Academy game at 1:00 pm.

Saturday, March 6, 2021 in Madisonville, Texas.

When they are victorious in those two games, they will play in the State semi final game(probably Tuesday) with a chance to go to the State Championship game in San Antonio on Friday, March 12, 2021 at 3:00 pm.

Firemen enter a smoke filled RV to make sure the blaze was extinguished.

By Wade Thibodeaux The Chambers County Emergency services District No.1 and Winnie Stowell Volunteer Fire Department responded to an RV fire during the middle of a snowstorm last week. It appears as though the water heater on the RV malfunctioned and caused the fire.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident and even with longer response times due to the icy road conditions, the Firemen were able to extinguish the blaze before it could spread to additional units.

by Wade Thibodeaux This is one of those weeks where I had plenty to write about, but I just can't remember anything because I have basketball on my mind. Basketball, basketball, and more basketball......I went to six games in six days with an average two hour drive each way this past week as two of my High Schools were involved in the playoffs.

Huntsville boys and girls were in the postseason and also East Chambers boys were making their annual run in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the Huntsville girls lost on Monday night, but then the two boys teams were alternating each night as both teams were making up for missed games during the frozen tundra that we experienced the week before last. The Huntsville boys lost a heartbreaker to the number three ranked team in the State after taking them to overtime before

finally losing 64-61, and so now I'm down to just one team left in the hunt for a State Championship.

The East Chambers boys rolled through the week, winning three games in six days and are now taking a little break before playing a Regional Tournament style setup this coming weekend. The good news about that series of games is that they are going to be held in Madisonville, Texas and that's a 20 minute drive from my Huntsville home, so at least I will get to sleep in my bed, eat my own cooking, and not have to pay a hotel bill. If everything works out right, then East Chambers should play against New Waverly in the Regional Finals game and that one should be a great game. The sports guys have been talking about the possibilities of that matchup since the beginning of the season and it looks like it's going to happen. I know

that New Waverly is in Walker County and that is the name of one of the papers, but East Chambers is my alma mater and I hope that nobody from Walker County holds it against me for rooting for my green and gold. However, I will support the New Waverly Bulldogs if they are victorious because that could mean a trip to San Antonio and a little fishing in the Guadalupe River for some trout.

Okay, enough about basketball. Is this Texas weather crazy or what????

Last week we were freezing and this week we are running our air conditioners. And......I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but hurricane season is just around the corner. I made the comment the other day that it seems like we always have a bad storm after a really cold Winter and I almost got thrown out of the room. Then I got to thinking, I guess everybody had a really cold Winter and there is just no telling where those storms are going to land this year.

Everybody along the Gulf Coast had ice and snow and I'm thinking that it would be pretty rare for a storm to hit every portion of the

coast, but just in case, I'm going to get ready for just the opposite of freezing weather. I'm going to make sure that I have a generator, plenty of gas, and a small window unit air conditioner. Of course, I will have at least a week's worth of water and some canned foods like all of the delicacies, Spam, potted meat, vienna sausage, crackers and cookies for dessert. I'll make sure that I have plen-

ty of propane for the gas grill and an adequate supply of hamburger patty's, maybe a couple of ribeyes, and some potatoes for baking. With a gas grill, an air conditioner, some water, and some food, I can live for at least a month. We have learned from previous storms that if you turn off everything in your breaker box and leave the hot water heater on, it takes about an hour of generator

time before the hot water heater cycles and you have hot water for a bath. I have said it before and I'll say it again......a country boy can survive. I don't know about everybody that's around me, but a shower every three days or so and I'm good to go. Let's hope and pray for everybody's sake that nobody gets any more hurricanes. MARCH SECOND IS JUST ANOTHER DAY?

There’s not much hoopla, no organized statewide celebration but March 2nd 1836 is an important day in the history of Texas.

That’s the day Texas became a republic and declared its independence from Mexico.

It was a long time coming.

In 1820 Moses Austin asked the Spanish government in Mexico for permission to settle in Texas. He was granted land, but Austin died soon thereafter and his son, Stephen F. Austin, took over the project. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain and Austin negotiated a contract with the new Mexican government to allow him to bring 300 families to the undeveloped area. Others joined in the settlement and soon the Mexican settlers were in the minority. Mexico was not pleased with this situation and passed laws to restrict the flow of immigrants to the new land.

In 1833 Austin went to Mexico seeking statehood for Texas within Mexico but was sent to prison.

