he Bufflehead duck is North America’s smallest diving duck. In winter’s typical cloudy weather, it appears as a blackwhite duck with a rapid flight take-off. However, sunny skies reveal a rainbow of colour in the male. Photo taken with a Nikon D850 and a Nikkor telephoto lens at 400mm.

Spring
ABOVE OUR HEADS Story by Bruce Mackenzie
‘Red-shouldered Hawk’ by Russ Brown
Even before winter is over, the skies of Grimsby welcome the beginning of the spring hawk migration. Grimsby is known as the best spot in Ontario to view this migration at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area, which sits atop the Escarpment, providing a prime location for hawk watchers. Hawk is a generic term for a group of birds, which include buteos, accipiters, falcons, eagles, harriers, ospreys and vultures. The hawks we see at Beamer may be coming from as close as the northern United States and as far south as South America. Some species are heading for the Arctic while most are heading north for more distant parts of Ontario and eastern Canada.

Rough-legged Hawk
Since the early 1970’s, members of the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH) have been monitoring the hawks at Beamer from March 1st to May 15th from 9am to 5pm every day. Up to 15,000 hawks are counted and 16 different species could be seen. Some species, like the Broad-winged Hawk, have a very definite time period when they migrate through Grimsby near the 22nd of April. Red-shouldered Hawks migrate mostly in March while Red-tailed Hawks might be seen on any day. The majority of the birds fly through from mid March to the end of April.

‘Coppers Hawk’ by Tom Thomas
Over the last 46 years of monitoring by the NPH, many changes have been seen. In the 1970’s, about 350 Turkey Vultures arrived each spring but now we expect to count over 7,000. Bald Eagles have made significant gains while species like Sharp-shinned Hawks have declined. Interestingly, in just the last couple of years Black Vultures have started to appear. Keeping track of these numbers is important for scientists to observe trends in the populations. The data from the NPH is submitted to the Hawk Migration Association of North America. This work helps follow what is happening to hawk populations across North America. ‘Bald Eagle’ by Jenny Kirkhart
Hawks on their spring and fall migrations fly around the Great Lakes. In the spring they fly along the south shore of Lake Ontario past Grimsby. They will also follow large geographical formations like the Appalachian Mountains and the Niagara Escarpment. Something special happens at Grimsby. Here, the escarpment is at its steepest in Niagara and it is also at its closest point to Lake Ontario. These two features act to concentrate the flight right over Beamer for the 75-day flight period. Hawks migrate during the day hoping to catch a ride on warm upwellings of air called thermals.

We could all use a little more friendship, even from a distance, and Community Pen Pals is one way to make new friends in our community. Launched in January by the Grimsby Public Library and West Lincoln Public Library, Community Pen Pals matches seniors in care homes or living independently with adults, families, or school classes for the purpose of exchanging letters. All new pen pals receive a starter pack with a welcome letter, four postcards, and the first name of their pen pal to get the friendly correspondence started.
Grimsby
COMMUNITY PEN PALS “Pen pals drop their letters off at the library through the book return box - no stamps required - and we quarantine them before we send them on,” says Simone Saunders of Children’s Services Coordinator at the Grimsby Public Library. “This protects their health and using only first names protects their identity at the start of a new friendship.” Response to the program has been enthusiastic. Pen Pal, Alyssa Seul, decided to participate because she knows how her grandparents have been struggling with the isolation caused by the pandemic, “I think it is so critical to health and wellness to be able to have human connection right now. What an amazing idea to promote a healthier community.” 8

Care homes also welcome this opportunity to bring friendship to their residents. “Deer Park Villa is thrilled to participate,” says Lisa Rozon, Program Manager at Deer Park Villa Nursing Home in Grimsby. “It’s a great opportunity for our long term care residents to remain socially engaged during this challenging time and to exchange letters with someone else in the community, who might also feel socially isolated. It’s a win-win situation!”
"FRIENDSHIPS CAN BE MADE DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME," SAYS SIMONE. "A LETTER, A CARD, OR EVEN A DRAWING WILL BRIGHTEN A PEN PAL’S DAY." For information about Community Pen Pals, contact Simone Saunders at ssaunders@grimsby.ca or Loraine Drilling at ldrilling@westlincolnlibrary.ca.

