Personal Message from Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie Dear Friends, On behalf of the great City of Mississauga and Members of Council, I would like to recognize all the dedicated and tremendous volunteers and community leaders for helping to organize the 15th annual Paint the Town Red Canada Day celebrations, in our beautiful waterfront community of Port Credit. 2018 marks the 151st anniversary of Confederation and our country’s founding, which is an important milestone in our nation’s proud history. Since then, Canada has grown to become a globally-respected country that safeguards and embodies the unwavering values of peace, order and democracy - here at home and in peacekeeping efforts undertaken around the world. Paint the Town Red is a much anticipated and cherished event enjoyed by residents from all parts of our City, and in communities throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. As we gather to celebrate the birth of our nation, let us reflect on how blessed we are to call ourselves Canadians. Today and every day, I encourage residents to demonstrate compassion and kindness to those in our community who are in need of our support. Once again, I offer my very best wishes to the organizers and participants who have all come together for the 2018 Paint the Town Red Canada Day celebrations! Happy Canada, Mississauga!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA! Welcome to Paint the Town Red Port Credit’s Canada Day Celebrations! 2018 commemorates our 15th Anniversary of this wonderful event. As Canadians, we have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for. We are the 2nd largest country in the world, a country of compassionate, kind, and caring citizens. Canada ranks amongst the highest in economic freedom, education, and quality of life offering individuality, opportunity, harmony, and inclusion. We should all be proud to be Canadian. Come to Port Credit and join us as we proudly celebrate Canada’s birthday in Mississauga’s most picturesque and vibrant community. What’s Canada Day without a parade? Mississauga’s matriarch, Hazel McCallion will be the 2018 Grand Marshall for the Paint the Town Red Hazel McCallion Canada Day Parade starting at 11am, followed by our opening ceremonies and the cutting of the nation’s largest Canadian flag birthday cake at La Villa Bakery. Memorial Park will be buzzing with non-stop entertainment on our main stage. Take the family to visit the Kidzone for inflatables, crafts, interactive entertainment and more. Vendors, food trucks, and a licensed beer area in Memorial Park with bar service provided by the Mississauga Credit Valley Lions club and Paint The Town Red Port Credit. People who work tirelessly to bring you Port Credit’s Canada Day celebrations. Beginning in 1973, the 46th Annual Bread and Honey Festival took place from June 1st to 3rd, in the Village of Streetsville Memorial Park. The celebration once again hosted a talented line-up of performers for both children and adults. DEDICATION TO THE GREAT JIM TOVEY
community tribute was held for Jim Tovey by friends and family at the Small Arms Society, on June 2nd, after his tragically passing away at the age of 68 in January. Jim’s best friend, Robert MacAskill, planned the dynamic tribute and introduced the many people who shared memories of Jim. Video, live music performance and kind words were made for a heartfelt afternoon honoring Jim’s impact on our community. Jim was elected in 2010 as Ward 1 Councillor in the City of Mississauga, serving for 6 years. In that short time no other politician has made such an impact in a community and the environment with his legacy being the transformation of the Lakeview Waterfront Connection. The Credit Valley Conservation Board of Directors announced the decision to name the new Lakeview Conservation Area after Jim. The Lions Club presented Jim’s wife with the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for his exemplary accomplishments. Jim would have said, “How cool is that?” He will be deeply missed.

CARASSAUGA FESTIVAL
n May 25, 26 and 27th, Mississauga held Carassauga, the cities largest multicultural festival. Once inside a Pavilion, visitors were surrounded by the sights, sounds and tastes of the country they were visiting. Each Pavilion depicted the culture of the country of origin and provided a line-up of entertainment that was offered throughout the three days. Interactive entertainment, including dance classes and performances, storytelling, skits, fashions shows, games, music, theatre and film allowed each visitor the opportunity to create their own personal idea of a great time.

SOUTH SIDE SHUFFLE FUNDRAISER The community got their dancing shoes on and came out for an evening of great music and fun at the Southside Shuffle fundraiser, on May 26th, at the Port Credit Legion. There was a silent auction with some great items, including a golf package for 4, massage therapy, dinners at restaurants in Port Credit and a live auction for a $2,500 gift voucher for a Sea Cruise.

t was a beautiful, sunny weekend for the Port Credit Artfest, held at Memorial Park, on May 25th-27th. This festival celebrated over 100 of the top artists and artisans from all across Canada. There was a large variety of pottery, glasswork, live music, food, jewellery, paintings and much more. Those who attended had a great time and overall it was a very successful weekend.
CAWTHRAAKLAVIK EXCHANGE AT WALDEN CIRCLE It was a very interactive afternoon with the residents of Walden Circle and students from Cawthra Secondary School, in Mississauga and Moose Kerr School, in Aklavik, on May 27th. The YMCA Youth Exchange Program facilitates students to experience life in the north. The eleven students from Aklavik explained their way of life in their small village of only 600 residents. The Cawthra students had already visited Aklavik and were now showing the exchange students all the highlights of the area such as the CN Tower and everyone’s favourite Ripley’s Aquarium and Niagara Falls. All students served tea and coffee with their homemade bannock to the residents and enjoyed each other’s company.

