Over Thanksgiving break, 11 year old Jacek Jureczki took his first black buck in Bandera, Texas on his greatgrandfather's land. Jacek dropped his buck with one shot from 328 yards away!

Jacek is the son of Mandy Mahon of Hamshire.

Proud grandparents are Pete and Debbie Mahon of Hamshire, and Phillip and Carolyn Jureczki of Mont Belvieu.

By Wade Thibodeaux The rough stock events of the Junior World Finals rodeo was held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday, December 2, 2021 through Monday, December 6, 2021. The event was held in the Las Vegas Convention Center with bull riding, bareback, and saddle bronc categories. The youngsters were divided into four different groups by age with Rookie being the youngest,

followed by Junior, Senior, and Novice. Winnie had a few representatives in the three events, but 11 year old Tucker Cart who had previously won the all around title at the event was the only one who received an award. Tucker was the Reserve World Champion in the Rookie Division of the Saddle Bronc while older brother Ethan Cart was bucked off of both of his horses.

and placement in the funeral home until his final internment on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2021 in Fairview Cemetery.

The plane arrived at Bush Intercontinental Airport

and a Navy Honor Guard received the casket and placed it into the hearse where an entourage led by Chambers County Sheriff's Office escorted Seaman Saunders to Winnie.

Once in Winnie, Seaman Saunders was driven through a large group of citizens who lined the highway to pay respect to the fallen seaman. The crowd was waving flags as the hearse passed on it's way to the funeral home.

Once in Winnie, Seaman Saunders was placed in the chapel at Broussard's where he awaited final internment at Fairview Cemetery some eighty years after he lost his life in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

by Wade Thibodeaux Coming to you from Vegas this week and I have learned several things since I have been here. The very first lesson that I learned was that everything in Vegas is big......except for the Las Vegas Convention Center........it's HUGE. I had a late flight last Wednesday and I arrived in Vegas about 11:30pm., which was really 1:30 am.

Texas time. By the time I made it through the airport and got to the hotel it was about 12:45am. I checked into the hotel and the desk clerk told me that my room was by the elevator on the eight floor. I gathered up my luggage and headed upstairs. This hotel is built in a T shape and I was on the top part of the T. I started down the hallway, looking at room numbers and kept walking until I was at the room next to the end of the hall. So much for being close to the elevator.

Okay, I'll make that walk

15 times a day.....I need the exercise and somebody has to be in that room, so it may as well be me. I went to the window and opened the curtain and was looking at a concrete wall that was part of another adjacent building. Oh no, I'm not spending two weeks in Vegas looking at a concrete wall. I called the front desk, politely explained my situation and within minutes was in a room on the sixteenth floor that was two rooms down from the elevator on the leg of the T with a beautiful view of the Las Vegas Strip. Much better and I was able to get to bed a little after 1:00 am. or 3:00 am. Texas time.

The next morning I had to be at the Las Vegas Convention Center and I was up and ready to go at 8:30 am. My Uber picked me up and she dropped me off at the North Hall of the Convention Center. Only after a 30 minute

brisk walk was I informed that the activities were located in the South Hall of the Convention Center.

Okay, lesson learned and next time we will put better instructions into the Uber app. After walking around for another 30 minutes or so, I found the place I was looking for and proceeded to meet up with my contact person to retrieve my press credentials for that particular event. The event that I needed pictures from was supposed to begin at 11:00am., but they were running late and didn't start until after Noon. The contestant I was waiting for ended up being the last rider of the last of four divisions and by now we are pushing 2:30 pm. I have to be back at the hotel and change clothes and catch a 4:00 pm.. bus to go to the Thomas and Mack Center to get my NFR credentials and catch the first performance of the rodeo. I finally figure out where the Uber pickup area is located and of course it's on the complete other end of the South Hall and so another 20 minute walk to catch a ride.

I make it back to the hotel, change clothes, catch the bus, get my credentials,

watch the rodeo, and make it back to the hotel by 9:15 pm. At this point in the game, I'm tired of walking and so the best thing to do is go sit at a poker table for a few minutes before I go to bed. At 1:30 am. the next morning, I stumble up to the room and pass out before getting up a little later the next morning and head back to the Convention Center to catch the other Junior World Finals rider that I need a picture of. Friday is a little better because at this point I have kinda figured out the program and I can at least get the right location for Uber which saves several hundred steps. By Satur-

day, I'm in a groove and my poor aching muscles are starting to get over the soreness created from the first two days and Sunday I attended the fourth performance of the rodeo and I am looking forward to the next six days.

