Lions Club Invites Community to Hear Pandemic Story

The Winnie-Stowell Lions Club is hosting a community social featuring Scott Campbell, East Chambers School Superintendent, telling the story of the schools reaction to the pandemic from the very beginning to today and on to plans for the future.

the Bearkats took over on offense, but a fumble gave the Jackrabbits another chance. They wasted little time in capitalizing on the turnover and took a 7-0 lead over the Bearkats. The rest of the

first quarter was a defensive battle as the quarter ended 7-0 in favor of the Jackrabbits. Sam Houston’s offense came alive in the second quarter and scored on a three play 56 yard drive to tie

the score at 7 apiece. A missed Jackrabbit field goal provided another opportunity for the Kats to score and they held a 14-7 advantage at the end of the lightning delayed half. Sam Hous-

contained a nasty rain with variable winds with ultimately sunshine at the end of the game, an almost hour long lightning delay, a three minute halftime, and suspense down to the last play.

Sam Houston won the toss, but elected to defer to the second half. South Dakota was stopped on their first possession, and ton added a field goal in the third quarter, but SDSU was able to find the endzone once again at the start of the fourth to cut the Bearkats lead to 17-14. After trading possessions a few times, the Jackrabbits were able to break off a long run for a touchdown to take the lead 21-17. With 5:41 left in the game, the Bearkats marched down the field and scored a touchdown with 0:16 left on the game clock. A missed extra point made the score 23-21 in favor of the Bearkats. The Jackrabbits had two trick hook and ladder plays left in them, but neither one was able to get them into field goal position and the Kats won the game 23-21 and the celebration began.

By Wade Thibodeaux The annual Marsh Fest held a team roping this past weekend, May 1416, 2021 with around 800 teams participating before a champion was awarded. The annual event was tweaked just a little this year due to Covid-19 gathering

restrictions that were still in place when the event is normally held at the first part of March. Marsh Fest plans on being back at full capacity next year with vendors, calling contests, entertainment, and more.

by Wade Thibodeaux What a weekend!!!!!. I know, I know.......I started last week's column with the exact same words, but before you start thinking that I have lost my mind or that you are reading some rerun from the days of the Dallas TV show(Remember when Bobby died, but it was just a dream the next season), let me explain.

If you remember last week's column, I detailed all of the functions that I had to do the following weekend(which is now being referred to as last weekend in this column). All of those events happened and then some. Thursday evening was pretty tame as I went and took pictures of a scout troop and because of the fact that we had so much other stuff happen, that article will have to get pushed to next week's paper, but I promise you that I will get it into the paper. Friday was an office day until that evening when I attended a golf tournament that featured a helicopter golf ball drop. It's a pretty easy concept to grasp, 500 golf balls are numbered and then sold for a chance to win some

cash. Closest three balls to the hole after all 500 of them fall a couple hundred feet from a helicopter wins the money. I don't think that I would want to be the guy leaning out of the helicopter dropping the balls, but hey, somebody's gotta do it. That little gig was followed by a full night of rodeo photography. I'm not really sure if I like these new fangled cameras with no film. It sure is nice to be able to take a bunch of pictures without paying for film and developing, but it also causes a lot of work on the back end of things. It was 1:30 am on Saturday morning before I was finished processing the 1000 or so pictures that I had taken Friday night.

I have to admit that I wasn't out of bed very bright and early Saturday morning because I was tired(or, so I thought I was tired), but I did manage to get to the office by about 10:00 am. and get a little more work accomplished. Saturday evening, I had to go and eat that ribeye steak that the Walker County Fair Scholarship Committee

cooks every year and then attend some more rodeo action. I really didn't need to go to the rodeo for pictures because I had about a 1000, but I like rodeo and I had a camera with me and I messed around a little and shot about 400 more rodeo pictures.

