The Knitting

PILGRIM Photography by Georgia Kirkos of Jorjas Photography

On June 1st, Kirk Dunn performed the Knitting Pilgrim at Knox Presbyterian Church. The Knitting Pilgrim is a multidisciplinary, one-person theatrical experience that uses storytelling, image projection and a oneof-a-kind textile installation called Stitched Glass. The textile masterwork was supported by a Chalmers Foundation grant through the Ontario Arts Council in 2003 and took Kirk 15 years to complete. There is no other knitting project like it in the world. For more information, visit ergoartstheatre.com or kirkdunn.com.

What inspired you to launch Elite Granite?

I grew up with family working in the stone industry so stone was always of interest. Eventually I came to work for shops throughout my teen years building great rapport with customers. I felt restricted with the service and services I could provide and knew if I was to open my own shop, I would be able to be fully committed and in such provide an elite experience for my clients.

What type of materials and services do you offer to your customers?

We work with Granite, Marble, Limestone, Recycled Glass and of course Quartz. Specializing in fabrication and installation. We also provide sinks, faucets, and backsplash.

Tell us about your renovation process? What are the first steps?

It’s best to start with a plan. We encourage our clients to come in and meet with one of our staff to get all their ideas on paper. From there, we can narrow down what material and style will best suit their needs and homes.

What separates you from your competition?

ELITE GRANITE & MARBLE Renovations can be a nightmare so you want to make sure the company you hired to tackle your project is trustworthy and capable. Introducing Elite Granite & Marble, a custom stone fabricator located in Milton with a reputation for getting the job done right and on time. Their experience in unique and complex projects make them the first choice when it comes to something as simple as installing a shelf or the most intricate kitchen. Regardless of the job, Elite Granite & Marble can meet all your renovation and remodelling needs.

Having worked for other companies, I have had a chance to see some of what does and doesn’t work. I have adapted the positive traits and apply them to ensure elite customer service and quality workmanship is provided.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to redesign his or her space with new stone?

Go with what YOU like. Often friends and family can influence our decisions, but when choosing a stone and style, it’s important that we remember it’s you, the client that will be enjoying the redesign for years to come, not others.

What are some of the most challenging types of projects you’ve encountered and how did you overcome them?

The most challenging part can often be time lines. We recently had a man contact us as he wanted to surprise his wife with a “new kitchen” for their anniversary. The catch was that it was in 3 days! He had a dinner planned with his kids and wanted to bring her home to a new

kitchen. We came up with a plan, without her knowing, got in to measure and we were able to pull off the stealth installation.

What is trending right now in your industry?

We see a variety, but I would have to say the light coloured Quartz is taking the lead with modern square edge over the previously desired Victorian Ogee edging with exotic granite colours.

What is the most unusual renovation request you’ve had?

Floating Material. After further discussion we understood the client wanted a quartz wall shelf comparing it to an IKEA floating shelf and fireplace mantel. We fabricated and installed a shelf and mantel that gave the illusion of floating material.

What areas do you serve?

We serve but are not limited to GTA, Halton Hills, Niagara Falls, etc. We have even traveled to Muskoka and the Bruce Peninsula.

I’ve read many of your reviews and people couldn’t be more pleased with your service. What does that mean to you?

Everything. We understand that it’s not everyday that clients get a new kitchen counter

or replace their vanities. We ensure the client is listened to and guided through the decision making processes in the smoothest way possible. We take pride in delivering top quality customer service to match our elite craftmanship.

What does the future hold for Elite Granite?

We are always evolving and are currently transforming our showroom to provide clients with an even better experience. And of course we plan to continue growing our client base. ■

Sound of Music

FESTIVAL By Leslie Styles / Photography By Gareth Skipp

Burlington’s downtown and waterfront came alive with the 40th annual Sound of Music Festival that took place in June. Canada’s largest music festival included the Downtown Streetfest, Children’s Village, the Midway, Vendors, the Grande Festival Parade and the popular Club Series featuring 30 bands playing in bars across the city, proudly supporting emerging local artists. Brant Street restaurants did their part by constructing patio areas so patrons could dine and not miss any of the action. Music filled the air, artists painted, youngsters hoola hooped and car buffs enjoyed a collection of vintage rides. The Sound of Music Festival has come a long way since its modest beginnings in 1980, and it continues to grow year after year, creating lasting memories for the thousands who attend.

Aldershot BIA’s

MARKET By Leslie Styles

Aldershot BIA recently held their first pop up market of the summer in the former Home Hardware location. The sun was shining and the music was playing as local vendors gathered under tents in the sun-drenched parking lot, while shoppers browsed their products and learned about their services. Some of the vendors included Basketful Boutique, West Avenue Cider House, and StillWater Float Centre. If you missed out, check out the next markets coming on July 20th, August 24th and September 28th. Top: Tiffany of West Avenue Cider House talks with Lindsey. Party on

PLAINS By Leslie Styles

There was plenty of free family fun at the Party on Plains evening of June 27th. Visitors were treated to music, lawn games, magic tricks, fun-foam covered sidewalks and free mini sandwiches, courtesy of Mr. Sub. Daffy Dilly the Clown made balloon animals for the kiddies and Pluckers Wing & Crab Shack filled their patio offering some great summertime specials. The party was held across three plaza locations and included a vintage car show and live music.

Taking a stand for

WILDLIFE By Laura Eley / Photography by Katie Zajac of WWF-Canada

For the second year at Burlington’s Beachway Park, kids and their families hit the ground running in support of wildlife and nature as part of WWF-Canada’s Kids’ Run for Nature. The one, three and five-kilometre fun run and fundraiser encourages young people to get active in local green spaces. It was founded in 2015 by Jasmine de Pencier and Jett Jardeleza-Toole, then aged 10, who were determined to protect Canada’s nature and wildlife and has since grown to include 27 runs across Canada, including communities in Newfoundland and Labrador all the way to Vancouver Island. This year’s runs aim to raise nearly $100,000 for WWF-Canada’s conservation efforts. Learn more by visiting kidsrunfornature.ca.
