by Wade Thibodeaux It’s Sunday afternoon and I just had a very interesting thing happen and so I decided to sit down and write my column before I forget what happened. You know, it’s a long time from Sunday afternoon until Sunday evening and as forgetful as I am, I would probably be scratching my head trying to remember what I was going to write about. Anyway, this has to do with my special needs daughter and her abilities with an Ipad. Annie has Downs Syndrome and by most accounts is pretty high functioning, but her biggest issue is her speech.

She has a somewhat limited vocabulary, at least a vocabulary that we can understand as she rattles off a string of sentences and if we are lucky we can pick up a few words that give us some indication of the gist of her conversation. Most of the time, we can figure out what she

is saying, but on occasion, we just have no clue. On those times when we just can’t get it figured out, the conversation will end with Annie expressing very plainly “Never Mind”.

Anyway, it was Sunday afternoon and Annie and I were home alone as her brother had gone to visit his Mom and she walked into my office with her Ipad in her hand and said it was broken. Now, broken could mean anything from the battery was dead to the motherboard had completely cratured and there was no reviving the thing. I am not an Apple person and I’m not really good at computers at all, but I told her I would look at it and try to figure out what was wrong. Her brother usually takes care of these things, but he was nowhere to be found and it was up to me. After a little checking, I realized that it was not connect-

ing to the internet, but I had no clue as to how to get to the part of the program where you enter the password. I walked back into Annie’s bedroom and asked her if she could get to the page where you enter the password. She took the Ipad and began poking the touchscreen with her finger and after several very purposeful taps, she handed it back to me and said “Here”. Sure enough, there was the place to enter the password and so I took it back to my office where the password was stored and entered the 48 thousand(seemed like) characters and low and behold, it worked. I delivered it back to Annie and I haven’t heard a peep out of her since. Of course, about five minutes after I went through all of these girations, her brother walked in the door and asked how everything was going. I replied “Fine”.

Now, to the everyday person this is like, so what, she knows how to manipulate an Ipad, but to those of us who deal with this stuff all of the time......it’s a big deal. Annie can operate an Ipad and a cell phone. She taught me how to make video calls on cell phones

and she uses that function regularly.....like when I’m in a meeting. Maybe, she looks at my calendar and picks the times that I’m in meetings to call me just to let me know that she is okay. I’ll take those calls every time. In this modern ever changing electronic world that we live in, knowing how to manipulate her electronics could be a game changer for her.

In the future, or maybe even right now and we are just not aware of it, there

could possibly be some software that correlates with her brain to provide words over the Ipad speaker that voices what she is thinking(artificial intelligence). Wait a minute, that may not be a good thing because she has a wicked sense of humor and has no filter. Maybe the software can provide that filter as well. Maybe, I’m selling her short on this deal, maybe I should give her access to the passwords and she wouldn’t

even need me. I’d better keep the Amazon password hidden because there would be one of those 18 wheelers backing up to the house next week. Anyway, just an afternoon in the life of an old newspaper publisher. I may not know how many Aggies it takes to change a light bulb, but I do know that it takes one special needs child and an old guy to reset a password on an Ipad. A WORLD CLASS GARDEN NEAR DOWNTOWN COWTOWN

When the summer heat is at its peak people in Fort Worth seek refuge in the shade and beauty of the city’s Botanic Garden in Forest Park.

“We’re very well situated,” says Steve Huddleston, who served 26 years as the garden’s senior horticulturalist. “We are just west of downtown Fort Worth in an urban setting and yet we have this green space here so close to the downtown area. It’s a wonderful place for people to retreat and enjoy nature and see flowers. We’re an outdoor museum of living plants so we fit very well into the museum district, the cultural district.

We’re the green lawn of the city, so to speak.”

The garden has a significant history.

“We are the oldest public Botanic Garden in Texas.

We began in 1934. Our rose garden was the first public relief program in Fort Worth. It put a lot of men to work during the depression.”

The garden covers 110 acres and even during the pandemic attracts 200,000

visitors a year. Steve says there is so much to see and experience he recommends visitors spend at least three hours in the garden.

“We have a water conservation garden, a perennial garden, a fragrance garden.

In all we have about 25 gardens that feature different kinds of plants.”

Throughout the year, the garden has all sorts of events and educational opportunities.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra does a concert over a 3-day period.

There are formal teas in the garden and the exhibits are always changing.

Just recently there were woodpeckers, gardeners, a praying mantis and other figures made from Legos “Right now we have an exhibit called Stick Work which consists of saplings from American Elm and Rough Leaf Dogwood that were woven or fashioned into a structure that you can walk through, look through and explore.

