Dingers Win Ragball Championship

Fortunately, there were enough supporters and workers in our small community that didn't mind rescheduling for the following day. Just as the sun settled below the horizon, the fireworks began lighting up the night sky with brilliant colors and lasted for almost 30 minutes.

by Wade Thibodeaux It's the 4th of July and I'm working, but I'm not complaining because sometimes this is the coolest job in the world. I can now add another title to one of our publications. Walker County Press is now an Internationally distributed publication. Let me explain. Last Friday afternoon, I received a call from a young lady who wanted to know where our offices were located.

I told her the address, but then told her that nobody was there and asked her what exactly she was needing. She wanted to know if we still had any of the Championship editions of our paper available for purchase. I asked her whether she was talking about the edition with the actual victory on the cover or was she referring to the parade edition. She said the parade edition and I said well that's actually this week's and I happen to have some with me in the truck. I told her that I was in town and

asked her if we could meet somewhere to exchange the copies. She told me where she was located and I told her to just sit tight and I would be there in a few minutes.

When I pulled up to the location, this young fellow got out of the car and approached my truck. He looked kinda familiar and so I rolled the window down and handed him the papers. He had this funny accent and so being the friendly person that I am, I started asking questions.

Turns out that the reason that he looked familiar was because he was the guy on the front page of the paper that was holding the Championship trophy when the picture was taken. He is the punter for the Bearkats and told me that his "Mum" was back in Australia and wanted a few copies to circulate with family. We visited for a while and talked about the big game before they headed off and then I

realized..... My paper is going to be in a foreign country....we are circulating Internationally.... How cool is that? Sometimes it's the little things in this business that give you the greatest pleasure.

Later that evening, the great country music singer Gene Watson was going to be performing at The Old Town Theatre and I was sure not going to miss that performance. One of the promoters of the event asked me to go backstage and take a picture of him and Gene Watson and so I readily obliged. I just have to tell you guys that Gene Watson is one really nice guy. I had the opportunity to visit with him backstage and he is just a gentleman.

He's actually pretty funny as well and he was very cooperative in posing for any of the pictures that I requested. I was also able to get the picture of him and the promoter and that keeps everybody happy and hopefully I'll be invited backstage for the next time.

Gene Watson put on a heck of a show and that's another one that I can check off of the bucket list in my quest to see live performances of the old school country music greats.

I had an old friend who

has since passed away tell me that you don't make any money in this business, but every once in a while you get a watermelon. Well folks, I got a couple of watermelons last Friday.

ship ring and an old guy that knows how to sing, all in the same day. As I said, I'm writing this on July 4th when most of America is celebrating, but let's not forget to honor those that have fought for this Country so that we can celebrate and enjoy the freedoms that we so enjoy. I've already

COLLEEN HOOVER AND HER BOOKS

In one way, you could say Colleen Hoover is just like any other woman. She has lived in the same place near Sulphur Springs since she was four years old and has been married to the same man for 21 years.

But there the similarity stops. Colleen is a famous, successful writer of romance and thriller novels that have been translated into 40 languages. She responds to all that by saying, “I don’t feel famous.”

She bought a Tesla, but thought it was too weird and traded it in for a Toyota.

She did allow herself one luxury. In her home one of the bookshelves opens up to a secret room where she locks herself in when on deadline. When she’s in that room, it’s off limits to her husband and 3 teenage sons. “The boys are always having friends over, bless their hearts. I tell them if I’m in my office they can talk to me all the want to. But when I’m in my secret room they cannot interrupt me. It’s very hard when you get pulled out of a writing groove.”

Colleen has written 24 books, most of them released by major publishers. One has been

made into a TV series (CONFESS), one became a movie (HOPELESS) and 3 are in the hands of movie producers.

She has had book signings in 20 countries. “I usually do an international tour once a year. I’ve done the Philippines, Poland and Brazil recently.

It’s just been insane.”

All this has happened in the last 10 years after she wrote a book for her mother. “It was a Christmas present and I finished it on Christmas day.” The book, titled SLAMMED is about a slam poet. Her friends wanted to read it, so instead of making copies, she put it on the Internet.

It ended up o the New York Times Best Seller List.

Colleen started charity and raises money for it through a subscription book club. “It’s been a little over 5 years now and we’ve donated nearly 2 million dollars to different charities.”

Colleen lives at a place called Saltillo.

The area round there has benefitted greatly from her generosity.

She has a bookstore in downtown Sulphur Springs called THE BOOKWORM BOX. Once she invited Erika Mitchell (pen name E.

L. James), the British author of the book FIFTY SHADES OF GREY to come to her store for a book signing. “Yeah, that was crazy,” says Colleen.

“She released the book and had 2 signings in the world. One was in New York City and one was in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

I could not believe that she took time out of her schedule to come and do that. It was such a fun, fun day. She donated all of the proceeds that day to our charity.“ Colleen has always written as a hobby. She has a degree in Social Work and was working for the local welfare office and living in a trailer when she started writing that book for her mother.

