MCLAREN

SPEEDTAIL CARS.MCL AREN.COM

Building a successor to the McLaren F1 supercar, which broke the speed record and wowed with its central seat layout and gold-lined engine bay, was never going to be easy. But then the McLaren Speedtail, dubbed a “Hyper-GT” (grand tourer) by the British marque is a monster. With a pioneering 1050PS hybrid powertrain at its core, it brings together unprecedented levels of innovation and elegance to create a new benchmark in automotive design.

LUXURYLISTED.CA

McLaren’s design mantra, everything for a reason, holds true through every last detail of the Speedtail. The design is one of pure, streamlined elegance. Born out of the single-minded vision to create the most aerodynamically efficient car ever, there is an uninterrupted flow of air from nose to tail. The dramatically elongated tail is as distinct in the automotive world as the Speedtail’s incredible velocity. This is minimalist elegance at its apex. All honed around extraordinary, ground-breaking, performance.

ISSUE 01 2019

Perfect symmetry. Unprecedented space. Unparalleled digital craftsmanship. The cockpit of the Speedtail is an extraordinary place to be. Innovation touches every element.

INTERIOR

From the materials design, to the very layout of the interior environment. The heart of the Speedtail’s interior is the driving seat, quite literally. Its central position recalls their very first road car, the iconic McLaren F1. It offers an unparalleled view of the road and helps to create a unique sense of space and balance behind the wheel, a feeling that is amplified by a stunning

use of glass and the seamless, clean dashboard design. A modern driving experience, reimagined in a truly incredible way. Just 12.8 seconds. That’s all it takes for the Speedtail to reach 300km/h from a standing start. This is the fastest acceleration delivered by any McLaren to date. But the Speedtail is a car

LUXURYLISTED.CA

11

ISSUE 01 2019

that pushes ever further. Keep on accelerating, and the car will reach its staggering top speed of 403km/h (250mph) – higher than any car they’ve ever created. The problem is that just 106 are being built, mirroring the production run of the F1, and all have sold for $2.25 million (US). ■

CREATING A STYLISH OPEN CONCEPT REBECCAHAYDESIGNS.COM // PHOTOGR APHY: STEPHANI BUCHMAN

A retired couple headed to Florida for the winter and came home to a completely renovated and decorated new condo. After 40 years of living in their 150-year-old Toronto heritage home, these retired homeowners were ready to start their next chapter in a condo located down the road. Looking for a fresh perspective, they enlisted the help of Rebecca Hay of Rebecca Hay Designs, a Toronto based design firm, to re-imagine their newly purchased but dated condo and find a way to blend some of their own traditional furnishings with new ones, to create a warm and inviting entertaining space.

When asked how this project came together, Rebecca called it “a dream project.” They were able to choose the best heirloom items, while also mixing in modern fabrics and lighting to create a friendly and sophisticated home. The homeowners gave Rebecca and her team complete creative freedom and entrusted the full scale reno and décor project to her, all while they wintered down south. →

RE-THINK HOW YOU LIVE

The condo needed a complete redesign and overhaul. The clients brought the Rebecca Hay Design team on to rethink the layout and completely redesign the entire unit. They decided to take down walls and open the new kitchen up to a family den. Adding custom builtins allowed them to include his & her desks, as well as an entertainment unit. →

MIXING OLD & NEW

Purging 40 years’ worth of collectables and furnishings can be a daunting task, one that Rebecca and her team relish. Keeping some old heirloom pieces and complementing these with some modern elements makes the design inviting and classic. The homeowners silver platters and bowls now display beautifully with old leather books and modern trinkets. The kitchen island chairs were refurbished with white paint and a modern patterned fabric. When an item has great design lines and is solidly built, it’s easy to repurpose and give it new life. The chairs were a symbol of the condo itself, what’s old becomes new again. Rebecca and her team encouraged her clients to repurpose old finds where suitable and focus on new upholstered furnishings wherever possible. The sofa was a custom-built pull-out sofa bed, for extra guests and for TV watching. Using custom built Canadian made furnishings wherever possible is always a designer’s goal.

Custom kitchen cabinets in rich navy and warm whites with sparkling brass hardware, added for a sophisticated feel while keeping this bright airy space fresh and inviting. Large islands are great places for food prep and layout appetizers. The bar was an extremely important element to have within the overall space for this couple, so Rebecca incorporated the bar into the kitchen area to allow for additional liquor storage and wine glasses. It was the perfect little perch for pouring bubbly to celebrate their new home. â–

BIOGRAPHY OF

ARTHUR ERICKSON In 1963, Erickson reached a landmark moment in his career when he won a competition to design Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. Upon the University’s completion, Erickson’s integrative design gained international acclaim, opening the gateway to a long and distinguished career.

