Show of Support for Local Judge Scheduled

Judge Devillier has spent the last couple of months in and out of the hospital and is facing a bone marrow transplant as soon as a donor is found.

A bar-b-que or fish dinner will be served

from 11:00 am. until it's all gone or 3:00 pm. and a live and silent auction will be held with the live auction beginning at 2:00 pm.

Food plates will be available as inside dining or as a drive thru at the rear of the Community Building.

A car show is scheduled in the park behind the Community Building with entry fees of only $30 with trophies awarded for top prizes.

In addition to the car show, inflatables will be set up for the little ones to enjoy and a washer tournament is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm..T shirts commemorating the event will be available for sale. A mobile blood drive donation station will be located in the park for anyone wanting to contribute

in Judge Devillier's name. A classic car parade with Chambers County Sheriff's Office escorts will proceed along State Highway 124 and will enter the park around 9:30 am. with the doors to the Community Building opening at 10:00 am.

by Wade Thibodeaux Okay, it's after 9:00 pm. on Monday night and I'm just getting around to writing my column. Most of you are thinking that I'm supposed to write my column on Sunday night and you would be right, but there is a legitimate reason for me being this late in the writing department. I just really did not know what I wanted to write about this week. I had several thoughts as the week progressed, but I just never felt completely compelled to stop what I was doing and sit down and bang out a column based on that thought at that moment.

I remember being at a Texas Press Association conference one year and they were honoring a journalist for his many accomplishments and as most of these things go, it was post mortem and the poor fellow wasn't even there to hear everyone bragging about him. However, there is one thing that I remember that the speaker said about the Honoree. He said that the Honoree was the type of journalist that

sat down and wrote his column first and then went on to write about the wrecks and other happenings. Evidently, I ain't that fellow. I either have nothing to write about, or I have so much stuff that it gets all jumbled up in my little brain space and I can't pick a topic.

However, I did get a two week Spring break as East Chambers was on Spring break two weeks ago and Huntsville was on Spring break last week. Now, it's been a long time since I was in school and you are wondering to yourself why I'm taking Spring break. Well, I do have a daughter that had her last Spring break last week as she is a Senior at Huntsville High School and that's good enough reason for me to celebrate. The week before that was East Chambers Spring break and the town was pretty much dead with all of the students and faculty skipping town, so I pretty much had Spring break during that week as there just wasn't much news.

That was also the week that I was able to sneak away for a little fishing trip and that was certainly welcomed.

The only bad part of this two week Spring break is the Monday morning hangover after not really being pushed for a couple of weeks. Man it was hard to get out of bed when that alarm went off and I actually had to get up and do something. Oh well, I'll get a good night's sleep tonight and will be back in the groove tomorrow.

I'll tell you a Sonic story before I shut it down for the night and the week in the newspaper putting together department. I pulled into Sonic one afternoon for my daily 44 ounce jug of sweet nectar Diet Coke and I noticed that the line at the drive thru was pretty long. Before I could do anything different, a car pulled up behind me and I was pretty much stuck in line. I soon realized that the reason that the line seemed so long was because a fellow in a truck was pulling a boat through the drive thru and it just seemed like there were a lot of vehicles.

He was at the menu station and I thought "this ain't gonna be good" because usually when they stare at the menu for quite a while it seems that they take longer to place their order. To further complicate matters, I could see a pair of feet

alongside the passenger side of the truck and I thought that maybe they had gotten out to get something out of the back of the truck and just hadn't climbed back inside yet. Nope, these feet were walking alongside the truck as the vehicle made its way to the ordering station. At the ordering station, he kept looking over at the feet on the outside of the truck and then would order one item and then look back at the feet and then turn and look at the ordering screen and order one more item. This

went on for a while and then he finally pulled up towards the window. The feet then decided to leave the vehicle that they had been following and skipped across the parking lot to a motorhome that was parked alongside the adjacent street. The fellow paid for his food, loaded several bags from the window into his truck and then pulled around and parked next to the motorhome. In my mind, there were several different ways to handle this situation.

First, everyone in both vehicles could have walked up

to the nice little tables under the front of Sonic and had a nice leisurely lunch without ever going through the drive thru or second, the fellow could have pulled the truck and boat through the special made for trailers drive thru and taken his time without delaying the eight cars that were behind him, or they could have gone to McDonalds.