The people she worked with in the welfare office are now on her staff. “I couldn’t make it without them,” says Colleen.

Thirty-Five individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, June 27 and Saturday, July 3 . Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Beaumont VA Clinic Recruiting Volunteer Drivers The Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic is actively recruiting volunteer drivers to transport Veterans to and from medical appointments.

Using vans maintained by the Houston VA, drivers will transport Veterans from the Beaumont Outpatient Clinic to and from

the main VA Medical Center in Houston.

To be considered, volunteers must have valid driver’s license, proof of current insurance, a safe driving record, and a clear background check. Applicants must also pass a physical exam.

Volunteers are eligible for free

meals, the COVID–19 vaccination, annual flu shots, and other benefits from the Houston VA’s robust volunteer recognition program.

VA’s Beaumont Outpatient Clinic serves approximately 10,000 Veterans. The Clinic offers primary care, pharmacy

and some specialty services.

Last year, as temperatures soared into the triple digits in Texas, staff at 39 Texas State Parks handled 132 heatrelated illnesses in humans and pets.

Now that the summer has officially begun and temperatures are steadily climbing, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is sharing their top six heat hacks for staying safe in the outdoors.

Here are the top six heat hacks recommended for park visitors: Hydrate- It’s important to drink at least 16 ounces of water every hour in the heat to replenish your body and prevent dehydration.

Don’t forget to bring enough for your four-legged family members too.

Block the RaysApply a generous amount of sunscreen or sunblock before heading outdoors. Be sure to reapply every couple of hours, and

after swimming or sweating.

Dress Smart- Wear light, loose-fitting, breathable clothing; a hat, correct shoes, sunscreen and wet bandanas to keep you cool while in the sun.

For pets, protect paws against blistering by hitting the trails during cooler times of the day when the ground isn’t hot or by putting booties on pets to help shield paws from the hot ground. Touch the pavement or ground with the back of your hand. If you cannot hold it there for five seconds, the surface is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Stay Salty- Food helps keep up energy and replace salt lost from sweating. Eating snacks such as jerky, granola, trail mix, tuna and dried fruit is a fantastic way to nourish your body while on the trails.

I did not realize I had moved to the edge of the bed in my sleep. When I started to get up, I fell to the floor. I hit my nightstand in the process, resulting in a large bruise and a very sore arm.

“Stay far away from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22) Living close to the “edge of sin” in this life.

Ahhhhh freedom. July 4th. That day which we have celebrated the independence of our country, from the tyranny of Britain.

Freedom is a complicated word.

It’s not one that comes without sacrifice.

Without fights.

Without loss. Unfortunately, freedom is frequently quite ugly.

History is a deep part of this country, and it’s freedom. In the last few years, a lot of turmoil has been caused by the removal of statues, renaming of things, to stop honoring those who may not have been honorable after all. Frequently, I have read, “we can’t change history” as he continues to recover from left hip surgery he underwent in Nashville back in April.

“Holy moly, I am so ready to go. I feel awesome,” Divino said.

and “if you don’t teach these historical moments, you repeat them”, and “teaching history accurately is a must”. And I agree!

Yet….Can I just say I had never heard of the Tulsa race riots prior to last year. I’m 54. I was not taught about them in school. I’m a history nerd. Never a peep inschool. My 75 year old mom?

Wasn’t taught of them either. My 29 year old daughter? Nope.

You want your head turned, read up on Thomas Jefferson, Grover Cleveland, or more popular JFK. All did fantastic things for our country. As well, all had some seriously shady behavior, that was nowhere near the “hero” status we have been taught to hold them in.

My opinion only, we have been teaching selective historical moments for years.

This isn’t new.

If a historical moment is deemed too disturbing, it is often omitted. We weaken it, we make

it comfortable, or….. we don’t discuss it.

Once again, freedom isn’t always pretty.

Often it’s not.

We can not continue to say, you can not remove our history, yet be ok with completely omitted history. After all what is the difference?

Maybe what we need to do is correctly teach ALL history.

Good, bad or ugly.

Happy Independence Day peeps…..I would like to urge all of us to educate ourselves, prior to being against one thing or the other.

While I’m not a fan of the violence that has besieged our country over the last few years, I am smart enough to see, we all tend to look at things from the perspective that benefits us the most.

We let our personal views skew what is right or wrong, we let our own feelings dictate passiveness over civil rights issues, or violence to try and even things out. At some point, we have to become the

independent thinkers, that led to this most revered of holidays, and look at things of right and wrong.

It’s not right to burn a town, because you feel someone has been mistreated. It’s also not right, to claim the random statue remains up, because it’s history…..yet continue to ignore that things like the Tulsa race riots were horrific and multiple generations are just not taught about it.

Right is right, wrong is wrong. That never goes along political party, race, sex, or financial standings.

Freedom and liberty for all is just that. For all.

May our country find some tolerance for one another, step into someone else’s shoes for a second, view things from the other side, you may just find that history is not and has not, always been accurately depicted.

