WITH IN 2021
H
ello and a Happy New Year, readers! Hopefully everyone was able to take some much needed time away from work to enjoy family time over the holidays and on Christmas Day. My family was able to hold an outdoor event with warming fires and barbecuing to keep us cozy and fed. I can certainly say that the past 20 or so Christmas Day celebrations have followed the same basic routine and that none of them paticularly stick out in my memory. This one, however, will always be remembered as it was so different than the rest. I was certainly thankful for the snowfall that came to give us a white Christmas and gave us outdoor activity options that only a blanket of snow can provide. We as a family enjoy winter activities such as tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, hockey and much more. As long as you are dressed for the winter cold, it can be a very picturesque and enjoyable experience outdoors. We as a city have facilitated the addition of 15 outdoor neighborhood rinks and 2 additional GLICE rinks (artificial plastic ice) to encourage outdoor skating and activity. My family was able to book an hour at the GLICE rink located at Hidden Valley Park, which feels like natural ice but can be used all year round. Burlington has also added many options

for borrowing equipment to try out a new activity. For more information, please visit http://www.burlington.ca/playlending As many of you are aware, I am also a small business owner and have owned and operated The Fitness Firm for 23 years. This year has been our most challenging year to date due to the ongoing restrictions imposed on small businesses, gatherings and the economy as a whole. We have had to rely on much government aid to survive the closures and restrictions to operations but I am thankful that we live in a country that is willing and has the means to support small business during this pandemic. All three levels of government are doing what they can to support small business. I have made it my personal goal to do as much as I can to assist and support small business-
es in our municipality, and I encourage all business owners to take advantage of the supports being offered. Some of the applications are tedious but can be worth the time and effort to support losses suffered due to restrictions or closures. Please feel free to reach out to my office for any support you may need in filling out applications by emailing ward1@burlington.ca For more information on supports available to businesses, please visit https://investburlington.ca/covid19/ As we continue to make our way through the latest rounds of restrictions and closures, I encourage all residents to continue to follow health recommendations, so we can bring our case numbers down and hopefully soon return to some semblance of normal. And as always: be kind, shop local and stay safe!

he Bufflehead duck is North America’s smallest diving duck. In winter’s typical cloudy weather, it appears as a blackwhite duck with a rapid flight take-off. However, sunny skies reveal a rainbow of colour in the male. Photo taken with a Nikon D850 and a Nikkor telephoto lens at 400mm.

Burlington’s
Photographer Robert Todd of Burlington, can find photographic inspiration everywhere. His preferred subjects are natural landscapes, but he also loves to take editorial shots and capture street scenes where his pictures can really tell a story. His eye for composition and lighting has developed over years of practice and he credits his technical knowledge to the Sheridan College Digital Photography courses he took while he was recuperating from a serious illness.
In 2018, Robert was the recipient of a Burlington Arts & Culture grant for his project ‘Burlington, A City through the Seasons’. The exhibition included 16 of his framed images which were on display at multiple locations across Burlington including City Hall, the Performing Arts Centre, and the Tourism Burlington Visitor Centre. The photos featured many of the city’s most beautiful, walkable, bikeable, and transit accessible locations which are free to visit and photograph year round.
You can find examples of his work in the Burlington Official Visitors Guide as well as in the City of Burlington postcards / E-postcards, offered through Tourism Burlington. Recently, several of his photos were displayed on Tourism Burlington’s Instagram page as the featured artist during Tourism week (May 25th - May 30th 2020).

INGREDIENTS • 1 pre-made pizza dough, uncooked • 6 slices of prosciutto, cut into smaller strips • 3 peaches washed, dried and sliced into 1/4” wedges, skin left on • 3/4 cup crumbled blue cheese into 1/4” pieces • 1 cup arugula • 3 tbsp maple syrup • fresh ground pepper
Prep Time: 45 minutes ı Serves: 4
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425°F STEP 1. Generously grease a large sheet pan with oil. STEP 2. Remove the pizza dough from bag, and using oiled hands, stretch the dough out as thin as possible from the centre of the dough to a flatbread type shape, but it could fill the entire sheet pan. STEP 3. Once you have shaped the dough, let it rest for about 10 minutes. STEP 4. Dock the dough generously with a fork, and then place in middle of the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or just until crust starts to turn a light golden. STEP 5. While the dough is baking, prepare the rest of the ingredients. STEP 6. Once the dough is par baked, take out and set oven to broil. STEP 7. Arrange the peach slices and the blue cheese on the flatbread. STEP 8. Place the flatbread back into middle of the oven, and bake until cheese is melty and peaches are softened, and crust is a deeper golden brown (about 3-5 minutes). STEP 9. Remove flatbread from the oven and place the prosciutto and arugula on top, then drizzle the maple syrup, and add fresh ground pepper. Cut, serve, and enjoy! NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
