By Wade Thibodeaux The Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting and a public hearing on the proposed 2021-2022 tax rate last Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 9:00 am. in the District's office located at 2500 State Highway 124 in Stowell, Texas. The District ultimately adopted a tax rate of $0.39677 per $100.00 of valuation and adopted budgets of $3,792,125.00 in expenses for the general fund(Drainage) and $5,762,253.00 in expenses for the water and sewer fund. The general fund had

a surplus of $166,887.00 in projected revenue over projected expenses and the water and sewer fund had a $101,753.00 shortfall in projected revenue over projected expenses. Much of the remaining parts of the agenda were tabled as only three directors were present with Board President Scott Kahla and Director Greg Turner absent from the meeting.

The group was able to approve the renewal of the current audit company for the annual audit and voted Director Les Hankamer as the Board Secretary. Many (contd on page 4)

By Wade Thibodeaux The East Chambers Buccaneers scored early and then literally hung on to win last Friday night's non district competition against the Lumberton Raiders 23-21. The Bucs scored 13 in the first quarter while holding Lumberton to a single score and lead 13-7 at the end of the first. EC added another 10 points in the second half

while holding the Raiders scoreless to take a 23-7 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. That was all of the scoring for the Bucs that night and then Lumberton inched closer with a score in the third to make it 23-14 and then another Raider score in the fourth to tighten the gap to 23-21. East Chambers was driving the ball with about 4 minutes to go in the final

frame and were down to Lumberton's 17 yard line when a pass was picked off by the Raiders. Lumberton was moving the ball in the final minutes and were about at midfield when the East Chambers defense made a stop on fourth down with only about a minute to go in the game and the Raiders turned the ball over on downs and that ended the Raiders

chances. The Bucs simply ran out the clock for the 23-21 victory.

The Bucs had 340 yards of rushing and 40 yards passing but gave up 39 yards on sacks and bad snaps to total 341 yards on the night. Hayden Reeves(#6) did the heavy lifting in the rushing department as he had 137 yards on 17 (contd on page 8)

by Wade Thibodeaux I had a friend tell me this week that she doesn’t know how I get all of the things done that I write about in this column. Well, I guess that I do get a lot of things done, but there are a whole bunch of things that don’t get done that I don’t write about. I guess that would be considered selective writing or selective doing, however you would want to look at it. I was just telling Wyatt(my son) today that there were a whole lot of things that I needed to get done and it would be nice to have his help on most of these projects. For instance, I have a cattle trailer that I really need to be able to use to take some calves to the auction barn, but it’s been at the school ag barn for a while waiting to have some major work done to it in order to be roadworthy and the problem is not the ag folks, but instead I just can’t seem to remember to go and visit with the teacher at the right time. I usually think

about the trailer about midnight the night before I need to use the thing and at that point, it’s a little late. After I’ve begged and borrowed somebody else’s trailer, I forget about visiting with the ag teacher until the night before the next time I need to use my trailer. I have a flatbed gooseneck equipment trailer that I have owned for many years and I could certainly use that trailer to haul equipment around the countryside. That trailer needs a new floor as the wood that’s on it has surely rotted to the point of not being safe to load a tractor and while we have all of the wood off of it, we may as well give it a good coat of paint on the metal parts. Problem is the trailer is completely loaded with sheet metal that I acquired several years ago and used part of the metal to reskin the metal on the walls of my shop....partially.......another project that needs to be completed. I could take the sheet metal

Opinion & Entertainment off of the flatbed and put it onto another trailer except that the second trailer is now loaded with cedar posts that I picked up on a recent trip to the hill country. I’m going to build a fence with those posts and then I’ll be able to move the sheet metal over to the other trailer so that I can repaint and refloor the flatbed......yeah right........I’ll get around to that next week.