I guess that two weeks of Spring break did very little for my patience quotient. Till next time, I'm.........Wade in the Shade.

THE LICENSE PLATE MAN

By Tumbleweed Smith I met Jesse Perez at a car and motorcycle swap shop in Fort Worth 6 years ago.

Among the hundreds of vendor booths, Jesse’s seemed to be the most popular. For one thing, Jesse is friendly and outgoing and has a personality that makes you want to be around him.

Secondly, I found out there is a great demand for old license plates and Jesse is the man who has them. I did a column on Jesse back then and for some reason readers thought I had the license plates. Hardly a month goes by that I don’t get a phone call or email from someone looking for a certain old license plate.

I keep Jesse’s contact info handy and pass it along. He lives at 2214 St. Anthony in San Antonio. His phone number is 210 532-7456.

Jesse and I recently reconnected and I found out he is into the license plate business fulltime. He previously worked at a retail establishment for 18 years but lost his job when the business was downsizing.

That was fine with Jesse.

In the past he had been going to swap meets and car shows on weekends.

Now he can go anytime he

wants and can take care of customers who contact him.

Jesse has been collecting license plates since 1960.

He has a lot of them. “I think I have more than 200,000 for sure,” says Jesse. “I buy collections of old plates all the time.

I keep them in my garage and in portable buildings around my house.” He sells his plates to people all over the country and beyond.

Residents of Germany love Texas plates.

One man called, ordered some plates, and said he would come by and pick them up.

“He drove all the way from New Hampshire to pick up some license plates.”

Jesse has plates from every state and Texas plates from every year since 1917. He gets several calls every day. “The most expensive plate that I sold was $3,300 and the customer bought 2 of them the same day. It was a special plate for that particular customer who said he was tired of looking for this plate and heard that I might have it. He said he has a lot of money. When they say they have a lot of money you know they have a lot of money. They just want to know if you have

the plate or can get it. I had another customer that told me he was looking for this particular plate and would pay me $10,000. I had that plate he was looking for. But I didn’t sell it. He passed away the following week.”

A lot of people want a plate from their vehicle’s model year. “This week a customer had a 1968 truck and he wanted a 68 plate but with the number 68 in it.

Some people want a plate with their lucky number on it. Some might tell me their car has a 327 engine in it and they want the engine size in the number. I’m usually able to accommodate people looking for a certain plate. License plates go with everything.

People just like license plates for all kinds of reasons.”

Thirty-Two individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, March 14 and Saturday, March 20. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

TxDOT Launches New Campaign to Stop Pedestrian Deaths

Chambers County Sheriff's Office Reports Industrial Accident Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that at 12:30 a.m. on March 21, 2021, Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Deputies as well as the Mont Belvieu Police Department, Fire Department and EMS responded to an industrial accident just outside of the city limits of Mont Belvieu near FM 1942 and Hatcherville Road.

Two linemen were working on a high voltage transmission line, approximately 106’

off the ground in a metal lift basket attached to the jib of the crane, when the basket became unstable and separated from the crane and the basket fell to the ground.

Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Blake Sylvia pronounced one worker deceased at the scene and the other was flown by life flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston; at the time of this release he is in critical condition.

As spring approaches, more and more Texans will take to the streets, and TxDOT has an important message for both drivers and pedestrians: watch out for each other.

State officials warn that pedestrian deaths are continuing to rise in Texas, and now account for 1 in 5 of all traffic fatalities. In 2019 alone, 5,975 traffic crashes involving pedestrians occurred in Texas, resulting in 669 deaths, a 5% increase in fatalities over the previous year.

Another 1,317 people were seriously injured.

“From 2015 to 2019, traffic crashes claimed the lives of 3,150 pedestrians,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass.

“To reach our goal of zero deaths on Texas roadways we need all drivers to obey the rules of the road, stay alert and take responsibility for looking out for pedestrians, and for pedestrians to follow safety tips.”

Since 2015, TxDOT has spent $153 million in federal and state funding to upgrade sidewalks, curbs and striping for pedestrian accessibility, safety and mobility. In addition, during that same time, TxDOT awarded $116 million in grant funding to support more than 120 locally sponsored projects that provide safe routes to schools, multiuse pathways, sidewalks and bike paths in rural and small urban areas.

