Runnin Bucs Season Ends at Regional Finals

By Wade Thibodeaux The East Chambers Runnin Bucs only had one loss this year, but unfortunately it came at the Regional Finals game and it sent the Bucs home instead of advancing in the playoffs. East Chambers started off the weekend in good shape as they survived a scrappy Lorena team to escape with a 53-35 victory in the late game

Friday night. The early game of the night had seen New Waverly and Little River Academy go to double overtime before Little River Academy pulled out a one point win at 7069. Regardless of the outcome of the early game, East Chambers would be facing a team that had played an extra quarter of basketball and surely would be exhausted in

the short turn around of the tournament format.

However, things were just the opposite as the Bumblebees from Little River Academy came out smoking hot, hitting their shots while the Bucs seemed lethargic and cold, missing many opportunities for easy buckets. The Bucs trailed the entire game with the point spread ballooning to 18 points

at one time in the final quarter. East Chambers made a run late in the final frame, cutting the deficit to 5 points, but Little River Academy called a time out, regrouped and pushed the lead back to 10 points with the final being 68-58 in favor of the Bumblebees.

by Wade Thibodeaux Good news, good news.......at least for me anyway. And, at least from my perspective, but maybe from some of y’alls point of view, it may be .....ehh, who cares. After careful search and a lot of running around the countryside, I have officially become a cattle owner once again. I purchased 21 head of cattle this past weekend and I couldn’t be happier. This is going to be a project that may never be completed, but I’m going to probably die trying. You see, by degree, I am an animal scientist. Well, that piece of paper that I received from Sam Houston says so anyway, and probably the one thing that makes me tick more than anything is to take a set of cattle and change them into something better and something more valuable. Anybody with a pile of money can go and buy a really nice

set of cattle that somebody else has cultivated, but it garners great pride for me to be able to take a rag tag set of cattle and over time turn them into that really nice set of bovines. I don’t have that pile of money, so I have to start at the bottom and work my way up.

Maybe, I could say that I’m starting in the middle with this set of cows because they are pretty well matched and uniform, they just need some grass, some attention, and some outcross genetics. A friend of mine, John B. Collier IV has spent his life devoted to the betterment of a set of cattle and he has some really nice beef, but he is still constantly working on genetics to make his herd better. I’m getting a little long in the tooth(old) and I don’t know if I will be able to make the strides that John B has made, but I’m going to give it the old

college try.

Now, on to another topic.

Last week we talked about basketball and I detailed the tale of the two teams that I was following. I was just sure that they would be playing each other on Saturday after a victory for both against other opponents on Friday night. I was so sure that one of the two teams would be advancing to the State Championship that I made reservations for a cabin on the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels and I could get a little trout fishing in and still make the short drive to San Antonio for the basketball game. Friday night arrived and the first game was New Waverly against Little River Academy(somewhere around Waco) and New Waverly led the entire game until about a minute left when the tide turned and LRA made a run and tied the game and we headed into overtime. New Waverly led most of the first overtime and then LRA tied the game and we went into a second overtime. The second overtime was really close and then LRA took the lead and New Waverly was never able to catch

up and ended up losing a tough one by one point.

Okay, I’m now down to one team, but hey, only one team could advance anyway so I’m still good to go. East Chambers played the second game Friday evening against Lorena and ended up winning by double digits. Alright...... all systems go for Saturday, just a different game than I was expecting. Sat-

urday was so disappointing. East Chambers trailed the entire game and wound up losing by 10 points. So now, I have a fully paid for cabin on the Guadalupe with no basketball game to go to in San Antonio.

Oh well, I hope that Texas Parks and Wildlife stocked plenty of trout in the river this year cause I’m going to be fishing for three days and hopefully catch my

I have to get this fishing trip in this weekend because I have to hurry home and take care of a set of cows. Congratulations to both East Chambers and New Waverly basketball programs as you both had great seasons and made deep runs into the playoffs.

THE SOUL OF THE BIRD LADY

I’ve had some conversations with Carolyn Ohl, who owns the Christmas Mountains Oasis located in a remote area near Terlingua. Serious birders and photographers go there to see the Lucifer Hummingbird, Elf Owl and a rare butterfly. Some call her the Bird Lady of the Big Bend. She is profound in her observations about birding.

“Birders’ lives are enhanced by visiting the oasis for maybe a few hours in their lifetime, but mine is enhanced all day every day,” she says. “I’m always pruning, watering, filling feeders or pumping water so that the oasis will be lovely for birders. In the very beginning I may have done it for myself but it soon morphed into a passion that I cannot separate what’s for me and what’s for birders. I would do it even if no one visited, but the pleasure I derive from it is in sharing it.

“After 25 plus years it just can’t be any other way.

Until I got into birding in 1995 I felt like a square peg in a round hole. I never fit in anywhere. I was too different. But suddenly with the birding community I found my kindred spirit

and feel I’m a part of an entity that’s special. I can’t separate myself anymore from that entity.

“I enjoy ancestry because I’m building a tree for posterity. I enjoy butterflies, dragonflies, birds and flowers and I document everything. I think the main reason I enjoy them is because it’s fun to see a new species for the first time and it’s fulfilling to feel like a part of nature. When I saw my first Lucifer it was like a religious experience.