MISSISSAUGA WATERFRONT FESTIVAL KICKS OFF SUMMER BY PATRICIA ANDERSON
his year, 2018 Mississauga Waterfront Festival is brimming with many new performers, activities and attractions, so you can enjoy your weekend in Port Credit. Guests come from all over Ontario to view the Annual Summer Festival. We have moved our Rockin’ River Revue to Friday night! Our Credit Goes Country will now be a two-day musical extravaganza celebrating upcoming and popular Canadian Country Artists. Music lovers will enjoy the different genres the festival offers, from the Heritage Stage to our Tim Hortons Main Stage.

The Mississauga Waterfront Festival forms an important part of the cultural fabric of our wonderful City. Started in 1996, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival has been an outstanding successful annual event. The Board of Directors hope to see you the weekend of June 15th, 16th & 17th. They can’t wait for you to participate in many of the wonderful activities that are organized for the entire family. Our Sponsor a Child program is supporting 25 Social Service Agencies and Community Outreach programs in Mississauga. This insures the inclusion and opportunity to join in and enjoy the Carnival Rides, as well as a free meal on site. The tremendous success, growth and expansion can be attributed to remarkable sponsors like Ristorante Aielli, who have generously hosted our annual kick off since our inception. The Port Credit BIA has been extremely instrumental in our continued success. DOG GUIDE WALK
On May 27th, 22 volunteers came to participate in the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides at J C Saddington Park. 100% of the money raised from the walk went directly towards the raising, training and placement of Dog Guides for Canadians with medical or physical disabilities. Dog Guides Canada has already provided specially trained Dog Guides to more than 2764 people, all without any government funding. With that help, more people will experience the mobility, safety and independence a devoted Dog Guide brings.

May 27th was a perfect day for a Hike. Heart House Hospice hike participants enjoyed a 5km walk/run in gorgeous weather at Lakeside Park and after, enjoyed pizza donated by Boston Pizza. The small but mighty group of 27 raised an outstanding $12,000 in support of Heart House Hospice programs! BENCH UNVEILING CEREMONY BY JO-ANNE BEGGS
On May 14th, Port Credit unveiled a picnic table in honor of the LGBTTIQA2S Community. This picnic table now stands as the first public beautification artwork that celebrates the LGBTTIQA2S Community in all of Mississauga. The artwork was provided by Peel Alternative School South. It is hoped that this humble and spectacular picnic table can be an inspiration and a beacon for advocates of inclusion and for the LGBTTIQA2S community, helping each of us to see clearly and tangibly that together we can make our great city more representative, more inclusive, stronger and even more beautiful.

6TH ANNUAL MADD WALK
The 6th Annual MADD Canada Strides for Change event took place on June 3rd, at JC Saddington. Strides for Change is a 5km walk to raise funds and awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. On average, 4 Canadians are killed every day due to crashes involving alcohol or drugs and tens of thousands are impacted by being injured annually. The donations raised by this special and very important event, makes a difference in the lives of victims and survivors and their families. 02

ississauga VegFest was the city’s first vegan festival. On May 12, children, teens and adults all enjoyed the fun and educational event. Over 60 vendors showcased the GTHA’s finest veggie-based food, drink, clothing and accessories and so much more. On June 3rd, Credit Valley Golf & Country Club hosted the Interim Place’s 2nd Annual Purple Tie Luncheon. With much support from the public, they were able to launch the In Her Name Fund to give support to the women who are experiencing violence. $25, 000 was raised for this fund, in support of women and children fleeing violence in the Peel Region. SPRING GARDEN TOUR
On May 27th, the 13th Annual Spring Garden Tour took place in the Clarkson and Park Royal neighborhoods. Eleven homeowners graciously agreed to open their beautiful spring gardens, in support of the fight against cancer. With the sun shining brightly, participants of the tour enjoyed a plant sale, with proceeds donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. There was even a Master Gardener on hand at one of the gardens, to answer all questions. To further enhance visitors’ experience, music students from Mentor College performed in selected gardens throughout the day.

