Suspect Arrested After Altercation With Commissioner

Winnie Ducks Unlimited Hosts Annual Event

Plenty of guns were available for purchase and to win by chance at the annual Winnie Stowell DU Banquet last Saturday.

On April 22, 2021, at approximately 3:36 PM, Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to the area of Rhonda Rosa Drive and Turtle Drive in Wallisville, to a disturbance involving Commissioner Gore and the actor who was later identified as Teddy Girton of Mount Juliet, Tennessee.

The investigation revealed that Commissioner Gore had been called by a homeowner on Rhonda Rosa Drive (within Liberty County) pertaining to Girton applying unwanted asphalt to a resident’s driveway without their consent.

Commissioner Gore, being aware that individuals had been soliciting Chambers County residents for unwanted asphalt work, arrived to assist the resident and to speak with Girton about the unwanted work being conducted.

Girton became agitated with Commissioner Gore and attempted to grab Gore’s cell phone out

of his hand, which then hit the Commissioner in the head. After an argument concluded between Girton and Commissioner Gore, they both got into their vehicles and left the residence.

As they were driving south on Rhonda Rosa Drive in Chambers County, Girton intentionally rammed Commissioner Gore’s vehicle and then attempted to flee the area.

Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Troopers assisted our deputies and located the suspect, driving a 2020 Chevrolet 2500, near the intersection of FM 563 and Turtle Road in Wallisville, Texas, where Girton was detained.

Girton was cited for Assault – Misdemeanor C by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and arrested for Criminal Mischief - $2500<$30,000 – State Jail Felony by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office. Girton was transported to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office jail.

The mission at CCCWB is to work to support foster children and adoption; to meet the needs of abused and neglected children in our county; and to assist Child Protective Services (CPS) in aiding the children under their care. by Wade Thibodeaux Well, here it is Monday evening again and the last thing that I'm doing for this week's paper is writing my column. We have had this discussion before and I know as well as anybody that I'm running late because I can feel the steam coming from my editor's ears because she can't do anything until I get this column to her and that in turn makes her stay up way late.....much past my bedtime. She is gracious enough to not say anything about my tardiness, but I can still feel the steam. I had this really prophetic article in my mind that was going to really change the world and then ......squirrel......I thought of something else and lost that world changing thought and now I can't remember the first word of the process. I had a lady return my phone call to her earlier today and it took me about two minutes into

the conversation before I really realized what she was calling about. I was in the middle of an article about Veterans and was deep in thought when the phone rang and I had to ask her a couple of times who she was and why she was calling me. I finally clicked and then I had to apologize profusely and I'm sure that she thought that I was crazy. She asked if I wanted to call her back after I finished writing the article and I told her absolutely not because I would forget again and it may be a couple of weeks before I remembered to call her.

And, this was for reservations for a cabin on the river that would probably not be available tomorrow, so I'm glad that I finally got my stuff together and that she was patient enough to hang on until we worked out all of the details. It's getting really bad when I can't remember my

thoughts about having fun.

Since I can't remember the world changing thoughts, let me tell you about something that is fresh on my mind.....well, actually fresh on my finger. I can give you a really good reason to not let the dishes stack up in the sink before placing them in the dishwasher. The thought suddenly occurred to me that I MAY be a procrastinator. Last minute article......last minute putting dishes in the dishwasher......NAW, I just run out of time. I really want to do all of those things, but I just run out of time. Please .....don't go look up the definition of procrastinator. Anyway, back to my dirty dishes. I had a couple of minutes and I thought that while I had a chance I would load the dishwasher. I had placed most of the larger items into the dishwasher and was getting down to the bottom of the sink and it was mostly utensils left to be loaded into the dishwasher. I reached down and grabbed a handful of utensils and headed towards the dishwasher with them and all of a sudden I felt something moving in my hand.

