This is going to be a personal feelings column and some of you may want to just stop reading right here. I am struggling with a couple of business decisions about how to handle two very different situations and it’s not often that I am this indecisive about things, but these two problems are really bugging me and I’m going to have to spend some time sorting them out before I can or will share the details with my readers.

The first problem has to do with some damaging information that I just happened to find laying on the ground(it must have accidentally fallen out of somebody’s pocket) and after con-

sulting with a few trusted friends, I decided to hold off on printing the information in the newspaper. One of the main reasons is that the information could have some damaging political implications and I don’t want to be accused of influencing an already heated political race, although I have already been accused of doing just that because I printed some signs and push cards for some of the candidates.

Here’s a newsflash for you folks......we are in the printing business..... it’s what we do for a living.......we buy paper by the truckloads and ink by the barrel. Anyway, I will more than likely print the information

Opinion & Entertainment after the election and let the chips fall where they may, but at least I can’t be accused of providing an October surprise, albeit on a very small local level.

The second matter has to do with a long standing relationship with an attorney that I considered a friend. He and I are having a spat and I was considering my next move and I was mentally going through all of the derogatory conversations , emails, and text messages over the years in order to plan my next move and then I thought to myself.....

No, you were wrong in the first place, just let it go. I had apologized to the offended party and now I’m publicly apologizing for my wrong doings. And then I received word that he(the attorney) had run his mouth after a board meeting and brought my children and their issues into a conversation about the matter

that started all of this spat in the first place.

I simply can’t let it go as this is now working on me mentally and this may get ugly before all of this is resolved.

Maybe we should all read my fellow columnist Christy’s article more and try to find the good in people instead of tearing at each other.

Now, onto my personal life. Notwithstanding all of the strife that is going on in my business world, I’m about as happy personally as I have been in a really long time. Finding someone to share good conversation, relaxed meals, and a little time on the dance floor does wonders for the soul

LOBLOLLY HAS BEEN RESURRECTED

Gary is a small town in Panola County near the county seat of Carthage.

The high school in Gary has about 275 students.

Back in the 70’s some folk crafts were still being practiced around Gary and a teacher at Gary High School, a man named Lincoln King, thought it would be a good idea to report on bonnet makers, hominy cooks, people who make shoe laces from squirrel hides and other people doing things the old fashioned way. He and his students began a folklore publication called Loblolly, named for the Loblolly pine tree. It attracted state and national attention and was published for 30 years until Mr. King retired in 2002.

One of Mr. Kind’s former students from the Loblolly days, Nerissa Coligan, is now an English and journalism teacher at Gary High School and in 2017 decided to revive Loblolly. The first issue featured an article on Mr. King and some stories from previous Loblolly publications, including one about Bonnie and Clyde, the outlaw couple that had some connections in

Panola County. The entire issue with a publication run of 500 sold out.

The second annual publication is about country music. The current issue is about storytellers.

Nerissa says the focus has shifted somewhat from folklore to general interest.

“My upper level journalism students put out the Loblolly now. We kind of just choose topics that have interested the kids and that we knew we could find somebody to interview locally. It’s definitely a team effort. I come up with some suggestions and the students come up with some. We video the interviews and then transcribe the recorded interview for the magazine.

It’s sort of an oral history publication. The response has been great.

Everyone who gets one is very pleased with it.”

Loblolly is sold in the Gary store and at different events and venues around Carthage.

Of course parents buy copies that feature their kids’ articles.

The price for the 66-page publication is ten dollars.

“It’s a full color, high gloss magazine. We sell ads to

local businesses to cover the cost of printing. We use an online printer and my kids are actually doing the layout, the design, getting it camera ready to send to the printer. So they have really bumped up their publishing skills. They are proud of the work they do and I’m extremely proud of them.”

Lincoln King kept in touch with the students after he retired and when he died last year left a large sum of money to make sure the publication would continue. Nerissa says Mr. King donated an amount large enough to fund an annual scholarship to one or two deserving seniors who worked on Loblolly.

There aren’t many high schools of any size, much less one with fewer than 300 students that would even undertake a publication like this. It’s quite unique.

Eighteen individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, October 18 and Friday, October 23. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Winnie Stowell EMS to Get New Ambulance

By Wade Thibodeaux The Winnie Stowell Emergency Medical Service Board of Directors met in regular session on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 7:00 pm. in the conference room of the EMS Station located at 249 Broadway in Winnie, Texas.

One of the items in the EMS Coordinators report was the discussion that the service had requested

and been approved by Chambers County for a new ambulance. The new unit will be a larger Ford F-450 with some new features that will enhance patient comfort and care as well as assist the medics while they are caring for the patients.

