Pedestrian Safety Month IN PEEL

SINCE 1978

Mississauga.ca

October is Pedestrian Safety Month in Peel – a community partnership involving the City of Mississauga’s Road Safety Committee, Region of Peel and Ministry of Transportation. This provincially-recognized month raises awareness and proactively addresses pedestrian safety issues for all road users. The ultimate goal is to prevent collisions and deaths on the road in Mississauga. “We know from Peel Police that 47 per cent of all collisions between pedestrians and vehicles happen when drivers are making turns at intersections while pedestrians are crossing with the right-of-way. This is not only unacceptable but preventable. We need to put an end to speeding and distracted, impaired and careless driving on our roads and in our community,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “In collaboration with our communities and partners like Peel Regional Police, we’re taking action to keep all road users safe to reduce injuries and collisions on Mississauga roadways. We’re committed to achieving Vision Zero, which means no pedestrian fatalities on our roadways. Period.” In addition to this data, this year, there have been 31 collisions that occurred in Peel Region between a vehicle and pedestrian, resulting in death or serious injury – 16 of which happened in Mississauga. As of September 1, 2018, penalties have increased for drivers who endanger pedestrians in Ontario. This includes higher fines and more demerit points for drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at crossovers and any crosswalk with a school crossing guard present, as well as new penalties for drivers who are convicted of careless driving causing death or bodily harm. By adopting Vision Zero, the City has already begun implementing many road safety initiatives. These include reducing speed limits in all neighbourhoods, implementing more traffic calming measures, installing additional pedestrian crossovers, ensuring more crossing guards are stationed in school zones and building new pedestrian and cycling facilities to improve connectivity. For more information about pedestrian safety, tips for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists or other City road safety initiatives, visit https://web.mississauga.ca/services-and-programs/ transportation-and-streets/traffic/.

Walk the Walk for The Compass By Zelia Bukhari

The time we have all been waiting for has come and gone, and The Compass is proud to announce that Walk the Walk for The Compass 2020 was a success. Even amongst these unprecedented times, residents of South Mississauga and beyond, along with volunteers and clients of The Compass came together virtually to support our largest annual fundraising event. After months of preparation, and weeks of fundraising, each registrant and team’s hard work and effort show. We have raised over $70,000 so far this year, and fundraising continues until October 1st. We can’t thank you enough for supporting Walk the Walk for The Compass 2020. Your selfless act will

change the lives of many and provide the ‘help for today, and hope for tomorrow’ needed amongst these tough times. We hope you felt the spirit of The Compass as you walked your separate walks, and we can’t wait until we can be together walking side by side again in the not so distant future.

Thank you to Edward Jones for being the major sponsor this year, and to have supported Walk the Walk for The Compass for the past few years. Thank you to our amazing Volunteers for always being thoughtful, and liberal with their time. We appreciate you very much, and none of this would have been possible without you. We are already planning next year’s Walk, so if you have any feedback please feel free to reach out to zelia@thecompass.ca.

AN EVENING TO REMEMBER BY SUSAN GIBBINS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEETER POLDRE

Stonehooker Brewing Company, a local brewery on Lakeshore Road in Port Credit, held a pilot project pairing food and beer for 20 lucky guests. It was a beautiful September evening as owner Ross Noel explained how Stonehooker came to be. Brewmaster Adam Cherry enlightened everyone on the art of beer making and Chef Callaghan Sandford served three amazing creations to complement the beer.

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

First course was a chicken and mango dish that was paired with Stonehooker’s Mango Milkshake IPA. Second course consisted of scallops paired with a delicious fruit beer, Spicy Raspberry Saison. The third course featured lamb ragout paired with one of their stout’s and an amazing deconstructed cannoli to finish things off. Live music was provided by Mickey on guitar and Michael Bones on violin. An enjoyable evening was had by all. Check out Stonehooker Brewing Company online at stonehooker.com to find all their upcoming events.

B ACK TO SCHOOL BY JASON STACEY

It’s back to school season and it’s a season unlike any other. After a very lengthy lay off due to the pandemic, students were eager to get back to their classes to see their friends and teachers and to bring back a bit of normalcy during these unprecedented times. This year, students and staff are focused on health and safety by wearing face masks, washing hands and physical distancing to help minimize the risk of direct infection and transmission of COVID19. We wish all the kids and staff a safe school year.

Sing-Along at Parkland on the Glen Article by Grace Miksa

It was a beautiful day at Parkland on the Glen in Mississauga as residents gathered around the campfire and enjoyed DELICIOUS S’MORES on a stick along with some entertainment. The Parkland Bear even settled in his tent by the campfire.
