Crowd Swarms Hospital to Get Vaccinated

By Wade Thibodeaux The Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors had a regularly scheduled meeting for Wednesday, March 17, 20021 at 9:00 am. However, Monday morning, March 15, 2021 we(The Hometown Press) received the following statement from TBCD General Manager James Gibson in an email.

"Due to circumstances surrounding the current grand jury investigation involving Trinity Bay Conservation District, the March Board of Directors meeting is canceled. The District is

cooperating fully with the Chambers County District Attorney's office and will continue normal operating procedures under the advice of legal counsel".

The Hometown Press will continue to monitor the situation and will report on news as it becomes available and is able to be verified. Trinity Bay Conservation District has a regular monthly meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, 2021 and we will advise our readers on the status of that meeting as the time approaches.

Per Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia, Chambers County will be modifying some of the safety measures currently in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Executive Order GA-34.

Effective Wednesday, March 10,the changes can be summarized as follows: 1.

Face coverings will be encouraged for both staff and clients, but will not be required at most locations. (See number four for the exception to this rule.)

2.

All staff and visitors will be asked to complete a selfscreen when entering any County building.

3.

For the health and safety of our staff, we ask that any person who has COVID-19 symptoms not enter any County building.

4.

Masks will still be required for both staff and clients at all County clinical operations where faceto-face interaction occurs. This includes

COVID-19 Vaccine PODs, WIC Clinics and the Employee Health and Wellness Center.

Effective Saturday, March 27,Chambers County will reopen County-owned community buildings for public rental with the exception of White Memorial Park and McLeod Park Community Buildings. These two buildings will remain unavailable for rental for the foreseeable future.

All residents are encouraged to continue using their best judgment regarding their safety and the safety of their neighbors. All five variants of the COVID-19 virus have been identified in Harris County and two of these variants are already present in Chambers County. Additionally, Chambers County continues to see widespread community transmission of COVID-19.

By Wade Thibodeaux The East Chambers ISD Board of Trustees met in regular session on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 6:00 pm. in the Administration Building located at 216 Champions Loop in Winnie, Texas. One of the highlights of the meeting was the approval of the 20212022 school year calendar which has a start date of August 18, 2021 and concludes

with instructional days on June 02, 2022 and graduation on June 03, 2022. The calendar is very similar to the traditional calendar adopted by the District every year with two weeks off at Christmas and Spring Break beginning March 14, 2022.

In other action, the school board approved contracts for all returning teachers with the exception

of those who have announced retirement or those who have already indicated that they would be leaving the District for moving or other reasons. Contracts for employees associated with the ACE Program were also renewed.

by Wade Thibodeaux Well, as we discussed the last couple of weeks, I was out of the basketball State Championship game in San Antonio, but I had already booked and paid for a cabin on the Guadalupe River.

What’s a guy supposed to do in that situation? Yep, we loaded up and headed to the river for a little fishing, relaxing, campfire storytelling, and of course some good grilled food. The weather really didn’t cooperate and we only had one day of fishing, but that was okay because it left a little more time for the cooking and storytelling. We had our option of a gas grill or a charcoal pit and the first night I was there I opted for the gas grill because it was a lot quicker and I was trying to get hamburgers cooked in the dark. The second night, I went all out and pulled out the ribeyes and the potatoes.

As soon as I spread the coals from the mound of fire that I created with the charcoal, I placed the foil wrapped potatoes on the pit and let them cook for a little over

an hour and then placed the perfectly seasoned bone in ribeyes on the grill with an almost perfect bed of coals. I flipped those babies a couple of times and then they were ready. I probably haven’t had a baked potato in over a year, and I’m sure that the blood in my veins is barely moving from the shock of the pile of cheese, butter, and sour cream that was loaded onto that poor potato, but man it was good. When I cut into that perfectly seared outside with that beautiful red inside of that ribeye and placed that first bite into my mouth, I thought that I had died and gone to Heaven. In this fast paced world that we all exist in, we sometimes accept the flavor of a steak cooked on a gas grill because we justify it as a time saver, but there is nothing like the flavor of good beef on a charcoal grill. I did have a small salad with oil and vinegar dressing to offset the effects of the potato, butter, sour cream, and 16 ounces of good red beef, and

in my mind it was all okay because I was on vacation and only get to do that about once a year.