He was released in 1835, the year Mexican dictator

Santa Anna demanded that citizens of Gonzales return a cannon that had been used to defend against Indian attack.

When Mexican troops were sent to retrieve the cannon, Gonzales residents fired it at them while yelling, “Come and take it.” That became known as the first battle of the Texas Revolution.

Texas formed an army under Sam Houston and established a provisional government.

A convention of Texans met at Washington on the Brazos with the purpose of drafting a constitution and declaring independence from Mexico. In December of 1835 the Texas Army drove Mexican troops out of Sam Antonio.

In January of 1836 Santa Anna/s Army began its assault on the Alamo. The delegates in Washington on the Brazos voted in the Declaration of Independence on March 2nd during the siege on the Alamo.

The Alamo battle was fierce.

Santa Anna attacked with more than 3,000 soldiers.

The Texans were sorely

outnumbered with less than 200 troops. For 12 days the former mission was bombarded by cannon and rifle fire. Colonel William Travis smuggled out a message to Texans that read, “I shall never surrender or retreat.

Victory or death.” The Mexicans claimed victory over the Alamo defenders on March 6, 1836.

Six weeks later, General Sam Houston‘s Army surprised Santa Anna’s troops at San Jacinto with shouts of “Remember the Alamo.” The Texans defeated the Mexican troops and captured Santa Anna.

The Mexican dictator withdrew his troops south of the Rio Grande and recognized Texas as a republic. For nearly ten years Texas existed as a separate country with Houston as its first president. In 1845 Texas joined the union as the 28th state. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Twenty-Nine individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, February 21 and Saturday, February 27. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

By Wade Thibodeaux The Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors met in regular session on Wednesday, February 23, 2021 at 9:00 am in their office located at 2500 State Highway 124 in Stowell, Texas. One of the items on the agenda was to receive the 20192020 fiscal year audit and the auditor presented his findings to the board that included an overall clean unmodified opinion, which is the best that can be achieved. He went on to say that there were no instances of non compliance and the net assets had decreased about $1 Million with a loss of about $111,000.00 in net position for the

year. He stated that there were no significant issues with management. In the public comment section of the meeting, Hazel Meaux made comments that she was supportive of the attorney that had been fired and wanted the board to rehire him. Donnie Self made a similar public comment about the previous attorney and then went further to make derogatory comments about the attorney that he suspected that the board would hire to replace the previous attorney. The board then voted 4-1 with Director Jenkins voting NO to hire the Germer Law Firm, which was the only firm to respond to the District's appeal for qualifications. Meaux and

Self then stormed out of the meeting, both making comments as they left.

The board also approved a new fee schedule which would raise the fees for new customers of the District as they apply for service. This new fee schedule will not raise water rates, but will instead increase the fees to establish service such as water and sewer taps, fees for delinquent payment of water bills, increase penalty for damage to District's equipment, and other fees. The rest of the meeting was somewhat ordinary as the financials showed $6,456,346.84 in total cash and reports were given pertaining to the overall water situation in the District

with special attention to the performance during the recent freezing weather.

Drainage issues were discussed at great length with the ownership of a certain ditch being at the center of much discussion. A motion to begin the process to borrow money from the drainage side of the balance sheet to fund repairs at the water plants due to breakage in the recent freeze was approved. The next regular meeting of the Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors will be Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 9:00 am. in their office located at 2500 State Highway 124 in Stowell, Texas.

Chambers County – The Chambers County Appraisal District is reminding property owners who have physical damage to their property as a result of the recent severe winter weather to apply for a temporary disaster exemption.

The Texas Property Tax code allows a qualified property that is at least 15 percent damaged by a disaster in a governor-declared disaster area to receive a temporary exemption of a portion of the appraised value of the property.

Qualified property includes real property such as homes and buildings, certain manufactured homes and tangible personal property used for the production of income for a business.

The property owner must apply to receive the temporary exemption with the appraisal district no later than May 28, 2021.

By the grace of God, I will soon celebrate the turning of.... yeah never mind on the number, but I decided to resurrect my "what have I learned this year" observations, and share. It's interesting to me that no matter the age, we learn more and more every year, if we are only open enough to do so. With that said, let's go....

I have learned that my house, while far from fancy, is a safe haven for my family. In the last year I have housed my brother and sister in law while they repaired their flood damaged home, and currently my mom as we await a plumber for a couple of busted pipes at her house from the freeze. I always say, no matter what you have,

it's something someone else will need. Share the things you have.