The second thing that I learned was that I should have worn my black cowboy hat. Many years ago, when I was in the livestock publication business, a very respected rancher told me that cowboys wear black hats and cattlemen wear silver belly colored hats. So, consequently, I have traditionally worn a silver belly cowboy hat. I have a black hat that I had

to purchase for one event that I worked at because we had to wear a black cowboy tux and black hats and since then I have not worn that black hat in 30 years. I should have worn my black hat at the rodeo. Hardly anybody is wearing silver belly colored hats and most are wearing black hats with an occasional light brown thrown in the mix. Oh well, I'm easy to find in a crowd.

Next week we'll talk about a couple of other things that I have been educated on this week, so keep things together in Texas while I'm gone and I'll see you in about 10 days. Till next time, I'm....Wade in the Shade.

HOWARD PAYNE’S WINNING DEBATERS

Speech and debate are big deals at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. ”We’re one of the few colleges or universities in Texas or other states that guarantees scholarships for our competitors,“ says Dr. Julie Welker, who heads up the university’s Department of Communication.

“Our students must go through an audition process to be on our debate team.”

Julie coaches the speech and debate teams and last year was recognized as the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association Educator Of The Year. She is a HPU grad and has taught there 22 years. She has been coaching the speech students since 2005.

Her teams have been competing all over the nation and yearly in Oxford, England. She recruits just like coaches of athletic teams. As a result, her students have won outstanding awards.

“Last year was an interesting year because of Covid. All our tournaments were online, which changed the atmosphere of each tournament. Instead of being in a room and having that face-to-face interaction they were all virtual. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the

interaction occurred between the students and judges, too.

However the situation with the pandemic allowed us to compete at different schools in different parts of the United States, which made us a lot stronger because each region has its own style of debate. We got some really great practice tournaments in and last fall we won the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association’s debate sweepstakes and overall sweepstakes, which was something that had never even done at Howard Payne. This past spring we won debate sweepstakes overall and have done tremendously well on the national scale as well.”

The debate students have to be well versed in a variety of subjects.

“In the team debate the topic is announced and the participants are given just 15 minutes to prepare. Teams are assigned either affirmative or negative.”

Her students are involved in at least half a dozen tournaments every school year.

“For the past 11 years prior to Covid we have been going to Oxford and competing. We hope to be able to go back soon depending on whether England is open to foreign travelers.

Those events are not just open to undergraduates. They are open to schools all over the world and some students have 8 years of eligibility. We are competing against students who are in PhD programs, law programs from Yale, Cambridge, Oxford, you know the biggest universities in the world. So for our students to be able to compete in that arena, it’s a great experience. After the debate competition we go to parliament and watch debates between the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

That’s where the style of debate we use originated. It’s just fun to watch and sometimes there are famous people there and that’s even more exciting. We do some sight seeing, too. It’s just a great cultural experience for the students. They’re gregarious and meet people well. They are good ambassadors.”

Fifty-One individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, November 28 and Saturday, December 4.

Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

When we got home I posted of this positive interaction on a local restaurant review page. Simple enough. Just to thank her and let people know there are still compassionate people out there.

Fast forward….. that little post has been liked and shared and commented on over 1000 times. Not sure what it takes to say something went viral, but that little feel good post….. well it touched people.

Maybe it’s that others can relate to navigating restaurants with the elderly. Maybe it’s that the world is just tired. Maybe it’s the

holiday spirit. We have certainly been surprised at how many people reacted.

I think it speaks loudly for how exhausted society is with non stop complaining.

I get it, I have bad days, tiring days, and I encounter people that irritate me. I no doubt irritate others as well. The world is not roses and butterflies daily.

But as Mom and I have discussed, imagine what positive you could do if you opted to point out the good one time daily.

To thank a hostess, to open a door, to stand with someone’s elderly parent while they got the car. To ensure safety.

As life rolls, different things hit personally for each of us. In your twenties, you find that the person that holds a door open as

you struggle to push a stroller through, has just made your day.

Get a little older, and it’s the coworker who listens as you bemoan your teenager, who is driving you mad.

Then you become the person with the elderly parents, and that little extra effort makes your weekend.

Happy Sunday peeps.

I hope as your week rolls along, getting closer to Christmas and more insanity, that you find time to lift the load just a little bit for a stranger.

If you can’t be the load lifter, be the thankful for the effort given on your behalf.

Compliment more, complain less. The world has enough negativity, no need to add to it. And you just never know when a little positive post, may lift the heart of others.

