Winnie Stowell EMS Gets First Look at Budget

By Wade Thibodeaux  The Winnie Stowell Ems Board of Directors met in regular session on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 7:00 pm. in the conference room of the EMS Station located at 249 Broadway in Winnie, Texas. The directors took a first look at the budget for the upcoming year, but took no action due to the fact that the budget will be tweaked a little before it is finally accepted at another meeting. Initial figures show $973,000.00 in estimated income and $968,700.00 in estimated expense for the upcoming 2021 year.

The Coordinators report showed 90 calls for assistance in August with

91 patient encounters and that made a total of 675 for the year through August with 724 patient encounters for 2020.

The board retired to executive session at 7:38 pm. and then shortly returned to open session with a motion to allow the staff and two board members to negotiate with Riceland Medical Center for a proposal to accept transfer patients out of Riceland. The next regular meeting of the Winnie Stowell EMS Board of Directors will be Monday, October 19, 2020 at 7:00 pm. at the conference room of the WSEMS located at 249 Broadway in Winnie, Texas.

Chambers County Sheriff's Office Asking For Help

  Sheriff Brian Hawthorne is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying suspects involved in a theft. The theft occurred at Eagle Point Storage, located at 8724 FM 3180, Baytown, Chambers County, Texas.

Surveillance footage shows a red in color, 1998 Ford F150 Super Crew truck with distinct black rims and black door handles enter the property at approximately 2:50 a.m. on August 18, 2020.

The vehicle was occupied with two unknown suspects. The suspects cut the chain to the security gate and slid the gate open entering the property. The suspects then drove to the rear of the property to where a “Look� brand 12’ en-

closed white box utility trailer was parked. The vehicle backed up to the trailer as one of the suspects got out and physically moved the empty trailer towards the truck.

Once the trailer was attached to the truck, the vehicle left the storage facility at approximately 3:01 a.m.

At this time Chambers County Sheriff’s Office has no license plate information or suspect description other than what can be seen in the picture.

Girls Varsity Volleyball Beats Newton

Bob Tallman Named 2020 Legend of ProRodeo Recipient

  ProRodeo Hall of Fame announcer Bob Tallman has been named the 2020 Legend of ProRodeo.

Tallman will be honored at the Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala on Nov. 30 at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. “I’ve been the host of the Legend of ProRodeo event three or four times, and I asked (ProRodeo Hall of Fame director) Kent Sturman, ‘Is (contd on page 5) there somebody older than me who might not be in good health that is more deserving?’� Tallman said. “I have been so over awarded in 50 years, and in one week I got the call to work the (2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo), then I passed my real estate test and then I got a call from Kent Sturman. It was a Triple Crown week. “I’m going to give the credit to the selection committees. I’m going to give the credit to the Lord. As long as I can be humble enough to accept by those who chose this and I can be an example

for others who will receive it (Legend of ProRodeo) in the future and that I can walk the walk and talk the talk and set the example in receiving it for the younger people coming up in the world, I accept it.�

During a career that has spanned more than five decades, Tallman has announced more than 15,000 rodeo performances in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Tallman’s gravel-laced baritone and story-telling prowess are legendary in ProRodeo. In 2020, Tallman will work his record 26th NFR at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Dec. 3-12. Tallman was named the 2019 PRCA Announcer of the Year for the 10th time and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2004. “When you think of legends in professional rodeo, Bob Tallman has to come to mind,� Sturman said. “He is one of the best rodeo announcers of all time. He is a wealth of information

and stories. He has seen it all in our sport and has worked tirelessly to inform the fans, give back to our industry and help to make the sport better than when he started. He was an obvious choice for the 2020 Legend of ProRodeo.�

Born Oct. 25, 1947, in Winnemucca, Nev., Tallman tried his hand as a rodeo competitor, but he quickly discovered his forte was behind a microphone, as evidenced by his first PRCA Announcer of the Year Award in 1982.

Tallman’s career began in Fallon, Nev., when he told a rodeo producer he thought he could do a better job than the announcer was doing.

The producer told him to give it a try. Tallman earned $100 for that first job and has never looked back. “This (Legend of ProRodeo honor) was never on my radar,� Tallman said. “Any time you try in life to set yourself up for things like this, God doesn’t like that. It’s co-mingling the truth and

honesty with something that’s going to bite you. I didn’t have a clue about this award. I want to give everyone else within the vicinity of that reception hope that they would be able to be standing in that same spotlight. “The toughest part of accepting an award this prestigious is to walk away from there gracefully and let people want to walk in your path with them.�

Tallman is the 15th man to be honored as a Legend of ProRodeo, following Jake Barnes, Jim Shoulders, Clem McSpadden, Harry Vold, Larry Mahan, Shawn Davis, Dean Oliver, Donnie Gay, Benny Binion, Mel Potter, Neal Gay, Michael Gaughan, Keith Martin and Cotton Rosser.

The Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala will include a reception at 6 p.m. (CT), followed by a 7 p.m. dinner with live auction and program.

Entertainment will be provided by musical artist Paul Bogart.

by Wade Thibodeaux We can kinda talk about politics again this week.

President Trump and I have something in common. We both have had Covid-19. A while back, I put a good friend and his wife in an ambulance and as I closed the door on the ambulance, the thought crossed my mind that I may never see them again. Once they were inside a hospital, it would be almost impossible to get a chance to see them due to the fact that the hospitals are all locked down and not allowing visitors. I was wearing a mask and I completely sanitized after I left the property, but I had their keys in my hand and I was locking and unlocking doors, I went to retrieve her purse for her to bring with her to the hospital for insurance cards,

etc, and I handled their bag that contained cell phone chargers and other needed items. In other words, I was all around the opportunity to catch the little virus.

About a week later, I started getting symptoms of the Covid variety. I never had the traditional symptoms like high fever and a wicked cough, but I did have a low grade fever(around 100 degrees) and I was exhausted. I spent five days pretty much in bed and it was a chore to go from the bedroom to the bathroom. I finally decided to try to find enough energy to take a shower after three days and I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to spend enough time standing in the shower to rinse the soap off of me, but I made it

and was able to stumble back to bed. I never really struggled to breath, but I just didn’t have any energy and I felt like I had been run over by a Mack Truck. I was taking a regimen of medicine as prescribed by my doctor and for a little while I wasn’t sure if the medicine was working, or if it was side effects from the medication and after visiting with him, I decided to skip a day......

Yep, it was working and I got right back onto the medicine and after about 5 or 6 days, my condition started to improve.

As I’m writing this column, I’ve been about a week of no Covid symptoms and I feel like I have won the battle, but I know that I’m not at 100% and after talking to other folks who have had the virus, they tell me that it takes months to fully recover. So, if you see me stopping to catch my breath after walking for a good distance, just know that I’ll be alright, I just need a little extra time and oxygen to get to where I’m going. That

little virus is a wicked little bug and can inflict some serious damage. I would do the exact same thing again for a friend, but next time I might just pour a gallon of sanitizer over my head when I’m done instead of just rubbing a little around on my hands, arms and face.

be fine, and everything worked out this time.

That has not always been the case as we all know friends, family, and others who have succumbed to this virus. I’m firmly convinced that we are all going to catch this bug before it’s over with, but maybe we will have a vaccine before too long and that will help.

So, remember to wash your hands, sanitize, wear a mask, and social distance......all of those things are not foolproof, but everything helps and whatever you can do to stay away from this little critter is worth it because I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. THE MAYOR BUILT FIRE TRUCKS

David Abernathy is the mayor of Pittsburg, Texas. His father held the same position for 52 years.

“I made a campaign promise I wouldn’t stay here 52 years,” says David.

He started serving his city at an early age. “ I was working at the fire station by myself when I was 16. You could get a driver license back then at 14.”

He became a Justice of the Peace when he was in college.

“I became the youngest JP in the state at the time. I was still going to college and coming in and holding court.

After that I was starving to death so I got into the newspaper business for about a year.”

Then he joined the Forest Service.

“I was with the Texas Forest Service 34 years.

Whether it’s a hurricane or wildfire we had that under our bailiwick and then also I did training and supervised providing assistance to

all the fire departments in East Texas. A lot of people don’t realize it but Texas has as large a forested area as any other southern state that’s entirely forested.

We’ve got roughly 52 million aces of forested land in Texas. It’s a great agricultural commodity that comes out of East Texas in timber value.”

David and his dad built fire trucks.

“We built 8 fire trucks together and gave them to the community. We literally built them from the frame up. These are fully functional fire tracks. He built 2 others besides the 8 others that he and I built “ His father was a mechanical engineer.

“My father was such a perfectionist. When I was a senior in high school we built a fire truck together. Every screw slot on that truck is straight up and down. There’s not a screw that’s turned perpendicular. They’re all straight up and down.

It serves no purpose.

It’s just because we could. That fire truck that he and I built when I was in high school is in service today.”

David says Pittsburg has a lot going for it.

Downtown is healthy.