I have a truck that needs a new engine. Not that I’m going to do the mechanic work myself, but I can’t seem to find the time to go and look at wrecked trucks that may have the right engine in them so that I could replace my engine. I need to put a new set of struts on my truck and I’ve had the parts in my shop for a couple of months and a friend is scheduled to do the work, but I can’t seem to find enough time to shut my truck down so that he could have it for a day to go through the front end of my truck. I guess that I could rent a car for a day or two while he works on my truck, but that seems like a waste of money and I hate to transfer all of my stuff from one vehicle to another, so I just keep wearing on those front tires. I have bales of hay scattered throughout the pasture that

need to be gathered and stacked, but the time and the troubles with the tractor that we talked about last time are keeping me from getting that little task accomplished. I have a leak in my shower at the house that needs some attention and it’s a tile shower so when I tear into that I’m going to be without a shower for a few days while the repairs are made and the grout dries in the tile. I’ll need to schedule some alone time because I’m sure you folks don’t want to be around me when I haven’t had a shower for a while. That’s only the big ticket items that need to be done......the grass still needs moving.....in the yard and at

the cow pasture, the house needs painting, the house needs cleaning on a regular basis, and of course I probably have about five baskets of laundry that needs to be folded and put in its proper place. I just can’t seem to catch up on laundry and have come to refer to the piles of clean clothes in baskets on the floor of my bedroom as my portable dresser.

All of this stuff could be accomplished if I would just hire some people to help me, but that costs money and with the exception of the engine replacement, I can pretty much do everything myself. I hate to pay somebody to do something

that I can do myself and if I do it and it’s not right......I have nobody to blame but myself. One of these days I’m going to catch up on all of this stuff and then I’ll be able to use that pontoon boat that I purchased this Spring that I’ve never put in the water because I need to tune up the engine. A friend of mine said that he was going to work until Noon on the day that they buried him and I’m starting to believe that I had better schedule a late evening funeral because I may need the better part of the day to catch up on a few things that I haven’t quite got around to doing. FAREWELL TO SUMMER

It is the fun time of year.

I hear the howl of locusts on a scorching afternoon. The Monarch butterflies wiggle in their sunlight flight. Pure white clouds slowly float across a royal blue sky. Birds sing their lilting arpeggios.

A distant lawnmower roars.

Children’s laughter floats in the air. It’s summer.

I was born in a summer month. I was married in the summer. Our first son was born in the summer.

I started my business in the summer. Good things happen in the summer.

It’s my favorite season.

It’s a time to relax, enjoy the flowers and the rich dark green of well-kept lawns and trees. It’s when you think about things you don’t think about during other seasons. It’s baseball and vacations and seeing the ordinary in a different light. It is a time when you get perspective on your life.

You contemplate the future.

It is a time when trees, plants, bushes and vines bring forth delicious fruit.

I’ve always made a trip to East Texas during summer months. That’s when the berries, plums, peaches

apricots and grapes are at their peak. A few years ago I was interviewed on a radio station in Crockett and mentioned that I loved wild berries, grapes and plums. When I got off the air, I learned that a listener had brought me a sackful of freshly picked plums. I ate every single one of them.

My neighbors have a grapevine that produces the sweetest purple grapes I’ve ever tasted. I check the progress of the vine during late spring, anticipating the time when I can stand there and graze. I start sampling the grapes just before they turn purple so I can taste the ripening.

And is there anything better than a newly ripened peach that’s just been snatched off the tree? The simple act of reaching up and pulling down a perfect peach, rubbing it between your hands and eating it right then is one of life’s greatest thrills. The juice runs down your face and arms and you’re transformed into a six-year old licking the streams of juice heading for your elbows.

Few things are better than that.

I have a friend who picks

fresh blackberries from a field near his home and puts them over his cereal on summer mornings.

That’s really living.

Near a spring in our town there is a mulberry tree that produces an amazing dark fruit. We discovered it on a summer afternoon with our young son years ago. When I see that tree now, I recall that pleasant day made better by the discovery of the sweet tasting fruit, which was there for the taking. Blueberries have become a popular Texas fruit. Blueberry farms give customers the chance to pick their own. Some people like the cultivated fields for picking. I prefer open fields or woods that offer the fruits of the season in the wild, like the Indians found them. Burl Ives said in one of his movies: “O, the sweet tastes and joys of this world.” I repeat that line often in the summer www.tumbleweesmith.com

Twenty individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, September 12 and Saturday, September 18 . Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Adopt-A-Beach Coastwide Cleanup Volunteers from all over Texas participated in the Adopt-A-Beach 2021 Coastwide Fall Cleanup that took place this past weekend on Saturday September 18. The 3,559 volunteers worked together to clean 19 locations along the Texas coast, collecting a total of 58,671 pounds of trash.

