Port Credit celebrated Remembrance Day 2020 with proper social distancing and the wearing of masks. Representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as from the Royal Canadian Legion branches, police and fire services, acknowledged their wreaths at the Cenotaph instead of placing them. Remarkably warm and sunny weather greeted the participants and onlookers as they paid respects to the fallen, at the traditional 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 102 years after the conclusion of the First World War.

Dancing with Mississauga Stars Presented, the NO-GALA, on November 6th. With the funding from a Title Sponsor, and a couple of additional Sponsors, as well as many giving volunteers, partners, and donors (about 300 viewers), the Community Foundation of Mississauga produced a spectacular presentation that was solely donation based (Zoom). The entertainment included performer Kenny V; two time JUNO Nominee, Guitarist, & Vocalist, who performed with a former board member Ray Lessard, and awardwinning Bartender Harry Hanson of Virtual Cocktail Class, who created a signature cocktail for preparation at home; and a mini dance class with champion Dmytro Gurkov of Arthur Murray Dance Studios, Mississauga. Sous chef Samantha Schiavone and Head chef Mark D’Souza of Michael’s Back Door Restaurant, provided video of a “do it yourself” chef inspired appetizer (Homemade Ricotta cheese with Beets, Grilled Fennel and Red Onion salad) for viewers who are planning an at home Watch Party. Michael Morra hosted event emcees Lisa MacLaggan of Arthur Murray Dance Centres and Jake Dheer of Rogers Media Inc to sample the appetizer. The virtual event showcased all 32 past stars in a flashback of their performances as a gratitude piece for their outstanding citizenship and support of our community. The Dancing with Mississauga Stars event over the past 7 years has generated over $640,000 net dollars. Special Guests included Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Former Mayor Hazel McCallion, and Cliff Silveira of the Mississauga Convention Centre. The event showcased three local charitable organizations; Peel Children’s Aid, Eden Food for Change and the Arabic Orchestra. Funds raised will contribute to both the Annual Impact Fund and the Mississauga Emergency Relief Fund; established early in 2020, in support of Mississauga charities struggling to maintain programming during COVID.

Chocolate Dipped
COOKIE with Candy Cane Crush!
INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIE • 1 1/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature • 1 cup icing sugar, sifted • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract) • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup cornstarch • 1/4 tsp salt FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips • 1 1/4 cups crushed candy cane
DIRECTIONS FOR THE COOKIE STEP 1. Preheat the oven to 325 F and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper. STEP 2. Beat the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the vanilla bean paste (or extract). It’s an important step to beat the butter and sugar well together when making shortbread - this ensures the shortbread will hold together and when you take a bite it will ‘snap’ and then melt away. STEP 3. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cornstarch and salt and add to the butter, mixing until blended and soft. Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or into a cookie press). Pipe cookies in to wreath shapes about 1 1/2 inches across onto the prepared baking trays and leaving an inch between each cookie. If you want a flatter cookie that spreads, bake right away. For a cookie that sits up and holds its shape, chill the piped unbaked cookies for 15 minutes before baking. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cookies just begin to brown lightly on the bottom. Cool the cookies on the trays before next step. FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP
Chef's Tip You can also use white chocolate chips if you prefer, and if you fancy another type of crushed candy - go for it!
STEP 1. Place the chocolate chips in a shallow microwave safe bowl. Melt chocolate until most of the chips are melted then remove from oven and stir to melt all the chips. Do this until the chocolate is smooth and liquid, being careful not to boil or burn the chocolate. STEP 2. Dip the bottom half of the cookie into the chocolate, let some of the chocolate drip back into the bowl until there are no more drips, then place on a wire rack. STEP 3. Have another bowl of the crushed candy canes ready to sprinkle on to the wet chocolate. STEP 4. Repeat until all the cookies are dipped and sprinkled. Let cool completely on racks. Note: This is an Anna Olson recipe for spritz cookies that I use faithfully every holiday season, but I’ve added my own twist and sparkle with the chocolate and candy canes, which is a classic holiday combination. Above is a picture of the winning artist, Barbara Chambers – a Parkland resident since June 2019. Parkland residents have been keeping artistically busy during COVID by creating these masterpieces. Residents and staff voted on which picture they felt was the best piece of artwork. The top votes were then converted to Christmas cards which Parkland is selling a set of 10 for $20. All proceeds are going to the Mississauga Fire Fighters Association Benevolent Fund. Native plants such as coneflowers, New England asters and milkweed are vital to maintain native bee populations and to recover Mississauga’s heritage of plants. Autumn is the time for seed collection. Jeanne McRight leads a group of local volunteers (www.bloomingboulevards.org) who (with special permission from the city and conservation authority) expertly collect native plant seeds and care for them over the winter in preparation for planting in the spring.

uring the fall, the usually bright-yellow American goldfinch assumes "camouflage" colouring. This makes them unassuming, even when several of them descend at the same time on a feeder filled with sunflower hearts. With a nice autumn background, an up close look reveals the beauty of their brown, black and white feathers. These photos were taken with a Nikon 80-400mm zoom telephoto lens on a Nikon D850 body at a distance of 3 meters, while the photographer was covered with a camouflage pancho.

The 4th annual Mississauga Music Awards aired virtually this past Saturday Nov 7th on mississaugamusic.com. Supported by the City of Mississauga’s Culture Division, Living Arts Centre & Canadian Community Arts Initiative, this year boasted 13 award categories & 56 nominees. A very different process from previous years due to the pandemic, the awards were secretly handed out over Zoom during September & October with the winners collecting their trophies at LAC shortly thereafter. We can support small businesses by shopping local and ordering takeout directly from the restaurant. We can share the Christmas spirit through ACTS OF KINDNESS. We sincerely wish that you stay well.