I have learned that nothing will test your patience like a pandemic. That masks, quarantines, and social distances are something I don't like. Neither is losing someone you love to Covid. Always be safe, and do what you have to do, for your family and your home.

Others may not like it, that's ok. You do you.

I have learned that 300 miles is a big distance when your parents are in the hospital after a wreck. I have also learned how to assemble bed rails, potty chairs, shower seats, and walkers like a champ.

You can too. You just have to jump in and do it.

I have learned that losing a pet after 14 years is brutal. We love those fur babies with all we have in us, and when it's time for them to cross that rainbow bridge to no more pain, we simply must love them more than ourselves, and let them go. It's hard, it hurts, and you will cry. And then one day,

another fur ball will show up in your life, and rescue your heart.

Just when you needed it the most, but would not admit it to yourself.

I have learned that I don't like dealing with one hurricane in a season, much less multiples.

But I also learned that I can and will survive the trials that Texas weather throws my way.

Me, Mom, a new puppy and a crabby cat all evacuated successfully, and actually laughed the majority of the way. Life isn't always horrible, you just have to allow the laughter in at the stressful times. It makes it more enjoyable.

I have learned that most of society has lost their minds when it comes to politics. We no longer think everyone should be held to equal standards, that if they do something wrong and are of our chosen party, it's ok. But if they are of the opposing party it's wrong. Double standards are the norm anymore, and we justify one behavior with another.

This goes against all I have in me, as I was raised in the world of "if

your friend jumped off a bridge are you going to follow them"....I was never allowed to justify bad behavior with others actions. It did not fly. And for that I have decided I am grateful.

Happy Sunday peeps....I sometimes wonder if there will be a year in which knowledge gained will not be something I have.

Then as exhausting as new found knowledge is, I realize without it we become stagnant and stop growing. As humans. As parents, kids, and friends. I ask for this next year that you find a source of charity to give to, and focus on that. That you give to your loved ones more of your time, and less of your dollar.

That you embrace your challenges, no matter how hard. More than anything, I ask that you find a way to love thy neighbor.......regardless of their political affiliations. We are losing relationships for people we don't even know. We really are better than this. Onward and upward we go!

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of fortyone years, Hazem T. Elkurd; her mother Lula Mae Bourque LaPointe; her son Robbie Glenn Douglas; her granddaughters Shinea Phillips and Chessica Herd; her great-grandchildren Lexy, Aleah and Zayne; her sister

Loretta Bomsburger; her brothers Wayne LaPointe, Mike LaPointe and wife Nancy and Ronald James LaPointe and wife Trish; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Friends were invited to visit with the family beginning at 10am, with a Rosary recited at 10:30am, on Friday, February 26, 2021, at St. Louis Catholic Church,

315 Buccaneer Drive in Winnie, Texas 77665. A Mass of the Resurrection followed at 11am, with Rev. Fr. D. Stephen McCrate, Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will immediately follow in Fairview Cemetery in Winnie.

"Freeze, Weeds!"

Sharon “Sherry” Ann Elkurd, 68, of Winnie, Texas, passed away unexpectedly, on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at her home.

As my long-time friend, Harold Stone, with the Fame Bureau, said, “There’s no way we can hunt ourselves out of this (hog) problem.

It’s Christopher Columbus’ fault. Hernando de Soto’s, too. They and other early day explorers brought hogs to America. I’m not advocating destroying history or public statuary, but they’re the ones who started all this, although it probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

The “all this” referred to above means the fact that feral hogs nowadays run wild and raise havoc in 253 of Texas’ 254 counties. There are estimated to be six mil-

lion of these porkers in America, and over half of them haunt the Texas landscape.

What’s so haunting about them? Well, they do a lot of their dirty work under cover of darkness, and that includes crimes against agriculture, structures, equipment, fences, and water sources. The sow pictured had been swimming and wallowing in mud and possibly dung. Wanta drink out of that spring?

Most crop damage they do isn’t just for feeding, either. Trampling and soil damage from rooting and wallowing take the largest toll.

A 2019 estimate indicates that the ANNUAL loss to agriculture in Texas is approximately $118.8 million!

But it’s not just a farm and ranch problem.

Researchers conservatively estimate pig damage in vehicle collisions to be $36 million a year in America.

Hitting a hog with one wheel usually causes a turnover.

And the problem is increasing. In South Texas, adult and subadult sows average 1.57 litters a year, delivering four to six piglets. Mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, eagles, alligators, and bears kill an insignificant number annually.

