by Wade Thibodeaux I reached a milestone this past weekend. My youngest graduated from High School. Little did I know 19 years ago when I made the comment that it would be a race to see which happened first, her graduation from college or me signing up for Medicare that mine and her world would be much different in these 19 years. Within just a few hours of her birth, neither college or Medicare was the objective. She was fighting for her life in Texas Children's Hospital and all I could do was pray for just the next hour to go better. She eventually won the initial battle and was discharged from TCH on Halloween day. The next few years provided additional struggles that involved countless doctors appointments, some medical procedures, another almost two week hospital stay with a round of pneumonia, and eventually things

started to level out and she became stronger medically. Things were going along pretty smoothly for her and she was learning to cope with her disabilities, and we were learning how to do things as well to accommodate her needs and I got a divorce.

Now, Annie is living in two houses basically as she is shuffled from house to house on alternating weekends and she just goes with the flow. This scenario rocks along for a few years and we start to see a few changes in Annie. Some of the changes seem to be somewhat normal as in the onset of teenage years and some can be attributed to Annie figuring how to play her parents against each other so that Annie gets what Annie wants. Her Senior year is just an outright struggle to get her through the process as she has an extremely bad case of senioritis and I'm not certain

that if it hadn't been for Covid-19 and the alternative remote learning platforms that we would have actually made it through the year to graduate. Regardless, we made it and we were pretty much ready for graduation. The night before graduation, Annie has a complete meltdown and I'm not sure that she will even walk across the stage the next morning.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. I'm legally divorced, but I will never be completely separated from my ex wife because of Annie. My ex and I have our moments of disagreement, but we have always been able to set aside our differences for the benefit of the kids. We had been in communication all week in preparations for this graduation ceremony and all of the logistics that came along with it. I will be the first to admit, I don't have a clue about how to do hair and makeup and how to color match shoes to the jewelry and all of that girly stuff. We had made plans to meet at a neutral location on the way to the graduation venue so that my ex could put the finishing touches on Annie before she walked into the gradu-

ation ceremony, but then at 10:00 pm. the night before, everything changed. Annie's meltdown called for a drastic change of plans and I went to bed that night with the plan of my ex being at my house at 6:00 am the next morning to help Annie regroup and get through this process.

Thankfully,(Much credit to my ex) everything went smoothly and uneventful as the girls gathered in Annie's room the next morning and selected clothes,

shoes, hair devices, and whatever else was needed for the day. Annie was in a much better mood and we all ended up at the venue looking presentable and ready for the day. I was able to get Annie situated and then was able to turn my attention to my job of taking pictures and covering graduation for the paper. Annie, as she has always been able to overcome obstacles, handled the ceremony like she was an old pro and even though

she was one of the first to cross the stage was right on point as she accepted her diploma from the Principal while shaking his hand and then proceeded to each stop along the way, shaking hands or taking a picture, whichever was required. It's been a crazy ride, but I wouldn't change it for the world......unless I could make it better for the kids. Congratulations, Annie......you made it. Till next time, I'm........Wade in the Shade.

THE SYMBOL OF A NEW BEGINNING

When she was 9 years old Tina Siemens of Seminole considered apricots as candy. “We were so poor we couldn’t afford candy,” says Tina, who loved canned green beans. “That was my favorite thing to eat, just straight out of the can. I had an apricot for dessert.

Once after eating an apricot I wondered what would happen if I planted the apricot pit. So I dug a little hole about 3 inches deep and planted the pit in it. I cut the top and bottom of the can the green beans were in so it was open at both ends and put it over the pit to mark the spot. Every day I’d go and pour some water on it. In less than a year it sprouted.

So it was about 4 or 5 inches tall when we moved from that location to another place nearby. I couldn’t leave my little apricot seedling behind so I went and dug it up and replanted it in the new place.

It grew to be a tall tree and for years and years we got apricots off of that tree. In winter we would cover it with plastic and do other things to make it survive the cold.”

The tree produced 5 gallons of apricots a year for 16 years. When Tina married at age 19, she and her husband moved to Canada for a year.

“When we came back I just picked up making apricot jams from either that tree or other trees that were in town.

People started bringing me apricots because they knew I loved them.

Sometimes they would call me and say the apricots were ready to be picked.”

Tina’s enjoyment of apricots began in 1977 when her family and other Mennonites moved to Seminole from Mexico. A neighbor gave the family some apricots.

The planting of that seed in their new home in Seminole represented a new beginning for her and the other Mennonite families. “It was so similar to us having been uprooted in Mexico and transplanted here in Gaines County. It was just like when I dug up that little seedling and transplanted it in the new place when we moved.

It grew and produced a hundredfold, symbolizing a new beginning.”

Tina hired artist Jammey Huggins to create a sculpture of her planting that seedling when she was 9. Jammey took a year to complete it. “I had her come over a couple of times and check it, you know, see if that was what she wanted,” says Jammey.

“I just love the story behind

it.” Tina says Jammey got it just right. “I couldn’t be more pleased.” The sculpture is titled New Beginning.