The area produces poultry and hay and has some beautiful mansions built in the late 1890’s. Carroll Shelby, the Ford Mustang man, grew up in Pittsburg.

The city is the hotlinks capital of the state and it has the Ezekiel Airship.

“It crashed on the way to the St. Louis World’s Fair but the state recognizes it as flying one year before the Wright Brothers flew their plane at Kitty Hawk. They just had all the documentation and this one didn’t.”

Fifteen individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, September 27 and Saturday, October 3.

Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Buildings to be Lit up in Blue at 13 Texas A&M University System Campuses for World Teachers’ Day Blue lights will shine bright on Texas A&M University System campuses across Texas on Monday in recognition of World Teachers’ Day. The 11 universities in the A&M System, the RELLIS Campus in Bryan and the Texas A&M Health Sciences Center Dallas campus will illuminate a total of 30 iconic buildings and landmarks.

“We want to celebrate World Teachers’ Day in a big way all across Texas this year,” said Elaine Mendoza, Chairman of the Texas A&M System Board of Regents.

“2020 has taught us all to better appreciate the importance of those who choose to spend their lives teaching others.”

World Teachers’ Day was conceived by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 1994.

The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements and draw attention to the voices of teachers who are at the heart of efforts to attain

the global education target of leaving no one behind.

“We teach Texas, and we are proud of it,” Mendoza said. “The Texas A&M University System is proud to graduate more fullycertified teachers than any public university system in Texas.”

Graduates from education colleges at Texas A&M University System campuses are highly sought-after because they are so well prepared, said Chancellor John Sharp.

“From Day One, our teacher candidates are working with students and getting the tools they need so they are ready for the classroom,” Chancellor Sharp said.

“We give them the tools they need to make the world a better place, one child at a time.”

The theme for this year’s World Teachers’ Day is “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.” All 11 universities in the Texas A&M System will, via social media and other online efforts, be encouraging their

communities to consider the contributions teachers have made to provide remote learning, support vulnerable populations, re-open schools and ensure learning gaps are mitigated.

For the fifth consecutive year, Whataburger and the Houston Texans are teaming up to raise money for the Houston Food Bank to fight hunger and provide support for local school programs, as more households are struggling with food insecurity

during the pandemic.

From Monday, October 5 at 3 p.m. through Monday, October 26 at 3 p.m., customers who donate $1 or more to the Houston Food Bank at any of the 146 Whataburger locations across Houston will receive a thank-

you coupon for a free Whataburger with purchase of a medium fry and 32-ounce drink.

“In Houston Food Bank’s 18-county service area, 1.1 million people were considered food-insecure before the pandemic, including one in four

children,” says Brian Greene, president/CEO of Houston Food Bank.

“Since the pandemic began, we’ve doubled our distribution to keep up with the major increase in need, and we couldn’t do it without the support of wonderful partners like

Whataburger will serve a free, hot breakfast to volunteers to show thanks for their service to the community.

"All Day Jesus Prayer"

We met Jim and Colleen from Illinois while on vacation in South Dakota. As we were about to part ways, I had a short prayer with the four of us. Later Dana and I were having lunch when I heard a familiar voice behind me. It was Jim! His motorcycle had broken down. He came inside looking for help and saw us. He was able to get it running then said to me, “I don’t need a little prayer for the moment. I need and all day Jesus prayer!”

I think the most disturbing thing for me right now, is seeing how many people are losing family, friends, and more..... over political beliefs.

If it wasn’t so sad, it would be almost comical. Because our society is condemning one another based on the information given being presumed correct. On both sides.

You read that right....

PRESUMED. Here is the thing, every single politician

makes promises. All of them. No new taxes, reversing policies, changing the world.... and more.

But yet, we argue over allegations. Did they pay taxes? How much? We see the “facts” supposedly.

We judge based on those “facts”, and it rolls down hill.

Bottom line, we see what all of them want us to see. On both sides.

For every single “fact” reported, I promise you the opposing side has “explained” the “facts”.... because not all was known.... about the “facts”.

That’s the scary part.

This isn’t a new issue.

The world has been hidden from the truth of political figures for decades. It goes back to how much does the

media have the right to know, and therefore report.

But now, we are severing ties, with those we love, over the facts that could be rebuked before the printing press stops.

Why? Someone is not evil if they choose to support the opposing candidate. They are no more evil, than you are if you judge. They are not baby killers if they vote differently than you. They are not radical supremacists if they vote differently than you. Stop the hate people.

