Chambers County Sheriff's Office Investigates Cruelty to Animal

REWARD INCREASED TO $15,000 Sheriff Hawthorne reports that an additional $5000 has been donated to the reward for information that leads to the arrest and successful prosecution of the people responsible for this crime. If you have any information that would

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne is asking for the public’s assistance in reference to an incident that was reported on October 6, 2020. Deputies responded to a call in the 26900 block of IH-10 in Winnie, Texas, in reference to Cruelty to Livestock Animals.

Deputies discovered someone had entered onto private property by cutting a hole in a fence and gaining access to an area that horses and other livestock are kept.

Once there, the suspect or suspects, placed a rope around a horse’s

neck, possibly in an attempt to steal the horse.

It is believed that the horse struggled and due to abuse by the suspect(s) and the rope being placed improperly around the horse’s neck, the horse was strangled to the point it lost consciousness and died. The rope that was used was still around the horse’s neck and mouth.

An offense of this nature is a state jail felony and could be punishable by confinement in state jail for a minimum 180 days to a maximum of two years, as well as a fine not to exceed $10,000. If you have any information that would be useful in the investigation of this crime, we encour-

Chance Schott Wins Badlands Circuit Six Days Into Rookie Season Less than a week after starting his rookie season, bull rider Chance Schott won the RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo for the second consecutive time and snared the year-end title in the process.

"It truly is a blessing," Schott said. "This has been my goal and a steppingstone for my rookie title and making the NFR. It's totally amazing to take this title home with me, it truly means a lot."

Schott has been orbiting the ProRodeo scene for a while and packs an impressive rodeo résumé, including working with Big Stone Rodeo Inc. and its famed 2018 bull of the year, Spotted Demon.

Schott officially began his rookie season on Oct. 5 and kicked it off by winning the RAM BCFR to earn $4,928 in Minot, N.D., Oct. 11 – a rodeo that nearly didn't happen.

The 2021 season began Oct. 1, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic still lingers. For a while it seemed unlikely the Badlands Circuit would have a finals until the last minute.

The Oct. 11 win also kept the 21-year-old at the top of the Badlands Circuit standings, a feat he missed by a mere $838 in 2019.

"If I rode one more bull or had gone to one more rodeo, but I was just shy of it," Schott said. "So, I tried as hard as I could to make sure I could clinch the title this year."

Schott won the first round with an 87-point ride on Sutton Rodeos' Rock N Roll Fantasy and won the third round with an 86-point ride on Korkow Rodeos' Jambalaya to claim the average by a 7.5-point margin with 173 points on two head.

"I had good confidence since I did well here last year, and this was the

first time I felt ready for a finals and didn't have any worries," Schott said. "I felt mentally and physically prepared for this event."

Schott isn't taking any chances on missing out on battling to be atop the 2021 PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings. Later this week, he's heading to ProRodeo competitions in Harrison, Ark., Denton, Texas, and Waxahachie, Texas.

"They're canceling so many rodeos, it's scary, so the ones I can get into I'm going to try my hardest to be there,” Schott said.

"My goal is to hit 110120 rodeos this year, depending on how the (COVID-19 pandemic) goes, but it usually takes most guys 110-120 rodeos to make the NFR." When he's not on the ProRodeo road, Schott works on a heifer replacement program on 1,200 head and raises bucking bulls with Big

Stone Rodeo Inc. "I finally got it through my head that I belong here, and it's going well for me," Schott said.

"I haven't gotten to compete at Cheyenne (Wyo.), and I'd really love to go to that and Deadwood (S.D.) Days of '76 – I've had the poster for it on my walls since I was a little kid."

Other winners at the $126,091 rodeo were all-around cowboy Eli Lord ($4,576, steer wrestling and team roping); bareback rider Jordan Pelton (258 points on three head); steer wrestler Eli Lord (14.1 seconds on three head); team ropers Cooper White/Tucker White (16.4 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Chuck Schmidt (242 points on three head); tie-down roper Trey Young (26.3 seconds on three head); and barrel racer Amanda Welsh (40.83 seconds on three runs)

Fifteen individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Monday, October 5 and Saturday, October 10. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

was barreling down, and we were going to take a direct hit. But at the last minute.... it wobbled. Lake Charles was hammered, we were shocked, that a 20 mile wobble saved us.

And no one complained.

In fact we were happy.

