Chambers County Emergency Services District No1 and Winnie Stowell VFD crews responded to a large grass fire in the 1500 block of Fm 1406 North on Monday afternoon. The fire was a controlled burn that got out of control when the wind kicked up to 10 miles per hour from the

Crews from Oak Island/Double Bayou, Wallisville, and Hankamer responded to assist with the blaze. No injuries and no property damage was reported from the blaze.

By Wade Thibodeaux The Board of Commissioners of the Chambers County Emergency Services District No. 1 met in regular session on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 6:00 pm. in the Firestation located at 825 State Highway 124 in Winnie, Texas and they received information that the finance note on Engine 21 had been paid in full, the check cashed for the final payment, and the title was now in their possession. That leaves the District with only one remaining note which is on the newest Fire Truck, the super pumper Engine 22.

In other action, the board approved the financial report which showed $1,206,109.45 in total

The East Chambers Buccaneers cruised to a 59-14 victory over the Huntington Red Devils in the first round of the 3A-Division 1 football playoffs and will next meet Little River Academy this Thursday, November 18, 2021 in Tomball at 7:30 pm. The Bucs scored early and often as they led 21-0 after the first quarter and 42-7 at the halftime break.

East Chambers sort of took their foot off the gas in

the third frame, but added a field goal to lead 45-14 going into the final frame.

Some of the underclassmen got in on the action in the final period and their talent and enthusiasm added another 14 points to the final tally of 59-14. East Chambers had 469 yards of total offense and crossed the goal line 7 times with the offense and the defense even got in on the scoring as a pick six resulted in another score. Even when things went wrong, they

turned out alright as a bad snap on an extra point attempt turned into a 2 point conversion.

Some of the individual stats include Hadyn Reeves(#6) with 192 yards on 20 carries and 4 touchdowns and Jacoby Perrault(#10) with 4 carries for 58 yards and a score as well as 4 completions on 4 attempts in the passing department for 59 yards and another touchdown.

KK Morris(#5) carried the ball 7 times for 63

yards rushing and caught 2 passes for 35 yards and a trip across the goal line.

Jaden Thibodeaux(#32) came in late in the game with fresh legs and carried the ball 5 times for 44 yards and a score while Joshua Carter(#7) can be credited with the pick six.

The defense did their part as 18 players combined for 54 tackles including 7 tackles for a loss and 4 interceptions.

East Chambers 4th Grade Presents Veterans Day Program

by Wade Thibodeaux I’m a pretty simple minded, yet complicated individual. For instance, I don’t really like change in my life.

I like to be on a routine, to do the same things repeatedly, on a schedule. Yet, I very seldom keep a calendar, and when I do keep a schedule of events, I don’t always follow it because things are always changing in my day to day activities. And, I guess I’m okay with that because after fifty something years, I haven’t done anything to change my life to make it more rigid.

Maybe, I’m just a confused individual because I say I don’t like change, but then I live a lifestyle that changes at the drop of a hat or the sound of a scanner. I just returned from a little week long trip to Vegas and the only thing that was set in stone was the time of the flights. Everything else was let’s just see what time we wake up, how much time we spent at the card table, or do we have time for this show or a trip to a museum. I did have to be at T Mobile Stadium at a set time

every night to actually work and if you missed the guided tour through the chutes to the moat where the photographers were stationed on the dirt, you just didn’t make it there that night because they weren’t going to stop the rodeo for you to walk through the arena. I have climbed a fence when a mad bull was coming at me and I have taken pictures of some angry bovines, but I don’t think that I have ever climbed a fence with cameras around my neck while a bull was charging at me. At my age, I don’t think that’s a practice that I would like to try and the folks in charge of the bull riding were all worried about liability and people getting hurt so they wouldn’t let you go to the dirt if you missed the selected time.

Anyway, I did have a lot of fun in Vegas and I think that I would like to go back.