"Less than a week after Hurricane Nicholas made landfall, Texans from all corners of the state joined together to help keep

our beaches clean," said Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush. "This collaboration between the GLO, Adopt-A-Beach sponsors, and the public shows Texans’ strong commitment to ensuring our beaches remain enjoyable for families and sustainable for wildlife.

I thank all who took part in this past weekend’s cleanup and look forward to the future successes of our Adopt-A-Beach program."

The next coastwide cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Volunteers can find more information at www.texasadoptabeach. org and are encouraged to take part in a fun-filled day of giving back and taking care of the Texas coast.

The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach program began in the fall of 1986, when 2,800 volunteers picked up 124 tons of trash. Since then, more than half a million

volunteers have removed over 9,761 tons of trash from Texas beaches.

Texans who are not able to attend the cleanup can help keep our beaches clean by making a tax-deductible donation online at www.

Last weekend as I cooked breakfast, I had an element arc and go out in my oven.

What struck me then was I did not even panic, I didn’t even jump, I turned the oven off, kept scrambling eggs, and decided toast would be fine since clearly baking biscuits wasn’t happening.

Later I looked up the type and ordered the part. Joked with my brother about, does that package come water proof as we had a

tropical something or other headed our way.

Monday I got off work, picked up mom and headed to a hotel in town, because I’m not going through watching rising water again, and well….

They said Nicholas was coming with 6-10” and “in some areas upwards of 25” is not impossible”….. nope. I made reservations and invested in my mental health.

Tuesday we wake, storm had begun moving, timed it well, loaded mom between storms, and came back home. All in time to make a board meeting at DD6. Thanks to Nicholas for a unscheduled day off allowing me to do what I had wanted.

Some weeks are just crazy.

We get caught up in our own personal craziness, and we lose focus on bigger pictures.

Thursday night one of my best friends called to tell

me her cousin was sick….. not covid, bad reaction to first round treatment of chemo. They had taken her to the hospital. We continued discussing what had happened, you see when you have been friends with people 40 years, well….. you know their family well. You are intertwined.

Friday proceeded, and I received a call that afternoon from best friend, her cousin had passed.

Y’all. 56 years old. Fairly certain I speak for anyone who knew this bright light, all of us are stunned.

On Saturday, I repaired said oven. I did laundry. I took mom and we got haircuts, groceries, lunch, met with a contractor about some changes in my home, made a pot of chili and tested the oven with a small batch of cookies.

What did I not do?

God that let me see another day. That let me comfort a friend on the phone, who is still trying to process the rapid loss of a close family member. That gave me the ability to fix something so damn trivial as a oven.

Happy Sunday peeps…… every single person I know has suffered loss lately.

Parents, spouses, children, grandparents, friends. It’s not just one. It’s certainly not because we all knew a vibrant 56 year old taken way too fast, but because Covid and other things are making us realize our mortality. Or it should be.

If you do nothing else this week, please stop arguing about nonsense long enough to express love and concern, to someone you know who is hurting. Stop demeaning one another, and start lifting one another.

This world is hurting, stop adding to the pain. Please.

Record Season Continues for Stetson Wright What a season it has been for reigning PRCA World Champion Stetson Wright.

Earlier this week, he made ProRodeo history by becoming the winningest regular-season all-around money earner before the National Finals Rodeo with $282,722 earned in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. The record was previously held by rodeo legend Trevor Brazile.

Wright one upped Brazile again over the weekend.

He took home three titles at the Pendleton RoundUp, winning the saddle bronc riding, bull riding and all-around honors.

The windfall totaled $22,476, which broke Brazile’s Pendleton record of $20,205 that was set in 2012. Wright also became the first cowboy since Lewis Feild in 1989 to win three events. Feild won bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and the allaround.

Wright said there’s nothing quite like Pendleton.

“Excitement, adrenaline, everything you can think of I’m feeling right now,” said Wright, the 2020 PRCA Bull Riding and AllAround World Champion.

“This rodeo has treated me so good this year, I can’t wait to come back. I’ve had the time of my life here this week.”