Crash reports from law enforcement indicate the two leading causes for pedestrian fatalities are: 1) pedestrians failing to follow traffic safety laws and being struck when crossing streets and roadways, and 2) motorists failing to yield the right of way, driving distracted or driving too fast. Alcohol also is a factor in pedestrianrelated crashes, deaths and injuries.

"Simmer Down"

The pot of spaghetti was about to boil over when my wife put a scoop of butter in it. The boiling pot “simmered down” and continued to cook with no further incident. I smiled at her and said, “Wow! Oil on the water really works!”

In Psalms 45 and Hebrews 1 the Bible speaks of being anointed with the oil of gladness. Most take this as a reference to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Have you reached a boiling point in some area of your life? I know of nothing that helps me “simmer down” like the presence of the Holy Spirit and His oil of gladness.

This weekend I had the dreaded chore of going to that big box store. I won’t name it, but I will tell you I don’t like going. But I had an online order that needed returning, and dove in at 2 pm on a Saturday.

My first thought in the parking lot was, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! As there was someone sitting at the door, blocking traffic with their hazards on. Guess they didn’t need to park.... insert eye roll.

Then I go in and remember why I hate

this place. The majority of customers were just rude. The employees not a heck of a lot better. So I make my way to the pharmacy to get bandaids for my Mom, who busted her knee open.

I’m still grumbling to myself, and going about trying to find what I need, and here is an elderly lady and her daughter standing right in front of the bandaids.

So I look, finally figure out what I need over their shoulders and they apologize and scoot over. I can’t help but over hear them bantering about the lady waiting for her Covid vaccine. That’s why they were in front of the bandaids, that’s where the line was for vaccines.

I can tell she is a little nervous, so when I hear her say she is getting the Moderna shot I said, ma’am, I’ve had both of mine and I’m sure you will be fine.

She asked me some questions, I answered her, we all chatted a few minutes about how my vaccine went and I wished them well.

Then off I went.

I checked out, and left.

Getting to the parking lot I see another woman next to me, who is still in her car, has pushed her buggy to directly behind my car.

Grumbling I put her buggy up, glare a bit, and leave. Even called my mom fussing.

Tonight, I’m sitting at home and I can’t get my afternoon off my mind.

How stupid people can be, and selfish. I even started to write about the epidemic of stupidity right now.

But that lady and her daughter stayed in my mind, and on my heart.

And it hit me....my day may not have been what I thought it would be, but it was exactly how it was meant to be.

Seems as though, even while internally

I was grumbling, I helped someone. I now feel like a jerk for grumbling, because maybe God meant for me to be there today.

To help one person not be scared. Maybe that was my job today, and I was not being a good and faithful servant.

I guess the lesson I learned today, that we could all learn, is even when we aren’t at our finest, we have the ability to help. To lift.

To ease a fear. Why else would those women have been stopped right in front of the one thing I needed in the mega box store?

I hope if you have the opportunity to help someone, you do. I hope you are a lot happier about it than I was. And yes, God, I got my lesson.

We all have grumpy days.... and even when grumpy, we can make a difference.

1937, son of Marion Harvey Pair and Winnie Aileen Stephens, left us February 21, 2021, after a 5-year battle with cancer, to join his parents and his brother Robert Royce in the great beyond. The family moved to Ft. Worth during WWII. Travis graduated from North Side High School in 1955 and attended SMU in Dallas on a football scholarship, later transferring and graduating from Texas Wesleyan College in Ft. Worth. He served two years in Korea with the U.S. Army and returned to resume working for Kroger.

In 1971, the opportunity to own his own supermarket, following in his Grandfather Stephens’ footsteps, saw

him moving from Arlington, Texas to Southeast Texas.

Winnie became the family home for the next 31 years.

During that time, he operated five super-markets and eleven convenience stores known as Little Pair Stores. He made it a priority to support the community and schools with his time and donations.

Ever one to “sit back and relax”, he received a few honor in his spare time. Past President of Winnie Area Chamber of Commerce, Sabine-Neches Retail Grocers Assn., Texas Retail Grocers Assn, and Affiliated Foods, Inc. He took time to serve on boards for The Texas Rice Festival, The HoustonGalveston Area Council, Gulf

Coast Bank, and the Strategic Oil Reserve Environmental Committee in New Orleans under the Direction of the US Dept. of Energy. Travis was honored in 1988 as the Texas Retail Grocer of the Year and by the Winnie Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year, and in 1996 was recognized by the International Rice Festival, for his contribution to the promotion of the rice industry.

