing and ‘mixed doubles’ in Badminton); it is also the only sport that involves two athletes horse and rider. At the Olympic Games there are three different equestrian competitions, known as disciplines, they are: Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. At the Paralympic Games, only Dressage is contested. Australia first competed in Equestrian at an Olympic Games in 1956. Although the Games were hosted in Melbourne, due to quarantine the Equestrian competition was held in Stockholm, Sweden. The Australian Eventing team of Wyatt 'Bunty' Thompson, Brian Crago, John Winchester, David Wood and Ernie Barker finished a very respectable fourth. At the 56 Games, Australia was also represented by Albert Jacobs in the Jumping. It did not take long for Australia to cement its position as a leading nation in Eventing and four years later at the Rome Olympic Games the team of Laurie Morgan, Neale Lavis, Bill Roycroft and Brian Crago famously won team gold with Morgan taking home individual gold and Lavis individual silver. Since then Australia has continued to excel in Eventing at the Olympics and has won 11 Olympic medals including six gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Australia first competed in Equestrian at a

OXENFORD GALA HACK DAY The Oxenford Pony Club will host a Gala Hack day on August 28 and the program has Gold Coast equine enthusiasts excited. "Our Gala Hack day has been organised to ensure that successful competitors will qualify to compete at a Royal Show and for this reason alone we expect that the competition will be high," Oxenford Pony Club chief instructor, Lyn Lynch said. "Many pony hack and galloway riders will be keen to compete for a win in an open at our event because if they are successful this will add to the number of open wins they need to compete at any Royal Show. "I know that riders work very hard throughout the year to prepare their horses and ponies for hack shows and I can guarantee that this event won't disappoint. "I am very proud that we have been able to attract well respected and qualified judges. In doing so we have lifted the level of this event to a day that will make competitors and their supporters proud. "However the program offers a class for almost everyone - from the dedicated Hack rider to the beginner child rider, and if you love to see beautifully turned out horses and ponies spectators are most welcome." There will be prize money to third place, trophies and prizemoney for Supreme and a memorial trophy for the Best Presented The Gala Hack Day is on August 28 at the Oxenford Pony Club. Gates open at 6am and ring events start at 8am sharp. For inquiries, contact 07 5596 6061 or 0414 676 578.

GOLD COAST SHOW HORSE EVENTS The Gold Coast Show Society are happy to announce a two day off site equestrian event, to be held at Rivermead Equestrian and Events Centre, Guanaba on September 10 and 11. Originally the show society had wanted to hold the equestrian event on July 30 and 31, but it meant there would be no show jumping due to the World Cup championships being held at that time. These dates also clashed with the Pine Rivers Show. After much discussion, it was decided that the show society really could not hold the equestrian event without the show jumping - having not had the event for the past two years due to relocation. The new schedule should be online shortly which will include show jumping classes. For further updates visit their Facebook page Horses at Gold Coast Show 2016 Page 31

The Horse Report

No cattle class travel for Olympic horses It’s not just athletes and officials who are arriving in Rio ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games but also some very special equestrian stars as well. The first of nine shipments of horses left London at the end of last month with 34 horses from 10 nations on board. In total, more than 200 horses will be flown into Rio International Airport en route to the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Deodoro Olympic Park. The flights will come from three destinations - Stansted (Great Britain), Liege (Belgium) and Miami (USA). The competing horses and their riders will represent 43 nations from around the globe in the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Jumping and Eventing. There are some interesting stats when it comes to ‘flying horses”: Baggage allowance: Just like human flights, each equine passenger has an allocated baggage allowance, by weight – however this includes the horse itself! Plus water, hay, 30kg shavings as bedding, water buckets, feed buckets, tack bags (for saddles

Transporting horse to the Olympics takes plenty of planning.

and bridles), rugs and any spare equipment. Each horse is also allowed: one large haynet, water and his or her own personal bucket, and a small overnight bag with a spare headcollar (halter) and rug, in case it gets chilly. In-flight meals and drinks: Bran mash (a bit like porridge) before they get on the flight, then hay and water throughout the flight. Some like apple juice in their water to make it a bit tastier Passports: Every horse has a passport but, unlike human athletes, they must be

microchipped to travel. They all also have an export health certificate. In-flight wear: Horses, like people, like to travel in comfort. Some may wear a light rug but generally wear as little as possible to stay cool and comfortable. Most will wear protective leg gear – a bit like flight socks! Check-in: Flights are a carefully orchestrated operation so checkin is a very civilised affair. All have arrival slots at the airport so that vet checks can be carried out, and loading follows a specific planned order. First Class/Business/Economy:

All Olympic horses travel in style, in 112cm wide stalls, with two horses per pallet – the human equivalent of business class. This gives them plenty of room to feel comfortable, but there is the option to upgrade to first class. Cabin crew: Specially trained staff fly with the horses, looking after their welfare, comfort and safety. They are known as Flying Grooms. Stallions at the front: Stallions travel at the front of the plane so they aren’t distracted on-flight by the mares. Is there a doctor on board?: There are always vets on board to ensure happiness and comfort throughout. Aircraft facts: The horses fly in a freight plane, and one especially equipped for the safe and comfortable transport of horses. It has custom-designed horse stalls and controlled temperature zones to ensure maximum comfort and minimal stress for the horses and comes complete with trained and experienced expert personnel who know how to handle horses.