Enough of the food talk, let me tell you about some of the storytelling that occured around the campfire in the evenings. And as a disclaimer right up front, I will admit that the first night may have involved some adult beverages, but the second and most important night, I was stone cold sober. Stoned is a good choice of words because as it turns out, one of the guys staying in one of the adjacent cabins was a partner in one of these CBD companies that have come into the spotlight in the last few years. The way I understand it (now) is that the CBD is extracted from the Hemp plant and it gives you some of the beneficial effects(for medicinal purposes) of marijuana without the illegal consequences of smoking the real thing.

Now, for an old country boy that has never even held a joint in his fingers, this was a real eye opening conversation. I was just kind of playing along until he said that they were doing about $10 Million a year in sales and that they were in negotiations to merge with another $10 Million company that simply grew the Hemp so that they could control the

process from seed to sales.

To put this in perspective, they will do more in sales in a month than I will do in a lifetime in the newspaper business and I got really interested in the CBD business. I learned about THC-8 and THC-9 and how much Hemp(about 10,000 pounds) it takes to produce 50 millilitres of THC-8 and then what happens with all of the by-products of the plant after they have extracted everything that they are interested in collecting from the plant. We talked about how easy it was to grow the Hemp and how the different varieties produce different products and I started think-

ing that Hemp was surely easier to grow than rice that had to be checked on everyday to make sure the Nutria rats hadn’t cut a hole in your levee and let all of your water escape. He even told me that The New York Times had come down to Texas and had written an article on their operations. That good old newspaper business had made their business explode after the article hit the streets.

I was really getting into this thought process, but then on the way home Sunday, I got to thinking that I had better stay with what I knew how to do and leave all of that other stuff alone.

Besides that, I have already spent all of my money on those cows that I bought last week and I’ve got to figure out how to get them some hay stored up for next Winter. I wonder if anybody has done any studies on how cows can survive on Hemp plants after all of the leaves have been stripped off and also if that would add any medicinal value to the beef.

I’m also amusing myself thinking about all of my hay baling buddies and the look on their faces when I would ask them to pull into my field and “roll” up a few bales of Hemp. Till next time, I’m.......Wade in the Shade.

FROM CLAW HAMMERS TO YELLOWHAMMERS

My high school mascot was a Yellow Jacket. The school newspaper was called the Jacket Journal.

On football Fridays students wore spirit ribbons that carried the phrase “Sting ‘em” or something similar.

In normal times our class has two reunions a year.

We call them swarms.

I think the names of high school mascots are interesting. One that has perplexed me for years is the Rotan Yellowhammers.

I finally found someone who could shed some light on how the name of the mascot came to be.

Ted Posey coached at Roby 9 years then was at Rotan 20 years. During his days at Roby, his budget for equipment and supplies was meager. “For football, basketball and track five hundred dollars for the year,” says Ted. His salary wasn’t much either. “I had 4 children. My take home pay was $365 a month. The house payment was $100.

Every morning I’d ride the school bus to school with the kids. I lived 3 miles out.

In the evening I hitchhiked home. I didn’t have to

wait very long for a ride.”

Coach Posey has seen lots of changes. “I grew up; out there by the double mountains.

We still had the teams and horses. In the second grade I plowed with the team.”

Ted has tons of memorabilia from his coaching and teaching years, some of which has to do with how the Yellowhammers got to be the school mascot. “I have a 1921 annual. I’ve seen a 1922 annual and it had a picture of a claw hammer.

That was the school mascot then. I also have a 1946 school annual and the mascot then was the Yellowhammer.

