sample pockets that are individually numbered to correspond to the sample number of the test tube. At the bottom of each "well" is another reagent that enables the analyzer to determine if the specific sample in each well is negative or positive for the Covid-19 virus. The analyzer takes about two hours to complete it's process and then spits out a report detailing the results of each individual sample in each well. Riceland Medical Center has a procedure in place that the technician follows each morning as they begin their day that pulls all of the previous days samples out of the freezer and loads the plate with the individual specimens. This provides economies of scale as they are able to do 95 samples at the same time. The other well in the 96 well plate is for a control sample which
is used to help calibrate the machine each time a plate is run in the analyzer. Theoretically, if enough samples were taken on a busy day, the analyzer could produce results every two hours for 95 samples or about 1140 results in a 24 hour period. The sinus swap does not have to be placed in the freezer to be placed into the plate and then placed into the analyzer, that is just done to preserve the sample to be grouped with other samples to be run at the same time. Riceland Medical Center hopes that the Covid-19 pandemic will subside and that no more than one plate per day is needed, but they are prepared for the possibility that multiple runs could be performed if needed in the future.