Actually, I’ve already got my flight booked and my room reserved for two weeks at the National Finals Rodeo. I used to travel all of the time

Opinion & Entertainment and then I took about a 20 year break from travelling and it’s taken me a couple of times through security to kinda get back in the habit of flying. Almost all of my serious travelling was before 911 and while security was tight, it was nothing like it is now. In the old days, I would be wearing starched jeans and a starched shirt with cowboy boots and a big belt buckle. This trip, I wore old jeans, a polo, slip on shoes, and no belt. I was wearing a sports coat because I didn’t have room in my luggage for another coat and all of these airlines charge for extra luggage, so I was not going to bring another suitcase just for a coat. I felt somewhat silly wearing a sports coat over an old polo, but hey, it worked and saved about $50. On top of all of that, everything had to come out of your pockets, and I mean everything. I had to be scanned with a wand after I went through the x-ray machine because I had accidently left a penny in my pocket. I had to take my tablet out of my carry-on bag and place it in a separate tray for scanning, and of course my cell phone had to be in a tray along with my camera equipment, and my shoes and jacket were in another tray. While all of this was somewhat bothersome, I would just as soon be safe and take a little extra time

for the guys and gals to be very thorough and keep us all safe.

As I said before, I used to travel quite a bit, but I’m still amazed at air travel in general. It’s about a three day drive to go from Texas to Las Vegas, but we made the trip in about two and a half hours.

Well, not really, that was just air time. I arrived at the Las Vegas airport about 6:30 am. and made it through security with just a little time before my 8:20 flight took off. We arrived in Dallas about 1:00 pm. because of the two hour

time zone difference and then we were able to have a nice leisurely lunch before I drove the three hours to get to my house in Huntsville.

So, within about twelve hours, I was able to leave Vegas, get to Dallas, get lunch, and drive to Huntsville. And, I was able to do all of that for about $150. Not bad, if I say so myself. Now, we won’t talk about all of the Uber fees while I was in Vegas, or the time spent at the card table, or the money spent on a couple of shows and museums, but it was fun. And, the best

part of it all was that when I did return to Texas, both offices were still functional and we were able to get newspapers out the door while I was at 30,000 feet in the air. I just love technology. I know a bunch of you guys and gals are headed to Vegas for the rodeo in December, so while you are there just give me a shout on our Facebook pages and maybe we could enjoy dinner or an adult beverage together. A LEGEND CREATES A NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

The historic military fort in Fort Davis has a legend about an Indian woman who was left behind during an attack on the fort by Apache Indians.

She was sort of adopted by a military family and given the name Emily.

Over time she fell in love with a young officer. But the officer had his own girl friend and didn’t pay any attention to Emily.

Eventually she ended up going back with the Indians.

When the Apaches were planning another attack on the fort, so goes the legend, Emily went to the Fort to warn the young officer and the family that had cared for her. As she neared the fort, a guard saw this Indian girl, so goes the legend, and asked for the password. She didn’t know what it was so he shot her.

Larry Francell, historian and former county judge in Fort Davis, has spent years researching the legend and came up with some startling information about Indian Emily.

“Fort Davis was never directly attacked by Indians,” he says. “I think I have proved conclusively there was no Indian Emily.”

Larry says the legend began when Carl Raht mentioned it in his 1919 book ROMANCE OF THE DAVIS MUNTAINS AND BIG BEND COUNTRY. At one time there was a café in Fort Davis named Indian Emily. Years ago the fort had a historical marker on a grave where legend says Indian Emily was buried. It was quite a tourist attraction and visitors drove out to see it. In the sixties, some researchers did some digging only to reveal the gravesite was empty.

Larry has written a book titled HOW INDIAN EMILY SAVED FORT DAVIS. “What is interesting is how the fort became a National Historic Site.

Our representative at the time was JT Rutherford.

He was a friend to both Lyndon Johnson and John Kennedy.

Congressman Rutherford was head of the National Parks Committee in the House of Representatives. He was in Fort Davis for the fort’s centennial celebration since Fort Davis was part of his constituency. He believed in the legend of

Indian Emily and told about it on the floor of Congress.

“There is a file at Fort Davis that shows how John Kennedy, when he was President, wanted Cape Cod made a national seashore. The California delegation wanted Point Reyes to be a national seashore. So Rutherford, being in sort of the driver’s seat, brokered a deal where he got California to support the east coast and the east coast to support the west coast and made both of those entities national seashores.

In doing so he just kind of put little old Fort Davis underneath and made it a National Historic Site.”

Larry says the legend served its purpose.

Forty-Five individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, November 7 and Saturday, November 13. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

This weekend we began moving my mom in with me. This has been a planned out process, that honestly we have worked on for 6 months or so.

The merging of houses requires a lot of clean out, as we both have been doing so.

I had an empty bedroom, but the closet had stuff in it, and bottom line Mom had a two bedroom house filled with her 75 years of things. But doing it this way has allowed her to give things to those

who she wanted to have it. To ship stuff to family members. Or to help my kid outfit a new place of her own.

