If you haven’t already, bundle up the kids for a magical stroll through Spencer Smith Park during the 25th Festival of Lights running from November 27 until January 8, 2021. The light festival is a great outing to get your family into the Christmas spirit. Grab some hot chocolate and enjoy the glowing illuminations as you walk the waterfront. With 60 magical lighting displays there’s something for everyone to appreciate from Santa taking off in his sleigh to the Nativity scene, the Birmingham Bears Blues band and the majestic Eiffel Tower, to name a few. From a mere dozen displays in 1995, this wonderful event has grown each year to the present dazzling extravaganza. This is an event not to be missed!

As we head into the winter months we have seen a significant increase in the number of Burlington residents needing assistance from the Burlington Food Bank. We know it takes a lot of strength to ask for assistance and believe that there are still many families that could use our help. We want you to know that with the community support we receive we are able to help with healthy nutritious food for anyone in Burlington that is struggling with groceries.
We no longer have the two drop off locations but do accept food donations at local grocery stores and the local fire halls. We would like to thank Loblaws for their #LoblawHolidayFoodDrive which began November 26 and runs until December 24, 2020. The Burlington Food Bank is grateful for the donations we receive during the holiday season, especially in a year as challenging as 2020. If you are making a trip to the grocery store (Fortinos or the No Frills brand here in Burlington) this holiday season, pick something up for yourself and a family in need, during these critical times. You can also donate to the Loblaw Holiday Food Drive by rounding up your bill and 100% of funds raised here in Burlington goes to the Burlington Food Bank!

Check out these great ways to make home fun again. • Build a pillow fort. Kids of every age love this one. I know a few grownups who do, too.

HAVE FUN OUTDOORS Being outdoors is a great way to spend quality time with the kids (and tire them out!). There are a lot of homes and public spaces that are filled with the Christmas spirit. • Do "nothing" (kind of). Give the kids some loose parts and let them have fun and get creative. • Ice excavating is soooo much fun any time of year. The ideas is to freeze interesting items inside blocks of ice for your kids to release and explore. It’s a great way to give yourself a break while the kids are "hard at work". • Geocaching is such an underestimated activity. It’s free, outdoors and filled with adventure. Plus, you can literally do it anywhere in the world! • Parks aren’t closed so go climb, slide, swing and play all day at a new-to-you park or playground. • Got snow on the ground? Get out the sleds and find a hill.
HAVE FUN INDOORS... BUT NOT AT HOME • There are indoor locations who can safely accommodate families/bubbles with a private rental to make sure you can still play. • Shop for the ones who need it the most. Buy some food items or a toy for families who are struggling this year. • Santa Claus is still making appearances, and you can see him at various locations. Bring your mask!

Chocolate Dipped
COOKIE with Candy Cane Crush!
INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIE • 1 1/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature • 1 cup icing sugar, sifted • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract) • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup cornstarch • 1/4 tsp salt FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips • 1 1/4 cups crushed candy cane
DIRECTIONS FOR THE COOKIE STEP 1. Preheat the oven to 325 F and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper. STEP 2. Beat the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the vanilla bean paste (or extract). It’s an important step to beat the butter and sugar well together when making shortbread - this ensures the shortbread will hold together and when you take a bite it will ‘snap’ and then melt away. STEP 3. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cornstarch and salt and add to the butter, mixing until blended and soft. Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or into a cookie press). Pipe cookies in to wreath shapes about 1 1/2 inches across onto the prepared baking trays and leaving an inch between each cookie. If you want a flatter cookie that spreads, bake right away. For a cookie that sits up and holds its shape, chill the piped unbaked cookies for 15 minutes before baking. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cookies just begin to brown lightly on the bottom. Cool the cookies on the trays before next step. FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP
Chef's Tip You can also use white chocolate chips if you prefer, and if you fancy another type of crushed candy - go for it!
STEP 1. Place the chocolate chips in a shallow microwave safe bowl. Melt chocolate until most of the chips are melted then remove from oven and stir to melt all the chips. Do this until the chocolate is smooth and liquid, being careful not to boil or burn the chocolate. STEP 2. Dip the bottom half of the cookie into the chocolate, let some of the chocolate drip back into the bowl until there are no more drips, then place on a wire rack. STEP 3. Have another bowl of the crushed candy canes ready to sprinkle on to the wet chocolate. STEP 4. Repeat until all the cookies are dipped and sprinkled. Let cool completely on racks. Note: This is an Anna Olson recipe for spritz cookies that I use faithfully every holiday season, but I’ve added my own twist and sparkle with the chocolate and candy canes, which is a classic holiday combination.

You’re never too young to enjoy a visit on Santa’s big red couch at the Burlington Centre. Evelyn, 17 months old, practically disappears into the sofa as she sits like a wee mouse waiting to get her picture taken. Six month old Nadia also visited Santa with her family, the Bodnars. In keeping with tradition, Santa arrived at Burlington Centre mall on Nov 21st. The jolly old fellow sits in his workshop in the mall meeting with youngsters by appointment for visits and photos. For those preferring a virtual experience, they can enjoy story time with Santa, photos with Santa including pet photos, jingle bell, Mistletoe and Holiday Magic traditions. In person visits include the following precautions to ensure safety; pre-booking of visits, Santa’s position 6 feet behind visitors, cleaning of the set between visits, required face coverings for all, and staff temperature checks and monitoring. NEW YEAR! 2020 is an extraordinary year to look back on. The pandemic dominates the news and continues to impact the entire world. We find ourselves consciously thankful for good health. We are grateful to the unceasing efforts of frontline workers who care for us and who provide the services we need on a daily basis. Who ever thought we wouldn’t leave home without a mask? That our heightened awareness of hygiene would see us frequently washing our hands, using hand sanitizer and sanitizing our homes. And keeping a social distanced 6 feet from others. But Christmas won’t be postponed even though it means temporarily altering our traditions! We can be with our loved ones through phone calls, meeting up on Zoom and WhatsApp video calls. Technology offers us a multitude of ways to connect. At this sentimental time of year we can reach out to someone who is isolated. We can donate to a Food Bank or a winter clothing drive. We can share the Christmas spirit through acts of kindness. We sincerely wish that you stay well.

Burlington honoured our nation’s veterans and fallen soldiers this past Remembrance Day with a sunrise ceremony in Spencer Smith Park and the usual observance at the Cenotaph at City Hall. Only a handful of people were invited to pay homage including veterans from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 60, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, reps of the Burlington Teen Tour Band and a Colour Guard. All attendees were masked and socially-distanced during the ceremony. Although the public were encouraged to stay home and view the live-streamed proceedings virtually this year, Mayor Meed-Ward hoped that residents would come together in their hearts and commemorate those who have dedicated their lives to protecting us and our hard-fought freedoms.
