Chambers County RunOff Election Results

Terri Leo Wilson was the winner in the run-off election held on May 24, 2022. She is now the Republican Party Candidate and will face Democratic Party Candidate Keith G. Henry in the general election in November. By Wade Thibodeaux Chambers County voters took to the polls over the last several days leading up to the run-off election that was held on May

24, 2022 and with no local candidates on the Democratic Party ballot and only one race(excluding Precinct Chairs) on the local Republican Party ballot, the voter turnout was just over 10 percent. Only 3,403 voters out of 32,440 that are registered in Chambers County bothered to take the time to vote. The results, however, count the same as if it had been a large turnout and Terrii Leo Wilson handily defeated Patrick Gurski in the State Representative, District 23 race by a margin of 1,849(57.57%) to 1,363(42.43%). Wilson also won the Galveston County vote by a margin of 3,358(57.76%) to 2,456(42.24%). The two Counties comprise the 23rd District in the Texas House of Representatives and Wilson will now face Democratic (contd on page 5)

By Wade Thibodeaux The Winnie Stowell Noon Optimist Club hosted an event at the East Chambers Elementary School last Thursday afternoon, May 26, 2022. The event was the fourth of the scheduled events(Known as the C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club) for the year and

featured the clucking and crowing contest for the fourth graders. The C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club is an anti drug campaign that is aimed at fourth graders to bring awareness to the hazards of drugs. The Chambers County Sheriff's Office supports the efforts of the club by providing an officer to

engage the youngsters at each meeting and the Winnie Stowell Optimist Club provides support, food, drink, and prizes for each of the four meetings during the school year. The clucking and crowing contest is held to allow the 4th graders to show off their skills and a panel of three

judges work through the group to determine the best clucker(girl) and crower(boy) and award them with prizes. This year, they each received a Kindle for their efforts and hard work. This year's winners were Zanei Garza and Levi Samuel.

Wade In the Shade by Wade Thibodeaux There is a lot going on in the World right now and I’m really struggling to figure out how to comment on all of the happenings. It’s pretty easy to say, I told you so, but that really doesn’t solve anything. I’m predominantly referring to the school shooting in Uvalde last week and I really don’t know where to start with my comments. I guess the first place is to express my sincere condolences and offer my prayers, just like most have done and I really feel like the prayers are a solution, but they are a long term solution and we need something done right now. By a long term solution, I’m referring to the fact that this Country needs to return to God fearing ways and I’m firmly convinced that

Banning the assault rifle is not a solution, they(whoever they are) will just use a different type of weapon, whether it be a different type of gun, or a knife, machete, car, bomb, whatever they can figure out that will inflict the most pain and suffering. I just returned from a Memorial Day service at the Veterans Museum and I was visiting with an old friend and we both decided that we didn’t get here overnight and it won’t be fixed overnight, but something has to be done. I’m pretty well sure that most of our troubles started when we quit counting the score at the Little League game because we didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings if

they lost the game. It just seems like when people don’t ever lose at anything, even something as insignificant as a Little League baseball game, the first time that something goes wrong in their life, they go off the deep end and do something crazy. Mental health is a complicated issue and I’m not trying to say that keeping score at a ball game will fix all of our problems, but we got here somehow and we need to figure out how to turn the tide and start going the other way. Maybe the word “Accountability” would be a good word to use and practice right now. It seems like nobody wants to be accountable for their own actions.....it’s always somebody else’s fault, not mine. A simple exercise in that arena would be to go to Facebook and try to follow a thread on just about any subject. Somebody could post that the sky is blue and somebody would eventually counter that it was red and then somebody would say that it was be-

cause their car was stolen and then it’s off onto another totally separate subject that had nothing to do with the sky, but it wasn’t their fault. I don’t know, but it’s going to take somebody way smarter than me to figure out this problem, but I wish they would hurry up because I’m tired of this endless news cycle of violence. swers to the violence and our society. I did something again this week that I had never done before. Last time, I told you that I paid over $4.00 a gallon for gasoline and this time as gas prices have continued to climb, I had to put my card in twice to fill my truck. Either my card or the pump has a maximum of $100.00 and when it gets there, the pump quits. I had to put my card back in the pump and get another