“When I sit here with a birder who is getting their lifer Lucifer it’s as if I’m vicariously seeing it through their eyes for the first time, too. It’s an enormous pleasure for me.

And it hurts me when great birds are there and I’m the only one seeing them. The pain of that exceeds the pleasure of seeing them.

I love to share the birds.”

Her oasis in at the end of a 7-mile dirt road with bumps and curves. She gives maps to visitors. It is open only to those who make appointments to go there. The oasis has no overnight facilities.

Carolyn doesn’t charge anything but occasionally

she’ll get a grant for some improvements. Right now she’s building a new water feature and viewing area.

Every August she holds a hummingbird festival and gives presentations about the fascinating tiny birds.

She is on Facebook under Christmas Mountains Oasis.

When she was 5 years old in Iowa an uncle took her on a birding trip and bought her a child’s bird book. All the time she was growing up she thought birding was just for kids. Then, as an adult, her sister in law suggested she and Carolyn go birding. Carolyn went and was hooked.

She bought a section of land and built a comfortable home. She posted sightings of birds on various websites and soon birders all over the country and some foreign countries wanted to come to her place.

Thirty-Seven individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, February 28 and Saturday, March 6. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

In fact, HR 1 would silence all discussion about election fraud, voting irregularities, and the countless issues that left half of the country so dissatisfied with the execution and results of the 2020 election.

With all of this on the table, and absolutely no bipartisan input, can anyone honestly say that the goal of this bill is to actually benefit the people rather than politicians?

We need commonsense

That leads me to where we are.

Our nation has been shaken. Politically. Our health. Our economy.

Our mental health. Our social structure. All of it. Shaken. I fully believe the one thing everyone can agree on at this point, is our lives have been shaken up.

You may call it changed, inconvenienced, or just difficult. No matter what your personal belief is on any issue, at some point in the last year, your life has been altered in some way.

Maybe it’s just because you couldn’t go to a bar for a while. Maybe you missed events, weddings, funerals, loved ones, school,

jobs shifted to home, whatever. We can all agree that in some way, our lives were altered.

Sadly, many lives have been altered due to the death or illness of loved ones.

So where do we go from here? Well on Wednesday, we attempt to resume whatever normal is. Some will still mask up. Some won’t. My hope is, if a business requests it, just oblige. That person that is at the door is just doing their job. Follow the business request or go elsewhere. It really is that simple. Be kind.

Be courteous. Just like no shoes no shirts no service.... they have the right to still request masks. Treat that person at the door as you would a loved one.

Maintain your healthy practices. This virus has gone nowhere. So

Hopefully bosses and owners realize allowing people to work while ill can spread so much.

NEVER WAS A HORSE…

An old cowboy saying goes, “There never was a horse that couldn’t be rode; there never was a man who couldn’t be throw’d”.

It’s actually a more illustrious way of saying “Nobody’s perfect.”

Neither man nor horse.

It eases the pain of suddenly being reminded that no matter how hard you try; you’ll never be perfect. Only one man ever was. It makes you feel a little better when you foul up. Reminds

I resemble that. In my case, it’s usually from getting frantic at deadline and my fingers move faster than my brain.

Blame it on computers.

A sage observer a few years back commented that these new, revolutionary replacements for typewriters made it possible to make mistakes faster than any invention besides tequila and handguns.

The morning after the 1948 election, The Chicago Daily Tribune got in too big a hurry to get to press and go home, figuring Tom Dewey was far enough ahead of Harry Truman to run a banner headline that announced, “DEWEY DEFATS TRUMAN.” Some newspapers that week ran a grinning picture of newly elected President Truman holding a copy of that paper.

Nowadays, most current readers have never heard of Dewey.

Closer to home, when A&M and Rice played in 1955 in Houston, Rice was ahead 12-0 with just a little over three minutes to play when a reporter decided he had his story and took the press box elevator down to beat the

crowd. As the elevator descended, he heard a tremendous roar as the Aggies suddenly awoke from a lackluster performance and scored the first of what would be three touchdowns to win.

And there was a movie theater across the street from a classy hotel once that ran a marquis touting a double feature it was showing. The first feature was “Big Cat”.

With the only separation between the features being that the second was on a separate line, the theater promoted its title: “House Across the Street.”

A realtor once told me I was making a big mistake by not buying the house he was showing. I curtly told him I had made mistakes and would probably make many more. I didn’t realize how prophetic that was. This week marked the 186th Woods, Waters, and Wildlife column I have written.

I’ve caught a couple of mistakes before publication. A few got by me, however. And they stung.

San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo

In December 2020, the San Angelo (Texas) Stock Show and rodeo announced changes to the 2021 schedule.

These changes included splitting up the stock show and rodeo events. The San Angelo Rodeo will run April 9-24. On March

5, 2021, the SASSRA Executive Board approved three items: The rodeo would be held at 100 percent capacity; tickets would go on sale to the public on March 15, with volunteers having an opportunity to purchase tickets

on March 12; and an additional $100,000 would be added to the total purse. That will make the amount of the total purse about $500,000, according to Justin Jonas, Executive Director for the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo.
