Fire Ravages County Owned House

By Wade Thibodeaux  Multiple agencies responded to a house fire last Friday, August 14, 2020 around 2:30 in the afternoon. The fire was in a vacant house owned

by Chambers County and was located inside of White's Park right behind the County Extension Agents office. The house had been vacant for about two weeks as the previous tenant had moved into a house that she had recently

purchased.

Chambers County Emergency Services District No. 1 and the Winnie Stowell Volunteer Fire Department as well as other departments responded to the blaze to assist the Hankamer Volunteer Fire Department extinguish the fire. The house was a total loss and the cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Chambers County Fire Marshal's office.

With temperatures bumping triple digits, ample water breaks were administered during the evening practices.

Good catches during practice make for great catches during the game. This defender was just a little late to break up this pass play.

The building adjacent to the house was lost as well as the main house.

Chambers County ESD No.1 Crews Have Been Busy

By Wade Thibodeaux  Chambers County Emergency Services District No. 1 Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 6:00 pm. in the Winnie Stowell Fire Station and via Zoom computer meeting. The agenda was very light, but Commissioners heard of the activity that the department has been receiving lately as the Chief's Report indicated 40 calls for assistance for the month of July which make a total of 238 calls

for the year. The financial report showed a net cash balance of $1,122,407.87 and the Administrators report detailed some routine maintenance of the fire trucks and equipment.

There were no public comments and the short meeting was adjourned at 6:39 pm. The next regular meeting of the Chambers County ESD No. 1 Board of Commissioners will be Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 6:00 pm. in the Fire Station located at 825 State Highway 124 in Winnie, Texas.

High Schools that are 4A and smaller will begin their season as scheduled and 5A and 6A will follow about 6 weeks later.

East Chambers will have a scrimmage against Liberty this Thursday at 6:00 pm. at Buccaneer Stadium and then the official This roll over was one of the many traffic accidents start to the season that the Fire Department has responded to during gets underway the following Friday, a busy Summer season.

contamination at the water tank and other safe keeping and sanitizing methods are also being implemented. As far as the fans go, there will be new rules for them as well. Most of these guidelines are being mandated by the State, TEA(Texas Education Agency) and UIL(University Interscholastic League).

East Chambers is still developing their precise plan of action, but some generic rules in place already indicate that capacity will be limited to

50% of the stadium seating to allow social distancing and of course masks will have to be worn. Things such as concession stand procedures and bathroom limitations(Yes, you may be limited as to the number of people in the bathroom at one time) are still being decided upon. About the only certainty at press time is that the season is slated to begin on schedule and change is likely and probable as we navigate this season.

by Wade Thibodeaux So.....when you have nothing to write about....that's what you do......you write about absolutely nothing. I need to warn everybody right up front that this week's column is going to be about absolutely nothing except maybe a little insight into this somewhat elementary and twisted mind of mine. The inspiration from this week's column comes from a trip to the Post Office. Going to the Post Office is something that a lot of people are able to accomplish on a rather routine basis and probably with not near as much fanfare and issues that I usually experience on a regular basis. Have you ever just stopped and thought about all of the procedures and steps that have to be taken before you can just get your mail on a daily basis? Now, let's just start in the parking lot of the Post Office....we are not even going to discuss all of the trials and tribulations of negotiating the traffic in order to get to the Post Office, we are just going to start in the parking lot.

We open the truck door and

take a few steps towards the building. We then remember that we forgot our mask and so we retreat to the truck and climb back inside the cab. The mask is hanging on the press pass that is draped around the mirror and so we have to be sitting in the seat in order to retrieve the mask without accidently pulling the rear view mirror off of the windshield. besides that, we have to look in the mirror after we put the mask on to make sure that it's on our face properly and not upside down as I've been known to do. Dangling the mask from the mirror is probably not the exact correct way to store the dang thing, but I figure a contaminated mask does just about as much good as a brand new hermetically sealed one and at least I can remember it most of the time if I can see it hanging in plain sight. Okay, we are properly outfitted and ready to make the trip into the Federally regulated property known to most people as the United States Postal Service.