I knew that it was more

than a utensil just moving under the pressure of my hand and it felt kinda soft and squishy. About that time I felt this stinging pain shoot through my index finger on my left hand and I threw the utensils and the yellowjacket that was underneath the spoon that I had picked up into the dishwasher. Utensils and wasp all landed inside the dishwasher and I guess that I had kinda squashed him when I grabbed him and he was laying there wiggling around on the opened door of the dishwasher. Without even really thinking about

it, I grabbed the door of the dishwasher and slammed it closed. Now, the wasp was inside and it gave me some time to think. I didn't want to open the door and let him fly out in the event that he was able to fly and so I just reached over with my right hand because my left hand was throbbing and turned the thing on to the wash cycle. I didn't have any washing detergent in the dishwasher, but I was going to rewash the dishes anyway, so I just gave him a little bath. An hour later, I went and opened the door to the dishwasher and not

a piece of him remained with the dishes. I put some soap in the compartment and rewashed my dishes.

I may have a sore finger for a couple of days, but I showed him who was boss. Of course, he's getting his jollies every time I hit a key on this keyboard, but my finger will heal and he won't be around to sting anybody else. Remember the moral of the story....... don't let your dishes get so deep in the sink that you can't see what is in it. Till next time, I'm.......Wade in the Shade.

THE STREETS OF DAYTON

By Tumbleweed Smith When Caroline Wadzeck was growing up in Snyder she was active in school activities and played saxophone and bassoon in the band. After earning three degrees in education and library science from Sam Houston State she went to Dayton and taught school.

“I was in education for 38 years,” says Caroline. “I was a 5th grade teacher for five, and a school librarian for thirty-three.

Being a librarian was my calling and I had a fabulous career. I loved it.”

After retiring in 2009, she became curator of Dayton’s Old School Museum and became active in other community activities. Two years ago she was elected mayor.

It was her first time to enter politics. Her husband (who also grew up in Snyder) served on Dayton’s city council twenty years ago and she attended many city council meetings, so she was familiar with how the city operates.

“I have signed up for the election this coming May and don’t have an opponent, so I guess I’m it for another two years.”

Caroline is recognized as her city’s historian and often gives talks on historical events and personalities in Dayton. Once at a state library meeting in Houston, a friend gave her a book about historic streets in Houston, how they got their names and the families for whom they were named. She was fascinated to find Caroline Street and read about how that street was named.

“It had a fascinating history and it got me to thinking about our town of Dayton. We have so many streets named for people and I wanted to know who they were.”

She started doing research and ended up writing a book.

“It’s called THE STREETS OF DAYTON, TEXAS, HISTORY BY THE BLOCK. We have 92 streets named for people. I found out about 79 of them, who they were named for. That took two years. But I also wanted to know about the streets that were not named for people. When I wrote the book we had 113 streets and I found out about all but a few. Eleven of our streets are named for World War Two soldiers from Dayton

who died in the war. I started with them. Then I wanted to know who they were and about their lives, what they looked like. So I began collecting pictures and writing biographies about each one. After a while it becomes like a treasure hunt and you just can’t stop. It became a quest for me. My husband might say it was an obsession.

But I knew that if I didn’t get this information down it was going to be lost.”

Mayor Wadzeck encourages other communities to do the same thing she did making sure that the records are kept in a library or museum.

Thirty-Five individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, April 18 and Saturday, April 24. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

Cade Staton Wins San Angelo to Vault Into Top 15 The last time Cade Staton competed at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo, the Franklin, Texas, steer wrestler had one of his career highlights, finishing second in the average and bagging nearly $8,000 a little more than

a year ago.

In his return to the San Angelo Coliseum Friday, Staton once again performed well at this rodeo somewhat close to home. So well, in fact, that his blazing, 3.8-second run in the finals gave

him the average title by one-tenth of a second.

Except he didn't know it until long after the round was over.

"When it was all set and done, I thought I had split first," Staton said. "My hazer (Shayde Etherton)

was there and yelled, 'Heck, yeah!' and gave me a fist bump. I looked at the big screen and saw I was a tenth faster than the guy (Taz Olson) I thought I split with.