Saddened for our Louisiana neighbors, we donated, went and helped, and cried for their loss. But I don’t remember one person being mad, that we got dodged.

Fast forward to this week.

Every single source showed this in alignment going in at East Cameron Parish.

And that is exactly where it went. They said anywhere from a 1-3.... came in as a two. Once again, spot on.

What wasn’t counted on, was a mess on the west side. See, we all know that’s the clean side. East side is nasty. We are going

to be good.

But it formed storms and some super fun winds.... say upwards of 70 mph and more, ON THE WEST SIDE. Wait no.... that’s the clean side.... right?? Wrong.

What we got was serious wind, and rain. Let’s get serious guys.... I had 6.07 inches at my house in 24 hours. So not a one of us can fuss about the rain. Remember Harvey?

Imelda? Okie dokie. But that wind!!!! By and large we are ok in comparison to other storms. Yes we lost power. Not like we did in Rita.... or Ike. Last night, I saw three of the most heart felt apologies I’ve ever read, on social media. From our meteorologists. They publicly apologized and felt awful for the missed call. But guys.... seriously?

This isn’t about broken vows or harsh words. No slamming doors and broken hearts.

Instead, it could lead to exactly the opposite, and might even make married life a little bit better for both partners. It’s about the unspoken benefits of men going with other men to hunting camp, and the occasional reluctance of their wives to bless the event. The only leaving home will be temporary and possibly to mutual satisfactions. Read on.

goes on than just hunting, and some of the erroneously imagined happenings may be what causes some wives to resent their mates venturing afield. But there is little of that, if any. It’s really all about hunting and camp life.

I was invited to join a group of wildlife biologists on a hunt near the border years ago. Cartel bloodshed has curtailed much of the tourist trade in Mexico, today, but border towns flourished in those days. We were staying on a ranch only 15 miles from the river, across which awaited unspeakable activities. In deer camp, there was lively and spirited man-talk during every moment around the campfire, skinning pole, and kitchen table, but it all involved hilarious accounts of comical hunting trips

past, legendary bucks bagged (like the Brady Buck and the Dilly Monster), and other hunting related sagas. Not one word was ever uttered about the illicit pleasures just minutes away to the south. We were there to hunt, and the newbies in the bunch may not have anticipated the value of campfire camaraderie. It’s rich. And deep.

Since then, tales have included the time “Javelina” Spahn shot the plastic bug guard off Al Brothers’ pickup truck’s radiator by not realizing his bullet would leave the barrel almost an inch lower than the view in his scope showed. And my insurance agent has tired of my telling about him shooting out the window in my truck. Other tales have included the two cases of guys claiming they

had shot award-winning bucks and implanting antlers in deer skulls which later were proven fake.

Valuable hunting talk is also shared – tips on bullet weights, calibers, firearms care, and techniques. I wasn’t much help in the kitchen, back then, so I washed dishes to do my part.

some of the cooking. I also learned to keep my gear off the floor. And discovered that mops and brooms fit my hands – skills that some husbands still lack.

So, wives shouldn’t dread husbands going hunting. It may be the first time they learn they can do household chores, too.

Besides that, most wives

also enjoy a little respite, themselves. And it gets him out of your hair long enough to get it colored, if you want to do that, or anything else that maybe you’ve been wanting to do by yourself or with other women.

After all, absence really can make the heart grow fonder.

Part of the intrigue of hunting is the camp life and opportunity to get away from the day-to-day struggles in life to a place where matching wits and skills with wildlife is all that matters. The new monthly series

of free webinars “Youth in Action: Conversations About Our Future” is targeted to middle and high school students.

Students can hear from young Native activists and change makers from across the Western Hemisphere who are working toward equity and social justice for Indigenous peoples.

The live conversations, on topics such as mental health and food and water justice, will be archived on the museum’s YouTube channel and available for viewing following the livestream.

Through these new distance learning programs, teachers and students can learn about the rich, complex and dynamic histories and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

by Wade Thibodeaux Man, am I in trouble. It’s Monday evening about midnight and I’m just now sitting down to write this week’s column. My editor’s are screaming at me and I’ve really got to get this done. I sometimes wonder where my time goes, but I did cover a football game Thursday evening and then made a round trip from Huntsville to Houston to Winnie and back to Huntsville.......in the middle of a hurricane on Friday to deliver some political signs. Neither rain, nor sleet, or snow...... or Hurricane Delta can stop me from delivering customer service.....although I was kinda questioning myself as I sat in my truck that was rocking side to side in the wind and I was dripping wet from being out in the storm, but hey, I made it and I will dry out and it will all be okay. And, I may need to admit that I played a lit-

tle this past weekend, but .......where does my time go??????