We retrieve our mail and

visit with a few people that we are not completely sure of their identity because they are wearing masks as well, but we are polite and guard our words until we are certain of just exactly who we are talking to and then head back to the truck. We reach the truck and are just about out of breath due to the constraining reality of this dang mask and place the mail on the dash of the truck and climb inside the cab. Now, we have to take the mask off and thread the press pass through the elastic loops of the mask so that it will hang in the breeze and air out while we are driving down the road and then we can actually breath again and we turn our attention to starting the truck.

We have to lean way over to get the keys out of our pocket because our hands were full of mail and we didn't dare try to get our keys from our pocket because we didn't want to risk dropping mail all over the parking lot. We have our keys and we have to sort through all of the keys and get the right one for this truck and finally insert the key and turn the ignition and start the truck to get that much needed air that is coming from the air conditioner vents. Next we reach over and grab the seat belt and poke around on the receptacle until we hear that familiar click of the seat belt sliding into the receiving part of the restraining system.

About this time the mail that was on the dash of the truck falls to the floor because of all of the rummaging around in the truck and so we have to unbuckle the seat belt in order to reach down to the floor board and retrieve the mail.

This time we place the mail on the front passenger seat

and we repeat the process of securing the seat belt. We are now ready to put the vehicle in reverse and back out of our parking space which is another entirely risky venture to try to navigate, but we finally get backed out of the space and our trip to the Post Office is complete. This entire process

is generally repeated on a daily basis and can take anywhere from a couple of minutes up to 30 or 40 minutes based on who you run into and what conversation you embark upon. See.......I told you it was about nothing. Till next time, I'm............Wade in the Shade.

TRAVELING THE COUNTY

I love travel and all that goes with it: the planning, the frustration, the airport waits, the crowds getting on cruise ships, the anticipation, the thrill of reaching the destination and seeing the wonders of the world. I have always loved to drive and have taken some wonderful trips by motor home and car. It’s fun to see how far you can go in one day.

Once when I was a soldier in Europe we went from Kassel, Germany to Venice, Italy over an 18hour period of time. We left one Saturday morning at 6 AM and got to the Venice area at midnight.

We spent the rest of that night in Mestre, a Venice suburb. We were up at 8 AM Sunday and after breakfast we rode gondolas, took some pictures at St. Mark’s Plaza saw some fancy pieces of glass and got back in the VW Beetle at noon Sunday. In another 18 hours we were back on post by 8 AM Monday ready to report for duty.

It wasn’t a leisurely trip by any means, but while we were in Venice we were relaxed and felt like we were lucky to be in such a special place.

Shakespeare said “I could be bounded in a nutshell

and consider myself the king of infinite space.”

We felt the same about time. We had a short time to visit, but we felt like we had all the time in the world to spend in Venice.

I have traveled from Memphis to Big Spring in one stretch, did the same thing from Big Spring to Tucson. Easy trips, both of them. We aren’t doing much travel these days.

No airports, No cruise ships. No long car trips.

Every once in a while we need to get out of the house and drive somewhere.

One afternoon we drove out to Moss Creek Lake and Signal Peak. That gave us the idea to explore Howard County.

Our first trip was to Forsan, 15 miles south. Then we went to Coahoma, 8 miles east. We went north to Knott (which has an East Knott, Middle Knott and West Knott).

Then we went southwest to Elbow and Lomax.

We’re looking forward to going to Ross City and Otis Chalk, Vincent and Luther. One of the secrets of having a happy life is always having something to look forward to.