Racca and his wife, Amy, and Amos Racca and his wife, Sherry, both of Winnie; grandchildren, Chloe Lewis and her husband, Shawn, of Winnie; Kylor Wilber and his wife, Shelbie, of Lumberton; Daniel, Gabby, Lilly, Jayda, Jude, and Matthew; great grandchildren, Tinley and Laelyn Wilber; mother, Nola Manuel of Lake Charles, LA; brother, Lynn Manuel of Lake Charles, LA; sisters, Elaine LaVergne and her husband, Mike,

of Lake Charles, LA; Renee Moore and her husband, Richard, of Choupique, LA; Lori Lowe and her husband, John, of Winnie; Doris Mudd of Holmwood, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Billy is preceded in death by his father, Mack Joseph Manuel and brother-in-law, Greg Mudd.

Mr. Manuel’s cremation arrangements will be handled

through Broussard’s Crematorium, 51050 Stivers Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie.

Billy worked pipeline construction for Winnie Welding Works for over 30 years. He loved cooking and will be remembered for his Cajun fried turkeys and gumbo. He never met a stranger. He spent countless hours in his outdoor kitchen and if you knew Billy, you knew that’s where you could find him. Billy enjoyed Cajun music, Braves baseball, and yardwork. Windstream participates in a government benefit program called Lifeline to make residential telephone or broadband service more affordable to eligible low-income individuals and families.

Eligible customers are those that meet eligibility standards as defined by the FCC and state commission. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may also qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain federal eligibility programs. The program offers a monthly discount limited to one discount per household and can either be applied to wireline or wireless. HATS OFF TO READERS

It’s really appreciated when someone lets me know he enjoyed something I’ve written.

Even the three messages that pointed out mistakes I’ve made received during 223 published columns prior to this one, were appreciated. Sure, they stung a little since I prudently proof-read every column several times looking for mistakes or inappropriate phrasing and also enlist a second pair of eyes to look for things I’ve missed. But I at least know they had read my scribblings.

Welcome Neighborhood Net Readers!

It’s a boost when a reader writes or calls and says nice things or shares his experience concerning whatever subject I had covered. Many of these calls came in when I was in the brush or in my truck, so I don’t have records of all of them.

I’m amused when other writers have built columns around readers’ comments. One called his “We Get Letters”; another “From the Mailbag.” It sounded to me like they had run out of subject ideas.

To avoid that indictment, I’ll start by telling about a phone call substantiating last week’s weird column about my having seen the Northern Lights from a seldom-travelled roadway in South Texas. A Victoria Advocate reader named Danny called. The Advocate carries my column. He started the conversation by saying he also had seen the “Lights” that night in 1969. I hoped I would smoke out another viewer from that sighting.

It seems Danny and his girlfriend were at a park in Kingsville that evening listening to Radio Station KTSA broadcasting from San Antonio.

They saw strange lights there for several minutes.

According to Danny, the disc jockey broke in and said the station had received multiple calls about some strange light

show in the northern sky.

He promised to look into it and report back. And he did.

Danny said the DJ returned a little later and said it was caused by a “solar flare”. When particles from the Sun enter Earth’s atmosphere, they create the Aurora Borealis – or “Northern Lights”.

See, I didn’t just make that up!

The very first reader’s comment about the Woods. Waters, and Wildlife column came from a reader named Bob whose wife takes the Hometown Press -- the Winnie, Texas newspaper. He wrote, “I neither hunt nor fish but read every column by John Jefferson for the interesting information about wildlife. His columns have given me a new appreciation for the outdoors.”

Another called to share his squirrel hunting experiences. As we visited, we realized close mutual connections with friends and relatives. Another called from Area 361 about my article on mountain lions. He had seen one along the King Ranch shoreline.

One hunter wrote me about field-dressing a hog barehanded. A cut on his hand led to a serious infection. That inspired another column on wearing latex gloves. Several snake calls also provided chilling accounts.

NFR Off to a Great Start

Shane Hanchey had an emotional round 1 win during the NFR in Las Vegas last Thursday, December 2, 2021.

The annual event known as the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada is off to a great start as cowboys and cowgirls have invaded the City of Las Vegas. The first night delivered an emotional victory for Sulphur, La cowboy Shane Hanchey in the calf roping as his number one horse TJ passed away just a few days before the Finals, however he stepped aboard Peso and delivered a 7.4 second round victory.

The after the round interview was an emotional one for Hanchey as he commented “That run was so

much more than a round win, with me losing TJ, 10 days ago and he was what I was planning on riding at the Finals, so I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Hanchey said.