I left the rodeo and drove about three hours to Frisco, Texas(Around Denton, Tx) and was able to crawl in bed before 1:00 am. I couldn't sleep in the next morning because I had to drive over to the stadium and attend a photographers meeting for last minute instructions about where we could stand and where we couldn't stand in order to shoot pictures for the National Championship FCS Division 1 football game. It's kind of strange playing football in the Spring, but that's what happens when the Fall season gets delayed due to Covid. I also want to go on record as saying that shooting pictures in the rain is not really much fun and it's kinda hard on your camera equipment, but somehow over the next five hours I was able to squeeze off another 1000 frames.

I also learned something very important at this football game. I actually didn't drive my vehicle to the game, I had a quasi uber driver that dropped me off at the media entrance. So, my beloved Sam Houston Bearkats are playing for the

National Championship, it's raining constantly with the wind changing directions every time you find a dry spot to get beside something that offers a little protection, and about 10 minutes into the second quarter, the referee stops the game because of a lightning strike in the area.

Now, here is where I learned something. The instructions given were to exit the stadium and return to your vehicle until the game would resume play. Hello........I don't have a vehicle to take cover in. I also learned that people don't follow instructions very well.

About 25 percent of the people exited the stadium and the other 75 percent hit the concession stand and basically bought them out of beer.

and we were able to stay in the press box, tunnels, garages where equipment was kept, basically anywhere we were protected. Now, being soaking wet and watching a football game is one thing, but being soaking wet and doing nothing for about 45 minutes is something altogether different. I don't mind getting wet, but I hate being in wet clothes and waiting for them to dry out.

Finally, play resumed, we were all able to get back to work, and by the time that the Bearkats had won the National Championship, the sun had poked through the clouds and I was almost dry. At that point, I really didn't care if I had any clothes on at all(I'm sure others would care), we had won the National Championship for the first time in

history and I was there to witness it firsthand. I snuck across the Oklahoma border to challenge the one armed bandits that night and was able to collapse in bed about Midnight. Monday morning it's up and at em because I have a three hour drive and then newspapers to put together, as well as processing all of those pictures from the game. It's now almost Midnight on Monday night and I'm just about finished.

Remember the moral of the story.......either drive your own car to the football stadium or learn to drink beer. Either way, you are good with the powers that be at the stadium in case of a lightning delay. EAT EM UP KATS....... let's go win another one next year. Till next time, I'm........

BIG BEND BY KAYAK, BIKE OR HIKING BOOTS

When Charlie Angell’s father died, he left ten acres of land and a modest house that eventually ended up being owned by Charlie. The property was fifteen miles west of Presidio.

Charlie had a construction business in Florida at the time, but he took some time off to go see what he had acquired.

“It was just a shell,” says Charlie, “It had no insulation, no dry wall, no plumbing, no toilet. I’d fly out and spend two days working on the house then explore the Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park for a couple of days and just got more and more fascinated with the mountains and the Rio Grand River and I started buying books on the history of the area.

I hired some guides to show me around and after a while I decided I could do the guiding myself, thinking that would be a lot more fun that beating my head on the wall in Miami, being in traffic all day long and handling 50 plus employees.

So I sold the business in 2008 and became a Big Bend guide.”

He started a business that offers hiking, biking and river trips. It is well equipped.

“I’ve got 50 or so canoes,

kayaks and rafts, couple dozen mountain bikes, several vehicles, all sorts of stuff. I did start piecemeal; you know, start small and work your way up. When I sold my business in Florida I was able to use a lot of the money from the sale to get my new business started.”

River trips, some overnight, are the most popular.

“The most favorite time of year to come is the spring.

Plants are blooming and it’s very pretty in this desert country with cacti flowers and bluebonnets. The river is generally really low but it’s still do-able and fun. The best time to have some real excitement on the water is the end of our rainy season which is July, August and September, even into November sometimes the water is at its highest and that’s when you get the best waves and rapids and swiftest and deepest currents or if you just want to float on a raft you can.”

I asked Charlie what in his opinion is the most beautiful spot in the Big Bend.

“Probably Santa Elena Canyon,” he said with no hesitation. “It has high walls with colorful strata that makes you appear to be going

downhill. It’s really majestic.

We do trips on the Devil’s River, which is absolutely life-changing beautiful.

It has Dolan Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls in Texas, a mini Niagara Falls.”

