Kilkivan saddles up for 30th Great Horse Ride The small town of Kilkivan in south east Queensland will come alive to sound of hooves when more than 1000 horses an riders take part in the 30th annual Kilkivan Great Horse Ride. Held over the weekend of April 10-12, the ride takes participants through the picturesque countryside of the Kilkivan shire and ends with the impressive grand parade through the town. Kilkivan is one of the few towns actually situated on the BiCentennial National Trail, which runs from Cooktown to Victoria. The Kilkivan Great Horse Ride was first suggested by Widgee grazier and former Kilkivan Shire councillor Fabian Webb, who wanted people of all ages and riding ability, from all walks of life, to get involved with a recreational ride through the scenic country which makes up Kilkivan Shire. In 1988 the Queensland opening of the National Trail was incorporated into the ride and legendary late R M Williams was among the riders who followed the trail. Street activities provide fun and entertainment in Kilkivan while spectators await the arrival of the horses. Following the parade, riders can relax at the Tom Grady Campfire Concert at the Kilkivan showgrounds, with a fully licensed bar and catering by local community groups. Breakfast will be available for purchase on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Friday is a day for setting up and getting ready with camping facilities at the showgrounds and entertainment that night. On Saturday, April 11, there will be three trail rides: - The Hanging Rock trail which commences at 7.30am and covers 35km through the ranges from Widgee to Kilkivan - The Mudlo Train which also

starts at 7.30am and is 35km through the Mudlo Gap and National Park, and - The Rossmore 1/2 Trail which starts at noon and covers 10km of the Bicentennial National Trail and is ideal for first timers, older horses and younger participants. Sunday will be fun day run by the Kilkivan Pony Club and will feature pony club events for all ages. The rides will have the SES and St Johns on the trails for support and supervision and their instructions must be adhered to. The ride is held in honour of Fabian Webb on the famous Webb Brothers who lived at Thornside. Fabian, who was a councillor in the Kilkivan Shire for 37 years instigated the first ride back in 1986 which attracted more than 200 riders. Since then, it has grown in scope and numbers and the grand parade through the town at 4pm on Saturday afternoon attracts huge spectator crowds, eager to see so many horses gathered in one location. Entertainment this year will be provided by country band, the Hillbilly Goats. This is a truly unique event and is open to riders of all abilities. Murrurundi gears up for the King of the Ranges Final preparations are being made in Murrurundi in readiness for the 2015 King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival from April 30 to May 3. The King of the Ranges was inspired by the Snowy River Challenge at Corryong in Victoria. During those early discussions a skilled stockman from the early 1900s named Bung McInnes was mentioned, being known as “King of the Ranges� when working round Moonan and the Barrington Tops. Corryong had The Man from Snowy River and now Murrurundi had the King of the Ranges! The King of the Ranges Stockmen’s Challenge and Bush Festival is a celebration of Australian stockman and woman, showcasing the traditional skill they use daily but set in a highly competitve environment. There are six primary events, cattle work, pack horse, bareback obstacle, whip cracking, cros country jumping and horse shoeing to determine the top 10 finalists. The finalist then have to catch and lead a wild horse and ride a buckjumper to claim the title of King of the Ranges. but there is no compulsion. Horses in nature do not have shoes. It has only been the requirements of domestication that has necessitated the application of shoes to the horse’s feet. Conventional wisdom has it that the reason we shoe is because of the “hard work” that horses perform for their masters. I am not sure that this is necessarily correct. Standardbred pacers probably do more work than most domestic animals. It is not uncommon for them to jog up to 10 miles, each and every day, usually on a very hard track, and the shoes placed on their feet are minimal in size and thickness, (weight on racing horses feet become a handicap among other things). There are many devotees of “barefoot” trimming and many horses can get by with this if the correct circumstances apply. The key element in this discussion is blood supply and circulation to the foot. Wild horses roam and travel many miles each day for survival. Trotters force many litres and litres of blood through their feet every day. Domestication of horses for human pleasures usually means that the animal is confined in a relatively small area, feed and water is supplied, often work and training is minimal or intermittent, and the circulation to the horse’s feet stagnates resulting in poor growth and quality of the hoof. If we return to the Wikipedia definition, farriery also implies application of knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the feet to shoeing. This is the element that is often missing from the skill set of