So sometime between 1921 or 22 and 1946 they went from a claw hammer to the yellowhammer.”

The yellowhammer is a bird and coach Posey says every once in a while he thinks he sees one by his house.

“Actually it’s a woodpecker.

In 1962 the Rotan student council decided to have a school newspaper. It was called the Flicka. In 1927 the yellowhammer became the state bird of Alabama.”

Coach Posey doesn’t know of another sports team anywhere that has the

yellowhammer as a mascot.

The Dallas Morning News named the Yellowhammer as one of the most unique mascot in the country.

Ted Posey is still in great shape at age 85. “I still feed cattle. I’ll pick up 6 or 8 50-pound bags of feed, throw them in the pickup and go feed.” He has been known to jump flat-footed from the floor to the top of his desk. “I asked some folks if they thought I could do this and they said no. So I just squatted down and jumped straight up. Landed on the desk standing up.”

Ted played high school sports in Rotan. In football he played offense and defense, fullback and defensive end. He made all district in high school and later played at Cisco Junior College and Abilene Christian University. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Twenty-Two individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Monday, March 8 and Saturday, March 13. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

Now in its eighth year, H-E-B Quest for Texas Best has expanded its search for the finest foods and beverages in the Lone Star State to also include nonfood items. Babin Announces 2021 Congressional Art Competition for Area High School Students

U.S. Congressman Brian Babin (TX-36) will once again host a Congressional Art Competition in 2021.

Students in grades 9-12 wishing to participate must reside within the 36th Congressional District of Texas.

When the Spindletop gusher made its grand debut in 1901, the area encompassing Texas’ 36th Congressional District became the epicenter for the United States’ energy industry.

The growth ignited by this oil well never slowed. For more than a century, Southeast Texas has been a hub for virtually every segment of the energy industry: discovery, exploration, p r o d u c t i o n , transmission, supply, and technology.

Participants must choose one of these six segments of the energy industry to depict in their submission for the TX-36 Congressional Art Competition.

Teachers or homeschool students must submit an intent to participate application no later than Sunday, March 20, 2021.The competition winner must be able to participate in the national awards reception in Washington, DC. Once chosen, the winning artwork will represent Texas’ 36th District for one year in an exhibit in the United States Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The elimination of things someone else found offensive. The insanity running amok, is out of control.

Over the last few years, the thought process of “that offends me it must be Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time. He was a great, positive thinker, who just never gave up. One of his more famous inventions was the light bulb. It took Mr. Edison over two years and more than one thousand tries to find the perfect metal that could carry the current of electricity without burning up. The Lord only knows what you may be going through as you read this, but do not lose heart. Do not quit. We need you. I need you. Watching you depend on the Lord through your battles is the only thing that keeps some of us going.

My best friend was not a fan of one show my daughter liked. Her kids did not watch them. I respected that when her kids were at my house, and we didn’t watch that.

Once again, pretty simple concept.

Not one time did I protest to a manufacturer, demand they be removed, or get angry. I decided for me and my child, and that was what I enforced.

I sometimes wonder if some of this is a marketing ploy, let’s get the media to say we are canceling this item and shoot sales through the roof when folks hear they can’t get it anymore. Seuss books

as an example, those were the 6 lowest revenue making books in the Seuss collection.

Is it sheer coincidence that they needed to be removed, for offenses, and have now sold out??

Happy Sunday peeps..... use your brain and stop being caught up in what the media tells you is right or wrong for you and your family.

Decide on your own what is or is not in line with what you believe in. Make wise choices, and parent. It’s way more than just dressing them cute, and having fun. It’s your responsibility to expose them to things in alignment with your beliefs. Not the media, the government or a manufacturing facility.

It’s regulations time.

TPWD annually reviews regulations and considers biological situations, law enforcement issues, and public opinion. If deemed necessary, new regulations are created.

