Winnie Library Holds Ribbon Cutting

A ribbon cutting was held for the new library in Winnie last Monday.

By Wade Thibodeaux The Juanita Hargraves Memorial Branch of the Chambers County Library held a ribbon cutting last Monday, May 3, 2021 and they are open for business.

They are located along State Highway 124 adjacent to the East Chambers Primary School and across Fear Road from the newly constructed East Chambers Elementary School. This makes the second newly constructed library for Chambers County in the last five years. Chambers County Librarian Valerie Jensen stated "Libraries are central to our community, and to have new, state of

the art facilities with quality programs and spaces makes them even more inviting!

The new library in Winnie includes a meeting room which will be available for reservation by the public, and a room designated for storytime and after school programs".

Starting May 4, all library system branches will be open 100% to the public. The library will still comply with safety protocols by having staff/public do health screenings upon entry. Masks are encouraged, and social distancing required.

Books that are returned will be quarantined for one week.

The pig show was as competitive this year as it is every year at the Chambers County Youth Livestock Show.

by Wade Thibodeaux Timber cutters will be timber cutters and cows will be cows. So, you know that I bought a set of cows recently and they are located on a place that's about an hour and a half away from me when I'm in Huntsville and about three hours away when I'm in Winnie. I went up and checked on them the other day and when I drove into the place and started honking the horn, cows started pouring out of the woods and headed for the truck.

Okay, the cows are already cube broke and I should be able to call them together for a meeting without too much trouble. I gave them their little snacks, counted them to make sure that everybody was there, and told them that I would see them soon. A couple of weeks go by and then I get the phone call. I had a cow out on a neighbors

place. He ran her back towards my place and then a couple of days later..... another phone call. It seems as though this time the whole herd was out and running around the countryside.

In my conversation with my neighbor this time, he shed a little light on the problem. He casually mentioned that some timber had recently been harvested from another adjoining neighbors property and it just so happens that the timber harvested property adjoins my Southern fence boundary. He also mentioned a young man that had chased the cows back onto my place and was so kind as to give me the young man's name and phone number. I immediately called him and he told me that there was a gate that was partially propped open and that there was a spot where the

fence was totally knocked down by some of the tree tops that had been left by the timber cutters. Timber cutters will do what timber cutters do. They are not paid to worry about fences, or anything else for that matter, they are paid to remove sellable timber and whatever else happens is just an "Oh well....live with it".

Now, cows will also do what cows will do and if they find an open gate or a knocked down fence, then they will wander through it. And, once one cow finds such an experience, she will return a few days later with a few more and then within just a matter of a short period of time the entire herd will be grazing on new territory. Now, these cows are not hungry by any stretch of the imagination. They are in belly deep bermuda grass on my place, but cows are basically lazy and want the tender grass instead of the tougher grass and so instead of eating the tough grass on my place and letting the new tender grass grow where they have grazed, it's just so much easier to wander over to the neighbors

Of course all of this happened at the absolute worst time for me and I was trying to figure out how to work this extra trip and fence repair into my schedule when a small miracle happened. I had just asked

an ag teacher from the area the day before if he knew of anybody(maybe a student) in the area that might be looking for a little extra ranch work and it turns out that the nice young man that put the cows back into my pasture does ranch work for a living. He's patching the fence, I'm writing my column and all is good in

THE CORSICANA LEGEND OF ROPE WALKER

The legend: In 1884 a man with a wooden leg carrying a cast iron cook stove was trying to cross a tightrope stretched between two buildings in downtown Corsicana when he lost his balance and fell, suffering painful injuries.

Near death he mentioned he was a Jew. A Jewish merchant was summoned and prayed with the crippled acrobat. He later died and was buried in the Hebrew cemetery in Corsicana. No one ever knew his name so his gravestone carries the words ROPE WALKER. It’s a story repeated many times when Texans start talking about interesting legends. It’s strange that not much research had been done on the story until a man from Acton, Massachusetts, Jim Yarin got hold of it. He spent years investigating the legend and wrote a book about it. The title is ROPE WALKER A TEXAS JEWISH HISTORY MYSTERY. It’s available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other sources.

Jim Yarin told me by telephone that he heard about the story while doing his family genealogy. One branch of his family was in Waco and Corsicana.