We also set about and have sold a large portion of things. Social media is great for selling and getting rid of things. But I wanted to warn those of you who may not sell much.

When you post things on FB Marketplace, be VERY CAREFUL of who you you correspond with. If someone sends you a message, prior to responding, look at their page. If nothing is there it’s a scam.

Here is what they do….

First you will get a message that says is this item still available. You say yes, 99.9999% of the time the next message is, send me your cell number and we will arrange pick up.

Do not….. I repeat DO NOT, give your cell

number. Once they have that they hack your fb account, change all info to theirs and you are locked out of your account. I know someone this happened to. Hackers wanted thousands of dollars to let her back in.

It didn’t work, but this is their scam. It took her a while but she eventually got back into her account with the help of fb.

The problem is people, self included, have pictures on their social media. It’s been around long enough now that some of those photos may be of lost loved ones.

Emotions come into play then, and emotions make us do things we normally wouldn’t.

So the lesson on all this is that if someone can correspond with you on fb, or thru messenger, they don’t need your cell number. Protect yourself, and be smart. Within 2 minutes of posting an

item, I had 6 scammers.

Fortunately I caught and reported all 6.

The good news is, the bulk of this move is done.

The hackers didn’t win.

And now the merging of two houses, primarily two kitchens, commences.

Fairly certain we have 30 cans of cream of something soup, and we may not need zip lock bags for 6 months.

The upside is we are laughing about it. Dish will come Monday to hook up moms tv, and the rest of the unpacking will commence. We have about 6 weeks to finish emptying and cleaning her old place and turn the keys over to her landlord.

So until then, anyone want a computer desk?

Dishes? Glasses? Just ask….. we probably have it in duplicate at this point….. onward and upward with memories to be made!

Cole Patterson Caps Record-Setting Season With First Career Gold Buckle Cole Patterson left no doubt who the best steer roper is in the PRCA in 2021.

Patterson, who came into the National Finals Steer Roping with a $39,415 lead in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, was never threatened as he cruised to his first career gold buckle at the Kansas Star Arena.

"The hardest one to get is the first gold buckle and to get it this early is big," said Patterson, 26.

"I have a ton of family here and I will be talking to them all night. This has been a long time coming.

A lot of work has gone

into this. I want to try and reflect on everything. To think just four years ago I was learning how to do this."

Patterson won Round 3 and Round 8, as well as placed in eight other rounds to earn an NFSRrecord $85,726. He finished atop the world standings with $190,242, a single-season steer roping earnings mark.

Patterson's NFSR earnings broke the mark of $70,651 set by Cody Lee in 2016. Patterson also won the average with a 97.7-second time on nine head to collect $27,347.

Scott Snedecor took second place in the world standings with $95,951 – $94,291 behind Patterson.

Patterson earned $104,516 in the regular season, which ended Sept. 30, which set the steer roping regular season record. And he kept cashing checks at the Kansas Star.

Cole broke the singleseason steer roping earnings record of $142,350 set by his father Rocky in 2016. Rocky finished 10th in the world standings with $63,029.

Cole joins his father as a steer roping world

champion. Rocky won championships in 200910, 2012 and 2016.

The Pattersons are the third father and son to win steer roping world titles. They join John McEntire (1934) and Clark McEntire (195657, 1961) and Charles Good (1975) and Gary Good (1979).

The holiday season is one of giving to others, which means it’s also a time of spending.

Adding to the stress of the holidays this year are concerns of worker and product shortages along with shipping delays. One sure way to help relieve this stress is to create and stick to a holiday budget. Every single one of us has been impacted in some way by the (contd on page 10) pandemic and if there’s anything that 20202021 taught us, it’s the need to plan ahead for life’s unexpected events.

Always remember, planning, budgeting, and controlling spending are essential components of a healthy financial life.

Set aside an hour or so to work on your budget and I guarantee you’ll have more holiday cheer.

To those of you who have already saved funds throughout the year, I’m impressed, you’re ahead of the game!

The National Retailers Association reports that average spending for the 2020 holidays was $997.73. This may help set your budget or another rule of thumb for spending is to allow 1.5%

of your income. If, after assessing your available budget, you are coming up short you may want to rethink gift giving.

I know folks who are organizing a volunteer day with friends to celebrate the holiday through giving to others in a year of great need.