Global architect, Arthur Charles Erickson was a passionate advocate of cultural awareness, and a fervent explorer of human and natural environments. His buildings, though remarkably diverse, share deep respect for the context, incomparable freshness and grace, and the dramatic use of space and light. He has brought to his work an understanding of the community of man that, when filtered through his insightful mind and fertile imagination, gives birth to a singular architecture that is in dialogue with the world. A Vancouver, B.C. native, Erickson studied at the University of British Columbia and later at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Advanced studies brought Erickson to Greece, Italy, the Middle East and Japan, where he discovered the nuances of architectural style in climate and terrain.

As both architect and professor, Erickson has contributed much to the architectural community. His works include The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Provincial Law Courts in Vancouver, the San Diego Convention Center, Napp Laboratories in Cambridge, England, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., California Plaza in Los Angeles, and most recently the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington. Erickson’s noteworthy contributions and innovative design work earned him the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 1986. The highest honor bestowed by the AIA, Erickson was the first Canadian to receive the reward. Prefacing this honor, Erickson received numerous awards and degrees, including gold medals from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1984 and the French AcadEmie d’Architecture in 1986. 1. Adapted from Arthur Erickson’s 1986 AIA Gold Medal Citation. ARTHURERICKSON.COM

What gives this home so much personality is the interior and all the furnishings, all designed by Erickson. They are an incredible complement to the home itself as it creates a beautiful harmony and balance, which makes it such a colourful yet comfortable space, says Eric Latta, Real Estate Agent. →

The Spring Summer 2019 collection, entitled Foyer de la Vice, is visually inspired by the work of Edgar Degas and the ballet, and is conceptually inspired by notions around perfectionism and what is deemed as perfect. The garments’ compositions embody the essence of a negligee and stagewear unified to convey the ballerina’s conflict between her internal self and external pressures. The relentless pursuit of perfectionism often precedes vices, to achieve perfection or to deal with the pressures of the unobtainable. Edgar Degas’ sculpture “La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans” presents the story of a young girl whose striving for perfection leads to her demise; a beautiful possibility whose inner conflict between societal pressures leaves her lost in her own private thoughts. →

Monochromatic materials of sultry draped onyx merging with the classic purity of blush rosé describe the juxtaposition between the innocence and beauty of the Paris opera high life and the flirtatious and vicious activities of young ballerinas and “gentlemen” of the bourgeoisie which occurred in the fourier de la danse at the Paris Opera House. The collection title, Foyer de la Vice, is a play on words on the foyer de la danse, the location older men and young ballerinas of the 1800’s Paris Opera House would meet and a place wives and children were not allowed to enter. Foyer de la Vice is the place you go, physically or mentally, that may lead you to your vices.

We put what is good about us into our appearance, to represent our best selves. But what if we presented our whole selves? Are your vices defined by you or applied to you by society? What do you wear to go to the Foyer de la Vice? ■

FINANCE

DISABILITY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FROM A NUMBER OF FEDERAL/PROVINCIAL/ TERRITORIAL SOURCES. HERE ARE SOME:

SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH

SPECIAL NEEDS TODAY & TOMORROW

Children with special needs are those with physical disabilities, chronic conditions, intellectual disabilities, emotional problems, activity limitations or learning disabilities.

• Medical Expense Credit can provide some tax relief for parents of disabled children. • Provincial Assistive Devices Programs provide assistance for both basic and personalized assistive devices. • Provincial Home and Vehicle Modification Programs provide basic home/vehicle modifications for disabled children and adults.

BY JEFF FINCH, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER // 416 695 8600

Parents start with the expectation that their children will grow and thrive and one day leave the nest – but for some parents, that day will never come. They are the parents of children with special needs who will always be dependent to some extent.

• Disability Tax Credit can be transferred to a parent when their child has severe and prolonged mental or physical impairments and the child cannot utilize the full amount of the credit.

Your child’s needs are constant and very expensive – for everything from medications, mobility aids and assistive devices, to 24/7 hands-on care. Your child may never be able to earn an income so can’t help out financially. You love your children and would do anything for them – but how can you cope with all the financial and emotional stresses now and in a future when you may not be around? Here is some information that can help.