Shayde asked if I was going to take a victory

lap, but I didn't know if I was supposed to. (Announcer) Boyd (Polhamus) was right there, and he didn't say anything, so I just walked out of the arena."

Staton jumped from 23rd to 10th in the latest PRCA | RAM World Standings after earning $8,204, a shot of much-needed momentum and confidence for the 28-year-old who has held his PRCA card since 2012 and earlier this month made his second appearance in the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo.

"I've been looking forward to having a big kick before the summer, so it was nice to get that big jump to get me where I wanted to be," Staton said. "I didn't do very well at other tour rodeos this winter, just placing along at some of the smaller ones. It was good to do well at a big one."

Riding FedX, a horse owned by Staton's mother-in-law, Amye Craig,

Staton made quick work of his final-round steer, making up a 0.6-second deficit entering the round.

"I just treated it like another one-header," said Staton, who won in 11.8 seconds on three head.

"I just had to blow the start out and make the best run on the steer they gave me. That's all I can control. With FedX and Shayde riding a great hazing horse, Rampage, it makes my job easy. All I have to do is work on myself."

Staton represented Sam Houston State University at the College National Finals Rodeo in 2016 and broke out soon after but managed to only nickel-and-dime his way down the ProRodeo trail.

He then put his agribusiness/agricultural business operations degree and a family connection to work and became (and still is) an oil and fuel salesman for (contd on page 4)

My wife and I were shopping and noticed two children, a brother and a sister, arguing over a chair they both wanted to sit in. The lady with them appeared to be their grandmother. She sat the little girl in one chair and her brother in the other.

Then the little girl said to her brother, “You ‘git’ what you ‘git’ and you don’t throw a fit. That’s what my teacher says!”

Cade Staton Wins San Angelo to Vault Into Top 15

Austin, Texas-based Arnold Oil Company, while still competing at smaller rodeos in the Texas Circuit.

With the family's finances in order by 2020, Staton, with advice from his wife, Katherine, decided to hit the rodeo road hard once again. With his performance in San Angelo, he might actually get a chance at a long-awaited victory lap, sooner than later.

"My wife gave me all the encouragement in the world," said Staton,

who is a father of three girls, 9, 8, and 1. "I went hard last year but didn't have the summer I wanted, but I didn't feel like it was a failure at all (he finished 26th in the final world standings). I feel comfortable going out now, and I never imagined winning a rodeo like San Angelo. This is what we were hoping would be par for the course.

I sometimes wonder what it will take to get everyone to look at everything from both sides. I mean with the argumentative climate we are all living in, at what point do we sit down and listen to one another?

This past week, the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin once again showed our division and lack of hearing one another. As a person who tries VERY hard to look at things from all angles, I struggle with this world where everyone thinks only their personal opinion is right. There is so much more happening than just a guilty verdict.

While I 100% think he was guilty, and the correct verdict was found, we are in precarious times with our judicial system. We are all guaranteed the right to a fair trial of our peers. One where they promise to be unbiased, and have not previewed so much evidence that they have already decided guilt or innocence. I don’t know how anyone could say they had not seen the horrific videos. How they could have not made a decision before ever being seated as a juror. That is where it’s scary.

In today’s world of videos at every persons fingertips, how does the judicial system keep this from happening? How do we stop people from sharing their private videos, so as to keep the public an honest unbiased jury pool? I don’t know the answers there. I know it’s scary though.

A man I knew, now passed, recorded a hit song entitled “The Snakes Crawl at Night.”

There’s truth to that.

Most readers know. It was driven home to me one night a few years ago in Dimmit County when a game warden I was visiting insisted on lighting the walk back to my truck afterwards. He said rattlesnakes were prevalent.

And spring is the time they’re most active. Turkey hunters MUST beware. My friend, Horace Gore, was once bitten on

I had a close call one spring photographing deer. While seated on a small trail where I had placed my tripod and long lens, a rattler crawled up BEHIND me. As it settled into a coil, the rattles clicked once, alerting me to its presence. It was just out of striking distance, but that ended my photo session for the day.