MISSISSAUGA’S ANNUAL PLANT SALE Many fellow gardeners and neighbours came out for the Cloverleaf Garden Club of Mississauga’s Annual Plant Sale, held in the parking lot of Carmen Corbasson Community Centre, on May 12th. There was a great selection of all sorts of plants, including herbs, ground covers, shrubs, native plants, perennials and tons of hostas, all at unbeatable prices. The Cloverleaf Garden Club of Mississauga has a long distinguished history and is well known for bringing horticulture and gardening knowledge to hundreds of people in the community. ST. STEVEN’S ON THE HILL SPRING FLING
It was a perfect sunny day for St. Stephen’s on the Hill’s Annual Garage Sale, held on May 5th. Every nook and cranny in the church, as well as the expansive lawn, was filled with bikes and sports equipment, plants, baked goods, furniture, household wares, jewellery, clothes, toys and so much more. The proceeds from the sale helped St. Stephen’s on the Hill maintain their programs, such as their Junior and Youth Choir, as well as many local community outreach programs here and around the world. The Girl Guides held a BBQ to help support their UK trip. No one left empty handed!

WALK FOR ALZHEIMER’S June 2nd was a delightfully warm day in Port Credit, for the Walk for Alzheimer’s. This walk is Canada’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The 5K walk was a way to celebrate life and a great way to simply get active, while promoting awareness in the community.

On the first Saturday of every month, from October to June, St. Andrew’s Memorial Presbyterian Church cooked up a delicious breakfast, in Port Credit. Held in the basement of St. Andrew’s, there was plenty of room for many friends and neighbours to come together and enjoy each other’s company, while being served by warm and friendly volunteers.

aya Charbin, a recent award winner at the Marty’s, showcased her SS18 collection on May 23rd, in Mississauga, at the beautiful Harding Estate. The fashion show, which was more of a gala, brought together over 150 fashionable ladies to a night of fun and glamour. The theme was Summer Dream, which was a literal inspiration for Maya, after the long winter we endured. The designer is starting to establish herself well in the Mississauga fashion scene especially with dressing her city’s Mayor and having her in attendance at the show as well. For this collection, Maya allured her audience into a world of pastel hues and dainty denim pieces, a kind of celebration fit for fairies. It was a beautiful day with the venue decked in flowers, the tent with runway transformed into a garden and the lake for backdrop made for a truly memorable experience.

THE MARTY AWARDS he 24th Annual Mississauga Arts Awards were held on May 10th, at the beautiful Mississauga Convention Centre, with more than 540 guests in attendance and hosted by The Mississauga Arts Council. The MARTYs are a distinguished and elegant red carpet event, recognizing excellence in the arts in Mississauga and celebrating outstanding works of creativity across all art disciplines. This year’s awards were a true example of all the amazing artists who live and work in our wonderful city. SCHOOL LIFE CLARKSON
away. Now I’m near the end of my first year at Clarkson and the school feels like home. The second-half of the school year gave us the most magical time of the year, Cancer Drive.
We are proud to hear that Clarkson Secondary School has been awarded the Premier’s Award for Accepting Schools. The award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of just ten schools throughout the province. Clarkson’s team of students, teachers and the school’s admin team shared compelling ideas to create a climate that was inclusive and accepting of everyone in the school’s community.
For the lead-up to Cancer Drive, students were encouraged to wear a specific colour to recognize a type of cancer that still affects us. On the Thursday, we had a Camp Ooch representative come to the school to talk about what Camp Ooch does for kids and how much our donations help. On the Friday of the lead-up week, we welcomed our feeder schools to the SAC Carnival and BBQ. It was a fun afternoon, full of good food, fun inflatables and dunking teachers.
SECONDARY SCHOOL
When reading about the Premier’s Award for Accepting Schools on the Ontario Ministry of Education web page, the site notes Clarkson’s focus on overall wellness. For example, Clarkson provided a Mental Health Awareness Week (May 7-11) where students relaxed while engaging with the activities that took place during the week. Some of the activities that took place were bath bombs, peaceful yoga, meditation, Zumba and Paint Lunch. We also had St. John’s Ambulance therapy dogs come in for the students and staff, so that they could reduce some stress. Additionally, Charger’s in Charge Day (CICD) at Clarkson is an opportunity for students to promote inclusivity and equity by celebrating diversity within the school. For the 2017-2018 school year, Clarkson students chose “Diversity is Power” as a theme for the year. Our school also received a $5,000 “Dare to Dream” grant, to turn an office into a wellness space. The room is made especially for the students and staff for school-wide activities, such as yoga, workshops and lunchtime “Mindful Mondays.” The mindfulness room has a gorgeous mural of a lotus flower and has a plant wall, which was created by students here at Clarkson. It is incredible having our school, Clarkson, receiving the Premier’s Award for Accepting Schools. From Chargers in Charge Day to our Mental Health programs and activities, we have truly made a huge impact on our community. BY KRUPA PATEL A YEAR IN REVIEW This year at Clarkson has been a great one. As a grade 9 student, I was intimidated going into Clarkson for the first time, however, everyone was so helpful and kind, which took the nervous butterflies 44

