Grimsby
AUTHOR SERIES By Teanne Teeft
This past Monday we kicked off the 18th annual Grimsby Author Series! We were delighted to launch our highly anticipated Fall 2019 season with authors Charlotte Gray and Emma Donoghue. It was so exciting to see another full house out for a fantastic night of books, wine and great conversation. Reflecting on the nearly two decades we have been running the Series, it’s great to see how the number of attendees has increased since the early days at Grimsby’s old pump house. From its beginning, sponsor Sue Tallman remembers “how cozy and intimate it was. There was only a handful of us then.” 18 years later, the series has grown with care and commitment resulting in 250 tickets purchased this last season within 48-hours for another sold out program. “I need to stop telling people—I can’t save anymore seats!” says Rita Cipriani who, along with her partner Tony, attended the evening in a group with over a dozen guests. Without the never-ending demand, the Series would not be the colossal success that it is today, with all funds supporting programming, collections, services and special events of the Grimsby Public Library. Thank you to Charlotte Gray and Emma Donoghue for sharing their phenomenal work with us and remaining afterwards to sign copies.

Talk to us about the past and future of Momentum Choir. Momentum Choir is a highly disciplined, professionally facilitated performance choir comprised of adults who live with a disability. Momentum began with a vision to create a space for musicians who live with a disability. It’s been an honour and joy to walk beside people who have grown as musicians and individuals because of Momentum Choir. We started in Niagara in 2007, branched out to Western New York in 2016 and this past September, launched a Momentum Choir

in Hamilton. We are very excited to bring the Momentum to Hamilton! If you know of anyone that might be interested in the choir, please email info@momentumchoir.ca
What brings you the greatest joy or satisfaction? I experience great joy when a group of musicians (could be a choir, group of people, my family or a Music Therapy session) works on a song and it comes together “well.” There are so many ways to define “well.” For me, “well” is when the music has reached people in a deep and profound way. It could be that someone feels better about themselves, feels better about their individual musicality or the groups musicality, feels the music in a way that they haven’t felt before or when the goal that we’ve set for a song is reached.
What’s your favourite vacation spot? A cabin in the woods where we can hike, swim, build fires and read books.
What are some fun facts about you? • I enjoy playing and watching basketball. In my first year of university, I ate peanut butter and crackers for a month to save money to buy seasons tickets for the inaugural season of the Toronto Raptors. • Due to the hard work and success of Momentum Choir, I was given the prestigious 2016 YMCA Peace Medallion. It was an honour to receive such meaningful recognition from a wonderful and important organization. • I was granted with a St. Catharines Arts Award in the Arts and Education category in 2017. • As my career as a Music Therapist continued, I realized how many talented musicians lived in Niagara. I was supporting many of them through Music Therapy. The majority of these talented musicians, who lived with a disability, didn’t have a chance to display their talents. With the help of Bethesda Community Services and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Momentum Choir, a highly disciplined, professionally facilitated performance choir, was born. We started with eight members and have grown to over 60. We rehearse each week and perform a dozen times a year. In 2016, Momentum Choir grew and started a brandchise in Western New York. Our hope is that one day, each community has a Momentum Choir so that those living with a disability have a chance to give back to the community through music.
What is one thing very few people know about you? I know every word to every song that the Barenaked Ladies have released. Listening to BNL is my guilty pleasure.
Above: Mendelt named 2016 YMCA Peace Medallion Recipient.
What is the best advice you’ve been given? I was in the middle of a job interview when one of the people said to me, “Mendelt, I think you are successful because you know how unimportant you are.” That advice has always stayed with me.
What does the word ‘Community’ mean to you? A place where each voice is heard. In my opinion, I think that St. Catharines and the Region of Niagara is successful in that. No community is whole unless all its voices are heard.
If the whole community were listening, what would you say to them? In my world, the word ‘inclusion’ is often spoken. Sometimes, affirmation is masked as inclusion. I believe there is a tangible difference between affirmation and inclusion. While affirmation has its merits and is nice to hear, sometimes it doesn’t go far enough. When I’m complimented on dreaming, scheming and implementing Momentum Choir to what it is today, that’s affirmation. When the classic rock band, Foreigner (yes, that Foreigner, the band who has sold more than 80 million albums, I Want to Know What Love Is) does an internet search, sees the support and inclusivity that the people of Niagara have given Momentum Choir and invites Momentum Choir to sing with them on back to back sold out shows in Niagara Falls, that’s inclusion! Thank you, people of Niagara! If you haven’t experienced Momentum Choir, you’re missing out on a unique and fun experience that will propel you to have a greater appreciation for the human spirit. If you have seen Momentum Choir before, tell someone about it. Either way, come out for our next show. ■