• GST exemptions or rebates are available for some products and services used by persons with disabilities. • Provincial social assistance programs with an income support component, such as the Ontario Disability Support Program, may be available to your child. PLAN FOR THE FUTURE WHEN YOUR DISABLED CHILD IS PAST RETIREMENT AGE OR WHEN YOU MAY NO LONGER BE THERE TO HELP:

• A Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is similar to an RRSP in that it is intended to help save for long-term financial security, though specifically for beneficiaries who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. Unlike contributions to an RRSP, RDSP contributions are not tax deductible. However, income earned in an RDSP is similarly tax-deferred until paid out to the beneficiary, and government grants and bonds are available to supplement savings. RDSP contributions can be made until the end of the year in which the beneficiary turns 59, with an overall lifetime contribution limit of $200,000 per beneficiary. • Set up a trust either during your lifetime or through your will, or purchase an insurance policy – but be sure the trust or policy is structured correctly so that it does not disqualify your disabled child from income or asset tested benefits. • Have a valid will that names your child as a beneficiary, but subject to the appropriate trust conditions. This is especially important in instances of divorce and/or blended families. • Life insurance can provide for your child (as the named beneficiary or the beneficiary of an insurance trust) no matter when you pass away. Protect and support your special needs child today and tomorrow, as well as your overall financial life, by consulting with your professional advisor now. ■

HOME DÉCOR

THE LAKE HOUSE SAR ABEDERMAN.COM // PHOTOGR APHY: STEPHANI BUCHMAN

Who says you have to do country style when designing in the country? When Sara Bederman Design was brought in to design the interior of a country home on an ultra-modern family cottage compound in the Kawartha Lakes region, the team was eager to define the direction of the interior. Would it be country rustic set

in the modern architecture of the home or did the client wish to continue the ultra-modern aesthetic throughout the interior design as well? True to the values of her design studio, Sara Bederman knew that the first thing to do was to consider the impact that the outside surroundings had from inside the home. →

HOME DÉCOR

The huge glass windows that looked onto the lake established an immediate connection to the natural setting of the home. What happened inside had to enhance the beauty filtering in from the outside. In addition, as 1 of 3 new cottages built on the property,

Sara wanted to make sure this home was a true reflection of the homeowners, a place that told their story and reflected their desired aesthetic.

With 3 young children, this cottage had to be ready to take on a lot of playing, entertaining and nesting. Sensible finishes were essential, but beauty was not to be compromised. The kitchen, set as open concept to the adjacent great room, was efficiently laid out to maximize ease of use. Fast paced food preparation was definitely the future for this kitchen so storage and organization solutions in the cabinet interiors

were provided. Appliances were planned in an efficient triangle with a wide isle through the middle of the working counter and oversized island. Clean, contemporary white cabinets were topped with a hardworking white quartz countertop. This combination was sure to offer freedom of use and easy maintenance. Hardwood style vinyl flooring was specified to add a warm, no nonsense floor cover that could

withstand wet swim towels, sandy feet and even snowy boots. The goal for this kitchen design was to provide an overall timeless style while serving all the diverse and demanding needs required by this family. Sara and her team made sure that each of their client’s goals were not just achieved, but surpassed. →

Stainless steel appliances added an industrial element to the space and gave the kitchen an urban edge. The highlight of this family-friendly kitchen was definitely the gorgeous reclaimed barn board wall cover. This finish added warmth and texture to the otherwise sensibly finished kitchen. The barn board feature was a nod to the beautiful, tree filled landscape filtering through the spectacular large windows found all around the home and an unexpected finish in the ultra-modern architecture of the home.

LINCOLN NAUTILUS T R I P T O TO F I N O BY BOB M c HUGH // LINCOLNCANADA.COM

LUXURYLISTED.CA

66

ISSUE 01 2019

AU TOMOT I V E

Nautilus is a new, made in Canada, mid-sized luxury utility vehicle that fits perfectly into an impressively updated new Lincoln product line. Hey, just having a name, instead of a jumble of letters and/or numbers, is a plus in my book. Nautilus is also a moniker that flows smoothly with established Lincoln product names, like Navigator and Continental.

As the small twin-engine plane touched down in Nanaimo, BC, we could see a line of Lincoln vehicles waiting by a hanger, and we taxied right up to them. My assigned Nautilus was waiting, literally steps away, at the foot of the plane’s drop-down staircase. Certainly beats the usual rush into an airport terminal, only to anxiously stand and stare at an empty luggage carousel.

Our trip to the picturesque little harbour town of Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, was already programmed into the Nautilus navigation system. But first, some lunch (of course) at a local restaurant and a short presentation from Jim Rideout, Marketing Manager at Lincoln Canada. He described Nautilus as “the next step in the evolution of Lincoln” and went on to highlight its new technology, comfort and safety features.” →

The “Signature Lincoln” lighting system is a personal favourite. Sensing your approach, it welcomes you with surround lighting, lighted door handles and a large Lincoln logo is projected on the ground by the door. Sequential mood lighting and a dash display then greets you when you step inside. Love this added touch of sophistication and convenience, plus it provides added safety in dark parking areas. The value of Lincoln’s Co-Pilot360 system was immediately apparent in the parking lot, after lunch. Having surround-view cameras, warning sensors and radar, which alerts of approaching vehicles, certainly made our escape from the busy parking area much easier. On the highway, this bundle of driver assist technologies continued to impress. As it also

LUXURYLISTED.CA

includes Blind Spot, pre-collision assist (with automatic emergency braking), auto high beams and a smart lane-keeping system that positions Nautilus in the centre of a traffic lane. Leaving Naniamo we headed north and then west towards Port Alberni. Ah yes, time to check out the three different driving modes and play with those paddle shifters on the Nautilus’s steering wheel. The busy two-lane highway, mainly through the famous heavily wooded park known as Cathedral Grove, had limited passing opportunities. Eventually we became a long convoy of vehicles.