To kick off Cancer Drive, we started with Clarkson’s Annual Milk Chug. Principal Zammit and Mr. Kontos participated along with many students from all grades. On the second day, there was also a dodgeball buyout. It was nice to see so many grades playing on teams with each other and having friendly competition. The third day’s theme was beach day, which included karaoke and leg waxing. The fourth day of Cancer Drive gave us decades day, with the activities including an art auction and the CAA’s annual mud run. The conditions for the mud run were a bit cool but it was still a fun event. The course was very muddy, yet I ran it three times. I will definitely do this event every year, rain or shine. The final day of Cancer Drive included tricycle races and the wrap up assembly that had us pie our wonderful teachers. The good sports this year included Mr. Russell, Mr. Cowan, Mr. Arduini, Ms. Garlock, Ms. Boruvka, Mr. Prosser, Ms. Gonzales-Fadel, Mr. Sembay, Principal Zammit, Mme Héneault and for the first time, Mr. Kontos. Our very own Mr. Grover even decided to participate in the head shaving fundraiser. Clarkson is a school where there’s no such thing as being too young or too inexperienced for real world education. Everyone here, including teachers, are learning every day and that’s what makes this school so special. BY KENDRA JOHNSTON

SECONDARY SCHOOL All the best to the Mississauga community for a warm and wonderful summer of 2018 from the staff, students and parents of Lorne Park Secondary School. We have much to celebrate from a very successful 2017-2018 school year. We are very proud of our excellence in academics, with more than half of our students achieving honours in each semester and an amazing number of students achieving an average of 95% or above! Many of our Grade 12 students are off to some of the best post-secondary programs in the country and some traveling internationally to further their studies. We are very proud of our excellence in athletics that included 9 teams and approximately 200 athletes advancing to OFSSAA. We also had multiple students receive athletic scholarships to post-secondary institutions that include Queen’s, Waterloo, Ottawa and Seton Hall in the United States. We are very proud of our excellence in the Arts, that included our Senior Band winning a silver medal at both the regional and the national competitions at Music Fest 2018. Our drama program entered 4 productions into the Ontario Drama Festival and had one production advance to the Central Ontario Regional Finals. Finally, our greatest achievement in the Arts this year was our production of Grease: The Musical, which we performed for approximately 1000 audience members over 5 performances. STREETSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
With only one month left until two glorious months of summer vacation, excitement flows through the halls. The past few months have been full of fun events and these festivities continue in the month of May and June. Streetsville Secondary School’s Interact club, hosted its annual community garage sale on May 5th. The cafeteria was overflowing with items to be sold and the school raised a total of two thousand
dollars to be donated to the Dare Arts First Roots program. This program supports at-risk indigenous youth in remote communities in northern Ontario. This event would not have been so successful without the help of Rotary, which hosted a charity barbeque. The generous donations from local businesses also played a large role in the event’s astounding success. In order to spread awareness and support for the victims of bullying, Streetsville Secondary School put together their annual Pink Week. The students showed up to school wearing pink and the Tiger Leadership Council set up multiple sales and events for the students to take part in. Pink lemonade, pink cake pops and pink t-shirts were sold throughout the week. Staff and students enjoyed the week of awareness and it culminated with a Pink Week barbeque. Hot dogs, cotton candy and various other goodies were sold at the barbeque. With the help of Metro and Superstore’s generous donations of hot dog buns, this event was a success. The cafeteria was teeming with students as they participated, supporting this hugely important cause. The wait until the end of the school year is causing a vast mixture of emotions to surface in the students, but these mixed feelings are even more intense for the graduating class. They have only one month left before they must say goodbye to the school they love. The arrival of the annual Grad Breakfast makes this approaching departure all too real for the grade twelves. It was a beautiful morning full of friends and delicious food. That same afternoon, the graduating class gathered on the school’s field to participate in their annual Grad-a-palooza. Various blow-up obstacle courses and challenges were set up under the clear blue sky. The graduates’ beaming smiles were bright enough to put the glorious sun to shame but underlying it all was the sadness of getting ready to leave that which they have come to love. A major topic of discussion at Streetsville Secondary School is the upcoming sixtieth reunion. The reunion will took place on June 2nd at the school. Hundreds of alumni, as well as former and current staff members and distinguished members of the school community, gathered at the school to celebrate sixty years since the school’s opening. It was a blast, with decade rooms where former students got the chance to catch up with their former classmates. Sporting events, as well as food, drinks, and entertainment were also at the reunion. Streetsville Secondary School students also be participated in the Bread and Honey parade, as a way to commemorate the school’s sixtieth anniversary.
