East Chambers Outlasts the Buna Cougars

Buccaneers took on the Buna Cougars at Buccaneer Stadium last Friday and it was a scoring bonanza. It seemed like neither team could stop the other's offense and it ended up with only one punt in the game and it came with about a minute and a half left to play. Each team did have a turnover on downs, but that was a rare occasion when it was too close to punt and too far to try a field Hayden Reeves(#6) was the workhorse for the Bucs in last Friday's victory goal. The Bucs had 363 over the Buna Cougars.

Voting hours during the week of October 18-22, 2021 are 8:00am until 5:00pm and hours during the week of October 25-29, 2021 are 7:00am until 7:00pm. Election day is November 2, 2021 and all polling locations are open 7:00am until 7:00pm.

By Wade Thibodeaux The Winnie-Stowell Lions club has announced that they are holding a raffle for 2 tickets to thevHouston Texans November 28th NFL game against the New York Jets. The raffle will include a $100 concession card along with an NRG Stadium parking pass. “We are really excited to be able to offer this ticket package to the Texans game against the Jets. It will be an opportunity to experience an NFL game at a premier stadium and includesv$100 concession card with a parking pass,” said Bill Keating, president of the WS Lions Club. He added, “We really appreciate Buck Thornton at Clarus Wealth Group for donating

the tickets for the raffle.”

The proceeds from the raffle will be used by the Lions Club to further their work in service to the community.

“This raffle will help fund the things that we do for the community such as the appreciation lunch that we will provide to area police, fire, EMS and other first responders later in October,” Keating said. The cost of the raffle tickets will be $10 with discounts for multiple tickets. They will be available from any Lions Club member or by calling the Keating office at 409296-4005. The drawing will be held on Friday, Nov 19 th and the game is on Sunday, Nov 28th at Noon in NRG Stadium in Houston.

Fire crews responded shortly after Midnight to fight the blaze and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

by Wade Thibodeaux What a week.....it all started on Monday with a late start leaving Huntsville headed to Winnie. Thankfully, Monday was a holiday for banks and the post office therefore I didn’t have to worry about any banking business or mailing business for that matter, but I still had a school board meeting in Winnie that evening that interrupted my work on the papers. Due to the late start, I really didn’t get to get much done on the papers before I had to stop and attend the school board meeting and then a quick bite to eat and back to the office to work on the papers. I finally got all of the stuff for the papers sent off about Midnight and then wrapped things up at the office and made it to bed about 1:00 am. A few minutes before 2:00 am. my phone goes off and there is a fire at a commercial warehouse in the neighboring town.

So, not much sleep Monday night(Tuesday morning) and back at the office to send the papers off to the printer via the computer before I made a trip to Anahuac to attend

Chambers County Commissioners Court. I was able to catch a 45 minute nap Tuesday afternoon before the papers arrived from the printer and it was all hands on deck to make the 5:00 deadline at the post office. Tuesday evening I ran my little paper route to Anahuac(so, two trips to Anahuac in one day for me) before grabbing a bite to eat and retiring somewhat early, 10:00 pm.

Wednesday was a little more relaxed as my normal second Wednesday meeting was postponed a week until the next Wednesday(this week) and that allowed me to get a little work done at the office. Little things like payroll need to get done on a somewhat regular basis or there is a revolt from the staff....I don’t know why it’s so important to them, but they seem to like getting paid on a regular basis. Wednesday evening involved a meeting at the Chambers County Emergency Services District No1 and then I jumped in the truck to drive back to Huntsville. I knew that I was leaving town Thursday and

Opinion & Entertainment so I worked at my office in Huntsville until about 1:00 am. before turning in for the night. Thursday morning I was up at 6:15 am. in order to get the Walker County Press to the post office in time for their delivery schedule. A little more desk work before I jumped in the truck to head to Gainesville, Texas to pick up some stuff that I purchased in an online auction and then I snuck across the Red River to that little casino called Winstar(It’s the biggest casino in the world) to play a few hands of cards. The card game actually worked out okay this time and I made enough to pay for dinner for two and some gas money for the trip. I think that short little card games are better for me because I don’t have the time to return what I’ve won and it’s just a better scenario for me to walk away after a couple of hours. Anyway, I was in bed by 1:00 am.

