CANADIANS HAVE SPOKEN: INSURANCE IS IMPORTANT, BUT ARE THEY INFORMED? The majority of us seem to agree that not only is insurance important, but so is seeking professional advice about our insurance needs. The problem is, relatively few Canadians actually have a relationship with an insurance professional who might give them that all-important counsel. In a recent Leger national public opinion survey, 84 per cent of respondents believe

it's important or very important to secure professional advice about insurance for their home, car or business. Interestingly, women are significantly more likely than men to believe this. We consider receiving professional advice is more important about insurance than it is about banking, loans, mortgages and tax preparation. The survey also revealed that the vast majority of Canadians would have more confidence in advice from an educated insurance advisor. A Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), has earned the benchmark of professional insurance designations. The research also showed a gap between how important Cana-

dians consider car, home and business insurance to be, and respondents' respective levels of knowledge about each. For instance, while 96 per cent of respondents consider home insurance to be important, only 70 per cent consider themselves knowledgeable about it. Finally, despite Canadians' strong belief in the importance of insurance and the need for professional advice on insurance, and high confidence in insurance professionals with the CIP designation, still nearly three quarters of respondents have no professional insurance advisor. These survey results reveal a gap that needs to be bridged. In particular, they suggest that we need to seek out experienced insurance professionals for advice on car, home and business insurance. Learn more about the survey results and the CIP designation at beassured.ca. www.newscanada.ca

Wishing you a very Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING BY HELPING A CHARITY There are more ways to enjoy Thanksgiving than eating lots of turkey, pumpkin and mashed potatoes. The fall holiday marks out a time to remember what we are grateful for in our lives. If you want to do more this year to show how you are thankful, consider helping a charitable cause. Lots of charities have established volunteer programs that you can join. There are also creative options, such has hosting your own event for an organization like Beautiful World Canada. 5 bad habits and the best ways to quit them

Fall is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and finally ditch that bad habit for good. Here are some helpful tips to help make eliminating your vice that much easier.

DID YOU KNOW: Sitting is wrecking your body. With the advent of TV, computers, and the desk job, we’re sitting down more than ever before: 9.3 hours a day. As soon as you sit: • Electrical activity in the leg muscles shuts off • Calorie burning drops to 1 per minute • Enzymes that help break down fat drop 90% • After 2 hours: Good cholesterol drops 20% • After 24 hours: Insulin effectiveness drops 24% and risk of diabetes rises

10

KING LIVING

A sedentary lifestyle Some experts call sitting the new smoking, and it's not hard to see why. Spending most of your time at a desk or on a couch can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity, a higher risk of cancer and back pain. Your mood can take a nosedive and you may even experience trouble falling or staying asleep. Some simple changes can get you moving again — try going for a walk on your lunch break, doing some stretches at your desk, or joining a class with a friend to keep you committed. Smoking Most Canadian smokers want to quit, but a smoker's daily life is often filled with emotional and work-related triggers. “It is challenging to quit smoking and many people may take several attempts to quit for good,” explains Dr. Richard Tytus, a family physician in Ontario. “While using a single product works for many, Combination Therapy is about 30 per cent more effective. Try combining the Nicoderm patch for ongoing withdrawal with Nicorette Quick-

Mist to control cravings. These products are authorized by Health Canada to be used as a combined solution.” Too much screen time Most experts agree that browsing the web before bedtime hurts your sleep quality. Proper sleep is essential for good health, so power down all your devices an hour before bed. You can also download an app that mimics natural light, switching your screen's hues to a yellow tone, dimming down as the day goes on. Overspending Spending money unnecessarily to the point where it becomes stressful can be bad for your health, contributing to insomnia, high blood pressure and digestive issues. You can get your finances under control by making and sticking to a budget, finding a new form of entertainment if shopping is your hobby and setting up automatic contributions so a portion of your paycheque goes directly into your savings account. Eating junk food Indulging in junk food is fine occasionally, but do it too frequently and you're putting yourself at risk of health problems like diabetes. To cut back, stock up on healthy grab-n-go snacks, turn leftovers into work lunches and make smart substitutions like swapping a bottle of water for the pop in your combo. www.newscanada.ca