Another time, photographing a man rattling antlers to attract deer, I thought I had sat on a snake. It turned out to be a prickly pear pad, but that was almost worse; snakes only have TWO fangs!

A female hunter didn’t fare as well. At Happy Hour one evening, she confessed that on a turkey hunt with her parents, she decided to answer Nature’s call just before daylight. Removing necessary clothing, she proceeded. She felt what she thought was a stick poking her and moved slightly. Later, as she stepped into the shower, she let a scream that quickly brought her mother. There were two small red spots on her back side. The doctor confirmed snake bite.

She said skin sloughed off for six months afterwards. I would guess it had been a copperhead.

A lady I know well has

said if she’s ever snake bitten, it probably won’t be on the leg.

Probably the worst snakebite happened during high school years.

Kids were swimming at Chinaberry Check, a rice field irrigation canal known as being clothing optional before that was a term. As my friend climbed out on the brushy bank, a cottonmouth struck multiple times. He said it wrapped around his arm and continued striking.

He was hospitalized for weeks. Nearly died.

Missed school. Fell behind. Chinaberry Check lost its appeal …. at least at night.

One Thanksgiving, my 12-year-old son, Johnny, and I had canoed across a creek to our stand. Hunting until almost dark, we canoed back across silently. Johnny got out to pull the canoe up a little. The next things I heard were a rattle snake rattling in front of the canoe and Johnny letting out a scream. He jumped back in the canoe and ran into my arms shaking all over. I stammered out, “Did it get ya?”

“I don’t think so,” he muttered, “but it was close.” We were held prisoner in the dark as the snake continued rattling.

Other hunters heard us and shined lights on the rattler. The wrath of a frightened teenager soon took revenge.

to stick their head out the window is more dangerous than it seems. It can cause road debris to get into their eyes, nose and mouth and potentially lead to serious injuries.

3. Minimize distractions.

Erie Insurance found in its recent national survey that 5% of respondents are distracted by their dog when driving. To avoid disruptions, keep them in the back seat and never allow your dog to sit on your lap. Use a barrier to avoid a dog making its way to the front, and avoid feeding and playing with your dog while driving.

Tips for traveling with a cat: 1. Use a proper carrier. Cats become easily stressed when traveling.

To keep them safe and comfortable, you’ll want to place them in a sturdy carrier that provides

enough room for them to move around.

2. Practice safe exits.

Only let your cat out of the carrier when parked.

Make sure your cat is wearing a harness and leash before exiting the vehicle. Should your cat get startled and run, a harness and leash will allow you to rein them in, keeping them out of harm’s way.

General tips for traveling with pets: 1. Never leave a pet in a hot car. Leaving any kind of pet alone in a vehicle is extremely dangerous. According to the Humane Society of the Unites States, a vehicle’s temperature can quickly exceed 120 degrees in warm weather, leaving your pet at risk of brain damage, heat stroke and suffocation.

2. Be prepared in case of emergency. Should

anything go wrong, plan to contact a nearby vet.

As further required by Local Government Code Section 271.049(b)(4)-(6), the following additional information is provided: (A) The current principal of all outstanding debt obligations of the County is $51,335,000.

(B) The current combined principal and interest required to pay all outstanding debt obligations of the County on time and in full is $61,726,406.

(C) The maximum principal amount of the certificates to be authorized is $49,000,000.

(D) The estimated combined principal and interest required to pay the certificates to be authorized on time and in full is approximately $69,328,445.

(E) The estimated interest rate for the certificates to be authorized is 2.442434%.

(F) The maximum maturity date of the certificates to be authorized is March 1, 2051.

Pursuant to Texas Local Government Code Section 271.049, an election on the question of the issuance of the certificates will be called if before the time tentatively set for the authorization and issuance or if before the authorization of the certificates, the County Clerk receives a petition signed by at least five percent of the qualified voters of the County protesting the issuance of the certificates, the County may not issue the certificates unless the issuance is approved at an election ordered, held and conducted in the manner provided for bond elections. /s/ Jimmy Sylvia County Judge Chambers County, Texas