Pendleton Round-Up titles by winning the finals with a 91.5-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell in the saddle bronc riding and an eight-second cover in the bull riding good for 89 points on Four Star Rodeo’s Royal Playboy “Everything that is clicking right now in the bull riding and the bronc riding it comes from my mom, my dad, my brothers and my travel partner Ky Hamilton,” Wright said.

“They’ve really helped me out in both events. I give all the success that I’ve had this year to those guys, they’ve kept me going, they’ve kept me positive.

“All I have to do is look to my left or look to my right, there’s always someone there in my family, and I guess that’s an advantage I have over a lot of guys. I have a lot of support and a lot of smart support when it comes to rodeo.”

He will look to end his season on a high note next week at the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Salinas, Calif., Sept 23-26 as he looks for his second Tour championship.

“Shoot, I’m just going to do my job, that’s all I can do,” Wright said. “I feel like if I stay on and ride good then I did my part, everything else is left up to everybody else.”

You bet! This could be a year to remember. And one for outdoor writers to fill columns talking about!

It didn’t feel that way in mid-February. TPWD biologists, though, expect

an increase in whitetail deer populations from last year. After the freezing weather, which retarded the usual spring greenup, it started raining.

“The late spring and summer rainfall acted like liquid fertilizer for forbs,

grasses, and woody plants,” said Alan Cain, TPWD Whitetailed Deer Program Leader. “(It) has provided a buffet of natural forages for deer.”

Cain consequently predicts deer will enter fall and winter fat and healthy. The timing of the rains should have helped bucks maximize antlers as they finish out the growing season. He expects antler quality to be well above last season’s. It closes 11/ 5 in most counties the day before the General Season opens, but archery equipment can still be used during the Regular Season, along with all legal firearms (except rimfire arms for deer, fully automatic firearms, and nothing but shotguns for migratory birds).

During this special ARCHERY-ONLY SEASON, only lawful Archery equipment may be used.

That is defined as restricted to compound bows, crossbows, longbows, and recurved bows.

NO Firearms! That doesn’t mean you can use archery equipment during the muzzle-loading only season, though, nor muzzle-loaders during Archery-Only. Most hunters understand this, but I had to say it.

If readers decides to

take advantage of the Archery-Only-Season, but have never shot archery equipment, I urge them to get an experienced archer to help them get started. And then practice every spare minute before hunting! Some facilities – like Austin’s Archery Country -have indoor ranges.

The fact that seasoned and dedicated bowhunters, like Round Rock’s Alan McGraw, can make a clean bowkill on grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, and numerous other animals doesn’t mean it’s easy. McGraw practices continually. He also understands when to pass up a shot that might only injure his quarry. Some inexperienced bowhunters have also had serious accidents. Don’t bowhunt unless you know your equipment.

Once you do, the rewarding challenge afield awaits you.

LEGAL NOTICE On September 16, 2021, Entergy Texas, Inc. (“ETI”) filed an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (“Commission”) requesting approval of an amendment to ETI’s Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (“CCN”) permitting ETI to construct a combinedcycle combustion turbine generating unit with a summer rating of 1,158 megawatts at ETI’s existing Sabine facility, which is located near Bridge City, Texas in Orange County.

The new unit would be known as Orange County Advanced Power Station or “OCAPS.” As part of its long-term electric supply resource plan, ETI has determined that it needs additional generating resources in the near future.

The docket number and style of the application are PUC Docket No. 52487, Application of Entergy Texas, Inc. to Amend its Certificate of Convenience and Necessity to Construct Orange County Advanced Power Station. ETI is not seeking to change its rates in this proceeding.

The proposed project would be constructed at ETI’s existing Sabine facility which is located approximately 1.4 miles northwest of Texas State Highway 87 near Bridge City, Texas. The following municipalities are within five miles of the project site: Bridge City, Orange, Port Neches, Nederland, Groves, and Port Arthur. A map showing the location of OCAPS may be viewed at ETI’s offices at 350 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas 77701, and is included with notices published in newspapers of general circulation in ETI’s service

The total estimated cost, based on a mid-2026 commercial operation date, is $1.19 billion, inclusive of estimated costs of transmission upgrades, contingency, an allowance for funds used during construction, and expenses related to seeking Commission certification.

The deadline for intervention in this proceeding is November 1, 2021, and a letter requesting intervention should be received by the Commission by that date.