Another idea is DIY gifts such as baked goods and coupons offering the gift of time for babysitting, a homemade meal, or wherever your talents lead you. You may also be able to cut some expenses, like specialty coffees and lunches out, to bolster your budget.

Here are the steps to make a holiday budget: 1.

Make a list of expenses and check it twice. Include all holiday giving in addition to gifts. Things like greeting cards, decorations, wrapping paper, shipping, office parties and charity. You can look at last year’s credit card and bank statements to see past expenditures.

HUNTING CAMP HAPPENINGS

Hunting is much more than killing. Camp life hijinks include stories that often outlive the subjects.

One lease had a hunter who woke up the entire deer camp during that precious 45-minutes before the alarm by getting up, dressing, and leaving for his blind well before daylight.

He prided himself by getting in the stand early so he wouldn’t spook deer by stumbling into the blind in the dark.

He’d then go back to sleep in the blind for a

short nap before daylight woke him up.

Tiring of the disturbance, a couple of hunters taped black plastic garbage bags over the blind’s windows. Sure enough, the hunter arrived early, dozed off and slept through daylight in the darkened stand, waking well after sunup! He was not amused.

Another man woke up our ENTIRE camp well before 4:00 a.m. looking for the hunter who had the cord to the coffee pot. That provoked talk of mayhem.

Numerous leases have had someone who forgot a necessary hunting component. The first lease I was ever on had a man who forgot his ammo. The night before opening day, he asked who shot a .30-30, hoping to borrow bullets.

Once a popular caliber, by then, few hunters shot .30-30s. And ammo shops in Kerrville were closed.

Another lease I was on had a hunter who took the prize, however. He couldn’t find the bolt to his rifle as he hurriedly packed. His wife had made him remove it so their five-year-old daughter couldn’t shoot anybody. Then he forgot where he put it. So, he brought a .20-gauge shotgun loaded with rifled slugs. The next morning, he missed a

deer that was out of range of his shotgun.

By the next weekend, he had found his bolt -but forgot HIS ammo.

And nobody in camp shot a .308.

On another hunt, a respected female biologist lost her bolt walking to her stand. That can happen, but I’d never heard of it before.

And the gentlemen on that hunt refrained from joking about it the rest of the weekend – right?

Wrong!

And of course, there has been taxidermy stashed in the brush to lure an excited hunter into shooting. Al Brothers, legendary wildlife biologist and Olympic-class jokester, put a mule deer mount in the brush and drove hunters close enough to see it.

A highly excited, now former Speaker of the Texas House of Representative, put a couple of rounds though it before somebody laughed.

Mule deer don’t exist in South Texas.

My favorite is when my insurance agent shot out the window in my VW van. But it was Hitler’s fault. Der Fürher ordered an ultra-economical vehicle for “the people (Volks).”

The windows in my van didn’t go all the way down inside the door.

He later took a hunter I know to the blind and stopped suddenly when they spied the counterfeit cat. The hunter reacted quickly, took aim, and fired. He made a great shot – right between the lion’s two glass eyes and removing part of its paper-mâché head. His marksmanship is still talked about today! Red Snapper Fishing Closed in State Water November 15, 2021

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) closed red snapper fishing in state water November 15. In January 2022, TPWD will reopen red snapper fishing in state waters while federal water will remain closed until the summer.

Under an agreement between TPWD and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), TPWD can establish the opening and closing dates of the annual red snapper fishery in federal waters while also continuing to manage red snapper fishing in state water. As part of this agreement, however, Texas must close the entire fishery when the state’s allotted poundage is reached for the year. Traditionally, TPWD has provided for a year-round red snapper fishing season in state waters and a limited red snapper fishing season in federal waters that begins in June and closes after a certain number of days. The length of the season in federal waters has been calculated to allow for a year-round season in state waters while remaining under the allotted annual catch limit

applied to landings from state and federal waters combined.

In 2019, Texas anglers took advantage of unusually calm offshore conditions in early June and caught red snapper at a higher rate than the year before. TPWD, in fact, closed the federal season earlier than had originally been predicted, but then allowed state waters to remain open.

Unfortunately, in August of 2020 NMFS notified Texas that they believed Texas had exceeded the annual catch limit in 2019. Upon finalization and extensive review of all the data collected, it was determined that Texas exceeded its allotted poundage, by approximately 62,000 lbs.