`What is corrective shoeing?’ Probably the more important question is `What is Correct Shoeing?’ Wikepedia defines a farrier as a specialist in equine hoof care, including the trimming and balancing of horse’s hooves, and the placing of shoes on their hooves, if necessary. A farrier combines some blacksmith' skills (fabricating, adapting, and adjusting metal shoes) with some veterinarian's skills (knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb) to care for horses' feet. In Australia, there is no registration or licencing of farriers and consequently any individual is free to refer to themselves as a farrier. Modern day farriers usually specialize in horseshoeing, focusing their time and effort on the care of the horse's hoof. For this reason, farriers and blacksmiths are considered to be in separate, albeit related, trades. Historically, the jobs of farrier and blacksmith were practically synonymous and would have
many horse-shoers. Even those formally trained in Australia are possibly not given enough education in basic biomechanics of the feet which means the “functional” anatomy and physiology of how the feet work. I have been fortunate to work in the equine field for well over 40 years and have known, and been associated with, a very large number of farriers. I am proud to count many of them as my best friends. I do not believe there is any such thing as a “bad” farrier. Most of the individuals involved all consider themselves to be competent and believe that they do as good a job as possible. What is “bad” farriery? For that matter, what is “good” farriery? Probably the only measureable decipher can be outcome, ie that the horse continues to function effectively. Fortunately a very large number of horses are able to perform successfully with whatever shoes are on their feet. This is not necessarily “good” farriery, more accurately it is “effective” farriery, and the vast majority continue on in their career. Certainly, almost all farriers would consider themselves to be very good at corrective shoeing, but what exactly is corrective shoeing. I would think that corrective shoeing implies dealing with a specific foot problem that is deemed to be “incorrect”. Last month I defined podiatry as “The science concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders, injuries, and anatomic defects of the foot”. Therefore it would follow that “corrective” shoeing implies podiatry, and this should mean we are dealing with a specific foot problem. Unfortunately the horse is prone to a very large number and variety of hoof problems, the majority of which are potentially career limiting, and in many cases can affect the ability of the horse to live and function pain free and without constant supervision, medication, and treatment. It is incredible what we can achieve these days with proper diagnosis and the development of a therapeutic treatment plan. It can be miraculous in the way that we turn some horses around.

However, the most important point that I want to make, is that if the horse has progressed to the point where there are objectively definable pathological parameters, then almost always, they “can never be cured”. This is a big statement but unfortunately it is true. Each case and circumstance is different, and needs to be evaluated, but some conditions for example would include lameness such as navicular disease, pedal osteitis, and ringbone. We can do much to help the horse but the underlying problem is always there. Chronic laminitis, keratomas, and serious injuries and lacerations are in a similar category. Dealing with problems such as these are very challenging and rewarding to the practitioner or team involved. This is true “corrective” shoeing. The problem is that owners do not understand that the problem is never going to go away. The implication is that every four to six weeks, specialty shoeing and farriery has to be repeated to maintain the horse.
Dung beetles are hard little workers that can save horse owners much time. Allowing dung beetles to bury the manure in paddocks is a natural way to get rid of the manure, leading to improved soil health and pasture growth. Horse SA has prepared the new website for horse owners, which provides information on promoting dung beetle health and land care through reducing the use of chemicals and adoption of sustainable land care principles. Dung beetles have many benefits including helping to control the infective stages of a horse’s gut worms and other pests such as dung-breeding flies. An active beetle population will also save horse owners time cleaning up after horses as well as improving pastures. Dr. Bernard Doube of Dung Beetle Solutions Australia, worked with Horse SA to develop eight new “Horses, Bugs and Beetles” fact sheets that underpin the website information but the information can be applied around the country. Corrective shoeing can only go so far into addressing problem feet. Owners must be aware that managing foot problems requires ongoing shoeing on a regular basis.
The cost becomes exorbitant and people do not fully understand this when starting. We can manage and improve the horse but as soon as the commitment and intensity reduce, the horse returns back to where we started. Owners become frustrated and disappointed. Rightly so, but the problem stems from lack of a proper perspective of what we were dealing what our expectations should be. Podiatry and dealing with problem feet is what I love most, but
it is essential that each case is properly evaluated and a realistic outline of prognosis is given. So, I asked the question, “What is Corrective Shoeing?” Hopefully I have answered this. What I believe to be more appropriate is to define “correct shoeing” and exactly what this means and how we go about it. I feel this concept is fundamental in hopefully doing the very best for our horse and maintaining him in optimum “soundness”. I will address this in a future article.