ISSUE 01 2019

AU TOMOT I V E

Hang-on, we’ve got adaptive cruise control (i.e. semi-autonomous driving), a killer 19-speaker Revel audio system and a superbly comfortable driver’s seat with a “deeply” relaxing massage feature... we’re mellow again.

My Nautilus was powered by the new (optional) 2.7 litre turbocharged engine, which can deliver an impressive 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. Unlike turbos of yore, this new-breed quiet turbo engine delivers smooth, progressive power and good fuel economy. An eight-speed automatic transmission also helps with fuel conservation and this engine also comes with a fuel saving Auto Stop-Start system. The centre console is an uncluttered design that smoothly integrates the Lincoln push-button gear shift layout. Two built-in storage areas under the console are handy additions to the covered bins up top. A hand-stitched leather steering wheel also sits ahead of a customizable digital instrument cluster. Following a quick pit-stop in Port Alberni, we continued on scenic Highway 4 to Tofino. It becomes a trickier, twisty highway with lots of changes in elevation and is quite narrow in some sections, with steep drop-offs. Nautilus provided sure-footed confidence and was a pleasure to drive, yet it was still good to arrive at the Wickaninnish Inn before dark.

BIG WATER

No landmass exits between here and Japan, so when winds build up over the Pacific Ocean they can cause waves over 6 metres high to thunder in. The McDiarmid family enjoy storm watching on Chesterman Beach (it’s 2.5km long) so much, they built the Wickaninnish Inn in 1996. BIG TREES

It’s home to some of Canada’s oldest (over 1,000 years) and biggest (over 18 metres in circumference) trees. Dubbed “War in the Woods” a series of protests against logging in Clayoquot Sound, a temperate old-growth rainforest, was the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history. ■ FUEL ECONOMY: 2.7L twin-turbo V6

ISSUE 012018 2019 SPRING

A RT S & E T N E RTA I N M E N T

For over two decades, William Fisk has created meticulously rendered oil on canvas paintings of carefully curated objects with breathtaking results and the art world has taken notice. “The conceptual motivation for the production of this series of paintings has been to try to reach the fullness of an idea that offers viewers the means to access the contents of their imagination and its significance,” remarks William about his Portrait Series. “In creating a series of paintings that addresses and reviews a perspective revolving around a single concept, my intention is to establish the foundation upon which viewers are invited to interpret the work as a whole. As a consequence, viewers are invited to examine the formal considerations of the work in relation to the emblematic significance of its content.”

LUXURYLISTED.CA

71

ISSUE 01 2019

The objects depicted in his Portrait Series were purchased second hand, without any tangible reference to the previous owner. They are specific utilitarian objects - 35mm cameras, light bulbs, shoes, pay phones, trophies, furniture and clothing - that have experienced undeterminable yet indisputable human contact. →

His process involves multiple layers of oil paint applied on canvas and is lengthy, taking anywhere between three months to a year to complete a single work. The scale of each painting is determined by the complexity of the subject - the more detailed the object, the larger the canvas. Fisk also employs a minimal yet nuanced colour palate consisting of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and titanium white to convey the warmth of leather and plastic or the chill of steel and glass.

As many artists know, success doesn’t come automatically. It’s usually the product of years of struggle and risk, something William knows very well. In the short CBC documentary Fisk: Untitled Portrait, which was then followed by a second doc entitled Fisk: The New York Opening, we see the moment when Fisk receives a short email from his Toronto dealer, terminating his representation. Without notice, Fisk lost his source of income and his only means of selling work. The Toronto native was left without many options. In order to continue pursuing his dream, William had to bet on himself and risk financial and artistic oblivion. →

“As a filmmaker, I wanted to capture the passion and near obsession that Fisk displays as he works, but also to convey a sense of what he is like as a person,” says Director Alejandro Alvarez Cadilla. William’s works have been shown at Forum Gallery in New York and Los Angeles, Nicolas Metivier Gallery and Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto and is now exhibited at the Burnarducci Gallery in New York. ■

“What I find most fascinating about him is that he is the quintessential painter: a single-minded workaholic. But he is also a devoted father and husband. If he’s not painting, he is like any other regular Joe, and it’s this contrast that made him such an interesting subject for me as a filmmaker.” SAYS DIRECTOR ALEJANDRO ALVAREZ CADILL A.