As a condition of the agreement whereby states have more control to set seasons for the private recreational fishery in their state, the red snapper pounds that exceeded the annual catch limit must be paid back.

In 2020, Texas filed a lawsuit challenging NMFS’ implementation of a payback to address an overage of the Texas catch limit from 2019 until all of the differenc-

es in calculation and any other issues that caused the differences could be determined.

For 2020 and beyond, TPWD has attempted to streamline, further automate and alter some of the reporting processes to prevent any future data issues that had occurred in 2019. TPWD will continue to work with NMFS to ensure that both entities are using the same approach to calculate landing estimates so there will not be future discrepancies in the calculations.

“Last year, TPWD challenged the rule and methodology NMFS used to calculate the amount of red snapper landed by private anglers in Texas,” said Robin Riechers, TPWD’s Coastal Fisheries Division Director.

“While we were trying to determine and resolve the differences in TPWD and NMFS estimates, we allowed Texas anglers to fish for red snapper.

Per our agreement with NMFS it is now the time for us to address those overages in order to preserve as many days as we can for red snapper fishing in 2022.” (contd on page 8)

Red Snapper Fishing Closed (contd) Results from the Harte Research Institute’s The Great Red Snapper Count estimate there are 22 million red snapper in state and federal waters off of Texas and 118 million in the Gulf of Mexico. This study provided an overall abundance estimate as opposed to the previous estimate of approximately 36 million red snapper in the Gulf.

This finding certainly helps to support that red snapper abundance off of Texas is robust and supports what many anglers have been telling us.

“Moving forward, TPWD hopes that the Gulf Council will utilize the results from The Great Red Snapper Count to better manage and sustain red snapper populations in Texas,”

Rocky was thrilled to have his son reach the top of the PRCA summit like he has.

"Watching Cole win a gold buckle is something else," he said. "It is pretty special to get to compete with him and then get to watch him put on a dominating performance like he did here was great to see. You can teach anybody to do this, but they have to be willing to bang their head against the wall every day to work at if they want to rope like he did here (at the NFSR)."

Cole placed second in Round 1 (10.3 seconds); fourth in Round 2 (12.2); and then won Round 3 (9.5). He followed that up with second-place finishes in Round 4 (11.2) and Round 5 (9.9).

On Saturday, Cole failed to place in Round 6 and rebounded to take fourth in Round 7 (11.6). Then,

he clocked 9.9 seconds to win Round 8. In Round 9, he took third at 11.2 seconds.

The only drama left for Cole in Round 10 was to see if he could set the NFSR 10-head average record held by Trevor Brazile at 111.3 seconds and established in 2015.

Cole needed a 13.5-second run, and he came up short with a no time.

"Missing that last one is probably going to keep me up a few nights, but I think I did pretty well here," Cole said. "That just shows how good Trevor Brazile is."

Cole still won the average and he and Rocky became the fifth father and son to accomplish that feat in steer roping joining the company of Jim Snively (1959) and Joe Snively (1961, 1972); James Allen (1971) and Guy Allen (1989, 1991, 1997, 2000, 2004); Charles Good (1976) and Gary Good (1979); and Jim Davis (1988) and Bryce Davis (2009).

16, the 2021 Nutrena Steer Roping Horse of the Year presented by AQHA at the Kansas Star.

"A lot of what I have been able to do comes back to this horse," Cole said. "I feel like I have an unfair advantage when I saddle this horse in the morning.

That's not a knock on anybody else's horse.

There were so many good horses that were in this building this weekend, but this horse right here has something special about him."

Thomas Smith won an event-best three rounds.

He won Round 1 with a 10.0-second time and then tied the Round 4 NFSR record with a 9.0-second winning time. Snedecor set the Round 4 record in 2020. Smith added the Round 6 win with a 10.3 run. He earned $32,807 at the NFSR. Chet Herren ($44,705), who was second in the average, and Jess Tierney ($43,779) won the second and third most money at the 2021 NFSR. time to win the Colby Goodwin Award. The Second Go-Round Award is given in honor of the late Goodwin, who passed away after being injured during the ninth round of 1999 NFSR.

Wood, who finished sixth in the world standings with $82,307 also won the Dixon McGowan Award, given to the highest-ranked first-time qualifier to the NFSR. The award memorializes

McGowan, who died at age 23 in an automobile accident May 10, 1997.

Wood also was the Resistol All-Around and Steer Roping Rookie of the Year.
