fateful day of December 7, 1941, a Texas hero will

be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Winnie at 10:30 am. on December 7, 2021. Charles Louis Saunders was aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma when it was among the first vessels to be struck by Japanese aerial torpedoes at 7:55 am. in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In total, 429 U.S.S. Oklahoma sailors lost their lives that day. When the ship was "righted" after capsizing, the 429 bodies were recovered and only 35 were able to be identified. The remaining 388 were buried in "unknown" graves and were disinterred in 1947 and 1950 with unsuccessful attempts for identification. By 2015, DNA analysis had progressed to the point that positive identifications could begin to be made and by December of 2017, 100 Sailors had been identified. February 26, 2019 was the day that the 200th Sailor was identified and on January 28, 2021 the 300th

Sailor was identified. Charles Louis Saunders was born October 16, 1923 in Port Neches, Texas and claimed Winnie as his hometown. He perished December 7, 1941 aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma after being trapped below deck when the vessel was struck by enemy fire and capsized. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal(with Fleet Clasp), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal(with Bronze Star), World War II Victory Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 10:30 am. at a graveside service in Fairview Cemetery.