“I went to the Corsicana

Hebrew Cemetery listing in Find A Grave, the data base of gravestones, and came across the gravestone of this fellow named Rope Walker. That was about 15 years ago. I tried to find out everything that was said about Rope Walker and there has been a lot. I thought it would be pretty nifty if I could figure out some details about this longtime mystery so I took a shot at it.”

The book he wrote is nearly 400 pages and contains a lot about the Jewish community in Corsicana.

It also details another Texas legend about Black Diamond, a killer elephant.

Jim’s book is well documented and written in a scholarly manner. “I can spend a lot of time looking into ship manifests and so forth to find the right thing I’m looking for. It takes a lot of time but the rewards are usually worth it.”

About the identity of the tightrope walker, Jim thought it was unreasonable that a guy with one leg who walked on a tightrope should be unknown. “So looking into this seemed to be about the same kind of research I had been doing in genealogy. I wanted to find out the answer to this longtime mystery.

The

more I looked into it, the more interesting it became.

Some say this guy was a stove salesman but I don’t think so. He was an entertainer. He had traveled to Corsicana and a number of other places I don’t want to ruin the legend by revealing his name in the book, but I’m sure other people will think it’s unfortunate that I’ve ruined a really good legend.”

Jim says it is a true story. “To back that up I have 1,126 footnotes, 2 indexes and 3 appendixes.

I found out his name and all about this guy. I’ve been researching this for 5 years since I discovered his identity. I went to Corsicana twice and have been in touch with a number of people there. The book has a lot of answers but it also asks a lot of questions.

One is why didn’t someone figure this out before me?”

Thirty-Eight individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, April 25 and Saturday, May 1. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Sentence Announced in Child Porn Case in Chambers County An Old River resident was sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing a large collection of child pornography, which included photos and videos of children engaged in sexual acts. Most of the children’s ages ranged from infancy and toddlers to pre-

teens. James Zackry Duff pled guilty to five charges of possession with intent to promote child pornography, as well as one charge of indecency with a child in the 344th District Court in Chambers County. He requested the court to assess punishment.

Duff received three 20-year sentences, to run consecutively one after the other, as well as two 15-year sentences and one 10-year sentence to run concurrent with the first 20-year sentence. This amounts to a 60-year prison sentence for the 33-year-old. Judge Randy McDonald became emotional from the bench in pronouncing the sentence when referencing the images and videos.

“Harming any child is always a despicable act, but the manner in which these children were sexually abused and the fact that some of these victims were babies made this case even more difficult,” said Chambers County District Attorney

Cheryl Lieck. “I want those who prey upon children to know that we are coming for them,” Lieck added.

Duff was remanded to the custody of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, who will house him until he is transferred to carry out his sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“I am so proud of our team for working on behalf of these children, and I am especially grateful for the tireless efforts of ADA Kathy Esquivel on this case,” Lieck said.

Over the course of my 54 years, I have pretty much decided my least favorite attribute in people, is the person who consistently says no. I get it, sometimes things just can’t happen.

I also get that my poor Momma dealt with my inquisitive mind like a champ and rarely said no, what she typically said was let’s think about this….. until I figured a way to make it happen or discovered I was being a nit wit to think of it to begin with.

Political worlds are not immune to this, actually

those are the ones that should practice and work on this the most. It’s the art of negotiation. It’s the ability to debate, and listen to one another’s view point. It’s the effort to accomplish what you need to, while maybe taking a less than ideal path to get there.

I’m reminded of a time when I was in sales that a client wanted to buy truck tire racks from me. My boss promptly told me we sell office furniture, we don’t sell truck tire racks. We have no source. But I wanted the sell, and have a tiny bit of a stubborn streak, so I looked at some items I sold that were metal, and low and behold…… they had a whole line of things other than lockers and science tables. They sold truck tire racks.

Suddenly the office furniture rep sold….

You see my boss didn’t forbid me to look for

them, he didn’t say I couldn’t keep looking, he said we have never sold them. I had to find the way, once I did, he said well…. Looks like we sell truck tire racks. He was a brilliant businessman.

He believed in his people.

People skills, management skills, political skills, parenting skills all have one thing in common.

People. To get the most out of people, you must allow them independent thought. Your first answer should rarely be no. To stop independent thought, and hit with constant negativity will destroy the minds of creative people. They make you appear as a dictator, not a leader.

Because human beings respond better to “how can we do this” than they ever will to “no”.

That’s just facts.