$17.00 or so to finish filling my tank. That has happened twice in the last week. I fill up at least twice weekly, and at a $100 a pop, that’s........a lot of money in a month. I’m currently spending more on gasoline than my house note was when I had a mortgage. Maybe, I need to quit worrying about society’s problems and fix my own. Till next time, I’m........ ENNIS HAS KOLACHE, BLUEBONNETS AND POLKA By Tumbleweed Smith

Ennis has had a Bluebonnet Festival 70 years. “We have bluebonnet trails that go through some of the rural towns east of here,” says Jean Paul Beebe, an active resident of Ennis. “Some of those towns are Bristol, Alsdorf, Crisp, Telico and others you’ve never heard of.” Country music legend Ernest Tubb was born at Crisp. The famous outlaw Clyde Barrow was born at Telico. A lot of descendants of Czech immigrants live in Ennis. “When those early settlers got to this area it reminded them of their homeland with this rich, blackland soil they could farm. That was a way of life they could take on and start a new life. Czech is a culture that at one point was the third highest populated culture in the state of Texas.” Stores in Ennis sell lots of a popular food item. “The kolache is not a pig in a blanket that has the little sausage rolled up in dough. A kolache is a fruit pastry. In Czech the word kolache is already plural. Kolach singular,

kolache plural. The savory version which has a sausage rolled up in dough is klobasnik. Some people say klobasniki, the plural version.” Downtown Ennis is undergoing revitalization, restoring some historic buildings. “Our Ennis Theater has just re-opened. It does live theater performances. We have a farmers market downtown that brings in thousands of people from Dallas, and Fort Worth and cities all around Ennis.” The major attraction in Ennis is the 3-day National Polka Festival held every Memorial Day weekend. This year marked the 55th anniversary of the event. “We’ve had numbers ranging from 30,00 to 50,000 people who have attended. Our population dramatically increases over the Memorial Day weekend.” It’s all about music, food, dancing and fun. Jean Paul is director of the festival and says planning for it takes about 9 months. “It’s first class music. These musicians are playing somewhere at

least 40 weeks a year at different locations across the state. We have 15 different polka bands playing in three separate venues plus we have a band downtown and you get to hear that music all over the downtown area. Since it is a national festival, we have bands from other states. Every year we have different bands.” High-ranking officials and entertainers from the Czech Republic attend every year. Since a lot of the dancers’ costumes are historically traditional, some of the younger people from the Czech Republic have never seen them. They come over here to see some of their history. Forty-Two individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, May 22 and Saturday, May 27. Warrants from last week are also as followed. The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County. Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine. • Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine. • Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. • State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison. • Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. Swearingen Wins Finals and World Championships at PBR Daylon Swearingen went into the PBR Unleash the Beast World Finals 2022 in first place in the World Standings, but quickly lost that position when he was bucked off his bull on the first night. Swearingen rebounded to ride six consecutive times and regained the first position and never relinquished the lead.

Swearingen is a native of Piffard, New York, but now resides in Sulphur Springs, Texas added the World Finals title and the World Champion title to his already impressive list of accomplishments. He is a High School Champion, a College Champion, and a Canadian Champion. His previous best in the World

Finals was 12th in 2020, but this year's 539.75 points in the World Finals was good enough to win the contest and added to his accumulated points throughout the season to tally 1717.49 for the World Championship title. He gathered up a smooth $1,000,000.00 for the World Championship, $300,000.00

for the Finals win, and some pocket change of $94,000.00 for his round placings over the eight total rounds. He was riding with a pair of taped up boots because they felt good and he didn't want to change anything that could stop his momentum. He can now comfortably afford a (contd on page 7)