Setting up the scene and models for the sculpture is a story in itself. The sculpture shows a little girl planting the 4-inch seedling while her parents look on. The girls’ father is standing nearby holding a shovel while his wife looks on as the little girl puts the seedling into the ground. Tina’s 9-yearold granddaughter posed as Tina planting the little tree.

Tina’s brother posed as the father. Tine posed as her mom. Jammey took several photos of the planting scene from different angles.

Every detail was covered, including the ribbons on the little girl’s hat and the name of the used implement dealer on the man’s cap.

Jammey says she loved doing it. Tina says she will always have an apricot tree no matter where she lives.. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Twenty-Two individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, May 30 and Saturday, June 5 . Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Williams on April 4,1932 in Wharton, Texas. She married her beloved husband, C.L. Wade, on August 6, 1955, at age 23 in Wharton, Texas. Mary Louise studied at the University of Texas, in Austin. We all hear the words triggered, woke, angered, and simply fed up. We see people who have reached those levels. But what do you do, when you look in the mirror and realize…… that you have become…. triggered.

I think everyone eventually has something in life that shakes them. That will bring out the fight in them. That will cause them to reevaluate how they handle the situation that has triggered their anger.

The older you get the more times you find yourself with this level of determination. It’s not that you are old and crabby. It’s that you have reached a point of seeing more, witnessing more, being deceived,

and falsely led. There is much truth to becoming wiser with age.

Over the course of the last three weeks, since an 18” rain event slammed Fannett, I have found myself with a boiling rage. Anyone who knows me knows I tend to stay calm, rational, and level headed. Right up until you mess with those I love.

In an effort to not be one of the thousands calling our drainage district, I opted for an email. Few days went by, I followed up. Still hearing crickets. Then I followed up again, and copied a few bosses in that email. Low and behold I got an email the next day.

I was not asking for them to do brain surgery.

I wanted to know if I misunderstood an email from their office a year ago. The information I was given, appeared to disagree with what I saw on their website.

I wanted clarification.

It could have been handled super easily, and eventually THAT question was answered, by the boss that I had to copy. I now I have a sit

down meeting coming up soon.

But I couldn’t help wondering, why? Why did it take 3 emails, why did I have to involve bosses, why did it take TEN days to get a response? Why must someone get so damned angry in an effort to get a simple clarification?

Communication, transparency, and openness avoid a whole lot of issues. When you cease to communicate, to respond, you bring on more questions. You give people time to dig.

You encourage a bigger problem than you had to begin with….. all because you opt to not respond. Until the 10th day.

When you don’t communicate, you bring upon the air of arrogance.

The questions of honesty.

The conversations of comparing notes because you are now viewed as untrustworthy. Simple facts are, if you shut down communication you are perceived as guilty, whether you are or not.

Communication can

save us all from a multitude of problems.

Talking to others, not at others, helps as well.

Listening to those who put you in a position of power. Acknowledging that one house flooded is too many. I’ve seen some improvements over the course of the last 18 months with our drainage district, I can’t omit that. But the events of 3 weeks ago have proven, we need more. More work, more cleaning, more clearing, but bottom line…… more communication.

I never have felt like I cared about anything enough to protest.

Flooding my home, my neighbors, my family, I promise you…. I care enough. And while I may not show up with a picket sign, or march down a street, I have become quietly…. triggered. I hope my community has too.

This weeks response has proven what my momma always told me…… no one listens to me until I am at a full fledged scream. The thing is, at this point all of you should be too.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Mary

Williams, as well as her brother, Richard H. Williams.

Memorial donations in honor of Mrs. Wade may be made to Andice Baptist Church, or to the Texas Baptist Children’s Home in Round Rock, Texas.

A Celebration of Life was held at 11:00 a.m.

on Friday, June 4th, 2021, at Andice Baptist Church, 6570 FM 970, Florence, Texas 76527.

We were on our deck watching it rain. But our dogs seemed highly interested in the empty collapsible trash bin we put pruned branches in.

Vicky said it might be a cotton rat as she tipped it over.

Our smaller dog darted in, snapped at something unseen, and dashed out, heading to the doggie door, and inside.

shot past me. Vicky accelerated into hot pursuit. I grabbed the trash picker-upper that we handle dead critters with and followed closely. I heard her yell “DROP IT!” several times from inside.

If you had just nabbed a wild thing, wouldn’t you have wanted to eat it on the living room rug, too?

Ours have carted in dead rats, squirrels, a dove, and an owl.

Then Vicky yelled, “It’s a bat!” And she didn’t mean a Louisville Slugger!

“Don’t touch it!” I warned. She carefully held tripled-plastic bags open as I released the trash grabber handles and bagged the bat. The Internet said don’t freeze the specimen.

Next morning, I took it to the Department of State Health Services Lab. A nice lady called me 24-hours later.

The test was NEGATIVE. Our dogs’ vaccinations are always kept current. But we had been worried after Ruger carried the bat in his mouth. All is well, though, following the negative report.