Charlie now lives at Redford, with a population of 85. It’s right on the river between Presidio and the Big Bend Park. He likes having city water and is president of Redford’s water board. Charlie describes Redford as a sleepy quiet ghost town. He has converted an old church into a 5-room hotel. He says there are advantages to hiring a guide.

“Time is valuable. When you have just a few days to spend, hire a guide. It’s well worth it. You’ll see secret places that no one else knows about.”

Thirty individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, May 9 and Saturday, May 15. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. I started to put on a white dress shirt, which I had already worn briefly, and noticed the inside of the collar looked dirty. I showed it to my wife and began to complain that the cleaning service had not done a very good job. She looked at it and replied, “Are you sure you’re doing a good job of washing your neck?”

James was married to his loving wife Beverly Margarette Syphrett for 47 years. He cherished her dearly from the day he met her.

Well, I did it. I finally got thrown in Facebook jail this week. I’ve only gotten a warning one time in the past, so I was a little shocked when I glanced down at my phone and had a notification that my account was suspended for 24 hours.

What did I do you ask? I commented on a video of a prank pulling husband, “I’m afraid I would ki!! Him”.

I put exclamation points for the L so as to not get in

great-grandchildren.

James Earl Weaver had been a life-long Chambers County farmer and rancher since 1947.

He and his wife Belle, live in Winnie, Texas.

James’ family to this area goes back as far as 1831 when Andrew Weaver and his wife, Julia, settled in the area north of Hankamer, Texas. Here in the central part of Chambers County the family history of farming and ranching began. James and his two sons, Jimmy and Gary, farmed and ranched with him for a few years in the early 1970s.

James Weaver loved being a farmer and rancher from the beginning. He always said, “You don’t get anything out of life and its bounty if you don’t put forth the effort”.

He also loved his favorite hobby as an airplane pilot.

He would wake up early in the morning and go crank up his plane to fly over and check his rice fields and cattle before the work hands made it to work. He would even take them for a

trouble again. But this made me laugh. A lot.

Then in typical Christy fashion, it made me think. Of how the world is changing.

Of how the world is getting soft. How we can’t joke.

How others opinions of what we said, and how we meant it, can have repercussions in our own worlds. Not just on social media.

Look, I get it. There are some algorithms set up, that flagged my statement as a perceived violent threat.

The one word. Social media companies across the nation have been spending time in front of congress on what they can do to stop violence.

Like them or hate them, social media platforms have a huge influence. On everything.

But what I also get, is that I was judged as being violent, because someone didn’t know me, and made a judgement based on one word I said. One word. How often have we all been guilty of judging someone, based

off of one thing?

Society isn’t a computer algorithm, yet all too often we pass judgement on others with zero factual base as to what actually happened, or was said, just like a computer?

One person can say one thing, and when taken incorrectly, they are judged forever. They may have said it 30 years ago, but someone somewhere is going to pull that up and judge them by it.

Maybe a computer algorithm is a better choice than a human. I know what words to avoid. I know what context to steer clear of. I now know if I say ki!! It’s picked up.

But what about the things we have zero issue with right now, that someone decides later is harmful, offensive, or judgement worthy? That happens daily! And often it’s with humans, not computers.

I truly believe the biggest threat to the political world of today, is no one is fault free, and when a person decides to run for office, their past

James was awarded the honor of Young Farmer of the Year in 1964 by the Texas Farm Bureau Association.

James was a strong advocate of conservation of the land and management practices. He served on the Trinity Bay Soil and Water Conservation District as a board member for 43 years.

James was awarded the Pioneer Farmer of the Year in 2018 by the Texas Rice Festival. It was one of the most exciting days of his life.

James was also a concerned person for the youth of Hankamer and surrounding areas where he set aside time for the Boy Scouts of America. well as a director for the Farm and Home Association (FHA) in Liberty, Texas.

James Earl had a long wonderful life filled with good years along with a lot of hard work. He loved life and enjoyed his family and friends. He visited all of them as much as he could and truly loved to be with them all. James also loved to play dominoes but beware if you were his partner or opponent… he was tricky and would always give you that big smile if he had you in a corner…

A gathering of Mr. Weaver’s family and friends was held at 12:00 p.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 14, 2021, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 315 Buccaneer Drive, Winnie, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. His interment followed at Abshire Cemetery, Hankamer.