Staying With The Herd

I was driving past a field that was home to a small herd of long-horned cattle. What drew my attention to them was one cow in particular. She left the rest of the herd and had worked her head through the fence to eat the grass on the other side. Now she was struggling to get untangled, but her horns were holding her fast. I wanted to stop and help; however, I was driving in a funeral procession at the time. The more I see people “leaving the herd,” the more entangled with the world I see them become. What hurts even more, is sometimes there is nothing you can do to help them. Galatians 5:1 says, “Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Danny R. Uvalde. There was a time that Uvalde for most Texans was synonymous with heading to central Texas, in the spring there was bluebonnets, in the fall the rush of hunters headed to their west Texas leases. Small town, like the majority of them in Texas, 16,000 residents or so. Then on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, evil descended on that town. In the blink of an eye that town was decimated. That small of a town, I promise everyone knows someone who lost a family member that day. 21 lives gone. So what do we do from here? Well the obvious is, we send prayers. We will think of the victims. Then we will quietly resume life. Until the next shooting. And the next. I hate to quote the President, but seriously where does it stop? Before I go one step further, let me say, I am former Winnie Library in his honor and christened the building the "Commissioner Mark Huddleston Community Building". Many individuals had made the trip to Anahuac that morning to have their voices heard via "Citizen's Comments" during the court session and several of them made public comments concerning the proposed

a believer in the 2nd amendment, and I do not think removing all guns solves anything. Guns don’t shoot by themselves. But follow me here, if you will. Since April of 1999, when 2 students did the unthinkable at Columbine, we have lost 169 live ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES. 169 lives. I am not discussing street crime, mass shooting in stores, malls, wherever. This is at educational facilities. 169 lives in 23 years. How is this even still happening? I have my thoughts, you have yours. But as a nation we have become so saturated with hate, intolerance, and discord, that we can’t see beyond what we want personally, to look at the bigger picture and figure out what helps all. That “one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for ALL” has been lost. Last week after the shootings, I posted a simple question. “What are you willing to PERSONALLY sacrifice to stop mass shootings”. I had four responses. Not patting myself on the back but I get a pretty decent response percentage normally to questions on social media. Four. While two just told me what won’t

work. Nothing wrong with that, no response is right or wrong, I was just curious. So 1/3 is at a loss. Folks this is like fighting flooding issues. I know 60” of rain is catastrophic and homes will flood. I’m not completely irrational. But I also know that trees growing in drainage districts, failed levees, and lack of maintenance do NOTHING TO HELP. Once again, do what you can instead of saying what won’t work, and maybe actually accomplish something. Many of these mass shootings have been committed by people who legally purchased guns. Most showed signs of mental distress. All purchased multiple weapons in close timing, as well as buying small war chests of ammo. Facts are, yes a person can always get a weapon if they want it. But did that 18 year old know how to do so? I don’t know how to illegally buy a gun. Chances are great he didn’t either. Or that would have been his route. Tighten the restrictions. Fund mental health. Make it easier for your police force to maintain mental health officers, so they can help. Hold people re-

sponsible for aiding the policing of their community, because if you see something SAY SOMETHING. If some nut job tells you they are going to shoot someone, REPORT IT. Failure to do so should be criminally charged. I don’t have a happy Sunday peeps in me right now. My heart hurts for what is continuing to happen, while we argue about what won’t work. Clean the ditch of debris, THEN tell me you’ve done all you can. Fix what we can. As previously stated, I agree that you won’t legislate evil. I agree and support the right to bear arms. I agree that guns can’t kill people by themselves and it is therefore the shooter. I do not and never will agree that we can do nothing better for the children of America than continue to send our thoughts and prayers, and blindly believe it won’t happen in our community. We have GOT TO TRY SOMETHING. 169 lives lost on school grounds deserve that at the very least. I’m tired of hearing we will pray, and still we do nothing.

After several citizens spoke against the revisions to the program, the Court decided to table the item and appoint a committee to work with the citizens to develop some new procedures.

