FIFT Y Q U I LT E R S M A K ING A DIFFER ENCE Almost twenty-three years ago, a small group of local ladies in Winona came together to share their interest in quilting. Today, Fifty Quilters are working together to make a difference in combatting COVID-19. BY JANE FRANKS
In the early days, the group taught new members the art of quilting and before long, beautiful quilts were being created singularly and together as a group. One of these early quilts hangs today in the upper hall at Fifty United Church. Another work of pride hangs in the foyer of the east entrance of the church. Soon the ladies decided to put their skills to good use and began making “lap quilts” for all ages and donating them. These creations have been most welcomed and have brought much joy to their recipients. Over the years, this creative and ambitious group has donated well over 600 quilts to a variety of groups and charities including Quilts of Valour (returning veterans from Afghanistan suffering from PTSD and other injuries), Rose Cottage Palliative, Syrian Refugee families, Long Term Care Homes and Woman’s Shelters, to name a few. Recently, their group sessions were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, always ready to lend a hand, Fifty Quilters members have been busy sewing from home, making face masks for individuals and for the St. Catharine’s General Hospital, West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and McNally House. Our hearts are full when we make a difference for others.

Today, they are experiencing the extraordinary changes with the COVID-19 pandemic. They speak to each other daily by phone, even though they live only two townhouses away from each other. They take turns cooking for each other and leave the prepared food and magazines at the front door. They are currently social distancing from each other, waving and blowing kisses through the glass window. We thank these two beautiful ladies for their role in stopping the spread of this virus.

HOW TO SUPPORT
SM ALL B USINESSES IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES Thousands of businesses across Canada are feeling the financial strain of the coronavirus after closing their doors to uphold social distancing practices. For small business owners suddenly deprived of customers, any support from the local community can spell the difference between surviving the pandemic and closing their doors forever.

Here are some ways you can help support small businesses during this trying time. Buy Online While some local restaurants have opted to close their doors to weather the outbreak, many restaurants are offering delivery and pickup, but check for delivery options at places other than restaurants. Your local hardware store, flower shop, bookstore or clothing boutique may not have their usual storefront, but many are providing delivery or curbside pickup.
Buy Gift Cards Purchasing a gift card to your favourite shop, theatre or restaurant is an immediate way to put cash into a business. Gift cards can go toward helping cash flow in these uncertain times.
See if Local Studios are offering Video Classes Quarantine life can get dull. Check out local exercise studios to see if they are offering livestream classes. You can also hire a financial planner, therapist, tax accountant, personal trainer, or music teacher right now ― they’re all providing services online.
Leave Good Reviews A word of support can also go a long way for stressed-out business owners. Go online to post positive reviews. Reach out by social media, e-mail, phone call, or whatever mechanism you have to tell them that you support them and when all of this is over, you’ll be there at their door.
Now might be a good time for Home Projects or Repairs If you’ve been meaning to put up a fence, do a bit of landscaping, replace some windows or tackle any other project that doesn’t take more than a few people to complete, find a local handyman or service to help. On-site auto mechanics are also available if you need them.
Tip Extra Generously, if you can Delivery workers are especially vulnerable to contracting coronavirus, given the nature of their work. If you can afford to tip 40% or even more, delivery workers would appreciate it. And if you’re worried about coming face to face with the delivery worker, ask them to put the bag on your front doorstep instead.
Share Your Knowledge via Social Media If you learn of a unique promotion or idea from a local business, share it online. Businesses are providing decorating and baking kits for kids and their parents, with curb side pickup. Because local businesses usually don’t have huge marketing efforts, their customers can help spread the word through social media.
Be Creative With much more free time than usual, use that time to be creative. Start an online contest / drawing for local business gift cards and services and promote it online and on social media. Each week, draw a winner and share the results. Just how long these small businesses will have to scale back operations is unclear, but ultimately, it’s going to be up to us, the local communities, and customers, to support them. Please do your part and stay safe.