Things continued with the bull riding as J.B.Mauney and Ky Hamilton split the round. Veteran star bull rider J.B. Mauney made his first ride at the Wrangler NFR one to remember.

The Texas cowboy had an 87.5-point ride on Painted Pony Championship Rodeo’s Cocktail Diarrhea to share the title with Ky Hamilton. Hamilton, a na-

tive of Mackay, Australia, had an 87.5-point ride on Hurst & TNT Pro Rodeo’s Rip. Jess Pope continued his winning ways from last year's NFR as he won round 1 with a 90.5 ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo's Night Crawler after winning the average at last year's NFR bareback competition.

Team ropers Tyler Wade and Trey Yates had a great opportunity to go fast in Round 1 and that’s exactly what they did. Wade/ Yates stopped the clock in 4.0 seconds to claim the victory. The steer wrestling Round 1 victory by cowboys Dirk Tavenner and Riley Duvall was exciting as each clocked 3.7 runs to split the round and both claim the top spot.

Two-time saddle bronc riding world champion Zeke Thurston and Chase Brooks were ready to go in Round 1 at the Wrangler NFR – and it showed.

Thurston had an 88.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Wyatt Earp and Brooks came through with an 88.5-point

Hello Chambers County, I am Rachal Hisler, and I am running for Chambers County Judge. Chambers County is growing rapidly, and we need Constitutional, Christian servant leaders who will honor

our traditional values and beliefs. I will use the power of the office of County Judge to protect our people from unconstitutional dictates from higher political offices as described in the duties of the County Judge.

We the people do not need bureaucrats telling us how to raise our families, making medical decisions for us, or interfering in every aspect of our businesses!

What we need is a longterm plan for drainage and infrastructure, and limits on the scope and size of county government. I am a wife, mother, and successful small business owner.

The Rigby, Idaho cowboy clocked a 3.4-second run to capture the victory. Bull rider Parker Breding was back on the rodeo's big stage for the first time since 2018 and he didn’t waste the opportunity to make an im-

pact. The Edgar, Montana cowboy had a 90-point trip on Outlawbuckers Rodeo’s Lose Your Bones to take the Round 2 win.

When their regular partners didn’t qualify for the 2021 Wrangler NFR, Derrick Begay and Brady Minor teamed up. It didn’t take long for the veteran ropers to find their rhythm together.

Begay/Minor stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds to win Round 2.

The Clovis, New Mexico cowboy stopped the clock in 7.2 seconds to take the Round 2 title. Dona Kay Rule is a veteran of the NFR, and she had her talent on full display Friday night. The Minco, Oklahoma cowgirl made a 13.56-second run to claim the Round 2 victory a night after she hit two barrels.

Round 3 and 4 had more highlights as Saddle bronc rider Tegan Smith won his first career round in record-breaking fashion.

The Iowa cowboy had a 91-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Yesterday’s Delivery to claim the Round 3 victory at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge before 17,153 spectators at the Thomas & Mack Center. Smith broke the Round 3 record, which was established by Allen Boore with his 90.5-point ride on the same horse – Yesterday’s Delivery. Caleb Smidt has proven he’s one of the best tie-down ropers in the PRCA as evident by his two world championships in 2015 and 2018. The Bellville, Texas cowboy delivered again with a 7.1-second run to win Round 3. Making his first appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge since 2018, Wade Sundell showed he’s still an elite saddle bronc rider Sunday. Sundell, the 2018 world champion, won Round 4 with an 89.5-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Bet the Ranch before 16,851 fans at the Thomas & Mack Center. This was

his first NFR round win since Round 5 in 2018. After getting his first career Wrangler NFR round win with a Round 2 win Dec. 3, tie-down roper Shad Mayfield was making another victory lap Sunday after Round 4. The reigning world champion stopped the clock in 7.6 seconds to claim the Round 4 title.

Kaycee Feild is now tied atop PRCA’s all-time list for bareback riding NFR round wins with Bobby Mote with 25. R.C. Landingham snared his third career NFR round win and first since 2016. The duo split the Round 4 win.

Feild had an 87.5-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Outlaw and Landingham matched that score aboard Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix William Wallace. Barrel racer Wenda Johnson took the spotlight with a 13.46-second run to win Round 4 on Sunday night. There's six more nights of action in the 2021 version of the NFR and we will have more results in next week's paper.

Cheyenne Wimberley and Amanda Welsh got off on the right foot at the Wrangler NFR as they split the Round 1 win in the barrel racing. Each had 13.77 second runs.