Tom Quilty ride celebrates 50th anniversary The Tom Quilty Gold Cup Endurance Ride National Championship is the premier ride on the endurance calendar in Australia. The prestige associated with winning this event, as well as competing, is immense. It is the goal of all Australian endurance riders to attempt and be successful in this ride. The original Tom Quilty gold cup is held in the ‘Stockman’s Hall of Fame’ in Longreach QLD as the inception of the Quilty Cup ride was nurtured by Queenslanders Erica and RM Williams who loved their distance riding and their beloved Arabian horses. The Quilty was named after RM’s old mate Tom Quilty of Spring Vale Station in the Kimberley Ranges of WA, who on request donated the valuable gold cup. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup and of endurance riding in Australia. In celebration, the Quilty, run on June 6 and 7, is returning to where it all started – the Hawkesbury district of NSW. The 160km course traverses scenic National Park, private

farms, and country roads, and will follow some historic National Park trails that have been specially re-opened for this event. The ride base is located directly on the banks of the magnificent Hawkesbury River, just north of Sydney. The venue will be the Del Rio
Riverside Resort set on 3kms of river frontage at Wisemans Ferry surrounded by a majestic mountainous backdrop and only 1.5 hours from Sydney. Del Rio Resort has previously hosted the NSW State Championships in 2007, the UAE Australian Challenge FEI 200km in 2002 along with some
standard AERA rides. More than 350 horses will be involved with riders coming from both Australia and overseas to compete in this special anniversary event. Last year in Western Australia, Queensland rider, Jessica Langridge, competing in the middleweight division was aboard Tarrangower Crescendo aka Saladin (18-year-old gelding out of Minkott Crystal Belle by Arabian Park Saiyid) crossed in 1st position in 9hrs 13mins 25secs, earning Jessica her first Tom Quilty Gold Cup win. A 200 page pictorial celebration of 50 years of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup event, incorporating interviews and 'where are they now' updates of all surviving Cup winners and photo collages from all Tom Quilty events. Nutrition for your pregnant mare Supplied by EQUINE VIT & MIN
As we move into autumn, the excitement of finding out that your mare is pregnant may be wearing off. But have you thought about what you’ll need to feed her from now until she foals? Provided your mare was in good condition, and being fed a well balanced forage-based diet supplemented with high quality protein and a vitamin and mineral supplement to fill any gaps and correct mineral ratios, her dietary needs will not visibly alter much for the first six months of pregnancy. However, if she is lacking in energy or vitamins and minerals, her body will ‘mine’ its own resources to give these to the growing foetus. The first rule of good horse nutrition is to feed plenty of roughage – pasture, hay or chaff. Unless your mare is overweight, it is safe to feed as much grassbased roughage as she will eat. If your mare needs an energy source such as grain or pellets to continue in light work or to maintain weight, then you

should continue to feed it and carefully monitor her body condition. Your mare needs to be a healthy weight (not too heavy, not too light) to maintain a healthy pregnancy, but her body’s requirement for energy throughout pregnancy remains close to her need when spelling or in light work. Pregnant, lactating and growing horses need high quality protein in their diets – especially for lysine, a key amino acid which
they are unable to produce in their bodies. Soybean meal is one commonly used ingredient to add lysine to breeding horse feeds. During the last three months of pregnancy, your mare will need 50% more lysine than usual (a 600kg mare needs 46g of lysine/day at 11 months gestation). Your pregnant mare’s need for some minerals is higher than when spelling and in some cases, is higher than when per-
forming very heavy exercise. The main increase for mineral nutrition relates to calcium and phosphorous, which are needed in increasing amounts as the pregnancy progresses; and for copper, iron and iodine in the last three months. As with mineral supplementation in all classes of horses, it is imperative that your pregnant mare obtains all the minerals she needs, in carefully balanced ratios from all food sources. Assessing a horse’s comfort during the cooler months is essential in preventing a loss of condition.
rugged it is important to ensure that you begin using a warmer rug at night when the temperatures begins to drop, this will help to maintain a good body temperature. If your horses are out on pasture for 24 hours and are rugged this will certainly provide some protection from rain, wind and cold temperatures, however your horse should still have access to windbreaks, shelter beneath trees or a box in the paddock. Make sure you assess your horse’s comfort level during the day if possible, for example is your horse shivering, does he appear to be too warm and is he sweating? You may need to change his rugs from time to time to ensure that none of the above occurs. Most importantly it is the night-time that your horse will require further warmth, as temperatures around Australia, depending on the area, may drop excessively low. It is very common for horses to lose weight at this time of the year; sometimes the winter
coat appears to give more coverage and can be a bit deceiving. So assessing your horse’s body condition throughout the cooler months is essential. Don’t wait for the horse’s body condition to drop too low for you do something about it. It is very common for horses to lose condition in the cooler months no matter how high the body condition is during spring and summer. You should still be able to feel the last three or four ribs through light pressure if you need to apply more pressure to feel the ribs it is possible that your horse maybe a little overweight If there is a loss of body condition you need to increase the horses feed, this should begin by increasing the roughage component of the feed. It is also very important to check the amount of water that your horse is drinking on a daily basis if possible. Continued Page 15