INGREDIENTS • 1 pre-made pizza dough, uncooked • 6 slices of prosciutto, cut into smaller strips • 3 peaches washed, dried and sliced into 1/4” wedges, skin left on • 3/4 cup crumbled blue cheese into 1/4” pieces
PEACH + PROSCIU Flatbread
• 1 cup arugula • 3 tbsp maple syrup • fresh ground pepper
Prep Time: 45 minutes ı Serves: 4
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425°F STEP 1. Generously grease a large sheet pan with oil. STEP 2. Remove the pizza dough from bag, and using oiled hands, stretch the dough out as thin as possible from the centre of the dough to a flatbread type shape, but it could fill the entire sheet pan. STEP 3. Once you have shaped the dough, let it rest for about 10 minutes. STEP 4. Dock the dough generously with a fork, and then place in middle of the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or just until crust starts to turn a light golden. STEP 5. While the dough is baking, prepare the rest of the ingredients. STEP 6. Once the dough is par baked, take out and set oven to broil. STEP 7. Arrange the peach slices and the blue cheese on the flatbread. STEP 8. Place the flatbread back into middle of the oven, and bake until cheese is melty and peaches are softened, and crust is a deeper golden brown (about 3-5 minutes). STEP 9. Remove flatbread from the oven and place the prosciutto and arugula on top, then drizzle the maple syrup, and add fresh ground pepper. Cut, serve, and enjoy! NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

NELLES MANOR – MUSEUM THE FIRST 5 YEARS
DURING 2021, Nelles Manor Museum will be celebrating the first five years of the young museum contained within a 233 year old United Empire Loyalist Manor. The museum is a meticulously restored early Upper Canada house where visitors are invited to enter the home of the Nelles family. Walking through the door is like stepping back in time. The museum contains a wonderful collection of period furnishings, family heirlooms, art and the original kitchen with open hearth cooking. It is also the oldest continuously inhabited residence between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Kingston. The Manor and grounds are also a recognized Battle Site for the War of 1812. "The birth of Nelles Manor Museum as a stand-alone, non-profit charitable entity has been arduous and painful, but like most births, the end result has been worth the effort. It is our hope that the Nelles Manor Museum will grow and develop continuously, and solidify its place in the community," explains Linda Coutts - Manor donor, board member and volunteer. 12
NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
Over the past five years as the Nelles Manor Museum grew and evolved they were able to achieve so much because of three main factors. First, the museum could not have existed without the initial donation of the Manor and property from the Coutts family and their constant and ongoing support. Secondly, from the beginning there has been a dedicated and enthusiastic group of volunteers that have organized and supported the many events, tours, programming and outreach. Lastly, they have received tremendous financial support from local groups such as Rotary, government student employment programs, the Niagara Community Foundation, Niagara Region and many generous individuals all of whom have supported the events, programs and the extensive costs of maintaining a property that dates back to 1788.
"WE HAVE ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE PROPERTIES IN THE PROVINCE," says Bill Thompson – board member and volunteer.
"Home of one of the first United Empire Loyalists in the area, built by a man who served as a senior officer in the local Militia; as an elected member in the initial Legislatures of Upper Canada, and also served his community in a number of roles such as Magistrate and Justice of the Peace."
The Nelles Manor Museum has hosted a number of commemorations for local historically significant events. In 2018 they celebrated the Victory Ball that was held at the Manor at the end of the War of 1812. The recognition of the importance "The Forty" (Grimsby) played in that war with the "Engagement at the Forty" was celebrated in 2019. "Military re-enactors bring out the roots of the Nelles family and their involvement in the War of 1812, and more. The soldiers’ attendance in our events is always a highlight, and so fitting to the history. When Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell visited Grimsby to present the Prince of Wales Award for history to our town, the Manor hosted the occasion. How special was that!" Linda Coutts.
Open Hearth Cooking Class with Julia Baird (2018)
Past events include: Mother’s Day and Harvest Teas, ghost tours, Christmas Candlelight celebrations, quilt shows, open hearth cooking classes and much more. There are also tours available anytime.
"THE CORE OF VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE HOUSE SING WITH THEIR CHEERY EFFORTS AS TOUR GUIDES, TEA MAKERS AND HOSTS. IT IS EXCITING TO FAMILIARIZE GUESTS WITH THE HOUSE’S STORIES," commented Linda Coutts.
Ghost Tour (2018)
Much has taken place at this museum and there is more to come. Nelles Manor stands as a beacon of history, not only of Grimsby but also its early life and development. Its architecture is a tribute to those who built it over 23 decades ago. Nelles Manor Museum’s daily tour season opens Victoria Day weekend until Labour Day. Speciality tours and events take place all year round.

Her perfect home has a fenced yard, no children under 16 years old and no other dogs in the household. Her adopters should be loving and want to include their dog in their day-to-day activities. She also loves to just lay at your feet.