Friday morning was not too early, but I did have to get up and get going because I had to get back to Huntsville and unload my auction purchases before I headed back to Winnie to cover an East Chambers football game and I had already planned a stop to check on cows in Elkhart because it was only an hour out of the way. As I was traveling through Athens, Texas, I saw a sign for an old cattle breeder friend of mine that wasn’t supposed to be in Athens, he was supposed to be

in Mineola, Texas. I guess he had moved and I was out of the cattle loop and didn’t realize it, but as I passed the sign I made a quick decision to turn around and see if he was home. Sure enough, he was home and we sat on his front porch and visited for a good 30 minutes. Best 30 minutes I’ve probably spent in the last 20 years. We caught up on a lot of cattle stuff and some personal stuff too before I had to make a getaway. I stopped and checked on the cows and didn’t fix the water problem that I wanted to get fixed because the problem was not what I thought it was and so I planned to come back on Saturday. I stopped in Huntsville and unloaded my stuff and headed off to Winnie.

Athens, I was running about 45 minutes late and I missed part of the football game, but as luck would have it there was a lightning delay and I only missed one possession.

I had a suspicion that an old college buddy was in town and after the game I circled by one of the watering holes and sure enough he was there with one of my running buddies. I pulled in and had a cold one....or two. I managed to get to bed early Saturday morning.

Saturday was back to Huntsville and tried to get some preparatory work done on the papers, but I kept getting interrupted. I was supposed to go to Elkhart, but I decided to delay it a day so that I could get a full day in Elkhart as opposed to a partial day.

I was able to get to bed at a decent hour Saturday night and that was a good thing because Sunday morning I headed back to Elkhart and rode a tractor all day gathering round bales and fixing my water leak at the cow trough.

It’s now Midnight and I’m sitting down to write this column before I go to bed and get up in the morning to head to Winnie to start all over again. It’s a good thing that I don’t have a job......I don’t know how I would get all of this done if I had to work somewhere with a regular schedule. I guess that I’m just a slow learner because I keep thinking that I’ll eventually have time to go fishing. Till next time, I’m...............Wade in the Shade.

A QUICK BUNCH OF INTERVIEWS

Sue Land sent me an email and said, “You oughta come to Hico. We’ve got a bunch of great folks here and they would make good subjects for your radio program and newspaper column.”

So I went. I parked my car just before noon on a Friday and left 4 hours later with 7 interviews. They all took place within a 2-block area of downtown Hico.

Sue arranged all the interviews, scheduling them 30 minutes apart.

Sue is a magnificent host and guide. And by the way, she is an interesting person herself.

She writes murder mysteries.

“The stories are all from my imagination. I just get an idea and start writing.” She has written 4 books and is spearheading a big book signing of prominent Texas writers the first weekend in November. She volunteers at the Billy the Kid Museum in Hico. “Billy was killed in New Mexico but he died in Texas,” says Sue. She told me a little bit about how Billy ended up in Hico and Hamilton but referred me to Robert Dean, President of the Billy The Kid Museum.

“Billy the Kid came here and was known as Brushy Bill Roberts,” says Robert.

“We sell copies of his

autobiography here at the museum and they sell like crazy. He’s buried in Hamilton and people leave all kinds of things at his grave. He died here on a downtown street in 1950 of a heart attack at the age of 91.”

My next stop was my favorite: Kevin Wenzel’s chocolate kitchen.

He makes Wiseman House Chocolates that go all over the US. He specializes in truffles, ganache and toffee with origins in Belgium and Venezuela flavored with unique liqueurs and spices. He’s been making delicious and exotic chocolates for 25 years. I took home some samples.

Exquisite. I’ll order more.

I interviewed Trish McMillin who lives upstairs in a downtown building full of antiques, gift items and clothing. Her business is called Sugar Moon Market.

She and her sisters started the business 15 years ago and have shopped for antiques in Europe and the US. After retiring from an electric utility Trish spent 2 years in Iraq working as a government contractor keeping track of money spent for military supplies.

Then I went to the Wooden Indian Cigar store owned by

Roy Ward. He sells cigars (from $5 to $30 each) and Arbuckle Coffee, which has been around since 1959 and comes with a peppermint stick in every package.

My next stop was the popcorn store owned by Steve and Donna McInnis.