Australia has had a very dry summer. Pasture is limited in many areas, so it has been necessary to feed our horses a higher level than normal. Going into the winter months means we have to prepare our horses by altering our feed programs changing the way we are rugging our horses and possibly altering our work programs. In some areas of Australia, the level of feed has been excessively low due to the dry summer and very low rainfall, we have spent a great deal of time assisting these horse owners in areas where feed has been depleted. High levels of roughage have been extremely important in this situation and continue to be important heading into the colder weather. Because the summer has been so dry there is less pasture around than in previous seasons. In the northern parts of Australia it has been more significant. As we have travelled around Australia conducting seminars on equine nutrition we have been told many stories of hardship and difficulties achieving good body condition with their horses, with the colder weather our horse’s coats will begin to change adjusting to different circumstances ahead. Many horses are rugged during all months of the year, some horses are stabled and many other horses are not rugged or stabled. Depending on the situation your horses are located will affect how you will feed your horse in the cooler months. Fortunately we are not like some European winters where it can be freezing cold this is the reason why many horses are stabled 24/7, not the ideal but sometimes unavoidable. For those horses that are used to being

If the water is cold this may discourage your horse from consuming a normal amount of water each day. If your horse does not consume a sufficient amount of water the horse may become dehydrated and this could lead to colic. Always make sure that the water provided to your horse is kept clean, scrubbing out your water trough every one to two weeks is an ideal way to maintain this. During heavy rain falls in winter horses may ingest mud, dirt and other particles, and therefore bacteria in particular if water has been lying stagnant for a number of days. A good pro and prebiotic treatment is highly recommended should this occur. Feeding your horse the correct diet in the winter months is not difficult to achieve, always remember that a high roughage diet is the most important part of the management of your horse’s feed program. Providing plenty of good quality hay is essential, this can be in the form of lucerne, oaten, or pasture hay providing it is good quality. Generally speaking our horses are worked less during the cooler months due to inclement weather, unless you are lucky to have an indoor arena. So bearing this in mind many horse owners tend to turn the horse out during this time, this does not mean that you stop feeding your horse correctly and if you are using a daily supplement it would be advised to continue a low maintenance dose