Travis helped create the Winnie-Stowell Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and was a proud “20 year sponsor”. He enjoyed duck hunting and deer hunting in West Texas with his “hunting buddies” as well as bass fishing when

time permitted. Serving as Treasurer of Trinity Episcopal Church in Anahuac for 30 years, playing dominoes on lawns of the Court Houses of Texas with his youngest grandson Blane, and hosting family get-togethers were favorite pastimes. He drove for Meals on Wheels for over twelve years in San Marcos.

His favorite “retirement” job was driving the customer trolley for Premier Outlets where he was able to visit with customers from all over the U.S. as well as tourists from other countries.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dolores, and children Terry and Elaine Pair, Tina Grau and Paul Whetstone, Tanya and

Bryant Rhodes, and Tia Pair.

Grandchildren Kenneth and Chrissy Pair, Tracy Pair, Jared Tyler and Kayla Grau, Ashley and Kasi Love, Caitlyn Rhodes and Blane Rhodes.

His smiles, hugs and sense of humor will be missed by his family, his cousins, many nieces, nephews and friends who he met on his life’s journey.

Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on March 27, 11:00 AM. Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, San Marcos; the American Cancer Society; or Meals on Wheels.

TxDOT Launches New Campaign to Stop Pedestrian Deaths users because they aren’t equipped with protective equipment, such as airbags, seat belts and bumpers.

This month TxDOT is launching a unique, socially distanced outreach campaign near intersections and high traffic areas in the state’s major cities to call attention to this reality and deliver messages where people most need to see them— at street level. This “walking billboard” public education effort will use stark, attentiongrabbing visuals reminding motorists and pedestrians that “pedestrians don’t come with airbags” and “you can’t fix a pedestrian at a body shop.”

TxDOT offers these safety tips to prevent a deadly encounter: For drivers . . . · When turning, yield the right of way to pedestrians. · Stop for pedestrians

at crosswalks. · Be cautious when passing stopped buses or other vehicles. · Pay attention and put your phone away— pedestrians may enter your path suddenly. · Obey the speed limit and drive to conditions.

For pedestrians . . . · Cross the street only at intersections and crosswalks. Look left, right, then left again before crossing. · Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Final Stop for 4141 Engine Marks Start of Bush Museum Expansion

The journey ending Monday started modestly 16 years ago, when a museum director asked a railroad executive to borrow an old caboose.

Now the historic Union Pacific No. 4141 Engine, a locomotive painted to match Air Force One, is at its permanent home in front of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

There it will remain as the

George & Barbara Bush Presidential Foundation starts planning and fundraising for a multi-year, multi-million dollar expansion.

The locomotive is blanketed in a deep blue covering to protect it from the elements and construction hazards as a pavilion is built around it.

NEED TO QUIT DIGGIN’

Everyone knows about the Big Chill that beset Texas in mid- February. But not everybody understands the severity of fish loss on the coast. Most bay fish cannot survive the frigid temperatures Texas endured. And dead fish can’t talk.

Numbers compiled by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Coastal Fisheries staff estimate 3.8 million fish were impacted coastwide, consisting of at least 61 species.

Important game species accounted for 9% of the total estimated fish kill, including Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Sand Seatrout, Red Drum, Gray Snapper, and Red Snapper. The other 91% involved forage species upon which game fish feed.

According to TPWD, “Based on past freezing weather that killed a multitude of fish on the coast, this one ranks as deadly as any.”

Chuck Naiser, a fishing guide and president of the conservation group FlatsWorthy headquartered in Rockport, summed up the devastating effects of the prolonged freeze: “Our resource has suffered a huge loss, from Galveston Bay to the Lower Laguna Madre.”

FlatsWorthy is a diverse community of coastal anglers and boaters promoting respect for other Texas bay users, respect for the resource, and respect for the law with the goal of improving the health and productivity of Texas bays now and for the future.

FlatsWorthy was recently featured in the Texas Wildlife magazine article “Coastal Conscience”.

Many young fishermen are unaware how long it takes a fish population

to recover from a blow like the recent one.

The rule of holes says when you find yourself in one, quit digging.