It’s very interesting.”

Sculptures are throughout the garden and there

are several water features such as lagoons waterfalls and pools. A popular destination is the Japanese Garden.

“That’s a 7-acre garden. It has 3 large pools filled with Koi fish and is beautifully landscaped with plants native to Eastern Asia especially Japan.

We have a lot of interesting structures in there as well.

The whole environment is very authentic.”

Steve thinks a visit to the garden is extremely uplifting. ,“I love flowers. They are absolutely beautiful. Their form, their shape, their colors, their fragrance.

They make us feel good.”

A mushroom (devil’s cigar) emerged from roots of cedar elm trees in the garden. The state legislature named it the official mushroom of Texas. It opens up like a star. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Thirty-Six individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Monday, July 19 and Saturday, July 24 . Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

A husband and wife, Sonya and Red, had a Sunday School teacher who owned a hearing aid business. One day in class, Sonya asked her teacher, “Do you think you can help Red? I have to repeat everything I say to him.”

Being good friends with both of them, he looked at her and pointed to Red and said, “Sonya, I can fix it where he can hear, but I can’t make him listen.”

Psalm 116:1-2 says, “I love the LORD, because He has heard my voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.” God not only hears, but listens. Give Him a call.

it those things bring us comfort, yet we find out, really don’t mean anything to others?

Well, for me, when I look at my overstuffed chair, I see my grandfather in it. I see him with an arm above his head, a foot drawn up next to him, quietly observing the chaos of a family gathering unfolding in front of him. Other generations, didn’t notice him doing that. They didn’t see him aging in front of them. They were busy with kids, cooking, and life. Doesn’t make it wrong. It makes it what it is.

My generation, us 50-somethings, are at a point in life where loss is becoming very real.

We can’t deny our youth is somewhat gone, and that we have become the driving forces of our families. Where one day we waited on parents and grandparents to tell us what was happening, it’s now on us. We have become grandparents, the chief cooks, the ones the “kids” ask for advice. Like it or not.

So we dig through things, we simplify, we reminisce, we get on our kids nerves

sending old pictures to them. But we also realize that what we value, are sentimental about, well….. others are not. They have things that are important to them, but they are not an overstuffed chair. A tea pitcher. A table. Those are important to us.

I can’t remember ever not wanting the items my loved ones wanted to share, my grandmother said I was born an old soul and I believe it. My house filled with family treasures from years gone by show that I took anything I could get my hands on. An intervention may be needed for me with sentimentality and furniture. It simply can not all be kept. I get it. My friends get it.

But man….. it’s hard.

It’s not about a monetary value to anyone, it’s just hard to realize what was important to us, may not mean as much to others.

We take personal what we shouldn’t. We live, we learn, we grow.

The upside to all this is I have unloaded some books, to a friend who’s dad is enjoying the heck out of them. More books have gone to a nursing

home for residents there.

The animal care people have enjoyed many discarded sheets, towels, and blankets. Loved ones have been thrilled to get some other items. Pictures are always distributed, I may mail you 100, but i have strong beliefs on photos…. and life goes on.

Happy Sunday peeps….. I hope as you find yourself cleaning, organizing, and minimizing, you remember what’s important to you, and isn’t to others, that it’s ok. That it’s your memories, not theirs.

That one persons trash is another’s treasure, and to try to find good placement for items you no longer need. I hope that you feel that moment of victory I did, when I realized all my paperwork now fits on one much smaller box…. Easy to evacuate with, but that means the larger container can now go elsewhere….

And gotten rid of. One more thing, gone. Much love peeps! Find what means something to you, and enjoy the hell out of it…… regardless of whether others enjoy it.

This moment is yours.

Enjoy it all.

she spent the majority of her life there. Gladys was a loving housewife, mother, grandmother, g r e a t - g r a n d m o t h e r, and aunt. She loved quilting, fishing, and eating cornbread and watermelon. Her favorite past time was sitting on the arm of Doug's chair helping him watch the evening news and singing him silly songs. Gladys came to know the Lord in her 20's and served God with her whole heart.

She walked closely with the Lord and was quick to do his will. It was not unusual for she and Doug to drive hours to pray for someone or lead them to the Lord. Gladys read her

Bible daily until it was worn out and then would buy a new one and start over. Her dream was to be a foreign missionary, but God's plan was for her to be a witness to all those she came in contact with.

Gladys touched so many lives and won many souls for the Kingdom of God. She was a mighty woman of God and will be missed by all those that had the privileged to know her.