VOLUNTEERING OFFERS MANY BENEFITS Now that the children are heading back to school, it's time to start thinking of something you can do with that spare time. It might surprise you to discover volunteering is actually good for both your mental and physical health. When you volunteer your time, you meet and talk with others, fighting against isolation that can often lead to depression. It truly does make you feel worthwhile when you lend a hand to others. There can also be benefits to your physical health as well. One U.S. study found that people over 50 who volunteer have lower blood pressure than those who don't. Of course, the places you can lend your time are numerous. But Amnesty International works tirelessly to support human rights defenders around the world, with no government funding. Their efforts depend

BREAKING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN YOUTH Young people today face enormous pressure to excel at school and secure a wellpaying job. With our skyrocketing rental and housing prices, precarious employment and intense competition, the challenges to succeed are daunting. Not to mention the added stress caused by the fear of poverty, homelessness and addiction issues. Research shows that young Canadians are feeling the pressure and it's affecting their mental health. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 10 to 20 per cent of youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder. A staggering 3.2 million 12 to 19-year-olds are at risk for developing depression. Besides depression,

mental illness can show itself as anxiety, stress, excessive worrying, panic attacks and eating or sleeping disorders. Over the past several years, public awareness and discussion about mental management, day programming, housing, health issues have increased significantly. and community support services. rail mix is a year-round favourite that can be a great source of protein and heart-healthy fats. “Whip up a batch of these bite-size fruit and nut treats to keep in your fridge for a quick and satisfying car snack before the kids' soccer game,” says Samara Foisy, registered dietitian for President's Choice. “It's easy to go over our recommended daily value of sodium, so I've chosen a trail mix with no salt added.” Soft dates work best in this recipe, but don't worry if your dates are on the firmer side — simply soak in a bowl of hot water for about 30 minutes to soften before using.

Toasted Coconut Trail Mix Bites

Prep time: 20 minutes Chill time: 15 minutes Makes: 20 pieces

Ingredients • 1/2 cup Medjool dates, pitted • 2 tbsp almond butter • 1 tbsp maple syrup • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 cup President's Choice Blue Menu trail mix • 2 tbsp ancient grains and super seeds blend • 1/2 cup crispy rice cereal • 1/4 cup dried apricots, roughly chopped • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips • 2 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut, toasted Directions 1. Pulse dates, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla and salt in food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape down bowl if necessary. 2. Add trail mix and seeds blend; pulse until coarsely chopped. Add cereal, apricots and chocolate chips; pulse until combined. 3. Transfer to large bowl; mix with moistened hands if necessary to combine. Roll by heaping one tablespoon into balls, then roll in coconut to coat. Arrange in single layer on large plate or baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. Chef's Tip: Toast coconut in a dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring often until golden; about, 5 to 7 minutes. Find more recipes online at ontariobeans.on.ca www.newscanada.ca

THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE PAYING A CONTRACTOR UP FRONT You've decided to get going on your dream renovation and worked out the details with a contractor. Now you're anxious to get the work started. But the contractor wants half the money up front. What should you do? Think very carefully before paying. Then think about finding a different contractor. Outside of specific circumstances — such as pre-ordering high-value custom products that cannot be returned, paying for permit fees, road cuts, tree removal, building demolition, or moving hydro wires — down payments for work not yet completed should never amount to much more than 10 per cent of the total cost. If your contractor is providing design services separately from renovation services, these may also need to be paid for prior to the construction work starting. Reputable reno professionals shouldn't need your money to finance their business and should bill you in proportion to what has been completed. A deposit

14

KING LIVING

serves mainly to confirm your good faith commitment to the project, as set out in your contract. If a contractor wants most or all the money up front (and often in cash), they may be running an under-the-table operation, cheating on their taxes, skipping building permits and proper business insurance — all of which put you at risk These are situations where fly-by-night

contractors may not do the work promised and the homeowners may never see their money again. And without a written contract, there will be almost nothing they can do about it. Most renovation contracts, particularly for larger projects, have a clear payment schedule laid out that ties payments to progress milestones, so you pay an amount proportionate to the percentage of work completed. That's fair to both you and the contractor. Small jobs may only require a small deposit and full payment upon completion. In no case should you have to pay a large percentage or all of the costs before the work is done. For consumers, the key to renovating the smart and safe way lies in being informed about how the renovation business works. You can find a wealth of practical information from the Canadian Home Builders' Association at www.getitinwriting.ca. www.newscanada.ca