The Court took a break at 10:30 am. for the annual "Moment at the Memorial" to honor the fallen Officers of Chambers County. After the break, the Court returned to approve some reinvestment zones and tax abatement applications as well as a nuisance abatement for 416 Bertrand Street in Winnie, Texas. The Court tabled an agenda item that dealt with a "No Wake Zone"

and or "Trolling Motor Only" signage in Turtle Bayou and approved the consent agenda in its entirety with the exception of one item that was tabled. The next regular session of Chambers County Commissioners Court will be Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 9:30 am. in the County Courtroom of the Chambers County Courthouse in Anahuac, Texas.

the newly exposed lake shore. The falling lake exposed the mussels to the sunshine and warmer water. Kazillions died. Their sharp, dried shells were everywhere. Fishermen complained of lines being cut by shells. But then, Alan noticed that the mussels began disappearing. Catfish, carp, and perch were credited with their absence. I contacted TPWD for their opinion. Inland Fisheries Director, Craig Bonds, said he doubted that zeebs were permanently gone, and referred me to Monica McGarrity, their senior aquatic invasive species scientist. Ms. McGarrity con-

firmed what Bonds had said and added that the mussels often decline after an initial population peak. Although lake level fluctuations, summer heat, food supply shortages, and fish predation can contribute, she said populations cycle between boom and bust. Demise reports may be greatly exaggerated. Sadly, it sounds like zebra mussels are here to stay. Speaking of invasive species, TPWD is again urging boaters to help prevent spread of zebras, giant salvinia, water hyacinths, crested floating heart, and now – quagga mussels. Salvinia can double its coverage in a

week. Its surface mats can render fishing, boating, swimming – all water recreation – nearly impossible. Who wants THAT! Giant salvinia is now in 23 East Texas lakes, numerous streams, and marshes -- and counting. Zebra mussels are in 33, statewide. But we can EACH do something to help combat the expansion. Cleaning, draining, and drying our boats EVERY time we leave a lake can help retard the spread. And if you think one boater can’t make a difference, ask yourself like our preacher asked Sunday: “Can one mosquito in the bedroom make a difference?”

As Lake Travis fishing guide, Alan Christenson, Jr., and I shared fishing stories recently, I mentioned that on a recent trip to Lake Austin, all I caught were a couple of zebra mussels. My lure being slowly fished along the bottom in hope of catching a rare lunker bass caught the mussels as it passed over the structure to which the zeebs were attached. Bass thrive in aquatic vegetation. It’s their habitat and sanctuary. When hydrilla was at its peak, so was the bass fishing.

After overstocking of grass carp, fishing declined. Good news for anglers this year was that a 13.96-pound largemouth was caught in Austin by Josh Irvine, as previously reported. Hopefully, that’s a sign of better things to come, and not just a one-strikewonder. Hydrilla growth can quickly become too much of a good thing. It’s a pain for lakeside landowners who have trouble getting their boats out of stalls and into the lake. It also makes swimming

dangerous. Entanglement in weeds restricts arm and leg movements. There have been several tragedies. Reconciling competing interests has been a headache for decision makers. Alan Christenson had also caught several mussels on treble hooks in Lake Travis, the lake above Austin in the Highland Lakes chain. Smallest Rays The smallest ray is the short-nose electric ray which is about 4 inches across and weighs less than a pound.

Electric rays are named for their ability to generate and transmit an electric current to stun prey and for protection from predators.

Stingrays burrow in the sand in shallow waters to hide from predators or wait for prey to swim by. Their colors often match the sand or mud where they hide. This is called camouflage.

Manta rays can grow to be more than

Manta rays never stop swimming and travel in large groups to feeding grounds. These large groups can include as many as rays and are known as a fever.

When walking in shallow waters where stingrays live, do the stingray shuffle. Shuffle your feet along the bottom to warn hiding stingrays that you are coming. The shy, gentle creature will hear you and swim away before you step on it.