And it’s ok if we change that, to cover all. Not just what makes us feel good.

Lucas talked things over with his wife, Tayler, and the couple decided the best thing for them was for Lucas to get his hips

fixed.

The original plan was for Divino to first get his left hip repaired via Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd in Nashville in April and then get his right hip surgically repaired a few months later.

However, Divino has since decided to delay

Through work, I met a man who owned land in the Restricted Area, and he gave us permission to hunt it. John Bell and his wife, Erin, came with us.

It took us longer to get into the area than expected. The two-lane dirt road into it was impenetrably dusty and two drivers going too fast in opposite directions -- already in a jubilant fog of their own -- hit head-on. The roadway was blocked for an hour.

That at least spared us time sweltering in the South Texas noonday sun. We finally set up along a fence

line spaced between other hunters. Then a man began stalking toward us along the fence, running people off from it. As he approached, I propped my shotgun against a tree and walked toward him with a smile and an outstretched hand.

He ignored me, saying emphatically that we had to leave.

I told him we had the landowner’s permission. He rudely said that didn’t matter; his company’s lease gave them all surface rights, including hunting. We briefly discussed it and I asked to see the lease.

Flustered, he decided we could hunt out in the middle of the on-

ion field by a big pecan tree, although we wouldn’t see many birds.

As sundown neared, we had only shot a few doves. Then, I noticed a large flock of something coming up the field. I thought they were grackles. As they neared, hunters along the fence futilely shot at them. The birds were WHITEWINGS! Then they came into range.

We shot all our ammo.

I even hit one with a dirt clod. It was wild.

But the guns along the fence were silent. Out of range.

It was a hot barreled hunt … until we ran out of shells.

Divino expects to be ready to return to the Unleash The Beast at some point in August, potentially as soon as the PBR Express Ranches Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 31/Aug. 1 The 27-year-old is still very much in contention for a World Finals qualification spot. Divino is ranked No. 41st in the world standings, and he trails No. 35 J.T. Moore by 26 points. Divino is only 4-for-11 in six UTB events.

The hip and knee injuries put a damper on Divino’s development this season as it appeared he may be ready to take the next step in his career following an 11thplace finish last year in the world standings.

Divino struggled in the second half last season with injuries to his left arm and right riding hand as he faded out of the world title conversation. Unlike past seasons, Divino dedicated himself to a workout program in the offseason to attempt to get his body ready for the 2021 season.

“This year I can be at the top and be better than

last year,” Divino said at the season-opener in Ocala, Florida. “Every single year I try to think about something else and fix what I do wrong. For me, this year I started preparing early, working out.

I worked out more because I wanted to start the year and be ready. Before I would only start working out when the events started, so I would be a little late before getting in shape,” This year I took a break mentally but physically I kept training. I know I have some bone spurs, but I feel good because I kept working out.”

Of course, those bone spurs became a larger issue as the season progressed and Divino had to undergo surgery.

Divino now believes with one of the two hips repaired that he is healthy enough to be a force in the second half and qualify for the World Finals.

“My right hip doesn’t bother me, and my knee now feels so good (from rest and rehab),” Divino concluded. “I am just working out and making it stronger.

Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine’s Great Outdoor Scavenger Hunt The Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine’s Great Outdoor Scavenger Hunt (GOSH) returns for another year of summer fun across Texas.

Travel to various locations regionally or statewide, take a selfie and post it with the hashtag #GOSH2021.

Discover history, wildlife, parks, waterways and quirky attractions — plus iconic Texas food stops as a “bonus” to enjoy along the way. The GOSH 2021 challenge ends at midnight on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

Select from six regions, including Dallas, Central Texas, Houston, Panhandle, South Texas and West Texas. Register on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine website or the TPWD Facebook Page, then find the spot, take a smiling selfie and tag it on Twitter or Instagram. Participants can also post and tag it on the TPWD Facebook Page with #GOSH2021. Partakers can visit locations regionally or

statewide and complete one or all GOSH activities.

"We are so ready to have fun outdoors again," says Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine editor Louie Bond. "GOSH inspires those day trips that make lifelong memories.

Pack the ice chest and your swimsuits and hit the road for a summer of fun. Share selfies everywhere you go, and you'll have bragging rights at Thanksgiving for being great Texas adventurers."

In South Texas, snap a selfie at one of the park’s wildlife watching or nature trails at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

With the Gulf of Mexico in the background, take a breezy break at the wooden beach picnic shelters at Mustang Island State Park. Grab a photo in front of the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum’s seven flags or holding a copy of the Laredo Morning Times, with seven flags on its banner. Visit GOSH 2021

Those who complete activities regionally will receive a TPWD certificate and a shout-out in a future issue of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine.

If participants complete all 30 activities (36 with bonus activities in each category) on this year’s TPWD Great Outdoor Scavenger Hunt, they will receive a downloadable certificate and a two-year digital subscription to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, plus some epic bragging rights.