In this case, the “hole” we’re in is the void of gamefish and baitfish created by the subfreezing weather. Texas has lost generations of fish. To cease digging into what’s left of the breeding populations redefines the term, “No Brainer!.

Chuck Nash, former Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Chairman and FlatsWorthy advisory committee member, suggested “catch and release” as a way to do that and stop the bleeding. “That’s a small sacrifice -- a bump in the watery road for anglers compared to an indefinitely long recovery period of meagre stringers due to fewer fish in the bays,” said Nash.

TPWD Executive Director Carter Smith said, “While some areas of the coast and some species of fish were clearly impacted more than others, overall, this is the worst freeze-related coastal fish kill we have experienced since the 1980s.

“There are some important lessons from those historical events that we can draw upon as we work to acceler-

ate the recovery of our fish stocks, particularly speckled trout along the mid and lower coast,” Smith added. “The most obvious, and immediate one for speckled trout is conservation, a practice where every Texas coastal angler can make a contribution, right now.

“Practicing catch and release and/or keeping fewer fish to take home in areas like the Laguna Madre will give us that many more fish to rebuild from as we augment populations through our hatchery efforts, and we carefully evaluate what regulation changes may be needed to foster a quicker recovery for our bays.”

Final Stop for 4141 Engine Marks Start of Bush Museum Expansion (contd)

Foundation officials want to complete the exhibits in time for a 2024 celebration marking the 100th anniversary of Bush’s birth.

“It’s extraordinary to have 4141, this living piece of history, at the museum and library permanently,” said Max Angerholzer, CEO of the Bush Foundation.

“Thanks to Union Pacific, Chancellor Sharp and everyone at Texas A&M for helping bring it home.”

Warren Finch, longtime director of the Bush Library and Museum, recalled on Sunday how in 2005 he was preparing an exhibit on the history of trains. He traveled to Union Pacific Railroad headquarters in Omaha, Neb. “We asked for a caboose,” Finch said.

“Dick Davidson, CEO at the time, told us, 'I don’t know if we can find you a caboose.

How about we give you a locomotive painted like Air Force One and numbered 4141.'”

Union Pacific and museum staff surprised Bush with the locomotive when it came to College Station for the 2005-2006 exhibit.

It then traveled the nation on Union Pacific rails as a rolling tribute to the 41st president.

No. 4141 Engine returned to College Station in December 2018, leading the Bush funeral train to where the former president was laid to rest here alongside First Lady Barbara Bush.

On Sunday, Finch and Angerholzer watched along the tracks as No. 4141 reached College Station one final time.

“It has come full circle,” Finch said. “This will mean so much to future generations to have the train here, to show people his love of railroading and to talk about the life and legacy of this great man.”

Also watching were Richard Zientek of Union Pacific Railroad, and Mark Welsh, dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service “It's exciting for everybody at Texas A&M because this place celebrates President Bush,” Welsh said. “We are among the many Americans who appreciated his respectful governance, the way he treated people and the example he set professionally throughout his life.”

No. 4141 traveled north past Kyle Field at about 10:40 a.m. on the rail near Wellborn Road. It was pulled by another iconic locomotive, No. 1943 The Spirit, which honors U.S. military veterans.

At 6 p.m., No. 4141 was lifted off its rails by two, 500-ton cranes, placed on a 12-axle trailer and driven to the museum.

The locomotive weighs 315,000 pounds.

On Monday, the No. 4141 was lifted off of the trailer and placed on its permanent outdoor pad. The intricate hoist and placement was done with 1,000-ton gantry lift system. Such systems are often seen loading and unloading cargo at deep water ports.

Community The company handling the move, Supor Services LLC, specializes in unique, heavy-duty hauling challenges. It moved the original Statue of Liberty torch to a new museum and removed a ditched commercial airline from the Hudson River in 2009.

Carlos DaSilva, project manager for the operation, said the move took about four-months to plan and involved a crew of more than 25 workers.

“We’ve done a lot of specialized projects,” DaSilva said. “We’re very proud to be part of this one.”

THE HOMETOWN PRESS Davidson, the former CEO of Union Pacific who helped create No. 4141, and his wife Trish have made a significant lead gift to jumpstart fundraising for the museum expansion, Angerholzer said.

Given the months of fundraising, planning and

“What we're really excited about is what this means for the university, for the community and for the presidential library come 2024,” he said.