What every person is, is trying to make the best choice for their particular thoughts, based on half truths, shared by the masses, and spun by the insanity of social

media. We are living in a world where people are basing their political beliefs based on memes, and what Bubbas next door neighbors cousin told them.

Happy Sunday peeps.... remember this, we heard no new taxes.... and were taxed. We heard you can keep your doctor..... and you couldn’t. You are being told what they want you to hear, to get your vote. Do your research. Vote along with what you personally believe.... and know this, realistically if 1/16 of what you are promised before Novermber 3, actually happens..... that candidate will go down as a raging success.

Despite keeping my grandfather’s .30-30 Winchester Trappers Model rifle leaning by the door into the garage, he didn’t hunt.

Fortunately for me, a hunting/fishing buddy of my grandfather’s asked my mother if I’d like to go up to his primitive camp on Beech Creek, west of Silsbee, at the edge of the Big Thicket.

Thankfully, she said, “YES!” I was nine, and my life changed that weekend.

Our jaunts up to his backwoods ”camp” deep in The Thicket created precious memories. I still “go there” on sleepless nights – watching the bottle cork he attached to the line on my bamboo fishing pole for

a bobber bounce while an unseen fish attacked my bait. “Uncle Josh”, as I called him, taught me how to set a line for catfish at night, how to call hogs, how to “knock a can of blackeyed peas in the head” for supper, that when the wash bucket was empty, it was my chore to trudge down to the creek to fill it (and trudge back uphill).

He also introduced me to bathing naked in that creek (although I worried about turtles).

He warned me, too, about the mysterious “wampus cats” that stalked the woods at night. I laid in bed in

the dark listening to the sounds of the forest, wondering if the cats were what made the night sounds. And sometimes shivered.

He taught me how to perch-fish, shoot a .22 rifle and a 16-gauge shotgun, hunt squirrels, about tick bites and showed me how he cooked cabrito in his big brick pit. He didn’t have to teach me fascination for his Winchester .32-20 rifle; that came naturally. But I never got to shoot it.

He was a gentleman and a gentle mentor.

I can still see him in his khaki pants and

undershirt, leaning over the pit, wearing his trademark fedora.

I loved him. And appreciate all he did for me.

Many kids don’t have an “Uncle Josh” to show them the woods.

Look around. As deer season nears, perhaps there’s someone in your family or neighborhood you could help.

You’d be doing the planet a favor by introducing them to the world off the pavement. And you may be the only one who will.

LEGAL NOTICE Entergy Texas, Inc. hereby publishes NOTICE that, pursuant to Section 36.203 of the Public Utility Regulatory Act (codified in TEX. UTIL. CODE) and 16 Tex. Admin. Code § 25.235(b), it filed with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (the “Commission”) on August 19, 2020, a tariff to implement a revised fixed fuel factor. All of Entergy Texas’ retail customers whose fuel charges are calculated under the Texas fixed fuel factor tariff – including but not limited to Residential, Small General Service, Large General Service, Large Industrial Power Service, and Street and Outdoor Lighting Service – will be affected by the Commission’s approval of the revised fixed fuel factor. The revised fixed fuel factor, if approved, will affect only the fuel portion

of the rates charged by Entergy Texas and will have no effect on nonfuel base rates.

Entergy Texas seeks Commission approval to revise the fixed fuel factor effective with the first billing cycle of the September 2020 billing month.

Entergy Texas proposed that the fixed fuel factor be changed pursuant to a semi-annual filing to be made each February and August, with revised fuel factors to be effective with the first billing cycle of the March and September billing months, pursuant to a methodology that changes the fuel factor based upon changes in the published price of natural gas. This methodology was authorized for use in Docket No. 32915.

The revised fixed fuel factor, differentiated by voltage level, is as follows:

The revised fuel factor would result in an increase in Entergy Texas’ annual Texas retail fuel and purchased power revenues by approximately $126.5 million, or 28.4% on an annual basis.

Compared to the fixed fuel factor approved by the Commission effective March 2020, a residential customer using 1000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month would see an approximate increase of 29.09% annually, or $6.64 on average per month, on his/ her electric bill. The fixed fuel factor rate is designed to pass through to customers the actual fuel costs incurred by Entergy Texas to serve customers.

Entergy Texas is not allowed to make a profit on fuel costs. Amounts collected from affected customers pursuant to the revised fixed fuel factor will be subject to final review by the Commission in Entergy Texas’ next applicable fuel reconciliation proceeding before the Commission. Entergy Texas expects the revised fixed fuel factor to be in effect for the billing period of September 2020 through February 2021.