when your horse is turned out. By doing so, when you bring your horse back into work, he will be much better prepared. For those of you, like me, who will be continuing working their horses through the cooler months, feeding your horse will be based on the workload, the type of horse, sex of the horse and many other factors.
Winter diets need to be based on your horse’s workload.
A good high roughage pellet such as the Johnson’s natural formula is one that I highly recommend; it is a clean feed with no additives or by-products. This product is steamed and compressed and the quality of the hays and grains used in this pellet is grade one export. There is a feed to suit any purpose depending on your horse’s workload. For a horse working four and a half hours per week, I will use one of my own horses as an example to provide you exactly what I would be feeding him during the winter months based on working these hours. Rotsi is a warmblood by Rotspon and is 14- years-old, he is 16hh. Rotsi would normally have four to five 45 minute sessions per week and he is a dressage horse. He receives in the morning one slab of top-quality compressed oaten hay. At night he receives 1 ½ kg of Johnsons Alfalfaplus and one kg of Velocity 2 and slab of topquality compressed oaten hay in his box at night. The nutritional value of these
feeds is exceptionally high due to the quality provided so therefore a large feed is not required, hence he only has one hard feed per day. I also use the Next Generation Oxydane pellets, ProflamAid Plus joint supplement and BioEquus Synbiotic (pro-and prebiotic). This diet is very simple but will ensure that he maintains good body condition, is able to perform his work and is easily adjusted if needed. What’s Happening INTERSCHOOL QUEENSLAND SHOWCASE Come and Try Competition Saturday 18 April 2015 Open to all junior riders (current EQ members and those that become restricted members for the day) the Interschool Queensland (IQ) Showcase has a range of classes suitable for lead line and beginner riders. Includes classes in Dressage, Show Jumping and Show Horse- both assisted and unassisted classes available- something for everyone! With classes from leadline through to the starting level for IQ competitions, this event will give participants the opportunity to 'come and try' some of the sports Interschool Queensland offers in a fun, friendly and supportive environment. Coaches and judges will introduce riders to the sport, giving a short talk prior to the class commencing to discuss some of the important aspects of the sport, including how to enter a dressage arena, how to salute the judge, what it means if the bell rings, how to ride a jumping course and how to ride a show horse workout. This is a fantastic opportunity for all riders new to interschool, or thinking about joining interschool in the future, to experience a competition in a relaxed environment, and get valuable feedback from judges and EQ staff about riding at a competition! This event is open to all EQ members and non Equestrian Queensland members, who upon the completion of a Restricted Membership Form which includes a Liability Waiver Form become Restricted EQ Event Members for the day. Come and Try Days have been trialled by other disciplines very successfully at certain events across the calendar. It gives Queensland members the opportunity to showcase their sport to others that have not attended a recent Interschool Queensland event. 78TH MALENY AGRICULTURAL SHOW 2015 marks the 78th Maleny Agricultural Show, held on Friday & Saturday 29th & 30th May. There are two full days of horse events in the main ring, an entertainment arena featuring a Small Farmers Feature on both days as well. The Small Farmers Feature this year is themed around Dairy. There will be local cattle, camel and buffalo dairy farmers giving presentations about life on their farms, and then local milk producers speaking about what they do with the milk once in the processing plant. Cheese makers and judges will be giving masterclasses, as well as chef's doing cooking demonstrations. There will be plenty of free kids activities as well at the Small Farmer Tent, including a smoothie station where the kids can create their own dairy smoothies. At the Dairy Pavilion this year we have a Pure Jersey Feature Show over both days, and the Stud Beef cattle are also on show both days. In the main ring on Friday night will be a laser spectacular show, motorcycle stunt show, and of course the monster fireworks. On Saturday night in the main ring we have the Gill Brothers Rodeo featuring Open and Novice bull rides, Saddle Broncs, Mule Challenge and Barrel Races. The woodchops run all day Saturday and there is a grand parade each day of the show. The Crack Up Sisters are coming back to the show performing on both days as well as the ElJay Freestyle Motorcycle stunt show. 115th BOONAH SHOW "Remembering the Anzacs" is the theme for the 2015 Boonah Show which will be held on Friday 15th & Saturday 16th May. This is a wonderful opportunity to come along and see all the fantastic exhibits of cattle, horses, birds & poultry, dairy & miniature goats, fruit & vegetables, hay & pumpkins, the lovely flowers, delicious cakes and all the wonderful pavilion displays. See the working display of vintage machinery, and watch the Grand Parade of all the prize winning animals followed by a Cavalcade of Transport. Visitors can see all the great traditional features of a good old fashioned country show plus loads of free entertainment. Special features to look out for at the Boonah Show is the Chain Saw Races, and the special Swagman Trail. As well as this there is the Animal Nursery with all the favourite baby farm animals to pet, plus a chance to meet up close and personal with some native Australian Animals. . Two new acts will be making their debut at Boonah, being the Roving Grannies & Noah's Farm Pig Races. Local bands will be performing throughout the day and there are lots of great food stalls. You can also meet your friends and enjoy great home cooked morning or afternoon teas or lunch in the comfortable atmosphere of the Dining Hall. Enjoy all the great Show Rides, visit the wide range of Trade displays and market stalls, as well as enjoy all the tastings in the Fine Food & Wine Display. Friday is mainly a Judging day, but Saturday show goers can enjoy all these attractions, then stay on for a full fun filled night show program featuring a Young Farmers Challenge, Miniature Trotters, Ute Parade and Demolition Derby, as well as a tremendous Fireworks display. The main feature for Saturday night will be the Isizu D-Max Stunt Team. This is a program not to be missed. The show runs from 8.am to 4 p.m on Friday, with the Cattleman's Dinner and the Junior Show Young Farmers Challenge on Friday Night, and the Saturday show goes from 8a.m till 10 p.m.. What’s Happening MUDGEERABA SHOW 2015 Mudgeeraba Show lifts the bar on their June 2015 Ring Program Following a record attendance at the 2014 Show the Gold Coast Hinterland Mudgeeraba Show Society have extended this year’s Show to 3 days, with gates opening mid afternoon Friday 26 June and closing 6pm Sunday 28 June. The Ring events commence Saturday with an upgraded Program. It features a substantially increased number of Hack Classes and Breed Classes. This has received great support from a number of breed associations within the south east Queensland region including Australian Stock Horse Association, Qld Pinto Association and Australian Gypsy Cobs. The Program will again include a qualifying class for QLD ‘Off the Track Series’. Improved facilities at the grounds including a now finalised purpose built Ring Office, will provide safer access for competitors when nominating. This year will see a significant increase in the quality of judges with all now being EFA registered such as highly regarded Gail Iskra and Mieke Bigg. John Wilsher will be the Show Jump Course Builder this year, and well known locals, Jan & Geoff Morland will be Chief Stewards in the show jump ring. The Ring Event program will be complimented with a substantially improved night program featuring David Mancheon’s Roof Top Express. A first class arena spectacular program featuring world first stunts in a combination of horse, cattle and dogs performing a jaw dropping program for young and old that you’ll find hard believe. Miniatures horses – remarkably versatile By NICOLA FIELD Small in size, big in heart, miniature horses have a surprisingly impressive skill set. “But what do you do with them?” It’s a question miniature horse owners are inevitably asked at some stage and the response can be far more involved than many people anticipate. Miniature horses – like their larger counterparts – each have their own personality however they tend to share a few common characteristics including great intelligence and willingness to please. This makes the diminutive horses highly trainable and the growth of dedicated miniature horse shows as well as miniature horse classes has given the breed greater opportunities to demonstrate their versatility. Along with traditional halter classes, many shows now provide what are broadly termed ‘performance’ classes. These incorporate lungeline events plus hunter (jumping) and trail classes that are based on Western models. A trail class for instance may see the horse and handler complete six to eight movements including backing, side passes, pivots, straddles as well as negotiating bridges, cones and gates. Unlike Western events, miniature performance classes are performed in-hand so rather than using traditional aids handler must provide verbal and physical cues. These cues can be quite unique to one horse/handler combination and this tends to see a strong rapport develop between miniatures and their handler. It is in the area of showjumping however that miniature horses often surprise even the most seasoned horse lover. Despite their small size, miniature horses can outperform their larger cousins on a horse:jump height ratio. As a guide, the recent 2015 National Show held by the Independent Miniature Horse Registry in Tamworth NSW, included a Guinness Book of Records bid for the highest jump achieved by a miniature horse. The eventual winner, and now world record holder - Castrawes Paleface Orion, is a 37.5 inch chestnut gelding. Paleface jumped a remarkable 42 inches on the day (though he has previously cleared heights of up to 48 inches). That’s the equivalent of a 16 Page 22