We have a new city by pass called a reliever route, intended to take big truck

traffic off our major northsouth street. We explored the new highway the other day and discovered that the reliever route adds a couple of miles, but is faster. If you’re going from Lubbock to San Angelo on Highway 87 and take the Big Spring exit and go through town, you’ll go 10 miles in 18 minutes. If you stay on 87 you’ll go 15 miles in 14 minutes. If you take it, you’ll see some virgin prairie and some small canyons. It is undeveloped country, no service stations or stores. Yet. I have no idea when we’ll take another cruise or travel across an ocean in an airplane. We do know that our first trips out of town will be to see our kids and grandkids. Our older son lives in Dallas and our younger son lives in Oakland, California. Son number one came out with his family one time this summer but we haven’t been with our California bunch in 8 months, the longest we’ve been apart. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Twenty individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Monday, August 10 and Saturday, August 15. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

"Need an Expert?"

During this COVID-19 pandemic, I was asked to video several weekly sermons for a church to put on their social media page at their regular worship time. The first sermon paused several times while streaming. My oldest son suggested I call Lisa because of her expertise with social media. Lisa told me just what needed to be done and it worked perfectly from then on!

The Lord said, “Call on Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3) Best expert I know!

Well.... school starts this week. This crazy Covid year continues marching on. But guys, these administrators and students are treading water no one ever has.

A new school year will always bring new trials, tribulations, and challenges. I simply can not fathom what is going to happen this year, and I honestly am so thankful I do not have a school age child anymore.

There are the ever changing CDC guidelines, the

President with his words, the Governors with theirs, and not a one can say “this specific thing will work”.

Oh and the guidelines will change. And change. And change. But keep your infection rate down. But we don’t know how.

Maybe I’m foolish, but I 100% believe your administration and support staff is trying their best.

They are as worried as you are. Probably more so.

You have your kids. They have their kids..... and hundreds more, that they are responsible for.

I promise you, they want normal as bad as you do.

They want nothing more than to have crazy loud pep rallies, free playground time, Friday night lights, school carnivals, and more.

But we look to them for the protection of our kids. The only way to do that, in the time of a virus, is to scale things back.

What’s going to help the

absolute most, is patience.

Grace.

Forgiveness.

Patience. Tolerance. And did I mention patience?

I promise you, the rules you start with, will change.

Many times. Then change again. You may decide face to face learning is best for your child. Or that virtual is best. Or start one way, and change. You may decide they can participate in extracurricular activities but virtually learn. You may decide you are done with all of it and home school. And all of that is ok.

What you should do, is thank your administration for offering the multiple options, and know that every single plan..... is guaranteed to change. If there was a single plan that was guaranteed to work, I promise you the staff at your child’s school would embrace it.

Every person has their different issues to deal

with when it comes to this virus. The best way for them personally. The risk to their individual loved ones. The ramifications of on average 3 weeks missed work should you contract the virus. Lost income, who else gets it from you, how to quarantine, and on and on.

Happy Sunday peeps..... please show your administration and staff some patience as we navigate yet another unknown in the world of Covid19. They simply don’t know what the one size fits all answer is, but I promise they wish they did. They have busted their humps for your kids this summer, to come up with every option out there.... then a backup plan. Say some prayers for health and safety, and have a great school year.

Joe Sullivan, 72, of beautiful downtown Winnie, Texas passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Joe was born in Hayden, Colorado on February 10, 1948 to John Francis Sullivan and Carolyn Evelyn Sullivan, and was one of four children.

Joe grew up in Meeker, Colorado where he spent his summers on the Sullivan Ranch. He and his sister Jacque would ride his Labretta to the ranch, and she helped him with his 4H calves. In high school, you could find Joe on

a wrestling mat or learning to rope. Roping brought Joe to Texas, when he packed up his truck and horse and headed to college at Sam Houston State.

He showed up at the barn with his horse and no place to live. Joe’s spontaneity often resulted in great success including meeting his future wife, Melanie, and obtaining his Bachelors in Criminal Justice.

Joe met Melanie when he sold her first pair of cowboy boots to her from Ronnie William’s Western Store. After graduation, Joe moved to Arizona to pursue a roping adventure with his brother Mike and childhood friend Jimmy Watson. Mike lived with Joe and Melanie after they were married in 1973.