You may know a fisherman caught a record bluefin tuna in the Gulf weighing 870 pounds.

It took ¬¬almost nine hours for Troy Lancaster to fight it to the boat and get it aboard.

It was ten feet long.

But before grabbing your Snoopy Rod and Zebco 202 and calling Woody’s in Port Aransas, where Lancaster booked his 150-mile trip to fame and food, there’re some things you need to know.

Large bluefin tuna are highly regulated.

There’s confusion on whether the season is still open. If so, a permit and more red tape than the length of Lancaster’s catch are involved. A Gulf poundage limit may have been met, automatically closing the season.

And then there are processing fees.

We’re not told how many cans of tuna fish that’ll make, but it may require a new pantry for the Lancasters. Or a new freezer for the tuna steaks. Makes me hungry just thinking about it! I wonder if Manuel’s still has tuna steaks on their menu.

There’s other saltwater fishing news, too.

The commercial shrimp season in both Texas and federal waters out to 200-nautical miles closed May 15. This allows brown shrimp to grow larger.

The season’s re-opening in Texas waters has not yet been set

by TPWD. Ongoing research is being conducted to aid in determining it.

But there’s good news that the private red snapper season for anglers fishing from their own boats will open in state and federal wa-

ters on June 1. The forhire season is federally set and continues to be regulated by them.

Bag limits are unchanged and remain at two snappers in federal waters and four in Texas waters. The two caught in federal waters count in the state’s four-fish limit. Minimum length limits are 16-inches in federal waters and 15-inches in Texas waters.

Gulf species bite better in warmer months. And that leads in to the beginning of the popular CCA-Texas S.T.A.R. tournament from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Officially, May 29-September 6.

Claud loved the interaction of all his customers and friends who would come and gather around the coffee bar and discuss the week’s happenings.

He sorely missed those conversations and camaraderie around the coffee bar.

Claud was a man of many talents. He worked many jobs in his younger years to make a living for his family, from nights working the Railroad Bridge, to driving the High Island School Bus, and he started a lawn mowing business out of a small building in our back yard.

He had mowed lawns up and down the Bolivar Peninsula.

In 1955, he opened Claud’s Outboard Service to the public selling Evinrude motors, boats, and trailers.

He received Diamond Club awards over the years for his excellence in sales. He was well known throughout Galveston, Harris, Chambers and Jefferson Counties also bordering Louisiana.

Claud was also very active in our local community affairs.

He served on the High Island School Board for eleven years. He also served with the Red Cross Knight Companion, San Felipe Conclave Constantine, and Appendant Orders for years. He was on the Board of Directors of Texas First Bank when they opened in Crystal Beach; President of Gilchrist Community Service; Managing Guide for Gulf Supply’s Duck Hunting Camp; a member of the Chamber of Commerce; and he served on the Bolivar Blueprint Steering Committee after Hurricane Ike. His business, Claud’s Inc., won the Award for Best Business.

Claude was raised a Master Mason in Anahuac Lodge #995 in Anahuac, Texas, on

March 22, 1951. On August 20, 1957, he was granted a demit to enable him to be a Charter member of WinnieStowell Lodge #1377. He has outlived all the other charter members of our lodge. Claud served that first year as our Junior Warden; then Senior Warden; and Worshipful Master in 19591960. He served as Treasurer of the lodge for many years, as well as Chaplain. Claud received his first-Class A Ritualistic Certificate in 1965 and his Life Certificate in 1991. He was honored with the Golden Trowel Award, the highest award at the local level, from Winnie-Stowell Lodge in 1996 and was presented his fifty- and sixty-year awards from there as well. Claud served his District 107 as District Instructor for many years as he helped all the lodges in our district with their ritualistic work. Claud served his Grand Lodge also as District Deputy Grand Master in 1970 of District 107 and numerous Grand Lodge Committees.