hand horse jumping almost two metres. Further highlighting the versatility of miniature horses, the same IMHR National Show featured a three day event comprised of the traditional elements of dressage (in-hand), cross country and showjumping. The event was judged by wellknown horseman - Kentuckybased Wayne Hipsley, who commended the ability of the 3DE to showcase the skills of both horse and handler. Along with performance, showjumping and halter classes, there is also burgeoning interest in miniature horses harness events. For many former big horse enthusiasts who no longer have the time or confidence to ride under saddle, miniature harness events provide a new avenue to enjoy showing horses competitively – or simply become part of a like-minded community of horse lovers. The Gladstone Miniature Horse and Pony Extravaganza will take place on May 16 and 17 at the Gladstone Showgrounds. This will be held over two days with halter classes commencing on the Saturday at 11.30am, followed by the harness and long reining and conclude with the costume classes. The Sunday morning’s program will commence at 8am with the youth performance followed by adult performance and jumping. The judge for the two days will be Ms Vicki Klein from the A.C.T. Ms Klein is an accredited International and National Miniature Horse Show judge. The Gladstone Showgrounds provide covered stables, wash bays, camping and facilities with horse feed and bedding available. There will be catering on the grounds and the showgrounds are located a short distance from the town central.

Gallipoli anniversary revives spirit of Anzacs With the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 attention will be paid to all those who served and gave their life for their country. Among those who fought in Gallipoli were members of the Australian Light Horse. At the start of World War I, Australia committed to provide an all volunteer expeditionary force of 20,000 personnel known as the Australian Imperial Force, which would consist of an infantry division and a light horse brigade. As Australia's commitment to the war increased, the size of the light horse contingent was expanded, with a second and third light horse brigade being raised in late 1914 and early 1915. Eventually, the Australian Light Horse regiments were organised into five brigades: 1st Light Horse Brigade consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Light Horse Regiments. 2nd Light Horse Brigade consisted of the 5th, 6th, 7th Light Horse Regiments. 3rd Light Horse Brigade consisted of the 8th, 9th, 10th Light Horse Regiments. 4th Light Horse Brigade consisted of the 4th, 11th, 12th Light Horse Regiments. 5th Light Horse Brigade consisted of the 14th and 15th Light Horse Regiments, in combination with the French 1er Regiment Mixte de Cavalerie du Levant and the New Zealand 2nd Machine Gun Squadron. From Gallipoli to the Western Front, the men of the Light Horse forged a special place in Australia’s military history. the war came during the Gallipoli Campaign, where the troops of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Light Horse Brigades were sent to Gallipoli without their horses to provide reinforcements for the infantry. During the campaign they were used mainly in a defensive role, although the light horsemen did participate in several costly battles, such as the Battle of the Nek. After the evacuation of the Gallipoli peninsula in December 1915, the light horse regiments that had been deployed were re-constituted in Egypt and in March 1916, the Australian mounted troops of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Light Horse Brigades and the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade were placed together in the Anzac
Mounted Division. The Australian Waler horse was the common mount for the light horsemen, as it was strong and hardy, which was needed in the harsh desert climate. This was facilitated by the horses being left behind in Egypt while the light horsemen went to Gallipoli, allowing them to gradually acclimatise. The units were like mounted infantry and usually fought dismounted, using their horses as transport to the battlefield and as a means of swift disengagement when retreating or retiring. A famous exception to this rule though was the charge of the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments at Beersheba on October 31, 1917. Troopers of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheeba, 1917 The light horse were organised along cavalry rather than infantry lines. A light horse regiment, although technically equivalent to an infantry battalion in terms of command level, contained only 25 officers and 400 men as opposed to an infantry battalion that consisted of around 1,000 men. Around a quarter of this nominal strength (or one man in each section of 4) could be allotted to horse-holding duties when the regiment entered combat. A regiment was divided into three squadrons, designated "A", "B" and "C" (equivalent to a company), and a squadron divided into four troops (equivalent to but smaller than a platoon). Each troop was divided into about
10 four-man sections. When dismounting for combat, one man from each section would take the reins of the other three men's horses and lead them out of the firing line where he would remain until called upon. In 1916, the average loss of sick horses and mules from the Sinai front was approximately 640 per week. They were transported in train loads of 30 trucks, each holding eight horses. Animals which died or were destroyed while on active service were buried 2 miles (3.2 km) from the nearest camp unless this was not practicable. In this case the carcasses were transported to a suitable site away from troops, where they were disemboweled and left to disintegrate in the dry desert air and high temperatures. Animals which died or were destroyed in veterinary units at Kantara, Ismalia, Bilbeis, and Quesna were dealt with in this way and after four days’ drying in the sun, the carcases were stuffed with straw and burnt, after the skins were salved. These were sold to local contractors. The 13th Light Horse Regiment and one squadron of the 4th Light Horse Regiment served on the Western Front, first as divisional cavalry squadrons for the 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions, and then as the I ANZAC Corps Mounted Regiment. * Information sourced from Australian Light Horse Studies Centre and the Australian War Memorial.