Now, speaking of politics......I know, I know, I said that I wasn’t going to talk about politics in this column and I think that I have referenced them three times in the last four columns, but I had a chance to watch a little of the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings this morning. It is simply amazing to me how much our Country and the polarization of people has deteriorated in the last 30 or so years. And, I’m talking about both sides of the aisle, those guys and gals are dug in to their positions and I don’t think an atomic bomb could budge either side. A comment was made that 30 years ago the vote was 96-0 for one Court Justice and then a few years later it was 97-0 for another confirmation. These two Justices were appointments from

Opinion & Entertainment different Presidents from opposing political parties, but both sides were able to see the good in the person nominated and that they were qualified and both sides at different times voted to confirm the nominee. Now, fast forward 30 years and I don’t think that the two sides could agree on lunch. It’s all about who has the numbers and the votes, regardless of the item being voted on. The Democrats were lecturing the Republicans and the Republicans were lecturing the Democrats and I don’t think that either side had a clue as to just exactly what they were supposed to be doing in the committee hearing on this confirmation of a new Justice, it was all about posturing for the next big event which is the November 3, 2020 election. And, it’s just getting started, we have several more days of this stuff and I don’t think that I’ve heard one kind word from either side. Just quit all of the positioning and lecturing and take a vote.....all of that talking is not going to change one single thing and I think that they just like hearing themselves talk. Instagram influencer Heather, of Operation Tudor Revival, who’s DIYing her home renovation says, “Office lighting can be both functional and fabulous! I went with an overhead chandelier with a drum shade for an updated look. The shade also helps diffuse light to avoid glare on my computer screen.”

I am still covering High School Football in January and I get to see both East Chambers and Huntsville make deep runs into the playoffs and a couple of State Championships would be great as well.

THE ORIGIN OF TECH’S “GUNS UP” GESTURE

You start out with a closed fist. Then stick out your forefinger and raise your thumb. All of a sudden your hand looks like a cocked pistol.

That’s Texas Tech’s “Guns Up” gesture that students use at sporting events and in greeting each other. Next year, 2021, will mark the 50th year of “Guns Up.” In 1971, Glenn Dippel and his wife Roxie, both graduates of Texas Tech, saw a cartoon of a Yosemite Sam character holding two six-shooters in the air. Roxie said, “What do you think of this?” and did the guns up gesture. Glenn went to the copy machine, and made a copy of his hand in the guns up position.

He sent it to the Saddle Tramps, Tech’s spirit organization, along with a letter saying the gesture could be a way of Tech students to recognize each other and also to combat the University of Texas’s “hook ‘em horns” gesture.

Glenn and Roxie moved to Austin from Lubbock in 1970. “We weren’t emotionally prepared

for all the orange and hook ‘em horns signs all over town. We loved Tech and still do. We still subscribe to the Lubbock newspaper.

That’s where we saw the cartoon that prompted all this. The newspaper’s cartoonist, Dirk West, drew the cartoon.”

In the fall of 1971, Glenn and Roxie went to the UT stadium to see the football game between Texas and Texas Tech. They were surprised to see the Tech cheerleaders and students using the guns up sign.

“Roxie and I looked at each other, raised our eyebrows and wondered if we had started that.”

Glenn and Roxie went to an after game party and Glenn asked somebody about the gesture.

The person replied, “Yeah, some guy in Austin started that.”

By 1975 it was established that Glenn and Roxie had indeed been the originators of the guns up tradition and were recognized by the alumni association.

“We’re tickled to be able to do that for Tech,”

says Glenn. “My two favorite teams are Texas Tech and whoever Texas is playing.”

Glenn grew up in Old Glory, Texas, the only town in the US to have that name. It was originally called Brandenburg but was changed during World War One because it sounded too foreign.

Glenn had the choice of going to either a college in Abilene or Texas Tech.

He knew Abilene was dry at the time, so he chose Tech. He thrived there. His mother said he majored in Roxie. They met at church and have been married 62 years.

He and Roxie both studied accounting and passed the CPA exam in 1971. “We have the distinction of being the only couple in Texas to pass the exam together at the same time.”