Proposals for new regulations or changes in existing ones are usually brought before the TPW Commission at the March meeting. A 2021 Commission Work Session takes place on March 24, but no testimony is allowed. Testimony and final voting take place at the March

Any regulation changes have been in the planning stage for a lot longer. Biologists in the three divisions -- Wildlife, Inland Fisheries, Coastal Fisheries, and the Wardens in the Law Enforcement Division begin considering necessary changes during the previous year.

The Commission is briefed on proposed changes and the public notified in advance and provided an opportunity to comments online, by phone, or email through March 24. Public testimony is also accepted during the March 25 meeting, BUT due to COVID-19 complications, it must be done remotely. Public attendance is prohibited.

Pre-registration is required. There are ways to view and/or participate.

The WILDLIFE Division has proposed 11 changes; one makes crossbows legal archery equipment.

Trailing wounded deer with dogs is proposed in ten east Texas counties where previously prohibited. The experimental pronghorn season in the Panhandle is up for elimination, and the general pronghorn season could be extended to 16 days, statewide, if approved.

Panola County’s East-

ern turkey spring season is set to be closed, and mandatory spring turkey hunting reporting is on the docket for some “1 gobbler” counties. North and South Zone turkey seasons are also being aligned along Highway 90.

Migratory game bird regulations are unchanged except to fit the 2021 calendar. Two more hunting days are intended in the Special White-winged Dove Area.

Other proposed changes define muzzleloaders, open the chachalaca season with quail season, and set squirrel season to open year-around in currently closed counties.

SALTWATER reg proposals include allowing recreational-only crab traps on docks and piers in restricted Aransas County areas, and clarifying snapper limits in Texas and federal waters.

INLAND FISHERIES Director, Craig Bonds understated his team’s efforts at proposing reg changes. “A team of TPWD fisheries biologists has worked for the past two years to review our current catfish regulations,” Bonds said, “with the goals of continuing to provide good angling, meeting current angler needs, and reducing the number of regulation categories.”

Financial Spring Cleaning After a small dose of winter, who isn’t ready for spring? March brings the first day of spring, Daylight Savings Time, March Madness, baseball spring training, and St. Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately, the changing of the season also ushers in the annual guilt trip of spring cleaning. This can also be a good time to do some “financial spring cleaning” by tracking your progress and reevaluating your goals. Are you keeping up with your savings plan, have you reduced expenses and whittled down your debt?

At the start of every year at our family of banks, we review the previous year’s strategic plan. We examine initiatives, check progress, to see how close we came to hitting mark. This allows us to test our decision-making process. You can do the same thing in your financial spring cleaning. Here are some springtime tips: • Make a plan for your future. This may mean saving for a home or saving for

retirement. Whatever amount you want to contribute, make it the first expense to come out of your paycheck so you won’t forget.

• Automate your savings by setting up recurring transfers every payday to cultivate good savings behaviors.

• Change your online banking password and other frequently used accounts.

• Clean up your paperwork, shred old financial records, begin scanning your receipts and important paperwork to reduce clutter. Take advantage of e-statements to clear out your mailbox.

• Cancel unused or unnecessary subscriptions. List all subscriptions so you can evaluate the actual need for expenses such as monthly streaming services, gym memberships, antivirus software, hard drive backup services, and others.

• Review your insurance policies to make sure coverage and deductions are still appropriate. This includes health and life insurance as well as property insurance.

In order to help guide your financial decisions, I will offer my personal assumptions for the year, based on my 30 year career of bank leadership.

COVID has cast a long shadow, it is still with us and will continue to impact our economy this year and for many to come. Here in Texas, we are blessed with an improving economy, while the national economy is still fragile. We can expect more federal economic relief for families and businesses.

Interest rates will likely remain at low levels for some time, based on what the Federal Reserve is telling us. We continue to see rapid adaptation to technology for online banking, shopping and home services, video conferencing, and work automation. We are not quite out of the woods yet, but I have always believed we will get through this together.