put front feet on tailgate, stop, stretch into trailer to retrieve carrot, back off tailgate, get pulled up to trailer, wait for owner to pick up front feet and put on trailer, stretch for carrot, allow owner to pick up one back foot and put on tailgate, back off tailgate, watch owner burst into tears and listen to her explain something for a couple of minutes, get lead into float but leave one foot out on tailgate, allow owner to pick up last foot and put in trailer, bum bar closes, eat all the carrots, tailgate closes and we are off. Have you taught your horse to follow direction into any area ? Or have you taught him to load following a specific set of cues. The difference between a trained
horse, and a horse following a habit, is adjustability. Take the float for example - I can load Cooper into a straight load, an angle load, doesn't matter because he is trained to follow my cue - not to recognize his own trailer and only get in it. Ever wonder why your horse knows when you are feeding, riding or if its a vet appointment ? He knows because he reads your body language, which is different for all of these things. When we think about cues when it comes to our horse training, we think about the cues that we are intentionally training into our horses. For example, when I am going to send my horse out on the circle, I step out in the direction of the circle, take up feel in the lead rope, lift up my energy and look in the direction of the circle and lead my horse out, click, and then if he still hasn't left, raise my whip, then swing it and finally tap him with it. All of these cues are the ones that I know about. The ones that I have intentionally done to cue the horse to leave but what about the ones that I do that I don't know about ? I have a client, that whenever she is going to mount her horse, using the mounting block, taps the sand off her boot as she climbs the steps, so before she is even standing on the mounting block, the horse knows what is going to happen - there is a sound that happens each time she is about to be ridden. I have a husband and wife team that regularly attend my clinics. They have no trouble loading their horses on the float and they travel often to clinics and events. One weekend the wife was away, and so the husband was going to come along to my clinic - and couldn't load the horse. The first thought is of course that he wouldn't load as his mate wasn't on the float, but once we looked into it further, we realized that the routine of loading was, one horse gets put on, wife ties her up, then as her husband loads his horse, she walks around behind the horse, to prepare to put the bum bar across - being safety
conscious, she puts her hand on the horse’s bum as she walks by, so he knows she is there - this is the cue! All that horse was waiting for was that hand on the bum that happens every time he gets on the float. The hand has no pressure, it’s not actually asking him to get on but to the horse, because it happens each time, considers it as part of the loading cues. Easy to fix, but one of those habits that we humans don't even know we are doing - but it means something to the horse. And what it meant until it was fixed that the horse was a two person loader. Some of our cues probably don't matter - like the sound of the feeds being made up. But what about the ones that do matter? Like the horse that two people to load because we that’s how we always do it. Or needing someone to stand in front so he doesn't walk off when being mounted ? My own horse, during demos anticipates the circles before I am even ready to send him - I know that I do the same thing as I prepare to demonstrate circles at a clinic - and Cooper has picked up on it. I think it is when I shorten his lead, combined with looking down at the ground and talking. As soon as I do this, Cooper starts to head off in a circle, because I have done the same 'lead up' to circles at each clinic. What about the horse that takes exactly 20 mins to get on the float? Is he being difficult or is he following a routine ? Does he think the loading process is - get lead up to the float, stop, get circled back around to straighten up, stop, get circled the other way to straighten up, stop,