In 1980, Joe and Melanie moved to Utah where both his daughters, Sarah and JoLyn, were born and where Joe worked as an auctioneer at Producers Livestock. He shared a love of flying with his brother Kelly and bought an airplane to fly his young

family back and forth between Utah and Colorado.

In 1985, the Sullivan family moved to Hamshire, Texas where Joe met up with one of his college friends, Robert Lott, and began work at Lott Materials.

He never lost his auctioneer skills and frequently volunteered his auctioneer services at the Hamshire Volunteer Fire Department Annual BBQ and fundraiser. Later, he met fellow roper Calvin Keating and went to work at Calvin Ford, where he honed his skills as a successful salesman.

Joe and family moved to Winnie, Texas in 1996 and built their forever home. It was here that Joe’s eclectic work history and skills culminated in the building and opening of Joe’s Beverage Barn. At the Barn, his love for people was evident. He never met a stranger. Most would say Joe would give the shirt off his back, and he has often been described as generous and kind. He was a

master story teller with a quick wit and infectious humor. His love of horses and roping was lifelong, and if Joe was not at the Beverage Barn or with his family, he was likely in the roping pen.

Joe took tremendous pride in his daughters’ accomplishments and would stop everything to spend time with them.

As they grew up, he did everything with them from making mud pies to teaching them to drive in a hay field. His love for children did not stop with his daughters. He welcomed many kids into his heart and friends automatically became family. He loved his nieces and nephews tremendously.

He also loved his son-inlaw, Luke, and spent many hours talking and shooting guns with him. When his granddaughter, Blair, arrived his world was complete. He was overjoyed to learn that Blair will soon have a sister, Elise, to play with.

WEST TEXAS TRAGEDY

I recently heard Larry Weishuhn, former TPWD wildlife biologist, nationally prominent hunter, and media personality, speaking on deer hunting. His excellent program is available on the www. austinwoodsandwaters. org website and on You Tube.

Three days after the program, a tragic helicopter crash occurred on the Black Gap Wildlife

Management Area (WMA), taking the lives of the State Veterinarian and two TPWD wildlife staff members. They were performing an aerial bighorn sheep survey above the rugged 107,878-acre area adjacent to Big Bend National Park.

Weishuhn, himself, went down in a helicopter crash earlier. Actually, he’s crashed 13 times.

Some caused minor damage to the chopper.

One was hauled out in pieces. Weishuhn was hospitalized after that one, suffering

severe back problems, a concussion, and cuts requiring numerous stitches to the back of his head. Some thought he was dead. He still doesn’t remember what happened.

Five friends have gone down in helicopters.

One was shot down in Nam (James Caston) and two others crashed doing aerial deer surveys (Al Brothers and Larry). The other two occurred August 8.

I didn’t know the third TPWD employee killed in that crash, Brandon White, who worked at Black Gap. The two I knew were Dr.

Bob Dittmar and Dewey Stockbridge. Dr. Bob, as everybody called him, was a veterinarian in Fredericksburg at the time we met. He later joined TPWD as the State Vet since he had vast experience with wildlife health issues.

He guided two recent bighorn hunters that I’ve written about – Nyle Maxwell and bowhunter, Alan McGraw. Both sang his praises.

Dewey told me he liked working on Elephant Mountain but preferred the Black Gap. Ironically, that’s where the crash occurred.

On my first aerial p h o t o g r a p h y assignment, I accompanied Weishuhn and our helicopter pilot over the 5,000acre Pinto Valle Ranch in Webb County. I became hooked on it and flew other ranches afterwards.

Another wildlife biologist cautioned me, saying, “Everybody goes down eventually.”

I had met Al Brothers before his crash and have hunted with him numerous times since. He was severely injured but fought back, refusing to abandon his passion for the Brush Country. He still hunts, driving his truck or four-wheeler anywhere he wants to go. And he continued performing aerial surveys for years.

Helicopters can be dangerous. But provide incomparable observations abilities.