You wouldn’t believe how much popcorn they sell: thousands of dollars at a time to schools, businesses and all kinds of events.

They can do popcorn in a variety of colors. While I was there they were getting ready to ship 200 huge bags of popcorn to Norway.

I interviewed Dillon Riechard at Jersey Lilly’s, a Mexican Food Restaurant that is an anchor business in downtown Hico.

It’s kind of like the community center.

He bought the business from his parents a year ago. I finished up at Hill Country Dwellers, which designs homes and sells home furnishings.

Twenty-Seven individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, October 10 and Saturday, October 16 . Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Moore for Your Money by Ken Moore Help Us Fight the Proposed IRS Reporting Mandate Included in the current administration’s multi-trillion-dollar reconciliation bill is a new mandate that would allow the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to see information on all Americans’ private bank accounts of $600 or more. Let me repeat: this would allow the IRS to see detailed information on the deposits and withdrawals of every customer account above the amount of $600. As a community banker, this raises all kinds of alarms, and I am deeply concerned. As you might imag-

ine, banks across the country are hearing concerns from their customers about this proposed new mandate. The required release of bank account information includes all financial institutions, banks, and credit unions. Now, those of you who know me, know I do not mix politics with business, but the implications of this particular proposal are so important, I must address it.

• There is mixed messaging on the purpose of this proposal.

Purportedly the mandate is designed to catch the wealthy breaking tax laws and to stop

those who are not complying with the tax code. However, I feel quite the opposite effect will occur—this proposal is not even remotely targeted to the wealthy segment of our population but directly aimed at regular Americans, low- and mid-income earners.

Wealthy individuals and companies are already tracked as their transactions roll into their tax returns. Plus, if this was really about tracking wealthy billionaires, the transaction limit would be $100,000 not $600. The low $600 threshold for reporting will let the IRS know when you buy a TV or

take out cash for Christmas gifts or even transfer funds between accounts. Any and all banking transactions of $600 and above are to be reported to the IRS. • There are obvious privacy concerns.

This mandate would create tremendous liability for financial institutions and the IRS by requiring the collection of financial information of nearly every American without any explanation of how the IRS will store, protect, and use this enormous amount of personal information. Unfortunately, we have repeatedly

seen that the IRS is a constant target for hackers and has had multiple data breaches in the recent past.

• This is a vast overreach of the IRS. Thousands of new IRS agents will be armed with the authority to investigate your bank account, to monitor every single account and all account transactions above the $600 minimum.

Indiscriminate, blanket data collection would amount to a troubling effort to profile American taxpayers based on account characteristics without grounds to do so. The IRS will not need a warrant to look at your private financial transactions and they will not need your permission,

as they currently do.

• Join us in telling Congress to reject this proposal.

While this proposed mandate is under consideration, I urge you to act now and contact your state and federal lawmakers to oppose this new IRS reporting provision. Together we can make our voices heard.

When Matthew was in kindergarten his mother got a call from his teacher wanting to meet. When they met, the teacher began explaining how she had all her students make finger puppets that day. They had to give them names, then go around the room introducing themselves and their puppet to one another. As she walked around observing and listening, she noticed something different about Matthew’s introduction. She asked him, “Matthew, what’s your puppet’s name?”

Matthew replied, “John.”

The teacher said, “Doesn’t he have a last name?”

Matthew replied, “Yes, ma’am, it’s 3:16.” That was the first Bible verse his mother introduced to him.

In my quest to handle things, work smarter not harder, I tend to be a multi tasker. Most weekends my Saturday consists of many errands while in town.

Gas, groceries, drop offs at goodwill, grab lunch, hair cuts, dog grooms, mail things, and more. This week was no different.

But this week, Mom and I needed to get flu shots. My ever efficient self had printed out the forms online, and had them ready for when we got to the pharmacy.

For those that don’t

know, if you deal with the mobility impaired, immune suppressed, or just don’t want to be around people, King’s will come to your car!

Add that to my super efficient self, swing thru the drive thru and they come out to the car!

So Mom and I are waiting and a girl comes out and asks if we have had pneumonia shot….. Mom says yes, I say no, she says how old are you, I tell her, she says oh you’re not old enough, you would need a script for it. I’m super excited thinking, finally! I’m not old enough for something even if it is a shot.