Bats carry rabies -an insidious disease.

But like the fear of blood-sucking vampire bats from old horror movies, the fear is overblown.

TPWD biologist, Jonah Evans, termed bat-born rabies as “uncommon”. He referred me to TPWD’s bat information. Accordingly, less than one-percent contract rabies. It does still occur, however. Keep your guard up. Don’t handle live bats -they can bite -- or dead bats, barehanded. Get them tested.

And don’t demonize bats. Their bad reputation overshadows the good they perform. Foremost, they eat kazillions of mosquitoes every night!

Each bat consumes roughly 1,200, nightly. Some are said to gobble close to 3, 000! As much rain as we’ve had in recent weeks, we’re expecting a monumental mosquito infestation!

Texas hosts 32 species of bats. Most common is the Mexican Free-tailed bat.

Its main enemies are white-nose syndrome, rabies, hitting vehicles, wind turbine blades, and cold

billion$. Bat droppings, known as guano, are commercially gathered, too – giving mosquitoes a purpose for existing … I guess.

Bats retreat from daylight in caves, rocks, old buildings, bridges, mines, and trees.

They’ve even become tourist attractions.

Bracken Cave is the largest bat colony in

the world, hosting 15-20 million bats each summer. Located in southern Comal County near San Antonio, it is owned by Bat Conservation International. See website. The most popular site in Texas is Austin’s Congress Ave. Bridge. And it’s free!

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) P-EBT is a food benefit for families with children who temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price meals at school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

P-EBT is for families with children who meet one of the following criteria: Up to 21 years old and certified for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) at a school in Texas during the 2020–2021 school year.

Up to 21 years old and attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) or Provision 2 (P2) school that offers free meals to all students.

Born after Aug. 1, 2014, in families who received SNAP benefits for at least one month between October 2020 and June 2021.

Schools will send families a link to the application so they can apply once it is open. For more information, visit hhs.texas.gov/pebt or call the P-EBT Call Center at 833-442-1255.

Who needs to complete an online application?

• Eligible students in families who did not receive SNAP benefits for at least one month during the 2020–2021 school year.

• Eligible students born on or before Aug. 1, 2014, in families who received SNAP benefits for the first time during the 2020–2021 school year in May or June 2021.

The following items are required on the P-EBT application: 1. Parent/legal guardian name, date of birth and sex 2. Physical address 3. Child’s name, date of birth, sex, school district county, school district and campus name 4. Public school students must provide either their Social Security number or state-assigned number (S-number) It is important to put a valid phone number on the application because staff may need to call you before approving the application.

How will eligible families get P-EBT benefits?

Household food items, such as fruits, meats/poultry/fish, dairy and breads.

P-EBT benefits can be used wherever SNAP food benefits are accepted.

• Families who got SNAP benefits during the 2020–2021 school year will have P-EBT benefits loaded on their current Lone Star Card.

• Families who did not get SNAP benefits during the 2020–2021 school year will have a P-EBT Card with funds mailed to them.

Award-Winning Bareback Horse Craig at Midnight Passes Away Powder River Rodeo's Craig at Midnight, the 2016 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year and the top bareback horse at the 2017 National Finals Rodeo, passed away June 5. He was 15.

"This was just out of the blue, and we don't have any idea what happened to him," said Lori Franzen of Powder River Rodeo. "It's devastating and a total shock.

Craig at Midnight was buried next to the Franzen's house under a cottonwood tree next to Powder River Rodeo's bareback horse Khadafy Skoal. Khadafy Skoal was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2012.

The last time Craig at Midnight competed was April 17 at the Red Bluff (Calif.) RoundUp. Wyatt Bloom had an

81-point ride aboard the horse.

"He had such a cool personality, and he was just so talented and athletic for his obscene size," Franzen said. "He weighed 1,700 pounds.

He was huge. Around the ranch he was kind.

He had some attitude, but he would never try and hurt you. When he was in the chute, he would buck so hard every time and he gave his full heart every time."

Craig at Midnight was the 2016 Pendleton Whisky "Let 'er Buck" Bucking Stock of the Year in bareback riding.

That year Craig had 11 outs during the regular season, with eight of the 11 riders lasting eight seconds. All eight of those cowboys earned a check, with two of them placing first and two others placing second.

The gray gelding went to the NFR eight consecutive years (2013-20).

Franzen said they have a full sister to Craig at Midnight, Chop, 16.

In 2017 at the NFR, Craig at Midnight and C5 Rodeo's Virgil split the honor for Top Stock of the NFR. At that NFR, Craig at Midnight bucked off Clayton Bi-

glow in Round 3 while eventual Bareback Riding World Champion Tim O'Connell had an 85-point ride on Craig at Midnight to split fourth place in Round 8.

"We were thinking about retiring him at the NFR this year," Franzen said.

Craig at Midnight competed in saddle bronc riding a few times but that wasn’t his specialty.

"He just didn't care for the bronc riding very well, and you could see that wasn't his favorite," Franzen said. "He was just a great horse, and he will be dearly missed."