Humans eliminate the

most through hunting, trapping, and auto collisions, but the combined predation obviously isn’t controlling the rampant population explosion.

The Texas Agriculture Commissioner proposed legalizing “warfarin”, a poison that was lethal to hogs, a few years ago as a population control method.

But when the public realized warfarin’s unintended consequence of killing other non-target wildlife species, opposition became overwhelming. Some wildlife could take the poison directly and die. Others could eat poisoned hogs and get a lethal dosage. That was entirely unacceptable. But an alternative is being considered.

According to an article by an ag extension agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service that appeared in the Denton Record-Chronicle, discussions have begun to consider clearing legislative barriers to using another poison called “sodium nitrate”.

I was unable to contact sources at the Capitol for verification, but it doesn’t sound like bills have been filed, yet. The 60-day deadline for free-filing of bills usually falls about March 10, so time is a factor.

Wright got back to the middle and earned $9,000 for first to win the rodeo with $15,800, more money

than any other winner.

Before San Antonio, Wright was seventh in the world standings. His San Antonio winnings will more than double his earnings in the world.

Getting a jump this early in the season is new for Wright.

"Having a good winter is something that I really haven't done in the past two years," he said. "…

This is the exact way I wanted to start my year. I ride better when I get into the summertime and we're riding more bulls and more horses every day. Starting like this, hopefully I can roll on through and keep everything going."

Wright also finished fourth in the saddle bronc riding.

He went into San Antonio in second place in the allaround world standings.

Wright had to go through the wild-card round after getting bucked off in the semifinals. He posted an 84-point ride on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo's Cabo on Saturday afternoon to

win the round and advance to the finals.

"I wish I'd gone to the semifinals and done my job," Wright said. "But I tend to do that thing where I make it really tough on my mind and my stomach to go through the hard stuff to get to the top. It's stressful, but when it works like this it's cool."

Team ropers Clay Smith and Jade Corkill tied a ProRodeo record and set a San Antonio rodeo record with a 3.3-second run in the finals. The previous record was set by Dustin Bird and Levi Tyan in 2020 at the AT&T Center. Smith and Corkill won the rodeo with $12,000 apiece.

Other winners of the $644,840 rodeo were: Bareback rider Clayton Biglow ($13,700); steer wrestler Stockton Graves ($11,250); saddle bronc rider Kolby Wanchuk ($13,500); tie-down roper Adam Gray ($13,700); and barrel racer Carly Taylor ($13,300).

Entergy Texas, Inc. hereby publishes NOTICE that, pursuant to Section 36.203 of the Public Utility Regulatory Act (codified in TEX. UTIL. CODE) and 16 Tex. Admin. Code § 25.235(b), it filed with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (the “Commission”) on February 19, 2021, a tariff to implement a revised fixed fuel factor.

All of Entergy Texas’ retail customers whose fuel charges are calculated under the Texas fixed fuel factor tariff – including but

not limited to Residential, Small General Service, Large General Service, Large Industrial Power Service, and Street and Outdoor Lighting Service – will be affected by the Commission’s approval of the revised fixed fuel factor. The revised fixed fuel factor, if approved, will affect only the fuel portion of the rates charged by Entergy Texas and will have no effect on non-fuel base rates.

Entergy Texas seeks Commission approval to revise the fixed fuel factor effective with the first billing cycle of the March 2021 billing month.

Entergy Texas proposed that the fixed fuel factor be changed pursuant to a semi-annual filing to be made each February and August, with revised fuel factors to be effective with the first billing cycle of the March and September billing months, pursuant to a methodology that changes the fuel factor based upon changes in the published price of natural gas. This methodology was authorized for use in Docket No. 32915.

The revised fixed fuel factor, differentiated by voltage level, is as follows:

The revised fuel factor would result in a decrease in Entergy Texas’ annual Texas retail fuel and purchased power revenues by approximately $7.7 million, or 1.6% on an annual basis.

Compared to the fixed fuel factor approved by the Commission effective August 2020, a residential customer using 1000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month would see an approximate decrease of 1.38% annually, or $0.41 on average per month, on his/her electric bill. The fixed fuel factor rate is designed to pass through to customers the actual fuel costs incurred by Entergy Texas to serve customers. Entergy Texas is not allowed to make

a profit on fuel costs.

These changes will be subject to final review by the commission in the electric utility's next reconciliation. Entergy Texas expects the revised fixed fuel factor to be in effect for the billing period of March 2021 through August 2021.