Then I say, I’ve been thinking about the shingles vaccine, oh no problem! So back she goes, a few minutes later she comes out and they have one shot for mom and two for me. If y’all had any clue how

much I despise needles you would know this is major progress for me!!!

So we get our shots, and carry on. Groceries, gas, lunch, mail some stuff and home. I have a friend come by, we visit for a while and watch the Astros….. and we will skip over that portion of my day.

Fast forward to about 7:30 last night and I am so tired I can’t hold my eyes open!!! I finally go to bed at 9, and am a happy camper…… until I wake up at 6. I wonder what I did that has my whole body sore. I feel like I’ve been working out! Continue on and it takes me about 3 hours to finally admit, I just feel like crap. Go to grab Tylenol and see this red rash on my face and I wonder what is going on.

Then…… I remember.

butt got two vaccines yesterday.

Slowly the Tylenol kicks in, I muddle through cooking lunch, and Mom even goes home early. I’m sure I was as much company as a wet noodle.

Happy Sunday peeps…… I’m happy to report the rash is gone, I don’t feel like I’ve been beat, but man….. this fatigue ain’t nothing nice. So me, the dog, the cat, and the couch will be hanging out for the remainder of today. I’ve never had a reaction to the flu shot so I’m sure this was the shingles one, and that I did two at once. Y’all take note, do not be an over achiever. Spread your vaccines out. Or plan a day of couch time to ride out the after effects. So much for accomplishing a lot today…..and over achieving.

During the 1920s and 30s, some farmers were said to value their corn crop by the gallon. Bootlegging and “stills” were rampant, though well hidden from “revenooers.”

That bit of Americana passed into oblivion with repeal of prohibition.

Nevertheless, a small Central Texas lake was impounded over a boondocks area where some moonshiners distilled their “corn squeezings” into “white lightning.”

One writer suggested naming it “Bootlegger’s Lake.” I’m glad his name-nominee failed.

Lake,” instead, invoked memories of the past, but did so more poetically.

That small 6,400-acre lake five miles southwest of Belton is a picturesque waterbody, also reachable through Salado, and is a pleasure to fish.

It offers a variety of fish highly sought by Texas anglers: Largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, sunfish, gar, white bass, hybrid stripers and others. The lake is not known as a trophy largemouth lake, but has produced one weighing 13-pounds, which is the lake record.

Since it’s a Corps of Engineers’ lake, there are no homes or boat docks along the shore, meaning possibly fewer boats on the water part of the time – especially during midweek. That adds to the lake’s serenity for those on the water.

One of the most active guides on Stillhouse is Bob Maindelle. He practices catch-and-release. “With the 15,000 to 18,000 fish landed per year,” he said, “I feel it is incumbent upon me to protect the public resource on the small reservoir I fish.” He operates “Holding the Line Guide Service” and expects fall fishing to remain good until about the second week of December.

One thing I admire about his operation is his SKIFF program. “SKIFF” stands for “Soldiers’ Kids Involved in Fishing Fun,” a program that takes military kids fishing at no charge. Qualifying kids

are those separated from parent(s) by their military service, Gold Star kids who have lost a parent while on active duty, and kids of disabled veterans who are unable to take their kids fishing.

This program would have appealed to me when I was about age eight and itching for someone to take me fishing after my father died in Africa during WWII. Maindelle’s development of the program came naturally since he is a West Point graduate and served eight years in the Army. My appreciation for it is similarly based, though educated at Oxford-on-the-Brazos.

Bob recently returned 600-miles from a church-sponsored, home-building mission trip to Juarez, Mexico late one evening, got a little sleep, and met two boys at 7a.m. on Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

Their fathers are both on active U.S. Military duty in South Korea.

After Maindelle gave them a short tutorial on the use of the heavy, MAL inline spinners with improvements he designed for Mepps, they boated a grand total of 136 fish, including 130 white bass, four juvenile hybrid striped bass, and a freshwater drum. All fish were taken on the heavy MAL lures, primarily with a vertical retrieve near the lake’s bottom.