He also reported that the service had received 71 calls for assistance in the month of September and that makes 675 total

calls so far in 2020. The financial report showed $13,793.29 in monthly expenses and the board approved the purchase of 2 specialized lift chairs to assist with patients who had fallen. The group agreed to meet with the Winnie Stowell Hospital District on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 to discuss an agreement to handle patient transfers out of Riceland

Medical Center. The board went into executive session at 7:33 pm. to discuss personnel matters with no action taken after returning to regular session. The next meeting of the Winnie Stowell EMS Board of Directors will be Monday, November 16, 2020 at 7:00 pm. in the conference room of the WSEMS located at 249 Broadway in Winnie, Texas.

Lions Club Announces Community Assistance Campaign The Winnie Stowell Lions club has announced a campaign to raise funds to assist the community, in it’s goal to fulfill the mission of all Lions Clubs around the world. This, in spite of the ongoing challenges of hurricanes, floods and the Covid 19 pandemic.

Ordinarily, by this time of year, the Lions Club would have conducted numerous fundraisers and already donated much of that money back to the community into areas of need. This year there have been no fundraisers due to the ongoing pandemic.

However, after a long break, the club has begun meeting again and is eager to get back to their mission of helping where they can.

“This will be different than any of our past fundraisers in that we will not be selling raffle tickets, cakes or plate lunches.” said Lions Club president Bill Keating. “We are going to simply ask those that are able to contribute to please make a contribution to the Lions Club and we will make sure that it goes to those that are in need.”

Keating said that the club realizes that there are people in the community that are suffering in a lot of ways, either with actual illness or from job losses or reductions in work hours because of the pandemic. “While there are many individuals and businesses that are struggling due to the current situation, many are relatively unaffected and some even

doing quite well.” he said.

The Winnie Stowell Lions club was re-formed in 2015 after having been inactive for several years. Since 2015 they have raised and contributed back to the community $22,723. The club has 21 members and through dues, helps to support Lions Club International and also the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, TX which is a remarkable camp for children with physical and mental challenges.

The Lions Club has made donations to many individuals, organizations and causes including the Child Welfare Board, Lone Star Guardians, Hurricane Harvey Relief, Project Graduation, St Vincent de Paul, Lions Eye Bank and United Way among many, many more.

The Lions club is also seeking members to help with their mission of supporting the community.

"Turbulence"

I was on a plane bound for Chicago, but the “friendly skies” were not so friendly that day. For most of the two-hour flight, we were tossed up and down and side to side. It was so rough that the attendants stayed strapped in as well.

However, in spite of the rough ride, our pilot skillfully brought the plane down and to a gentle stop.

When on the ground, I thought of that old saying, “The Lord never promised us a calm passage, just a safe landing.”

But while in the air, the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:20 kept coming to my mind, “…and lo, I am with you always!”

I did a little social experiment this week. I asked one day what you all were thankful for. Just one item. Overwhelmingly, you responded in varying degrees, with family. Loved ones. Those we hold near and dear. Then I watched as many attacked others based on their political beliefs and views.

Makes me wonder, what exactly will our holidays look like this year?

The divide is suffocating in our country right now. Never in my 53 years did I think people would actually mock,

make fun of, verbally attack, and degrade one another........ over a mask. Over politics.

Over people you don’t even know. You know what they want you to know, and even at that it is the cleaned up super nice version. But yet, these people we don’t know, will inadvertently come sit at your table for Thanksgiving.

And drive arguments, fights, and discord.

Sitting there like the Thanksgiving turkey, about to be carved up. The ugly discord of American politics.

WHY???? What are we thinking? We are inviting the enemy of hate to sit down at a time of gratitude. No, the real person won’t walk in, but trust me, we have proven time and again, the presence of hate and discord is much larger than a physical human body. It takes up just as much space. And is far worse than the most obnoxious relative you have.

Guys, think about what you are doing. Think about the upcoming holidays. What are you going to discuss? Are

you going to ask your relative how their job is? Are you going to ask them how their children are? Are you going to actually discuss anything that truly matters......or are you going to fall off into a political diatribe, and everyone leaves mad? What do you want your holiday season to be?

Like it or not, you have friends and family that will not be here for the next holiday. Life.......and death.........happen. And your favorite political character does not give a damn if you lose someone. They will not be there to comfort you when someone is snatched from you unexpectedly. They certainly will not be there with your ailing parents, grandparents, and family. More than that, they will not mediate your family fight, all because you argued over a mask.

If you are lucky enough to still have family alive to celebrate a holiday with, then steer clear of the political nonsense. Come up with diversion topics. Just stop.

Heck, discuss recipes, talk to the kids, ask them how school is.

Ask your grandmother for her recipe. Discuss your dad’s job with him. Talk to your child about their volunteer work. Ask the elders to tell of their holidays as kids........ and RECORD IT. There is a lot you can discuss, that is of real importance to YOUR FAMILY. TAKE ADVANTAGE of this time.