Simply Moto’s 2nd MOTORCYCLE SOCIAL and FOOD DRIVE on September 29th was a great day for the riding community. Even SideCar Benny, the four-legged furry friend didn’t want to miss out on meeting other riders and checking out the different style of bikes. A special THANK YOU to Simply Moto and the riders who attended the social for donating 50.40KG of food and $32.41 in cash donations in support of the GBF Food Bank. And that’s quite a feat since not all bikes have storage space. We greatly appreciate all the support.
Spirits with
SPIRITS By Grimsby Museum
On October 1st the Grimsby Museum hosted Spirits with Spirits in partnership with MONA (Museums of Niagara Association). The evening was brought to life through community collaborations and spooky entertainment. Guests enjoyed a variety of beverages, food and ghostly fun. Peninsula Players Community Theatre Group actors gave a thrilling performance inspired by true events that happened in Grimsby. The costumed Peninsula Players told eerie stories of accidents that happened to people buried at Queen’s Lawn Cemetery in Grimsby. Some of the research for their scripts was taken from the Grimsby Museum’s archival collection. Guests enjoyed a seasonal menu prepared by Smoke and Moonshine from Beamsville featuring pulled beef brisket, homemade coleslaw, fresh biscuits and whiskey maple bacon butter tarts.

THE
Bruce Trail BY RUTH D. MOFFATT
Trekking along that endless trail, my goal was 900 km away. Once achieved, a new goal presented itself to me, 5-times the distance of the last. “Yes!” I thought,“ let’s hike the Bruce Trail five times and let’s do it in five years.” In May of 2013, on a whim, I decided to hike the Niagara section of the Bruce Trail. The trail consisted of an 80km stretch and I was determined to do it in 3 consecutive days. Truthfully, I was in way over my head, but along the way I met some people who both inspired and motivated me. Dan, who coordinated the event and encouraged non-members to join the club and Fred, who was 77 at the time, led the way down the trail. I count Dan and Fred as the driving forces behind my goal’s achievement. I took some time off after those first three days, knowing my leave to be temporary. Upon my return to the trail, I was filled with undaunted determination and I’m pleased to say, I completed my goal in May of this year. During my 8-day hike in the Bruce Peninsula, I was lucky enough to have 7 friends and a very supportive husband by my side.
Like many enjoyable things, hiking and the Bruce Trail gets a hold of you. What could be better than being outside, enjoying fresh air and the ever-changing flora? Why not enjoy the seasons and spend time with friends? Not to mention the health benefits. I was completely addicted. Over the last five years, I became very involved in the Bruce Trail. I joined the Niagara Board two years ago and sit on two committees at the Bruce Trail Conservancy. I also lead about 15 hikes each year and I’ve raised close to $20k for trail securement. The Bruce Trail is practically in our backyard and yet many are unaware of the history or even the length of the trail. The Bruce Trail was 50 years old in 2017 and runs almost entirely along the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere. If you haven’t already discovered the Bruce Trail, please take a hike and bring your camera. You never know what you’ll see along the trail of white blazes. Blend using an emersion blender or transfer to a blender and blend until smooth.

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
STEP 4. In the meantime, make the Kale Coconut Tangle (optional). Place the coconut in a frying pan over medium heat and toast until golden, about 5 minutes, then transfer to a plate or bowl. Add the oil, heat. Add the kale and toss in oil. Continue tossing until the kale has wilted and begins to get a little crunchy, about 5-10 minutes. Add the coconut back into the frying pan with the kale, toss together and shut the heat off, set aside. STEP 5. Distribute the soup between 4 bowls, drizzle a tsp of coconut milk over each bowl and top with a pinch of Kale Coconut Tangle, if using.
This soup is so easy to make and if you don’t make the Kale Coconut Tangle, you will likely already have everything you need in the pantry. If you don’t have access to a blender, chop the onions really small and you won’t notice them in the finished product. Serves 4 Ingredients • 2 tbsp Olive Oil • 1 Onion, diced • 1 Clove Garlic, minced • 3 cups of Pureed Pumpkin, from a 796 ml can or DYI cooked pumpkin • 3 cups low/no Sodium Vegetable or Chicken Stock • 1 cup Canned Light Coconut Milk (reserve some of the remaining milk for a drizzle on each bowl) • 2 tbsp Pure Maple Syrup • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon • 1/4 tsp Chili Powder, optional FOR THE KALE COCONUT TANGLE • 2 tbsp shredded Unsweetened Coconut • 1 tbsp Grapeseed Oil • 1 cup shredded Kale • 2 tbsp Canned Light Coconut Milk to drizzle on the bowls of soup