Where THERES A WILL ̦
theres a way! Article and Photography By Kristi Finch (Will’s Mother)
Meet 10 year old animal ambassador, WILL FINCH. At the age of 7, Will’s dreams of having a dog came true when his family brought home a puppy. His Mom named the puppy ‘Karma’ and explained to Will what ‘good karma’ meant. To be fair, at that time, the name of the puppy meant very little to Will. The only thing he could think of was loving his adorable new puppy.
Karma and Will were inseparable. They walked together, played together and Karma was always on his pillow at bedtime. After a few short weeks, Karma took a rather sudden and drastic turn towards illness. The Vet shared devastating news that Karma had the canine Parvovirus and likely was too small and young to survive. Regrettably, Karma died days later at home with his family. Although everyone was heartbroken, it hit Will the hardest. Through his tears, Will described that he felt “his heart was breaking inside his tummy.” Only then did he reflect on the name ‘Karma’. He felt that this was somehow ‘bad karma’ and he struggled with understanding why this happened to his dog and our family.
10
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
From this loss, Will set off on a mission to bring some ‘Good Will Good Karma’ to other animals. On his 8th birthday, in lieu of birthday presents, Will wished only for donations of food, supplies and money to donate to local animals in need. Since then, he has been making waves (or wagging tails) throughout the rescue community by showing up at events to volunteer and then surprising the rescues with generous donations.
Now, just 10 years old, Will has raised and donated close to $5,000! He volunteers his time as a cat cuddler for ‘All Paws Cat Rescue’, hosts bake sales, and helps with dog walking and care for ‘Fetch and ReLeash Dog Rescue’. Will also posts videos to feature animals in need of adoption and gives presentations about his rescues to various classes at his school (Levi Creek Public School). Will’s school and teachers have been an incredible support of his mission to rescue and educate.
Will has been featured on the radio station BOOM 97.3 and he recently appeared on Breakfast Television. He has social media campaigns on Facebook and Instagram managed by his big sister, Jada. ‘Good Will Good Karma’ also has a ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign. Will is honouring his dog Karma by inspiring and educating others of all ages to volunteer, donate, rescue, adopt and to be kind to animals.
COVID-19: A note from ‘Good Will Good Karma’ During this pandemic, rescues are struggling with donations as they aren’t able to run their usual community based fundraising events. Funds are low and demand for care is increasing dramatically. Rescues are working around the clock to do what they can but they need our help. In response, Will has initiated Facebook campaigns as well as a donation bin on our front porch.
IF YOU WISH TO MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION, please go to our ‘Go Fund Me’ page (TUIT Tasks is paying the 3% admin fee charge) or you can e-transfer funds to willkarma2010@gmail.com. 100% of every dollar goes to our local rescues. Every dollar helps! /goodwillgoodkarma

he last few weeks have brought many sudden, stressful changes to our lives. As human beings adapting to these changes, we may be feeling confusion, sadness and uncertainty, which in turn affects our pets. Dogs, like people, are creatures of habit and following a daily routine gives them structure and confidence. If you are mainly at home during this pandemic, try to keep your dog’s schedule intact as much as you can. The schedule of activities such as walks, crate time,

meals, play and naptime should remain as consistent as possible while developing new rituals and routines. Consistency will help your dog adapt to changes such as you (and the rest of your family) being home during the day and will also ease the transition later on when things are more stable and you go back to work/school. So, as we navigate through these challenging times, be mindful of your pets and their own routines to ensure their mental and physical health. www.doggieinthewindow.ca

Why does GBF Community Services need your support at this time? • Vulnerable families can’t afford to stock up food for days. With your help, we will ensure they have enough. • Grocery stores are having a hard time keeping their own shelves stocked, so donations of non-perishable and fresh food are not coming through our doors. We need to rely heavily on purchasing at this time.
C O V I D -1 9 R ESPONSE FR OM GB F BY STACY ELIA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GBF COMMUNITY SERVICES
Like you, we here at GBF are navigating a new reality. The growing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic is an important public health matter and one that GBF Community Services is taking seriously. We are aware that the situation is changing daily and are doing our part to take preventative steps. We are committed to doing all we can to protect our community while continuing service to the many individuals and families that rely on us for their basic necessities of life. Our priority is staying healthy and ensuring there is no disruption in service for the people in need in Grimsby.
• With schools closed, your gift will help families provide meals usually received at school or in after school clubs • Our retail operation is temporarily closed. This is a loss in revenue that supports our services delivered through the food bank.
Providing food and services to those in need can be very difficult at the best of times. With COVID-19, that task just got harder. The GBF team of staff continues to be leaders in our community in providing essential services to those that live with food insecurity in Grimsby. Since this pandemic began, we have distributed $33,402.98 in funding for Emergency Housing supports, utility supports, and medical supports. We need your continued commitment for those who need us most. Anyone requiring assistance or have questions at this time, please contact us at 905-309-5664 ext. 22 to further discuss.
