Winnie Stowell EMS Gets New Ambulance By Wade Thibodeaux   The Winnie Stowell EMS just recently took possession of a new ambulance. The Ford F-450 is a larger chassis than the normal F-350 and consequently it can hold a larger "box" or medical unit than the normal unit can hold. This allows for more room for patients and medics as they go about taking care of

people that find themselves in a predicament that requires medical assistance. The new box is a full two feet longer and the new chassis is better able to handle the weight and wind resistance of the larger box. Pictured with the new unit is left to right Clint Aslin, Carolyn Hurych, Steven Hilton, and EMS Director Robert Falls.

Chambers County Commissioners Have Emergency Meeting By Wade Thibodeaux   The Chambers County Commissioners Court held an emergency called meeting last Thursday, August 26, 2021 with one item on the agenda. The agenda item was to consult with an attorney regarding legal issues pertaining to the closure of all Chambers County Tax Office locations. It seems that Chambers County Tax Assessor-Collector Denise Hutter was involved in a dispute with the Court over budget issues and arbitrarily decided to order all of her employees(County employees) to close all of the tax offices County wide until further notice on Wednesday afternoon of the 25th of August. Those offices remained closed all day Thursday, August 26, 2021 until they were reopened on Friday, August 27, 2021 at

8:00 am. The Court opened the meeting and then went immediately into executive session where they remained for over an hour before emerging to table the agenda item. Tabling an agenda item versus no action on an agenda item means that the agenda item will continue to be on a succeeding agenda until action is taken. Had the Court taken no action on the item, it would have simply gone away unless a Commissioner requested that it be placed back on the agenda. Regardless of the action taken by the Court, the Tax Assessor-Collector offices were open for business on Friday morning for County residents to handle tax and automobile registration issues and have remained open for regular business hours.

By Wade Thibodeaux  The Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors have certainly been busy as they prepare the budget and tax rate for the coming years. The board had a regular meeting on August 18, 2021 in which they approved a preliminary tax rate of $0.41837 per $100. of valuation, but then at the end of the meeting it was pointed out that there seemed to be a discrepancy in the math on the calculation of the homestead exemption which could cause a change in the tax rate. TBCD's General Manager James Gibson advised that he would check into the matter and sure enough there was a mathematical mistake on the worksheet generated by the Chambers County Tax Assessor-Collectors office that caused another meeting to take place on Monday,

August 30, 2021. At that meeting, the board voted to approve the preliminary tax rate at $0.39677 per $100. of valuation, after a new worksheet was produced by the Tax Assessor's office and that resulted in a tax rate savings of over $0.02 per $100. of valuation. The board will hold yet another meeting on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 in which they will accept public input on the new preliminary tax rate. Then, at the regularly scheduled meeting of Wednesday, September 15, 2021, the board will hold a public hearing before officially adopting the tax rate for the coming year. The board also approved preliminary budgets at the August 18 meeting for the general fund(drainage) of $3,792,125.00 (contd on page 3)

Bucs Struggle in First Game of Season

Darius Green(#11) struggles for a few yards after making a catch during last Thursday's game.

By Wade Thibodeaux   The East Chambers Buccaneers traveled to Jasper to take on the West Rusk Raiders last Thursday evening and EC struggled the entire game. The Raiders won the toss, but deferred and kicked off to the Bucs. Three and out and then the Raiders got the ball and marched down the field and scored to take a 7-0 lead. East Chambers responded with a score of their own to tie the game at 7-7, but that was as

close as they would get with West Rusk adding another score in the first quarter to lead 14-7 after one. The second quarter absolutely imploded on the Bucs as costly mistakes began to pile up and the Raiders took advantage of those miscues. A field goal by the Raiders and then a touchdown and then another touchdown from a turnover and the game was pretty much out of reach at 31-7 in favor of the Raiders at

the halftime break. West Rusk added another score in the third to lead 38-7 and then one last score from the Bucs to close out the game 14-38 and start the season with a loss. The Bucs only gathered 201 yards of total offense against a pretty good Raiders defense and had three lost fumbles and one interception. East Chambers did garner 147 yards rushing the ball on 22 carries for a respectable 6.68 yards

per carry, but much of that came on one long run. KK Morris(#5) provided most of the offense with 57 yards rushing on 3 carries and 4 catches for 51 yards. He scored both touchdowns for the Bucs. Defensively, the Bucs were busy as they had 73 tackles on the night with no quarterback sacks and only one recovered fumble. The defense spent most of the night on the field as West Rusk gathered up 405 total yards on 43 rushes and 19 pass attempts. The Raiders had 2 rushing TD's and 2 passing TD's with a field goal and another touchdown coming off of EC turnovers. East Chambers will next play Hardin Jefferson on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 7:30 pm. in Sour Lake. Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Ackle Memorial Rodeo Makes Debut

Trinity Bay Wrestles With Tax Rate

One of the bareback riders that made 8 seconds.

By Mackensey Bailey   The first ever Johnny Ackle Memorial CPRA Rodeo took place August 27-28 at the Winnie Arena. It was an absolute hit with the community. The stands and fence line were packed with spectators getting to watch the beloved sport of rodeo that Winnie

hasn’t seen in years. Both the livestock athletes and rodeo athletes brought their absolute best both Friday and Saturday night. With minimal injuries and majority of athletes making a qualifying time was an amazing night for the athletes and spectators. One of the crowd favorites

of the night, that made everyone laugh, was the wild cow milking. All four teams managed to wrangle up the cattle and get them milked with time to spare. Other events that were held were mutton bustin’, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, bulldogging,

breakaway roping, and team roping. Everyone that participated did amazing and plenty of contestants won their share of money. All the proceeds from the huge success that the rodeo was will be donated to the Hamshire-Fannett and East Chambers FFA.