Happy Sunday peeps, a new week is upon us. I hope if you are hit with

an obstacle this week you have the gumption to press on. To find a way to make it work. To work with others, and help one another. To simply say, technically that can’t be done this way, but let’s attack this from another angle, and find a way to do it. Because consistent no’s will stifle the brain, and kill creativity. But telling a person, “let’s figure a way to do this”, will act like fertilizer to a plant…. And a brain will grow, as will the respect of others.

Stop telling me what can’t work and tell me how it can. Negotiate.

Listen. And learn from others. Never stop learning. Not from your children, your friends, your coworkers, or your constituents. The first step to personal growth is the ability to listen to a concept, other than your own.

Sundell suffered internal injuries including a lacerated liver. Doctors told him later he was within centimeters of severing an artery and bleeding out. Instead, the resilient champion spent two weeks in a medically induced coma before returning to his home in Oklahoma to begin the long journey back.

It was nearly a year to the date but Sundell returned in late July 2020 as though time had never passed, winning his first rodeo back in Sid-

ney, Iowa, and making a late-season push to finish 45th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

Now 36, Sundell has his eyes focused on a ninth NFR bid and another gold buckle.

"Guymon was my first win of the year and I'm glad to get things started," Sundell said. "The Tour points are a big incentive, as well. You darn sure need 'em, there's a ton of money to be won right at the end of the year (at the ProRodeo Tour Finale).

"So, we'll keep entering the Tour rodeos and get to the Finale and then the Finals. Then we can

go win the big money."

Sundell was thrilled with his draw in Guymon, a horse recently purchased by Dakota Rodeo.

"They hadn't gotten to buck him yet (at ProRodeos), but I watched him at Pawhuska at a ranch rodeo recently," Sundell said. "I asked them, 'When are we gonna get a dose of that one?'

"He's an outstanding horse."

Sundell earned his second Guymon championship. The first came in 2019.

After riding April 30 in Guymon, Sundell made his way back to his

ranch on the opposite end of the state where he was out working cattle on Sunday when he learned he held on for the win.

Along with a check from Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend, Sundell will improve greatly upon his current position of 30th in the world standings.

Sundell returns to action at the Daily Record Xtreme Bares and Broncs event in Ellensburg, Wash., May 14-15.

"I don't want to do anything else; I would do this the rest of my life if I could.

sels are out-eating the shad in Canyon, leading to a food shortage for the once-popular bait fish.

This started when a friend sent me an image of a young man holding what the accompanying caption said was a 23-pound striped bass caught in Canyon Lake. The fisherman was not identified.

I contacted the usual suspects when I have a mystery regarding Canyon. None of them knew who he was. Next, I called the TPWD District Inland Fisheries biologist, Patrick Ireland, figur-

ing the hot-gossip circuit would have surely reached his office. After all, that was a big fish, and something newsworthy.

Ireland hadn’t heard about that but told me of two other Canyon Lake striper chasers that had caught several larger stripers. In trying to locate them, Ireland referred me to a Canyon fishing guide named Captain Steve Nixon. That was pure gold.

Captain Steve began fishing Canyon Lake over 50 years ago.

Cowboys used to say they were horseback riding in the saddle before they could walk, and it sounds like Nixon was fishing there before or about the time he started school.

He guides anglers for practically all game fish species in Canyon Lake, except the large stripers. He doesn’t take clients for them, although he is a popular guide for other species. But he knows plenty about large striped bass.

He’s boated 25 of them over 20-pounds. When asked if it was too late this year to fish for them, he readily replied, “No.” “Some of my best

catches have come in June,” he explained.

The tactics change, however. March and April are spawning season and a productive time to fish. But as the weather warms up, striped bass go deeper.

“When they get down deep, say around 4050 feet deep, it’s easy to locate a school of large fish,” he told me.

“They’re bunched up down there.”

But last week, with all the rain and cool temperatures, stripers may not be as deep yet as they will be later. Topwater lures, though, might not be as effective as they were earlier in the spring. I looked back at the picture of the 23-pounder that started all this, and it arrived in late March or early April.

I asked Captain Steve what he uses for bait?

“I don’t use live bait unless I’m guiding people whose skills dictate it,” he replied. “I prefer jigging spoons that will get down deep. Or “striper jigs” or sometimes even saltwater swimbaits.”

He acknowledges the zebra mussels have contributed to a reduction in fish populations.
