A day home with the kids is an opportunity to do something great together... but what?! We have some fun ideas for things to do on a PA Day! HAVE FUN AT HOME Staying home can be awesome! Check out these great ways to make home fun again. • Build a pillow fort. Kids of every age love this one. I know a few grownups who do, too.

• Play a board game or build a craft kit.
• Set up a hot chocolate bar: marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, cookie crumbles, and more! Just a

HAVE FUN OUTDOORS Being outdoors is a great way to spend quality time with the kids (and tire them out!). Here are a few ideas to get you and the kids outside. • Walk around your neighbourhood and check out all the lights and decorations. There are a lot of homes and public spaces that are filled with the Christmas spirit. • Do "nothing" (kind of). Give the kids some loose parts and let them have fun and get creative. • Ice excavating is soooo much fun any time of year. The ideas is to freeze interesting items inside blocks of ice for your kids to release and explore. It’s a great way to give yourself a break while the kids are "hard at work". • Geocaching is such an underestimated activity. It’s free, outdoors and filled with adventure. Plus, you can literally do it anywhere in the world! • Parks aren’t closed so go climb, slide, swing and play all day at a new-to-you park or playground. • Got snow on the ground? Get out the sleds and find a hill.
HAVE FUN INDOORS... BUT NOT AT HOME • There are indoor locations who can safely accommodate families/bubbles with a private rental to make sure you can still play. • Shop for the ones who need it the most. Buy some food items or a toy for families who are struggling this year. • Santa Claus is still making appearances, and you can see him at various locations. Bring your mask!

NEW YEAR! 2020 is an extraordinary year to look back on. The pandemic dominates the news and continues to impact the entire world. We find ourselves consciously thankful for good health. We are grateful to the unceasing efforts of frontline workers who care for us and who provide the services we need on a daily basis. Who ever thought we wouldn’t leave home without a mask? That our heightened awareness of hygiene would see us frequently washing our hands, using hand sanitizer and sanitizing our homes. And keeping a social distanced 6 feet from others. But Christmas won’t be postponed even though it means temporarily altering our traditions! We can be with our loved ones through phone calls, meeting up on Zoom and WhatsApp video calls. Technology offers us a multitude of ways to connect. At this sentimental time of year we can reach out to someone who is isolated. We can donate to a Food Bank or a winter clothing drive. We can share the Christmas spirit through acts of kindness. We sincerely wish that you stay well.

Exciting New Waterfront Development On November 16th, 2020, at a Special Council Meeting,
Grimsby Council endorsed Committee of Whole’s recommendation who voted unanimously to approve a key next step in an exciting new development at the former Fifth Wheel Truck Stop site at Casablanca Boulevard. This development will include the continuation of the waterfront trail and the creation of state-of-the-art park amenities. This thoughtful plan transitions the site from a truck stop, gas bar and car wash to a fully animated waterfront community with public spaces, and transforming underutilized waterfront lands into a community amenity while providing much needed housing for our growing region. Consideration of the Losani Homes application was undertaken through a Council initiated, rigorous due diligence and peer review process in order to ensure that community input into opportunities to optimize parking, greenspaces, office and restaurant concepts and height were all considered in the best of interest of residents.
The plan includes: • 33 waterfront townhomes • 6 buildings that will be 12, 14, 14, 14, 18 and 22 stories high, respectively. They will contain approximately 1,254 suites with panoramic waterfront or escarpment views. • At lower levels, restaurants, retail and office space will help to create a liveable and walkable community that celebrates the waterfront as its heart, only a short walk away from the planned Casablanca GO train station. The bulk of the height of the development will be stepped back towards the QEW to preserve as much greenspace as possible along the waterfront. The public open spaces will provide direct access to the Lakefront beach for all Grimsby residents. The plan also offers generous view corridors, a publicly accessible corridor and other community amenities. Town staff have and continue to work to conceptualize the waterfront park and will be reaching out to the community for their input. Public engagement will be a key component to the delivery of the park and additional community benefits which will also be an outcome of this project. Next steps include the fulfilment of the conditions related to the project as well as the submission of detailed design drawings and the site plan application which will be brought back to Council for approval. COOKIE with Candy Cane Crush!

INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIE • 1 1/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature • 1 cup icing sugar, sifted • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract) • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup cornstarch • 1/4 tsp salt FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips • 1 1/4 cups crushed candy cane
DIRECTIONS FOR THE COOKIE STEP 1. Preheat the oven to 325 F and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper. STEP 2. Beat the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the vanilla bean paste (or extract). It’s an important step to beat the butter and sugar well together when making shortbread - this ensures the shortbread will hold together and when you take a bite it will ‘snap’ and then melt away.
Chef's Tip You can also use white chocolate chips if you prefer, and if you fancy another type of crushed candy - go for it!
STEP 3. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cornstarch and salt and add to the butter, mixing until blended and soft. Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or into a cookie press). Pipe cookies in to wreath shapes about 1 1/2 inches across onto the prepared baking trays and leaving an inch between each cookie. If you want a flatter cookie that spreads, bake right away. For a cookie that sits up and holds its shape, chill the piped unbaked cookies for 15 minutes before baking. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cookies just begin to brown lightly on the bottom. Cool the cookies on the trays before next step. FOR THE CHOCOLATE DIP STEP 1. Place the chocolate chips in a shallow microwave safe bowl. Melt chocolate until most of the chips are melted then remove from oven and stir to melt all the chips. Do this until the chocolate is smooth and liquid, being careful not to boil or burn the chocolate. STEP 2. Dip the bottom half of the cookie into the chocolate, let some of the chocolate drip back into the bowl until there are no more drips, then place on a wire rack. STEP 3. Have another bowl of the crushed candy canes ready to sprinkle on to the wet chocolate. STEP 4. Repeat until all the cookies are dipped and sprinkled. Let cool completely on racks. Note: This is an Anna Olson recipe for spritz cookies that I use faithfully every holiday season, but I’ve added my own twist and sparkle with the chocolate and candy canes, which is a classic holiday combination. There are many opportunities available at GBF Community Services and we welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss your areas of interest. Our volunteers have flexible shifts during business hours: Monday to Friday 9:30am – 4:30pm Saturday 9:30am – 4:30pm We need you, yes you! Even an hour makes a difference. There are other volunteer opportunities outside of these hours and we ask you to speak with us if regular business hours do not work with your schedule. We have food drives in the Spring and at Christmas and need help during these times.