Quail season begins statewide Oct. 30 but outside of South Texas, bobwhite and scaled quail populations continue to their long, slow road to recovery following several years of drought. As such, hunting opportunities and success will vary across the state.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) experts say that during the annual Quail Roadside Survey period in August, which consists of biologists traveling more than 3,300 miles, male Bobwhite quail could be heard calling regularly during morning drives, but adult and brood sightings remained low. Despite reports of birds calling along most routes, the final survey numbers left much to be desired given how great habitat looked across much of the state.

“Apart from the winter storm in February, mild winter conditions statewide were a welcome reprieve for the bobwhite populations coming off a third year of below average abundance,” said John McLaughlin, Upland Game Bird Program Leader for TPWD. “However, a relatively dry start to the year likely put a damper on early nesting activity.

In the Rolling Plains and South Texas, survey numbers were surprisingly the lowest they have been since the survey’s inception in 1978.”

There has also been the suggestion that

the winter storm may have hurt populations, added McLaughlin. To what extent the storm impacted birds is tough to assess, and would be mostly speculative, but it likely presented yet another hurdle to survival and to individuals ramping up for the nesting season.

Scaled quail are better evolved to withstand drought than bobwhites but nonetheless also rely on timely rainfall in the spring and late summer to grow populations. Unfortunately, late rains delayed spring nesting activity and put most counties behind the eight ball.

“Although scaled quail in the Trans-Pecos fared better than their counterparts in the Rolling Plains and South Texas, and have for some time, populations were below average in 2020,” said McLaughlin. “Broadly, we expect hunting conditions will be below average to fair for most counties, especially those along or close to the New Mexico border.”

McLaughlin added, farther east in Terrell County and across the Pecos River in Crockett County in the Edwards Plateau, scaled quail seemed to have benefitted from additional May rainfall.

These areas are where our biologists observed the majority of their scaled quail coveys.

“The most encouraging reports for scaled quail outside the Trans-Pecos have come from the Panhandle and south-

ern Rolling Plains regions, where birds appeared to have caught enough spring rainfall to make a modest push this year,” said McLaughlin. “However, we expect that hunting conditions will be below average to fair, which should hold true for scaled quail across most other parts of the state as well.”

NOTICE OF RATE CHANGE REQUEST

On October 5, 2021, Entergy Texas, Inc. (“ETI”) filed an application to amend its Transmission Cost Recovery Factor (“TCRF”) with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (“Commission” or “PUC”). The application was assigned PUC Docket No. 52624. The proposed TCRF is requested in accordance with the Public Utility Regulatory Act § 36.209 and 16 TAC § 25.239. A TCRF allows a utility to recover its reasonable and necessary costs that have occurred since the end of the test year in the utility’s last base rate case for transmission infrastructure improvement and changes in wholesale transmission charges to the electric utility under a tariff approved by a federal regulatory authority. In its requested amendment, ETI is seeking recovery of costs for transmission capital investments it incurred from September 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021.

ETI also seeks to recover approved transmission charges that are not otherwise being recovered through rates.

The proposed TCRF as amended would result in total TCRF retail revenues of approximately $66.1 million, which is $15.1 million in incremental annual TCRF revenue beyond ETI’s currently effective TCRF. This $15.1 million amount would be a 1.57% increase in ETI’s annualized nonfuel revenue requirement as compared to revenues approved in Docket No. 48371, ETI’s most recent base rate case, and a 1.01%

LEGAL NOTICE increase in ETI’s overall annualized revenue requirement including fuel costs as compared to such revenues. The impact of the rate change on various customer classes will vary from the overall impact described in this notice.

The effective date of the proposed rate change would be the date that a Commission order adopting the proposed TCRF is issued.

ETI has requested that, if no hearing is requested, the Commission adopt an order approving the proposed TCRF at or before its currentlyscheduled open meeting on December 16, 2021.

All customers in ETI’s Texas retail rate classes are affected by this request.

In the rushing department, Hayden Reeves(#6) did most of the damage as he rushed for 167 yards on 28 carries and 3 trips into the endzone while Jacoby Perrault(#10) had 6 carries for 86 yards and a trip across the goal line. Perrault(#10) was also 2 for 2 in the passing

department with one of those passes for 17 yards and a touchdown to Darius Green(#11) who made a tremendous stretching catch in the endzone for the score.

The Bucs will travel to Kirbyville this week to take on the Wildcats at 7:30 pm. on Friday night.