Gladys is survived by her son, Douglas Wayne Bouse; her granddaughters, Rachel Bouse Rutledge, and Katherine Bouse; her great-grandson William “Blythe Bouse; her daughter-in-law, Renee

Bouse Murrell; her numerous nieces and nephews; along with other loving family members.

Gladys is preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Douglas Merle Bouse; her parents, G.W. and Ella Nolan; along with her siblings.

A visitation service was held at Farmer Funeral Home from 4pm – 7pm on Sunday, July 25, 2021. Funeral service were held at 11am Monday, July 26, 2021 at Farmer Funeral Home.

A committal service was held immediately after at Franks Branch Cemetery.

EMERGENCY SPECK REDUCTIONS EXTENDED

Emergency reductions in spotted seatrout bag limits in Laguna Madre that were effective April 1- July 29 were extended last week by Parks and Wildlife (TPWD). The reductions now extend until September 27.

“The data from our Coastal Fisheries biologists clearly shows declines in spotted seatrout populations in multiple Texas bays,” said Carter Smith, TPWD Executive Director. This was caused by the devastating February freeze in Texas.

the Laguna Madre bag limit was reduced from five specks to three, at least 17-inches long, and no longer than 23-inches. Other waters are also troubled.

Carter Smith added that trout recovery is needed in San Antonio and Matagorda Bay systems, too. The TPW Commission will be updated at its regularly scheduled meeting on August 2526 in Austin. Additional recovery rules might be forthcoming.

Gill net surveys were conducted this spring.

In Laguna Madre, catch rates were 30 percent LOWER than the 10-year average. That justified the bag limit reduction, there.

In the Matagorda and San Antonio Bay systems, the catch rates were 40 percent lower than the tenyear average. That will surely be discussed.

Other bay systems, however, fared better. Aransas, Galveston, and Sabine Lake were at or near the ten-year average, and Corpus Christi Bay was 10 percent higher than the average.

The Commission will seek public input at its August meeting and will continue to evaluate the data though the fall. A quick recovery from the fish kill is the goal.

While none of this is very encouraging, at least for the immediate future of speckled trout fishing in coastal waters, there is some good news for redfish (red drum) anglers.

Three of the biggest prizes are still available. And a number of tagged redfish are hungrily swimming around looking of something to eat. Catch one, and you could be driving a new Ford F-150 pickup truck, towing a Coastline trailer upon which sits a 23’ Haynie Boat, sporting a fine Mercury motor.

Other prizes are way too numerous to mention!

If you miss out on one of these three packages, there are also five (count ‘em) boat, motor, and trailer packages remaining available – the only difference between these and the preceding ones is these five don’t include a truck. Still a heckuva reward!

The S.T.A.R. tournament is open through Labor Day weekend, September 6. Be sure and join CCA and register for the tournament BEFORE you start fishing, though. Every year, a couple of anglers catch a tagged red but hadn’t joined and registered. If I were one of them, I’d cry. The unfortunate ones probably did. Also, the trout, sheepshead, flounder, and gafftop categories are suspended due to the freeze.

The Commercial shrimping season in both state and federal waters reopened on July 15. Closed since mid-May, the recess protected brown shrimp until becoming larger and avoided waste caused by discarding smaller shrimp. This will enable anglers to follow shrimp boats while fishing.

It was business as usual for two-time PRCA World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Ryder Wright in Nampa, Idaho, over the weekend.

Wright put on a show for the crowd at the Snake River Stampede, which concluded July 24, winning the rodeo with 177 points on two head in the average. The Milford, Utah, cowboy capped off the title with an 88-point ride on the Cervi Brothers’ Mortician in the finals.

“That horse was awesome, I knew when I went in that I had a little wiggle room, but every time I nod my head I’m not riding for the average, I’m looking for go-round wins,” said Wright, 23. “I’ve watched that horse a couple of times, he jumped out there and did exactly what I thought he was going to do, then it was just up to me to do my thing.”

Wright did his thing and then some. The firstround win and the average title paid out $7,900 to the PRCA | RAM World Standings leader, adding to his already impressive season as he looks to repeat as world champion in Las Vegas in December.

“I’m feeling really good, I’m riding good, everything seems to be working out for me right now,” Wright said. “I’m going to try and keep the ball rolling for as long as I can.”

He hopes that success will roll right into the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas but says he won’t let the situation become bigger than it actually is.

“I just try to keep it simple and treat every rodeo just like it’s another rodeo,” Wright said.

“Instead of letting the situation become bigger than it is, just stick to the basics.”

Wright will look to keep his championship train on the tracks next week, heading to the prestigious Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days.

“We’ll be there Tuesday, and I can’t wait for it, to be honest with you,” Wright said.