Happy Sunday peeps, pretty sure my family can be put on notice that politics are off limits this year. Heck every year. We have varying opinions in our family. I will not let the political choice of one cause a divide for all. It simply is not worth it. Enjoy the season we are quickly entering, maybe start your meals by saying what each of you are thankful for.

Shed some tears for those lost, not for those differing opinions that boiled over.

YOUR OPINION is not the only correct one. But we can discuss that next week.

NOTICE OF RATE CHANGE REQUEST

On October 19, 2020, Entergy Texas, Inc. (“ETI”) filed an application to amend its Transmission Cost Recovery Factor (“TCRF”) with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (“Commission” or “PUC”). The application was assigned PUC Docket No. 51406. The proposed TCRF is requested in accordance with the Public Utility Regulatory Act § 36.209 and 16 TAC § 25.239. A TCRF allows a utility to recover its reasonable and necessary costs that have occurred since the end of the test year in the utility’s last base rate case for transmission infrastructure improvement and changes in wholesale transmission charges to the electric utility under a tariff approved by a federal regulatory authority. In its requested amendment, ETI is seeking recovery of costs for transmission capital investments it incurred from July 1, 2019 through August 31, 2020. ETI also seeks to recover approved transmission charges that are not otherwise being recovered through rates.

The proposed TCRF as amended would result in total TCRF retail revenues of approximately $51.0 million, which is $31.6 million in incremental annual TCRF revenue beyond ETI’s currently effective TCRF. This $31.6 million amount would be a 3.3% increase in ETI’s annualized non-fuel revenue requirement as compared to revenues approved in Docket No. 48371, ETI’s most recent base rate case, and a 2.1% increase in ETI’s overall annualized revenue requirement including fuel costs as compared to such revenues as approved in Docket No. 48371. The impact of the rate change on various customer classes will vary from the overall impact described in this notice.

ETI has requested that an intervention deadline and hearing request deadline of November 30, 2020 be established, and that, if no hearing is requested, the Commission adopt an order approving the proposed TCRF at or before its currently-scheduled open meeting on January 14, 2021. All customers in ETI’s Texas retail rate classes are affected by this request.

“THE NIGHT BEFORE”

T’was the night before deer season and all thru the camp…

NO! Please keep reading. I promise this won’t be another trite parody of the Christmas poem!

We’re all used up on those.

But not unlike the December 24th anticipation of what’s coming, on the days before deer season -- and the evening preceding -the expectations, hopes,

and fears run high. And they’re not visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads.

Un uh. It’s thoughts of rendezvousing with old hunting buddies, sharing refreshments and tales of past hunts around a campfire or cabin fireplace, perhaps meeting new hunting mates, and laughing at anything that in a different environment might not even draw a smile.

But in this season, it’s different. We’ve left our cares and unfinished work at the city limits as we journeyed to deer camp.

And we’re different people -- at least for this weekend and a few days afterwards.

We’ve abandoned the desperation and discontentment of the 2020 “Pandamit”, become much more likable.

A friend and hunting buddy, Joe Colbert, referred to the evening before the season opens as the “Deer Hunters’ Ball”. I don’t have a lease this season but will celebrate the opener around our fire pit with my two hunting dogs and my wife, who has put more meat in the freezer

lately than I have.

One year, we went to Johnson’s Trading Post in Bee Cave for supper because that was where some hunters went on that evening.

Bandera formerly had a weekend celebration beginning the night before. It’s on their current calendar, but no information was available. It was a veritable BLAST! Another time, my girlfriend became miffed because I got off a plane from a business trip, kissed her hello and headed to the deer lease for our version of the “ball”! After all, that was when we drew doe permits!

At the lease, old tales are re-told about hunters who forgot to bring ammo or even one man who arrived without the bolt to his bolt-action rifle.

Accounts of legendary game crimes are replayed, too, like the ones about two men who claimed to have shot huge bucks, which proved fraudulent.

The night before the opener is often a sleepless one. But the only sleep-depriving worries are about over-sleeping.

And daydreams in the dark of big bucks cause some twisting and turning, too – like a kid wondering what Santa will bring.

On my first night on my first deer lease, all of the above kept me awake along with the cacophony of snoring from too many men in a too-small room.

Personally, I was wishing my buddy and I hadn’t spent the entire trip to Kerrville dipping chips into a kettle of “Wick Fowler’s 4-Alarm Chili!” Even without the chili, I still have trouble sleeping the night before.

The grandest feeling, though, is leaving town and troubles behind as you head to the hunt on a cool, sunlit afternoon as the trees begin to turn. And all’s right in the world.

Deer season opens in most of Texas on Saturday, November 7. Check the TPW Outdoor Annual, though for the bag limit in the county in which you hunt. And be assured that like the buck pictured here, more deer will see YOU on opening day than you will see them. Photo by John Jefferson.
