MESSAGE FROM THE
B UR LINGTON FOOD B A NK ROBIN BAILEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BURLINGTON FOOD BANK
The Burlington Food Bank wants to thank our incredible community for their ongoing support through both food and financial donations! With the pandemic in 2020 and going forward into 2021, we are seeing more people reaching out for assistance. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are able to support any Burlington resident that needs our assistance with non-perishable food and more importantly, fresh food such as milk, eggs, bread, fruits and vegetables. We also provide
We continue to offer contactless, confidential delivery and curbside pickup. Anyone that needs our assistance should email info@burlingtonfoodbank.ca or call us at 905-637-2273 and we will call you back to make arrangements for your delivery or pickup. Our New Years resolution – our goal is to allow people to come back in and shop for themselves and at the same time keep a delivery option available going forward for those with mobility trouble and can’t make it into the Food Bank. As all food-security agencies realize, it’s not just about the food alone. When people are able to visit with us, the interaction gives them a better sense of dignity and community and lets them recognize that we are here to support them. We miss seeing our clients but we need everyone to stay safe, wear your masks, socially distance and wash your hands so that we can all get back to the way we would like so that our volunteers can again interact with clients in a way that helps them feel well cared-for and supported by this great Burlington community. Stay safe!

On December 3, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Burlington Councillors and Gift of Giving Back Chair, Jean Longfield, attended the official Flag Raising ceremony at Burlington City Hall to proudly proclaim Dec 1-8 as "The Gift of Giving Back Week" and kick-off the 'Help Us Feed Kids: Holiday Food Drive', which ran from December 3 through to December 20.
The results were nothing short of a Christmas miracle. One donation at a time, the community responded. Hundreds of high school volunteer hours were earned by students who collected donations. Thousands of compassionate young athletes and community members flooded their little storefront with bags and bags of food donations. And our healthcare heroes still took the time to make yet another remarkable difference in the community.
TOGETHER, THEY ACCUMULATED 68,000+ LBS AND $9,000 MONETARY DONATIONS FOR THEIR 6 BENEFICIARIES: The Salvation Army in Canada, Halton Women’s Place, Carpenter Hospice, Food for Life, Burlington Food Bank and Compassion Society.
Thank you BURLINGTON! NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

The City of Burlington is PLEASED to ANNOUNCE
C
Karen Roche as FIRE CHIEF for Burlington
Chief Roche brings more than 24 years of progressive Fire service experience working in many facets of the emergency services. Most recently as Acting Fire Chief and prior to that Deputy Fire chief with the City of Burlington. This has afforded Karen a thorough understanding of the challenges of managing modern fire services during times of economic, demographic and community riskbased issues, including her role in the Emergency Control Group (ECG) during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The City of Burlington is committed to promoting access, equality, diversity and human rights through innovative policy, programs and services. Chief Roche is committed to contribute in a meaningful way to this through her appointments to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC); International Diversity Executive Leadership Program (iDELP) and more recently the joint Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) / International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) appointment to the International Bullying Taskforce.
"Burlington City Council is very pleased to have Karen Roche as Fire Chief for our great city. Karen stepped in as interim-chief while our city continues to face a global pandemic as an integral member to our emergency response team. We look forward to her continued contribution to the City of Burlington and the Burlington Fire Department. Her years of fire services experience will continue to prove valuable to the city and our ongoing commitment to public safety." Mayor Marianne Meed Ward

Gourmet
SNACK IDEAS for those with a SWEET TOOTH
We all find ourselves craving sweets from time to time. Chances are when you want to indulge, it’s usually on a decadent cake or chocolate bar.
INSTEAD OF SPENDING MONEY ON A STOREBOUGHT TREAT, WHY NOT ENJOY THE TASTE OF INDULGENCE RIGHT AT HOME? This gourmet snack idea won't break the bank and is sure to impress your family. A fun take on cheesecake, it combines toffee, sweet and salty kettlecorn popcorn and chocolate for an easyto-eat dessert. You still get the rich and creamy texture like you would from a cheesecake but with an added crunch from the popcorn.
Popcorn-Coated
CHEESECAKE ON A STICK Prep Time: 20 minutes ı Serves: 8

Every year, on March 8, countries the world over celebrate the achievements of women and acknowledge their quest for gender equality. In fact, International Women’s Day is an official holiday in countries, such as Afghanistan, China, Cuba, Nepal, Russia, Uganda, Vietnam, and many more. In others it is widely observed by women, men and children who give flowers and small gifts to the special women in their lives.
The Zonta Club of Oakville has been celebrating International Women’s Day since the Club’s inception in 1973. In recent years, the Club hosted sold-out galas at the Burlington Convention Centre featuring celebrity keynote speakers, such as Canadian Olympian Catriona Le May Doan and technology leader Amber Mac. Their last two galas combined raised $75,000 for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Since hosting a gala is not possible this year, the Zonta Club of Oakville would like to celebrate all the wonderful women in YOUR life. It could be your mom, your sister, your daughter, your grandmother, your boss, your best friend, your neighbour, your teacher, your doctor, your coach, anyone. For the Zonta Club of Oakville, International Women’s Day marks a moment in time to recognize and honour all the ‘Zonta Roses’ who make the garden of life beautiful!
Here’s how you can celebrate the Zonta Roses in your life:
POST a photo, message or video on social media about your #ZontaRose. SEND A CARD - Send your Zonta Rose one of Zonta’s International Women’s Day ‘I CELEBRATE YOU’ cards available at zontacelebrates.ca. One package of 5 cards is $30 and purchasers will receive a $25 tax receipt. Proceeds will go to support Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and local women’s charities. GIVE A LOCAL GIFT - Treat your Zonta Rose to a special gift or meal from a local Oakville business. Look for Zonta’s 'WE CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY' posters in shop windows around town. "We’re thrilled that so many members of the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area (BIA) are celebrating and honouring women in this way," says Event Co-Chair Liz Hibberd. "We can show our love in return by taking advantage of the special savings and deals being offered by these shops and restaurants."
Zonta International, established in 1919, envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman can achieve her full potential. The Oakville Chapter is a compassionate and dedicated group of women who volunteer their time to advance the status of women locally and internationally through
All Oakville residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Instagrammable Display in the Towne Square (94 George St.) from March 5 to 8 and follow Zonta Oakville on Social Media. According to Event Co-Chair Kathy Mundy, March 8 is not only International Women’s Day, it’s also Zonta Rose Day. "A single yellow rose has been a symbol of Zonta International since the early 1980s," says Mundy.
Yellow roses are often associated with friendship and caring, which is perfect because that truly is what Zonta is all about.
advocacy and service. They help their local charitable partners provide emergency housing, financial aid, educational support, and mental and physical health services to women in need. The Club also provides scholarships and academic awards to local young women and birthing kits to women in developing nations.

Splendor at
THE BPAC Article by Leslie Styles
The 4th Annual Festival of Trees adorned the lobby of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre during most of December. Ten artificial trees, generously donated by Canadian Tire, were sponsored and decorated by individual Burlington organizations such as Laurel Steel, PV&V Insurance, Royal Botanical Gardens and more. All the trees were bid on in a silent auction. The trees were made more desirable by including gift cards, gift baskets, children’s toys, and other presents. One tree even offered a hot shave at The Barber Shop. The trees boasted ornaments, ribbons, crystals, sprays and giant feathers and all were beautiful and decorated with love.

After lighting up BPAC’s lobby for four weeks, these festive beauties were picked up by the silent auction winners just in time to grace their homes for the holidays. All proceeds went to BPAC’s Local Artist Development Initiative which provides performance opportunities and support for Burlington-based artists.