Monitoring health by digital pulses The digital pulse provides key information with regards to the health of a horse’s hooves. When taking pulses, you are feeling the blood flowing through the artery into the hooves. In a healthy horse, the digital pulse is quite hard to find because the normal flow of blood is unrestricted. However, when there is inflammation in the hoof, the blood flow is restricted and as a result backs up in the artery, making the pulse feel much stronger. The artery pushes the blood into the hoof. When there is inflammation, there is no longer enough 'room' within the hoof capsule. Essentially, the hoof pushes the blood back into the artery. This is what causes the bounding or bounce of the pulse. The more inflammation there is in the hoof, the stronger the bounce. Faint digital pulses are normal and usually indicate there are no major issues in the hoof. There is some natural variation in pulse strength. All horses are different, so checking pulses frequently will help you learn to define when your horse is `normal’. An easily felt equine digital pulse is commonly called a bounding digital pulse. The sensation is like a throbbing headache or an injured finger. It is not an increase in speed, but instead an increase in strength. A bounding equine digital pulse is a red flag. It is telling you that your horse may have a health issue. Slightly stronger is not as alarming as very strong. If the pulse seems stronger than normal, make sure to check a few times before assuming something is wrong. Stronger pulses indicate inflammation and/or pain. Compare pulses in all four feet. This way, abnormalities in one hoof will be more apparent. If there is a bounding pulse in only one hoof, then suspect a localized issue, possibly an abscess or maybe a bruise.

More than likely this is a pain response to an injury. Stronger pulses in two or four feet indicate possibly a bigger problem. Your horse may have laminitis. Before you panic, look at your horse carefully. If he appears normal, happy and comfortable, then it may be a common variation in his pulses. If, on the other hand, you are noticing foot discomfort, personality changes or anything that leads you to believe he is not doing well, then suspect laminitis. The strength of the pulse and your horse’s behavior will help you determine what you should do. Strong bounding digital pulses and hoof sensitivity are often the first signs of laminitis. If the conditions causing inflammation are addressed quickly, the horse should improve rapidly with very few complications. This is why taking pulses is such a useful management tool. Trust yourself and your horse. If the horse looks miserable or you are overly alarmed, call your veterinarian. Use common sense. Learning to take digital pulse Normal equine digital pulses can be very hard to detect. If you know the anatomy of the lower leg, it will help immensely. If you are touching the correct area of the leg and having a hard time finding the pulse, then more than likely, the pulse is normal. There are two noticeable grooves in the lower leg.
1.) Between the flexor tendons and suspensory ligament. 2.) Between the cannon bone and suspensory ligament. The vein/artery/nerve run in the groove formed between the flexor tendons and the suspensory. The veins, Arteries and Nerves (VAN) are bundled together. When you take the digital pulse, it is blood flowing through the artery that you feel. If you are comfortable with finding pulses, then using your fingertips is the most sensitive way to check pulses. When checking whether the pulses are strong and bounding, lay your fingers over the whole area. There are four locations that you can find the digital pulse, the easiest one is between the coronary band and the fetlock. The other locations are around and above the fetlock, and are harder to find if there is leg inflammation or windpuffs. The digital pulse can be found in this manner: -Using your pointer and middle finger, start at the front of the pastern half way between the fetlock and the coronary band. -Move your fingers towards the back of the pastern applying some pressure until you find a little groove. The groove will be roughly over the outer edge of the heel bulbs. You can roll your fingers over this area until you feel a slight pulse. If you press too hard, you will pinch it off, and not hard enough and you won’t find it. -Each leg will have two little groovy areas to find a pulse. Be sure to check both sides on each hoof.

Equestrian Australia (NSW) Awards Horse Driving Trials in Australia are a relatively unknown sport, even though Australian Boyd Exell is six times world indoor champion and Australia’s only gold medallist at the World Equestrian Games. Horse Driving Trials Club members have worked with huge effort to erect FEI standard obstacles at the Tamworth venue, the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre which was praised by visiting FEI official Dr Assendorf as an incredible place and Australia should be very grateful to have it. The country’s equestrian lovers can look forward to the next two FEI events to be held there along with the exciting skills of Boyd Exell who will be at both events. On March 11, harness club members Judy Meredith and her daughters, Jessica and Anna came from Armidale to join Bill and Patsy Wicks from Broadwater along with Helen Butcher from Tabulum in representing the Tablelands and Northern Rivers section in Sydney for the Equestrian Australia NSW awards held at Rosehill. These awards are given to all phases of NSW equestrian sports and all were represented on the night. There were many well-known competitors as well as Australia’s Olympic representatives in attendance. Clubs have worked very hard over the last 12 months to run events promoting carriage driving and the skills of driving including open days, come and try days, carriage driving, competitions and have been recognized by the NSW body for services to carriage driving.
