late inductee to the hybrid (gas/electric) club, BMW delivers its distinctive driver oriented magic and sporty road manners to a market sector that could do with more performance pizzazz. Yes, the new 530e is the most ecofriendly and the most fuel efficient 5 Series ever. Yet, I’m happy to report, it’s also an awesome, thrill to drive, sport sedan. My test car, the BMW 530e xDrive is priced on par with its gasonly counterpart the BMW 530i xDrive and it’s just as quick (0 to 100 km/hour in 6.1 seconds). The only drawback is a liveable loss of some trunk storage space. The xDrive designation signifies that it comes with all-wheel-drive, a standard feature in Canada. In addition to the 530i’s (2.0 litre) turbocharged gas engine,
the 530e is also powered by an (111 hp) electric motor, or a combination of both. It’s a seamless transition between these power modes. The electric motor is utilized to provide some extra torque punch (or eBoost) during hard acceleration, in addition to its primary eco-friendly duties. Top speed in pure electric mode is limited to 140 km/hour and the 530e has a combined top speed of 210 km/hour. Plug-in hybrids enjoy the perks associated with full-electric vehicles and, in fact, the 530e can drive about 50 km in its eDrive (pure electric) mode. That’s an ample daily-drive range for most urban commuters. The electric motor is positioned upstream from the 530e’s transmission, which allows the 8-speed unit to be used in pure-electric mode. It also eliminates the need for a torque converter and reduces weight.

The hybrid battery pack can take up to seven hours to charge from a residential 120-volt outlet. A level ll (240 volt) charge point will do it in less than 3 hours. My overall average fuel consumption was a miserly 6.7 L/100km and, no doubt, a lower figure would be attainable with more restrained (less fun) driving. A first glance, it’s easy to miss that a 530e is a plugin hybrid. A little door (for electric connection) on the left front fender and small eDrive logos on the rear roof pillars are the most obvious. Other indicators are subtle, so top marks if you twigged the blue tinting on the BMW badge, front grille, and wheel hub covers.
THE FUTURE IS HERE AUTONOMOUS PARKING! A tight or awkward parking stall … no problem. The unique key fob that comes with the Remote Parking option allows an owner to remotely control a 530e and autonomously drive it safely in, and out, of a confined parking location.

BREAKFAST HASH WITH EGGS AND MUSHROOMS
P
erfect for an everyday breakfast or weekend brunch, this recipe features portabella mushroom blending seamlessly with Italian sausage, while peppers add colour to the dish.
Ingredients 1 large fresh portabella mushroom 1 tbsp (15 mL) olive oil 3 mild Italian sausages, removed from casing and crumbled 1/2 small red onion, diced 1 clove garlic, minced 2 large russet potatoes, peeled, diced 1/4 green pepper, diced 1/4 red pepper, diced Salt and pepper 1/2 cup (125 mL) shredded cheddar cheese 4 large eggs Chopped parsley
METHOD Step One Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C. Place portabella mushroom in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse until finely chopped.
Step Two
In a large non-stick oven-safe skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped mushrooms, sausage, onion and garlic. Use spatula to break up sausage into tiny pieces. Once cooked, remove from pan and set aside. Leave any fat renderings in pan.
Step Three
Heat pan with sausage renderings over medium heat. Add diced potatoes. Allow to cook 10 to 15 minutes until softened. Add diced peppers and increase to medium-high heat; continue to cook until potatoes are crispy, about 10 minutes. Add sausage back to pan; cook another 2 to 3 minutes before stirring.

Sprinkle with cheese. Crack eggs in each quadrant of pan. Season with salt and pepper. Place skillet in oven and bake 20 minutes, until eggs are set.

Before putting your home on the market, consider these three tips to help make a bright first impression. Conduct a lighting audit Walk through your space room-by-room like a buyer would. Watch for dark areas and replace any burned-out bulbs. Poorly lit spaces can make a room feel uninviting, or even give the impression that you’re trying to hide flaws. The easiest and most cost effective way to brighten a space is by replacing existing light

fixtures with ones that have more wattage capacity to maximize brightness. Dimmer switches can also easily be added to adjust light levels for different times of day. Be strategic Kitchens are one of the most important selling features of a home. A good kitchen lighting plan mixes layers of ambient, task and accent lighting. Pot lights bring a large amount of general light and can be added just about anywhere with minimal damage to an existing space. Pendants over an island and low hanging fixtures in dining areas create ambiance and define the areas. Under cabinet lights brighten prep surfaces, while above cabinet lights can accent the height of a space. LED tape can also be installed to open shelving, inside display cabinets and to toe-kicks or under islands. ▷

THE NEW FACE OF FIXED INCOME
F
or the last 30 years bonds have helped boost portfolios. With fixed income prices now falling, it’s time rethink how these assets fit in a portfolio. Simply put, when interest-rates rise, bond prices fall. This is because investors won’t pay for a bond that has a lower interest-rate, which ultimately decreases the value of the bond. Beginning in the early 1980s, bond yields began to move lower as the threat of inflation subsided. This allowed investors to enjoy a combination of high current income and strong capital gains without much volatility – a trend that has been in place for several decades. But now, with bond yields rising, fixed income prices are falling. As a result, their purpose in your portfolio is changing. There’s always value in low correlation assets within a portfolio. The key is to combine assets to improve returns without increasing your risk. Since bonds and stocks tend to move in different directions, from a diversification standpoint, owning bonds in your portfolio can reduce its overall volatility. Bonds still provide a safe-haven. They preserve capital, provide diversification benefits and dampen down volatility in a portfolio. That’s a significantly different role than what they’ve played in the past.

Make a great first impression Lighting on the outside your home is just as important as the lighting inside your home. A well-lit exterior is welcoming and draws buyers in. Installing soffit pot lights or up-lights showcase your home’s architectural features and highlights landscaping. Exterior lighting is also critical for safety. Light up your front entry as well as walkways and steps. ■

here's nothing better than an ice cold Mojito. This drink is Cuba's most famous cocktail. For a delicious spin on the classic, try this version. Sweet, tart, and bursting with fruity flavor, blackberries are an outstanding addition. It is important that the blackberries and mint are gently muddled - never crushed - to release their flavors but not release harsh or bitter tannins into the beverage. A wooden spoon or firm silicone spatula can be used in place of a muddler.
Muddle blackberries, mint leaves, sugar, lemon juice and lime juice in a tall glass until berries are mostly crushed. Next, add seltzer, vodka, and ice. Stir well and serve.