He was appointed Grand Junior Steward of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas in 2005 and Chairman of Petitions of Lodges UD in 2008.

He and the love of his life, Joy, served in the Order of the Eastern star, being initiated in Winnie-Stowell Chapter 1076 on November 4, 1962. He served in many offices including five times as Worthy Patron with his wife and daughter, Donna, and others. Winnie-Stowell Chapter consolidated with Anahuac Chapter #649 in 1993 and were presented their fifty-year membership certificates in 2012. He and Joy served on many Grand Chapter committees also.

Claud joined the Beaumont York Rite Bodies in May 1960 which includes Beaumont Chapter #188, Beaumont Council #126, and Beaumont Commandery

#38. He was a thirty-twoyear member of the Red Cross of Constantine and held offices in that branch of masonry.

Claud received his degrees in the Galveston Scottish Rite Bodies in 1986 and in 2003 he was invested by the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite as Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. In 2009, he was elevated to the Thirty-third Degree Inspector General Honorary. He served in many offices of the Lodge of Perfection, Chapter Rose Croix, Council of Kadosh, and Consistory and was proud to be on the 16th and 24th degree teams.

As you can see, Claud Kahla was and is a brother whom all respected, truly a mason’s mason.

He was an avid hunter; an amazing muskrat trapper; outdoorsman; golfer; and was quite a bowler. We spent many years with family at deer leases during Thanksgiving and after Christmas!

Survivors include his loving wife of seventy-four years, Iris Joy Kahla; children, Laura Kahla Polk and her husband, David, of Brazoria, Texas; Donna Kahla Sliger, of Houston, Texas; and Debby Kahla, of High Island, Texas; grandchildren, Reanna Polk Gryseels and husband, Tim, of Dardenne Prairies, Missouri; Kristen Harrington Watkins and husband, Drew, of Prosper, Texas; Kelly Sliger McKenzie, of Gustine, Texas; and granddaughterin-law, Rena Slinger, of Hamilton, Texas; greatgrandchildren, Hunter and Brenna Gryseels; Haden, Kahla, and Connor Watkins; and Presley Sliger; and brother, Kyle Kahla and wife, Ann. He is preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Vernon Kahla; brothers, Earl Kahla and George Kahla;

sister-in-law, Gwyn Kahla; and grandson, Douglas Wayne Sliger.

Mr. Kahla’s funeral service will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at the Kahla Family Home, 2117 Clara Kahla Road, High Island, under the direction of Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie.

His interment will follow at Claud Kahla Family Cemetery, High Island, with a reception at the Kahla Family Home to follow the interment.

Roy Myers, 60, of Winnie, died Wednesday, May

12, 2021. He was born on December 6, 1960, in Roanoke, Louisiana, to Luthy Mary Lantz and Lawrence Myers.

Roy Myers was a simple and loving man that loved his family and friends more than anything in the world. He was a hard worker who enjoyed traveling the country with most of his brothers working in cooling towers. There was always a brotherly rivalry of who worked harder and better at doing their jobs, which lead to many stories of fun and excitement. He was definitely the life of any party, always having that smile to lighten up anyone’s day. He loved bass fishing, Cajun music and dancing, and was an excellent handyman. And at the end of a long, hard day, he enjoyed a nice, strong cup of coffee and his scratch off tickets. His imprint on life will be remembered as the son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friends who was always there to lend a helping hand and to make everyone smile with no effort. He will be truly missed.

Survivors include his mother, Luthy Myers; brother, Eldon Lee Myers, Sr. of Winnie; sisters, Stephanie Trahan and her husband, John, of Bronson and Ellen Fountain of Kirbyville; brothers, Lonnie Myers of Hillister; Michael Myers and his wife, Lesa, of Winnie; and Bruce Myers of Midland; nineteen nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Myers; brothers, Danny Lee Myers and Lambert Ray Myers, Sr.; and brother-in-law, James Edward Fountain.

A gathering of Mr. Myers’ family and friends was held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 16, 2021, at Broussard’s, 134 W. Buccaneer, Winnie. His funeral service was 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 17, 2021, at Broussard’s, with his interment following at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie.
